The Simon Silver Mine is located near Mina, Nevada, approximately 50 miles northwest of Tonopah and 40 miles east of Hawthorne. It is an old property which was last worked in 1932 and closed operations due to problems arising from low metal prices. Federal Resources Corp. acquired the property in 1963 and undertook a completely new development program since the old surface plant and underground workings were beyond feasible repair. The deposit of silver, lead, zinc and copper is predominantly replacement of limestone. In the summer of 1964, a new surface plant was constructed and on December 2, 1964, sinking of a three compartment vertical shaft started and was completed to a depth of 1088 feet in April of 1965. Following the sinking program an 850 foot crosscut was driven to intersect the mineral zone on the 1000 level after which drifting, crosscutting and raising totaling some additional 4280 feet has been completed along with considerable diamond drilling and long holing into the walls. To date, two ore bodies have been encountered and test stoping operations are underway together with development of the 800 level for servicing, ventilation and access. The present development of ore is directed towards substantiating sufficient reserves to warrant the construction of a flotation mill.

Cemented backfilling has enabled underground hard rock mines to extract orebodies more safely with improved ore recovery. It is important to estimate the minimum required strength parameters for a backfill mix by optimizing the binder percentage to enable cost-effective and safe stoping operations. We conducted three-dimensional numerical modelling to study the effect of various stoping parameters on the stability of a free-standing backfill wall. A Mohr-Coulomb material model was used for the backfill material and the rock-fill interface. A strength reduction technique, excluding friction angle, was employed to arrive at a minimum stable strength value for the backfill. For a given combination of strength values, the stability state of the backfill wall could be demarcated using a displacement and yield zone tracking method. The numerical modelling results are compared to some earlier theoretical models. From the simulations, a predictive equation is developed to predict the required strength parameters for a backfill mix to ensure a stable free-standing wall. Examples are given of the successful use of the predictive equation at some underground hard rock mine sites in India.

An accurate knowledge of Interactions among mineral particles and between such particles and dissolved and precipitated species Is Important in developing efficient separation processes. In this investigation interactions in Florida phosphatic clay waste, that are relevant to dispersion and selective reagent adsorption, the two main prerequisites for selective flocculation, were studied. Initial studies with artificial slimes, consisting of pure clay and phosphate minerals, showed dispersion of artificial slimes to be relatively easy. The problems that were encountered during selective flocculation of the artificial slime were due to unselective polyacryllc acid adsorption on clay, which was caused by the presence of multivalent calcium ions on the exchangeable cation positions on the clay surfaces. This problem could be solved by exchanging calcium for sodium, which reduces the interaction between the polymer and the clay surface. This procedure, however, was not successful for mineral mixtures. Natural slimes were found to be much more difficult to disperse. This was attributed to the presence of cementing materials such as humic substances and Ai and Fe (hydr)oxide precipitates. Selective removal of these cementing materials resulted in good dispersion and partial separation. Further increase in separation of natural slime is likely determined by the presence of calcium on the clay surfaces, as was found for the artificial mixtures.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems at two different mineral processing operations. Both systems have proven very effective at reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mill in a cost-effective manner. A 25,500-cfm system installed at a clay processing mill provided approximately 10 air changes per hour. This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by approximately 40 pct throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 50,000 and 100,000 cfm of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 air changes per hour. Average mill-wide respirable dust reductions were 36 and 64 pct, respectively. Not only did these systems reduce respirable dust concentrations and increase visibility throughout the mills, they were also easy to install and required minimal maintenance. A total mill ventilation system provides a general purging of the mill air; the system should be viewed as a supplemental technique to assist other dust control systems in operation.

Underground fractured aquifers in the Ernest Henry deposit are to a large extent controlled by deposit scale brittle structures. The underground mine has been subdivided into nine water zones based on hydrogeological characteristics, including conductivity and connectivity, within the mining areas bound by these structures. The nine water zones and the hydrological characteristics of the associated structures are utilised for risk assessing mine development and for targeting diamond drilling dewatering activities. Wireline and conventional underground diamond drilling techniques have been used throughout the network of underground aquifers with the aim of dewatering areas within the mining footprint. These dewatering drilling campaigns have historically been highly successful at lowering aquifer water levels throughout the underground workings. As part of recent mine expansion activities, diamond drilling has intersected high pressure (>507 psi), high temperature (>50°C) and high flow water (>3 L/sec) in as yet unconstrained underground aquifers. Groundwater is typically conducted through rubble and clay rich faults, further hampering progression of drilling. Drilling through fractured aquifers at depth presents both mine planning as well as safety challenges. Recent drill holes have been delayed or abandoned when aquifers hosting this high pressure, high flow water have been intersected, risking mine planning deadlines. Recent technological innovation developed to control groundwater outflows from the diamond drill hole whilst drilling has been trialled at the Ernest Henry Mine. This case study focuses on the utilisation of alternative drill methodologies to allow the current drilling campaign to continue without delay, whilst also improving safety conditions encountered on the drill site.

There is an indication that high-pressure roller milling promotes selective liberation due to preferential breakage along the mineral boundaries. A study was undertaken to compare the degree of liberation obtained by high-pressure roller milling with that of conventional ball milling. Coals with different HGI's were ground in a high-pressure roller mill and a ball mill to produce products with similar size distributions. The products were then subjected to float-sink separations to determine the degree of liberation. Also, the relative cleanabilities were compared by separating the ground products by froth flotation. The results from this study are presented in the paper.

ABSTRACT Leadership is a critical component to an organization’s safety culture and influences the ways that health and safety is enacted on site. Therefore, it is not surprising that improving leadership will also improve safety. Worker perceptions of management practices are shaped through unique leader-employee interactions over time. However, few details are known about the communicative support (i.e., emotional, informational, and tangible) offered by supervisors and its impact on miners’ perceptions and performance. Using pre and post-interview data with 20 supervisors and 48 workers during six-week interventions, researchers identified positive and negative instances of supervisor support and its implications on worker performance. This paper highlights the common support tactics offered by supervisors and desired by workers to help practitioners identify ways to improve their safety culture and subsequently, the proactivity and compliance of their workforce. INTRODUCTION Supervisory leadership is a critical component to the effective implementation of an organization’s health and safety management system (HSMS). Specifically, supervisors serve as representatives of an organization and their actions are indicative of the organization’s safety culture (Eisenberger et al. 1986). Senior management has been shown to serve as a frame of reference for guiding safe behaviors in the workplace (Mearns et al. 1998) and, more recently, research has related supervisory enforcement to workers’ safety compliance (Petitta et al., 2017). Therefore, it is not surprising that by improving leadership, perceptions of management and subsequent safety outcomes are likely to improve as well (Zohar, 2002). Perceptions of management are shaped through unique leader-employee interactions over a period of time (Hofmann and Morgeson, 2004, 1999). How these unique interactions impact worker performance, however, remains unexamined. As a result, understanding how supervisor-employee relationships operate in high-risk environments is unclear (Mirza and Isha, 2017; Denis et al., 2010). A starting point to better recognize the idiosyncrasies of these relationships is by way of examining the communicative support offered by front-line management and received by industry workers. To this end, this paper uses pre- and post-interview data to study the communicative aspects of supervisor-employee interactions at mine sites. The analysis uses a social support framework to identify positive and negative instances of supportive communication. From interview data with 20 managers and 48 mineworkers, data emerged that shows how supervisors’ unique types of support contribute to workers’ perceptions, motivation, and follow-through of safe work behavior.

"During the mid to late 1960’s, the underground potash industry in Saskatchewan was born. For the next four decades the industry operated at a steady pace supporting a large part of the world demand; until 2008 when the potash market heightened. Operators were motivated to capitalize on this increased demand, new mines were proposed while existing mines were planning upgrades. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) was one of the major producers planning upgrades to their production facilities quickly, including modifying the existing headframe and shaft at the PCS Cory Site to accommodate a new 1500 tonne per hour hoisting plant. Upon completion of the project, the innovative operations group continuously reviewed methods to increase production and reduce operating costs, allowing PCS to continue being competitive on the world market. This paper will describe the design challenges encountered during the development of the infrastructure around an operating facility whilst minimizing down time, schedule, capital and construction costs. This paper will also explore the strategy to increase capacity of the newly commissioned hoisting plant. BACKGROUND Potash production is a major Saskatchewan industry, and has played a significant role in the economy for over 40 years. Production commenced in 1962 when water problems were overcome at the International Minerals and Chemical (IMC) mine near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. A surge of development by other companies resulted in twelve companies opening ten mines by 1970. In 1975 Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan was created by the government of Saskatchewan and shortly thereafter purchased several mines in Saskatchewan, including the Cory Mine (Cory), near Saskatoon. Cory has been in operation since 1968 and is located 12 km (7.5 mi) west of Saskatoon in central Saskatchewan. The mine is located in the center of the world’s largest potash deposit, 1,000 m (3300 feet) below surface. PCS has embarked on sizable capital expansions of more than CDN $7 billion. The Cory CDN $1.6 billion expansion was expected to raise operational capability of the site to 2.7 million tonnes per year, an increase of 1.9 million tonnes per year (MTPY). To achieve 2.7 MTPY of finished product and considering the 22.6% average production recovery1, 12 MTPY of ore must be hoisted to surface for processing. To deliver this rate required upgrading of the hoisting plant to 1500 tonne per hour (TPH). To accomplish this ambitious challenge, creative thinking, careful planning and a cohesive team was needed to work together to ensure the schedule, budget and most importantly the work was completed safely"

The use of inert gas systems to extinguish mine fires has been the subject of research for some time in the United States. In some European countries, it is an established practice. Tests were conducted with the CMI Inert Gas System (CMI), which is being used by the Polish mining industry. This system utilizes a modified jet aircraft engine and afterburner as a compact source of combustion products with a very low (less than one percent) oxygen content. Water injected into the combustion products stream provides evaporative cooling and forms a mist with a high cooling capacity. The CMI system was used under controlled conditions to extinguish coal pile fires at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Experimental Mine in Bruceton, Pennsylvania. The test results show that the CMI system can be used conveniently to extinguish fires quickly and to maintain an inert atmosphere in the fire zone to prevent re-ignition.

Determining mineralogical characteristics of samples throughout the iron ore concentration process – from drill core samples up to the concentrate – is critical to process improvement and remediation. However, assessment of mineral proportions, liberation, and texture, although essential, can be time-consuming and costly. Thus, a mineralogical study is often not performed or only restricted to a limited number of samples. New iron ore deposits or new ore zones in active mines will bring new challenges as they are known to be problematic due to their lower grades, complex textures and presence of mineral impurities. In those cases, applied process mineralogy will be necessary to understand and to diagnose potential processing issues. To take full advantage of mineralogical information along the iron ore concentration process, new tools are being developed to provide mineralogical data based on texture, composition and liberation. In an early stage at the mine, the automated identification of drill core textures could provide essential information for the prediction of ore concentrability and grindability. In a later stage, the automated modal tool, combining the knowledge of the iron ore mineralogy of a specific deposit and the results of chemical analyses, can quantify the mineral proportions of the ore; results show good agreement between mineral estimation via chemical analysis and modal analysis using a Mineral Liberation Analyser. A bulk mineralogical analyser allowing semi-quantitative evaluation of the liberation of iron oxides is being validated. The results from the bulk mineralogical analyser will eventually be linked with the mineral proportions issued by the automated modal tool to provide complete mineralogical characteristics of iron ore samples. Ultimately, these mineralogical tools could provide valuable and timely insight for predicting concentrators’ performances or troubleshooting gravity separation processes.

One of the key operations in any milling circuit is grinding. Over the last two decades, large diameter Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills have become the preferred primary grinding mills. The drive systems became more complex as the size of the mills became larger, during which time operating and design experience for SAG mill accumulated. Considerable reliance is now placed in power electronics to provide flexibility in SAG mill operation to meet the demands of lower operating costs. Whereas earlier most SAG mills were designed to operate at fixed speeds, present day SAG mills can operate at a fixed speed or variable speed through the use of an AC synchronous motor or DC motor. However, this flexibility comes with an increase in capital and operating costs. Since the capital and operating costs of a project directly affect the project's rate of return, the selection of a SAG mill and its drive system should depend, in part, on the impact that the extra cost makes on the project. This impact can be measured by performing an economic analysis based on Net Present Cost (NPC) calculations. Although the NPC calculation is an important factor in the grinding mill selection, other factors such as reliability of mill drives and power source are important elements in the decision making process. This paper examines how the NPC calculation, plus reliability and power source, influence SAG mill selection.

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. Electrically Switched Ion Exchange (ESIX) is an approach for ion separation that combines Ion exchange (IX) and electrochemistry by utilizing electro active IX films to provide a selective, reversible, and economical separation method that greatly reduces secondary waste generation compared with conventional ion exchange. Studies on the development of films with improved stability and capacity and their use in continuous flow systems for ion separations will be. reported. Both technical and economic evaluations demonstrate ,the viability of once-through or batch recycle waste processing with ESIX.

The Bureau of Nines has received many inquiries on the subject of assaying oil-shales, both from individuals who desire to wake their own assay while in the field, and also from Commercial assayers and investigators. The present paper describes the assay retort used by the Bureau of Mines. in the research work on oil-shales now in progress at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau at Salt Lake City, Utah, and at the Colorado cooperative oil-shale laboratory, Boulder, Colorado. This retort, which was developed through experimentation in the bureau's laboratories, has been found to be convenient in use and. capable of yielding reproducible results. M. J. Gavin, Oil-Shale Technologist, gave valuable assistance in preparing the subject matter for publication and made many helpful suggestions during the experiments made by the writer in the course of the development of the assay retort. IN a laboratory devoted to the furtherance of the science of communication, the breadth and variety of the problems encountered are challenging to a metallurgist. In my own long association with the Bell Telephone Laboratories, our metallurgical group has dealt with a vast number of alloys, both ferrous and nonferrous, and with many materials in the border range of metallic properties., The objectives of our design engineers embrace every phase of telephony, and the properties they desire in metals are generally unusual, frequently unique, and often conflicting. Commercial alloys have not always been available with properties to meet a special requirement in the telephone plant, and many alloys have had, therefore, to be custom-made. Anyone who has had the opportunity to observe the results of tests of all types on numerous such alloys, both commercially and specially produced, or who has taken part in the development of an alloy of some necessary, but new or unusual combination of properties, could not fail to be impressed by the frequency with which a desired goal has been reached or adequately approached through the presence of decimal quantities of alloying elements. Nor could One fail to be struck by the occasions when, conversely, of a minute amount Of impurity element has rendered an alloy useful. It is no exaggeration to state that the content be- hind the decimal point often spells success or fail-ure, and the critical content is sometimes far to the right of the decimal point as I shall later illustrate. The great effects of small additions have long been recognized and have, in fact, been described by many investigators. The importance of the minute, however, cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, in this discussion, I propose to illustrate for you some of the startling instances, drawn primarily from our own experiences, wherein small, even vanishingly small, proportions of stranger elements in otherwise common aggregates have com-pletely changed the customary pattern of behavior. No one property has a monopoly as to being dis-proportionately affected by minor elements. Nearly all properties are affected, but there is time here to include only a selected few. I have chosen, there-fore, three of general interest: strength, magnetic, and electrical properties. I shall inquire into both the mechanisms and consequences of these disproportionate effects and try to share with you the fascination and challenge of this field. Strength Properties of Lead and Lead Alloys To illustrate the effect of the minute on strength properties I have selected lead and its alloys, with which we have worked extensively for many years. Lead has the advantages of being available in quantity in a state of high purity and of being fairly easy to melt and fabricate without contamination to any extent detectable by the spectrograph. Literature review and extensive field survey of line and check curtain materials and practices showed: ? Miners, in general, know how to set tight curtains, and do so when needed. ? The tradeoff is economic; tight ventilation is labor-intensive. Line and check curtain techniques found are catalogued and evaluated. A fieldworthy 10 ft extensible brattice to maintain a 10 ft setback was found in use in two mines on continuous miner faces. This technique was evaluated in the laboratory for leakage and methane control at the face. Significant results include: 1) Air leakage through a gap in the extensible curtain depends upon the ratio of the cross-sectional areas between entry and return as well as gap area; 2) Gap shape has no significant effect on methane concentrations at the face -increasing gap area diminishes ventilation effectivness; and 3) Substantial reductions of CH4 concentrations at the face were accomplished by brattice extensions with gaps of up to 5 ft2 in area. An "inby hook," inserted in the roof automatically to make possible the deployment of a longer (20 ft) brattice extension in the context of a remotely controlled miner, was tested in various roof types. Insertion of this design succeeded only in coal.

The Bureau of Mines investigated severe coal mine roof support problems along a section of main entries in the Pittsburgh coalbed in southwestern Pennsylvania to identify the causative factors. The mine roof was examined in detail, and various sedimentary structures are described that contributed directly to irregular and unstable roof. Small-scale paleochannels, scours, and related slickensides were identified as the leading cause of bad roof, and isopach maps were prepared to illustrate a method whereby the presence of these structures could be inferred in advance of mining. Probably second in importance was the occurrence of relatively incompetent flaggy, poorly cemented sandstone, weakened by coal and micaceous laminea. No effect of in situ stresses on roof stability was detected.

We propose a dynamic biomechanical simulation method that uses motion capture to evaluate the risk of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). Statistics show that WMSDs accounted for 33% of all non-fatal occupational injuries and illness in construction in 2009, and were a leading cause of temporary and permanent disability. Present methods rely largely on self-reports from workers, observational techniques, and direct measurements of motion and muscle activity to assess awkward postures, physical loads, repetitiveness, and the duration of exposure. While these methods have helped to prevent WMSDs in construction work, they may not be suitable for estimating the internal tissue loads associated with WMSDs. We propose a dynamic biomechanical simulation method to estimate internal forces and moments at each body joint of construction workers with motion capture data. Particularly, we explore the biomechanical loads by simulating active 3D musculoskeletal models based on measured postures and movements. To demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, we studied a ladder climbing task using a portable ladder under controlled laboratory conditions. Postures and motions were determined with a commercial motion capture system (e.g., VICON). The results were analyzed to investigate the feasibility of identifying risk factors based on biomechanical simulation. The results show that the proposed approach allows us to determine the biomechanical basis for WMSDs, and to identify postures and movements associated with excessive physical demands on each body joint. When combined with marker-less motion capture which is our ongoing work, the proposed approach has the potential to assess an individual?s motions and to provide personalized feedback for the purpose of reducing biomechanical loads and WMSD risk in real workplaces.

The practice of recording blasts for quality control purposes has been conducted for several decades. However, at the low frame rates of a standard video camera, essential data is frequently missed as it occurs when the shutter is closed between frames.The use of high-speed video for the research, development and monitoring of the performance of blasting procedures is a well proven but under-utilised practice.The recent development of low cost, easy to use high-speed digital cameras and user friendly software can deliver a capability into mine management as a day-to-day production tool that can greatly improve blasting performance and reduce costs.Digital high-speed video and image analysis software can accurately quantify each blast. Analysis of the images can facilitate the identification of causes of variance from design, geology changes, errors in blast practice and areas of poor performance. The use of high-speed video greatly enhances the audit and review processes so that future blast design can be quickly and appropriately modified to deliver improved blasting performance and reduced costs.The three videos demonstrate the differences between standard video and high-speed video and the detail that can be obtained from them. These videos of open cut blasts can be used to identify blast performance variances. Capturing images at 1000 frames per second allows the analysis on a millisecond timescale where detonator timings, fragmentation, venting, fume generation and flyrock can be accurately identified.CITATION:Adermann, D, Chalmers, D, Martin, C and Wellink, S, 2015.
