"A grouted helical pile was used to support new buildings in the reconstruction of a large residential development. Foundation options were complicated by urban fill underlain with variable alluvial soil. A driven timber pile and grade beam system was recommended to support the new buildings. Other foundation options are also discussed. The grouted helical pile was quoted as an alternate and ultimately won the bid based on the economics and performance of the system. Data from 8 load tests was used to develop an empirical site specific relationship for determining pile capacity based on both installing torque and installation depth. Design to incorporate tolerance on installed pile location is presented. With the three phases completed, 554 residential dwelling units supported by 3645 grouted helical piles had been constructed covering 18 city blocks on the 44 acre site. IntroductionThe Philadelphia Housing Authority reconstructed the Tasker Homes housing complex located in southern Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, adjacent to the Schuylkill Expressway in the Grays Ferry area. Keating Building Corp. and Pennoni Associates were the general contractor and the structural engineer respectively. The original Tasker Homes development was constructed from 1940 to 1941 and consisted of 44 acres of primarily two and three-story residential brick buildings. These buildings were supported by a timber pile foundation system. The structural condition of the buildings supported on the timber piles was generally good in comparison to areas outside the buildings. These areas had settled possibly up to 2-feet in places due to the heterogeneous nature of the urban fill."

The Bureau of Mines has installed passive water explosion barriers in two operating mines to determine their usefulness in U.S. coal mines. The primary objective of this field trial was to determine the effect of the explosion barriers on mining operations. Data were also obtained on the ability of the barriers to withstand the mine environment and on the effect of the barriers on belt operation, ventilation, worker travel, and rock dusting. Fifty barriers were installed at three separate beltway locations, and periodic inspections were made. A year after installation, no defects of the barriers or support hardware were detected, nor was any complaint as to the presence of the barriers made by the mine personnel. To date, 2-1/2 years after installation, the barriers have had no detrimental ef-fect on rock dusting, belt operation, or ventilation. Costs of material, fabrication, and installation are reported herein.

The Freeport Sulphur Company operates four sulphur mines in the coastal marsh area-03 South Louisiana. Employing the Frasch process of mining, approximately 13-million gallons of water per day is heated to a mining temperature of 325°F and is injected into the sulphur bearing formations of the four mines. A volume of cold waste water, roughly equal to the Input, is removed from the formations and presents a disposal problem. Two additional mines are currently being developed and will increase the disposal volume by an additional 5-million gallons per day. Although these properties are in a relatively small area, geographically speaking, as shown in Figure 1, they each represent a separate disposal problem with the treatment methods designed for the individual mine.

"Two analytical closed-form elastic-rigid-plastic solution methods to predict the rigid foundation behaviour on stone-column reinforced soil are compared, both of which takes into account the stone material yield within the host soil according to stress-dilatancy theory. These are the mechanistic methods developed by the author (2004, 2005) [that presently incorporates the dilatancy angle as per Schanz and Vermeer (1996)] and that developed by Pulko and Majes (2006), that takes into account the column yield as per Rowe dilatancy theory. Since optimal design of stone column necessitates optimum stress concentration on column, which is generally composed of dense gravel with/or without sand, the vertical stress on granular column is often close to its peak strength and the material dilates. To arrive at closed-form analytic solution to this complex soil-stone column interaction problem, some common assumptions like axi-symmetric soilstone column ‘unit-cell’, elastic host soil and rigid-plastic Mohr-Coulomb stone column material are combined with equilibrium and kinematic conditions. The results reflect the beneficial effect of dilatancy within the optimal range or techno-economic domain of area-ratio. The settlement predictions are compared with other analytical methods available in literature as well as with measured settlement reduction of stonecolumn reinforced ground at different subsoil conditions around the globe reported in literature.INTRODUCTIONStone columns or granular piles are frequently used in stabilization of soft clays, silts and loose silty-sands with large amount of fines. The majority of analytical methods assume infinitely wide loaded area with end-bearing columns having constant diameter and spacing that approximate to axi-symmetric conditions, and the approach is known as ‘unit-cell concept’. Several analytical solutions are available, and many of them (Aboshi et al; 1979, Balaam & Booker; 1981) are based on elastic approach considering the stonecolumn and surrounding soil as elastic materials. However, elastic methods give the ratio between the vertical stress in the column to soil (stress concentration factor) approximately equal to the ratio of constrained modulus of both materials. This ratio was found to be considerably higher than measured in the field and it is believed that elastic methods may overestimate the effects of stone columns on settlement reduction (Barksdale & Bachus, 1983). The elastic and elasto-plastic solutions presented by Balaam and Booker (1981, 1985) indicate that the problem can be idealized by assuming that the stone column is in a triaxial state and possibly yielding, such that there is no shear stress at the stone-soil interface and no yielding in the soil. Similar assumptions of stone column to be in a state of limiting equilibrium and under a triaxial stress state are considered in other methods also (Priebe; 1976, Van Impe & De Beer; 1983, Van Impe & Madhav; 1992, Saha & De; 1994, Saha; 2004, 2005, Pulko & Majes; 2006). In majority of the methods it is assumed that under load the stone-column yields at constant volume. However, the last three cases cited consider another parameter; the dilation of stone column. In Van Impe and Madhav’s (1992) and author’s (2004, 2005) method, the dilation is taken into account through the final value of the volumetric strain of column, whereas Pulko & Majes (2006) considered the stone column as Mohr-Coulomb rigid-plastic; dilating at yield in line with Rowe (1962) dilatancy theory."

A geotechnical forensic evaluation of piles for an industrial facility in Haryana was performed to assess the quality of the piles and to evaluate piles installed using two different types of rigs. Low strain pile integrity tests were performed on all piles to assess the pile length and possible presence of structural defects. Coring was done through questionable piles for the clinching evidence of concrete quality and pile length. Probe holes adjoining piles helped confirm the bulging of piles at shallow depth. The paper highlights the importance of implementing a well-planned quality assurance program to confirm that all piles installed are of the desired quality.

Mine-to-mill studies have previously demonstrated downstream productivity benefits from relatively modest increases in blast energy, or powder factor. These increases have up to now been limited by safety and environmental constraints, since excessive blast energy can result in flyrock, unacceptable vibration, airblast and wall damage.Here, a new blasting method that overcomes these constraints is presented. For the first time it is possible to employ powder factors that are several fold higher than conventional blasting. Independent modelling has shown that such powder factors can potentially increase mill throughput by 20 to 40 per cent. The economic implications are substantial, both in terms of increasing production in existing operations and in consideration of capital and plant requirements for greenfield sites. In addition, mill electricity and grinding media consumption and their associated costs and energy and emissions penalties can be reduced.This method represents a step-change in blasting practices. It involves a novel design utilising dual blast layers within a single blast event, all initiated with state-of-the art electronic blasting systems. The energies in the lower layer can be as high as five times the standard energies, providing for intense fragmentation of the ore. Results from blast models have been confirmed in field trials of the method.Open cut gold mining, in particular, stands to benefit from this method. As gold grades decline, milling costs and throughput increasingly become constraints on production that can be alleviated with this new method. Additionally, it opens possibilities for improved recovery. Blast modelling studies show that dilution of gold ore within the blast can be managed with the new method. Furthermore, it has been shown that vibration from the new method is actually lower than from conventional blasting, allowing the use of the technique in proximity to mine highwalls and other key infrastructure such as underground orepasses.It is concluded that this new method could substantially increase gold mine production and profitability while reducing overall energy consumption and associated emissions.CITATION:Brent, G F, Dare-Bryan, P, Hawke, S and Rothery, M, 2013. This study proposes a new approach to reduce the environmental impact during surface mining by improving environmental factors through the incorporation of carbon footprint into strategic mine planning. Two key variables were analysed by contrasting and comparing the baseline and optimised models generated. These variables include net present value, which helps determine the financial feasibility of the mining models and their carbon emissions. The variables were analysed by using linear regression, Spearman’s correlation, a P-value hypothesis, and an exponential decay test. Results show that at Mine A the projected net present value was 62% higher than when running a baseline model. Furthermore, the net present value from the baseline model portrayed a high rate of decay at 0.667 versus 0.118 from the optimised model. This indicates the baseline model’s sensitivity to long-term project timelines and fluctuating markets. The optimised method presents an opportunity to manage emissions during the high operational costs phases. It is represented by a 31% improvement in carbon emissions during the periods of high operational costs, whilst maintaining a positive net present value when compared with the baseline model. It was shown that the optimised model presents a better chance of achieving financial feasibility and balancing environmental impact, thereby ensuring that Mine A can align with the environmental aspect of economic, social, and governance principles through lowering the carbon footprint resulting from its hauling operations.

As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. "The study was conducted with the sulfide mineral from the province of Zamora Chinchipe. It was characterized physical, chemical and mineralogical, obtaining between its main results a copper concentration of head ore of 0,58 %. The mineral was homogenized and taken to direct closed circuit: rollers mill - vibratory sieve (mesh # 16). Flotation was carried out in two stages: the collective and selective where in each one were performed 6 water recirculation as suggested by the technique used to relate information of a batch flotation to a continuous circuit called cyclic flotation tests (LCT). In the collective flotation (bulk) 2 Kg of mineral were grinded with 10 Kg of balls for 30 minutes and 62.5% of solids, the pulp was taken to the flotation process with solids percentages of 33.3% and pH 7, it was conditioned with 45 g / t of KAX 1%, 50 g/t of Aerofloat 208 and 20 g /t of Pine oil. The concentrate and tailings bulk obtained were filtered separately for the recovery of water and it was recirculated to the next grinding of 2kg mineral. In the selective flotation 1Kg of bulk concentrate was carried to regrind for 40 min, 62.5% percent of solids, 10 g of lime and 5 g of tannin FLOATAN T5, the pulp was taken to the roughing-collection-refining flotation circuit controlling the pH between 10.5 and 11 where conditioning (60 g/t of Aerofloat 208 and 30 g/t of Pine oil) and adding lime to the circuit and FLOATAN according to the procedure. The four fractions obtained from the circuit were filtered; the water was recirculated to the regrind process of the bulk concentrate. In the collective flotation process tends to stability in the fourth recirculating water to obtain a copper content of 4.5% and a recovery of 87%, recirculated water represents 69.8% of all water used in the 6 recycles. In the selective flotation circuit the fifth recirculating of water is the optimal where obtaining a copper content of 13% and a recovery of 72%, recirculated water in the selective flotation circuit represents 95% of the total water used in the 6 recycles."

Coal-clay waste slurries were dewatered in laboratory-and small-scale continuous tests by the Bureau of Mines using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. Dewatering from a nominal 7-wt-pct solids to over 50-wt-pct solids was accomplished using 0.5 lb of PEO per ton of feed in small-scale continuous tests. Parameters such as pH, initial solids content, and PEO concentrations were investigated. Water recovered from dewatering was reused as dilutant for PEO solutions.

IN COMPARISON with recent years 1932 has yielded much less tangible evidence of progress in copper reduction and refining. The industry has been extremely quiet, especially in the United States. Design and construction has been throttled by lack of new capital expenditures. The excess producing capacity of the whole industry and the extremely gloomy outlook for the future have made it unwise to tie up more capital except under special conditions. The plants built during the previous year have, however, been placed in operation. Older plants have been abandoned, temporarily shut down, placed on part time operating basis, or continue to operate at a low percentage of normal capacity. In the United States the Phelps Dodge Corporation at Douglas, Ariz., has completed the remodeling of the former Calumet & Arizona smelter. A new roaster and Cottrell plant chimney was completed this year. Though operations have been limited the new equipment has been found to justify all expectations. The reverberatory plant addition consists of two furnaces 26 by 107 ft. inside dimensions, with a high arch, and modern steel binding of excellent design. Natural gas fuel gives good results. One of these furnaces will treat 1000 tons of solid charge per day with a fuel consumption of approximately 3,000,000 B.t.u. per ton. The larger converters have not only yielded the expected lower costs, but have simplified operations in the converter department. Rhenium is primarily recovered as a byproduct from molybdenum roasting circuits. However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations, and this represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita Mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process. Copper heap leaching dissolves more than just copper from the copper ore. Several metals can be identified in leach solutions at concentrations of financial interest, rhenium in particular. Rhenium spot prices ranged from a yearly average of $1,070/kg ($483/lb) in 2005 (Magyar, 2008) to $10,400/kg ($4,706/lb) in 2008 (Polyak, 2013). The spot price in September 2013 was approximately $3,000/kg ($1,357/lb) of rhenium (Metal Bulletin, 2013). Several facilities at Freeport-McMoRan have very low rhenium concentrations in their copper leach solutions, ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 mg/L. The large quantity of solution available, if coupled with an attractive rhenium price, means that the rhenium contained in leach solutions may represent a significant value if a method of extraction could be developed. Testing has confirmed that rhenium adsorbs onto activated carbon much more selectively than other metals in the pregnant leach solution (PLS). A 100-gpm pilot plant was constructed to verify the lab-scale results on a larger basis and establish operating parameters for a full-scale operation. This report summarizes the initial technology development and pilot plant operation.

The efforts to mechanize narrow reef tabular orebodies unique to this country, are not new. They began in the early 1900s and have over the last century seen varied rates of progress and success. Efforts to mechanize with the use of scraper winches can be regarded as a success. The scraper winch replaced the hand lashing of ore and development waste into hoppers. The initiatives by Anglo Gold and the then JCI to implement trackless mining equipment into these environments had limited success but in general were looked upon as a failure?at least this is the perception. The Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) in conjunction with various mining houses tried to make a success of the impact ripper. Diamond wire cutting of the stope face is another, which has been tried and tested. The use of high-pressure water to cut rock has also been trialed. These attempts, amongst others, are just a few of the efforts that have not been successful in the quest to make life at the face safer, more productive and easier for our employees. Against the backdrop of an emerging South Africa, the associated high expectations of historically disadvantaged people within the country, a strong rand, demands for better safety, lower cost of production and more efficient operations, mechanization has the chance to make a difference to Anglo Platinum?s business. Mechanization has certainly changed the way other commodities such as coal, base metals and diamonds are won from the earth. Mining?s image is still one of people crawling around in stopes?a dirty, ?low-tech? business. Anglo Platinum?s latest journey to mechanize its underground operations began in earnest in1998 and has enjoyed some successes and failures. The opportunity to change the way mining is done within the company is there. Technologies are evolving, and the implementation of mechanization can certainly assist with the achievement of the goals referred to above. When mechanization commenced, targets were set for the company to achieve but these have been revised in the light of recent events relating to the strengthening rand and a slow-down in expansion plans. However, the intent to mechanize appropriately in Anglo Platinum still exists.

Oil can enter a flotation circuit from a number of sources (for example, from mining equipment, oil leaks from the grinding equipment and coatings on the grinding media, but to name a few). Folklore generally states that any oil that contaminates the ore entering the flotation circuit is considered to have a negative impact on flotation. That is, a loss in concentrate grade and recovery.This represents a dilemma for some grinding media suppliers, who use a variety of quenching medium (air, polymer, oil or water) to achieve the desired physical properties of the ball. In the case of high chrome grinding media it is necessary, in some instances, to quench in oil to give the ball the right degree of toughness, which invariably leads to these balls having a thin film of oil on their surface. Once the grinding media arrives on site and site personnel recognise that the balls are “covered” in oil, they generally insist that the oil will have a deleterious impact on flotation performance.Obviously, any supplier “worth their salt” would take remedial action at the point of manufacture to minimise this problem. However, does quenching oil actually present a significant “threat” to the flotation process? This paper provides both laboratory and plant data describing the effect quenching oil has on the flotation of copper sulphide ore, with surprising results!

Search Minerals has developed a Direct Extraction Process for recovery of rare earths from the Foxtrot and Deep Fox deposits in Labrador Canada. The process includes crushing, acid treatment, water leaching, impurity removal, precipitation of an intermediate rare earth product and finally re fining of the intermediate product to produce a high purity mixed rare earth oxide (*99% total rare each oxides). The Direct Extraction Process has been validated in an extensive demonstration pilot plant program at SGS Minerals. A total of 3 tonnes of material was processed to produce final mixed rare earth product. The results of the demonstration pilot plant program are reported.

NQ Minerals PLC, through Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd, plans to reprocess the contents of the Hellyer tailings dam to produce lead/silver concentrate, zinc concentrate and pyrite concentrate (containing Au and Ag). This paper discusses the project development, mineralogy, metallurgy and chemistry of processing Hellyer tailings and the associated environmental benefits. The Hellyer and Fossey orebodies were volcanic hosted polymetallic massive sulphide deposits located within the Mount Read volcanic arc of western Tasmania. Mineralisation was hosted in massive sulphide (pyrite) and comprised predominantly of sphalerite, with lesser galena, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The Hellyer orebody was mineralogically complex (fine grained) and was treated through differential flotation with initially modest recoveries. Fossey ore processing characteristics were similar to those of Que River ore and simpler than Hellyer but treatment still resulted in significant grades in flotation tailings. Pictured on these pages are the seven RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1987-88 year followed by a brief profile. Six of the winners were present as RMCMI guests at the June convention in Breckenridge, Colorado to receive their recognition plaques at the welcome session held Monday, June 27, 1988. In addition to the plaques, each winner receives $500.00 to be used toward tuition in the coming academic year. Also, as this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will also receive an additional $500.00 for tuition use in their senior years provided they have maintained a good academic standing and are recommended by their university. Criteria for these awards is (1) That the award be made in the spring to a sophomore student to be used toward tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the state involved. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program was extended in early 1988 to include curricula other than mining department, but in the engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy.
