The main platinum-group metal (PGM) deposit in the Stillwater Complex is associated with a stratiform zone formed by magma mixing. In general, the intrusion is a large, layered body of Archean age which formed by repeated magmatic injections in- to a single, large, hypabyssal magma chamber. The Complex is broadly divided into the lower Ultramafic series of olivine ± orthopyroxene rocks (1000-2000 m thick) and the upper Banded series of predominantly plagioclase-rich rocks (24500 m thick). The latter is further divided into Lower, Middle, and Up- per Banded zones. The Ultramafic series, plus most of the Lower and Upper Banded zones formed from repeated injections of an olivine-saturated magma, the rocks accumulating from the floor upward with a crystallization order of olivine, or- thopyroxene, plagioclase, clinopyroxene. The olivine-bearing subzones of the Middle Banded zone formed predominantly from a magma which crystallized in the sequence plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene. Olivine-bearing subzone I, with which the PGM mineralization is associated, occurs generally -400 m above the Ultramafic series-Banded series contact. Ore grade mineralization is usually found in plagioclase or plagioclase-olivine cumulates. The platinum-group elements are associated with disseminated base-metal sulfides dominated by the assemblage, pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pentlandite. Olivine-bearing subzone I marks an interruption in the crystallization sequence of the Lower Banded zone, with the reappearance of cumulus olivine and an associated change of the crystallization sequence. These changes indicate the addition and mixing of a secondary magma of the same composition as that which later dominated in the formation of the Middle Banded zone. Characteristics associated with mixing include laterally discontinuous but well-developed layers, xenoliths of ultramafic rocks, and sedimentary-type structures such as slum- ping and graded layering. The influx of new magma caused sulfide saturation by one or more of several chemical changes including addition of sulfur, decrease in oxygen fugacity, decrease in FeO, or increase in SiO2. Once an immiscible sulfide liquid was formed, platinum-group elements were scavenged from the magma by the sulfide liquid and segregated.

The Bureau of Mines is studying cupola ironmel technology with the objectives of conserving high-quality raw materials through substitution and productivity. In the research re-ported here, a ize was modified by a gas-fired melting and/or ing chamber into the stack above the level of the coke bed, for study as a prototype for a coal-fired melting chamber. The modified cupola, in which natural gas was used to partially replace foundry coke, was evaluated in several trial runs. Data were obtained on furnace performance, metal and slag chemistry, and scrubber waters as particulates. Results of the modified ion were compared to those of conventional cupola operation. Although this research was preliminary--since the ultimate goal is to use pulverized coal instead of yielded ample evidence that the melting rate of a cupola can be icantly increased with less than a increase in energy input. Other evidence suggests that melting of low-density scrap can be enhanced and that scrap containing undesirable and/or oxidizable elements can be appreciably upgraded. This work is continuing and will include the use of pulverized coal of low rank to assist in melting.

The use of high-efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) for large scale, open pit mine dewatering operations provides a good example of how technology, products and services from the oil and gas industry can be adapted to the mining industry. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito in the Zacatecas state of Mexico, at the Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit deposits. The technology, products and services are from Schlumberger artificial lift (AL) and Schlumberger industrial water services (IWS). Overview of high-efficiency ESPs This section provides a brief description of the basic components, specifications and operating capacity ranges for the ESPs compared with traditional or conventional dewatering well pumps. This information helps to establish how ESPs provide certain functional and economic advantages over conventional pumps in a mine dewatering application. A schematic of a high-efficiency ESP in an oil and gas (O&G) application is shown in Fig. 1.

THE modern coal cutter is a highly developed, and to a certain extent a somewhat complicated, machine. The requisite power to cope with conditions as found must be generated by the motor with due regard to limitations in the matter of dimensions and weight. This imposes the necessity of relatively high speeds of rotation. Any factor external to the machine proper which tends to reduce the load on the motor and gearing is most important. Experience has proved that close attention to the question of cutter-chain details undoubtedly results, in practically every coal-cutting operation, in increased efficiency and reduction of power and maintenance costs. The chain is the unit of the coal cutter which most greatly affects the economical operation of the machine, and only by due consideration of conditions and by the proper selection of the right chain can best results be expected; also, intelligent care of the chain while in operation is essential if it is to give its best service. The chain is the part of the machine that carries the pick boxes or blocks, which are connected to each other by a pair of chain links. The power to drive the chain is trans-mitted by a sprocket. The chain runs in guides supported by a rigid member called a 'jib'. Figure 1 shows the various parts mentioned. The first requirement of a chain is that it cut the coal as fast as possible. The second is that it do so economically. Economy of cutting can conveniently be divided as follows: (1) Economy in power used. (2) Economy in pick life. (3) Economy ' in chain life. ( 4) Economy in jib life. (5) Economy in labour for maintenance.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTFatalities from falls of roof and coal are responsible for the death of more than 1,000 miners annually in the bituminous coal mines of the United States or practically one—half of the total fatalities in and about these mines. The men are killed by falls singly or in small groups and little or no publicity is given these accidents as they lack the spectacular features of gas and dust explosions. As a result, the public and even the miners have the impression that accidents from falls of roof and coal are just one of the unavoidable hazards of the coal—mining industry. This belief is not true. Accidents caused by falls can be avoided largely by the application of sound engineering principles, by education, and by proper leadership in the industry, just as gas and dust explosions and accidents caused by explosives have been reduced in recent years.The necessity for studying falls of roof and coal becomes apparent by referring to the following data from a table by Adams and Chenoweth:3"

This paper describes the general principles of the expander body with post-grouting (EBI) system, and how it is similar in nature to a large-scale pressuremeter device. The results from the installation of an EBI can be used to provide information about the stress-strain characteristics of the soil adjacent to the device and to compute estimates of nominal axial resistance. As the EBI expands during grouting, pressure is applied to the in-situ soil surrounding the device thereby compacting/densifying the soil. The nominal axial resistance for small diameter piles/ground anchors can be increased due to the greater soil stiffness and shear strength around the device, larger surface and end area, and improved soil-to-EBI interaction in side resistance. The shape of the response curves depends on the geotechnical conditions of the soil (e.g., in-situ stress state, strength, and stiffness) and the installation method of the piling/ground anchor. This technique has been used successfully with different pile types and ground anchors in a wide range of conditions from very loose sands/silts to very dense sands and medium-dense gravels as well as in soft to stiff clays. This paper also describes a mini case history in which 80 piles were installed to support an office building, and the results of the static axial compression load tests performed on a production FDP+EBI pile is also included.

Admixture use in cement products is commonplace in the construction and mining industries. Many Australian mines have an operational concrete batch plant and stock hydration control and water reducing admixtures. The benefits of admixture use, especially in shotcrete is understood and well documented. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used to fill stope voids and create stable vertical and undercut surfaces at some Australian mines. These mines generally mix rock fill with a slurry of cement and water without the use of admixtures. Recently published work on optimisation of CRF mixes has mainly focused on the strength increases associated with changes to the mix grading proportions by the addition of fines, but not focusing on the potential benefits of admixture use. Admixture use in CRF may be the simplest CRF optimisation method, as the admixtures will often be added by the push of a button at the batch plant. A CRF testing program was undertaken to test the benefits of admixture use in terms of strength gain, using hydration control additives (HCA) and high range water reducer (HRWR) admixtures. Rock fill gradings were strictly controlled in the test process to allow clear definition of the difference admixtures provide in compression at 28 days. The testing results define admixture associated strength gains in a 6 per cent general purpose (GP) cement by dry weight CRF mix (131 kg of cement/m3). Costings have been developed to allow a mine operator to understand the cost benefits of admixture use in CRF due to reduced operating costs. Operational efficiency advances and a suggested admixture implementation plan for CRF optimisation is offered.

This paper describes research conducted under the BuMines's Advancing Metal and Nonmetal Mining Technology Program, a major element being the application of new and improved technology to shaft design in deep underground vein-type mines. Two basic design parameters considered in shaft planning are configuration (shape) and ground support. The most common shapes are circular and rectangular. Ground support systems include concrete, timber sets, steel sets, rock bolts, and steel liners. The inherent advantages and/or disadvantages of various shaft designs such as ventilation and fire resistance, flexibility and ground support characteristics are well known. Circular concrete-lined shafts have minimal resistance to air flora and are virtually fireproof, an important consideration in deep hot mines. However, concrete does not yield significantly, and failure conditions and misalignment cannot be easily repaired. Timber-supported rectangular shafts predominate in the Coons d'Alene Mining District with its highly stressed and frequently heavy ground. The sets can be relieved and reblocked when out of alignment. However, the constant maintenance and repair requirements result in exposure to an inherently dangerous working environment combined with excessive operating costs. Obviously a dilemma exists--a circular, concrete-lined opening has many desirable features, provided it is strong enough to withstand the stresses involved. Rectangular, timber supported shafts have proven adequate in the Coeur d'Alenes; however, the implication of increased maintenance and repair requirements on ever-deepening shafts in this district and other similar areas will be an important design consideration in the future. This paper, then, presents shaft-configuration and ground-support guidelines to help remove some of the uncertainty concerning the stresses to be encountered in typical deep vein mining areas.

The decline of ore grades on land, increasing demand and high prices for various minerals have led to an increased interest in mining the deep ocean sea floor. The potential deep ocean reserves are vast and in some circumstances the grades are high enough to consider mining. However, the consequences of such mining are as yet uncertain. This paper will present the results of a comparative assessment of life cycle impacts of deep ocean minerals. Two alternative extraction technologies from different deep ocean resource types were examined and key commodities are considered. Initial results indicate that the energy requirements will be higher than the average land-based resources, but may fall within the range of the deepest terrestrial mines.CITATION:McLellan, B C, 2015. To conserve fresh water resources and comply with environmental regulations, DRDGOLD, a South African gold producer re-treating surface tailings, has transitioned to a fully closed water circulation system. Consequently, the accumulation of contaminants, as well as addition of reagents, has led to changes in water composition that have compromised leach performance and overall gold recovery. A two-sample t-test confirmed a significant difference in gold recoveries between the use of Rand Water, which was used as a benchmark, and untreated process water. Atomic absorption analysis of ERGO’s process water, confirmed the presence of iron, nickel, zinc, and manganese. A study of the effect of the identified contaminants on gold recovery showed that iron, nickel, and zinc have the largest negative effect on gold recovery, with iron and nickel being more detrimental than zinc. Sulphates were shown to have a possible passivation effect, which also influenced gold recoveries, although to a lesser extent than the heavy metals. Calcium, when present in excess, had a positive influence on gold recovery indicating the possible formation of a calcium aurocyanide complex. Lime softening successfully reduced the heavy metal and sulphate concentrations, and the gold recoveries obtained with the treated process water were similar to those as achieved with Rand Water.

To solve the problem of large deformation of deep soft rock roadway, taking the soft rock roadway of no. 1 coal mine in New Shanghai as an engineering example, the deformation mechanism of surrounding rock of deep soft rock roadway is analyzed by combining theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field test, and the control countermeasures centering on deep and shallow dense drilling are put forward. Through theoretical derivation, based on the masonry beam theory, surrounding rock structure S-R stability principle and composite beam principle, the length, angle, and spacing of deep and shallow dense drilling are determined. Through numerical simulation, the deformation evolution process of soft rock roadway surrounding rock after dense drilling pressure relief is reproduced, and the influence of drilling parameters (drilling spacing, dip angle) on pressure relief effect is analyzed and compared. The field application test and monitoring verify that the deformation control measures of deep and shallow dense drilling broken roof surrounding rock have a good effect of large deformation control of soft rock roadway, and provide a new support means for the safety and stability control of soft rock roadway.

The yield strength of annealed tungsten was found to have a strain rate exponent 12 times as great as that of low carbon steel. The effects of temperature and strain rate could be correlated through the Zener-Hollomon parameter with a heat of activation associated with yielding of 32,000 cal per g-atom. This heat of activation is independent of strain although both the temperature and strain rate dependence of the yield strength vary with strain. MOST metals have mechanical properties that are relatively insensitive to strain rate, especially at temperatures below that at which creep is important. In iron and molybdenum," however, relatively large strain rate effects are observed in the temperature range where the rapid increase in yield strength occurs which leads to the ductile to brittle transition. In this temperature range Zener and Hollomon' have suggested that the effects of strain rate and temperature T on the yield strength could be correlated through a single parameter, P, in the following manner where Q is a heat of activation characteristic of the metal and associated with some unspecified relaxation process. They also observed that if the temperature is restricted to a relatively narrow range— below room temperature for steel—that the logarithm of the yield strength could be expressed as a linear function of the logarithm of P. From this relation the logarithm of stress should be a linear function of the logarithm of the strain rate at constant temperature: where r will be referred to herein as the strain rate exponent. At a constant strain rate the logarithm of stress should be a linear function of l/T, ay(e = C) ~ eT [4] where q = Qr [5] and is referred to herein as the temperature exponent. These equations have been found to relate the effects of temperature and strain rate on the yield strength of molybdenum in the temperature range wherein the ductile to brittle transition occurs, —75° to +150°C.2 Bechtold and Shewmon3 have shown recently that the ductile to brittle transition in annealed tungsten occurs in the temperature range +150° to +350°C. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo evaluar el efecto del volumen de contenedor, la fertilización y riego en la fase de preacondicionamiento en vivero del Pinus douglasiana, así como su aplicación metodológica en Acacia Saligna, con el fin de incrementar el porcentaje de supervivencia a seis meses de su establecimiento en campo. El preacondicionamiento presentó efectos principales e interacciones entre el volumen de contenedor y la fertilización en las variables de crecimiento, con excepción de la altura y diámetro; mientras que el diámetro y peso radical presentaron una interacción entre el volumen de contenedor y el riego. La fertilización adicional no fue relevante para la absorción de minerales en contenedores de un litro y bajo condiciones de estrés hídrico. Como resultado, las plantas establecidas en contenedores de cinco litros sin fertilización adicional tuvieron mayores porcentajes de sobrevivencia en campo (>80%). Esta investigación está siendo utilizada para el diseño de estrategias de remediación de suelos degradados por la minería peruana, mediante la fitorremediación.

The potential of rockfall at open-pit mines presents a continuous hazard to mine workers and is typically mitigated by designing catch benches at empirically determined widths. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is working in conjunction with industry and academia to revisit and update current catch bench guidelines to better match acceptable risk tolerances for modern mining practices. To begin this process, a rockfall testing program was designed to gather empirical runout and bench catchment data at partnering mine sites in the Western United States. This paper presents a detailed description of each component of the rockfall testing program, including scouting and safety plan development, equipment requirements, synthetic rock development for uniform testing across varying bench configurations, local rock collection for testing of mine-specific geology, data acquisition during testing, and data processing. Additionally, this paper describes how the program has been updated over time according to lessons learned during initial rockfall testing.

Algumas estratégias vêm sendo incorporadas na cominuição de minérios, voltadas para reduzir os custos operacionais (OPEX) e garantir o funcionamento de suas operações no longo prazo. Paralelamente, elas permitem reduzir os impactos ambientais desta operação sob a ótica da sustentabilidade, devido às melhorias na eficiência de uso dos recursos e na mitigação das mudanças climáticas. Porém, a incorporação dessas estratégias é restrita pelo tipo de tecnologia empregada e pelo layout da usina e, portanto, o maior potencial de minimização dos impactos econômicos e ambientais encontra-se principalmente na etapa de projeto dos circuitos. Este potencial muitas vezes é desperdiçado, sendo ainda poucas as implementações sistemáticas adotadas na indústria mineral, visando melhorar a ecoeficiência dos processos. Neste trabalho é proposta uma metodologia fundamentada em princípios de sustentabilidade e aplicável ao beneficiamento de minérios, usando uma abordagem simplificada da Avaliação de Ciclo de Vida (ACV). A metodologia é focada na cominuição de minérios brasileiros, tendo sido aplicada ao beneficiamento de Itabiritos, os quais estão se tornando estratégicos no Brasil.

Introduction The Hollinger cyanidation mill commenced operating in June, 1912, and 49,779,978 tons of solids had been discarded by the end of 1950. The present tailing disposal plant has been in operation since 1924 and holds 39,762,250 tons. The tailing disposal plant is on the property of Kayorum Gold Mines, Limited, about a mile and a quarter south of the mill. The area available for tailing covers 640 acres and is roughly l ¼ miles long by ¾ mile wide. Tailing was first deposited on the McKay veteran claims, l mile long by 1/2 mile wide, which were later included in the Kayorum property. This site sloped from northeast to southwest, the slope amounting to 106 feet between the northeast corner and the low land to the southwest. The low land was wet and a considerable area was covered with muskeg up to 17 feet deep. It was drained by a brook running across the property in a southwesterly direction. Later, when more ground was needed, the low-lying mining claims adjacent to the south and west boundaries were acquired to allow for the extension of the plant. This entailed some extra difficulties and expense that would not have been encountered had the whole of the present site been acquired with the original purchase. At the present time, the top of the tailing deposit stands at two elevations, but eventually the tailing deposited on the extension to the original plant will be raised to the same height as the older deposit. Previous to 1924, all of the tailing was deposited on Low land and in lakes near the mil1. Between 1924 and 1926 an increasing tonnage was sent to the McKay claims until, in 1926, all of it was being sent there. In 1936, the area of the deposit was extended and shortly afterwards all of the tailing was deposited on the new site.

Sublevel stoping is the most popular and practiced mining method in underground hard rock mines. Proper planning and its execution is the key requirement for stope extraction using this method. The stope extraction has been a challenging task since decades. The major reason is the unavailability of free faces as compared to opencast bench blasting. The geological and geotechnical parameters change gradually even within the stope itself. So, the blast design parameters should be planned according to the scenario of the upcoming ring. The blast design parameters like burden, toe spacing, inclination of blastholes, diameter of blastholes, charge density of explosive, etc., play an immense role in the rock damage. For the proper breakage of rock, the movement of burden is the prime objective. To study this, an explicit dynamic based modeler of M/s Ansys was used. The burden values were varied from 20 to 65 times of blasthole diameter to assess the optimum burden value during the study. The models were simulated for the rock having uniaxial compressive strength as 35 MPa and 102 mm blasthole diameter. Three holes were simulated having depth around 14–14.5 m. Different blast design parameters and respective blast-induced ground vibration have also been measured at the experimental site. The core samples of the rock present at the experimental site have been used for the evaluation of geotechnical parameters. These geotechnical parameters were used in the simulation models. The volume of rock excavated along the free face has been calculated in each model by varying the burden. It has been found that the burden value can varies from 35 to 40 times blasthole diameter (3.6–4.1 m) to achieve a greater volume of rock along the free face for 102 mm blasthole diameter and rock of 35 MPa uniaxial compressive strength.

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd engaged in the test work, design, manufacturing and commissioning of the pre-concentration plant at Silver Standard Resources Inc’s Pirquitas mine in the north western Jujuy province of Argentina. Testing of the ore at coarse feeds of between 2 and 12mm returned probable recoveries of up to a total of 95% silver into 50% of the mass fed to the InLine Pressure Jigs (IPJ’s). The plant has been designed and built based on the test results to include a preparation screen to bypass the fines that are naturally higher in grade and repulping of the coarse which is then pumped to three parallel trains of 2-stage IPJ roughing-scavenging. The target 50% yield to concentrate passes over a dewatering screen and the solids are returned back to the mill feed conveyor. The IPJ tails are transferred to a dewatering screen and solid rejects are stockpiled off the end of a transfer conveyor. All dewatered underflow products are processed via hydrocyclones to recover dirty water for use back into the IPJ circuit and return entrained fines to the fines bypass line.With the sulphide orebody being processed, the results from operations to date have shown that plant performance is matching the original laboratory sulphide ore testwork data. The objective of the pre-concentration step is to both reject gangue and achieve grades between 300-400g/t Ag to the float circuit as flotation recoveries are maximised within this range. The plant currently achieves overall upgrades of approximately 150% of feed grade with the IPJ only circuit producing an average 180% increase from calculated feed grade.
