Gas analysis is of great practical value to the combustion engineer as a guide in the proper deli and operation of power and heating plants. The automotive industry, however, has made little use of gas analysis in the design and construction of engines. Tests4 made by the Bureau of Mines have shorn that for the average motor vehicle approximately 30 per cent of the heat value of the gasoline passes out in the exhaust as incomplete-combustion products. The tendency at present is to pay more attention to ease and flexibility of operation than to efficiency of combustion. However, neither condition can be fully realized except where each cylinder gets a mixture of the same composition - that is, when certain cylinders do not "load up" with gas at the expense of the others. When this occurs, due to some of the cylinders having too rich a mixture while in others it is too lean, it is impossible to get efficient combustion from the fuel used. Gas analysis enables the engineer to determine the quality of the mixture fed to the different cylinders with a high degree of precision. Briefly, the method consists in making an analysis of the exhaust gas from each cylinder while the engine is in operation.

Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and point cloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors such as site specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using discontinuity set extractor (DSE). Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time. The analysis determined that the automated mapping algorithm was able to identify the same discontinuity sets that had been manually mapped. The automated mapping software mapped an excessive amount of smaller fractures, which caused the comparison of both mapping techniques to be unsuccessful in terms of trace length and spacing.

This report describes the results of Bureau of Mines laboratory and preliminary field tests on a rock bolt of helical shape. The flexible construction allows the bolt to maintain a more stable load level than is possible with a straight bolt. Bolt load changes resulting from anchor slippage, blasting shock, or changes in mine geometry with mining advance are minimized. Preliminary field tests were performed at the Kaiser Steel York Canyon mine where the load changes of straight and helical bolts were measured using a vibrating-wire load gage. The field tests were performed to establish the viability of the concept of a helical bolt. The practical usefulness in terms of performance and economics remains to be shown. The change in bolt load for the flexible bolts was one-third that for the straight bolts. There were no malfunctions of the gage, and the bolts maintained a more uniform load than the straight bolts used as controls.

Little precise information is available on the effect of mining on the surface topography. It is often assumed that after mining the surface will simply sink. This is not an infallible conclusion as is well illustrated in two of the three examples herein. This paper describes the results of an attempt to precisely measure the surface movement in the area around coal pillars left in place for three oil wells in a completely mined and caved area at the Harwick Mine of the Duquesne Light Company. The dates when the various measurements were made are shown on the data sheets and indicate the rate of surface movement. These oil wells are identified as wells Nos. 2, 3, and 6. This mine property is located on the north side of the Allegheny River at Cheswick, Pennsylvania, and extends in a northerly and westerly direction about five miles. The three well pillars are situated on the westerly side of the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad some 2,000 feet from Rural Ridge, Pennsylvania (Fig, 1).

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, two drill-split mechanical excavation mining system concepts are described, casted, and cost compared with conventional drill-blast mining systems. The concepts for the two drill-split mechanical excavation mining systems presented are (1) a method for steeply dipping narrow veins 0.6 to 1.2 m wide and (2) a longwall method for fiat-lying tabular ores. In the proposed systems, 70 to 80 pet of the ore is disposed of underground as backfill. For sortable ores, face area crushing, sorting, and direct stowage of run-of-mine waste and low-grade ores are proposed. The underground sorting and stowing of waste reduce materials handling, processing, and waste disposal costs by reducing the quality of ore transported to the surface by 70 to 80 pet (by volume). Because many of the tools and techniques proposed for use in these systems have little or no historical mining industry use, cost assignations are heavily influenced by engineering judgments and presented as prefeasibility-level cost estimates. These estimates, presented as discounted-cash-flow-rate-of-return (DCFROR) values, show the proposed systems to be at least as profitable as, and in some cases 50 pet more profitable than, conventional drill-blast mining.

This report covers the design and testing of a novel bulk materials conveying device by the Bureau of Mines. The transport concept of the device is to create a traveling wave with a steep front so that the bulk material slides and cascades down the front of the wave with some horizontal motion. Ideally, the front should act like a continuous chute. The concept of moving bulk materials along a belt without any forward movement of the belt itself was demonstrated. The conclusions reached were that the mechanism as designed could not overcome the inherent major disadvantages that would make the undulatory conveyor suitable for practical applications.

The generation of mining waste has been the subject of environmental, economic and social concern. Alternative and sustainable methods of recycling metals technologies are desired. The present work focuses on the application of the ion exchange technique for the extraction of metals contained in a lateritic nickel mining effluent. The Purolite S950 chelating resin was used in the present work because it has the ability to adsorb transition metals present in an acidic solution. The experiments were carried out in a batch varying the pH in the range of 0.5–2.0. 1 g of resin was placed in contact with 50 mL of solution and stirred for 120 min at a speed of 200 rpm and temperature at 25 °C. The results demonstrated that the affinity of the resin varied with pH. The adsorbed metals were only copper, manganese, magnesium and zinc. The most extracted metal was copper, corresponding to 37%, when the solution was conditioned at pH 2.0.

"Introduction.Recent experiments (Fieldner, A.C., Katz, S.H., Kinney, S.P., and Longfellow, E.S., Poisonous gas from carbon tetrachloride fire extinguishers, Jour. Franklin Institute, October, 1920, pp. 543-565), by the Bureau of Mines have shown that carbon tetrachloride extinguisher liquids when applied to fires produce small quantities of irritating and poisonous gases which may be dangerous in very closely confined spaces where conditions are such that the user can not escape without breathing the fumes. The results of the experiments have been confirmed in an independent investigation by the Underwriters Laboratories (Nuckalls, A.H., Corrosive action and products formed when carbon tetrachloride extinguisher liquids are applied to fires, Nat. Fire Protection Assoc. Quarterly, vol. 14, January, 1921, pp. 221-236) who conducted similar experiments for the purpose of determining the corrosive action of these fumes on metals. Both investigations showed that carbon tetrachloride vapor, hydrochloric acid gas, and phosgene were produced in addition to the ordinary products of combustion, such as smoke, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The Bureau of Mines' tests were made by applying a one-quart extinguisher to a wood fire of excelsior in a gas-tight room of 1000 cubic foot capacity. The glass and metal construction of this chamber limited the experimental fire to very small dimensions. It was, therefore, deemed desirable to make a test on a larger scale in the entry of the Bureau's experimental mine in order to similate more nearly the practical use of carbon tetrachloride and other types of extinguishers in mines.Description of extinguishers.Two series of tests were made under identical conditions on different days. Commercial carbon tetrachloride extinguishers were used in the first series of tests and ""foamite firefoam"" extinguishers in the second series of tests."

"CONSTRUCI'ION OF SHERRITT'S CONCENTRATORSSherritt Gordon is operating two mills north of the 56th parallel, and is presently engaged in building a third. The author was closely involved in the design and construction of all three of these concentrators.The Lynn mill is the oldest of these three concentrators-it is a 4,000 ton per day nickel-copper plant built in 1953. The Fox mill is a 3,000 ton per day copper-zinc concentrator built in 1970. The Ruttan mill will be a 10,000 ton per day copper-zinc plant scheduled to go on line in July 1973.LYNN MILL The Lynn mill including the crushing, concentrating, drying and load out plant is about 69,700 square feet or 17.4 square feet per ton per day. '!his plant was originally built in 1927 at Sherridon, 150 miles south of Lynn Lake, as a 2,000 ton per day copper-zinc plant. In 1952 the plant was moved by tractor train to Lynn Lake. The whole plant was re-oriented within the original perimeter walls as a 2,000 ton per day nickel-copper plant. This plant was expanded to 4,000 tons per day by the addition of t1-Jo rod mills and a 5-1/2 short head crusher in 1959.The Sherridon mill processed its last ore in Sherridon in September 1951 and the first load of nickel concentrate was loaded at Lynn Lake on November 9, 1953 when the railroad arrived at Lynn Lake.The site for the Lynn Lake mill was cleared of overburden in the summer of 1952 and foundations for structural steel and SO!l8 equipment foundations were poured the late summer and fall of 1952 • Steel was erected from January to June 1953. Most of the equipment came in from January to March of 1953 by tractor sleighs. Sane sleighs upset but no equipment was lest through the ice."

In order to better predict and manage benthic disturbance by deep seabed manganese nodules mining, we needed to conduct a benthic disturbance experiment at the selected area, which has a similar environmental condition as the preservation reference area. Therefore, we have performed environmental baseline studies from 2003--not only to select the benthic environmental impact testing site but, also to detect any environmental changes before and after mining activity. Since then, a large dataset of various parameters ranging from physical (e.g. temperature, salinity, current, weather), chemical (e.g. dissolved oxygen, nutrients, dissolved and particulate organic carbon), biological (e.g. bacteria, plankton, benthos), geological (e.g. Mn-nodule abundance, sediment shear strength) and others (e.g. bathymetric profile and slope, mass flux) have been accumulated. Using this dataset, descriptive statistics and cross-correlations were performed to select the benthic environmental impact testing site. Outcome of this analysis suggests that the potential benthic impact testing site would be a rectangular-shape area (10 km × 10 km) and located at 10°27'~10°33'N, 131°53'~131°58'W, which is latitudinally the same as the preservation reference area.

Sulfide ore concentrates containing cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, and iron were salt roasted and leached on a laboratory scale. More than 95 percent of the cobalt, nickel, and copper was recovered. Heating patterns for salt roasting different concentrates were established. More cobalt, nickel, and copper were recovered from a bulk concentrate composed of a mixture of copper concentrate and iron concentrate. This mixture corresponded roughly with the mixture of these materials in stockpiles in southeastern Missouri. A temperature range of 375° to 400° C. was best for salt roasting. Metal chlorides were leached at a pH of 1 from chloridized charges of concentrates, Although the amounts of cobalt, nickel, and copper extracted were high, the amount of iron dissolved simultaneously interfered with subsequent separation and recovery of these metals. The amount of dissolved iron was reduced substantially by steam treating chloridized charges of bulk concentrate at 300° C. In this way, the ratios of cobalt, nickel, and copper to iron in leach liquors permitted satisfactory separation and recovery of these metals. An iridium oxide coated titanium electrode was tested as anode in copper electrowinning. Initial results confmed that the DSA-type anode was significantly more active for oxygen evolution than traditional lead anodes. However, during longer runs, the anode potential was observed to increase linearly at a rate of 220 mV/year. Scanning elecuon microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) showed that the anode passivation could be attributed to elecuochemical dissolution of the coating. The effect on the anode potential of organic additives (glue and thiourea) and lead in solution was also examined. A preliminary economic evaluation of the anodes is given.

"The McLaughlin Mine owned by Homestake Mining Company is located 70 miles northeast of San Francisco in California's coastal range. The mine began operations in February of 1985. The mill currently processes 3,000 short-ton per day of sulfide ore that has an average grade of 0.15 ounces of gold per ton, plus another 3,000 tons per day in a newly completed oxide circuit. Annual production from the mine totals over 200,000 ounces.The sulfide ore extraction process involves three basic steps, grinding, oxidation of sulfide minerals in an autoclave, and cyanide leaching for recovery of gold in a carbon-in-pulp circuit. This process, which incorporates a new technology where oxidation of sulfide minerals is conducted prior to cyanide leaching to facilitate gold recovery, was successful from start-up. However, limitation in the grinding mills initially limited sulfide tonnage throughput.This paper discusses modifications made in the grinding circuit, both mechanical and operational, to resolve it deficiency. The SAG mill, in particular, was unable to achieve design tonnage initially and proved to be most troublesome. Complications occurred due to the hardness and variability of ore being processed, short component life, and a lifter /liner arrangement that had to be tailored to the particular circumstances at McLaughlin. IntroductionHomestake Mining Company's McLaughlin Mill, located in northern California, was designed to process a refractory gold ore at a rate of 3,000 tpd to render the ore amenable to cyanidation. Seven years transpired between discovery of the near-surface ore body in 1978 and the February, 1985 plant start-up. Development of the McLaughlin mill and open pit gold mine hinged on the use of autoclave technology to achieve design recoveries."

Humphreys Gold Corporation of Denver, Colo., was conducting a successful placer operation in 1936 on North Clear Creek about 6 miles below Blackhawk in Gilpin County, Colo. About 3,000 cubic yards of gold-bearing gravel are dug daily (September. 1936) by two draglines and a power shovel. The gravel is screened in a portable washing plant; the trommel oversize is discarded, and the undersize is pumped to a gold-saving plant. The gold is caught in riffles in sluice boxes. The total cost of mining is about 20 cents per cubic yard. The mine is in a narrow canyon at an altitude of 7,200 feet. The Blackhawk-Central City branch of the Colorado & Southern RR. runs over the property. Freight platforms for receiving supplies were moved as the workings advanced. The workmen reached the mine on a speeder that ran on the railroad tracks from a point on the automobile highway (U. S. 40) on Clear Creek near the bottom of Floyd Hill, about 5 miles distant. The mine is 36 miles by road and speeder, or 30 miles by rail, from Denver.

Water occupies a dual role in our industrial society. It is the indispensable raw material, essential to life itself. It is equally an industrial nuisance, interfering with the production of industrial minerals, making construction difficult, flooding valuable land, and generally producing problems because it is in the wrong place at the critical time. The legal position of water as a nuisance, and the counter measures to be taken, have been well established procedures for determining the responsibility for damage caused by water, and the organization of drainage districts and flood control and levee districts have been legally tested many times. Thus there is rather adequate legal doctrine concerning water, the common enemy. But recently efforts have been made to regularize the position of water as a useful, industrial, commodity. Such laws are not new to the West, where the doctrine of appropriation for beneficial use is slowly becoming the water law. Elsewhere the University of Michigan has produced a "model" water law and efforts are being made to induce all of the states to use this law, or a slight variation of it, as the basis for legislation. There are many serious criticisms of the proposed "model"-law, and the writer strongly opposes many of the provisions. But the fact remains that water is, in itself, so useful and essential that laws have been, and will be, passed to insure the orderly development of our water resources and to prevent waste. The, most important aspect of these "water-use" laws is that, wise or unwise, the existing laws and the proposed laws have been "water oriented". "Water oriented" means that it has been tacitly assumed that the beneficial use of water, either surface water or ground water, is the overriding consideration.

"Falls of ground still cause around one-third of all underground mining fatalities. The recent introduction of mechanised room and pillar working into Indian coalmines is an example of the application of new design by measurement and safety monitoring strategies, which can be used to reduce falls of ground risks in mines.Rock Mechanics Technology, now part of Golder Associates UK Ltd (Golder), is providing rock bolt support and pillar design services to the mines using a design by measurement approach. This involves in situ monitoring to confirm support and pillar designs and pillar extraction sequences.Site examples are given of the support designs determined and the monitoring programs undertaken for both design and safety.Routine safety monitoring of roof movement using telltales is also described. A new auto warning telltale has been developed specifically to warn of imminent caving as pillars are extracted.The approach used by Golder has played a major role in ensuring the success of these projects. As a consequence, mechanised room and pillar working is now firmly established in India, and wider application is planned to help meet future demand for coal.The experience confirms that the design by measurement method for this application has important advantages over conventional design approaches using analytical or empirical methods. Firstly, it measures the design performance or outcome rather than trying to calculate or predict it. Secondly, it provides the opportunity for the design to be adjusted to obtain the optimum outcome. Thirdly, it can do this at a local level, so that the support design can be matched to changing conditions to give the most cost-effective design. Finally, it incorporates long-term monitoring of support performance, again at a local level, so that subsequent change can be identified to enable corrective measures to be implemented in a timely manner and to ensure that ground control safety is maintained.CITATION:MacAndrew, K M, Garcia, A S, Gregson, I D and Gandhe, A, 2014. OF all the metals in the war program the demand for and the production of magnesium have increased percentagewise the most. In the prewar year 1939 the production was 3350 tons. The war program, twice expanded, now provides for nearly one hundred times that amount annually. The goal announced by the War Production Board in February 1942 was 362,500 tons per year. Be- cause of the development during the year of satisfactory types of incendiary bombs other than magnesium this objective has been somewhat reduced but the capacity of the plants already built or under construction will be huge. The Aluminum and Magnesium Division of the W.P.B. has had the responsibility of planning and implementing this expansion and of providing fabricating facilities as well for this greatly increased tonnage of magnesium ingot.
