The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted Cu exchange tests for six common clays under simulated in situ leaching conditions. Regression equations were obtained from the data expressing the Cu exchange capacity as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and temperature. Using these equations, an analysis was made of the impact each clay could have on overall Cu recovery. The results suggest that Ca and Na montmorillonite clays could have a major impact on Cu recovery and that attapulgite and illite clays could have a smaller, but still significant, impact. Kaolinite and ripidolite clays pose little threat to loss of Cu from in situ leaching solutions.

Rehabilitation of sites contaminated by oil products and chlorinated organic compounds is a costly task which affects the planning of urban and infrastructure development. An integrated approach based on the non-invasive geophysical technology is utilized for subsurface characterization of contaminated land. In this approach the localized information, provided by chemical analysis of soil samples collected from bore-holes, is used for the calibration of the geophysical data. This information is subsequently extrapolated to the area under investigation by combining it with the geophysical results, providing thus information about pollution accumulation, contaminants? flow and pollution sources. Two case studies are presented from sites contaminated by heavy metals (Venice, Italy) and oil products (Athens, Greece). Resistivity, electromagnetic and seismic methods were used in this approach. Namely, electrical tomography, electromagnetic mapping, ground penetrating radar (GPR), multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and seismic refraction experiments were conducted. In Italy, the sections from the multichannel analysis of surface waves imaged successfully a buried channel where the pollution is concentrated. Preliminary results are also discussed from the geophysical survey in Greece where the thickness of the oil phase located on top of the water layer is 60 cm.

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is twofold. Firstly, to drawn attention to recommendations which have been accepted by the International Atomic Energy Agency concerning radiometric reporting methods and calibration in uranium exploration, and secondly to emphasize the benefits that- will stem from adopting them. These recommendations are contained in an IAEA Technical Report, No. 174, which has been prepared with the intention of serving as a general guide to the subject. The existence of this specialized report is likely to be unknown to most of those who can benefit unless it is given some publicity by an organization such as the CIM. The recommendations were prepared by a small international committee consisting of Dr, P. H. Dodd , U.S .A. , Dr. R. L. Grasty. Canada, Dr. L. Levborg, Denmark, Dr. M. Matolin, Czechoslovakia , Dr. S. D. Simov, Bulgaria, and the writer.The fact that there are standard scientific units of mass, distance and time is taken for granted, It is also accepted that the type of instrumentation used to measure one of these parameters is irrelevant to the way the measurement is reported. Geophysical parameters such as magnetic field strength and gravity have generally accepted units, the gamma and milligal, which are defined in SI terms. These units are employed irrespective of the operating principle, or manufacturer or organization involved in the measurement."

WITH the object of adapting high-school vocational courses to the industrial needs of the community, a few high-school officials in West -Virginia working with the School of Mines of the State university decided to try an innovation this year. The purpose of this experiment was to teach coal mining in two high schools situated in mining communities. We thought that if a course in coal mining would be included in the list of optional courses offered in the high school, it might interest some of the boys, and if the course were properly taught it would undoubtedly be of inestimable value to those boys who later decided to take up mining work as their vocation. This coal-mining course was started last September in the Berwind and Gary high schools in West Virginia. The high-school officials in their conferences with' us decided that we should work up the outline of this course and they would assign the science teachers of the schools as instructors, with ,the understanding that we would help 'these instructors with this work. We consented to all this and submitted -an outline to the school officials which they are following this year.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 374 natural gas samples from 24 States and 5 foreign countries. These samples were collected during calendar year 1966 as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses of foreign samples contained in this publication represent the first samples received as a result of this expanded program. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eight previous publications have been made to present the results of 7,244 gas analyses made? by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1966. You and I can visit cement plants, inspect the various rotary kiln systems and find some equipment or some burning techniques that waste energy--fuel and power. After we have made such a visit and studied a few ideas, we could recommend ways to eliminate much of this waste. Probably every idea would cost money to bring into action. For our discussion, let us arbitrarily set an upper limit of $1,000,000 on the recommendations that we are allowed to make. Call these "low-cost" or "short-term" measures. They are improvements that do not require more than say, three months to complete; they do not require a major revision to the process. Other recommendations are "high-cost" or "long-term"; they are outside the scope of this discussion. Some of our "low-cost" recommendations would offer a satisfactory return on the money that they cost; the remainder would not. Now, is there some way that we can rather quickly pick out the "low-cost" measures that will show a satisfactory return and spend our time making these improvements first? Can we separate these items from those where the return is less likely to be good? I feel that we can pick some of these items quickly if we have a kiln system that has consistently non-uniform day-to-day operation. If the operation is uniform we probably cannot pick them quickly.

In the thermal treatment of electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts, zinc is reduced, volatilized, and ultimately recovered either as liquid metal in a splash condenser or as solid zinc oxide in bag filters. During the process, the duet's chlorine and fluorine content also enters the gas phase and condenses as dross in the splash condenser or as salts which contaminate the zinc oxide product. Pretreatment of EAF dust by pyrohydrolysis appeared to offer a means of minimizing the duet's halogen content. The primary research objectives were to experimentally verify the technical viability of pyrohydrolysis and delineate the process parameters requisite for efficient halogen removal. To this end, representative EAF duet samples were secured and characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Mössbauer analyses. Specific- experimentation focused on the response of halogen extraction to variations in temperature, retention time, water vapor partial pressure, and various additives. The experimental results proved that 97 to 99 percent chlorine extraction and 80 to 85 percent fluorine extraction are consistently achieved when EAF dusts are blended with silica and roasted at temperatures of 850°C or greater in a furnace atmosphere of 75% steam (diluted by air). A statistical analysis further established that more than- a single optimal point exists, thus affording flexibility in parameter selection (e.g., by increasing temperature, the necessary retention time and additive concentrations are decreased). The findings substantiate the feasibility of pyrohydrolysis roasting in reducing the chlorine and fluorine in the EAF dust to a level that will obviate industrial concerns about halogen contamination. The end-product of the pyrohydrolysis procedure is a de-halogenated, self-fluxing calcine which can be directly charged to a plasma or flame reactor. The paper includes design parameters and flow diagrams illustrating the pyrohydrolysis process integrated with the plasma and flame reactor technologies.

The accurate estimation of ore reserves along with capital and operating costs are two key components to the successful outcome of any feasibility study. In recent years, there have been many project failures caused by improper estimation of ore reserves. The accurate estimation of ore reserves for any deposit relies heavily on understanding its geology and underlying assumptions unique to the estimation techniques being used. The assumptions unique to commonly used traditional and geostatistical reserve estimation technique will be reviewed. The shortcomings of the estimation techniques and their possible impact on a given project's economic outcome will be discussed. The latest developments in geostatistics in overcoming existing reserve estimation problems will be presented.

THE object of this investigation was to make a comprehensive study of the degassing of molybdenum in order to determine how rigorous a treatment was necessary to completely remove sorbed gases from molybdenum electrodes in vacuum tubes. Some work has also been done with tungsten, nickel, iron and carbon. As a logical development of this work it has been shown that the gas is present throughout the body of the metal and a study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in molybdenum and tungsten and the rate of diffusion of nitrogen through molybdenum has been calculated. Tests were made on molybdenum from all the commercial sources and no difference was discovered in the nature of the gases present, the amounts or the ease of removal. The reason for this was apparent when a study was made of the manner in which gases are absorbed by gas-free molybdenum. It is necessary to heat molybdenum to 1760°C.oin a vacuum of the order of 0.001 micron for a time which varies lineally with the thickness, in order to obtain a condition in which no further gas is evolved by the sample. A sample so degassed can be handled and subsequently assembled in a tube and then degassed readily. The gases obtained from molybdenum are carbon monoxide and nitrogen, the nitrogen being the more difficult to remove. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE The apparatus is shown in Figs. I and 2. It consisted of two units, a degassing system and an analytical system. Each had a bake-out oven, as shown surrounding the systems in the sketches. The system will be traced, starting from the sample in the degassing system. A water-cooled quartz chamber surrounded the sample. The high-frequency coil, which heated the sample, extended only around this chamber and was cooled by an air blast. High-frequency power of 0800-meter wave length was obtained from a self-rectifying oscillator circuit with a maximum power input of 20 kw. A graded seal connected the quartz to the rest of the apparatus, which was of hard' glass. The temperature of the molybdenum sample was observed by an optical pyrometer through an optical window about 40 cm. distant from the sample. Since the object viewed under these conditions was not 'a black body, true temperature was not observed, but the so-called "brightness temperature." The correction of this to true temperature is discussed in a later section. IT is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds ;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established.23 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2 : I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. SYNOPSIS OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTS The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microorganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resins may serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium. some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17, 32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. "Electron spin resonance (ESRJ and cytotoxicity measurements were made on newly fractured silica to examine specifically the role of the fracture-induced, silicon-based radicals (Si· and SiO·) and silica-generated hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in the mechanism of the cell membrane damage by silica. The concentration of the Si· and SiO · radicals was controlled through decay processes, thermal annealing, and boiling, while that of the ·OH radicals was varied by using catalase, superoxide dismutase, KMnO, Na;iSeO:y ascorbic acid, and metal ions, and monitored via ESR spectroscopy. The dust's cytotoxicity potential was evaluated by measuring the silica-induced hemolysis and also by determining lipid peroxidation (using linoleic acid). From the comparison of hemolysis and ESR results it is deduced that the radicals play little or no role in the silica-induced hemolysis. However, the lipid peroxidation data indicate that the radicals might be involved in the initiation of an oxidative chain reaction leading to the macrophage membrane damage through lipid peroxidation. INTRODUCTIONThe biochemical mechanism of quartz-related pneumoconiosis is still not fully understood. It is believed, nevertheless, that one event of primary importance is the perturbation of cell membranes by the dust particles (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Shi et al., 1989; Summerton et al., 1977). The ensuing cell: membrane damage unleashes certain lytic enzymes resulting in additional cell injury and eventual fibrosis (Nolan et al., 1981; Summerton et al., 1977). Thus considerable effort is currently being made toward the understanding of the processes by which quartz particles disrupt the membrane of a red blood cell (RBC) or a pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM). A simple but important method of evaluating the membrane damage potential of a dust is the hemolysis test (Harington et al., 1971). Even though this test is used routinely for screening dusts for their cytotoxicity potential, the biochemical mechanisms underlying the cell lysis by many dusts, including quartz, is still controversial (Kilroe-Smith, 1974; Singh and Rahman, 1987), and this provided us the impetus for the present undertaking."

Brown and Yant6/ recently described a microprojection method for determining the particle-size distribution and number concentration of samples of dust collected from the air by such samplers as the Owens jet dust counter7/ and the thermal precipitator8/. This method was developed to obviate or reduce the eyestrain consequent to the regular filar-micrometer method9/ and to save time and work. The article stated that work was in progress on a microprojection method for courting impinger dust samples; this article describes the method developed. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The assistance of the personnel of the Ventilation Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Butte, Mont., in developing this method and particularly in suggesting a suitable material to use for the microprojector screen is sincerely appreciated. This report describes investigations of the economic merits of multiple zone mining and beneficiation versus selective mining of altered Western phosphate rock. The same deposit was considered in both instances and it was assumed that the grade of selectively mined ore was comparable to the grade of the concentrate from beneficiation. The beneficiating scheme used for the investigation was one proved by small continuous circuit operation. All economic factors were found to favor multiple zone mining plus beneficiation. Capital requirements and production costs were lower, and production life of the deposit was extended 4.5 times. The concentrate from beneficiation would be a uniform high-quality feed for acidulation and would be low in stable metallic oxide (R203) content. Such a feed would permit improved plant operating control, and the low R203 would promote more rapid filtration and minimize sludge formation in the phosphoric acid. With the proposed treatment, the concentrate produced by flotation from this deposit would cost about 1.5 times as much per ton as the concentrate produced by classification sizing. Therefore, inclusion of a flotation step in treatment schemes requires an economic analysis for each ore deposit.

The Sepon process plant utilises an autoclave to oxidize a flotation concentrate containing pyrite, residual copper minerals, and sulphur. The concentrate is produced from the residue of a preceding atmospheric copper leaching circuit. The function of the autoclave is to provide iron and acid for that atmospheric copper leaching circuit. The key issues in the operation of the autoclave are to maximise the production of acid and ferric ions and to avoid scaling issues related to sulphur balling in the autoclave. Scale control in the autoclave was examined using various dispersants and residue recycle without success. Operation of the autoclave at high temperature and high acidity addressed the scale issue through rapid oxidation of the sulphur and produced a ferric sulphate precipitate in the residue that could be re-leached to provide ferric iron. This paper presents the development steps followed, through batch and continuous piloting that resulted in an autoclave circuit design that addressed the above process requirements. Following definition of the process design basis, modelling of the autoclave operation was carried out to assist with engineering design. The model included thermodynamics and kinetics of oxidation of pyrite, elemental sulphur and covellite and also considered gas/liquid mixing, oxygen solubility as a function of temperature and solution composition, ferrous to ferric oxidation, gangue reactions with acid and precipitation/re-dissolution of basic ferric sulphate and alunite.

The Australian coal industry has undergone sevenfold growth over the last 30 years and since 1985 has been the world's largest coal exporter. Three quarters of Australia's coal production is exported so its future is dependent on it remaining internationally competitive with other energy sources and other coal exporting countries. Coal is likely to increase its share of the energy market during the nine- ties as oil prices increase, new coal-fired capacity is commissioned and some form of nuclear energy is developed which is of acceptable safety standards to the community for use in the 21st century. Gas may take a part of coal's anticipated market share by the Year 2000. While coal exports will increase from China, Colombia, Indonesia and Venezuela and satisfy some of this additional coal demand Australia will also expand its export production, due to its existing advantages. The United States, Canada, South Africa, Poland and USSR seem unlikely to enjoy the same degrees of expansion and some, particularly Poland and USSR, will decline. Australia will always find it difficult to compete in the more distant markets due to levels of ocean freight, although its high quality coals will tend to partly offset such disadvantage.

Many mining engineering graduates enter the mining industry lacking training in mine emergency management. As a result, mining universities in the United Sates and other countries are beginning to form volunteer student mine rescue teams to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and give them hands-on experience managing potential emergency scenarios underground. In the early 1980s, the Missouri University of Science and Technology developed the first collegiate mine rescue team in the United States. For approximately 30 years, it was the only successful collegiate team until the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) started its program in 2009. Currently, there are at least five collegiate teams in the United States and one in Canada. At the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology in Germany, the goal is to adapt the Colorado School of Mines Mine Rescue Program to develop a collegiate team of its own. Currently, mining engineering students cover the theoretical basics of mine rescue in an occupational health and safety lecture and take a basic, one-day mine rescue training course at the Central Mine Rescue Station in Leipzig. The course covers the basic mine rescue topics and gives students the opportunity to experience working in elevated heat and smoke conditions while wearing breathing apparatus. This training gives students a small insight into the importance of mine rescue and mine emergency management. Collegiate mine rescue teaches students the importance of mine rescue and mine safety by giving them hands-on learning experiences before entering the mining industry.

In the latter half of 1948 the Bureau of Mines investigated the Magnet Cove Rutile Co.'s prerty in northern Hot Spring County, Ark. This work was supplemental to the work done by the Bureau on the same property in 1945.2/ It was undertaken for the purpose of investigating the extent of the ore body toward the south and west and at depth and to obtain representative samples of the ore for metallurgical tests. For the latter purpose, the samples were so taken as to minimize alteration of the physical characteristics of the ore, these characteristics being determining factors in working out processes of bencficiation. During the investigation, 27 holes were drilled, 10 with a diamond-coro drill end 17 with churn-drill rigs using a Baker standard cable-tool core barrel. Drilling developed an extension of the ore deposit westward from the previously mined area but did not disclose the full depth of mineralization. Metallurgical tests to determine methods of beneficiating the ore and utilizing the resultant products are now in progress.

This p aver is the second of a series recording the results of tests made at various quarries throughout the United States to determine, (1) the relation between the size gradation of feed to, and product from, primary crushers; (2) the particle shape of crushed product; (3) the differences in gradation and particle shape produced by different types of primary crushers; and (4) the differences in gradation and particle shape caused by crushing different kinds of stone. Primary crushing has received comparatively little attention in the technical literature in spite of the fact that the design of the whole crushing plant should be correlated to the performance of the primary crusher.

In 2006, a total of 2,113 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Coal mines comprised 14.2% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.5% (n=1,955) and anthracite mines 7.5% (n=158) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 71.0% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.2%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.3%).
