Fume events in coalmines are typically associated with wet conditions, soft ground and deep holes. An ACARP research project used laboratory and field testing combined with literature reviews, numerical models and field investigations to characterise the influence of these conditions on the propensity for fume. This paper highlights the results for soft ground and wet conditions and proposes a proactive fume mitigation methodology. A simple numerical model is used to show how fume arises in soft rock that yields more under the loading of high-pressure, water-resistant explosive blends than for ANFO. The blends cool more rapidly after detonation into the lower temperature zone favourable for NO2 production. Low-pressure, high detonation temperature explosives are loaded or charged into soft ground. Water resistance must be considered because soft, faulted and fractured ground can lead to fume from degradation by water flow and non-ideal detonation of product in cracks.A suite of tests were developed to quantify ANFO and emulsion blend performance over time that can be carried out in a mobile laboratory on-site. Index tests such as viscosity measurement and water resistance in beakers are proposed to quantify long-term product performance because small components, such as surfactant, prill impurities and prill fines, contribute to inconsistent product performance. Water ingress experiments and detonation tests aligned with field investigations identified and characterised the role of groundwater in damaging ANFO and causing fume.Fume risk management is achieved using a proposed proactive fume mitigation methodology to characterise influences such as seasonal rain variation, groundwater flow hydrogeology, rock mass strength and structure well ahead of blast design. This report is the 20th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations; it is the second4/ to be issued on a calendar-year basis. Previous reports related largely to publications by Bureau authors during the reporting period. This one discusses the publications issued during 1955 and in addition describes briefly the work in progress during the year. Further details on the published work may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. The Bureau continues to direct its research and technologic work on coal toward safer and more efficient mining, improved preparation, and more effective utilization, with the ultimate twin goals of promoting conservation and insuring that coal will make its maximum contribution to the Nation's industrial capacity. Significant advances toward these goals were made in 1955.

The Government of New South Wales has granted approval for Hunter Valley Aluminium Pty., Ltd" and Alcan Australia Ltd. to proceed with the building of an aluminum smelter at Lochinvar and the expansion of a smelter at Kurri Kurri. Construction of the smelters is expected to start as soon as the consortium is finalized in early 1982. The smelters are part of a plan to increase Australia's aluminum capacity fivefold to 1.5 million tons by the mid-1980's. CHILE Construction of a $61 million lithium carbonate plant in northern Chile will be started in early 1983 by Sociedad Chilena del Litio Ltdao Production is scheduled to begin in 1984 with an initial capacity of 6,350 tons of lithium carbonate produced from a brine deposit. The firm is owned 55% by Foote Mineral Company, of Exton, Pennsylvania, and 45% by Corporacion de Fomento de la Produccion-CORFO.

This paper compares an integrated evaluation approach to decision-making with more traditional sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. The primary objective is to highlight the differences in NPV that can arise from using these evaluation methods in a top down and bottom-up approach. Results from three resource scenarios, derived from sampling a "virtual" ore body (reality) on grid spacings of 75m, 50m and 25m, are analyzed and compared.

Wall control at the Pipe Open Pit is of primary importance in ensuring the long-term stability of the operation, while keeping costs to a minimum. Blasting techniques have been adapted to the variations in competence and structure of the wall rocks. A portion of the perimeter wall is being developed in incompetent peridotite . A recent change in pit slope design provides a wide safety berm on alternate benches. A support program which consists of pinning the crests of wide berms with vertical reinforced concrete dowels and horizontal bolting of walls shows evidence of increasing the stability of the pit walls. This paper describes the blasting and support techniques which are contributing to successful wall control in the Pipe operation.

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) from mine wastes is one of the most environmental challenge currently facing the mining industry. AMD is the result of the natural oxidation of sulphides exposed to air and water. When mining wastes have the potential to produce AMD, these reactive wastes have to be managed to meet existing environmental regulations. The LTA site (property of Barrick Gold Corp.) contains sulphide tailings that have the potential to generate AMD. The closure option Barrick selected was to construct a multilayered cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE). The main objective of this CCBE is to prevent the production of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) from the tailings stack covering an area of approximately 60 ha. Since its construction in 1996, the cover has been monitored to evaluate its performance. Two of the measured parameters are volumetric water content and matrix suction. This paper presents some of the main results from the monitoring program that started seven years ago. The results show that the cover is largely able to maintain a high degree of saturation (greater than 85%) in the moisture-retaining layer. The actual performance of the CCBE on the flat surface of the 60 ha site is even better than expected at the design stage. The area that requires more specific attention with the LTA cover is the influence of slopes that can reduce the performance of the CCBE during dry periods. However, these effects seems to be local and do not significantly affect the overall performance of the CCBE to mitigate the production of AMD at the LTA site.

Field studies have demonstrated the relationship between the growth of high-value trees on surface mined land and the physical conditions of the root growth medium. Specifically, the survival and height of hardwoods grown on less compacted material are far superior to those grown on compacted material. Furthermore, studies have demonstrated that the physical condition of the root growth medium can be characterized by dry bulk density and penetrometer resistance and that these parameters are also related to tree growth measurements. Site indices are useful for evaluating and predicting the productivity and timber yield for a specific location. A method has been proposed to estimate the site indices for various tree species on reclaimed surface mined land as a function of the physical properties of the root growth medium.

The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery-powered ac systems and diesel-fired heaters, going noidle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, standalone mobile equipment HVAC.The history of GHGs and climate changeIn 1896, Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960s, Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Fig.1).In 1988, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgment of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of more than 2,500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries. Because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998, requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5 percent from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States). In 2002, the Bush administration announced a policy for climate change relying on domestic, voluntary actions to reduce the "greenhouse gas intensity" of the United States economy by 18 percent by 2012. The U.S. still attends the Kyoto conference of parties (COPs) but does not participate in negotiations, as it is not bound by its terms."

An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between silica plate and glass sphere in sodium oleate solutions. Hydrophobic forces were observed when the two surfaces were activated by CaOH+ or MgOH+ ions. The force measurements conducted in the absence of the surfactant showed that the activated silica surfaces do not exhibit the primary hydration forces that have been observed between unactivated surfaces. The activation mechanism was studied by calculating the contributions from electrostatic and chemical interactions to the total free energy change. The results suggest that the adsorption of the hydroxo-complexes is controlled mainly by the lateral interactions between the adsorbed species on the silica surface.

Blasting related indices were developed to quantify variation in rock strength and structure for each stope, and for each lift of each stope, as part of a Mine to Mill study at an underground open stope mine. The indices were derived from combinations of data from underground diamond drilling because the simplifying assumptions contained in the block model prevented sufficient differentiation in rock mass characteristics to enable adjustments to the blast design.Application of combinations of blasting related indices enabled the identification of stopes with a high potential for inconsistent and oversize fragmentation, underbreak and overbreak. The indices also fragmentation outcomes to deliver increased material flow within stopes, better digability and predict indicative mill throughput. The stopes with issuesCalibration of the results enabled adjustments to the blast design based on the rock mass conditions and accordingly improved the blast outcomes. This enabled improved productivity by reducing underbreak and overbreak, having a more appropriate fragmentation, which reduces unplanned rock handling and improves bogging. The reduction in recovery drilling creates huge opportunities to improve output by reducing production delays and decreasing the overall cost per tonne. By understanding the explosive performance and blast energy distribution in relation to rock mass blastability poor, performing designs in blind upholes and convex stopes were identified.The conclusion of the work is that value improvement, regarding increased revenue and reduced costs, can be achieved across the whole underground Mine to Mill process chain by developing stope based indices from the existing geological information to correctly tailor the blast design to the rock within, and surrounding, the stope.CITATION:Jackson, J and Sellers, E, 2017. Five lignites from the northern Great Plains province were carbonized at temperatures from 500° to 1,000° C in a bench-scale unit. A replicated Greco-Latin square experimental design was employed to allow testing of four independent variables at five levels. Independent variables investigated were temperature, source of lignite (mine), weight of charge, and moisture content of charge. Dependent variables were char yield, tar yield, light-oil yield, tar plus light-oil yield, carbonization gas yield, and carbonization gas heat yield. An analysis of variance indicated that, at the 99-percent confidence level, the independent variables of carbonization temperature, source of lignite, and weight of charge were significant for yields of char, tar plus light oil, and carbonization gas, whereas moisture content was only significant for carbonization gas yields. At the 95-percent confidence level, moisture content significantly influenced the carbonization gas heat yield per pound of lignite charge and the yields of dry tar plus light oil. All dependent variables were determined on a moisture- and ash-free basis. Multiple regression equations for predicting seven different factors of carbonization yields as functions of carbonization temperature and initial composition were developed using computer techniques. Equations for yields of char, tar plus light oil, and carbonization gas were compared with equations previously developed by others at the 500° C level.

Due to the immense volumes of municipal wastes that are generated in this nation every year, it has become imperative that effective measures be developed to utilize all or portions of these materials in a productive and efficient manner. Nany larger municipalities employ incineration to reduce the bulk of material to be removed to disposal sites: but, even after incineration, approximately one-fourth of the original waste material in the form of non-combustible residue and flyash remain. It has been found that the flyash fraction of the incinerator residue contains varying amounts of copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron and titanium along with many other important metals. The serious loss of these natural resources contained within the flyash and the monetary expense of current disposal methods present a serious and rapidly increasing problem to the public and to the Federal Government. The growing emphasis upon environmental control, rapidly increasing urban population and "convenience packaging" 'with its attendant increased waste production has led to the initiation of a broad range of studies concerning municipal waste. For example, the U. S. Bureau of I-lines is investigating all aspects of the incineration of municipal waste under its solid waste disposal program.l "In-house" studies range from improved incinerator design to potential recovery and recycling of the various components within the incinerator residue. A major portion of the latter research is being performed at the U. S. Bureau of ;-lines, College Park, Maryland facility while grants for specific areas of study have been issued to several universities and research institutes. In addition, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has supported programs examining the potential recovery of paper; glass, metals and other components of unincinerated refuse followed by disposal in sanitary landfills.

This report describes an experimental method for determining parameters for the rate of reaction of CO2 with solid carbon. The method involves the simulation of a flow reactor by a mathematical model based on a hypothetical multistage reactor which permits calculation of the analyses of effluent gas and carbon consumed as functions of the flow rate and duration of the reaction. The method is applied to experimental data on the reaction of coke with CO2 in fluidized-bed and fixed-bed flow reactors. A method is described whereby two parameters may be determined simultaneously. The method involves a reiterative procedure that finds the values of the parameters that minimize the sum of squares of deviation between calculated and observed analyses of the effluent gas.

The Mt Morgan Minesite in Central Queensland has been subject to both underground and surface gold mining operations since the late-1800s. The site is largely unrehabilitated and poor quality surface run-off and subsurface leachate is contaminating the nearby Dee River. The site is dominated by a large open cut, which now stores contaminated surface and subsurface run-off. Three models were used to simulate the complex hydrologic processes occurring at the Mt Morgan Mine: a rainfall-run-off model, a groundwater model and a storage behavioural model. Study results showed that the open cut is filling with water and will soon spill large volumes of highly polluted water to the Dee River on a regular basis if no remedial action is taken. This will result in a three-fold increase in pollutant load to the Dee River. Based on a consideration of water quality and quantity it was concluded that the first priority for future minesite water management should be the prevention of spills from the open cut. Potential management options to achieve this objective included surface rehabilitation, catchment diversions, modification of the pump-back system and controlled releases to the Dee River during floods. However, assessing the relative effectiveness of these measures required a thorough understanding of the complex surface and subsurface hydrology of the site. The results of a 100 year simulation of hydrologic processes revealed that previously favoured management options would be ineffective in preventing spills to the river. On this basis, a continuous treat and release strategy was proposed as the only reliable method of preventing future spills. The results of this study demonstrate that good environmental management decisions must be based on an understanding of the relevant physical processes and consideration of cumulative effects over an appropriate time scale.

Laboratory permeability measurements at elevated pressure and at temperatures ranging from 20º to 150°C have been conducted on samples of Ironton-Galesville sandstone. The purpose of this testing was to identify and characterize important physicochemical processes occurring in association with the injection and withdrawal of heated ground water at the U.S. Department of Energy's Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) field site in St. Paul, Minnesota. Results indicate that permeability decreased significantly as temperature was increased and that dissolution of the dolomite and silicate cementing agents and accompanying changes in mechanical properties may occur in the heat storage aquifer at St. Paul. Further, loss of permeability with temperature in laboratory samples may be caused by the change in the mechanical structure of the sample. Tests at ambient temperature to evaluate the effect of particle migration under conditions of reversed flow indicate that this process will not significantly impair formation permeability at the St. Paul site.

Until recently SX-EW technology has only been used to produce conventional cathode for the cyclical commodity marketplace. Unlike electrorefining, SX-EW lends itself to the integration with the downstream manufacturing technologies for direct mine site production of value added products. The integration of SX-EW and downstream manufacturing results in the elimination of redundant process steps, the cost savings, and the access to value added product markets which can buffer the producer from swings in the cathode market. SX-EW production of copper powder and powder-based products has been demonstrated at the pilot plant level. The SX-EW process has been successfully redesigned to meet the more specific demands of engineered products. Challenges include the solution purity, the cell ventilation, the high current density operation and the product handling. Successful demonstration of mine site production of value added SX- EW products opens up new non-commodity marketplaces to the mining industry.

Most of the production of copper in the United States comes from a few large companies. Often overlooked, however, are the more numerous small mining operations, which collectively produce a significant portion of the nation's copper. The objective of this paper is to describe the operations of a small mining company - Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation - how it views its place in this industry of giants, how it exploits the advantages offered by its relatively small size, and how it protects itself from the hazards being small introduces. Environment is, of course, a critical factor for such a company because it does not have the resources which help large companies weather periods of financial stress. Ideally, this environment is characterized by a heal thy economy, strong product demand, relatively stable prices , adequate grades and tonnages of ore commensurate with depth and over-burden, ready access to utilities, a dependable labor pool, and suitable technical "know how". When the environment is right, properties which were previously uneconomical to operate attract the attention of companies whose primary interest is a return on investment commensurate with risk over a reasonable period of time. Naturally, the amount of the investment and the duration of operation determines the size of the company which would be interested in such a venture. Such is the case with Ranchers Bluebird Mine at Miami, Arizona - a small property operated by a small company in a favorable economic environment.

Structural and topographic relief in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico provides a remarkable cross section through the recently recognized 23-26 m.y.-old Questa caldera and cogenetic volcanic and plutonic rocks. Although largely eroded, remnants of an ash-flow sheet of silicic-alkalic rhyolite and associated more mafic lavas of the Latir volcanic field are preserved as far as 45 km beyond the source caldera. Within the caldera, the tuff ponded to a thickness of 2-3 km and enclosed chaotic megabreccia fragments which slumped from the caldera walls. At the time of ash-flow eruption, the volcanic field was severely deformed along northwest-trending faults related to the Miocene Rio Grande rift, with most intense deformation occurring within the caldera. Strata were steeply tilted and locally overturned along presumably listric faults. Ash- flow tuffs locally underwent secondary flowage over concurrently developing fault scarps and accumulated within structural basins as rheoignimbritic lava flows. Cogenetic batholithic granitic rocks, exposed over an area of 20 x 35 km, range from mesozonal quartz monzonite to epizonal porphyritic granite and aplite, with the shallower and more silicic phases most abundant within the caldera. Compositionally and texturally distinct granitic phases define a highly evolved resurgent intrusion within the caldera, an incomplete ring dike along its southern margin, and a large mass of less fractionated quartz monzonite south of the caldera. A negative Bouguer gravity anomaly is closely confined to the area of ex- posed granitic rocks; it also reflects boundaries of the Questa caldera. The gravity anomaly is interpreted as defining the extent of the underlying batholith, emplaced into lower parts of the volcanic sequence and underlying Precambrian rocks. Paleomagnetic determinations indicate that the granitic rocks were above Curie temperatures at the time of caldera formation and regional listric faulting, yet most are little different in radiometric age from the intensely deformed volcanic rocks. These relations indicate that the batholithic complex represents the source magma body for the volcanic rocks, into which the Questa caldera collapsed, and was largely liquid at the time of regional tectonic disruption. Compositions of the volcanic and plutonic phases changed from early calc-alkaline metaluminous rocks, to weakly peralkaline silicic rhyolite and equivalent afredsonite-acmite granite at the time of the caldera formation, then back to post- caldera calc-riebeckite granitic rocks. Maximum concentrations of alkalis and minor elements such as Rb, Th, U, Nb, Zr, and Y were reached at the time the caldera formed about 25-26 m.y. ago, but the major molybdenum mineralization of the Questa district took place when the late calc-alkaline granitic ring intrusions were emplaced about 23 m.y. ago, along the south margin of the caldera.

The deep sea hydrothermal deposits are one of the most prospecting resources, and various works to develop these mines are now underway. There are also various methods for the pre-site survey of the mines: acoustic survey, electro-magnetic survey, and others. However, as a precise method at the final survey, drilling/coring is indispensable to confirm the three-dimensional distribution and to grasp the dignity of the ores for the final decision of industrialization. This drilling/coring at the final survey is done at many points with distance of 15~25m between each point for on-land deposits. This means that 1km by 1km square area requires (1,000m/25m)2 ~ (1,000m/15m)2 = 1,600 ~ 4,500 holes. The drilling/coring depths will be around 30m or more for the hydrothermal deposits. This depth seems very shallow, but because the stratum is very brittle and is very difficult to core, the average core recovery ratio is around 50%, and 0% core recovery happens very often. Thus, the indispensable work of coring for grasping the dignity of ores is a very difficult work although the coring depth is shallow, and also the required number of holes is enormous. Conventional drilling/coring method on the ocean is to use drillship. However, the cost is very huge. Recently a new technique has come out which is to use remotely controlled drilling machine on seafloor. This machine seems to have a very good performance. However, it is reported that the available inclination of the seafloor where the machine sits on must be less than 15 degrees. The sea floor inclinations of active hydrothermal vents area are usually very steep and slopes of 45 degrees or more are prevailing and it seems very hard to carry out drilling/coring for the machine at these steep slopes, although it is impossible to mine the ore at these areas because the temperature is too high to work there. The inclination of the sea floor at the dead or paused hydrothermal vents area where ore recovery is possible may be not so steep, and the machine may work well. However, the required number of holes is still a very heavy burden. In order to solve these problems, the author proposes a new concept of drilling/coring system operated from a conventional research ship. This concept is still a desk plan, but the author wants to realize this system at any means.

"The history of Duluth commences with Daniel de Greysolon du Lhut, one of the explorers of the Upper Mississippi who came to the head of the lakes in the summer of 1679. Radisson and Groseillier, and Claude Allouez, a Jesuit priest, are supposed to have visited the head of the lakes, -but there is no authentic record previous to that of du Lhut.In 1792, the fur traders established a fort at Fond du Lac, fifteen miles up the St. Louis River from Lake Superior, but within the limits of the present city •of Duluth. In the early 50's, there were a few scattering settlers at Oneota and around the George Stuntz trading post on Minnesota point. In 1855-6, the settlement on Minnesota point was called Duluth, commemorating the name du Lhut, and organized as a town in 1857. The first board of trustees and town council consisted of -William Nettleton, J. B. Culver; Robert E. Jefferson, Grin W. Rice and William Old: In 1870, the city of Duluth was incorporated, and five years later a portion of the same territory was incorporated as the village of Duluth, and the two municipal corporations were still in existence on March 1, 1887, when the city and the village of Duluth were incorporated as the present city.The first saw mill in Duluth was erected in 1856-57, on the present site of the ship canal. It cut logs from a virgin forest at the upper end of Minnesota point.The first railroad was built to the head of the lakes in 1870. The charter for this road had been granted in 1861 to the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad Company, afterward called the St. Paul and Duluth, and which is now a part of the Northern Pacific Railroad."
