There are certain site-specific geological and physical features of a rock mass which control its behavior under the dynamic stresses induced by the action of explosives. It is essential that blasting technology be adapted specifically to those features. There does not exist a single, simple "right" way for each type of blasting operation, but rather each operation must be custom-designed for each site. When this is done, it is often possible to produce unusual but highly desirable end resglts, such as undisturbed narrow rock walls, monoliths and square benches. Although the techniques illustrated here were developed specifically for "sculpture blasting", the geomechanics principles would apply to other types of blasting control, both large-scale and small-scale. Because the techniques are designed more for the purpose of modifying the site responses which would ordinarily be expected than they are to developing new "blasting formulae?, the name "Modified Site Response Blasting" will be used.

Pressure relief is an important step in preventing and controlling rock burst disasters. Hydraulic slotting has emerged as a strategy for pressure relief and energy release in roadway surrounding rock. There is no qualitative description for the response relationship between hydraulic slotting parameters and the degree of pressure and energy release in a roadway, which is a scientific problem. In this paper, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and on-site industrial practice were comprehensively used. First, a structural model for the pressure relief and energy release of coal by hydraulic slotting in a deep roadway was established, and the pressure relief and energy release principle by hydraulic slotting was revealed. The principles and methods for determining hydraulic slotting parameters in the roadway were proposed. Three evaluation indices for the pressure relief and energy release effect of coal after hydraulic slotting were proposed, namely, the stress ratio of coal, elastic energy density ratio of coal, and displacement rate of the roadway rib. According to the evaluation indices, the degree of pressure relief and energy release was divided into three levels: reverse pressurization, full pressure relief, and transitional pressure relief. Then, a FLAC3D numerical model was constructed, the levels of pressure relief and energy release under different hydraulic slotting parameters were analyzed, and the optimal slotting parameters were determined. Finally, on-site industrial practices were carried out in Panel 7312 of the Xinhe Coal Mine. An effect test showed that the effect of pressure relief and energy release was remarkable after hydraulic slotting was adopted on the roadway surrounding rock, which can effectively reduce the risk of rock bursts. These research results can further improve hydraulic slotting technology systems and provide a theoretical basis and technical reference for the stability control of deep roadway surrounding rock.

These models can be used with variations in explosive type and diameter, along with borehole diameter. All models have been validated with test data and shown to have minimal error.

"During the summer of 1968, the author was employed in the Research Department of Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited, Hamilton, Ontario. Over the years, Dofasco has been conducting a program for developing more efficient control of its basic oxygen steelmaking process. The author was thus able to obtain a variety of viewpoints from both research engineers and furnace operators. He also had access to extensive literature dealing with BOF control schemes underway at other major steel producers. This paper describes the present state of developments in BOF steelmaking control.The necessity for efficient BOF control is pointed out. To appreciate the variables to be controlled, a brief outline of process fundamentals is included. Technical aspects of present methods of practical control are examined in detail; the relative merits of dynamic over static control models are emphasized. Finally, it is shown how an effective dymic-optimizing control scheme serves as the basis for closed-loop computer control of the process."

Slope failures very commonly occur during a long period of heavy rainfall and groundwater rise. The failures pose a substantial risk to people, infrastructure, and equipment downslope. In the recent past, the mining industry has faced an increase in tailings dam failure due to several reasons including pore pressure increases in the dams. Many failures have been observed to occur during times of water level fluctuations but the critical factors that influence the initiation of slope failures still need to be adequately clarified. To investigate these factors, laboratory experiments were conducted on model sandy slopes to determine pore pressure-induced slope failure initiation. This study also presents a method to examine water seepage through soil slopes using an ultraviolet (UV) dye and a UV flashlight. The small-scale model test simulation demonstrated failures induced by either water percolation from the upslope tank at a constant level or by raising the water level at intervals. A bottom chamber fully filled with water to replicate groundwater rise was also simulated. The soil slope was monitored at every stage to study the deformations and behavior until failure occurred. Results gathered from the controlled laboratory conditions were useful for the verification of the numerical modeling method created in the computer program Slide. The analysis showed that slope failure always occurred when the toe was fully saturated. High pore pressures and seepage forces reduce the shear force at the toe to almost zero causing it to slide. A comparison of slope height to water level also indicated an average of 96% water level to cause a failure. At this point, the soil slope is fully saturated and has no matric suction. The findings in this study show that, by monitoring the moisture content of slopes, failures can be predicted.

"IntroductionTHE PINCHER CREEK gas condensate field, in Township 3, Range 28, and Townships 3 and 4, Range 29, West of the Fourth Meridian, was discovered in 1947 by the Canadian Gulf Oil Company with the completion of Pincher Creek No. 1 well in the Madison lime-stone of Mississippian age.This discovery was the result of a great deal of detailed seismic work in the area and is a credit to the geophysical personnel of the Company. The depth of the reservoir varies from 7,400 feet to 8,200 feet subsea, with the established water level at -8,200 feet. The predicted depth was but a scant 100 feet from that found in the discovery well, at 11, 705 feet. Since the discovery of the reservoir, three additional wells have penetrated the Madison limestone and have further verified the original •seismic interpretation of the limits of this reservoir.To date, •only a very small amount of gas has been produced from this field. Consequently, the reservoir studies that have been made so far are predominantly based on investigations of the phase behaviour of the fluid and physical characteristics of the reservoir rock. In view of the above limitations, it has been necessary to set up and perform model reservoir studies with the fluids and to recover as much core from the productive Madison limestone as possible in order that it might be analysed by conventional laboratory technique and be subjected to detailed microscopic geological examination."

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 73,010 acres of the 76,480-acre Lower Owyhee Canyon Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-110) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is in Malheur County, OR, about 8 miles north of Rome. There are approximately 7.7 million tons of subeconomic zeolite (heulandite and/or clinoptilolite) resources with ammonia ion exchange capacities as high as 1.75 milliequivalents per gram in the Chalk Basin-Lambert Rocks area. The bed is 25 ft thick with less than 100 feet of overburden. This resource probably will not be mined in the foreseeable future.

Several water treatment options have been studied and piloted. A process based on activity of sulphate reducing bacteria combines sulphate removal and heavy metal removal in one process step. The anaerobic bacteria reduce the sulphate to sulphide and consequently metal sulphides will precipitate. The final design for the commercial scale plant is described.

"Crucial to the implementation of new computer-based information systems at Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited was a data communications network that would take computing power to the various mine and plant sites. Falconbridge required a capability to provide on-line data entry, inquiry, and reporting capabilities in three geographical areas, six mines, two mills, a smelter, approximately fifty shops, seven warehouses and numerous administrative offices throughout the Sudbury basin.Conventional cabling methods were rejected based on the projected cost of installation of necessary cables; lack of flexibility to meet the changing requirements of the mine environment; and the risk of losing service to an entire area depending on solitary communication lines.Instead, Falconbridge selected and installed a Data Carrier System (DCS) and Packet Switching Communication System from Teltone Limited, Markham, Ontario. This combined system ""piggy-backs"" computer data over voice-grade twisted pair wire, bringing data to the associated PBX equipment. From there data packets are assembled and routed to the central computer site where they are disassembled for entry into the host machine.Falconbridge has been successful in using existing technology to solve communications problems in a difficult environment. Plans for the future of this network will increase its utilization for technical and real time data communications in addition to the business systems workload it now handles. The Computer Services group in Sudbury is confident that the data highway will handle communications traffic well into the future.IntroductionIn late 1984, the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited undertook a review of their existing business computer systems. The results of this review indicated that there was an opportunity to improve the timeliness and quality of information coming from the existing computer-based systems while achieving an investment payback by undertaking the project. The greatest benefits from this project would be achieved if the computing tools could be delivered to the employees that were the day-to-day users of the data. Falconbridge's existing business systems were oriented to the batch mode of processing. An alternative solution to using the existing programs had to be found."

This study revealed significantly less favorable perceptions of the existing organizational safety climate among workers in the underground coal-mining sector compared with those in the industrial-minerals and sand, stone and gravel (SSG) sectors. Consequently, it is important to consider pragmatic ways in which health and safety management systems (HSMS) in coal mines can alter processes to improve these perceptions. Given the interdependencies of safety climate factors and HSMS elements, researchers explored mineworker perceptions of the supportiveness of organizational safety climate factors among mineworkers and identified significant differences in perceptions across sectors. In this paper, we suggest that health and safety professionals in underground coal mining and organizations with fewer resources or less mature HSMSs focus on these factors to bolster support for proactive safety performance. Potential barriers to implementing or improving relevant HSMS elements and ideas to help foster more favorable perceptions of organizational safety climate are also discussed.

In recent years, the environmental issues related to the landfill shortage received considerable importance. Many polymeric solid wastes have high resistivity to chemical and biological degradation, and options are sought by which these wastes can be recycled and reused, or reduced in volume. The present study investigated the biodegradation of polyethylene by Aspergillus niger, and biodesulfurization of rubber by pure and mixed cultures of Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The fungus, A. niger, was found to metabolize portions of polyethylene. Quantitative calorimetric measurements revealed that the amorphocity of the sample decreased during biodegradation. Removal of sulfur from synthetic rubber samples containing 2 to 15% sulfur, was studied in shake flask experiments and the associated oxygen consumption was studied in Warburg respirometers. The mixed bacterial cultures were more effective in the desulfurization of rubber samples than the pure cultures of T. thiooxidans and T. ferrooxidans. The data obtained in these studies may have far reaching consequence for the development of new effective processes regarding the remediation and management of discarded polymeric packaging wastes and car tire rubber materials.

Physical property tests were conducted on drill core from three exploratory holes on the Naval Oil Shale Reserve near Anvil Points, Colo. Data and regression analysis curves are presented. Data obtained above the Mahogany zone were used to estimate the potential zone of surface effects from under-ground mining. Single specimen testing was primarily used to obtain Mohr's envelope and subsequent rock properties. The technique is shown to provide satisfactory results for this rock type with a significant reduction of core preparation and testing time.

Best practice standards generally recommend assessment of the environmental and societal risks posed by tailings storage facilities, but they rarely specify how the analysis should be made. As a case study, this paper describes a safety assessment of the Zelazny Most tailings pond operated by the Hydrotechnical Unit of KGHM Polska Miedz SA in Poland. The complete assessment includes a failure mode effect criticality analysis (FMECA) that considers all conceivable failure modes, but this paper focuses on one key mode, the loss of stability during the planned raising of the crest above its current level. Reliability against static dam failure considers uncertainty on the safety factor in a limit equilibrium approach. The threat of dynamic (earthquake induced) instability is assessed by developing a model of future seismicity as a function of the mining plan and considering uncertainty on the induced permanent displacements along critical sliding surfaces. We quantify the additional level of protection against outflow provided by the beach using an event tree with expert-assigned probabilities. Continuous monitoring of the dam for premonitory signs of instability and a set of loss-prevention plans in the case of a spill provide additional layers of protection; their effectiveness is quantified by estimating the fraction of the population that could be evacuated as a function of warning time. The probabilistic analysis indicates that the safety targets are met and produces practical recommendations on how to maintain and improve the safety level while the dam crest is raised above its current level.CITATION:Van Dyck, J, Pytel, W, Veneziano, D, Snow, R and Zanoli, O, 2015. In early June 1986, an underground fire of unknown origin erupted in one of several entries of a coal mine located in southwestern Colorado. For a time, mine personnel aggressively fought the fire. However, control of the fire was later lost. To prevent further damage and reduce the possibility of an explosion, all portals and shafts to the mine were sealed. The mine operator requested the U.S. Bureau of Mines' assistance in obtaining and analyzing mine fire gases taken from sampling ports placed through the mine seals, as well as down boreholes drilled after the fire. This report recounts activities within the first 2 years of the mine being sealed. It includes a description of gases analyzed and mine atmosphere status equations generated from the analyzed gases. The gases were analyzed by chromatography and included standard atmospheric gases as well as higher hydrocarbons that are found in postfire atmospheres. Nine equations were used to evaluate what was occurring within the sealed mine. Following a description of the rationale behind each equation, the 2-year trend is briefly analyzed.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 27,930 acres of the 52,000 acre East Fork High Rock Canyon Wilderness Study Area, CA-020-914/NV-020-006A, in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Humboldt and Washoe Counties, NV, about 45 miles east of Cedarville, CA. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed pertinent literature and county mining records and examined prospects or mineralized areas. There are no organized mining districts and no historical or active claims in the study area; one small pit lies in the southwest corner of the study area. Based on published literature, sample results and field observations, there are no recognized mineral, geothermal, or fossil fuel resources. Epithermal mineralization indicators are not present or exposed. Sand and gravel deposits in the study area are not likely to be developed as other deposits are closer to market areas.

The design and construction of a Concentrator based on initial pilot plant work is rarely perfect. Palabora's plant was no exception although the basic objective to produce copper in a safely conservative manner was certainly achieved in a profitable manner. identification of the metallurgical and mechanical deficiencies of the plant through operating experience and a better concept of the minerology of the orebody enabled the development of a more efficient process both in terms of the metallurgical performance and cost effectiveness. To maintain and improve this level of efficiency, continuous inspection and revision of the plant metallurgy and engineering standards is required. In this presentation a few of the investigations and changes are described: 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill. 2.0 An analysis of the environmental condi¬tions in Palabora's grinding circuit and the introduction of high chrome balls as grinding media. 3.0 The role of magnetite in the beneficiation process at Palabora. 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill.

Crocidolite is a well known causative agent for mesothelioma. Studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width. Epidemiological studies have shown that ‘thin’ fibers from mining areas of Western Australia and the Cape Province, in South Africa are associated with a high mesothelioma risk while exposure to ‘thick’ asbestiform amphibole fiber of the same fiber type are associated with little or no mesothelioma risk. This study is concerned with ‘thick’ Bolivian crocidolite but similar findings also probably explain the paucity of mesotheliomas in the Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite and African Transvaal crocidolite mines. The findings from the present study suggest the incidence of mesothelioma in the three major cities of Bolivia is not significantly elevated above background even though Bolivian crocidolite has been used for the past 60 years commercially and residentially in all three cities. Although some cases of mesothelioma may have been missed due to a failure to reach hospital or a shortened natural lifespan, mesothelioma generally occurs after the age of 50, we cannot tell precisely the extent to which these were confounding. We suggest the most likely explanation for the lack of mesotheliomas despite the large populations at risk from the long and extensive residential and commercial use of crocidolite containing products, is related to an increased fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Introduction ASARCO's Ray Operations include an open-pit copper mine in the Mineral Creek Mining District of Pinel County. The district is located in east central Arizona, 132 km (82 miles) southeast of Phoenix, AZ, and 126 km (78 miles) north of Tucson, AZ. The mine lies 8 km (5 miles) north of the Gila River in Mineral Creek Valley, between the Tortilla Mountains to the west and the Dripping Springs Range to the east. The rich copper deposits of the Mineral Creek mining district were first noted by a US Army Officer in 1847. The Ray Copper Company was the first major operation in the area. The company was named after the Ray mining claim, which was one of the earliest recorded claims. After decades of sporadic and unsuccessful mining ventures, the Ray Consolidated Mining Company was formed in 1910. The company introduced one of the first successful block caving operations in the world. In 1933, the Kennecott Copper Corporation acquired the Ray Consolidated Mining Company and continued operation of the mine under the same name until 1943, when the property was renamed the Ray Mines Division of Kennecott. Underground mining continued until 1955, when the mine was converted to an open pit operation. In November 1986, ASARCO Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division and related facilities from Kennecott. The purchase also included the Hayden concentrator and the Ray Smelter, located approximately 32 km (20 miles) from the Ray Mine. This paper summarizes the 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) in-pit crusher and overland-conveying system and the 24,200 tpd (30.000 stpd) copper SAG concentrator and tailings disposal system constructed at ASARCO's Ray Complex - Ray Operations. General description of facilities The Ray concentrator includes a sulfide SAG concentrator, a "relocatable" in-pit primary-crushing plant and overland-conveyor system, a concentrator tailings-disposal system and plant ancillary facilities, The major elements of the project include: • A relocatable Fuller-Traylor in-pit 1524-mm (60-in) x 2261-mm (89-in) primary gyratory crusher at the 442 m (1450 ft) mine elevation. The crushing plant has a nominal capacity of 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) of sulfide ore. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 1253-m (4110-ft) long overland belt conveyor, which runs from the in-pit crushing facility to a transfer station serving both the Ray Concentrator and the existing Hayden concentrator railroad load-out facility. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 152-m (500-ft) long stackerbelt conveyor, which delivers a nominal 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore from the transfer station to a 23,600 t (26,000 st) live-capacity coarse-ore stockpile serving the Ray Concentrator. • A nominal 27,200-tpd (30,000-stpd) concentrator, including semiautogenous grinding, flotation, copper concentrate filtration and associated plant ancillary facilities. • A tailings disposal system. Flotation tailings are pumped from the Ray Concentrator to a 122-m (400-ft) diam. thickener, located 4.8 km (3 miles) southeast of the Ray Concentrator site. The thickener overflow is pumped to two 76.2-m (250-ft.) diam. concrete process-water reservoirs. The thickener underflow, at 45% solids, is pumped to a new tailings disposal site located at Elder Gulch. • An HDPE-lined temporary-containment area to collect material from Ray Concentrator plant upsets and local storm-water run-off from a 100-year, 24-hour rain event. •A reclaim-water system from the Elder Gulch tailing pond area to the Ray Concentrator. • A 610-mm (24-in.) diam. x 31.9-km (19.2 mile) long fresh-water pipeline from the Hayden fresh-water-well field system to the Ray Concentrator. The overall process design criteria for the new Ray Concentrator is based on a nominal throughput of 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore at 90% plant availability. However, based on the maximum performance capacity of the installed grinding equipment, it may be possible to achieve a sustained operating level in excess of 36,300 tpd (40,000 stpd) when processing soft ores. The RC Harris Filtration Plant, which treats the majority of the fresh water for over 2.5 million Torontonians, is a Canadian Architectural Heritage site demonstrating a classic example of Art Deco Architecture. The facility is undergoing an expansion to install an underground sludge treatment capability. Perched atop a bluff on the North shore of Lake Ontario the structure enjoys a commanding presence on the Lake Ontario shoreline. A series of underground tanks were proposed for the hillside below the structure, which when covered would preserve the building?s architectural presence. However, the plan required two, stepped excavations 12 m and 10m deep into compact, wet sands over stiff clays and clayey silts. Concerns regarding the original structure influenced designers to set the lateral deflection limit for the front footing of the existing structure at 4 mm, (0.03% excavation depth). The design-build team indicated at the time of tender that the movement criteria was unattainable using the tender design. Analysis indicated installation effects and overall elastic movement of the soil mass beneath the building would result in movements of 7 to 9 mm at the structure. Through extensive FLAC analysis and a novel construction geometry the design-build team crafted an alternative that produced significant savings over the original concept. Based upon the analysis the design-build team negotiated a new deflection criteria dictating a maximum of 2.0 mm of movement across the critical expansion joint between the Filter Building front footing and the tank slab beyond. The contractor invested in additional pre tender soils investigation to support the refined design process. The FLAC analyses indicated the Filter Building movements would be elastic and distributed up to 50 m back beneath the front footing of the structure. An extensive precision monitoring program proved construction related movements of 6 to 10 mm horizontal at the front footing. Extensometers placed at two locations over the critical interior tank expansion joint showed no measurable movements. The overall monitoring program, including inclinometers, tilt meters, tie back extensometers (smart cables) and tie back load cells indicated a good match between recorded movements and loads and those predicted by FLAC Analysis.
