Minerals in coals cause operational problems in various coal utilization technology as well as act as diluents towards its heat value. Indian coals contain higher percentage of mineral matter compared to foreign coals due to its formation through drift origin. Efficient utilization of high ash coal in environment friendly manner is the driving force for the development of clean coal technology. Coal gasification offers practical means meeting stringent environment controlled parameters for producing power, chemicals, liquid fuels and clean energy on a single platform. It is well accepted that gasification technology has sufficient potential for sustainable development of clean coal technology. Gasification reactivity depends on the coal properties and operational parameters as well as minerals present in coal. Minerals not only create operational problems but on the other side also catalyze the gasification and combustion reaction. Therefore to understand the effect of minerals on the gasification reactivity, present paper proposes to study the variation of gasification reactivity with various gravity cuts such as, 1.4-1.5; 1.6-1.7; and 1.8-1.9 of a selected coal. Gasification reactivity has been studied by thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA) using CO2 as gasifying agent. Surface properties such as, true density, apparent density, porosity, surface area of different gravity cut samples have also been measured to find out the effect of gravity separation on gasification reactivity. It is generally recognized that the productivity and ultimate recovery of an oil well may be reduced as a result of reduction in permeability of the sand at the well bore by invasion of filtrates and clay particles from drilling fluids. As a means of determining whether a sand has been "damaged" from these sources, several investigators2 3 4 5/ have developed methods of analysis based on the rate of increase in bottom-hole pressure while a well is shut in. Because of growing recognition of the importance of completion practices as related to the quantity of oil that may be recovered from wells, the Bureau of Mines has studied completion practices in California and the Midcontinent area. Well-interference and pressure-buildup tests were completed Ear seven wells in the Scurry Reef field to determine the effective permeability in the reservoir.6/ Also, a study was made of the pressure-decline curves obtained from 35 water-input wells in 5 different production areas of northeastern Oklahoma and eastern Kansas.7/

The stockpiling and reclaiming of bulk materials can be a challenging task for engineers seeking the optimum solution for plant needs, reliability, and at lowest unit cost. The objective of this paper will be to expose advantages, disadvantages and limitations of many storage and reclaiming systems to the responsible engineer and management. The paper will emphasize the practical aspect of stockpiling and reclaiming methods. Many valuable and interesting papers are available dealing with the theoretical viewpoint and application of a particular manufacturer's machine. Several of these are mentioned in the bibliography. As many practical parameters as possible will be given. After twenty years in the field of designing and selling bulk materials handling systems, the needs of the user and the plant are recognized and reasonably understood. This paper cannot give solutions to all problems In this vast field but will stress practical applications and examples of various installations. The evolution of advancements in materials handling is based upon not only technological innovations, but learning from many experiences of others and utilizing them as stepping stones to improved installations.

"Soil mixing and jet grouting provide a means to significantly increase the lateral resistance of pile group foundations with relatively little investment of time, effort, and expense compared to the cost for additional piles necessary to produce the same increased resistance. Comparative field testing conducted on full-scale pile groups before and after treatment of small soil volumes showed significant improvement in lateral resistance. The lateral resistance of the pile group increased by 60% due to soil mixing and by 180% due to jet grouting. To provide additional understanding regarding the influence of the soil mix strength, depth of improvement and width of improvement, a series of parametric studies were performed using a 3D finite element model. This set of “virtual load tests” was then combined with the results from the actual field tests to help develop a simplified model to account for observed behavior. In general, the testing and analysis indicate the pile group and the surrounding improved soil block generally act as an equivalent “super pile”. The passive force, side shear and base shear on the improved soil surrounding the pile group itself increased lateral resistance. This increase in resistance from the soil block can be added to the lateral resistance of the pile group.INTRODUCTIONThe lateral resistance of pile groups is often critical to the design of bridges and high-rise structures subject to seismic, wind, wave and landslide forces. Typically, when analyses indicate that the lateral resistance of a foundation is inadequate, additional piles, drilled shafts or micro-piles are added to increase the lateral resistance. Furthermore, an expanded pile cap or connecting beam is often required to structurally connect the new piles to the existing pile group. While this approach provides the required lateral resistance, it may also be relatively expensive and time consuming. An alternative approach is to use soil improvement techniques to increase the strength and stiffness of the surrounding soil and thereby increase the lateral resistance of the pile group. The improved zone could potentially be relatively shallow because the lateral resistance of piles is typically transferred within 5 to 10 pile diameters. For example, the soil around the periphery of the foundation could be relatively easily improved for an existing foundation as illustrated in Fig. 1(a) using a variety of soil improvement techniques. Alternatively, the soil under the foundation could be improved for a new foundation or even for an existing foundation with a technique such as jet grouting (see Fig. 1(b)). Improving the soil under the foundation would have the potential for producing greater increases in lateral resistance because the improvement would reach interior piles. In addition, the process of creating a cemented “soilcrete” zone around pile foundations could potentially produce a zone which would behave like a reinforced “superpile” with increased structural stiffness."

This circular deals primarily with the various methods of longwall mining used in some mines in certain districts of the Middle Western States. In some instances underground methods were considered comprehensively, and in others only the actual methods of mining and face advance were noted. Results obtained by the mines in output per man were compared only on the basis of an operating day, since idle time and number of men employed would not, be comparable due to the great difference between mines in different districts. Man-hours per ton per operating day are noted in a general way. Material and power costs are not included. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The information used in preparing this paper was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the presidents and other officials of the comparnies operating the mines described. The Vancouver Stock Exchange (VSE) has been providing venture capital for start-up companies since 1907. Ninety years' experience in the junior mining industry has enabled the VSE to develop policies and procedures tailored to the unique needs of start-up companies. Policies and procedures applicable to listed companies are documented in the Corporate Finance Services Department "Policy and Procedures Manual." Approximately 50% of the companies listed on the VSE are in the mineral exploration and development business. The largest number are exploring base metal, precious metal or diamond properties. A recent count shows that about 20 companies are exploring industrial mineral or non-metallic deposits. The minerals sought by these companies include limestone, decorative stone, building stone, lava rock, wollastonite, zeolite, garnet and graphite. There are two basic routes to obtaining VSE financing for an industrial mineral property. The owner can either sell an interest in the property to a listed company or form a company and have it listed on the VSE. In each instance, the listed company is responsible for raising funds to develop the property. A typical financing consists of the sale of company securities byway ofeitherprivate placement or prospectus offering.

A series of steel heats, one low-alloy and nine carbon, was made by the Bureau of Mines in a 1-ton arc furnace from ferrous scrap from incinerated refuse, steel cans, and detinned steel cans, both alone and blended with heavy-melting scrap. Two additional control heats, one of carbon steel and one of low-alloy steel, were made from electric furnace heavy-melting scrap to pro-vide comparative data. The steel products were cast into two 4-by 4-inch nominal 50-pound ingots; in most heats, an 8-by 8-inch nominal 7S0-pound ingot was also obtained. Tests of these ingots indicated that reinforcing bars of acceptable quality can be made from urban refuse components such as steel cans.

Having had occasion while in Europe during the past summer to visit some of the foreign mints and assay offices connected with the same, I thought a brief description of the general process of coining employed, and such items connected with assaying as were new, might prove interesting to the Institute. The principal foreign mints are: the Royal Mint, London; and the mints in Paris, Brussels, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Madrid, Milan, Rome, and Constantinople. My time only permitted my visiting a few of the principal and largest given in the list, and for a description of the remainder I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. James M. Napier, who in company with the deputy master, and chemist of the Royal Mint, made a complete inspection of all the European Mints in 1870.

As real-time air quality monitoring becomes more prevalent in US underground mines, it is important to provide the highest data reliability with the fewest possible sensors. Real-time sensors remain costly, and these costs are not exclusively financial; the time required to install, calibrate, and maintain real-time sensors poses a large barrier to widespread implementation. Current atmospheric monitoring systems typically rely on displaying point-specific values. This requires operators to infer real-time airborne contamination distributions. Monitoring and control software utilizing mine ventilation network (MVN) solvers has been implemented in limited cases because of their ability to simulate ventilation systems quickly, but these solvers use a one-dimensional representation of the mine, limiting spatial resolution of estimated distributions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has likewise been considered as a means to improve spatial resolution, but processing times prevent its use as a basis for monitoring and control. For the real-time monitoring of airborne contamination distributions, we propose a spatial interpolation method that can estimate the distribution of airborne contaminants in near-real time. This method provides a middle ground between fast processing times and increased spatial resolution. With the use of a pathfinding algorithm and optimization through absolute percentage error minimization, this method outperforms spatial interpolation with a Euclidean distance. By providing contamination distribution information to operators, this method and its derivatives stand to outperform current atmospheric monitoring systems.

TVA's involvement in air quality programs is perhaps a bit unique. The Tennessee Valley Authority was established in 1933 as a regional resource development agency and therefore must view clean air and clean water as essential resources for the overall development of the Tennessee Valley region. TVA operates certain resource development and production facilities, including power-generating facilities, which are potential air pollution sources. The remarks in this paper will be restricted to air pollution control technology at power-generating stations. Perspectives of Air Pollution Control The art of pollution control must be viewed from several perspectives: 1. It must be viewed in a time perspective--what is available now for air pollution control, what might be available in the near future, what are the likely technologies for the more distant future, and what the future trends in availability of resources might be. 2. Each air pollution abatement scheme must be viewed in the perspective of its total environmental consequences--not just its ability to clean up the air. The generation of electricity from coal produces waste gases, waste particulates, and waste heat. These wastes must be disposed of either in water, in air, or on land. If the polluting wastes are removed from the gas streams going into the air, then they must be disposed of either on land or in water or, hopefully, converted into a product which has some beneficial use. As an example, removal of S02 from stack gases could be more readily accomplished if one could dump waste sulfur products in water. He would solve an air pollution problem by creating a water pollution problem. 3. Techniques for air pollution control must be viewed in the perspective of regional, national, and world resources with their national security and economic implications. The power industry might reduce air pollution by switching generating plants to burning desulfurized fuel oil or natural gas.

The performance of AB5-type alloys for hydrogen absorption including the electrochemical absorption as an electrode for rechargeable batteries has been demonstrated' to be a complex function of the composition, microstructure and surface condition. The compositional studies have focused primarily on substitutions for Ni on the B-site (e.g. Co, Al, Mn, etc.). This current study examines the effect of rare earth substitutions for La on the A-site and considers both other "light" rare earths (Ce, Nd, Pr) and "heavy" rare earths (Dy, Sm, etc.).

A new hydrothermal field with massive sulfide deposits was discovered in 2004 at 16º 38.4?N, 46º 28.5?W on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Hydrothermal signals had already been recorded from bottom waters and sediments in this area during cruise 19 of R/V Professor Logatchev in 2000. This site was revisited during the 24th cruise of R/V Professor Logatchev in February 2004 when samples of massive sulfides were recovered and video records of the deposits made. The basalt hosted hydrothermal field is situated at a depth of 3700-3750 m, 600 m above the inner floor on the eastern slope of the rift valley. Structurally, the new field is located at the intersection of a deep along-axis marginal fault and a transverse sub-latitudinal dislocation. Six sulfide mounds as well as associated metalliferous sediments were mapped (sampled and/or recorded by video profiling) within the hydrothermal site. The largest ore body, 500 x 225 m, in the southern part of the field consists of small blocky talus and relics of sulfide chimneys partly covered by iron oxyhydroxides. The chimneys are 1-5 m high. The southern and western boundaries of the massive sulfide deposit have not yet been delineated. More than 1,100 kg of massive sulfides and stockwork mineralization were sampled at 7 sites by dredge and TV-grab. Everywhere, iron sulfides were the principal minerals present. Pyrite in association with lesser amounts of chalcopyrite occurs in both massive sulfides and stockwork mineralization. Of particular interest is the chalcopyrite-siliceous stockwork where silicified and chalcopyritized basalts are intruded by a network of chalcopyrite veinlets. These zones could be fairly thick and enriched in base metals. Sphalerite was very rare.

Field measurements utilizing a seat pad accelerometer were made on 61 surface coal mining machines in order to quantify the vibration levels experienced by the operators. Those data were combined with information on the statistics of the operating times of those machines in order to compare the operator's vibration exposure to the criteria in ISO 2631, ?A Guide for the Evaluation of Human Exposure to Whole Body Vibration.? The comparison showed that about ha]f of all surface coal mining machine operators can be expected to be exposed to vibration exceeding the fatigue decreased proficiency criterion, whereas only on the order of 15% would be expected to experience vibration exceeding the exposure limit. Detailed exposure statistics are presented and the implications of the results are discussed.

Commercial deployment of Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) requires field testing of a scale that can stress the geologic reservoirs. One such reservoir of interest consists of unminable coal seams that exhibit favorable characteristics and depositional environments and lower pressure and temperature than other, deeper, reservoirs. Such conditions can reduce compression costs while utilizing the action of adsorption that offers a more effective carbon dioxide (CO2) bonding than free storage or solution. To ensure the success of such tests, a number of parameters should be accurately determined, such as the seam geometry and stratigraphy, coal porosity and permeability parameters as well as optimum injection conditions. In essence the CO2 injection model should be calibrated for the reservoir characteristics using all available data. History matching calibrations are based on gas and water production from existing wells prior to injection. This paper will present reservoir models that were developed for a pilot--scale 907 tonnes (1000 tons) CO2 injection test that was performed in 2009 through one legacy coalbed methane production well in Russell County, Virginia, USA. The model incorporates a number of individual coal seams about 0.3 m (1ft) in thickness located at depths ranging from 300 to 700 m (1,000 to 2,200 feet). Model calibration was performed through history matching to prior production data, and subsequently the model was utilized to develop different injection scenarios. The developed model was used after injection to calculate CO2 plume distribution patterns that were monitored at the injection test. The paper will present model data and assumptions with a special emphasis on the effect of hydraulic fractures and the skin factor to the coalbed methane (CBM) production model.

THIS paper presents the results of a study of the relationship of the electrokinetic or zeta potential to flotation phenomena. The relationship is established on the experimental evidence that mineral behavior in flotation and in cataphoresis is generally governed by the chemical properties and amount of the reagents adsorbed at mineral surfaces. Cataphoresis1-5 or electrophoresis is the name given to the movement of a charged particle in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. Mineral behavior in cataphoresis, as indicated by the magnitude and sign of its ionic charge, can be represented by the term zeta potential. In this paper, the zeta potential represents the difference in potential between the immovable liquid layer attached to the surface of a solid particle and the movable liquid layer in the body of the liquid, and is the result of the tendency of ions on the surface of the particle and within the liquid boundary layer to establish a condition of equilibrium. A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation [z = 47ruu(300)$ Kx] in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, u the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. A convenient source for the derivation of the equation is the book by Thomas,6 The term zeta coefficient is an expression coined to denote the difference between the magnitude of the zeta potential of a mineral suspended in solution A, and that of the same mineral suspended in solution B, which consists of solution A and an additional chemical agent, but is at the same pH. For example, the difference between the zeta potential of galena particles in distilled water and that in any chemical solution at the same pH is a zeta coefficient. The Hornsilver lead-zinc property was examined by the Bureau in 1942 and again in 1944. A project was started on the property in April 1946 and completed in January 1947. Silver was first discovered in this district in 1883, and while complete production records are not available, it is known that a substantial tonnage of high-grade silver ore was shipped before 1887. All of the ore was mined from surface or near-surface workings. When the high-grade oxidized ore was exhausted, the district became inactive and remained so until the 1920's. In 1928 and 1929 some activity was shown in the district, but the Hornsilver mine was not reopened until November 1937. Between 1939 and 1946, the mine produced about 16,000 tons of ore of 531 ounces of gold, 283 ounces of silver, over a million pounds of load, and nerdy 2 million pounds of zinc. The property is now controlled by the Era Mining & Development Co., which has acquired the Last Chance and Ella groups of claims, in addition to the Hornsilver mine.
