Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has been monitoring and studying seismic activity associated with mining in the Coeur d'Alene silver district of northern Idaho. New statistical methods of studying the stope-scale (1-to l00-m) seismicity at one Idaho silver mine are used in this report (part 1) and its companion (part 2). This report deals with methodology and its limitations. The recent concept of fractals and their seismological use is discussed and applied to mining-induced seismicity. Three types of fractal studies are addressed: spatial analyses (including temporal changes of spatial patterns), temporal analyses, and size analyses. Other statistical measures of mine seismicity are also addressed: event mean location, inter-event distance distribution skewness, temporal coefficient of variation, nearest neighbor and next event statistics, and event location planarity patterns. Each of the methodologies discussed (fractal and nonfractal) is presented using sample data from two stopes in the mine. It is shown that stope-scale, mining-associated microseismicity has a fractal nature. The usefulness of demonstrating fractality (scale invariance) for predictive or descriptive purposes depends on recognition of the factors affecting the calculation of fractal dimensions. Several methodological traps are illustrated that can lead to an incorrect conclusion.

This report describes work done by the Bureau of Mines to simplify the design and operation of the vortex cone, a new device for prerefining blast furnace iron. Three new apparatus arrangements were tested. Results with one of these arrangements average 74.2 pct silicon removal and 61 pet oxygen efficiency (disregarding removal of carbon and manganese).

Ever since British Columbia started the ball rolling in 1974 with the introduction of its now-defunct Mineral Royalties Act, all Canada's resource-based provinces have significantly altered their mining tax systems. The last resource-based province to abandon its pre -1974 mining tax structure is New Brunswick, which introduced a new mining tax regime in the summer of 1977 to take effect from April 1 1977. The new structure, which represents the outcome of considerable study and discussions with industry representatives, contains some intriguing concepts which make Nero Brunswick's new mining tax system unique among the Canadian provinces.

METHODS in colorimetry are based on the assumption that the intensity of the color of a definite volume of solution is directly proportional to the quantity of the color-producing substance' present. In the preparation and examination of colored solutions there are three ways in which the depth of color may be varied. These variables are; (1) the quantity of the coloring matter, (2) the quantity of the solvent, or the dilution, and (3) the thickness or depth of that portion of the solution examined. With these three variables as a basis, three general methods in colorimetry have been devised, all of which have been used in the determination of carbon in steel. In the first method, the quantity of the solution is kept the same for both the unknown steel and the standard, and the sections compared are of equal thickness, while the quantity of the standard is varied until the color obtained is of the same intensity as that produced by a definite quantity of the unknown steel. In laboratories where this method is used there is pre¬pared and kept for permanent use a series of solutions with varying amounts of the standard, representing the percentages of carbon from the lowest to the highest demanded in that laboratory. These standard solutions are kept in bottles, or test-tubes of equal diameter, and are arranged in series from the faintest to the most intense color, so that it is a simple matter to find the place of the unknown steel in the series, when the solution is of a definite volume and is contained in a tube of the same diameter as the standard tubes. The purpose of this study was to determine if miners are at risk from exposures to chemicals used in the mining industry, and determine the nature and sources of the illnesses and injuries. The authors reviewed the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) Employment and Accident, Injury, and Illness database and identified 2,705 cases of chemical-related injuries and illnesses that were reported to MSHA from 1999-2006, involving 66 different chemicals. The main source (cause) of chemical-related cases was acids/alkalis (about 39%). The primary nature (effect) of chemical-related cases was chemical burns (about 57%). The job classification where workers incurred the most chemical-related injuries and illnesses was cleaning plant operator/media operator/boney preparation plant operator/crusher worker. The number of nonfatal days lost did not change significantly and overall, the incidence rate of chemical-related cases decreased by 36%. Chemical burns accounted for a large number of injuries; mining companies should carefully examine their personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, training methods, and safety culture to insure that their workers are protected.

Environmental reporting by mining firms takes many forms and change frequently. The objective of these reports is related to increasing the legitimacy of mining firms with their diverse stakeholders. This study, focusing on internet-based reports, shows that there are considerable variations in reporting. This phenomenon is interesting because it belies the efforts pursued by leading industry members under iniatives such as the Global Mining Initiative and the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development project. The observed variation, both internally among reports and between reports and other industry policy statements, suggests that the industry needs to explore the possibilities for more convergence in terms of reporting quality. Based on theoretical constructs from the management literature we present a series of arguments defining necessary and sufficient conditions for durable and well-institutionalized reporting practices and standards.

Among all gravity concentration methods, Shaking-table is the most effective one from the metallurgical point of view. In this study, Shaking-table was used for concentrating a manganese ore sample from Ghasem Abad area in Kerman, Iran. Experiments were designed by using L8Taguchi design with five variables and each variable in two levels. The influence of each variable and their interactions on the operation of the device was studied. The variables under investigation were: table slope, table frequency, water flowrate, feed rate, and particle size. The manganese concentrate grade and recovery were used as response variables. It was shown that water flowrate, table slope, feed rate, and particle size are the significant variable on concentrate grade; while, all the variables influence manganese recovery.

Onahama Smelter of Onahama Smelting & Refining Co., Ltd. has two green- charge reverberatory furnaces; the old furnace was constructed in 1965 and the new one in 1973. This paper discusses the use of oxygen-oil burners in a green-charge reverberatory furnace and also compares the copper loss in slag between the two furnaces at Onahama Smelter. During the past ten years of operation, no shutdowns of the old furnace were necessary and the smelting capacity was increased by 25% by the use of two oxygen-oil burners. These burners are suitable for a green-charge reverberatory furnace to in- crease the smelting capacity without causing an increase of the exhaust gas volume and refractory erosion. After two years of operation of the old furnace, a bottom build-up in the charging zone of approximately 50 centimeters was experienced, and this build-up has stayed at this level since then. In 1973, a new additional reverberatory furnace was put into operation. Copper content in slag of the new furnace was lower by approximately 0.15% than that of the old one during the first several months after the start-up. Investigations were then made on the effect of the bottom conditions in the charging zone on the copper content in slag.

This paper describing the mining practices at a 100 per cent mechanized mine working the Pittsburgh or No. 8 coal bed in eastern Ohio is one of a series being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The purpose of assembling this data is to place before those interested in the mining industry the methods employed and the cost data on the items involved in the winning of the coal and its removal to the railroad car at the tipple. Mining costs are governed by the mining method used, which is selected for its adaptability to local natural physical conditions such as the nature and thickness of the coal, its dip, the character of the roof and floor, and the thickness of the overlying strata.

The mining industry consumes huge water volumes and the waste streams typically contain sulfate, which has caused problems to many operations around the world. Discharge of sulfate to fresh waters is being restricted as the sulfate load increases salinity and causes problems when sulfate is reduced to toxic H2S by natural bacteria. To reduce fresh water consumption, internal water recycling had become a necessity in metallurgical processes. However, the recycling causes accumulation of sulfate and other components in water, causing problems to process performance and increases scaling in piping and equipment. Few technically feasible water treatment processes exist in the market that can be applied to decrease sulfate concentration below gypsum saturation level: biological sulfate reduction, membrane separation, ion exchange, evaporation and chemical precipitation. Some of these technologies are effective for treating wastewater, but there is typically a highly concentrated sulfate fraction left requiring still further treatment. Outotec has developed a sulfate removal solution, Outotec Ettringite process, which allows flexible control of residual sulfate concentration, thereby opening doors for increased water recycle within processes and control of the sulfate in discharged waters. In this article the results and benefits of this novel process along with examples of operating costs are presented.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied parts of the 19,747-acre Lower John Day (OR-005-006) and 7,538-acre Thirtymile (OR-005-001) Wilderness Study Areas in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study areas are located in Gilliam and Sherman Counties, OR, about 13 mi west of Condon. The area is underlain by the Miocene-age Columbia River Basalt Group. The Thirtymile study area is inferred to have 790,000 yd3 of subeconomic gold resources averaging 93.8 mg/yd3 gold ($1.21 yd3 at a gold price of $400 per oz) in two river bars. The Lower John Day study area has five river bars with gold occurrences totaling 1.0 million yd3 and averaging 13.5 mg/yd3 ($0.17 yd3) gold. A preliminary mining feasibility estimate suggests gold could be profitably mined in the study areas from placer deposits containing at least $3.83 yd3 in gold content. Stone, sand, and gravel occur in the study areas, but more accessible deposits are closer to regional markets. No mines or prospects are in or near the study areas; however, one lode mining claim, now abandoned, was located in the Thirtymile study area. Oil and gas leases cover both study areas.

The uninitiated, first-time visitor to the Copper Cliff Smelter of The International Nickel Company frequently finds it strange that the world's largest nickel producing works is located at a site seemingly named in honour of another metal. Industry-wise persons who know The International Nickel Company through its nickel producing, fabricating and sales organizations can be just as surprised to learn that Inco's annual copper production from the Sudbury area mines nearly equals that of nickel. But when the history of the mines and smelters of the Sudbury district is reviewed it is impossible to separate the stories of copper and nickel. In fact, going even further back in time (I), it was due to the similarity in appearance of the nickel bearing mineral niccolite (NiAs) to that of copper ore that led nickel to be tagged with the rather uncomplimentary name of kupfer-nickel or Old Nick's Copper - The Devil's Copper. This was in approximately 1650 and it would take another hundred years, until 1751, before Axel Cronstedt of Sweden obtained nickel in its pure form and permitted it to take its own place in the family of metals. One hundred more years passed before mining came to northern Ontario and approximately one hundred thirty before the beginnings of development of the Sudbury Basin.

This paper describing the mining practice at the Utah Copper Co., Bingham Canyon, Utah, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Utah Copper Co. operates the low-grade open-out copper mine at Bingham Canyon, Utah, which is 30 miles in a southwesterly direction from Salt Lake City. In addition to the mine the company operates two flotation concentrators, the Magma plant and the Arthur plant, which have a combined capacity at maximum metallurgical efficiency of 60,000 tons daily. The concentrators are at Magna, about 18 miles from the mine. The company operates its own standard-gage railway, known as the Bingham and Garfield Railway, between the mine and the mills (fig. 1). Concentrates are smelted at the Garfield smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., situated 4 miles from the mills.

Previously published stream quality data and AMD (acid mine drainage) analyses have been collated into a database (DAME û Database for Assessment of Mine Environments) and additional samples including NMD (neutral mine drainage) have been collected from coal mine drainages on the West Coast. Variations in the chemistry of mine drainage samples can be related to four factors: 1.       regional geology (Brunner Coal Measures or Paparoa Coal Measures) 2.       mine type (open cast or underground) 3.       hydrogeology 4.       local geology   In general mines hosted in Paparoa Coal Measures produce NMD whereas mines hosted in Brunner Coal Measures produce AMD with highly variable chemistry. Differences in coal mine drainage chemistry between mines hosted in Brunner and Paparoa Coal Measure sequences can be measured with acid-base accounting geochemistry. Correlation of ANC (acid neutralising capacity) and MPA (maximum potential acidity) analysis of rocks with mine drainage samples is substantially better than correlation of NAG (net acid generation) analysis with mine drainage chemistry.   It is likely that NAG analysis over estimates acid generation potential of some samples due to release of organic acids that are not released under environmental conditions. In general, differences in mine drainage chemistry between Brunner and Paparoa hosted mines are attributed to the effect depositional environment and diagenesis on coal measure composition. Exceptions to generalisations relating mine drainage to Paparoa or Brunner host rocks are likely where local geological conditions cause increased deposition of pyrite in Paparoa rocks and additional analyses are required to confirm interpretations.   Based on the interpretation of these results a mine drainage chemistry hazard model has been constructed. The hazard model predicts likely variations in mine drainage chemistry based on the four factors listed above. The hazard model has implications for mine related water quality risks. For example, ecotoxicity, human health affects and selection of remediation techniques are all sensitive to mine drainage chemistry.

The underground industry is challenged by many complex technical and non-technical issues and risks. The most obvious of these are the traditional technical issues that we usually try to address with risk management techniques. However, there are many other non-technical risks that our projects face on a daily basis which we often fail to fully recognize or appreciate. This paper addresses some of the less-technical broad-based risks in order to put them into perspective with the technical risks we face day to day in underground planning, design and construction. The good news is that Risk Management techniques are not always about bad things. For obvious reasons Risk Management is always thought of in terms of the ?downside? of risk (i.e., the identification and mitigation of things that can go wrong). On the contrary, there is an ?upside? of things that might go better than expected. Fortunately, if a deliberate effort is made, the same principles and techniques that our industry uses in Risk Management can be applied toward identifying and quantifying the Opportunities and Benefits that might occur. In this way, the process of conducting risk management programs can not only identify the downside risk but can be used to identify and direct projects to take advantage of the upside of uncertainty (i.e., Opportunities as they arise). This beneficial aspect of risk management programs will be highlighted in this paper together with the importance of the non-technical issues.

Dr. Roussey Roussev The use of chemical additives on grinding is of significant importance considering the high energy consumption of grinding processes. My research indicates that the dispersant approach explains the effects, in this particular case of wet grinding. Further, the dispersant approach combined with torque measurements give the possibility of clarifying the mechanisms involved when using grinding aids. I find the conclusions derived from the data obtained to be correct and useful for grinding. In general, I agree with the explanations. However, I would like to discuss several additional points that I consider to be important, and in the same time to mention some of my own results from investigations similar to those presented in the study under discussion. The "bed volume concept" and the change of slurry viscosity explain adequately the data plotted on fig. 3, in conjunction with Figs. 1 and 2. However, the significant increase of the average torque in the case of 83% solid with XFS-4272 introduces the necessity of establishing the optimum of percent solid when dispersant is used. For example, the optimum percent of solid for different materials varies. One of the reasons is the material's mass density. On the other hand, it is necessary to determine the concentration of the chemical used. Because of this, it would be interesting to know how the cited concentration was selected. The supportive discussion and verification by Dr. Roussev, with results similar to that of the paper, is appreciated. I will try to answer the additional questions he has raised. To begin with, the mill was fitted with six lifters of approximately one-quarter inch height. There has been extensive lab and plant level work to understand downstream influences of using dispersants like XFS-4272*. In sulfide ore processing, which is the area in which most industrial scale testing has been performed with this approach, neutral to positive influences have been observed. For example, positive effects (e.g., increased recovery) have been noticed in flotation operations involving ores that have a tendency to produce excessive slimes upon grinding. (1) Also, the use of a dispersant has been shown to demonstrate a positive influence on classification by improving the sharpness of separation and preventing a decrease in d50 value that usually accompanies increasing flow rates to classifiers.(2) The biggest potential downstream problem is in thickening, which at the dosages involved, has not been a problem in plant scale usage. The commercial price of dispersants like XFS-4272 is quite variable depending on source, concentration, etc, but a typical cost of XFS-4272 to achieve a 10% increase in throughput in industrial mills has been between 20 and 35- US per ton of feed ore (1981).

"During construction of a 9.5-ft. diameter sanitary sewer tunnel, the City of Edmonton encountered a large pocket of flowing sand that flooded their TBM and caused significant surface subsidence, stopping further tunneling by the TBM through this zone. A unique collaborative effort ensued between the authors representing the city, consulting engineers and academic researchers to develop the optimal strategy for grouting the problematic soils. The site has a layer of very find sand between 20 and 30 ft. in depth with fines contents ranging from 5% to more than 40%. The collaboration extended from requesting additional site investigation efforts to shipping samples to the UT-Austin laboratories for grout testing plus ground and grouting characterization tests resulting in field recommendations for a full scale ground improvement program. New research information on the grouting of fine sands along with a collaborative framework for the design of in-situ grouting projects are the key topics presented. INTRODUCTION Encountering a large unexpected pocket of flowing sand with an open-faced TBM while excavating a tunnel below the groundwater table is never a good thing. This was certainly true for the City of Edmonton when one of their Lovat TBM’s became inundated by flowing sand while excavating the 9.5-ft. diameter Millwoods Double Barrel Replacement Tunnel in September 2013. However, since the City of Edmonton self-performed this work, a rare situation existed where the site could be investigated objectively, without the prejudice of contending parties selectively influencing how information was gathered and presented, to accurately examine site conditions with a goal of identifying the best remediation measures."
