Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk. Keywords: Recycling, Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite, Ionic Liquids, BMIC Recycling of aluminum metal matrix composites (MMC) via electrolysis in ionic liquids at near room temperature was investigated. The electrolytic melt comprised of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC) and anhydrous AlCl3. Impure aluminum composite (Duralcan MMC Al-380, 20 vol % SiC) was electrochemically dissolved at the anode and pure aluminum (>98%) was deposited on a copper cathode. The deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractrometer, and mass spectrometer. The influence of various process parameters such as concentration of electrolyte, and applied cell voltage on the recycling process was studied. The recycling process yielded current densities in the range of 200-500 A/m2, and cathode current efficiency of about 85%. The results indicated that impurities such as Cu, Si, Ni, Fe, Mg, Mn, and SiC particles were removed as anode residue. Energy consumption of about 3.7-6.3 kWh/kg-Al was obtained at a cell voltage of 1.0-2.0 V and cell temperature of 100 ± 5°C. Low energy consumption and no emission of pollutants are the two main advantages of this process compared to present recycling processes.

This paper is based upon field studies conducted in a western Canadian open pit coal mine. This work has involved the adaptation of microprocessor-based instrumentation to monitor various operating parameters on-board blasthole drills and mining shovels. A review of instrumentation and monitoring methodology will first be presented. Based upon experience from field-based studies, the paper will subsequently focus on the application of monitoring technology within the framework of an integrated Equipment Monitoring System. Such a system will permit the real-time performance evaluation of key equipment involved in surface mille production.

Recent regulatory changes in the United States make it mandatory to conduct structural analysis of coal mine seals used to isolate abandoned workings from active mining areas. Different loading criteria are available for seal design depending on whether gob composition is actively monitored and maintained or not and whether the gob conditions lead to deflagration or detonation type loading. Since the loads involved in seal designs are dynamic in nature, the structural analysis must be made using dynamic stress analysis techniques. However, because of the significant complexities involved in conducting dynamic analyses, some designers use approximate simplified techniques to address the design problem. In this paper two such simplified methods are critically evaluated for their suitability to design coal mine seals. The benefits and limitations of the simplified methods are also outlined. Some comparisons are made to show the differences between sophisticated three dimensional dynamic analyses and the simplified methods and to delineate the problems associated with the latter approaches.

The existing main mine ventilation system for the production areas to the Kiruna mine was constructed during the period 1994-1996 and extended with 4 more shafts, including fan stations, for the sea ore body from 1997-1998. Two papers have been presented from this project at the 7th US Mine Ventilation Symposium in 1995 and at The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress in 1997. In 2005, pre-studies for a new main haulage level were started. Different haulage methods were presented including ventilation systems. The pre-studies showed that the existing ventilation system, including fan stations for the new main haulage system in the production area, could be extended. However, a new system for the central area, which was not in the initial investment program, would be needed. In the beginning of 2006, a decision was made to design a new ventilation system for the central area to make it possible to get air to the development work for the new main haulage system, independent of the haulage method. This system was operational by the beginning of 2007. The new main haulage system, which was decided to be located on level 1365 m, only requires that the existing shafts be extended - the capacity of the fans seems to be enough. However, the problem is that the existing level 1045 m and the new level 1365 m have to be in operation in parallel for approximately 7-8 years. The challenge for the moment is determining how to ventilate the production areas for both levels at the same time, while simultaneously constructing the extended system. This paper will describe the problems associated with the extension of the main ventilation system and some potential solutions for these problems. The new main haulage level 1365 m must be in operation by 2012.

In order to increase productivity and decrease reducing agent rate (RAR) of blast furnaces, slag content of sinter ore must be decreased. However, gangue content in iron ore tends to increase because of resource depletion. Therefore, amount of high-grade concentrate in sinter ore feeds should be increased, but this situation causes a decrease in permeability of the sintering bed so that the productivity of sinter process decreases. In order to increase the amount of concentrate, NSSMS has developed the P-type separate granulation method, RF-MEBIOS and SPEx II technologies. These technologies have been introduced to actual sintering machines. In this report, a new technology using microparticles of iron ore is proposed to increase the amount of concentrate in sinter blends. Basic experiments simulating the sinter making process using microparticles of iron ore were undertaken. Crushed pisolite, containing >60 wt per cent -10 µm was prepared for binder. The pisolite microparticle binder was mixed with another Australian sinter feed ore in a high-speed agitating mixer. They were mixed for about one minute, and then granulated using a pan pelletiser. After that, they were added to another raw material mixed by a drum mixer, and then charged in a pot for a sinter pot test. As a result, when the amount of concentrate increased from 13 wt per cent to 20 wt per cent, productivity was almost kept constant using pisolite microparticle binder.CITATION:Kamijo, C, Yamaguchi, Y, Matsumura, M, Kawaguchi, T and Nomura, S, 2017. "The Star Lake Mill was commissioned by Cameco (formerly Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation) in 1986 to process a small high grade gold deposit in a remote location of Northern Saskatchewan. The lean approach to the 200 t. p. d. CIP mill to minimize capital and operating costs employs a number of unique features which are described along with highlights from the initial two years of operation.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe Star Lake Mine is located 520 kilometers north of the City of Saskatoon (Fig. l) with the nearest population centre in La Ronge 130 km to the south. Gold showings were first discovered in the area in the 1940's with the Star Lake ""21 Zone"" ore body discovered in 1983. The Star Lake Mine started operations in 1986 becoming the first primary gold producer in Saskatchewan in over 40 years. The mine is operated by Cameco (formerly SMOC) with 50\ ownership in a joint venture with starrex Mining Corporation (35\) and Uranerz Exploration and Mining (15%).The limited reserves coupled with the remote location and the price of gold ($300-$350 u.s./oz) at the time the project feasibility was being assessed required a lean approach to make the short term operation successful. This paper describes the approach taken in the design and construction of the Star Lake Mill and describes the mill operation with highlights of the initial two years of operation."

Industrial minerals have always enjoyed an important share in the technological growth of any country in the world. Today, extraction and trading of industrial minerals has expanded, but is also subject to stricter environmental guidelines. This paper presents the current status as well as the growth potential in the exploitation of industrial minerals in the countries of the south eastern European region, i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, F.Y.R.O.M., Greece, Italy, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia and Turkey. More specifically, annual production figures per country are presented for1992-1998. These figures are compared to each other and, where applicable, to world production figures. Trading of industrial minerals from these countries to Europe and the world and its effect to the local economies is also evaluated were such data is available.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of M.Sc. (Chemical Engineering)degree Identification of non-linear systems can be a daunting task and in the process industries the problem is complicated considerably by the presence of noise from various sources, non-stationarity of the data and intermittence, such as observed in particulate flows. Traditional methods, such as frequency analysis and linear model-ling do not handle these systems well. Similar problems arise with the application of non-linear theory developed over the last few decades, where much of the analysis depends on embedding of the data in a phase space or pseudophase space, since these methods were not originally designed to deal with noisy systems. In contrast, singular spectrum analysis is a method which can be used to identify structure and distinguish noise from important information in multivariate data, such as the trajectory matrices of time series measurements. It provides an orthogonal basis onto which the data can be transformed, so that components of the time series can be investigated individually. With Monte Carlo methods, the components can be compared with those from linear surrogate data in order to identify possibly non-linearities in the data. In this paper, this versatile technique is briefly explained and illustrated by means of case studies.

In most coal preparation processes, water is a necessary medium, but the presence of water in coal after it has been cleaned has a negative impact on transportation costs, handling and specific energy values. The utilization of super absorbent polymers (SAP) in the nappy application is well known. The concept of utilizing these polymers was investigated for the purposes of dewatering coal and other fines, generated by preparation processes such as flotation. SAPs are granular highly cross-linked synthetic copolymers with excellent water-absorbing properties. The dewatering process is characterized by three main stages: (a) contact of super absorbent polymer with high-moisture fine coal; (b) separation of dewatered fine coal from super absorbent polymer; and (c) regeneration of used super absorbent polymer, by exploiting its response to changes in conditions such as pH or temperature. Preliminary tests showed the separation step to be very difficult. The novel idea of encasing a given amount of polymer in a water permeable cloth solved this problem (of separating the swollen polymer from the dewatered coal). Preliminary tests investigating the effectiveness of the sachets of polymer showed a drastic decrease in the moisture contents of slurries. Furthermore, it was shown that it was possible to regenerate the polymer (still within the sachets) through thermal drying. A full-scale experimental programme was then followed to accurately determine the feasibility of using sachets of SAP. The experimental variables were initial slurry moisture content and polymer dosage. It was observed that the sachets seemed to work fastest and most effectively at high moistures and also at higher dosages of SAP. Regeneration of the polymer was also investigated, using two methods: thermal regeneration and pH-induced regeneration. The experimental variables, for investigating the regeneration process, were method of regeneration and grade of water used. Thermal regeneration at 70°C seemed to work successfully. Although the cost of using thermal energy is still a problem, the safety aspect (fire hazards) has been addressed since the polymer does not ignite when heated, unlike fine coal particles that may do so. The alternative method of regeneration, which exploits the pH-sensitivity of the polymer, was less successful, and further work needs to be conducted.

"Kinross Gold Corporation’s Mantos de Oro (MDO) gold/silver mine in northern Chile currently processes 15,000 tpd of oxide ores through a mill, whole ore cyanide leach plant followed by a Merrill-Crowe refinery. With the expected depletion of these oxide ores in a few years a new sulphide mineral deposit, Ladera-Farellón has been identified to potentially replace existing ore reserves. The deposit contains approximately 0.5g/t Au, 6g/t Ag and 0.5% Cu. The principal sulphide mineral in the deposit is enargite (Cu3AsS4) which hosts the majority of gold and silver and the copper. Direct cyanidation testwork has shown the sulphide mineral is refractory with a low gold recovery of 36% and silver recovery of 45%. Oxidation of the sulphides is required to liberate gold and silver and allow recovery of copper as an important pay-metal. Therefore, at MDO a new metallurgical process route with oxidation as a pretreatment step is required for viable treatment of such new sulphide mineralized material with acceptable recoveries of pay-metals.Analysis of flowsheet options was completed based on bench-scale and pilot scale metallurgical testwork as well as with reference to existing studies and operations. The process options investigated assume concentration of sulphides by flotation, followed by either pressure oxidation, bacteriological oxidation or roasting. Preliminary evaluation of flowsheet options focused on process risk, operability, technology availability and the economics of the project with emphasis on use of the existing metallurgical plant to reduce capital cost. Operating costs for each process option were also included in the relative analysis.The challenges of treatment of MDO sulphides, principally enargite and pyrite for recovery of gold, silver and copper center on fixation of arsenic and sulphur capture with environmentally acceptable disposal of residue tailings. This environmental focus was included in the process option selection and comparative analysis.This paper presents a review of the process options considered and highlights comparative advantages/disadvantages of each process with associated environmental issues. Preliminary conclusions are drawn on roasting as a potentially favorable process option for the treatment of MDO sulphides."

The first stage of the development of a new modified 201-type low nickel austenitic stainless steel is described in this paper. The alloy is intended for use as a structural alloy, and so requires a yield strength >400MPa as well as acceptable weldability and toughness. The low nickel content will give a lower material cost in comparison to more conventional austenitic grades, and the processing route is required to be similar to that of Type 304 to keep the processing cost low. The base alloy was designed using empirical methods developed for stainless steel, and the properties of the base alloy were verified using a range of small-scale melts. The base alloy had a 0.2% proof strength of ~320-400MPa, and so it is planned to use V additions of ~0.15% to bring about precipitation strengthening in the hot rolled condition, so raising the alloy?s proof strength above the 400MPa minimum.

In the condition that drilling and blasting technique is inevitable depending on the rock mass and material characteristics on mining activities, the fragmentation rate and particle size distribution of the muckpile after blasting has important influences on the performance of subsequent mining activities such as loading, hauling, crushing, grinding etc. and the total costs of that mine. Drilling and blasting is an important step in this process chain and it's results such as fragmentation, muckpile shape and looseness, dilution, damage and rock softening effect the efficiency of downstream processes. There is an increasing body of blasting research indicating significant impacts in these downstream processes.

This coal basin is a fore-deep basin with a lot of similarities with the Appalachian basin in the U.S.A., where throughout the 1990s, the research in coalbed methane grew rapidly due to a combination of factors, including the high prices for gas and electricity. In the Asturian Central Coal Basin 129 coal beds with thickness ranging from 0.8 to 1.5 m have been recognised in the productive carboniferous in an area bigger than 1500 km2. The maturation grade of these coals varies from the external zones of the basin where the volatile content ranges from 35%-40% to 20%-30%, to the internal zones of the basin where the volatile content ranges from 20% to 10%. In this context a sustainable exploration for fossil fuel is currently being undertaken in the most favourable areas of the basin in order to evaluate the real possibilities for coalbed methane (CBM) resources.

Electronic Delay Detonators (EDDs) with remote wireless programming and initiation capabilities have been successfully used for almost two years now. This system has been used in blasts mainly in South Africa, but also in South America and other countries in Africa. Initially the industry was slow to accept the idea of remote programming and blasting. The advantages were not fully understood and there were some safety concerns. With close to 200 successful blasts as a reference, a much better understanding exists. The advantage of such a system becomes even more significant when the programming of the detonators is digitally integrated with the blast design software as used by the Blast Engineer. It is now possible to import a survey file into the blast design software, to do the blast design using actual hole positions and to then export the designed firing times directly to the detonators down the hole via remote wireless communication. Mines that have been exposed to this technology favour it to the extent that wireless centralised programming is becoming the norm against which other electronic delay detonator technologies are measured.

Mineral processing models have been discussed for many years but it was not until digital computers became available about 1960 that serious attempts at circuit simulation could be carried out. Even then the work was primarily academic until PCs could be used by engineers in plants and design offices in the mid-1980s. Since then simulation has moved quickly and it is now at the point that most processes can be simulated reasonably accurately for purposes of design and optimization. There are still some significant deficiencies, notably in dry grinding and separation, and in the chemical interactions in flotation. Future work will involve: ?improvements of existing models ?dynamic simulation for automatic control and, in particular ,for training which is a weak link ?using advanced simulation models to predict liberation and separation from data acquired from SEM-based liberation analysers. Eventually mineral processes models will be part of total simulation systems which will incorporate mining and downstream processes including all environmental impacts.

Surface and subsurface stabilization of mining-related wastes through revegetation depends upon the physical, chemical, and biological condition of the waste following mining. Mining disturbances can significantly alter the soil physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of a site, reducing or eliminating mycorrhizal fungi from the soil. Mycorrhizae are economically and ecologically important because they can alleviate environmental stresses caused by lack of proper soil condition and because they are vital to stabilization of mining waste by increasing plant survival and biomass through increased nutrient and water uptake. This report discusses some of the ecological factors that may affect mycorrhizae-plant associations on mining-related wastes and provides general information on mycorrhizae inoculation technology.
