This report focuses on the U.S. Bureau of Mines research regarding desensitization and malfunction of delay detonators and cap-sensitive explosives. Delay blasting in underground coal generates tremendous shock waves and rifting forces that fracture and heave coal. The shock waves from charge explosions radiate outward in all directions through the coal, impacting neighboring charges with later delays. The impact phenomena have debilitating effects, causing degrees of reduced charge performance ranging from misfires or weak detonations to out-of-sequence detonations. Impaired charges react poorly, fracture less coal, and produce fumes with higher toxicity. Coal-mine, underwater, and simulator tests were conducted to more thoroughly understand the shock damage mechanism. Recently the U.S. Bureau of Mines partially resolved the malfunction problem by demonstrating the feasibility of formulating a rugged explosive. This rugged cap-sensitive candidate passed the requisite tests for certifying an underground coal-mine explosive. With natural aging the formulation rapidly lost initiation sensitivity. The charge formulation had to be rebatched to finish the testing and therefore could not be certified.

A sub-level open stoping method is being used to mine the massive deposits at TARGET Gold Mine which uses cemented tailings to backfill the stopes. This requires the construction of bulkheads to contain the freshly placed backfill, capable of resisting the hydraulic pressure imposed by filling. The bulkheads must contain an 8 metre head of backfill slurry within 48 hours and withstand the force exerted by a 35 metre load of consolidated fill at a maximum estimated fill relative density of 1.9. After a variety of methods of construction were evaluated, it was decided to construct the bulkheads using the low density, fast-setting foamed cement-based product TEKSEAL HS manufactured by MINOVA RSA. The cement foam is contained between low-cost steel and fabric brattices which are easy to construct, using a method specially developed for the TARGET bulkheads. The paper will describe the design, trialling and construction of the bulkheads, and results obtained to date.

This report presents a survey of published novel coal cutting (mining) concepts and a brief discussion of each one. A preliminary evaluation follows which identifies promising concepts, emphasizing reduced dust generation and economic production potentials. The promising concepts are then studied more deeply and evaluated in more detail with recommendations given for further development action. This paper describing the methods employed in the purchasing and supply departments of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on office practice in mining operations. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Miami Copper Co.'s plant is located about 1 mile from the town of Miami, in the Globe-Miami Mining District, Gila County, Ariz. The property consists of a complete mining plant, concentrator, high-pressure steam power plant, and many other attendant structures. In normal times the company employs about 1,500 men, and mines and mills about 6,000,000 tons of ore annually.

Thank you for the invitation to address The AusIMM Young LeadersÆ Conference here today. When I first saw the conference theme û æadvancing technologies and their future applications in the mining industryÆ û my interest was sparked because there is little doubt that technology and technological advances will determine the relevance of this industry in the future. And the people seated here today are major players in determining the minerals industryÆs destiny.During my 20-year association with the mining industry, I have observed a number of significant changes that have been delivered as a result of the vision of technical specialists. These changes have built a more competitive industry, a more socially acceptable industry and most importantly an industry with ever-improving safety performance. The purpose of my address is to attempt to provide a context and foundation for other presenters over the following two days. Today, I wish to try to answer the question, æWhy do we invest in new technology in the mining industry?Æ, via: a brief history lesson, a review of the needs of the business, a look at the process for improvement, and finally an example from WMC ResourcesÆ current technology portfolio. I would like to take a very brief walk back in time. During the iron and bronze ages, whilst our ancestors IÆm sure never spoke the phrase ænecessity is the mother of inventionÆ, I am sure they lived by it. Undoubtedly more so than we do today. The roots of geology, mining and extractive metallurgy grew out of the need for better tools in order to get access to the basic necessities of life. It was their superior ability to generate and deliver these ætechnologyÆ improvements that underpinned great civilisations such as the Egyptians, Romans and Incas. The application of mineral technology improvements by these civilisations was crucial to their success, it was their competitive advantage at the time. Many historical texts include detailed descriptions of both mining and processing fundamentals that formed the basis of many of todayÆs operations and processes. However, it is technological improvements to these fundamentals, as well as the development of new technologies, that have preserved the fundamentals as viable options for the industry today. Even in my time in the industry, there have been substantial improvements in the way business processes operate. When I first started working in a gold mine in WA in the late 1980s, the office had one PC (a 286 processor). All data was managed by paper and then often re-typed into other databases. Electronic mine design and process control was in its infancy. Today, massive amounts of data are recorded, analysed and acted upon almost without any human interaction. Our industry today has far different challenges than those described by Argricola. These are many and diverse, but new technologies are required to address three distinct classes of need: 1. Societal needs: physical needs for food, shelter, recreation and leisure; community and political needs for less waste, less emissions, better safety and working conditions, less energy consumption and sustainability. 2. Individual needs: intellectual needs to create innovative technical and organisational ideas. 3. Wealth generation needs: investor needs for maximising operating efficiency and value growth. Each new technology, to varying degrees, fulfils one or all of these needs. In many cases, the driver of a technological development was to fulfill only one of these needs, but after it was implemented, the development actually fulfilled each need. I would like to expand on these needs.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Ore deposition was related to three major stages: continental rifting and separation (Vendian-Late Cambrian), convergence (Late Cambrian-Early Silurian) and collision (Early Silurian-Devonian). The first stage included deposition of volcanogenic massive sulphide Zn-Cu and stratabound or stratiform Fe and Zn-Pb(-Cu) on continental margins, as well as less economic Nb and Fe in carbonatites, U, Mo, Ni and V in Alum Shales and orthomagmatic Cr, Fe-Ti and Ni(-Cu). The numerous volcanogenic massive sulphides formed during convergence included Early Ordovician Cu-Zn, mature-arc Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe-oxide deposits, Besshi-type deposits dominated by Cu or Zn in gabbro-intruded sediments and minor Cu-Ni(-PGE), Cu-Mo and skarn deposits. The collisional stage is represented by epigenetic deposits including sandstone Pb deposits (Pb, Zn, Ba, F and Cu) and minor vein deposits with variable Au, Ag, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe, As, Sb, W and Mo

At the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied prospects, claims, and mineralized sites in a 43,053-acre portion of the 51,262-acre Desatoya Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-030-l10) in 1985. The study area, located 50 miles east of Fallon, NV, is underlain by alluvial deposits of Quaternary age and volcanic and volcanic-derived sedimentary rock of Tertiary age. No mines or recent exploration activity were identified within the area studied. The Gold Basin area, located 1/2 mile to the south has produced 982 ounces of gold and 10,086 ounces of silver. The Cold Springs area, located 1/2 mile to the west, has recently been explored for gold-silver. Mineralization at these two areas apparently did not extend into the study area, but future mining at these areas would likely impact it.

The greisen-bordered quartz veins are spatially, temporally and genetically associated with a late Cretaceous granite intruding an early Palaeozoic, limestone-rich formation. Paragenetic data indicate three stages of hydrothermal mineralisation, the first typically in or within 500 m of the granite stock and showing vertical zoning between deeper Mo and higher W, the other two more abundant in the upper and outer parts of the mineralised area. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope data indicate that hydrothermal veins formed over a temperature range of 120-395 degrees C from low-salinity fluids. Early wolframite and molybdenite deposition in stage I occurred at temperatures of 300-395 degrees C from magma-derived, low-salinity, CO2-rich fluid, mainly as a result of fluid boiling and associated CO2 effervescence. Progressively larger volumes of local meteoric water entering the system led to the successive deposition of scheelite in stage I vugs, stage II base-metal sulphides and stage III fluorite-carbonates. Remobilisation of W and its later deposition of scheelite in the outer and shallower portions of the system occurred at 215-275 degrees C and stage II and III mineralisation from lower-temperature fluids that became progressively lighter in stable isotopes. The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) operates two water-intakes in Lake Mead, located 20 miles east of Las Vegas, Nevada. Severe drought has caused decline in lake level by 85 feet since 2000 and future declines are expected. SNWA will construct a third deep-water intake to ensure existing water system capacity. This paper describes expected construction challenges for the new project that consists of: an intake structure and tunnel beneath the lake, pumping station, pipeline to connect existing treatment facility, and interconnecting underground adits. The project will be completed in the year 2012 for total estimated cost of approximately $600 million.

Since the initial start-up, the Toyo Smelter & Refinery has been operating in harmony with the ambient environment, and improvements have been implemented with technologies specifically developed for further protecting the environment. Toyo Smelter & Refinery is now planning to increase the copper production capacity from 280,000 tpy to 450,000 tpy, over a period of several years. In 2003, the first step of this smelter expansion and modernization plan was implemented. The production capacity of the P-S converter was increased dramatically, as it became possible to operate under a ?2 hot-2 blowing? schedule. In 2005, an additional converter will be installed, in order to allow operation under a ?3 hot-2 blowing? schedule. This report will describe the technical improvements on the P-S converters, as well as describe the Toyo expansion program and discuss the technologies applied to the fugitive gas collecting system.

The feasibility of using the nucleation properties of combustion generated particulates for the identification of their sources was investigated, using the Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) Spectrometer. The Investigated materials included coal, wood, belt materials, electrical insulation, brattice cloth, and diesel exhaust. The materials were heated In an oven using filtered air flow, and their time, temperature, and the critical supersaturation spectrum of condensation nuclei (also referred to as the CCN spectrum) produced by the combusting material were recorded. Some data was obtained on a typical metal-mine background containing blasting products. The data was processed and analyzed In an attempt to specify parameters and limits that would allow the identification of the combustion sources. It appears that under controlled test conditions It Is possible to Identify the source on the basis of data derived from the CCN spectrum. More general use of the Idea for fire detection under uncontrolled practical circumstances in an actual mining environment does have potential but would require further research.

Uravan, Ambrosia Lake, Gas Hills and South Texas are all historic names in US uranium. These mining areas supplied the uranium that brought the United States into the nuclear age during the 1960s, and fueled the birth of nuclear energy for peaceful uses — a promise of nearly limitless, clean energy for the world’s future. That promise still exists today, but it is hard to hear over the rhetoric of environmental activists and politicians. Nuclear power offers dependable electricity with limited environmental impact at stable prices. Nuclear power releases no greenhouse gases or particulate matter into the atmosphere. High level nuclear waste (HLW), although long lived, is readily controlled and compact. In the United States, generating 1 billion kWh of electricity with coal produces 47 kt (52,000 st) of solid waste (ash and sludge), compared to 3.6 t (4 st) of HLW produced by nuclear.

[ ] A period of heavy rains caused the river Adda to flood parts of the Valtellina, one of the Alpine valleys of Northern Italy. The exceptionally high waters put under considerable strain the whole system of embankments and levees controlling the river and protecting the adjacent towns and lands. In some places the water breached and washed away the embankments, submerging large tracts of cultivated land, buildings, roads and railway tracks. The town of Talamona, in the lower Valtellina, was hit particularly hard: in its proximity the river overrun and then washed away 300 m (1,000 ft) of embankment (see vicinity map, fig. 2), depositing large amounts of riverbed debris onto over 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of fertile land.

In 1910 the Richmond-Eureka Co. suspended all operations except small-scale leasing, but company and other geologists contended that the El Dorado dolomite would also carry ore in its continuation from fault block north and northeast of the productive old working. The company began to explore the fault block in 1923 by diamond drilling from the,900 level of the Locan shaft, but for various reasons the hole was drilled to a depth of only 2 feet and was then abandoned. Eureka Corporation, Ltd., planned an extensive diamond-drilling program, which included four deep diamond-drill holes, one designated ""A"" fig. if it is to be drilled from the surfaced, and three designated ""E"", ""C"" and ""D"" figs land to be drilled from the 900 level of the Locan shaft. Of these only B and C were completed by the company. Hole C was a contribution,of the hole started by the, started by the Richmond Eureka Co. The site for hole D (figs. 1 and 2) was prepared, but the hole was not drilled. Both B and C holes penetrated sulfide ore carrying good percentages of zinc, lead, gold, and silver. The ore bodies were 40 feet thick and were found approximately 1,400 feet below the 900 level of Locan shaft.On the basis of the very favorable results obtained from the drilling program, the Eureka Corporation planned extensive development of the property and in 1942 commenced sinking the Fad shaft (figs. 1 and 2). The shortage of equipment and materials brought on by the war and difficulties with water in the shaft greatly hindered progress. However, early in 1943 the Eureka Cor¬poration, Ltd., of Canada submitted to the War Production Board a proposal for developing the mine and milling 500 tons of zinc-lead ore a day. The proposal involved an expenditure of $2,890,750."

The extraction of iron and lead from their oxides with a volatile organic ligand such as acetylacetone in the gas phase offers potential advantages of lower energy consumption, recycling of the extractant, recovery of pure metals, and a reduced environmental impact compared with conventional extraction processes. The influence of reaction temperature, ligand flow rate, and metal oxide levels on the extraction and rates of reaction of iron and lead from single metal oxide (synthetic haematite (Fe2O3) and synthetic massicot (PbO)) systems in a fluidized bed was studied. It was found that at the investigated acetylacetone flow rates, the influence of mass transfer was limited, but that the reaction suffered from reactant starvation. When the metal load increased the effect of starvation on the rate of reaction also increased. The reaction kinetics increased with an increase in temperature for both systems. At low metal oxide concentrations more that 80 per cent of the iron and lead could be extracted from their respective metal oxides after only four hours.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and these data change as internal and external conditions evolve. Staffing turnover hinders experienced-based decisions especially with simple tools like spreadsheets. Lack of current information can contribute to decisions that result in significant deterioration in the quality of operation. Timely, unified information from sophisticated analyses presented to the broadest possible reach will improve operation. The major innovation is the addition of the web browser to the suite of software people will use with no training – the other two are spreadsheets and graphical presentations – and the consistent organization and transformation of the real time data to support broad access. This paper describes the data transformations and presentation methods necessary for a Web view, especially the special needs of real time data and analysis required for active operations decision-making. Many people inside and outside the complex, not just operators, need timely information that is abstracted, aggregated, organized and unified. Unification and aggregation of real time data presented via the Web opens a new paradigm for collaboration. The analysis tools are as important as the data. These rule-based tools add significantly to the operations database in the form of results stored for viewing with plant data. Mining and metallurgical plants already use many sophisticated analysis tools such as predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. These add real time events, similar to an alarm package, and unified production information to the operational database. Simple models are used on line to create key indices that provide a real time indication of performance. Key indices include metrics for losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency, and overall process equipment effectiveness. These additional data in the operations database are used for early fault detection, increased production, better quality, higher availability of equipment and faster detection of process bottlenecks. An important feature is the ability for people to create their own key indices and store the results for use by anyone in the plant historian, but accessible by a browser. The mining of coal in Alaska receives special treatment in the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 1977 (PL95-87). Section 708 of the Act required that the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) perform a study of "Surface Coal Mining Conditions in the State of Alaska, In Order to Determine Which, If Any, of the Provisions of the Act Should be Modified with respect to Surface Coal Mining Operations in Alaska'. The special committee on Alaskan Coal Mining and Reclamation of NAS completed their study in 1980 and prepared their report (NAS, 1980). At this time, the Secretary of the Interior and the Congress have taken no special action with regard to either special regulations geared specifically to Alaska or to submitting special draft legislation to the Congress requesting amendment of PL95-87. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has drafted legislation which was submitted to and passed by the 1982 session of the State Legislature. The State regulatory agency has also drafted the requisite regulations necessitated by the amendments to the State's Basic Coal Mining Act. It is expected that by mid 1983 DNR will have applied for "primacy" to the office of Surface Mining, U.S. Department of the Interior (OSM). They will be submitting the amended State Law, the revised State Regulations and an operational plan as called for by OSM regulations. The presumption is that primacy will be granted to the State of Alaska under PL95-87. The Usibelli Coal Mine continues to be the only operational commercial mine for coal in the State of Alaska. It produced 7.26 x 10 kg (8 x 10 " T) of coal during 1981. The current mine was started in 1920 by Captain Lathrop, an early developer and pioneer in Alaska. It was continued by Emil Usibelli and was taken over after the death of E. Usibelli (in the 1964 earthquake) by his son Joseph Usibelli who is the current President of, the firm3 Their latest improvement is a 27.5 m (36 yd. )Bucyrus-Erie Dragline which handles most of the overburden removal. The coal is removed by a loader-truck combination. They are currently starting up the use of a unit train loading facility which handles forty cars every two hours. This loading system was a development necessitated by the Sun Eel Export contract. The Alaskan Railroad was a major cooperator in the development of the first unit train loading facility in Alaska.

Red mud residue from Bayer process treatment of Jamaican bauxite was dewatered in batch and in continuous centrifuges. Solids content of the residue was increased from its original value of 20 to 25 percent to about 40 percent by centrifuging. Clear effluent amounting to approximately 40 percent of the slurry liquid was recovered containing dissolved alumina and soda values for potential recycle to the alumina plant" Addition of a chemical flocculant to the centrifuge increased capacity by about 35 percent. Manufacturer's estimate of large-scale equipment requirements, based on data collected in this investigation, was that a proposed installation for dewatering 16,000 tons per day of Jamaican red mud would require twenty-two 24-by 60-inch solid-bowl-type centrifuges. Cost analysis of a proposed installation, based on a Jamaican red mud tonnage of 16,000 per day, is included also.

Allis Mineral Systems' GRATE-CAR agglomeration/induration/reduction process is currently being operated to process ilmenite at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS in Tyssedal, Norway. In this process, balled ilmenite concentrate is fed to a traveling grate where pellets are dried and preheated, using fully oxidized kiln exhaust gas. Hot preheated, semi-indurated pellets are fed directly to a ported kiln where reduction of the ilmenite's iron oxide fraction occurs in the presence of lump coal. The reduced pellet sand coal char are discharged from the kiln to an indirect rotary drum cooler. Cooled pellets and char are screened and magnetically separated prior to their further processing in a downstream smelting operation. The pellets are melted and the titanium dioxide and iron are separated. Operation commenced in late 1986.
