The shortage of freshwater has been a major challenge for mineral flotation in arid areas. When using high salinity water, certain electrolytes are detrimental to flotation while others can improve the flotability of minerals. In this paper, the flotation behaviors and contact angles of pyrite in both Milli-Q water and high salinity water were investigated using different collectors at various pH levels. Results show that the thionocarbamate has a less affinity to pyrite in different solutions under mildly alkaline conditions as compared with potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and N-isopropoxypropyl-N’-ethoxycarbonyl thiourea (iPOPECTU). At high pH levels, the slime coating on pyrite surfaces, which is caused by colloidal precipitates of magnesium and calcium ions in seawater, was confirmed by SEM, EDX and in-situ zeta potential measurement. The slime coating of colloidal precipitates on mineral surfaces led to low recovery of pyrite at high pH levels. The study of flotation behavior of pyrite in high salinity water improves our fundamental understanding of mineral flotation in seawater.

"The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered more than 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the United States. The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Co. (Fig. 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 t/day (800 stpd) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut-and-fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas.This article describes the methods that Hecla Mining Co. has employed during the past 50 years to combat these issues, with emphasis on the current efforts to implement continuous, mechanical mining with automated or teleremote operation and to introduce electric and battery-powered equipment to minimize refrigeration and ventilation requirements for the removal of DPMs.Geology and in situ stressThe host rock mass is an extremely thick sedimentary sequence (the Belt Series) that has been tilted vertically by mountain building. The rock mass in the current section of the mine consists of weak, heavily foliated argillites and stronger, bedded silty-argillites termed siltite. The vertical veins (80° to 85° dip) are parallel to the foliation with an approximate width of around 3 m (10 ft). There are two regional, vertical faults that parallel the vein; one forming the hangingwall of the orebody and one approximately 90 m (300 ft) in the footwall. Additionally, there are several thin, rough northdipping faults that occur in the footwall of the vein which terminate on the major vertical faults.Both the argillite and vein package rock have moderate strength, with uniaxial compressive strength averaging about 100 MPa (14,700 psi with a range from about 70 to 125 MPa), and are moderately abrasive, with CERCHAR abrasivity index of 2 to 3. The major in situ stress is horizontal and oriented in a northwest direction with magnitude about 1.5 times the vertical stress. Consequently, the Lucky Friday stress magnitude at depth is analogous to significantly deeper South African gold operations."

"An integrated nickel flash smelter is operated with Peirce-Smith converters at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. To improve the partitioning of arsenic between slag waste and matte product, an option to modify the slag–matte chemistry by addition of CaO was analysed. A combination of plant sample analysis, high-temperature laboratory experiments and thermodynamic modeling was carried out to evaluate the process options. The high-temperature experiments involved the re-equilibration of industrial matte-slag samples at 1225 °C and P(SO2) = 0.12 atm, rapid quenching in water, and direct measurement of phase compositions using electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LAICPMS). A private thermodynamic database for nickel sulfide smelting and converting was used together with the FactSage thermochemical software package to assist in the analysis of the distribution of elements between slag and matte as a function of CaO addition. The thermodynamic predictions combined with experimental data obtained in this study can be used to characterise the effect of CaO fluxing on the slag–matte thermochemistry during the nickel sulfide converting.INTRODUCTION At the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter (KNS), nickel sulfide concentrate is processed in an Outotec-type flash furnace to produce nickel matte containing +47 wt% Ni. Separation of nickel matte and waste slag from the flash smelting is enhanced through settling in the electric arc -heated zone attached to the flash furnace. The flash furnace matte is further processed in a Peirce-Smith converter to produce Ni-rich matte containing +66 wt% Ni (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011). Iron silicate-based slag is used in the converting process at KNS. Most of the arsenic is contained in the final matte and very little of the arsenic partitions into the slag. Previous work by Font et al (Font, Hino, & Itagaki, 2003) shows that the distribution ratio of arsenic between calcium ferrite slag and nickel-matte (LAsslag/matte) is significantly higher than that between iron silicate slag and nickel-matte, where LAsslag/matte = (wt pct As in slag)/{wt pct As in matte} (1)"

The history and experience of early companies in the Islands is illustrated by the typical transactions of Trans-Western from 1959 to date. Trans-Western had entered into farmout agreements with companies strong enough to carry out at least the required minimum exploratory work and then such development as might be warranted. The farmee companies were required to make deposits to guarantee work performance during the first period of validity, i.e. the first 3 years of the 12-year life of the permits, and at the rate of 5 cents per acre. At that time, a good deal of geology was available, as a result of extensive exploration that had been carried on by the Geological Survey of Canada and other geological enterprises, with field parties travelling over and camping on all of those Islands. Trans-Western's farmees then selected, from Trans-Western's priority on 13.5 million acres, what they believed were the lands most prospective of producing large oil and gas discoveries, and, having the right to trim off acreage which they considered less prospective, thereby reducing the acreage of Trans-Western and its farmees to in excess of 5.5 million acres. The farmees then commenced a 3-year program carrying out geological exploration to the required minimum of 5 cents per acre, and with some permanent and many mobile camps.

The Goonyella Riverside Mine is located 30 km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland, Australia. Recent mining activities have exposed the north–south striking Kenya and Zimbabwe thrust Faults. These faults vertically offset coal seams by up to 25 m and locally thicken coal packages through imbrication of coal seams. The presence of back-thrusts add to the geotechnical complexity of maintaining highwall stability. The Kenya and Zimbabwe Faults have provided multiple challenges to the mining operation, with an unplanned additional 240 kt of coal tonnes being mined from imbrication of coals seams or from the refinement to local scale geological models. These additional coal tonnes have been either identified during the mining of the coal seam or just prior to overburden removal above the coal seam. These faults can also negatively impacted highwall stability with highwall failures, lowering the overall slope angle for pit designs and increasing stand-off distances for hazardous highwall conditions. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are used to scan exposed highwalls and enable geological mapping via high-quality 3D images. Measure while drill data from drill and blast rigs can provide local-scale intersections of the faults and coal seams. Mine Geologists utilise these and other data sets to create localised geological models refined position of the fault planes and coal seams. These models are utilised by relevant mine site teams to ensure the safe and efficient mining of coal around these faults.

The mining regulations of all 50 States were reviewed by the Bureau of Mines, and those parts pertaining to the use of internal combustion (IC) engines (particularly diesel engines) in underground mines or confined spaces were extracted. Also extracted were subjects associated with the use of IC engines; for example, storage and handling of flammable liquids, maintenance, and ventilation requirements. As the laws now stand, 29 States have specific regulations that affect the operation of diesel engines in underground coal and/or metal and nonmetal mines. The other States have no regulations because either they have no mining activities or they defer to Federal regulations. Six states have regulations expressly prohibiting the use of diesels in underground coal mines. Specific contacts (addresses and phone numbers) precede each State's regulations to facilitate inquiries about regulation revisions and interpretation.

The expansion in gold production in the Carlin 'Trend over the last few years has been one of staggering proportion. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the Mine Engineering group at Newmont Gold. This paper discusses the organizational changes implemented to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems and how the Newmont Gold Mine Engineering group dealt with these problems. Specially developed computer software and their applications will be explained. Improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves, and in scheduling the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities, as well as ore control procedures are presented. Current mine engineering practices are discussed.

Labrador City is located in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland-Labrador, approximately 965 kilometers north-east of Montreal. The mine and beneficiation complex of the Iron Ore Company of Canada, known as the Carol Project, is situated 535 metres above sea level in a climatic region characterized by cold winters and short, cool summers. History The iron Ore Company of Canada commenced work in the area in 1949, however, it was not until 1958 that the decision was made to proceed with mining operations. The ore body consists of Specular Hematite (Fe203) and Magnetite (Fe304) with small quantities of Limonite and Geothite. The average grade of the ore bodies is 39% iron.

In the magnetite iron ore pelletization process, oxidation of magnetite followed by sintering of the oxidized magnetite (hematite) is desirable. Optimum preheating time & temperature and roasting time & temperature is required to get the desired properties of the pellets with magnetite, hematite, and hematite–magnetite blend. In order to utilize the magnetite resources in a current induration furnace, which is designed for hematite resources, detailed pelletization studies have been carried out to optimize the firing cycle for magnetite concentrate as well as magnetite with hematite concentrate. Under optimum conditions, such as preheating temperature 1000–1150 °C, preheating time 10 min, roasting temperature 1250 °C and roasting time 7.5 min, the cold compression strength (CCS) of magnetite roasted pellets was 325 kg/p, and this was due to recrystallization of secondary hematite particles, and development of the strong slag bond between primary and secondary hematite particles. The strength of hematite concentrate pellets was 260 kg/p. From laboratory studies, it was found that without disturbing the induration furnace firing cycle, which is designed for hematite ore ~5%, magnetite concentrate can be used along with hematite concentrate in pellet blend and the strength of the pellets was 270 kg/p. As the magnetite concentrate increases in the blend beyond 5%, the preheating zone residence time should be increased or a supply of extra oxygen is required. Laboratory as well as plant investigation has shown that the addition of magnetite to the hematite mix blend improved the strength of the pellets compared to hematite pellet alone.

Explosive demolition typically utilizes cutting charges to sever columns, detonating cord to time charges and provide an initiation path, and dynamite as a kicker charge. The kicker charges of dynamite are used to “move” columns out of alignment, causing collapse. Demolition projects involving dynamite can pose significant health and safety risks to workers and the public. Nitroglycerin in dynamite can cause dizziness, fainting, and other health problems. Moreover, dynamite placed directly on columns can result in fragmentation and cutoffs, preventing other charges from being initiated and resulting in incomplete demolition. Fragmentation can occur from columns and travel significant distances from the initiation point, sometimes reaching hundreds of meters away. This fragmentation can pose serious dangers to anyone in the vicinity, including workers and members of the public, as the debris can cause severe injuries and property damage. The force and velocity of the fragmented material can be unpredictable and difficult to control, making it important to take proper safety precautions and consider alternative demolition methods that minimize the risk of fragmentation. Previous work concluded that casing charges in water showed that a reduced dynamite charge mass could still successfully kick the charge out of alignment. This study aims to investigate the use of Pentolite boosters in water-cased charges as a safer alternative to dynamite-based demolition. The research involved testing various amounts of dynamite and pentolite boosters in water to compare their effectiveness in moving a hanging W-beam, which swung freely like a ballistic pendulum. Water-cased charges consistently move the column at a higher velocity than the traditional dynamite charge placed directly on the column. The method of water-casing increased the area of impact and impulse felt by the column, improving demolition efficiency when compared to traditional demolition methods as found in previous studies. Pentolite water-cased charges moved the column at 7.8 meters/second (m/s) while the dynamite water charge moved the column at 5.9 m/s. The increased strength and explosive properties of the pentolite contributed to this increase in velocity. This study showed that it is feasible to remove dynamite from demolition projects by utilizing pentolite boosters and that when considering safety, explosive properties, and effectiveness, pentolite boosters can be cost effective as well.

In accordance with provisions of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, the Bureau of Mines surveyed the chromite occurrences in California. The Seiad Creek deposit afforded excellent opportunity for developing reserves that could be used by the nation in case of critical shortages of the mineral. Subsequently an exploration and development program was undertaken in April 1941, which was concluded in October of the same year. Work included road construction, diamond drilling, drifting and crosscutting, surface trenching, and sampling.

Computers are a valuable tool to the aggregate industry and should not be overlooked. The selection of proper mechanical components is necessary. Merely the addition of a computer to operate a mechanical system will not guarantee that the system will work. Material delivery by rail or truck for stock-piling and intra-plant material transfer can be accurately supervised by automation with simplified controls for the layman to use. There are mechanical problems that occur in material blending and load-out systems when such a system is automated. Such things as material flow, bridging, stockpiling methods, overloading of equipment and safety must be considered. How these problems can be overcome by proper selection of compatible mechanical and computer equipment will be discussed. Also, there are many individual material circuits in a plant that can be computerized at a nominal cost. This type of computer installation will not necessarily result in increased production, but it will produce greater efficiency in manpower. These small computers, binary counters, memory circuits and other devices and their application to the aggregate industry will also be presented. A careful evaluation of the mechanical and computer inter-relationship by someone understanding both "Rocks and Electronics" is essential to proper handling of material by computers. Computers for the mining industry may be either digital or analog computers. Unless the computer is to control some type of chemical process, such as a cement plant, the, analog computer is not required and the digital computer' will be quite adequate and less expensive.

India is endowed with a reasonably large reserve of chrome ore, amounting to about 100 million tons in different grades and is one of the leading producers of ore/concentrate along with South Africa, Kazakhstan and others. Chromite production in India has registered a 10 times increase during the last 30 years. Till late 1940s, the practice was to mine the high-grade ore for making ferrochrome and charge chrome and export the same leaving the low and medium grade ores stacked around the mine as waste material. This practice was continued for quite some time till the increase in world wide de-mand of chromite initiated an increase in production of chromite ore in India and the aspects of ?economy of operation? and ?conservation of mineral? dawned on the producers and associated authorities. Recovery of chrome values from low and medium grade ore was initiated to produce high-grade saleable concentrate. Suitable legislation was made by Government of India to induce and provide incentives to the operators to do so. First large scale chromite beneficiation plant in India was commissioned about three decades back at Byrapore in the Southern state of Karnataka. The ore, rather simple in nature and relatively free from clay, was obtained from underground. The processing consequently was simple washing and wet tabling. Further more, some test work, on the samples from eastern coast particularly from Orissa, was carried out at an internationally reputed laboratory by a large private operator and the plant was set up. This consisted of a combination of crushing-grinding-de-sliming-classification followed by concentration in multi stage spiral concentrators and shaking table. The plant was commissioned and operated successfully. Soon a state owned company followed suit on the basis of test work carried out in a well equipped Indian laboratory. The plant worked satisfactorily after some initial teething trouble and the company plans to double the existing plant capacity by installing balancing facilities. This development prompted a number of operators, including industry leaders to join the fray and the chrome ore processing industry flourished in India. More and more operators are now in the process of adding capacities to their existing plants. This paper attempts to chart the evolution of chrome ore beneficiation industry in India through a case study with reference to an existing plant. The process technology adopted and modified to suit the altered requirements as well as the future trends are outlined.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1937, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6942.3/ Information Circular 7007,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved. Burin', the calendar year 1937. The present list includes most of the material liven in these two publications, as well as approvals that have been issued up to January l, 1940. Some equipment formerly listed has been omitted because it has become obsolete or is no longer actively marketed. The list now includes electrically-operated air compressors, coal drills, loading machines and conveyors, mining machine, mine ones, rock-dusting machines, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives and storage-battery power trucks, mine telephones, junction boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lens, flashlights, methane detectors, and single and multiple-shot blasting units. The appendix at the end of this circular lists trailing, cables that have passed tests prescribed by Schedule 2D. When equipment passes the inspections and tests prescribed by the United Status Department of the interior, Bureau of Mines, in published "schedules" or standards, it is formally approved as "permissible" for use in gassy mines, and the manufacturer is then permitted to mark it with an approval plate that identifies it as having been approved by the Bureau. In the Bayer process, control of alumina trihydrate particle size, oxalate stability and morphology and foaming is crucial for improving the yield and quality of alumina trihydrate. One way to economically achieve such control is to employ specifically developed chemical additives, termed, crystal growth modifiers (CGM?s). In this paper, the mechanism of action and practical application of CGM?s in the Bayer process are summarized. The application of CGM additives allows for both enhanced agglomeration and secondary nucleation control, and hence coarsening of the particles. Current research efforts have utilized the information gained from mechanistic studies to enhance the performance of CGM products. It was demonstrated in both laboratory tests and industrial operations that the newly developed CGM formulations have a range of properties with enhanced performance, compared to the current commercial products.

"Several grinding mill dynamic simulators have been developed in the last half-century. However, complete circuit simulations are mainly limited to academic investigations, and on-site applications for advanced control or real-time optimization are scarce. One particular issue that has certainly curbed a more widespread use is the time and efforts required for model calibration. This paper illustrates this challenge and presents a calibration method based on dynamic simulation using industrial data and laboratory testwork. The simulator models discussed originate from the work of Austin and Luckie (1972) for grinding mills, and Plitt (1976) for hydrocyclones. A two-stage approach based on a least squares minimization allows determining calibration parameters values. Firstly, laboratory testwork are required for characterizing breakage coefficients of the ore. Secondly, step change responses and their simulation— effect of ore and water feed rates on output flow rates and size distributions—allows identifying transport/mixing conditions. Simulation results are in agreement with actual process responses to variations of feed conditions obtained from a plant survey.INTRODUCTIONDynamic models for grinding circuits has been intensively studied since the 1970's notably by Austin and Luckie (1972b), Klimpel and Austin (1984), Rogovin and Hogg (1988), Napier-Munn et al. (1996), Liu and Spencer (2004), and King (2012) among others. The resulting models primarily serve in simulation applications for process equipment sizing, which incidentally also helps developing a better understanding of comminution operations. An obstacle curbing a more widespread and targeted use of grinding simulation for process control and optimization purposes is the time and efforts required for dynamic model calibration. It remains a cumbersome task that is typically not well detailed in technical papers. This could explain why dynamic process simulators are mainly confined to academic applications."

Since the completion of the pelletizing plant, additional expansions to both the pellet plant and concentrator have taken place in 1967 and 1973. Today, the Carol Project has the capacity to produce 20 million tonnes of concentrate from which 10.5 million tonnes of pellets can be produced.The period 1980-85 spans a period of energy crisis, world-wide recession, and a consequent re-structuring of the North American steel industry as it struggles to survive in an arena of excess world steel making capacity, government subsidized industries, and the increasing competition from overseas and from developing countries.The media headlines over the past few years echo the woes of the industry and the strategy plans for survival of the fittest. "The new east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bridge features a single tower self-anchored suspension (SAS) bridge. During construction of the SAS bridge, a temporary bridge was used to support the box girders until erection of suspension cables was completed. The transfer of deck load from the temporary bridge to the suspension cables was achieved in November 2012 and the SAS bridge has become the largest of its kind in the world. The new bridge will be in service in Fall 2013.Large diameter driven steel pipe piles were used for the temporary bridge foundations at Towers D, F and G located in San Francisco Bay. At Tower D, the large diameter steel pipe piles were driven through thin overburden into bedrock using a large Menck MHU500T hammer with a rated energy of 550 kJ. As there was no precedence in driving open-ended pipe piles into the Franciscan Formation bedrock, challenges were faced with uncertainties in drivability, driving stresses, pile embedment in bedrock and pile capacity. These uncertainties were addressed by incorporating additional measures into the pile design, and by the use of dynamic pile monitoring during initial driving and re-strike. Pile relaxation was observed during pile installation.At Towers F and G, setup effect was a key issue for the piles driven into the deep soft marine sediments. Drivability analyses were conducted to predict pile run, driving stresses, selection of hammer and refusal criteria. The piles were dynamically monitored during driving to estimate pile capacities. Due to the set-up effect in the Bay Mud, the piles gained up to 3.3 times the initial capacity during the re-strike and were in excess of the design capacity.This paper presents details of the design, construction, testing and performance of the driven pipe piles at temporary Towers D, F and G. Settlement data of the temporary tower foundations while in service confirmed the satisfactory performance of the pile foundations.INTRODUCTIONThe new east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge features a single tower self-anchored suspension (SAS) bridge, the largest of its kind in the world. The new east span replaces the existing double-deck steel bridge built in the mid-thirties. A span of the existing bridge had collapsed during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake but was repaired. Construction of the new east span commenced in 2008 and is expected to be completed for the Labour Day opening in 2013. Figure 1 shows a schematic (looking north) of the new bridge with its 160 m high main tower T1 in the middle, and Piers W2 and E2 at the west and east ends, respectively. The west and east spans of the SAS bridge are 180 m and 385 m, respectively.During construction of the SAS bridge, a temporary bridge, complete with towers and trusses, was used to support the box girders of the new permanent bridge until the loads from the box girders were transferred through suspension cables to the permanent bridge. The transfer of deck load from the temporary bridge to the main cable was completed in November 2012."
