Increased Cu grades due to chalcopyrite-rich ore from The Doe Run Company's new Casteel Mine prompted a program to increase Cu recovery. Preliminary tests indicated that prohibitive quantities of FeS2 float with chalcopyrite. Point counting of mill stream samples showed that locking was not a major problem, although grinding to finer particle size enhanced the floatability of both chalcopyrite and marcasite. Backscattered electron images and microprobe analyses of FeSz minerals revealed the presence of Pb which appears to occur as solid solution in marcasite, and as a sub-micron particulate Pb phase in pyrite.

TO assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere. The Fad shaft of the Eureka Corp. is on Ruby Hill, 1 1/2 miles west of Eureka, Nev. The shaft was completed at a depth of 2465 ft in November 1947 at a site adjacent to the downfaulted block in which the ore was found. As the drift on the 2250 level progressed toward the ore zone, a large flow of water was encountered after the Martin fault was intersected. This flow exceeded the installed pump capacity, and an unsuccessful attempt to recover the shaft and the 2250 level was made in 1948.1, 2 Geology and Hydrology: The complex structure of Ruby Hill is that of an anticline broken first by thrust faulting and later by normal faults. The present orebody comprises several mineralized zones within a block of the Eldorado limestone of middle Cambrian age which was downfaulted 1400 to 1600 ft, and it may be related to a similar body mined at a higher level south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the depth of the largest zone of ore the block is roughly rectangular in shape, about 1000 ft wide and 1500 ft long, and dips about 30" NE, see Fig. 1. It is apparently bounded on the south by the Ruby Hill fault, on the east by the Jackson fault, on the north by the Martin fault, and the west by the Bowman fault. Within the block, but between the Ruby Hill and the Martin faults, are the Office and Adams Hills faults; west of the block and the Bowman fault are the Albion and Spring Valley faults. There are many conflicting reports concerning the water-yielding characteristics of the Eldorado limestone and the condition of the fault zones, that is, whether they are open or tight. However, the diamond-drill records indicate that open spaces as much as 2 or 3 ft across were encountered, and considerable cementing and lining of holes was necessary to maintain circulation of drilling fluid. There is also evidence that the Eldorado limestone was cavernous where it was mined in the early days south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the site of the Fad shaft the formations encountered from the surface down included the Pogonip limestone, Dunderberg shale, Hamburg limestone, and Secret Canyon shale. These formations did not yield large quantities of water to the shaft. The Pogonip limestone, which appears to be permeable and might yield water elsewhere, is above the water table in the vicinity of the shaft. The Secret Canyon shale, immediately overlying the Eldorado in some places but in most places separated from it by the Geddes limestone,3 is apparently tight and does not transmit water. During the 30-day test period the shale briefly confined the water in the underlying formations so that artesian conditions were observed in drillholes E and F, which are cased into the Eldorado limestone, whereas unconfined conditions were observed in drillholes B, C, and D, which were open to the shale. The Geddes limestone, which normally lies between the Secret Canyon shale and the Eldorado limestone, was not encountered in the Fad shaft. The Geddes, a flaggy, fractured limestone, is reported capable of yielding large volumes of water. Water stored in the interstices of this thin-bedded limestone within the Ruby Hill fault zone on the 1200 level of the Locan shaft drowned the pumps in 1923 when the Richmond-Eureka Mining Co. attempted to explore the area along the fault. Eldorado limestone was not encountered in the Fad shaft. In the ore-block area the Eldorado limestone was not entirely offset from other water-yielding formations by movement along the Bowman fault; therefore it may be hydraulically connected with the other formations. Adjacent to the Ruby Hill, Jackson, and Martin faults, the Eldorado lies in contact with other possible water-yielding formations. One of these, the Prospect Mountain quartzite, is separated from the Eldorado by thin, sheared, and broken beds of the Geddes within the Ruby Hill fault zone. A limited examination by the author of the Prospect Mountain quartzite in the Richmond mine at a higher level and south of the Ruby Hill fault indicates that the quartzite is poorly permeable. The monzonite mass south of the quartzite would be a further barrier to the flow of water. The poor permeability of this area is substantiated by records of levels at which water was encountered south of the Ruby Hill fault. In view of the normally low rate of ground-water recharge, if this desert area had been permeable, water levels could not have been maintained at altitudes of many hundred feet above the present water table west and north of Ruby Hill. Thus the ore-bearing block of Eldorado limestone is in contact with possible water-yielding rocks on at least two sides, and if the fault zones are possible conduits for water circulation the geologic and hydrologic conditions are suitable for the infinite-aquifer type of analysis as used and modified here. Calcium ferrite slags are often associated with Professor Yazawa due to his pioneering work on the thermodynamics of this type of melts. Over the past years CSIRO has invested some effort in studying physico-chemical properties of such melts to fill in some gaps in our knowledge and explore opportunities for application of the understanding developed. These investigations cover thermodynamics, transport properties of calcium ferrite based slags, as well as the kinetics of reactions of such slags with refractories. The present paper provides an overview of some of these studies and highlights some of the interesting behavior of such melts, The oxidation state of copper and arsenic in calcium ferrite based slags are predominantly Cu+ and As3+, respectively, at oxygen potentials below 10-7 atm. The concentration of CU2+ in such slags becomes significant at oxygen potentials of greater than 10-7 atm at 1300 °C. The activities of CuO0.5 and AsO1.5 in calcium ferrite slags show strong deviations from the Raoultian Law, while that of CoO is very close to ideal behaviour with respect to pure solid CoO. Addition of SiO2 to calcium ferrite slags can have significant effects on the activities of FeO and Fe2O3 and hence the stability of magnetite phase. Transfer of oxygen in calcium ferrite slags is fast with diffusivity of 2x 103 cm2/s at 1350 °C and activation energy of 16 kcal/mol. Presence of solid phases, such as magnetite, has pronounced effect on the viscosity of calcium ferrite slags. The observed dependence on solid loading and shear rate indicates deviation from Newtonian behaviour. The interfacial tension between copper mattes and calcium ferrite slags is strongly dependent on the matte grade, with the determined values being much lower than the corresponding ones for interfacial tension between similar mattes and iron silicate slags. MgO, Cr2O3 and MgCr2O4 have low solubility in calcium ferrite slags and their solubility increases with increasing copper oxide content of the slag at 1300°C. The oxidation state of the slag has strong effects on phase transformation, dissolution rate and disintegration of refractories in calcium ferrite slags. Spirals, the most common equipment for the separation of heavy minerals such as chromite, are greatly affected by size distribution and the liberation degree (hence the specific gravity and size) of the feed particles. In this study, the efficiency of spirals in separation of low-grade chromite particles has been investigated by studying the distribution of grade, size distribution and liberation degree of feed, concentrate, and tailings of spiral. For this purpose, mass balance constraints were applied to the spiral-containing chromite processing circuit. Afterwards, the grade variations and size distributions have been investigated. According to the results, when the feed to the spiral has a larger size distribution, the enrichment ratio of the feed is 1.32 and, with the smaller feed size, this value has increased to 1.99. When the spiral feed has a larger size distribution and higher specific gravity, the recovery of chromite increases with increasing particle size up to 250 microns, and then with increasing particle size, recovery decreases with a relatively steep slope. Evaluation of spiral efficiency with respect to particle liberation degree has also shown that despite the high degree of liberation of spiral feed in size fractions smaller than 75 microns (88.9%), the liberation degree of spiral concentrate and tail in this faction is equal to and less than that of feed, which can indicate poor spiral performance in these size fractions.

IN ingots of silicon-killed carbon steel made without addition of - aluminum, transparent spherical or nearly spherical inclusions, up to about 0.15-mm diameter, are generally present. They may be glassy or crystallized, wholly or partially. In steels of high carbon contents they consist of silica,4,12 in steels of lower carbon contents arid, in consequence, higher oxygen contents, of iron-manganese-silicate with higher iron and manganese contents the lower the carbon content. Small silicate inclusions, about 0.01 mm or smaller, may occur, just as sulphide inclusions do, in portions that have been the last or nearly the last to freeze,10,12,17 this location being verified by primary etching.10 Hence, it may be concluded that they have separated from liquid steel that has become enriched in oxygen through segregation during freezing. Silicate inclusions with a diameter larger than about 0.02 mm appear, at least in ingots of moderate size, to be distributed at random in relation to the primary structure and therefore may be assumed to have existed as droplets in the liquid steel before freezing started at the point in question. The average size of such large inclusions has been found to increase toward the axis17 and their amount to increase from the top downward in the axial region .2,10 It has been assumed that this accumulation is a result of the droplets being brought down by the slowly settling metal crystals.2 It has been suggested that large silicate inclusions generally form,6 or may form," by coagulation of smaller ones, or by small drops being caught by larger ones during the rising of the latter.9 The occasional occurrence of a large inclusion surrounded by a swarm of small ones has been taken as a proof of this mechanism but, as suggested later, may be explained in another way. It has been pointed out that an inclusion droplet in the liquid steel may grow at the expense of an adjacent one, which implies diffusion of soluble inclusion-forming elements in the liquid steel.15 Further, it has been pointed out that, on cooling in ladle or mold, the metal-silicate equilibrium is displaced in the direction of separation of silicate. Thus inclusions may grow in size and amount.2,3,8,12,13,17,19,20 The exposure of the liquid steel to the oxygen of the air during tapping and pouring, and the consequent reaction, has been mentioned as a source of the formation of inclusions19,20 but this possibility has not received particular attention. Further, the admixture of furnace slag during tapping' or of refractory material from various sources1,20 has been considered. The inclusions due to the latter may be recognized, however, through their resistance to hydrofluoric acid, imparted by the alumina content. In anticipation of requests by industry to develop this resource, the Minnesota Department Of Natural Resources has developed a computerized resource inventory and analysis system, MINESITE This extensive database is available to regulatory agencies as they evaluate mining proposals as required by law. The Resource Analysis phase of the project allows state mining policy decisions to be evaluated in terms of long-range effects on Minnesota's mining industry and environmental and land use impacts. The analysis also allows for comparison of proposed mine facility sites to a representative range of sites in terms of engineering, site characteristics, and land use and environmental impacts.

The extraction of nickel from Serbian and Western Australian lateritic ore by sulphuric pressure acid leaching (PAL) has been studied. The following parameters were tested: stirring rate, acid to ore ratio, reaction time, pressure and temperature. These studies were performed with ore samples from the Rudjinci, Serbia and Silcrete, Australia, both belonging to the laterite-silicate group of deposits. An increase of the reaction temperature and the stirring speed at a fixed acid/ore ratio showed a positive influence on nickel extraction. The decrease of the oxidation potential with time correlated with the increase in Fe(II) in solution and nickel extraction as the reaction went to completion for both ores. The target values of 95 % Ni extraction and 60 % Co extraction were attained in 5 min at 250°C for the Serbian silicate ore, at an agitation rate of 1500 rpm, 10 % solids, and acid/ore ratio of 0.40. Under similar conditions only 60 % Ni, but 69 % Co could be extracted from the Australian Silcrcte ore due to different mineralogy. The nickel extraction was shown follow a diffusion-controlled reaction model.

"Ground control research in underground coal mines has been ongoing for over 50 years. One of the most problematic issues in underground coal mines is roof failures associated with weak shale. This paper will present a historical narrative on the research the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has conducted in relation to rock mechanics and shale. This paper begins by first discussing how shale is classified in relation to coal mining. Characterizing and planning for weak roof sequences is an important step in developing an engineering solution to prevent roof failures. Next, the failure mechanics associated with the weak characteristics of shale will be discussed. Understanding these failure mechanics also aids in applying the correct engineering solutions. The various solutions that have been implemented in the underground coal mining industry to control the different modes of failure will be summarized. Finally, a discussion on current and future research relating to rock mechanics and shale is presented. The overall goal of the paper is to share the collective ground control experience of controlling roof structures dominated by shale rock in underground coal mining.INTRODUCTIONThe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), formerly the United States Bureau of Mines, has been conducting research on ground control safety for over 50 years. The overall objective of the research is to reduce underground mining injuries and fatalities by characterizing roof conditions, improving roof support performance and application, and optimizing pillar design and mine layout. Underground mining has one of the highest fatal injury rates of any industry in the United States—more than five times the national average compared to other industries (CDC, 2012). Roof fall injuries can be severe, resulting in lacerations, bone fractures, amputations, and death. Non-injury roof falls can also be problematic, resulting in lost production, delays, blockage of primary escape routes, disruption to ventilation, and hazardous rehabilitation conditions.Coal mining is increasingly subject to more adverse geological conditions. Weak roof can be found in all coal mining regions in the United States, but there are a few geographically isolated areas with higher roof fall rates contributed to by particularly poor roof conditions, as represented in Figure 1. This figure shows that when non-injury roof fall rates are normalized to production, the Illinois Basin and Central/Northern Appalachia regions have the highest rates. These isolated regions have inherently weak roof even before mining has occurred, and this roof is easily damaged during the mining process. The weak roof in these regions consists primarily of shale. Shale can be troublesome in underground coal mining because it can appear massive but easily splits along bedding planes and is often moisture-sensitive."

"Sampling is the process of taking a small portion of an article such that the consistency of the portion shall be representative of the whole," (Baxter and Parks, 1939)."An orebody is a mixture of minerals in proportions that vary in different parts of the mass. As a consequence, the proportion of contained metals also varies from place to place. Therefore, a single sample taken in any particular place would not contain the same proportion of metals as does the orebody as a whole except by a highly improbable coincidence."The probable error, which would be very large if only one sample were taken, decreases with the number of samples, but it never disappears completely unless the samples are so numerous and so large that their aggregate is equal to the orebody itself, in which case the orebody would be completely used up in the process of sampling."Since carrying sampling to such an extreme would defeat its own purpose, some probable error is always present in actual cases and the practical objective is to reduce this probable error to allowable limits. This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive." (McKinstry, et al., 1948).In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not only on the number of samples but also on their proper distribution throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. Therefore, it is important to select the places in such a way that all parts of the orebody will be represented."

First, a classification of the various primary sources of feed materials for the production of cobalt is presented from a mineralogical point of view : sulfides, arsenides, sulfo-arsenides and oxide minerals. Each of these cate- gories will be characterized by its behaviour towards concentration methods, taking account of the presence of the associated minerals of other metals and of the nature of the gangue minerals. Then, for each category of cobalt bea- ring ores, typical flowsheets of treatment will be presented and discussed and the characteristics of the cobalt concentrates produced will be under- lined having in view their subsequent processing by pyro - and (or) hydrome- tallurgical methods.

With the scarcity of fresh potable water on mining sites, particularly those in arid and remote regions, the use of sea water is being contemplated and actually used at a number of mineral concentrators worldwide. The use of sea water, with its associated high dissolved solids content and ionic strength will affect all aspects of processing (e.g. frothing and froth stability, buffering capacity for pH control, solubility of minerals and corrosion of media and equipment). Selective depression of pyrite is more difficult in sea water due to the increased lime addition to achieve a high pH. This results in a reduction in molybdenite recovery. The use of grinding media with various chromium contents and its effect on subsequent Cu and Mo flotation has been investigated in the current study, with both grinding and flotation testing conducted in artificial sea water. Pulp chemistry (pH, Eh and DO) have been logged during grinding, and flotation testing was conducted on subsequent slurries. The flotation results show that the system is remarkably robust and able to cope with wide ranges of pulp chemistry parameters. SINCE the publication of the paper of Mr. Scholz, The Effect of Humidity on Mine-Explosions,' I have undertaken a study of the meager available data of barometric and temperature conditions it times of mine-explosions, and have arranged these data in a manner which may be of interest to other students of mine-explosions. This study covers the period from 1898 to 1909, during which an ever-increasing percentage of collieries has been ventilated by fans giving air-currents of high efficiency. Previous to 1898 this percentage was smaller than at any time since. The vari¬ous States have become, from time to time, more exacting in their demands upon poorly-ventilated mines. This general im¬provement in ventilation throughout the Appalachian field has undoubtedly brought about a condition which is annually the cause; .or a very important attendant, of the high percentage of fatalities in mine-explosions, through the daily passage of from hundreds to thousands of gallons of water, invisibly suspended in the air, carried out of the mines by the ventilating-currents during the existence of certain temperature- and humidity-conditions. There is a wide-spread opinion that these conditions exist from November 1 to March 31; but it is more likely that they have a much wider range, which varies from year to year. Certain years show an increase or decrease of rain-fall from the mean ; the daily temperature may fall far below or rise far above the mean established by a record of a period of years; and the daily humidity varies likewise. The completion of the Hot Strip Mill at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd., makes possible the production of steel plates and wide strip of a quality and in quantities not possible previously in Australia, and will also enable the production of tinplate to be undertaken in this country.The site chosen for the mill was a mud fiat underlain by a hard stone bottom at 5, to 801 feet below the surface; and a total area of one hundred acres was reclaimed to a level of 20 feet above the original surface.Three adjoining buildings were constructed to house the slab receiving yard, mill equipment and electric drive, together with the plate finishing line.After slabs have been heated to 2250°F at a rate of 90 tons per hour, they are transferred to the vertical scale breaker which is the first stand in the hot roughing mill. Here the primary furnace scale is first cracked and then blasted off by high velocity water descaling sprays.The next stand is the horizontal scale l;Jreaker, where any remaining primary scale is broken and then blasted off. After descaling, the slabs pass to the broadside mill, where short slabs are turned and rolled on broad side for wide plate.The next step is a slab squeezer which squares up the edges after broadsiding ready for the reversing mill. This is the finishing stand for plate and the last roughing stand for strip, which then passes to the finishing mill.The hot strip finishing mill consists of six stands with a maximum finishing speed of 2,230 feet per minute. The Société Nationale Industriel et Minière (SNIM) is expanding its ore and concentrate production capacity in Mauritania, West Africa. This government-controlled mining company has been in production since 1963 and currently exports some 12 Mt/a.SNIM is presently doubling its magnetite concentrate production at the Guelb el Rhein mine. An existing processing line will have a second parallel production line of 4 Mt/a added. The mine is located some 600 km inland from the Atlantic coast in the heart of the Sahara Desert.The metallurgy of the ore is reasonably straightforward. It is a magnetite banded iron formation that is amenable to magnetic separation. While the existing plant uses semi-autogenous grinding and dry magnetic separation, the new processing line will use HPGRs, dry magnetic separation, and a wet milling and magnetic separation circuit for treating middlings.The process choices refl ect the scarcity of water in the region, the high cost of locally generated power and the operating experience and preferences of SNIM. Dust control in the desert environment has been a particular challenge.The metallurgical design aspects as well as the infl uence of the environmental and commercial aspects of the project are presented.

Underground mining in high rock-stress environments can induce unanticipated dynamic rockmass deformation, posing a serious risk to the workforce. Data collected by seismic networks are imperative for the design-as-you-mine process. Often an inappropriate assessment of the seismic hazard is done when unnecessary data are included in analytical techniques, particularly short-term time frames. Depending on the methodology or application of data analysis and interpretation, some of the information may not be relevant and even detract from the objective. By using the spatial event clusters associated with active workplaces to define the shape and size of the polygons for data selection for subsequent analysis, a problematic subjective component can be eliminated. The mining of tabular reefs in South Africa, be they gold- or platinum group metals, is very extensive, and underground workplaces are often widespread. Production stoppages are very costly, especially for marginal mines, so there is just cause not to evacuate an entire operation’s workforce following the occurrence of a large mining-induced seismic event. A rationale based on the damaging peak particle velocities (PPV) of the past seismicity can exclude the unaffected underground personnel and allow a quick orderly withdrawal where required. Micro-deformation may precede rockbursting, which can occur on-shift close to the workface. A mine-wide array of geophones suitable for the accurate location and analysis of seismicity may not be able to detect these higher-frequency emissions. Inexpensive but fit-for-purpose accelerometers, providing real-time, continuous measurement of acoustic rockmass deformation near the workplace, integrated through underground and surface communications networks, are shown to record ‘rock-talk’, clearly distinguishable from the instrument background noise, which can be in the order of hours leading up to an imminent damaging seismic event.

Vast amounts of waste drilling mud containing heavy metals is produced during oil drilling process, which causes great pollution to the environment. Therefore, it needs to be treated until it is harmless. This study uses industrial waste and Portland Cement stabilized waste drilling mud; the unconfined compression strength, leaching amount of Pb2+ and Cr6+ ions, and pore size of the stabilized soil were tested at different times during freezing-thawing cycles. The antifreeze performance of the stabilized drilling mud with industrial waste is discussed. The results show that the strength of the stabilized soil decreases with an increase in the number of freeze–thaw cycles. The strength loss of the stabilized soil after freeze–thaw cycles can be effectively reduced by increasing the industrial waste content, especially the content of phosphogypsum in the stabilizer component. Pb2+ ions and Cr6+ ions can be effectively stabilized by industrial waste. The results of the pores test prove that the compactness of stabilized soil solidified by industrial waste residue is greater than that of cement alone.

A capacidade de alimentação de sistemas de fundição é uma das características tecnológicas que está correlacionada a resultados qualitativos negativos, como porosidades e deformações geométricas dos produtos fundidos. As ligas com suas características são parte fundamental do processo de alimentação. A metodologia de caracterização da capacidade de alimentação por meio da coquilha Tatur foi utilizada nesse trabalho, para a qual foram desenvolvidos novos processos de dosagem da liga líquida, com o objetivo de prover maior repetitividade, e consequentemente, maior coerência morfológica das amostras produzidas. Para isso, foram desenvolvidos dois novos métodos de dosagem, chamados “método de dosagem dinâmica” e “método de pré-dosagem”. Esses foram testados e analisados, sendo suas amostras avaliadas comparativamente com o padrão morfológico teórico. "Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter to Japan, accounting for about 30 Mt annually. They produced over 400 Mt in 2015, over 99% of which is from open-cut mines. However, the conditions of surface mining are becoming worse year by year: the stripping ratio is increasing, the economy is worsening, and the infrastructure for coal transportation from inland mining areas is not being maintained. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. In consideration of growing need, our research program is conducting a study on the potential for an underground coal mine in Indonesia. This research is being done through the roadway heading research program, which is looking into developing an underground coal mine from an open pit highwall. The greatest challenge for underground coal mine development in Indonesia is the maintaining the safety of the mine roadway during heading because the roof rock is exceptionally weaker. There is a potential for heading below mobile, unconsolidated soft sediment, and instead mining a deep area. This increases the likelihood for problems in the stability of the support system due to increasing ground pressure. The ground behavior around the roadway was measured using telltales, extensometers, and convergence measurements. Moreover, rock property tests were also conducted on exploration drilling cores. Based on the geological dates and monitoring data, a series of numerical analyses were conducted in order to assess support needs in the main roadway under different depths. Results of numerical analyses indicate that the current arch support design is effective when the mining depth is lower than 100m. However, if the mining depth is larger than 100m, the current arch support design should be changed to include the application of higher yield strength material, shorter spacing, etc. Moreover, bolting may also be useful if ground pressure is high locally. Based on a series of measurement data of ground and support behavior, a control criterion for main roadways under weak geological conditions is proposed in this paper."

"Hollow bar tiebacks can offer an economical alternative to conventional solid bar and strand tieback systems for use in temporary excavation support construction. However, the limitations associated with the installation of hollow bar tiebacks require special attention during design, construction and load testing to verify conformance with conventional performance and proof testing criteria (PTI, 2014). In particular, providing a reliable free length is complicated by the 10-foot (3-m) -long, segmental, couplingto- coupling nature of the free length sheath in the hollow bar system, and addressing the fully grouted annulus of the bond zone and the free length zone at the end of installation are key concerns. In addition, it is often more convenient to install a greater number of more closely spaced, lower capacity tiebacks with the hollow bar system, compared to conventional tiebacks. This paper examines how these issues were addressed for a project involving a 60-foot (18-m) -deep sheet pile excavation through a highway embankment and a 70-foot-deep sheet pile and soldier pile and lagging excavation through a railroad embankment, both supported by a hybrid system of hollow bar tiebacks and hollow bar soil nails. The project involved approximately 300 tiebacks and 400 soil nails.INTRODUCTIONEngineers Construction, Inc. (ECI), constructed a pair of 32-foot (9.8-m) -wide (clear span), 30-foot (9- m) -high (21 feet (6.4 m) above the stream bed), cast-in-place concrete arch culverts as a design-build project for the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) in East Ryegate, Vermont. The new culverts replaced an existing 8-foot (2.4-m) -wide by 6-foot (1.8-m) -high cast-in-place concrete culvert under US Route 5 (RTE5), and twin, 2-foot (0.6-m) -wide by 5-foot (1.5-m) -high granite block culverts under the Washington County Railroad (WACR) alignment. The culverts convey Manchester Brook eastward, through the embankments for RTE5 and the WACR, on its way to the Connecticut River. The Connecticut River is located approximately 100 feet (30 m) east of the WACR embankment. The existing structures were undersized and backed up water behind the embankments during high flow events; and often trapped debris that flowed down the brook and became clogged. The existing culverts also had cracks and openings that have resulted in the loss of ground into the culverts and the formation of sinkholes in the sides of the embankments. Moreover, the reason for the large cross-sectional dimensions of the culverts was to make them of sufficient size and openness to encourage the migration of fish up the stream to spawn. The culvert through the RTE5 embankment is 144 feet (44 m) long, and the culvert through the WACR embankment is 128 feet (39 m) long, with a 57-foot (17.4-m) -long by 32–foot (9.8- m) -wide by 17-foot (5.2-m) -deep 10 feet (3 m) deep above the stream bed) open channel section between the two culverts.
