"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from prototypes to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become critical to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width. This will, therefore, generate potentially significant reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and its associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road.This article presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined partly from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this article, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images that are analyzed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration.Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. The damage caused by catastrophic earthquakes has always been an incentive towards more sophisticated building codes and requirements. In parallel to computer technology development, the engineers? attitude towards acquisition of more accurate results is increasing. This approach leads to designation of structural elements with more elaboration considering different aspects of their behavior. In addition, less simplified methods will be considered as satisfactory for analyzing such problems. The problem of soil-pile-structure interaction is one of the phenomena that can be included in this category. In general, there are two methods by which the study of soil-pile interaction phenomenon is studied. These include direct and sub-structuring methods. The sub-structuring approach relies on the linear or slightly non-linear behavior of soil since it employs the results of kinematic interaction analyses for inertial interaction studies. In the past, the kinematic interaction between pile-soil was considered as negligible. This was due to the softer nature of the surrounding soil that increased the time period of vibrations. However, more research revealed that although this approach was consistent in many cases, there were some sites where the time period decreased. This was due to the material properties of the foundation and the soil, in a way that caused the frequency of vibration meet natural frequency of the system. The second type of interaction is the inertial interaction which reflects the effect a structure on top exerts on the oscillation experienced by the foundation. This paper examines the impact of vertical load on the inertial interaction by virtue of impedance functions. Three different load cases for the structure at the top of a pile foundation were considered for the analyses conducted in this study. The changes in the stiffness and damping of the system by frequency are studied and finally, the results are presented.

"Since 1994 the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) has used risk analysis to evaluate dams. Risk considers both the likelihood of failure and the expected consequences should failure occur. Risk analysis relies on the detailed formulation and critical analysis of all possible potential failure modes. Potential failure modes are formulated by describing the sequence of events that must occur to result in failure, where failure is defined as the uncontrolled release of the impounded reservoir. Failure occurs in response to loadings such as water seepage through a dam (static forces), shaking from an earthquake (dynamic forces), sudden flood inflows (hydrologic forces), or accidental overfilling (operational errors). Reclamation has, to a limited extent, applied risk analysis to inactive and abandoned mines to evaluate tailings dams, pit lakes and flooded underground mines. Case histories of potential failure mode analysis, as applied to mine impounded water, illustrate what critical technical information is needed to determine if failure is likely, what the consequences of failure are likely to be, and what are the highest risks that should be addressed first.IntroductionImpounded water and high water content wastes at mining and industrial processing sites are potential threats to public safety and the environment. Recent failures such as the TVA Kingston flyash impoundment failure in Tennessee in 2008 (4.1 million m3 or 5.4 million cu yd) release, the Mt. Poly Tailings Dam failure in British Columbia in 2014 (4.4 million m3 or 5.8 million cu yd) release, and the Samarco Fundao Tailings Dam failure in Brazil in 2015 (59 millon m3 or 78 million cu yd) release have renewed attention to this issue. Potential risks from impounded water at mining and industrial sites originate not only from tailing dams, but also from water in process ponds and conveyance pipelines, sediment retention dams, water retention dams, mine pit lakes and flooded underground mine workings.Conventional water retaining dams also have a record of failure. Notable examples of failure include Vajont Dam in Italy in 1963 (2,600 lives lost), Banqiao and Shimantan Dams in China in 1975 (171,000 lives lost), and Machhu-II Dam in India (10,000 lives lost). After the 1976 Teton Dam failure in Idaho, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) established a Dam Safety Program. By 1984, the agency developed and began using risk analysis methods. BOR operates and maintains an inventory of hundreds of aging dams which were designed and constructed over a period of 100 years. Many of these facilities were designed and constructed prior to the development and adaptation of modern soil mechanics in dam engineering. Diligent observational monitoring, detailed site investigations and the application of risk evaluation to the BOR dam inventory has identified many deficiencies resulting in significant demands on available funding for remediation efforts. The application of risk analysis has allowed the agency to rank sites by risk. By giving priority of remedial efforts to high-risk sites, significant improvements to dam safety have been achieved."

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar alguns exemplos de aplicações na Indústria Siderúrgica e de Mineração (Prensa de Rolos e Torre de Resfriamento) mostrando que com o emprego de uma confiável metodologia para determinação dos benefícios energéticos é possível a implantação das medidas de conservação de energia em sistemas de força motriz instalados nestas indústrias com o simples uso de Lubrificantes Sintéticos Especiais em substituição ao largo emprego de óleos minerais. Esta solução também proporciona ganhos energéticos e financeiros expressivos e mais atrativos do que as já consagradas soluções de eficiência energética como troca de lâmpadas e /ou motores de alto rendimento. Além do mais, a troca de lubrificante já é rotina implementada nas indústrias e seus profissionais da área de manutenção, não sendo preciso treinamento adicional para implementação, tornando esta ação com o propósito de economizar energia simples e fácil de ser implementada. Statistical data on injuries in the metal and nonmetal industry of the United States first became available to the Bureau of Mines by collecting reports from the operators for the calendar year 1911. Since then reports have been collected annually. The present bulletin, covering the calendar year 1954, is the 31st publication (1933-34 was published as Bulletin 398) containing statistical data on injuries at metal and nonmetal mines and related plants, and it 1s the first such bulletin to be published since 1942. The last publication was Bulletin 461, Metal and Nonmetal-Mine Accidents in the United States, 1942. The unpublished statistics for 1943-53 may be found in the Appendix of this bulletin. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to collect data on injuries and related employment at metal and nonmetal mines, but there is no Federal law that compels operators to submit such information. Therefore, all materials submitted are voluntary responses to the Bureau's requests for information. The figures presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry, nevertheless, every effort has been made to make them so, and the data given are believed to be representative of the hazards to which metal and nonmetal workers are exposed. Moreover, the figures are comparable as between States-which is significant in view of the lack of uniformity among the States as regards classes of plants covered by State laws, classes of injuries covered by State reports, and other factors that tend to make it impracticable or impossible to compare the injury experience of one State with that of another or comprehend the relative importance of the various causes of injuries in the industry as a whole.

"Our recent studies revealed that the sulfide minerals in contact with water during grinding produced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) where the amount of H2O2 production by the minerals found to be in the order of pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. The H2O2 effect on the oxidation of pulp components and its influence on the concentrate grade and recovery in flotation have been studied and the results have been presented and discussed in this paper. Studies have also been carried out to build correlation between percentage of pyrite in the concentrate, grinding conditions and concentration of OH•/H2O2 in the pulp and as well of controlling the formation of these species through known chemical means for depressing the generation of the oxidant. Flotation tests using a complex sulfide ore with the same reagent scheme that is being used at Bama concentrator in Iran but with the addition i) Na2S reductant and ii) inorganic (EDTA) and organic (TETA) surface modifiers, during grinding stage have been performed to judge the beneficial or detrimental role of H2O2 on the selective flotation of sulfides. The results demonstrate that the selectivity of metal sulfides against pyrite increases with increasing generation of H2O2 in the pulp liquid.INTRODUCTIONOur recent studies have illustrated the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by metal-sulphides during grinding in the presence and absence of oxygen (Javadi Nooshabadi & Hanumantha Rao, 2013a; Javadi Nooshabadi & Hanumantha Rao, 2013b; Javadi Nooshabadi & Hanumantha Rao, 2013c; Javadi Nooshabadi & Hanumantha Rao, 2014). In the absence of oxygen, it was found that pyrite surface is catalytically active and able to breakdown water molecules to form OH• free radical and thereby deriving oxygen in the formation of H2O2 from water molecules. The in-situ formation of H2O2 and its influence on sulphide flotation has not been addressed yet. The presence of strong H2O2 oxidant in the pulp liquid and its selective oxidation of pyrite would be beneficial in depressing pyrite flotation. Therefore, it is important to build correlation between percentage of pyrite in the concentrate, grinding conditions and concentration of OH•/H2O2 in the pulp as well as to study possible ways of flexibly controlling the formation of these species through known chemical means for depressing the generation of the oxidant."

"In this study, the authors used heat conduction analysis with the aim of quantitatively evaluating whether treating improved ground with cover soil is an effective measure for maintaining strength development in the surface layer of improved ground after constructing cement treated soil for the winter season. This report describes a simple procedure to evaluate covering soil thickness, which is necessary for the strength of the surface of cement treated soil, by using the freeze index and both the water content ratio and dry density.INTRODUCTIONIt was reported that when ground improvement using cement is performed in winter in a snowy cold region (Fig. 1 photo, Fig. 2), the uppermost 1 m of the improved ground (i.e., the cement-treated soil) tends to become prone to solidification failure from exposure to the cold air during curing (Hashimoto et al. 2006). In light of this, our research laboratory conducted unconfined compression tests using curing temperature as a parameter of analysis on improved ground toward understanding the influence of curing temperature (ambient air temperature) on the strength improvement afforded by ground improvement.The authors found that if the curing temperature is maintained at 0°C for the first 28 days after improvement and then at 5°C for the next 337 days after improvement, the improved ground is expected to have 90% of the unconfined compressive strength of improved ground whose temperature was maintained at 20°C for the first 365 days after improvement (Hashimoto et al. 2011)."

Mixtures of zirconium diboride and iron, cobalt, and nickel were resistance sintered to high-density compacts using modified electric welding equipment. To evaluate the use of iron, cobalt, or nickel as binders for zirconium diboride, the sintered compacts were examined in polished section and tested for crushing strength, hardness, microhardness, oxidation rate, and resistance to mechanical shock. Each of the zirconium diboride-metal mixtures produced brittle cermets, but the hardness was generally satisfactory. The iron- and cobalt-bonded cermets exhibited rather poor oxidation resistance. Cobalt provided the least brittle bond, and nickel, the hardest and most resistant to oxidation. Iron tended to form chalky compacts with low resistance to mechanical shock.

THE Tennessee Copper Co.'s mines are in the southeast corner of the state of Tennessee, Polk Co., in the well-known Ducktown copper basin. Their new circular production shaft will eventually be the only ore hoisting shaft, and is located for handling ore from Boyd, Calloway, Mary, and Cherokee mines. A circular, rather than a rectangular, shaft was decided upon because: 1-The circular shaft section is stronger when lined with concrete. Reinforcing steel was not required, thus reducing lining cost by one- quarter. 2-Water sealing was desired; it was thought it could best be done with a concrete lining followed by pressure grouting to eliminate water seeps. 3-The shaft labor saving equipment could best be used in a large opening, so the round section was made for economy, sinking, mucking, concreting and water sealing. Less shaft steel is used than could have been possible with steel sets. There are no posts required; center beams and Tee plate assembly placed at 10 ft hold the 100 lb steel guide rails.

In mid 1993, Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH, based in Germany got the order to develop a sampling tool capable of penetrating all different types of seabed sediments including cobbles and boulders and into bedrock. BHP and their partners Benguela Concessions Ltd., had been convinced by the Bauer Trench Cutter Technology and a large scale test in Germany that this system will be the right one to fulfill their expectations for sampling the diamond area off the coast of Namibia. The technique of the tool is based on Bauer's standard cutter technology, which is widely used for the installation of cut-off and diaphragm walls all around the world. The two counterrotating cutter wheels with 12.1 tom torque each cut an area of 3 x 1.2 m (up to 3 x 3 m are possible). The material mixed with seawater was then pumped to the separation plant on board the vessel Geomaster with a capacity of approximately 700 m3/h. Cutter wheels and mud pump were mounted on a special cutter frame and connected by wire ropes and hydraulic hoses to the vessel. An outer frame with four telescopic legs supported the cutter vertically on the uneven seabed and allowed a controlled penetration of the tool up to 6 m into the diamond bearing ground. The tool required a total power installed of approximately 800 kW. All hoses, the 6-inch mud hoses as well as the hydraulic hoses, were stored and compensated on drums on board suitable for a water depth of up to 200 m. Launch and recovery of the tool was effected through the moon pool of the vessel and the 25 m high, special designed drill tower. The 65? to sampling tool had been commissioned in early 1994 in Cape Town. After intensive testing the sampling programme of more than 4000 holes could be successfully completed by January 1995.

This publication covers the work of the Division of Coal Mine Inspection, Bureau of Mines, as performed under provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. It presents background information and data since 1952 when the Act became effective and includes up-to-date statistics for the calendar year 1962. During that year, approximately 9,704 coal mines were active in the United States, and the Bureau made 12,810 regular inspections. BACKGROUND The Federal coal-mine inspection program was established to carry out the provisions in Public Law 49, 77th Congress, (H. R. 2082) approved May 7, 1941. This act has since been amended as Title I, Advisory Powers Relating to Health and Safety Conditions in Mines, under Public Law 552, 82d Congress, approved July 16, 1952, which also included Title 11, Prevention of Major Disasters in Mines. Public Law 552 is known as the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.

The Convertol process, recently developed in western Germany, is a new method of cleaning and dewatering coal-washery slurries. It is a modified bulk-oil process, in which a very small quantity of heavy oil is dispersed over the surfaces of the coal particles, followed by a screen centrifuge operation in which the water and dirt (clay, shale, and pyrite particles) are thrown out through the screen perforations and the clean coal particles are retained on the screen and discharged as a dewatered, clean coal product of 8- to l0-percent surface moisture. It is reported, also, that the process oil, all of which is retained in the clean-coal product, adds to the coking power of the coal and facilitates the production of briquets, reducing the proportions of binding material required.

Technologic advances in materials utilization during the past two decades have brought is a long way toward the point where we can make the products we need from the materials we have readily available. Notable examples are the synthesis of diamond, zeolites, quartz crystal, mullite, and mica, and the development of phosphate bonded tale. Two of these--zeolites and mullite--involve the use of clays. There is little reason to doubt that equally important advances will be realized in the next decade, and that clays will play an important role in the developing materials technology. Indeed, the stage is already set for many of them. This discussion is concerned primarily with the high quality, relatively high priced clays, kaolin, bentonite, fuller's earth and ball clay. The first three have enjoyed demand growth rates over the past two decades which on the average exceeded the growth rate for the economy as a whole. There are indications that demand for ball clay will be growing at a faster rate in the future.

Net present value (NPV) has been the main criterion in mining project evaluation and production plan optimisation. It is a common practice in NPV calculations to take into account only the tangible cost items in the corporate accounting system. The costs incurred due to damage to the local ecosystem and environment are left out and treated as externalities. Such practice on the one hand underestimates the total cost of a mining operation and, on the other hand, ignores the difference in ecological/environmental impacts between different mine plan alternatives. This paper attempts to measure the ecological costs of mining and to incorporate such costs into the evaluation scheme in mining project evaluation and mine planning. The ecological costs of mining are estimated based on the areas and types of land (eg forest land, grazing land, crop land) damaged by mining activities and the carbon emission from fossil fuel consumption. For the land areas (and their associated ecosystems) directly damaged by mining activities, the ecological costs are measured by the prevention and restoration costs, the lost values of eco-services of the damaged land, including bio-product production, soil erosion control, water run-off control, oxygen release, air pollutant absorption and formation of soil nutrients. The ecological cost of carbon emission from the energy consumption of a mining operation is measured by the cost of cultivating the equivalent forest land required to uptake the emitted carbon. A case study on a large-scale open pit mining project is presented to demonstrate the influence of ecological costs on the mine planning outcome.

The "United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC-2009) for Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources 2009” is the international system designed to meet (to the extent possible) the needs and to support the decision making and resources management of private industry investment, governments, policymakers, bank investment, scientists. There are different international and national systems classifying commodities (resources, reserves, possibility and feasibility to extract them, etc.) with their own definitions and reporting terminology which often do not overlap entirely or even differ significantly - thus creating difficulties and problems among stakeholders to understand each other. The UNFC-2009 is developed to allow “speaking in one language”. The paper presents briefly the UNFC-2009. The UNFC-2009 applies simultaneously three fundamental criteria to classify projects: economic and social viability, field project status and feasibility, and geological knowledge (so called E, F and G axes), thus creating a visualized, easily understandable three dimensional system. The E, F and G axis categories are divided to subcategories, using additional criteria. The UNFC-2009 is already applicable to solid minerals, nuclear fuel resources, petroleum. The amounts of solid waste generated by metals production from ores (mining, minerals beneficiation, extraction metallurgy) and its metals content are discussed from the viewpoint of using the waste as resource. An attempt is made to apply the UNFC-2009 to technogenic waste from metals production from ores - both to old engineering constructions (historic mining dumps and reclaimed beneficiation tailings ponds) and new (currently in use) dumps and ponds.

Pb–benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) (lead complexes of benzohydroxamic acid) exhibits high selectivity but low collecting efficiency in scheelite flotation. This paper reports the manner in which BHA and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were employed as ligands to coordinate with the lead ions to obtain a colloidal lead-group multiple ligand complex, i.e., the Pb–BHA–SDS, for improving the collecting efficiency of Pb–BHA. The flotation mechanism of Pb–BHA–SDS with respect to scheelite was investigated from the viewpoint of interface science based on the pure mineral flotation, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle measurements. The results showed that the BHA and SDS coordinated with Pb2+ to form novel leadgroup multiple ligand complexes, which are different from the traditional understanding associated with the mixed collectors. Pb–BHA–SDS was a better collector with stronger collecting ability and excellent selectivity in regard to a scheelite flotation than Pb–BHA. The addition of SDS to Pb–BHA enhanced the latter’s adsorption ability on the scheelite surface and improved the hydrophobicity of the collector’s nonpolar groups, rendering Pb–BHA–SDS as a more efficient collector at a low dosage. Discharge cones for large Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) and Autogenous Grinding (AG) mills are subjected to high wear as significant volumes of ground ore and slurry exit the mill. With the larger diameter mills of 32ft to 40ft in size becoming the norm, very high, concentrated wear is highlighting the limitations of conventional discharge cones and frequent changes are subsequently required. This paper outlines the advances made in the design of the Bullnose discharge cone. Superior wear materials to increase wear life over conventional rubber or chrome-moly steel discharge cones and the introduction of key design features to reduce reline times and improve fit and safety during installation, offer significant opportunities for the mill operator. Collated from multiple case studies, the wear data and reline history from 2004 to present clearly illustrate the way in which superior component longevity has reduced the frequency of relines over the life of the product to increase mill availability and effectively increase the tonnes milled in a period.
