El método de explotación por subniveles es uno de los más utilizados en operaciones mineras de mediana y gran escala, como es el caso de la minería de zinc en Perú. Para seguir la secuencia de explotación, este método requiere el relleno de los caserones vacíos, como por ejemplo el relleno en pasta, el cual se produce mediante la mezcla del relave producto de la planta concentradora de mineral con un 3.5 % de cemento, con el fin de que dicho relleno actúe como pilares de gran dimensión que aporten el sostenimiento necesario a la mina (0,8 MPa). Sin embargo, esto genera una dilución con el mineral a explotar al momento de avanzar en los tajos aledaños. Por ese motivo, y por la necesidad de lograr la automatización de la operación minera, se decide evaluar el relleno detrítico cementado, evaluación que se realiza mediante el análisis de resistencia, estudios de factibilidad, rendimiento en costos, aumento de productividad y seguridad en la operación. El resultado son valores máximos de resistencia de los pilares de 1,6 MPa, que evitan la dilución y mejoran el porcentaje de recuperación de mineral.

En el presente artículo se analiza información recopilada durante la fase de crecimiento, se presentan diferentes etapas en desarrollo y se describen los estudios realizados en la planta de beneficio, a nivel técnico y de gestión, con óptimos resultados de producción, eficiencia e indicadores metalúrgicos.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Over the last decade (2005–2014), a total of 439 significant deposits of gold and base metals were found in the world. Twenty (or 4.6 per cent) of these deposits were in the Pacific/South-East Asia (Pacific/SE Asia) region. In terms of contained metal, the region accounted for 1.6 per cent of gold and 13.8 per cent of copper found in the world. With regard to nickel and zinc/lead, the region’s contributions were insignificant.Over the same period, the Pacific/SE Asia region accounted for 6.6 per cent and 12.6 per cent of all gold and copper exploration expenditures in the world respectively. After adjusting for by-product credits, unreported discoveries and likely growth in resource, the unit discovery cost for the region was US$199/oz (compared to a world average of US$50/oz). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$55/oz and US$25/oz respectively. The region’s unit discovery cost for copper was US$0.036/lb (versus a world average of US$0.040). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$0.026/lb and US$0.008/lb Cu respectively.The region’s mediocre discovery performance doesn’t reflect its distribution of known mineralisation. Some countries within the region have a very good endowment per square kilometre.It is noted that the intensity of exploration (and resulting success) would be boosted if governments provided a more mining- and investment-friendly business environment and generated better precompetitive geological data sets (to identify new exploration targets and boost the country’s perceived mineral prospectivity). A multivariable regression analysis of a decade of data from the Fraser Institute’s mining company surveys found that a ten point increase in the Policy Perception Index or a 0.1 point increase in the Mineral Potential Index could boost (in the short term) exploration expenditures by 1.9 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively. The resulting economic benefits of an expanded mining sector would be significant. The same story applies elsewhere in the world.CITATION:Schodde, R C, 2015. FLOTATION practice in Idaho is now about 13 years old. The advance has been steady during these 13 years. The operators have been alert to take advantage of the newest developments and they have themselves made a constant effort to improve their work. The metallurgical improvements are due to the development of (1) better equipment, (2) better reagents, and (3) better understanding and control of the process. During the eight years the writer has been in this district, there has been continuous experimentation by several companies to improve the ore dressing by flotation methods. Gravity concentration has fought hard to hold its place, and although it is true that gravity processes have been improved during this period, nevertheless, in several of the important mills of the district the few tables that managed to hang on have finally given way. On the straight-lead ores, tables and jigs are still used; and, due to better classification, their hold on this job has been strengthened. ORES OF THE DISTRICT The ores of the district are of two general classes: (1) clean lead ores, such as those from the Bunker Hill and Hecla mines, and (2) complex lead-zinc ores. The general impression prevails that the clean lead ores, class 1, are simple and that it is easy to obtain high recoveries and good grade products. This, in a way, is a false impression; there is quite a high percentage of locked middling in these ores at 100 and 150-mesh sizes. Improved classification preparatory to table treatment of this type of ore has made it possible to segregate effectively a high-grade middling which is further comminuted and floated. The complex lead-zinc ores of the district, of which the ore from the Morning mine of the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. is a typical example, always have presented a difficult problem. It always has been comparatively easy to make a clean lead concentrate, but it never has been possible to concentrate sphalerite with a-specific gravity of 4.10 from siderite of gravity 3.88. Also, a large percentage of the galena and sphalerite of this class of ore refuses to separate out until the crushing has been carried

The paper presents the results of a study which involved collection and analysis of airborne pollutant concentration data in two producing underground room and pillar metal mines which use diesel powered equipment in the area near the face. The results include the concentrations of CO2, CO, NO, NO2 and respirable particulate matter measured with the latest portable instruments, and the carbon and hydrogen contents of the particulate matter samples determined by combusting them in a Elemental Analyzer. The carbon and hydrogen contents are used to estimate the amount of diesel particulate matter in the mine ambient air. The short term grab sample concentration data, although not suitable for determining compliance with ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), are related to the TLVs so that they may be compared conveniently. Lognormal frequency distributions and the arithmetic mean of the concentration measurement data are used to compare different mine situations. Conclusions are drawn as to which pollutants are most important to control under actual mine production conditions.

To many people, rescue from elevated, sometimes vertical, locations brings about thoughts of heroism mixed with brawn and self-sacrifice. Images are conjured of cliff rescues where the technical effort is hanging from a few seemingly small nylon ropes hundreds of feet above the ground. Such is the vertical realm of technical rope rescue. This is a technical field in which the author serves professionally as battalion chief of (rope) operations for a northern Arizona fire district, and as a private sector instructor to mines in the United States and Canada.

Demands on available lands will continue to increase due to the projected increase in population and industrial expansion. Though there is an upper limit on the available lands, the multi-use nature of the lands will make it possible to meet these demands. However, this will not happen without adequate planning. Land uses can be broadly categorized as non-renewable and renewable. Lands with mineable resources can be dedicated at some point in time to the extraction of resources. Such a dedication, however long-term, is only temporary because of the non-renewable nature of the mineable resources. Implied here is that the land will be available before and after mining for other uses. Planning for such lands must have the objective that, as far as practicable, no non-renewable uses are pre-empted and no renewable uses are permanently destroyed. The primary aspects of this planning process will be addressed in this paper, These aspects include a discussion of planning responsibility, data needs and availability, the integration of mine planning and post-mining land use planning and a long-term plan for resource conservation and utilization. Minerals, together with agriculture and forestry products, are the primary sources of wealth. Therefore, to avoid land development that may pre-empt future mineral resource utilization, the local planning groups must be aware of the mineralization and mining potential. Much work needs to be done to identify and characterize the mineral resources. Even more work is needed in land use planning for lands with mineral deposits.

"The Haile gold mine in South Carolina is increasing the automation level of its processing plant in order to improve operational stability. One step toward this goal is the application of a digital twin concept to provide virtual instruments. Haile has engaged Andritz to implement virtual instruments at its grinding area hydrocyclones and at its tailing thickener underflow pump. These virtual instruments provide density values in a traditionally difficult location for reliable slurry density measurement. The digital twin is a first-principles integrated design engineering with advanced simulation (IDEAS) simulation model, connected in real time to the control system. Results have been promising, with the virtual instrument values matching the physical instrument under normal operating conditions and showing better prediction under upset conditions. Haile plans to use the virtual instruments as optional process control parameters.OceanaGold’s Haile gold mine is located near Kershaw, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC. This location was first mined in 1827 and has produced gold through several operating periods since then, including a heap leaching operation from 1985 through 1992. In October 2015, OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals, the previous owner of the Haile operation.The current operation began in 2017 as an openpit mine with additional underground resources. The nameplate throughput is 5,760 t/d (6,350 stpd) ore, and 2017 production was 3,345 kg (118,000 oz) gold, with 3,968 to 4,384 kg (140,000 to 155,000 oz) gold expected in 2018. Proven and probable reserves exceed 85 t (3 million oz) gold at a grade of 2 g/t (0.06 oz/st) gold. The process, as shown in Fig. 1, includes a primary jaw crusher, comminution with a semiautogonous grinding (SAG) mill and ball mill circuit, flash flotation, rougher flotation, regrinding, pre-aeration, carbon-inleach leaching, carbon elution and regeneration, cyanide recovery, electrowinning and refining. The Haile operation’s inaugural gold pour took place Jan. 20, 2017. Mine life is expected through the year 2030."

Assuring ground control safety in many mining and tunneling projects depends, at least in part, on an understanding of in situ stress conditions that will be encountered. Yet it is rarely practical to conduct more than a very limited number of stress measurements. Stresses along the route of a proposed excavation are typically interpolated from available measurements, often assuming a linear variation of stress with depth (or elevation). However, projects where multiple stress measurements are conducted often report more complex variations of in situ stress, usually in apparent relationship to geologic structures. These structures often include lithologies of contrasting elastic properties. A method is proposed for estimating stresses in these cases by first back-calculating regional loads from available stress measurements and then modeling the distribution of stress throughout the rock mass. The method has been successfully applied to a set of in situ stress measurements from the Coeur d’Alene Mining District of northern Idaho, USA. Results provided new insights into district stress conditions and the distribution of rockburst hazards along mine drifts and between various mines. This success should transfer readily to suitable deep tunneling projects.

With the passage of recent national and state legislation aimed at tighter regulation of air pollution and smoke control, attention has been focused on a problem which has long confronted the coal industry--the disposal of coal waste with its inadvertent ignition. Even as recent as 1935, a decision from the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas confirms the stand taken on control of burning coal refuse disposal areas. "The uncontroverted testimony is that there is no feasible method of operating a coal mine without a gob pile on the surface, as no use has ever been found for this troublesome by-product of mining; that every large coal mine has a large gob pile close to its tipple; that sooner or later these piles all ignite through spontaneous combustion; that practically every large mine in Western Pennsylvania has a burning gob pile, and that there is no known means of averting such a fire." 19* As a result of the past "no regulation policy," there are presently on the order of 500 burning refuse banks, of which 213, 142, and 49 are found in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, respective¬ly. 18 Many of these refuse banks have burned for 40 years or more; many others may continue burning for a like period. It is estimated that the annual emission from these smoldering piles approaches 183,000 tons of pollutents which may produce many deleterious effects on the populace, property and vegetation in the proximity to the sources.16 To date, little progress has been made in alleviating the pollution from the currently burning refuse banks; however, numerous investigators who are researching the causes of ignition, as well as preventative disposal techniques (refuse compaction, layering and crushing to finer sizes) have met with some success in handling the newly discarded coal refuse.

Some data are used directly while other data are used to calculate the aromatic) naphthene) and paraffin contents of the distillation fractions and the correlation index of the paraffin-naphthene portion of the fractions. The calculated properties show significant differences in composition between crude oils. The methods of calculation and interpretation of data are explained and illustrated.

This report presents several systems for continuously monitoring the quality of air in underground mines that are being developed by the Bureau of Mines. Underground stations measure methane, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide concentrations, air velocity, and air temperature. This information is transmitted over a single telephone pair to central stations located on the surface. The central stations display alarms and the data is selectably displayed on digital panel meters.

Surfactant plays a critical role in many industrial processes such as petroleum, mining, environment and food processing, and daily life. For ionic surfactant systems, adsorption of surfactant at oil-water interface imposes a net charge to the interface. The nature and magnitude of the charges at the oil-water interface depend on charge characteristics of surfactant molecules, concentration of surfactant and solution pH. In our previous study, zeta potential measurement of hexadecane drop-lets in industrial process water was shown to be a simple, yet powerful method for identifying various types of ionic surfactants present in the aqueous system. In this paper, the site-binding model was applied to prediction of zeta potential of oil droplets in aqueous solutions containing a mixture of cationic and anionic surfactant molecules. The total number of interfacial sites for various types of surfactant involved was determined by applying the Gibbs adsorption equation to the measured interfacial tension-surfactant concentration profiles. The distribution of various types of surfactant molecules at the interfaces was evaluated by Langmuir isotherm constants. With the ionization constant of surfactant taken from the literature, the predicted zeta potentials of oil droplets in surfactant solutions from site binding model were shown in a reasonable agreement with the measured zeta potential values.

In This Chapter [Methane ignition as initiation source for much larger secondary coal dust explosions Rock dusting requirements to prevent coal dust explosions Dangers of hybrid mixtures of methane and coal dust] Although methane explosions are dangerous, those that involve coal dust are even more so. If exploding methane disperses and ignites the coal dust that has accumulated on the mine ribs and floor, the burning coal dust immeasurably increases the strength of the explosion. Such methane-dust explosions are prevented by inerting the coal dust in a way that prevents the exploding methane from igniting it. This chapter discusses the dust hazard and how it is pre-vented in U.S. coal mines. METHANE IGNITION AS INITIATION SOURCE FOR MUCH LARGER SECONDARY COAL DUST EXPLOSIONS The typical scenario for coal mine explosions starts with the ignition of a flammable methane-air atmosphere near the face. The turbulent winds from the primary methane explosion then disperse the coal dust. If there is insufficient rock dust (usually limestone), a secondary coal dust explosion then propagates throughout large sections of the mine. These scenarios have been studied extensively at the Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) and the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) of the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. The minimum quantity of methane required to initiate a coal dust explosion was studied in 1930 in the BEM [Rice et al. 1933; Nagy 1981] and then later in the LLEM, whose cross-sectional area (130 ft2) is over twice that of the BEM [Sapko et al. 1987a]. Studies conducted in the BEM closely simulated conditions that existed in operating mines in the early 20th century. The later tests in the 20-ft-wide entries of the LLEM simulated the geometries of modern mines with advanced roof support technology. The data from the BEM tests show that 13 ft3 was the minimum quantity of methane at the face that, when ignited, would disperse and ignite coal dust. In the BEM, this amount of methane was mixed with air to form a total flammable volume of about 140 ft3 of a 9% methane-in-air mix-ture. In the wider entries of the LLEM, about 37 ft3 of methane was required to disperse pure coal dust and start a self-sustained coal dust explosion. This amount of methane was mixed with

The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company's faith in pioneering this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three- year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.

In some parts of the world, silver chloride occurs naturally in deposits of cerargyrite (1) (i.e. horn silver). In other cases, silver chloride is produced and exploited for its well- known photographic or electrochemical properties. In this case, it is a valuable commodity needing no further refinement. However, silver chloride is frequently encountered in precious metals refining. In most cases, it is a by-product that occurs in small amounts. For example, it is a common occurrence in gold refining when using the Miller and Wohlwill refining processes or when parting fire assay beads. As such, the mode of reduction to elemental silver is of little impact on the overall refining economics. Thus, a variety of reduction methods are employed all enjoying varying degrees of popularity (2). On the other hand, silver chloride serves as a key intermediate in the production of fine silver by nitrogen species catalyzed acid pressure leaching of refractory silver concentrates. This has most recently been practiced at the Sunshine Mining & Refining plant located in Kellogg, Idaho. Thus, efficient methods of reduction, precipitation and materials handling on an industrial scale are of the utmost importance. In this presentation, the evolution of these methods will be detailed.

L H. DUSCHAK gave an interesting talk at a recent meeting of the. San Francisco Section, based -011 experimental work with a variety of ores at the laborator of the Treadwell-Yukon Co., in Berkeley, Cal. He was of the opinion that the customary "cut and try" method of flotation testing was still in evidence and that the flotation process was more of an art than an exact science. Propounded theories have enabled investigators to' classify reagents as well as to suggest new ideas both in the metallic and nonmetallic fields, but the application of theory has riot as yet been able to solve many of the unknown factors in operation.

Radioactive wastewaters from nuclear source of electrical energy production need to be treated and disposed of properly. Sr, Ca, Mg and Ba are common elements in this effluent, which can cause incrustation in process equipments and being unsafe to human health (90Sr). Fixation of CO2 can be applied to remove the ions mentioned before and to provide a solution where CO2 is sequestered and the deleterious elements precipitated, becoming one of the possible steps to reuse the water into the process. Moreover, removal of several metals from distinct wastewater has been evaluated using bone char through adsorption. The chemical similarity between calcium and strontium makes the exchange of these two metals favorable in the hydroxyapatite structure contained in bone char. This paper evaluated the combined action of precipitation and adsorption process with injection of CO2 and bone char addition in simulated nuclear wastewater. Removal levels of 89.0% (Sr) and 83.3% (Ca) were obtained in the combined process. The presence of bone char as seed increased the precipitation kinetics, allowing a Sr removal of 85.2% in five minutes, higher than 75.3% obtained in absence of seeds. However, removal of 91.6% (Sr) and 89.8% (Ca) were obtained in absence of seeds at 24 h. Analysis of solids have evidenced that CO2 was consumed to precipitate the metals as carbonates, since the hydroxides are formed at higher pH’s.
