Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) affect the wellbeing of workers and result in poor quality work, lower work performance and decreased motivation. In contrast to ‘occupational’ diseases where there is a direct cause-and-effect relationship between hazard and disease (e.g., asbestos and asbestosis, lead and lead poisoning), ‘work-related’ diseases are multifactorial, where the work environment and the type of work that is performed contribute significantly to musculoskeletal disorders. WMSD is the term used to describe disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system (i.e. muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves). WMSDs are by definition a work-related phenomenon. The literature shows inarguably that certain jobs and certain work-related factors are associated with a significant risk of contracting a WMSD. It is assumed that repeated movements and postures, static work, continuous loading of the tissue structures or lack of recovery time, trigger or cause a pathological process that then manifests itself as a WMSD. This paper looks at the prevalence of the WMSD condition at three mines in South Africa: a coal, a gold and a platinum mine. Predisposing factors that include work factors, presentation of symptoms and psychological factors will be discussed in the paper.

This paper stems from recent multidisciplinary research between mining engineering and health researchers at the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria, Canada. It considers the implications of a future state of sustainable mining development that places more emphasis on consideration of mine community health and sustainability within the definition of mine planning best practice. It reviews recently completed research studies on mining and other resource communities in British Columbia, Canada and a process undertaken by the research team to share research findings. It then examines the outcomes of this knowledge sharing process placing emphasis on the development of a more collaborative and enhanced mine planning process that integrates community- level indicators of health and sustainability to more effectively address mine impact-benefits. The paper concludes by discussing current initiatives that aim to benefit the mining industry, communities, and governments as they plan future mineral development projects.

The coal and gas outburst accident on May 20, 2007 at Sihe Coal Mine is unique in that there was no or very little soft coal in the coal seam and that the coal strength was very high. The outburst also showed that there was a very high gas content of 20-30 m3/t in the coal seam nearby the outburst site. Based on the field test and observations, together with laboratory experiments, detailed analysis was conducted on the controlling factors of coal and gas outburst potential at Sihe Coal Mine. Stress data available from Sihe Coal Mine, northern China, and other parts of the world, were also taken into account to facilitate the analysis. The results shows that the stress level was not abnormal compared to other coal fields in China prone to outbursts, and that gas contained in the coal seam was the main factor that triggered the outburst. All these factors were essentially controlled by the tectonic evolution features in Qinshui Coal Basin, to the Southeast of which Sihe coal field is located. Based on the analysis, assessment of coal seam outburst potential was carried out by measurements of coal seam gas contents, observation, and detection of soft coal layers in the coal seam. The results show that outbursts are limited to only a small part of the whole coal seam and that the eastern part of coal field is not prone to outbursts.

"Earth levees constructed using dredged materials taken from a river along an earth levee have annually damaged in the Mekong Delta due to high void spacing in earth levees and floodwater. Sliding and internal erosion due to floodwater or piping are two key factors causing earth levees’ failures. This study proposed to apply Deep Mixing Method (DMM) to reinforce earth levees in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The DMM creates a soil cement wall or soilcrete wall having better engineering properties such as higher strength and low hydraulic conductivity than those of the in-situ soils. The DMM can be applied to reinforce earth levees with limit additional materials that provinces in the Mekong Delta are difficult to supply. The study investigates capacity of the DMM to reinforce earth levees in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam against annual floods. Seepage and slope stability analyses under various conditions were performed with various scenarios of earth levee’s body. The analysis results indicate that the DMM can create a wall that cuts off piping across earth levee significantly and can improve stability against deep sliding due to rapid drawdown of the floodwater.INTRODUCTIONThe Mekong Delta produces agriculture products of 50% of the whole country even though the Mekong Delta has an agriculture area of 30% of the country (Wikipedia 2014). Rice is the main product for the domestic demand and export. This is the main reason why the local people want to cultivate rice 3 times per year to increase the total rice product for export. To do that, the local provinces have constructed earth levees surrounding each area of 100-200-hectare against annual floods to protect rice fields, and farmers can grow rice in the whole year. There are thousands of kilometers long earth levees in the Mekong Delta, and the local governments have spent millions of US dollars to repair and to maintain their earth levees yearly (reports of Dong Thap province 2012; 2014).Earth levees in the Mekong Delta have often failed in flood seasons (e.g., from August to December), especially in Dong Thap and An Giang provinces – the two provinces confronting directly the annual floods from the Mekong River when the floods reach the Vietnam land. The main failure of earth levees is piping, and then causing collapse of some section of an earth levee. An earth levee was usually constructed by piling up dredged materials along a river with minimum compaction. Subsequently, floodwater flows through connected void spacing and washes out soil particles in the body of an earth levee slowly to create piping. Annual wet-dry cycles make the top clay layer swelling and shrinking to form cracks that can store rainwater to trigger sliding (whitlow 2001; Ton That Vinh 2003)."

Views about the proper aim of public policy are, of course, matters of perspective and debate. Regardless of perspective, one would assume some consensus around the view that public policy ought to encourage mine operators to seek independent and critical assessments of worker safety and health at their operations through voluntary auditing. However, a review of the law on this topic shows that there is little to no manifestation of such a policy. Indeed, the balance of this paper, with a couple of exceptions, is devoted to the existing legal pitfalls that should be considered before a safety and health audit is conducted at a mine. While attorneys, particularly litigators like the author, might tend to focus on the potential problems that could arise from any given situation, the fact that most of this paper is devoted to potential legal concerns associated with auditing is a realistic reflection of the current state of the law. Specifically, this paper addresses the interplay between voluntary safety and health audits conducted at mines regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the administrative and civil legal issues related to such audits. The paper first provides an explanation of how and by whom an audit is conducted. The paper also addresses whether voluntary safety and health audits may be considered privileged and kept confidential in administrative and civil proceedings. Finally, selected legal issues related to such audits that could arise in administrative and civil litigation are discussed.1

Australian mines have traditionally relied on diesel powered vehicles to fulfil their light vehicle needs. There are many reasons for the resources industry to review its use of diesel-powered vehicles. The international industry has developed projects to explore the use of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) as a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles. While the technology for cost-effectively applying modern high-performance lithium-based batteries to the mining environment has existed for over a decade it is yet to be widespread throughout the industry. Through the collaboration of Safescape, 3ME Technology and Kirkland Lake Gold, with funding from Mining Equipment technology services (METS) Ignited, the project has focussed on advancing the Australian METS sector’s capability in the rapidly approaching implementation of BEV technology. This paper reports on the collaborative approach to develop a prototype vehicle; explains the selection criteria for the various components of the vehicle; and details the risk-based approach to developing a scalable product to replace existing underground light vehicle fleets. The prototype vehicle was tested underground at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville operations in Victoria beginning in October 2019. Reporting from these trials focusses on the key factors affecting underground operations. These include driveability, safety, charging and cycle times. Gathering data around energy consumption through normal daily duties enabled a model of energy consumption and charging requirements to be developed such that various applications of the electric vehicle can be considered against existing diesel-powered vehicles. This has provided insight into the impact on daily operations, and the way forward for large scale implementation.

The role of the precious metals is changing rapidly. They are becoming primarily materials of modern industry, and their decorative and monetary functions are diminishing in relative importance. Certainly gold is still the premier metal for jewelry, as silver is for silverware. But these uses are not growing nearly so fast as are the uses of these metals in a variety of industries. This is even more true of the platinum metals. Moreover, this is true despite the fact that the precious metals are highly expensive and liable to substitution by the base metals in cases where this is feasible. For the fact is that the physical and chemical properties of the precious metals make them relatively invulnerable to substitution; where they can be replaced by the base metals, they have been, and the opportunity for further substitution is, therefore, limited. SILVER In November 1969 the United States Treasury stopped minting the only remaining coin with any silver content. That was the silver-clad Kennedy half dollar, which had a silver content of approximately 40%. The step was taken out of necessity, because of the rising shortfall between world mine production and consumption. It was important to divert the 35 to 40 million oz of silver per year used for the minting of this coin into the open market, where it would be available for industrial consumption. This decision was important, not only for its practical effect but also for what it symbolized. Only four years earlier, in 1965, the Treasury had used 320 million oz of silver" for the full range of coinage. Now not an ounce of silver goes into the United States coinage. The reason is simple and yet complicated. For many years the U.S. Treasury had purchased silver at prices which provided a subsidy to domestic producers. As a result, silver producers were eager to sell to the Treasury, and that agency built up a huge supply of the metal -almost 2 billion oz by- 1961. But, as the free-market price neared $1.29, the basic melt value of the coinage, the Treasury became a seller of silver, not a buyer, and its stock was depleted rapidly. The Treasury lost more :than a billion ounces of silver in the years 1962 through 1965, and it continued to lose silver, both through coinage and through sales to consumers, through 1969. The Government continued to sell silver to consumers at the rate of 1.5 million oz a week, even after terminating the 40% silver Kennedy half dollar. PlannersÆ optimism (or maybe commercial necessity) means that most mine plans use equipment rates that are rarely achieved (Lumley and Beckman, 2009). This lack of understanding of what equipment actually moves is causing erroneous equipment forecasts, leading to incorrect mine development plans and economic evaluations. Compounding this problem is a downward trend in actual equipment performance in some areas. Consequently, the presentation of realistic mine plans that are actually achieved in practice is not a common occurrence. However, rational, fact-based mine planning is available to those who want it. Hundreds of millions of cycles of data from open cut mining equipment has been collected from mines around the world since 1992. This unique and highly valuable databank is growing at an exponential rate and is being used by a number of our big miners to support rational and fact-based decision-making. However, neither the use nor the appreciation of the value of this data is universal. There is a challenge to everyone in the mining industry - how do you access value from it? The databank was drilled into and the results analysed for, the Australasian Mining and Metallurgical Operating Practices (AMMOP) publication (Lumley, in press). For this paper the analysis has been extended to include interpretation of trends for draglines, shovels, excavators and trucks. It investigates trends between coal and non-coal mines and across geographic areas. It is known that mining equipment performance in most sections of the industry is falling. This paper attempts to quantify the fall and provide explanations. The trends are analysed to extract the reasons behind the changes and most importantly, what can be done about it.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2012. Wide variation in the nature of the coal seams and the surrounding rock mass of the Indian coalfields and very little information about the associated stress fields were observed to be the major hurdles in the straight forward application of a continuous miner (CM) based mechanised depillaring approach. Due to various techno-economic reasons, a considerably large number of coal seams have been developed and are standing on pillars in India. The development of pillars is done as per Indian coal mines regulation, which results in pillars of relatively large size. In fact, the large size of the pillars provides stiff natural support to control caving of the massive overlying strata. However, the size of these pillars is not conducive for the single pass pillar stripping technique and, therefore, there is a need for pillar splitting before pillar extraction/retreating. Splitting of the pillar may reduce the competency/stiffness of the pillar, which creates a chance of overriding during final extraction below a massive roof stratum. This paper first discusses the existing coal mining scenario in India followed by a brief presentation of geo-technical details of pillar extraction at the three sites where a CM has been introduced for depillaring/pillar retreating in the country to date. Based on past rock mechanics experiences with conventional depillaring faces, stability issues of the pillars, fenders, and stumps in and around the depillaring face are discussed. This may prove to be an important factor in the success of future CM faces. It is recognized that the application of the modern strata movement monitoring techniques may improve operation safety by providing valuable qualitative and quantitative information that can be used to improve the design of modern concepts like roof bolt based breaker line support during pillaring.

The Federal Bureau of Mines and the Alabama Power Company conducted an experiment in underground gasification of coal at Gorgas, Ala. involving the use of hydraulic fracturing to increase the air acceptance of a coalbed for the introduction of combustion air and removal of product gases. Air acceptance is defined as the flow rate of air which can be injected into the coalbed at 65 p.s.i.g. This was the second time the hydraulic-fracturing technique was used at Gorgas. Sand suspended in a heavy oil served as the fracturing fluid in the first experiment; in the second the sand was two to six times larger and was suspended in a water-starch gel. In addition to providing further tests of the underground-gasification process, the purpose of the second experiment was to determine the effects of the larger sand and greater volumes of a water-base fluid on (1) the extent of the fractured area, (2) the air acceptance of the coal, and (3) the rate at which a gasification path could be carbonized (linked) through the coal, and to compare these results with those of the first experiment. The coal was fractured by injecting 11,000 lb. of sand and 33,580 gal. of water and water-gel at 200 to 600 g.p.m. and 900 to 1,000 p.s.i. The fluid fractured the coal and the sand served as a propping agent to hold the cracks and crevices open. Pressures during the fracturing operation at test boreholes indicated that the fracturing fluid extended only about 150 ft. from borehole H, the point of application of the fracture. Injection of air revealed that the air acceptance of the coalbed within this e t was materially increased. On the other hand, increased air acceptance also was noted at boreholes up to 280 ft. from borehole H and at the electrolinking area 300 to 400 ft. away, indicating that the fracture effects extended considerably farther than was evident from observation. Similar effects were noted at approximately the same distances after the first hydraulic fracture.

Information technology (IT) initiatives in the past have tended to be sold on their ability to maximize resource output and return on capital by using assets more effectively and efficiently. Many IT projects fail, not delivering return on their investment. This is known in the IT industry as the ?productivity paradox,? where increasing investments in IT do not result in comparable increases in productivity. Experiences and studies of most business sectors reveal that this paradox is rooted in the false assumption that more IT spending automatically results in financial benefit, whereas the true source of benefits is in how effectively IT is used. Most business sectors have accepted that the reengineering of processes is required to gain the full benefits promised of IT. A mining operation has organizational processes similar to most business sectors but unique operational processes. The lessons of changing business practice in more common business processes such as inventory control and customer-supplier relationships can be adequately transposed into a mine. The unique operational processes in mines, in turn require unique redesign efforts. Several enabling information technology opportunities have recently become available, such as more integrated mine production management systems and tactical manger training simulators. This paper reviews the latest IT products and ou lines the processes and kinds of change that will be required in order to benefit from these new investment options.

Many transmission towers, high-rise buildings and bridges are supported by piles. These structures may be subjected to large lateral loads. Therefore, experimental investigations on model piles under lateral loads were conducted in uniform dry sand. Small-scale model tests were carried out considering the influence of pile length, pile diameter, sand density, roughness of pile surface and vertical load on the lateral resistance of a pile. Furthermore, the effect of pile load eccentricity (e/L) on the ultimate lateral resistance was studied. Investigations, of the influence of various parameters on the magnitude of the coefficient of subgrade reaction (nh), were also performed. It was found that the lateral load capacity of piles increases with increase in pile length, pile diameter, pile surface roughness and increase in the sand density. The results also showed that the coefficient of horizontal modulus of subgrade reaction, (nh), decreases with deflection increase. From the results, the coefficient of subgrade reaction for a smooth pile embedded in medium dense sand would decrease by (134%) when the lateral pile head deflection (yg) changes from (2% to 5%) of pile diameter.

It is possible to closely simulate the product sizing distribution from an industrial rod mill by the correct choice of parameters in laboratory batch milling. For laboratory batch rod milling, changes in per cent critical speed and per cent rod volume cause the product sizing distributions to move in parallel at a constant slope. For ball milling, larger sized media in batch milling grind more coarse material giving a closer simulation to the industrial rod mill product. Changing the feed size distribution by removal of coarse particles or addition of fine particles changes the product sizing distribution, but would not normally be practiced in laboratory testing. These data should be applicable to many instances where laboratory simulation of an industrial product size distribution is required.

The objectives of the work described in this report are to determine the communications requirements and need for communications, both for voice and control, on longwalls, and to make recommendations for longwall communications equipment and systems. These recommendations are designed to guide the future development of longwall communications. Information necessary for the accomplishment of this work has been gathered by a series of visits to longwall mines and discussions with longwall mine operators, as well as with suppliers of longwall communications and mining equipment and with Bureau of Mines personnel. In addition, it has proven possible, through personal interviews and literature evaluation, to gain an understanding of the experience and attitudes towards longwall communications in countries where longwall mining is far more widespread than in the U.S., namely the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Belgium.

Epoxy and polyester-type resins were injected into coal-mine roof strata of the thick Freeport coal seam in Allegheny County, Pa., at test sites in roof that had been exposed several weeks, in newly exposed roof, and in strata over solid coal. Test results indicate that the method of strengthening bituminous-coal-mine roof by injecting a bonding material into the roof strata can be developed into a safe, efficient support system. If roof bonding will become a standardized method of roof support and reinforcement or if it can be effective when used with other types of roof support can be determined only by extensive experimentation in various coal beds. Observations and conclusions are shown at the end of this report.
