Borehole geophysical logging has developed and improved many measurements for mining exploration in the past decade. Imaging tools such as the acoustic and optical televiewer are now being used to collect real time, high resolution, oriented fracture and bedding data. Drill holes 100’s of meters deep can be processed very quickly using automated structure picking software and borehole core samples can be digitally logged instead of using paper and pencil.

Background: Frictional ignitions continue to be a problem facing the U.S. underground coal mining industry. Many methane igni-tions are associated with the impact of mining machine cutter bits on quartzitic material (e.g., sandstone) during the coal-cutting process. Most ignitions result in small methane-air fireballs often only a few feet in size and limited to the cutter head location. However, under certain conditions, frictional ignitions can lead to larger methane explosions and/or fires with the potential for causing serious injury or death to the mining machine operator and other nearby miners. The requirements for a frictional ignition are a flammable volume of methane-air and an ignition source. This source is usually the hot streak caused by the frictional impact of the mining bit on hard rock, and the frequency of occurrence increases with increased bit wear. Another possible ignition source is the fric-tional impact of rock on rock during a roof fall.

Kidd Mine, an Xstrata Copper operation in Timmins, Ontario, operates a 400 t/h pastefill plant that provides paste backfill to stopes at the depth of 9000 ft. This paper will cover the operating practices of the pastefill plant both on surface and underground, highlighting tailings excavation, paste mix design and the pipe maintenance program. Kidd Mine, une opération d'Xstrata Copper à Timmins, Ontario, opère une usine de remblai d'une capacité de 400 t/h. Le réseau de distribution permet d'acheminer le remblai en pâte juste qu'à une profondeur de 9000 pi. Cet article couvrira le mode opératoire de l'usine de remblai tant à la surface que sous-terre en mettant l'emphase sur l'extraction des rejets miniers, la recette du remblai en pâte ainsi que le programme d'entretient du réseau de distribution.

Résumé La Mine Goldex entrera en production au 2ième trimestre de 2008. Pour permettre une production de l?ordre de 6960 tpj, le forage ITH à une pression de 400 psi (28 bar) à été sélectionné. Il s?agira d?une des premières applications du forage ITH à cette pression sous terre. Cet article traitera des gains anticipés et montrera certains résultats préliminaires. Il sera aussi question du bras manipulateur utilisé pour manipuler les tiges de forage. Abstract The Goldex Mine will start production in the second quarter of 2008. In order to achieve a production of 6960 tpd, ITH drilling at 400 psi (28 bar) was selected. ITH drilling at this pressure will be one of the first underground applications. This paper will discuss the anticipated gains and show some preliminary results. The use of the rod handler will also be discussed.

La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Différentes modifications ont été apportées aux dimensions et orientations des galeries, aux patrons de forage, aux techniques de sautages, au support de terrain, à la séquence de minage et aux méthodes de remblayage. He started as mechanic on construction projects and open pit mines. Early in his career Robert had supervision's responsabilities. He started in open pit operation (QCM) and after in underground operation with Lac Minerals, working at Bousquet, Doyon and Louvicourt mines, as U/G mechanical foreman and mechanical general foreman, and Maintenance superintendant with Cambior . He also experienced the underground mines equipments supplier's side working with Sandvik Canada.

In general, if you do not file a patent application prior to a public disclosure, you will lose rights. Major Types of Intellectual Property In this paper, intellectual property protection is broadly discussed. Practical steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of losing intellectual property rights (and maximizing the possibility of benefiting from your company's intellectual property) are outlined at the end of this paper. The issues discussed in this paper are somewhat complex, because a number of outcomes are possible, depending on the facts. It is strongly recommended that you seek legal advice in your jurisdiction in connection with any particular circumstances relating to intellectual property rights. "Intellectual property" refers to a number of different types of rights. The major types of intellectual property are: (i) patents; (ii) trademarks; and (iii) copyright. Trade secrets are also usually considered to be a type of intellectual property, and they are also discussed in this paper because of their importance. In general, each of these types of intellectual property protects different subject matter, although there can be some overlap. Intellectual property rights are generally territorial in nature. The scope of protection of a type of intellectual property in a country (e.g., patent protection) depends on whether the specific national requirements for protection have been met.

The increasing energy costs associated with mining has become an issue that needs to be addressed for future sustainable production. Vale Inco is undertaking a Ventilation on Demand (VOD) Project in an effort to minimize costs, continue to mine at depth and reduce green house gas emissions. A dynamic VOD system is very complex with potential high risk. Therefore, a systematic approach is being taken for successful development and implementation of the concept. The physical components of the system are currently being tested at various Vale Inco mine sites. While the operability of the physical components are being tested, the strategy for optimizing the architectures of the system is being defined. This presentation discusses the method of developing a VOD system at Vale Inco.
