I. Introduction The experimental work described in this paper was carried out during 1967 and 1968 in an inclined reinforced concrete adit which had been driven during 1965 and 1966 to provide primary access for a new gypsum mine. The new mine was situated near the village of Sherburn-in-Elmet in central Yorkshire in an area of extensive post-glacial plains of deltaic and lacustrine origin. These plains cover a large area of this part of Yorkshire extending inland from the coast for a distance of about 35 miles. The gypsum deposit at Sherburn dates from Permian times and it is considered" to have been associated with the western-most edges of the ancient Zechstein Sea which was also responsible for the formation of the extensive evaporite deposits in north-east Yorkshire. The gypsum deposit, which varies in thickness from 10 to 15 feet, is extremely pure and it occurs quite close to the surface; in the Sherburn area the overburden is only 120 feet thick. The proximity of the deposit to the surface, however, tends to give a somewhat false idea of the magnitude of the problems associated with its extraction. These problems were all related to the nature of the overlying strata. As has already been mentioned, the surface deposits are post-glacial and they consist of an extremely large number of thin layers of varved clays, fine silts and sands extending down to a depth of 75 feet. From the bottom of the post-glacial deposits to the seam, a distance of about 45 feet, the strata consists of a succession of marls, weak sandstones, and siltstones, which although they are inherently incompetent materials, are appreciably stronger

With the aim of solving the large deformation problem of surrounding rock in coal mine roadways with a thin sand-mudstone interbed roof, transportation roadway 1603 in Haoyuan Mine was considered. The failure mechanism of surrounding rock was studied through comprehensive on-site investigations, borehole image analysis, mineral composition analysis, and other means. Numerical simulations were performed to determine the influence of roof layer thickness, lateral pressure coefficient, and coal rib strength on the stability of the interbedded roof. The main reasons for support failure and deformation of the roadway are softening and swelling of the sand-mudstone interbed roof upon exposure to water, insufficient support capacity of the roof due to the soft coal rib, an unreasonable support scheme, or poor construction quality, which can reduce the bearing capacity of surrounding rock. Based on our analysis, a control strategy was devised for a thin coal-mudstone interbed roof. The support scheme combines long and short cable support, strengthening of the coal rib to consolidate the roof, and partially shotcrete grout, and was found to improve the overall mechanical strength of surrounding rock and maintain the stability of the thin sand-mudstone interbed roof. The results of the numerical simulations and monitoring data indicated that the proposed support scheme effectively controls the deformation of the surrounding rock of thin sand-mudstone interbed roof of coal mine roadways while maintaining the safety and stability of the surrounding rock and supporting structure.

With the intensification and expansion of deep coal mining, the surrounding rock stress environment becomes further deteriorated because of the complicated geological environment and powerful mining effect, so the major deformation of roadway appeared frequently. The proportions of floor heave are increasing and , the most serious problem is the floor heave of preparatory workings. The coal seam of Binchang coal area in Shaanxi province is at a depth of 621.6 ~ 817.0 m, the average thickness of the coal seam is 25 m, and the overburden and coal measure strata are the main regional aquifers and are highly permeable. The properties of water-weakening are obvious in the floor strata. The main preparatory workings or chambers were driven in the coal seam. The severe floor heave of the water chamber appeared during early mining and the amount was 180 ~ 910mm, and seriously affected the normal installation and use of the water chamber. Theoretical study and numerical simulation as well as the in-situ measurements were carried out to investigate the deformation and failure characteristic of the surrounding rock with non-support in the floor and the main reasons which caused the floor heave were determined. A new combined support technology was proposed which consists of overcutting, grouting, backfilling and invertedarch and bolt-grouting. The field monitoring showed that the cumulative convergence of the water chamber was 20mm, the maximum convergence speed is 1.2 ~ 2mm/d, the accumulative convergence of two ribs was 36mm and the maximum convergence speed is 2mm/d. The combined support technology will enhance the support intensity between the roof and floor, the two sides of the entry and improve the loading capacity of the floor effectively and the floor heave can be controlled effectively.

Deformation mechanisms in room-dry and water-saturated specimens of Charcoal Granodiorite, shortened at 10-4s-1, at effective pressures (Pe) to 100 MPa and temperatures to partial melting (?1050°C) are documented with a view toward providing criteria to recognize and characterize the deformation for geological and engineering applications. Above 800°C strength decreases dramatically at effective pressures ? 50 MPa and water-weakening reduces strength an additional 30 to 40% at Pe = 100 MPa. Strains at failure are only 0.1 to 2.2 percent with macroscopic ductility (within this range) increasing as the effective pressures are increased and in wet versus dry tests. Shattering (multiple faulting) gives way to faulting along a single zone to failure without macroscopic faulting as ductility increases. Microscopically, cataclasis (extension microfracturing and thermal cracking with rigid-body motions) predominates at all conditions. Dislocation gliding contributes little to the strain. Precursive extension microfractures coalesce to produce the throughgoing faults with gouge zones exhibiting possible Riedel shears. Incipient melting, particularly in wet tests, produces a distinctive texture along feldspar grain boundaries that suggests a grain-boundary-softening effect contributes to the weakening. In addition, it is demonstrated that the presence of water does not lead to more microfractures, but to a reduction in the stresses required to initiate and propagate them.

The present study investigates the dynamic deformation mechanisms of closed-cell aluminium foams during low velocity drop weight impact with experimental analyses and finite element (FE) simulation.The evolution of foam collapse was explored with FE simulation using ABAQUS/Explicit. X-ray computed tomography (XRT) based geometry was reconstructed to understand the actual microstructural changes during impact. The experimenta lstress-strain response was compared with FE simulation with reasonably good agreement observed between FE prediction and experimental data. A vertical cross-sectional XRT slice was analysed at different strains from FE simulation to understand the pore collapse mechanisms.

The South West Rail Link (SWRL) project involved construction of a rail line to service new residential areas in south-west Sydney. The 11 km rail line is conveyed through a short tunnel at shallow depth where it crosses beneath the eight lanes of the Hume Highway. The underpass location is one of the most heavily trafficked within Sydney’s motorway network.The New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (Roads and Maritime), as the owner of the highway asset, had the responsibility of managing the risks to the highway and traffic associated with the tunnelling project from the pretender stage through to completion. This paper considers the primary risks and mitigation measures employed, including geotechnical investigation, and development of appropriate construction constraints and concept design of an extensive real-time survey system to monitor pavement deformation during the tunnel works.The geology comprises fresh Minchinbury Sandstone in the tunnel invert and side walls, and variably weathered Bringelly Shale in the haunch and crown. Few tunnels have been excavated in these rock types in Sydney, and there is little information relating to the in situ stresses and stress-relief deformations in these materials.During tunnel construction the monitoring data indicated unexpected surface heave of up to about 24 mm. A multiparametric back-analysis of the deformation data is presented, which provides information on the deformation mechanisms and key geotechnical parameters, including rock mass modulus and in situ stresses.The approaches and methodologies developed for the SWRL underpass were effective in maintaining the safe operation and traffic capacity of the highway throughout the construction period, and the analysis of the monitoring data provides a useful reference for similar future projects, or projects constructed in similar ground conditions.CITATION:Clarke, S J and Walker, C S, 2014. Deformation processing of rapidly solidified powder alloys presents a technical challenge different in several ways from the processing of ingot based alloys. The metastable phases formed during planar flow casting of aluminum alloy 8009 (FVS0812) must be safe-guarded from high temperature excursions during processing to avoid decomposition; this restriction prohibits liquid phase sintering of particles during consolidation. The development of strong particle-particle adhesion, therefore, relies on the imposition of very large strains during forming operations to insure sufficient mechanical meshing of the aluminum particles and break-up of prior particle oxide boundaries. These strains are generally much greater than those required for metallurgical transformations in ingot based alloys. In an attempt to quantify the deformation required to improve interparticle bonding, the finite element method (FEM) was employed. Preliminary results which predict the metal flow and strain distribution in several workpiece configurations are discussed. These predictions are then correlated to measurements made on experimental subscale forgings. Lastly, experimentally measured quantities which reflect the degree of interparticle bondingg are related back to FEM model predictions.

IT is generally assumed that in most metals and alloys a given tensile stress produces a given deformation irrespective of the length of time during which the stress is applied. This assumption is justified in most of the important engineering applications of metallic materials; however, in the case of some metals and alloys used or tested at temperatures over or slightly under that at which recrystallization can occur the assumption is not warranted.1 This paper deals with the variations of deformation produced by a constant tensile stress acting for varied lengths of time in the special case of thin aluminum alloy sheet of the duralumin type, which had been subjected to different thermal and mechanical treatments. The material investigated was in the form of a sheet approximately 0.002 in. thick, which had been cold-rolled from a thickness of 0.020 in. It has been found that at a sufficiently high constant tension such material deforms continuously with the elapse of time and that the rate at which this deformation occurs is greatly influenced by the previous thermal and mechanical treatments.

In the design of explosives devices, an understanding of the behavior of explosively propelled matter is one of the most important steps in maximize the performance of these devices. For instance, an explosively driven metallic liner in LSCs (Linear Shaped Charges) creates its functional effect of penetration after a finite distance of travel (before collapse), thus the detailed study of the projection mechanism of the flat liner after detonation helps in the optimization of the design of LSCs. In a typical metallic flyer driven by explosive detonation, the detonation gas propels nearby matter including flat flyers. After a certain degree of expansion in the detonation gas, the flat flyer reaches its maximum velocity and slows down afterward. These typical behaviors are well investigated and numerically studied by many researchers. However, the rarefaction intrusion (detonation gas expansion) near the surface of the explosive charge creates significant deformation of the flat flyer , and produces U-shaped bending or deformation near the edge of the flyer during projection, creating unexpected behavior in explosive devices of interest. In this paper, a preliminary investigation of a localized Ushaped deformation of flat metallic flyers during projection is studied utilizing a theoretical approach and computational modeling facilitating an understanding of a general tendency of the deformation behavior.

Since 1980, the Department of Mining Engineering at Kyushu University, in co-operation with the Ikeshima Colliery, Matsushima Coal Mining Co. Ltd., has been conducting a research project into longwall gateroad designs applicable to deep and poor strata conditions. During this period, the economic environment has drastically changed the situation of the domestic coal mining industry. Conventionally, the retreat longwall method, with re-use of gateroad, has been employed as it achieves higher recovery. However, from the view point of production efficiency, this method is not suitable because it requires intensive work in side packing and roadway maintenance. Therefore an interpanel-pillar system, or a two-entry gateroad system, was adopted to identify the factors responsible for excessive vertical closure in longwall gateroads. Field measurements and non-linear finite element analyses were undertaken to confirm the performance of this system. Study results indicate that the stability of the gateroad employing the rib pillar system is comparable to that of the conventional system of re-using Gateroads.

A large number of experiments have been carried out by many workers on the recrystallization of deformed and subsequently annealed metals and alloys. Although observations on single crystals are of great importance in the study of the recrystallization textures of deformed and annealed metals, very little of this work deals with material in this form.Since, in deformed metals, the stress concentration is greatest at the grain boundaries and along the planes of slipping, it is to be expected that recrystallization will start in these regions. For example, in polycrystalline aluminium (1),:1: (2), copper (3), a-iron (4) and brass (5), (6), which had been deformed by cold-rolling, drawing, pressing or stretching and then annealed, the new grains first appeared in the boundaries of the original crystals, whilst in the case of cupronickel (7) and iron (8), recrystallization commenced along the slip planes of the deformed material. In a previous paper of this series (1) ,t it was shown that during the creep of single crystals of lead, deformation proceeded to some extent by means of slip on the octahedral plane. This was demonstrated by the formation of slip lines on the surface of the specimens. At first, a few broad bands appeared after a small amount of extension had taken place; then, as extension proceeded, more and finer lines made their appearance until the whole of the specimen surface was covered.The present paper deals with the process of deformation of the creep specimens as revealed by X-ray examination..By the use of this method, the changes taking place in the crystal structure can be observed.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe method of preparation of the specimens, their size and the purity of the lead employed have been reported elsewhere (1). At frequent intervals, the specimens were dismantled from the test rack and X-ray back reflection photographs were taken. The specimens were so marked and set up on the X-ray machine that the same spot on the specimen surface was always examined.Copper radiation was employed, the tube voltage and current being 45 kV. and 25 m.a. respectively and the exposure time 2 hrs. The slit diameter was 1 mm.

The first part (lH of this work dealt with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformation by creep, as revealed by macroscopical examination. It was shown that when recrystallization commenced, a crystal, termed the primary crystal, started to grow at the edge of the specimen and extended into the body of the specimen along the slip planes. At some stage during the growth of this crystal, other crystals appeared at the boundary of this first crystal and fragments of the parent crystal. From thispoint, recrystallization was accelerated with relatively rapid necking down of the specimen until fracture occurred.All those crystals formed after the primary crystal were given the term secondary crystals. In the present paper is given a detailed account of the orientations of the primary and secondary crystals.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe size of the test pieces and the manner of loading were given in the previous paper (1). X-ray back reflection photographs were taken of the individual primary and secondary crystals and from them were determined the orientations. In spite of the many contributions that have been made to our knowledge of the creep properties of polycrystalline lead, the precise influence of various factors on these properties is not yet fully understood. Indeed, the position is such that several important points in connection with the creep of lead are a matter of controversy. This has been brought about largely by the fact that, in the case of lead, the changes that are produced in the creep behaviour by slight variations of such factors as the purity, grain sizeand previous treatment are out of all proportion to the magnitude of these variations.In order to study the fundamental properties of lead as related to creep, and so gain a more enlightened perspective with which to consider the creep of lead in general, the work that is described in a series of papers, of which the present paper is the third part, has been carried out. It deals with lead in the form of single crystals.It has been shown (1) - (3) that the grain boundaries as well as the actual grains play a part in the creep of polycrystalline lead. The present work, by eliminating grain boundaries, enables the. contribution of the grains themselves to the process of creep, in other words, crystalline creep, to be studied effectively.This object was, possibly, the major one in this work.

The hot deformation behavior of a Mg-9A1-1Zn alloy produced by high pressure die casting has been investigated by means of compression tests in the temperature and strain rate ranges of 125-300°C and 10-5-10-1 s-1 and torsion tests over 150-450°C and 5, 0.5, 0.05 5-1 . The compression samples were deformed in the die-cast state or after homogenization at 415°C for 2 h to evaluate improvements. A premature fracture at 45° with respect to the compression axis was observed in samples strained at low temperatures and high strain rates. The torsion specimens were tested as received or after a predeformation-homogenization treatment. In addition to constitutive analyses suitable for modeling previously published, the results are fitted to a relationship between strain rate normalized by diffusion coefficient and flow stress normalized by modulus. The results fit well with a set of published creep experiments that were conducted in the range of 70-150°C.

The life of refractory linings in rotary cement kilns can be shortened by uneven or inadequate support of the kiln and its shell and by variations in the conditions of operation. Alteration of these factors may, according to their nature, bring about mechanical deterioration of the lining or promote chemical attack. Chemical attack has been described elsewhere. The distortion of cement kilns has been discussed in a general manner by Rochow, who indicates the amount of distortion which may occur in an unlined shell, and by Rosenblad; who states that the deformations of the shell are greatest above the trunnions. The present article indicates the extent of the distortion of a kiln to an oval shape in certain selected positions and the deviation from a straight line of the kiln along its length between two supports. The cement kiln is a long, hollow, rotating cylinder consisting of steel plates which may be either welded or riveted together. This shell is supported on tires, frequently 60 ft apart, which roll on trunnions. The large mass of the kiln causes distortion of its cross-section; it becomes slightly oval, i.e., diameters lengthen as they become horizontal and shorten as they become vertical. There is also a tendency for the shell to bow between supporting tires; this bowing may be upwards or downwards depending on the position of the weight forces and the supports. The extent of the deviations from the ideal kiln shape was investigated.

"The Gold Fields group and Gekko Systems have successfully worked together on multiple projects, including at the St Ives, Agnew and Granny Smith operations in Western Australia, and the Damang operations in Ghana, with gravity recovery design, technology installation and optimisation the key driver on each occasion.In 2014, Gold Fields Australia identified an opportunity to challenge the historical thinking at Granny Smith and reassessed the benefit of upfront gravity gold recovery. The historical approach had been to employ gravity on the tailings stream of the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit, recovering sulfide minerals into a concentrate from spiral concentrators for further liberation of gold via a regrind circuit.Gekko was engaged to assess the implementation of a gravity circuit within the grinding area, and to perform a comprehensive gravity recoverable gold test program. Test data was fed into the AMIRA P420 BCC Gravity Model to confirm the gravity recovery potential of the ore, and for process design basis generation. Height, space and capital limitations proved to be a design challenge. However, collaborative learnings throughout the project ensured the design and operation of a reliable and economic gravity gold circuit. Ultimately, the Granny Smith gravity circuit was a success, satisfying all the project objectives and yielding consistent, measurable benefits. On average, the gravity circuit recovers 33 per cent of total gold, resulting in an increase to overall gold recovery by 0.7 per cent.This paper highlights the key project drivers for Gold Fields, and the development of the Granny Smith free gold gravity circuit. It details application of test work and modelling, and the challenges and learnings encountered during the design, installation and commissioning stages. He closed his shack and hurried north, where a strike had been made. Next he tried to trap the flour gold that floats down the Snake River. He panned the black sands along the Oregon coast. He ranged over the mountains and up the gulches of far-off Alaska. At last, broken in health, six years ago he came back to his old home in Nevada. There his shack still stood-nobody wanted it. One day he started a garden in the rocky soil that he owned. His spade turned up a chunk of quartz, and in that quartz were stringers of gold. He had found a rich gold vein, running right under his own house. You gas producers who have hurried to Oklahoma, Louisiana, East Texas, South Texas, West Texas, even to California to drill wildcat holes a mile or two miles deep-why not, like the old gold prospector, have a look in your own back yard? Some of your coal seams contain 20,000,000 cu. ft. of natural gas per acre.

Methane emissions from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying the mined coalbed can affect safety and productivity in longwall mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels on a longwall operation, gob vent boreholes (GVB), horizontal and vertical drainage boreholes, and their combinations are drilled and used as supplementary methane control measures in many mines. However, in most cases, the types of degasification wellbores chosen are decided based on previous experiences without analyzing the different factors that may affect this decision. This study describes the development of an expert classification system used as a decision tool. It was built using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) type artificial neural network (ANN) structure. The ANN was trained using different geographical locations, longwall operation parameters, and coalbed characteristics as input and was tested to classify the output into four different selections, which are actual degasification designs that US longwall mines utilize. The ANN network selected no degasification, GVB, horizontal and GVB, and horizontal, vertical and GVB options with high accuracy. The results suggest that the model can be used as a decision tool for degasification system selection using site- and mine-specific conditions. Such a model can also be used as a screening tool to decide which degasification design should be investigated in detail with more complex numerical techniques.

In 1981, North American Degerstrom Contracting began gold mining on the Little Rocky Mountain Range, near Zortman, MT. In the past four years, the price of gold has fluctuated from a high of $16/g ($500 per oz) to a low of $9.60/g ($300 per oz). With that kind of a moving target, profitability presents a management challenge. Based in Spokane, WA, Degerstrom employs 85 people at the mine. It is one of the largest heap leach operations in the nation. Last year, 8 Mt (9 million st) of low-grade ore was moved to the leach pads in a two-shift, five-day operation. The current pit being worked produces 218 kt/m (240,000 stpm) of leaching ore. Ore fragmentation critical The gold bearing ore has no defined patterns or seams. It is an igneous intrusion resulting from volcanic activity. It occurs spontaneously throughout the range. To recover the gold, areas are staked out and core samples are taken and analyzed. These data determine if the ore is rich enough to mine. Once mining begins, an average of 150 holes are drilled and blasted on a two-day rotation. Five Ingersoll-Rand T4s drill on a 4- x 4.5-m (14- x 15-ft) spacing to a 7.6-m (25-ft) depth. "When we first came to this site, we drilled on a 3.6- x 3.6-m (12- x 12-ft) pattern," said Paul Baker, superintendent for N.A. Degerstrom Contracting. "We did some experimenting using a high density emulsion in the bottom of the hole and filling the rest with regular Anfo." The high density emulsion saved the company on overall drilling and blasting costs since the holes could be spaced on a wider pattern and still achieve the high degree of fragmentation needed for leaching. Blasting is important because the gold lays in the natural strata of the rock. Also, the ore is not crushed before it goes to the leach pads. So complete fragmentation is critical. Terrain dictates loading/hauling system The shot ore is worked in 6 m (20 ft) benches by two Caterpillar 245 front shovels equipped with 3 m3 (4 cu yd) buckets, a 992C wheel loader with a 12.6-m3 (16.5-cu yd) bucket, and a 988E high lift fed by a D9H. A Caterpillar D10 tractor trap dozes to the loader. According to Baker, the 6 m (20 ft) bench is an efficient lift for the front shovel and the wheel loader. In tight quarters or in a pocket of ore, Degerstrom uses the 245s. For high production areas, the wheel loader is used. The hauling fleet includes 28 Cat 773 off highway trucks. The 45 t (50 st) trucks are seven pass loaded by the 245s with a 25-second cycle time per bucket load. The 992C loads the trucks in two passes in less than 30 seconds. The cycle time is four to five minutes for a 1.2-km (4000-ft) haul on grades that average 10%. Grades, in some places, exceed 16%. "We use the 773s because they have a low weight-to-horsepower ratio - that's what you need in steep country," Baker said. The trucks haul the shot ore to the leach pad. Currently, Degerstrom is working a pad that has a capacity for 5 Mt (5.5 million st) of ore. Building the leach pads The base of the pads resemble a large drainage basin. They take about one month to construct. A 0.3-m (1-ft) layer of impervious bentonite clay is hauled in and leveled by a Cat D9H tractor. A 30-mm (1.2-in.) PVC liner is then laid in place on top of the clay base. It, in turn, is covered with tailings from an old on-site mill. Degerstrom uses the tailings to protect the liner from tears when the ore is dumped. The ore is leveled and built up in 9 m (30 ft) lifts by the D9H. The tractor rips the top layer. Then, a network of plastic irrigation pipe is put in place to distribute a cyanide solution over the surface. The leaching solution percolates through the ore and dissolves the gold. The solution drains from the pads and is pumped to a 22.7-ML (6-million gal) pregnant solution holding pond. The liquid then goes through two separate filtration units. One unit removes entrained solids and the other side adds a zinc dust to precipitate the gold. This is collected on filters. The affluent then returns to a solution holding pond for redistribution through the pipeline network. Typically, 80% of the pad's potential recovery takes place in the first 30 days of leaching. The process stops when the ambient temperature falls below the cyanide's freezing level. And each pad has a leach cycle of four to five years before recovery values decline to a point where further leaching becomes uneconomical. At Zortman, it takes 9 t (10 st) of ore to produce 31 g (1 oz) of gold. It is therefore critical to keep total production costs down and efficiency high.
