Synvolcanic, layered gabbro-anorthosite sills at Rainy Lake, Northwestern Ontario, reflect a combination of igneous processes including fractional crystallization, wall rock assimilation and possibly liquid immiscibility. Chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite mineralization at the base of the Grassy Portage intrusion accumulated by crystallization of a sulphide liquid during cooling. Upward enrichment of Fe and Ti in this intrusion and also in the Bad Vermilion Lake anorthosite complex culminated with the crystallization of lenses of disseminated to massive magnetite+ apatite+ ilmenite+ rutile. Regional low to medium grade metamorphism and accompanying deformation resulted in recrystallization and local remobilization of ore minerals.

The quartz-cassiterite-wolfram veins at the Aberfoyle Tin Mine, north-eastern Tasmania, form a sheeted zone about 200 ft. wide and 1,600 ft. long in slightly contact metamorphosed shales, slates and greywackes, and are associated with a cupola of aplitic granite whose top is about 1,050 ft. below the present surface. Economic mineralization persists from the surface down to a vertical depth of 1,050 ft. to 1,100 ft., dying away in the vicinity of the cupola. Down to the 9-level there is a progressive increase in wolfram content of the veins, and a decline in cassiterite content, with increasing depth.The veins are banded or zoned, with a seivedge of muscovite on the wall. Cassiterite, wolfram and sphalerite occur inside the selvedges, projecting into a core of quartz of varying width. Other sulphides form the central part of some narrow veins, or occur as clots in the quartz. The general sequence of deposition of the ore minerals was: (1) cassiterite, wolfram; (2) arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite; (3) pyrrhotite (in part); (4) blende-group minerals-chalcopyrite, sphalerite, stannite, pyrrhotite (in part)-as solid solutions; (5) galena, tetrahedrite, matildite, native bismuth, scheelite; (6) marcasite and secondary pyrite, magnetite and hematite. The sequence of deposition of the gangue minerals was: (1) fluorine-bearing minerals-muscovite topaz, apatite, triplite, fluorite-more or less contemporaneous with the cassiterite and wolfram;' (2) quartz-contemporaneous with the earlier sulphides; (3) carbonates--contemporaneous with the later sulphides. The stages overlapped somewhat.The composition of the sphalerite and heat treatment experiments with the solid solutions indicate that the blende-group sulphides were deposited at about 6000 C., and cooled rapidly, so that unmixing of the solid solutions was arrested. This accords with the likelihood that the country rock temperature was not above 2000 C. Annealing experiments at between 3500 C. and 6000 C. led to further precipitation from solid solution at the lower temperatures, and to significant segregation by solid diffusion within, a week, indicating that both deposition and cooling of the ore were rapid processes-completed in a matter of days. The Morning Star diorite dyke has been subjected to two periods of mineralization. The earlier, genetically related to the dyke magma, gave rise to a weak chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-pentlandite-gold mineralization in a narrow zone, up to 25 cm. wide, which parallelsthe nearby western (hanging) wall of the dyke. Subsequently a set of conjugate shears formed in the dyke as a result of tectonic movements. Gold-quartz veins formed in these shears giving rise to the classical "ladder veins" of the Morning Star mine. On either side of the veins ("floors") the diorite has been bleached for up to 3 ft. This involved introduction of much CO. and some K"O, and S with abstraction of SiO. and FeO, giving rise to carbonates, sericite, zoisite and pyrite. The veins consist of quartz with minor amounts of albite and carbonate, together with pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, galena, bournonite, boulangerite and gold. Spectrographic analyses of gold show that the suite of trace elements is consistent throughout the mine.INTRODUCTIONThe gold-quartz veins of the Morning Star Gold Mine, at Wood's Point, Victoria, are a classic example of the "ladder vein" type of deposit. The structure of this series of repeating quartz veins or "floors", some barren and some productive, occurring in a set of conjugate shears which transect a "dyke bulge" of diorite (Fig. 1), has been described on numerous occasions as mining has progressed and figures in the textbooks (Whitelaw, 1905; 1916; Junner, 1920; Lindgren, 1933; McKinstry, 1935; 1942; 1949; Kenny, 1949; Hills, 1952; Clappison, 1953) ; but there has been no study of the mineralization apart from that in Junner's (1920) general study of the Walhalla-Wood's Point Goldfield, made at a time when mining had not developed below the 400 ft. level,. and the mine was dormant.

"The mineralization behaviors of typical fluxes are studied by investigating the microstructures with optical microscope. The results show that the reactions begin with between iron ore and lime, limestone with small particle to form primary liquid. Then coarse limestone, dolomite and serpentine take part in reaction under the action of primary liquid. Limestone is the easiest to mineralization, next dolomite, and the last is serpentine. The higher basicity and smaller fluxes size favor the mineralization process of dolomite and serpentine.IntroductionThe purposes of adding fluxes into sintering are that:(1) to increase the basicity of sinter, so as to reduce even eliminate addition fluxes into BF(blast furnace) and decrease the coke ratio of BF[1,2]. (2) to decrease the melting point of sintering mixture to ensure sintering can be carried out at a lower temperature and reduce the energy consumption. (3) to improve the qualities of sinter by forming binding phase with iron ore fines [3].Flux is another significant component for sinter besides iron ore, especially for high basicity sinter[4]. The proportion of flux is usually higher than 10% in sinter mixture(excluding return mine).There were many reports about the influence of the flux types on sintering, such as limestone, dolomite, lime and so on[5-7]. It is very important to choose suitable fluxes for iron ore sintering. Although the effect of flux size on sintering also has been researched, the mineralization behaviors of the fluxes in the sintering process has not been illuminated. The paper will study the mineralization behavior of fluxes in sintering."

Scattered outliers of the Chibougamau Formation and the more continuous Mistassini and Otish Groups lie unconformably on an Archean basement abutting the Grenville Front. All the Aphebian rocks are deformed and offset by faulting related to the Front. The older Chibougamau Formation is exclusively elastic in origin, whereas the two later, time-equivalent groups include carbonatedominated (Mistassini) and elastic (Otish) sequences. Known syngenetic mineralization within these formations is limited to various radioactive showings in the Mistassini and Otish elastics, and the iron formations of the upper Mistassini Group. Three distinct types of epigenetic mineralization occur within the sedimentary rocks; pitchblende fracture fillings in all types of rocks in the Otish Group, widespread Mississippi-Valley type galenasphalerite showings at certain levels in the Mistassini Group, and chalcopyrite-pyrite bearing veins in or near argillaceous horizons of the Mistassini Group and Chibougamau Formation. The Otish elastic basin is part of a large area of the central Ungava peninsula which contains a variety of radioactive showings, the most promising being of the unconformity type, The final control for many individual showings appears to be local physico-chemical changes within faults and fracture zones. The overall structural control is in part supplied by the faulting episode related to the Grenville Front, which in turn limits the mineralization to the depth zone appropriate for open fracturing. The lead-zinc showings exhibit a strong stratigraphic control as well as close ties to secondary porosity developed by f aulting. The ore solutions were probably derived during the low grade metamorphism of the formations. Chalcopyrite- pyrite veins have provi ded the only mine production (Icon Mine) to date. They appear later than the low-grade metamorphic fluid circulation, and deposition is related to favourable structures and stratigraphy. The veins are clearly related to major faults. Thus, whereas stratigraphic settings appropriate to individual types of deposits are important, an overall structural setting may be demonstrated for a wide range of mineralizations. Detailed structural interpretations of individual showings may be the most fruitful pursuit in developing a concrete prospecting model.

The Pb-Zn ore bodies in the Pine Point district are localized in paleo-solution structures that developed as the result of post-middle Givetian subaerial exposure of the carbonate barrier complex. Sulfides are concentrated in transgressive pale-solution structures that acted as natural bypasses between aquifers and loci for mixing of fluids of different character, one of which contained metals and the other reduced sulfur. Complex ore textures indicate rapid early sulfide precipitation followed by slower sulfide growth. Evidence for both sulfide-carbonate equilibrium and disequilibrium conditions suggest fluctuations in ore fluid composition. District and ore body metal distribution patterns may reflect the nature and movement of mineralizing fluids.

Two outstanding features of the world's young orogenic belts are their very consistently developed suites of volcanic rocks and, it is now recognized, the rather distinctive types of mineralization they contain. Further,it is now known that these volcanic suites exhibit evolutionary patterns, and it is beginning to appear that this evolution in style of igneous activity is accompanied by a parallel evolution in style of mineralization. Specifically,podiform chromite and stratiform pyritic copper ores of Alpine ultramafic/submarine tholeiite association progressively give way to more zincian stratiform ores associated with andesites and dacites, "porphyry copper"deposits developed in quartz dioritic to dacitic plugs, and lead-zinc stratiform ores related to increasingly pyroclastic, rbyodacitic volcanism.This "coupling" is exhibited well in the volcanic arcs - the young orogenic zones-of the SW Pacific which, with tbeir abundance of youthful and commonly unmetamorphosed materials provide an opportunity for investigating, through a petrochemical approach, the possible significance of ores in the elucidation of mechanisms of lava formation. It is suggested as a working hypothesis that in the orogenic (voleanic arc) regime ores are associated with the cale-alkaline rocks because these cale-alkaline rocks are in part generated by exhalative loss, and the ores are among the manifestations of tbat loss.

Numerous mineral deposits of somewhat limited extent and grade are associated with most of the Tertiary granitic intrusions in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. The Silver Star area in southwestern Washington is typical of many of these small, and at the present time, economically marginal mineralized areas. Small but fairly high grade deposits of copper, lead, and zinc sulfides are found within the borders of a small granodiorite stock, and in surrounding Tertiary volcanics. This paper will discuss these deposits and their genetic relationships with the intrusion.

Structures along the rift were subjected to episodic reactivation. Major north-northeast-trending high-angle normal or reverse faults and northwest-trending trans-current fault systems, may exercise control over ore-forming processes. Gabbro and basalt are the dominant igneous rock types. Carbonatite and kimberlite occur in Nebraska and Kansas. Concentrations of Cu, Ni, Co, Ti, Au, Ag and PG-minerals are known to occur in this setting Arkosic sandstone, siltstone, shale and minor carbonate units occur on top of the rift basalts and in flanking basins where they may reach thicknesses of 10 km. The potential for stratiform or unconformity-related metal liferous deposits must be considered.

GEOLOGISTS who are acquainted with the mines of northeastern Mexico realize that the most important lead-silver replacement deposits of the province are confined to a single formation. But since the formation is several hundred meters thick, the author has determined the relative position of the lead mantos in the belief that this information will prove useful in the search for new mines. This article describes the stratigraphic location of lead-silver replacement deposits known in several mines situated in a region comprising part of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. The area studied extends for 200 km* (125 miles) from east to west and 70 km (45 miles) north to south.

Drill cores from uranium roll-front deposits, hosted in lower Cretaceous strata, were examined from the proposed Dewey Burdock in-situ uranium recovery site in the northern part of the Edgemont uranium district, South Dakota. Uraninite (UO2), coffinite U(SiO4)0.9(OH)0.4, and doloresite (H8V6O16) occur as pore-occluding cements within the Fall River Formation in the Dewey area. In contrast, within the Lakota Formation in the Burdock area, uranium (with very little vanadium) is absorbed onto woody fragments and amorphous carbonaceous material in pressure-solution seams. Both areas have typical uranium roll-front mineralogy with 0.5 wt. % pyrite in the reduced solid phase and no pyrite in the oxidized solid phase. The groundwater at the ore zone is not oxygenated, so the uranium is relatively insoluble. Uranium in solution in ground waters is <10µg/L at Dewey and <22 µg/L at Burdock. Micromineralogic and geochemical data are being used to understand water/rock interactions, uranium distribution and movement, and as input factors for predictive reactive transport models.

Weathered mine waste consists of oxidized primary minerals and chemically unstable secondary phases that can be sources of readily soluble metals and acid rock drainage. Elevated concentrations of metals such as Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn are observed in deionized water-based leachate solutions derived from complex sedex and Cu-Pb-Zn mine wastes. Leachate (USGS FLT) from the Elizabeth mine, a massive sulfide deposit, has a pH of 3.4 and high concentrations of Al (16700 ug/L), Cu (440 ug/L), and Zn (8620 ug/L). Leachate from the sedex Faro mine has a pH of 3.5 and high concentrations of Al (2040 ug/L), Cu (1930 ug/L), Pb (2080 ug/L), and Zn (52900 ug/L). In contrast, higher-pH leachates produced from tailings of polymetallic vein deposits have order of magnitude lower metal concentrations. These data indicate that highly soluble secondary mineral phases exist at the surface of waste material where the samples were collected. Sulfide minerals from all sites exhibit differential degrees of weathering, from dissolution etched grain rims, to rinds of secondary minerals, to skeletal remnants. These microscale mineral-dissolution textures enhance weathering and metal leachability of waste material. Besides the formation of secondary minerals, sulfide grains from dried tailings samples may be coated by amorphous Fe-Al-Si minerals that also adsorb metals such as Cu, Ni, and Zn.

The investigations on chemical composition, mineral composition, embedded figures, texture and microstructure of chrome ores were conducted systematically byvariousanalysismethodssuch aschemical analysis, XRF, SEM, and MLA 650 system. The results showed that there are 92.66% chromite and a small amount of chlorite and forsterite as the main mineral compositions, the content of quartz is very low. Elements as Cr and Fe are almost all present in chromite. The content of Cr O is 41.84% and Cr O /FeO is 2.1. The main ele- 2 3 2 3 ments in the chromite are Cr, Fe, Mg, Al, O; the main elements in the chlorite are Mg,Al,Si,OandasmallamountofFe;themainelementsintheforsteriteareMg, Si and O. On the basis of clarifying the mineralogical characteristics, to produce high-grade alloy, this ore should not be separately put into the submerged arc furnace without pretreating. However, it also seems to be difficult to separate the gangue compositions by the conventional physical upgrading methods, such as magneticseparationandgravityseparation.So,chemicalmineralprocessingshould be taken into account. Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) are excellent metal resources. Mineralogical characteristics of different components in WPCBs were analysed in this study. Organic-enriched particles, fibreglass-enriched particles, associated particles and metal-enriched particles were obtained by density gradient method. Subsequently, the elemental composition, morphology, dissociation characteristics, functional group composition and phase composition of different components were analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM+EDS), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Elemental analysis results show that Cu is mainly contained in metal-enriched particles. SEM+EDS analysis results demonstrate that ideal dissociation can be achieved when the WPCBs are broken to -1 mm. Organic matter particles are enriched with carbon and oxygen elements, while fibreglass particles and associated particles mainly contain Al and Si elements, verified by XRD analysis. FT-IR results show that hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups exist widely in all components, caused by widespread organic matter. This study reveals the important properties of different components in WPCBs, which is of great significance for the subsequent separation process. Quartzite is a common feedstock used for the production of silicon by reduction at high temperatures in a submerged electric arc furnace. Silica fume, formed as a by-product in this process, contains crystalline silica in the respirable fraction. The crystalline silica in the fume represents entrained quartz derived from unreacted quartzite raw material within the furnace. A knowledge of the fragmentation of quartzite feedstock, in response to thermal disaggregation in the furnace, is important in feedstock selection to help minimise (a) the amount of crystalline silica in fume, critical from an occupational health and safety perspective, and (b) impurity levels necessary to achieve the highest possible purity of product silicon. In this study, a series of quartzites has been assessed in terms of the above requirements and correlations drawn between mineralogical and chemical characteristics. Alkaline solubility correlates with grain-size and level of stored strain in the quartz matrix. Grain-size affects the surface area available for attack while stored strain enhances the chemical reactivity of the strained matrix as well as profoundly influencing the disaggregation and microfracturing characteristics of strained grains and, hence, available surface area for chemical reaction.

An oolitic iron ore from Gara Djebilet, Algeria was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrosopy and the phosphorus distribution between various phases studied. Two ore types were identified – a haematite-dominated, oolitic type and a more massive, magnetite-dominated type. The haematite-dominated ore had a higher phosphorus content, up to 0.6% in the iron oxide minerals, than the magnetite-dominated type (0.3% P). Owing to the very fine-grained texture of the gangue minerals, reducing the phosphorus content to levels suitable for steelmaking (below 0.05% P) by conventiobal means would entail an energyintensive process with a high carbon footprint. Preliminary leaching test work using a sulphurous geothermal water as lixiviant, assisted by solar thermal acceleration, gave very promising results, removing 0.13% of the residual P (or 21.7% removal of total P) from the high-phosphorus oolitic ore.

The polymetallic W-Pb-Bi-Ag ore from the ?Nova jama? ore zone of the Rudnik ore field have been investigated. Contact-pneumatolytic (skarn), pneumatolytic-hydrothermal, and hydrothermal mineralization phases are defined in this ore zone. The most significant mineralization phase that gave compact ore bodies is pneumatolytic-hydrothermal phase. A relatively pure Mo-free scheelite is the only tungsten-bearing mineral. Lead minerals are mostly presented by Pb-Bi sulphosalts and much less with galena. The image analysis coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS) analysis on a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was applied to the characterization of a W-Pb-Bi-Ag ore as an efficient tool for mineral quantification. Results of EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectrometry) analyses gave the empirical formulae: Pb1.91Ag0.05Cu0.08Bi1.93S5 for cosalite, Pb0.98Ag0.03Cu0.05Bi1.99S4 for galenobismutite and galena Pb0.99Ag0.03S.

Samples have been taken from a two-stage industrial gold roaster treating a pyrite/pyrthotite/arsenopyrite concentrate, in order to describe the mineral- ogy, composition and surface area of the calcines. Sulfides oxidised to produce a porous magnetite in the first stage and a porous hematite in the second, pyrite predominantly roasted via a pyrrhotite intermediate. Sulfur was eliminated in both the first and second stages whereas arsenic was eliminated in the first but retained in the second, partly as rims on hematite particles. The finer sized particles from the cyclones and electrostatic precipitator, whilst having the greatest surface area, were the most refractory with respect to gold solubilization, probably as a result of incomplete decomposition (through short-circuiting) in the first stage, and through a combination of factors such as overheating and entrapment of sub-micro- scopic gold in the second stage.

An ore microscopic and geochemical study of the nickel-cobalt occurrence in the Southeast Missouri Mining District has revealed several significant relationships. Siegenite [(Ni,Co)3S4] is the dominant nickel-cobalt sulfide in the ores, however, several other members of the thiospi¬nel group (AB2S4) occur: carrollite (CuCo2S4), nickelean carrollite [(Co,Ni,Cu)3S4], fletcherite [Cu(Ni,Co)2S4] and polydymite (Ni 3S4). In addition, bravoite [(Ni,Fe)S2], vaesite (NiS2), millerite (NiS) and gersdorffite (NiAsS) are present. Thiospinel composition varies dramatically within the district. Paragenetic studies have shown that the stratigraphically lowest thiospinels are the most cobalt-copper-rich. A detailed ore microscopic study of the AMAX Lead Company Buick mine has also shown significant changes in mineralogical association, texture and grain size of the siegenite along the north-south strike of the major ore bodies. Siegenite commonly replaces and veins chalcopyrite and is subsequently replaced by sphalerite. Less commonly, siegenite and chalcopyrite are observed to form linear replacements along sphalerite grain boundaries. The grain size of the siegenite varies markedly, but in a predictable north-south pattern that is consistent with a genetic model formulated from geo-chemical data. The compositional as well as textural trends displayed by the thiospinel mineralization could be exploited to optimize recovery of any or all thiospinels of economic interest.
