The offshore Maui gas/condensate field was discovered by Shell BP and Todd on Services Limited in 1969. Subsequent appraisal drilling and negotiations with the Government led to a development agreement, æThe Maui White Paper' being concluded in 1973. Part of this agreement provided for the Government to take a 50 per cent shareholding in the field. The field is comprised of a double domed anticlinal structure containing two gas reservoirs at depths ranging from 2700 - 3000 m. Water depth is 110 m. The development plan called for two standalone steel platforms to be installed sequentially over a period of some years depending on gas demand. The first platform (MPA) was put in place in 1976 but difficulties were experienced with piling and drilling of the 12 (later increased to 14) wells did not start until 1978. First gas was piped ashore late in 1979.

BEFORE entering into the statistical part of this article, some general comments may be ln order. Each important war seems to introduce a new atmosphere and a new epoch. The Civil War led to the period of great interior development in North America, of the transcontinental railroads, and of large-scale manufactures. The first World War introduced the general use of the automobile, the building of a huge network of highways, the radio, and household engineering. Now I expect World War II also to introduce some new ways of living. Transocean aviation will become a commonplace; we shall probably have much more of an eye to our military and naval establishments and be more conscious of Eastern Hemisphere affairs instead of thinking so exclusively of the Western. Each war has also multiplied government expenditures and taxes; and to this rule the present one will certainly be no exception.

Overexposure to hazardous noise has been found in most mining sectors, with up to 100% of the surveyed workforce experiencing a noise dose over the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure level (PEL). As a result, miners show elevated rates of hearing impairment of 70-90% by retirement age. To help manage noise exposures, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software and implementation guide for use by mine management and safety personnel. The software relies on a time-motion study that profiles the worker?s daily activities. Observations about the worker?s location and tasks or other activities are recorded along with the start and end time, to determine the duration of the tasks, so they can later be matched up with the noise data. The software gives the user the option of assessing dose relative to the MSHA PEL, the Action Level or the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit. The software generates a variety of interactive onscreen displays showing where, when, and how the worker?s noise dose accumulated. It also can generate customizable printed reports. These outputs can be used to highlight the tasks, locations, and times that are associated with the greatest amount of the worker?s noise exposure. DOSES simplifies the record keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies and worker noise exposures, so mine management can make engineering noise control or administrative control decisions to limit the noise over-exposure of their workers.

The securing of a reliable water supply for a prospective mine in the North West Queensland Mineral Province is usually one of the most influential factors in determining the mine's feasibility. The Ernest Henry Mine required a reliable water supply to serve a demand estimated at feasibility stage to be up to 20 ML/day. Numerous options were considered before a decision was made to construct a 113 km long pipeline from Lake Julius as this was the most cost effective, reliable source of supply. The North West Queensland Water Pipeline is a multi-user, Queensland government funded project initially supplying up to 7000 ML/year of water from Lake Julius to Ernest Henry Mine, with provision made for expansion to serve future users in the region. This paper discusses the history of the pipelineÆs development, together with a summary of the scheme's design features. Environmental and licensing requirements, construction and operational issues are also discussed.

It has been suggested that we at the University of Arizona present a paper covering the origin, philosophy, and results of the College of Mines program in the field of computers and operations research. I have worked with the program since its beginning, and I will try to outline the developments as they have taken place. The formal development of the educational and research program in the field of Operations Research and Computer Applications at the College of Mines, University of Arizona, began in early 1957. During the year, the University offered its first formal instruction in computer programming. This was my first introduction to computers, and it did not take long to realize that this new tool had a potential that could be profitably utilized by the mining industry. In March 6f 1957, the University Computing Center began operations with its IBM 650 computer. This machine was the only computer of this size in the local area at this time, The first programming effort was in machine language and the programming cost could only be justified for repetitive-type of problems. The progress in the computer field moved very rapidly and with the development of the many compiler and assembly programs and the addition of sub routines to the computer library, the scope of problems that could profitably be investigated by computers expanded rapidly.

The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project. A combination of lateral and vertical development methodologies and equipment, including drill jumbos, mechanised raise climbers and specialised ground support equipment, have proven successful in the development of a quality ore handling system.CITATION:Pasek, I, Firdausi, H and Chenier, T, 2016. I will add a few facts about the use and development of the Osterberg Test Load Cell and my association with Jorj. I first met Jorj in 1965 when the Guild Construction Co. drove 12" diameter cast-in-place shell piles for him at the Marquette Cement Co. in Nashville, Tennessee. When I met Jorj at the DFI Trustee's meeting in 1985 at Longboat Key, Florida, he showed me a sketch of his idea about using a test cell at the bottom of a caisson to test the end bearing and side friction on a caisson. He had made a successful trial test in Case International's equipment yard and wondered whether a similar device could be made for a driven pile. At first I was skeptical that it could be done but after thinking about it overnight I told him I felt it was feasible and we would do some work on it. At that time, there was a large bridge job going out for bid in Rhode Island using 14" square prestressed concrete piles'. Based on a record of the Guild Construction Co. Inc. driving over 3,000,000 feet of piling on work for the State of R.I., we felt we would have an excellent chance to be allowed to use them so we designed, detailed and fabricated three for 14" square prestressed concrete piles. As things worked out, we did not test them on this job and have not to date.

Outokumpu Tara Mines located near Dublin, Ireland is Europe's largest producer of lead and zinc concentrates. To reduce dewatering costs and to improve environmental and working conditions, elimination of the lead concentrate thermal dryer was required. This paper describes the development and implementation of the pressure ceramic technology at Tara to replace a conventional vacuum filter/oil-fired dryer system. In 1996 the pressure ceramic filter dewatered 66,600tonnes of lead concentrate, producing a cake at 6 % moisture. Substantial operating cost savings have been realized. Commissioning of a second pressure ceramic filter to handle over 300,000 tonnes/year of zinc concentrates is scheduled for the first quarter of 1997.

  This paper describes the design and construction of the upper section of the Pike River Mine Access Road. The road extends 11 km from Logburn Road alongside Big River on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand up Pike Stream to the new mine portal on White Knight Stream (Figure 1). This new road starts on alluvial terraces, then partially follows an old logging road before entering virgin bush and traversing the true left bank of a steep sided gorge on Pike Stream some 50 - 100 m above the stream before dropping down to the mine entrance. Its development has been an extended process from route selection, consenting through to design and construction.   The paper focuses on the 1 km section of road between the Amenities Area (Figure 1) and the portal. This section of road is a steep section through the gorge, principally on Conservation estate, and has presented the most challenges and required the greatest effort to obtain the regulatory approvals, prepare the design and to construct. This paper outlines the history of the challenges faced and how the road was successfully developed.

Raise boring is a critical aspect of mining at Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO). MICO’s internal raise boring department regularly develops ventilation rises, orepasses and stope cut-off rises and reams approximately 2500 m per annum. Developed, trialled and implemented as standard practice over the past two years, procedural changes in constructing the raise bore machine’s foundations have significantly reduced operator exposure to raise boring’s inherent risks of working around open holes and manual handling. An additional cost benefit of this newly-adopted procedure is derived from reducing the likelihood of damaging the machine while de-rigging.When conforming to standard industry raise boring practices, exposure to an open hole begins when the reamer breaks through the concrete pad and ends when it is removed from the hole – a process which, depending on the size of the hole and the raise boring machine, can take up to three days to complete. Although wearing fall restraint equipment, operators working on and around the raise bore machine during de-rigging are continually exposed to the risk of falling from heights. In contrast, MICO’s newly-developed and successfully-implemented presink raise boring system reduces this exposure to a maximum of four hours, regardless of hole size. Exposure to manual handling hazards is also substantially reduced as the presink procedure eliminates manual placement of a 100 kg drill bit under the machine to commence pilot-hole drilling. Outcomes of implementing the presink System at MICO have been so beneficial that it is now standard procedure for all reaming in excess of 1 m diameters.

During the last 12 years the dominant theme at Mount Isa has been production expansion. Production rate of 3,200 tons per mine day in 1953 increased to 11,000 tons per mine day in 1960, completing the first stage of the programme. The second stage is still in progress. It is planned to increase production of lead and copper ores to 19,500 tons per mine day in 1968.Current mine workings comprise an area 2 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, the deepest production level being 2,000 ft below surface. During the next 10 years it is anticipated that mining will be carried out to a depthof 3,200 ft below the surface. The rapid extension of the mine has necessitated frequent re-appraisals and modifications to the primary ventilation system, and a system with considerable in-built flexibility has gradually evolved. Since 1953, volume circulation has increased eight-fold to approximately 2,400,000 c.f.m.To suit various mine operating requirements, a combined pressure-exhaust system of ventilation was adopted.The usefulness of this system is at a maximum when the fans installed permit ready changes in the location of the boundary between adjacent spheres of fan influence.Air flow through openings to the surface can be controlled or used as required. This feature is considered necessary for a mine where underground workings are comparatively shallow and caving to the surface willoccur.A major heat problem exists due to climate conditions, high geothermic gradient (one degree Fahrenheit in 95 ft), and oxidation in leached and brecciated areas.Because of this, quantities of air far in excess of the minimum requirements for dust removal are required to ensure satisfactory environmental conditions. In assessing fan pressure, consideration was given to 1. the mine resistance, and the requirement for pressure differential capability,2. the pressure requirement for deeper mining, with due allowance for booster fan use where appropriate,and3. the desire to avoid fan operation at pressure duties above the region of peak fan efficiency.The latter feature provides a safety margin between maximum operating pressure and the stall point of the fan.

A contract for three 20 ft diameter vertically mounted axial flow fans of the same aerodynamic design, was placed by Mount ]sa Mines Limited in 1963. The hydraulic blade pitch changing mechanism, the method of blade fabrication, and the roll out centre casings are features of these fans. Protection devices and fan control are designed for unattended operation and remote control. The erection and commissioning of the fans during 1964-65 is described.

Minnovare identified the potential to improve production drilling outcomes in underground long-hole stopes through the adaptation of new technology which was under ongoing development. An approach to Evolution Mining resulted in the companies agreeing to a collaborative agreement to further develop the technology for use on underground long-hole drilling equipment. During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing setup/alignment process was compared to the new technology system with the following observations: • Using the existing process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/ 300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. • The new technology was proven to limit rig setup/alignment error, reducing average blasthole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: • Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. • This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). • With the system implemented as standard practice following results of the FY18 trial and continued success, overall dilution for full year FY19 showed continued reduction to 12% Evolution has continued use of the new technology at Cracow, where the improved accuracy has allowed the extraction of narrower stopes where drilling accuracy is critical. Evolution has also deployed the technology at the Mungari operation and has stipulated that the contractor use the technology at the Mt Carlton operation, which is currently under development. Future implementation of the Development Optimiser system should be verified by commencing additional trials to include a larger data base for validating the initial trial results.

Henderson Operation’s underground molybdenum mine has been in production since 1976. Since that historic date, more than one billion pounds of moly has been produced, and over 120 Mt of ore extracted from three different levels and many different panels. The safe and successful operation of Henderson has been, and will continue to be, dependent on utilising an increasingly sophisticated fleet of equipment, advanced designs, innovative mining techniques, best practices in maintenance processes, improvements in crushing and conveying systems, and most importantly, the training and mentoring of the underground staff. These ‘professional mining technicians’ have been essential in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the underground mine and convey systems, and will drive the continuous improvements needed to keep Henderson competitive in the growing global market.CITATION:Callahan, M, Mahon, J and Rizzardi, C, 2016. "This paper discusses the project history, process design and layout of the Rainy River Gold Project mill. The circuit consists of a 55 x 83 primary crusher, 15 MW SAG mill and 15 MW ball mill. Both mills are twin pinion with LSS and VFD drives. A pebble crusher is located in the process plant with bypass and stockpile options. Gravity concentration followed by 30 hours of leach residence, carousel CIP, carbon recovery, cyanide destruction and tails disposal in a 1,428 hectare tailings management area (TMA).The Rainy River Gold Project is located approximately 65 km northwest of Fort Frances in north western Ontario. The project is scheduled to be commissioned and reach commercial production in mid-2017. Expected cost is $US877M and is comprised of an open pit mine, process plant, tailings management area and supporting infrastructure. Construction of the Ranger uranium project, located 230 kms east of Darwin in the Northern Territory, Australia, commenced in January 1979. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) was incorporated in February 1980 to acquire all the rights in the project. The total cost to ERA of these rights was A$407 million, made up of A$125 million in cash to the Federal Government and the issue of 125 million A$1.00 shares at par, plus a payment of A$16 million in cash to each of Peko-Wallsend Ltd. (Peko) and EZ Industries Ltd. (EZ). ERA's cash requirements to complete the project were estimated in October 1980 to be A$553 million. Project loans, secured by first ranking debenture stock, were arranged for a total of US$390 million, while second-ranking debenture loans totalling A$60 million were [ ] obtained from the vendors, Peko and EZ. Overseas participants (power utilities who had agreed to purchase uranium yellowcake under contract) arranged to take up 25% of the equity capital for A$102.5 million; Peko and EZ were allotted 30.5% each as satisfaction of vendors' consideration; and 14% representing A$57.5 million was issued to Australian residents in an underwritten public flotation in November, 1980. The loan and equity financing arrangements required the successful resolution of many complex and interlocking factors, including technical and economic feasibility, agreement with Aboriginal interests, compliance with Government policies, and securing of sales contracts.

The Rapidex continuous drill and blast tunneling concept utilizes a unique spiral blasting pattern that permits efficient performance with relatively small single shots, while at the same time directing major blast fragments at right angles to the tunnel axis. The concept's self-shielding geometry permits the design of a lightly shielded machine that can stay at the tunnel face firing frequent small blasts to provide rapid, virtually continuous advance. This paper describes Phase III of the development program (supported under Bureau of Mines contract H0252047) in which the "front end" of the machine?drilling loading, and shooting components, together with the shield--was fabricated and field tested underground at the White Pine Copper mine, Michigan. One of the major accomplishments of the Phase III effort was to develop a fully remote controlled loading and initiation system in which explosive slurry is pushed, through a hose into the blasthole by a small water-driven piston carrying the blasting cap. The cap is ignited via an induction coil just prior to entry into the borehole, after which a delay permits complete -withdrawal and shielding of the loading hose. The ultimate objective of the present Bureau-sponsored program is to evaluate the feasibility of mechanizing hard rock mining operations, such as development to a point where drilling, loading, shooting, and mucking can proceed simultaneously and result in increased productivity.

INTRODUCTION The principal object of this paper is to present data on the development of the revolving convex round table as a concentrator for the through 0.07-mm. slimes from the ores of the Butte district, although same brief notes on the earliest recorded use of this type of concentrating table in the ore-dressing plants of the Lake Superior region and of the Butte district are also presented. The revolving convex round table belongs to the class of concentrating tables known as film-sizing tables, these tables using the relative transporting power of a film, or thin sheet of water, as it flows over a quiet inclined surface, to separate the minerals of a sorted product.

The Salobo Project will be the first Vale operation to use an HPGR mill to process copper-gold ore. The mine is located in Para state, southeast of the Amazon region in Brazil. The circuit was designed to treat 12 million metric tons per year of finely disseminated sulphide ore with high hardness. The comminution circuit comprises a gyratory primary crusher, secondary crushing utilizing two cone crushers, two 2 x 1.5 m HPGR operating in closed configuration with 6 mm screens, followed by two 26 x 40 ft ball mills. The concentration circuit consists of two rougher flotation stages using mechanical cells, regrinding with vertical mills, three cleaner stages with columns and one cleaner scavenger stage in mechanical cells. The concentrate is dewatered, filtered and transported by trucks and train to the port, to be exported. The circuit was designed on the basis of data obtained from a comprehensive laboratory and pilot plant campaign. The ore variability was assessed through simulation using data from a drilling core characterization program. The start-up of the industrial plant is planned for 2011. This paper describes the main aspects of circuit design, as well as information related to the beginning of the project construction.
