INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada's maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. INTRODUCTION Sublevel mining is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of the blasted ore and the caved overlying waste rock mass. As with any other mining method, sublevel caving has advantages and dis¬advantages which must be carefully considered and evaluated. The major advantages of sublevel caving are dis¬cussed as follows: Because all of the mining activities are executed in or from relatively small openings, sublevel caving is one of the safest mining methods. Drifts, which are the pri¬mary working places, are distributed in a uniform pat¬tern on all levels. Normally the maximum dimensions of the sublevel drifts are about 5 m wide and 3.7 m high. The transportation drifts can have the same section, or the height may be increased to about 4.5 m when trucks are loaded in the transport drifts. The stability and safety of such drifts in competent rock can be easily controlled by smooth blasting or by a combination of smooth blasting with shotcreting. In less competent rock masses, stability can be achieved by combined reinforc¬ing, for example, by a combination of smooth blasting, shotcreting, and rockbolting. The major mining activities can be broken down into three groups: drifting and reinforcing; ore fragmenta¬tion, i.e., production drilling and blasting; and ore draw¬ing, loading, and transportation, and all are relatively simple. Because of the repetitive nature of the mining system, one can standardize almost completely all min¬ing activities. This means that a high degree of work efficiency can be achieved. Because the components of mining production in sublevel caving can be standardized, a high degree of mechanization is possible. In modern sublevel caving the sections of drifts and tunnels are sufficiently large to allow the introduction of large trackless mining equip¬ment. The advantages of a trackless system can be then broadly utilized not only for direct mining but also for all services, including the transportation of mining per¬sonnel to the working place. The flexibility of mining is very good. Standardiza¬tion and specialization of mining activities and equip¬ment on separate levels (lower level or levels in de¬velopment, upper level or levels in production mining) together with the trackless system yield a high degree of flexibility. This allows a rapid start-up of mining and good flexibility in making production rate changes. The method lends itself to good work concentration, organization, and working conditions. Normally, on the lower levels, various phases of development are under¬way. Upper levels are in various stages of extraction. Therefore the work can be easily organized into a sys¬tem which excludes interference between mining activi¬ties. Safety of mining (in small dimension openings), good work organization, high mechanization using large modern mining equipment, etc., comprise very good working conditions. Naturally such a system enables a high work concentration and rationalization of separate specialized mining activities and therefore mining by sublevel caving can be effective and relatively in¬expensive. The major disadvantages of sublevel caving, on the other hand, are: There is a relatively high dilution of the ore by caved waste. Various types of ore loss can occur. When the ex¬traction limit (that point yielding the maximum accept¬able amount of dilution) is reached, the remaining highly diluted ore represents an ore loss. Some ore is lost in passive zones located on the level of extraction between the active zones of the gravity flow. Part of the ore from these passive zones can be recovered together with ore extraction on the lower sublevel, but some un¬diluted and often not fragmented ore located in passive zones above the plane of the footwall is lost. In gen¬eral, these losses are larger as the inclination of the ore body and the footwall is reduced. A relatively large amount of development is re¬quired. This includes transport drifts, usually located in the footwall waste rock on each sublevel, and sub¬level drifts, which connect the active mining areas to the transport drifts and as a result are partially in ore and partially in the waste rock of the footwall. The waste rock length increases as the inclination of the ore body and footwall decreases. It also includes orepasses, used for transport of the ore or waste from the separate sublevels downward to the main haulage level, and normally driven in waste; and inclined drifts or tunnels, which provide a connection for the trackless equipment between the main haulage level and the separate sublevels and are driven in waste. Finally there is the de¬struction of the surface through subsidence. To maximize the ore recovery, minimize the dilu¬tion, and achieve a high efficiency of mining by sub¬level caving, good data regarding the gravity flow pa¬rameters for the blasted ore and the caved waste are of utmost importance. The exact type and amount of data required depend upon the purpose and needs of the study. For the first feasibility study, it may be sufficient to utilize the data from other sublevel caving operations with similar conditions and circumstances. For any higher level of mine planning it is clear that more exact data, including analytical and experimental analyses up to full-scale in-situ testing, are necessary. Basic gravity flow principles and design guidelines for the application of the sublevel caving mining method are presented in the following sections. Although some¬what simplified, they should provide a basis for mine planning and operation. The gravity flow principles described can be effectively applied to other mining situations, with some modification. Also, steep dipping coal seams can be effectively mined by modified sub¬level caving.

Now it is time co once again improve the quality and types of coal products coming from future coal preparation plants to meet the changing needs of our society. Clean Coal Technology, along with federal support provided, is forcing our industry to provide cleaner coal products for industrial applications. Liquid fuels from coal is just one of many new products from a coal preparation plant that has a ready market in the transportation sector. UCC Research Corporation is developing these new liquid coal products and this paper will describe the progress and the new slate of coal products to be provided from future preparation plants.

The behavior of four different redox sensing electrodes (gold spiral, black platinum, chalcopyrite, and galena) during roughing and cleaning flotation is examined and related to the flotation response. Although it is difficult to provide unequivocal interpretations of the different potentials measured, the results indicate that the solution potential (as sensed by the black platinum electrode) is different from that of the pulp potential (gold spiral) and is only weakly related to the flotation response. On the other hand, the potentials exhibited by the gold spiral and the two mineral electrodes are related to the floatation response. The gold and mineral electrodes exhibit different transcient responses during the addition of flotation modifiers (e.g. NaCN, SO2). These responses appear to be related to the reactivity of the minerals and could indicate the conditioning time required to achieve flotation or depression of selected minerals.

The exact reasons that explain the low recoveries of coarse particles in conventional flotation machines are not clear. Being a concern for only a couple of mineral industries comparatively very few studies have been devoted to the problem of coarse particle flotation. Coarse particles flotation is particularly important in potash and phosphate beneficiation. Potash concentrates with particles larger than 1-2 mm do not require additional compaction or recrystallization and receive a premium price. However, recovery of this size particle in conventional flotation cells is very low, and therefore, the coarse floation tailings have to be reground and refloated to produce, at a higher cost, a less desirable concentrate. In phosphate beneficiation deslimed coarse ore (nominally l4x35 or l6x35 mesh) is normally treated separatedly from the finer (35x150 mesh) ore. Concentration by conventional froth flotation alone yields very low recoveries, and therefore, additional processes such as agglomerate flotation in tables spirals and belt conveyors have to be used ( Moudgil and Barnett 1979). Fatty acids and fuel oil used in phosphate flotation have a moderate level of selectivity but considerable amounts of sand report to the froth product, thus concentrates have to be further upgraded by a double flotation process. Concentrates from the anionic circuit are scrubbed in an acidic media to desorb the collectors and then refloated in a cationic circuit to eliminate the fine silica (Lawver et.al. 1978). In this paper the reasons that explain the low recovery of coarse particles in conventional flotation are discussed. A flotation column modified according to the main conclusions of this discussion is tested with two coarse phosphate samples.

Potash is a generic term that includes potassium chloride, potassium magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, potassium nitrate, and sodium-potassium nitrate mixtures. In the ceramics industry, potash is also used to refer to potassium oxide. Potash, primarily in the form of potassium carbonate, was the first industrial mineral produced in the United States, and the first US patent issued was for an apparatus and process developed in 1790 for its production (Paynter, 1990). Prior to the 1860s, potash was primarily sold as an impure form of potassium carbonate produced by burning hard- wood trees and leaching the potassium salts from the ashes. The major early uses of potash include soap and glass making, dyeing fabrics, baking, and saltpeter for gunpowder. In 1859, the development of a purification process to remove the sodium and magnesium chlorides was developed for the carnallite found at Stassfurt, Germany, and mined potash became available. With the appearance of mined potash and the earlier (1840) discovery in Germany by Justus von Liebig that potash was a nutrient for crops, potash started to be used for high valued crops such as cotton and vegetables. The German potash companies quickly developed a manufacturing process for producing potassium sulfate for tobacco fertilization. German potash supplied nearly all American needs until the embargo of the First World War when imports from Germany were interrupted (Bateman, 1918). With the discovery of potash deposits in New Mexico in 1931, the United States became self-sufficient in potash. In 1962, the United States began importing potash from Canada, and two years later domestic apparent consumption began to exceed domestic production. Along with nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium is one of the three essential plant nutrients, the "K" of NPK terminology. As a result, 95% of potash production is used as plant fertilizer. In all plants, inadequate potassium diminishes growth, causes increased disease, stalk and stem breakage, and susceptibility to other stress conditions. Plants take up large quantities of potassium from the soil, and potash fertilization replaces this loss so that each new crop can be grown with the same vigor and productivity as the previous year's crop. The potassium depletion of the soil from growing repeated cotton and tobacco crops is well known in the history of southern agriculture in America. George Washington was known to have studied alternative crops that could be grown on soil that had been depleted by repeated tobacco crops. Most of the remaining 5% of potash consumption is by the chemical industry, as potassium hydroxide to produce soaps and detergents, glass and ceramic products, dyes, explosives, alkaline batteries, and medicines. Potash as chemical is used in oil field drilling mud, the aluminum recycling industry, and the electroplating industry. Additional minor uses for potassium chloride include water softener regeneration, sidewalk deicing, and salt substitution for human consumption. Potash is used in the food industry as potassium phosphate, and in production of glass products as potassium carbonate or nitrate. GEOLOGY Potassium is the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust and the sixth most abundant element in seawater. It is found in silicate minerals of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks and is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines. The majority of world potash resources are found in subsurface bedded salt deposits which yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies and are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. Because of the relatively high solubility of potassium minerals, potash from salt deposits is ideal for use as fertilizers. Some potash production is from evaporation of naturally occurring brines, but the vast majority of current domestic and international production is from bedded salt deposits. Sylvite, carnallite, kainite, and langbeinite are some of the more important potassium minerals (Table 1). Sylvinite, a mixture of KC1 and NaCl is the highest grade potash ore. Carnallite can be considered a potash ore when removal of magnesium chloride is included in the beneficiation, but it can also be considered a contaminant when mining for sylvite. Potassium sulfate and potassium nitrate are typically manufactured products. Potassium sulfate is produced from mined minerals through conversion processes in Italy, Germany, and Carlsbad, NM, and from brines in southern California and at the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Natural deposits of potassium nitrate occur only in small amounts in Chile. The majority of potash-bearing bedded salt deposits are believed to have originated from the evaporation of seawater or mixtures of seawater and other brines in restricted marine basins (Schmalz, 1969). The reflux depositional model for evaporite deposition was first described in the literature in 1888 by Ochsenius. A shallow bar, or sill, across the mouth of a basin lets in a restricted flow of seawater which evaporates into a salt-precipitating brine (Fig. 1). The density of the brine at the distal end increases with increased salinity, sinks to the bottom, and sets up a reflux current of higher density brine back toward the ocean. The sill, which restricts the inflow of seawater, allows inhibited flow of evaporation-concentrated brines back to the ocean. The least soluble salts are precipitated nearer the sill, and the most soluble components come out of solution in the deeper parts of the basin. The result is a lateral facies change in a tabular-shaped deposit that is due to the salinity gradients in the brine (Fig. 2A). The asymmetrical facies distribution of the Paradox Formation (Middle Pennsylvanian) Utah (Hite, 1970), the Prairie Formation (Middle Devonian) in Saskatchewan (Holter, 1972), and the Salado Formation (Upper Permian) in New Mexico (Lowenstein, 1988), might prompt explanation by such a model. Other deposits, such as the Salina Formation (Upper Silurian) in Michigan (Matthews and Egleson, 1974), show a facies distribution that could be described as a bull's eye pattern. Although some small subbasins of high grade sylvite are found near the margins, the potash is generally located in a central part of the basin surrounded by successively less soluble facies (Fig. 2B). Since the earliest days of mining, the job of digging coal out of the earth has been considered one of the world?s most dangerous occupations. From 1880 to 1910, mine explosions and other accidents claimed thousands of victims. In 1907 alone, over three thousand deaths occurred in U.S. coal mines. Public concern has prompted the passage of much needed safety legislation; from the creation of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910, to the comprehensive laws of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. This type of legislation, along with the cooperation of industry, labor, and MSHA has contributed greatly in making mining safer and more healthful. Mining deaths and injuries have declined Significantly since those early days. However, even though this trend is positive, none of US can afford to look at the injury numbers and frequency rates and label them as acceptable.

The Morenci Open Pit Mine, located in south-eastern Arizona, is owned and operated by Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. The Mine has been predominantly a rail mine since its origin in 1937. However, beginning in early 1986, a program was initiated to phase out the rail mining operation and replace it with a more flexible and productive truck haulage scheme. This transformation from rail to truck haulage will be accomplished when the current in-pit crushing and conveying project is completed in late 1988.

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a cooperative arrangement between a component or raw materials supplier and a manufacturing customer. The supplier must analyze his own manufacturing process and determine, predict, and control those variable elements in the circuit which affect finished product characteristics according to the customer's specifications. The results include: control of fluctuations in product characteristics to a narrow range, close communication between supplier and customer, and an increased responsibility for quality control placed on the supplier. In the mining and. processing of airfloated kaolin some unique problems arise with the SPC concept: 1) The SPC system was designed for manufacturing facilities that did not have to deal with natural variations in their raw material; 2) The airfloat process is relatively simple and offers limited opportunity to change processing steps or "fine tune" a circuit for special product needs; 3) Determining adequate sampling frequency for a plant which processes hundreds to thousands of tons per day is statistically difficult; and, 4) Due to the variety of customer industries served, different SPC programs must be set up to deal with widely varying specifications. For airfloated kaolin, SPC is "in line" process control, not after the fact "quality" control. The emphasis must be on statistically valid sampling of the kaolin ore and complete monitoring of its path through the beneficiation circuit.

A computer program has been developed to simulate evacuation of a mine in various configurations. The simulation input variables include characteristics of the mine, expressed, in the form of a network of passages, properties of hoists and hoisting strategies, initial miner positions, ventilation and compressed air velocities, stench warning system and self rescuer capabilities. The simulation can be carried out for cases in which there is no fire, i. e. , fire drill simulation, or for cases in which there is a fire at any arbitrary location. The fire is assumed to generate gases which impede movement of miners in the gaseous region. However, the thermal effects of the fire are not considered. The simulation output include the evacuation time for each miner, movement of the hoists, propagation of smoke through the mine passages and smoke exposure of the miners. Several illustrative simulations have been carried out to verify validity of the program and to demonstrate its capabilities. The computer program has been able to predict evacuation time, within 5 percent, for an actual fire drill. It is believed that this program can be used to evaluate evacuation performance of a mine, identify problem areas and demonstrate improvements due to the recommended corrective actions.

A physical elastic seismic model, based on the Peoria oil field was constructed and used to produce multi mode cross-borehole seismic data. Because this was a physical model, it was necessary to deal with a complex wave field consisting of compressional waves, shear waves, and converted waves. The recorded raw data were complex, have no resemblance to the inter-well geology, and were difficult or impossible to interpret. These unintelligible data sets were extensively computer processed. Detailed, accurate, images of the inter-well structure, and reflecting horizons were obtained as a result of this processing. This investigation demonstrates that excellent, accurate images of the inter-well geology can be obtained by skilled seismic cross-well data acquisition and extensive careful computer processing.

Problems in new strip mine development is a subject that could require several days to cover adequately. Coupled with the fertile imagination of television writers, we could probably expand it into a series rivaling Gunsmoke in longevity with just as many shootouts at sundown. It would-of course-be subject to a high Neilson Rating. To bring the subject into perspective, we will limit the comments to a general discussion covering western strip coal developments. Stimulated by increased demand for low sulfur coal, surface mineable western coal operations began a shift into high gear approximately four years ago. Then came last year's "energy crisis" that increased the pressure on coal development not only in the west, but nationwide. Several eastern power plants having dual oil and coal burning facilities were directed to discontinue using oil. Also, a number of new south and southwestern power plants scheduled to burn natural gas or of I commenced an ordered conversion to other fuels, namely, coal. The involved utilities with reserve positions accelerated their planning while others began the search for long-term commitments from coal producing companies. In addition, announcements were made for proposed mine mouth coal gasification projects in New Mexico, Wyoming, and North Dakota.

Exxon is reclaiming an 80 hectare (200 acre) Wyoming uranium tailings basin (10 Mt) in accordance with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements. The reclamation plan is designed to control the tailings and their radioactive emissions for at least 1000 years. Rigorous modeling and analyses of potential erosion by wind and water were used in planning. The use of riprap was minimized and the need for long term reclamation maintenance was eliminated. The resulting design is similar to erosionally stable regions created by nature. The concepts used in the design and implantation have wider reclamation application.

The first commercial installation of the Dashaveyor has recently been completed at the White Pine Mine in Northern Michigan. After four years of development work, including prototype testing, and pilot plant operation, this new and unique system is being tested under operational conditions. Many of you may be familiar with the concept through numerous articles which have appeared in the technical press. But this discussion of the system will be simplified and less time consuming with the presentation of a portion of a film showing the Dashaveyor in actual operation. After the movie, I will show some slides which will supplement and clarify it and hopefully lay the basis for questions you will undoubtedly wish to ask.

The western coast of South Africa hosts a significant diamond resource within gravels associated with paleo-shorelines, channels and transgressive lag deposits. Diamonds were transported from the Kaapvaal Craton to the coast largely during the late Cretaceous via the paleo-Orange river systems. On shore and near shore environments are underlain by Proterozoic metamorphic and granitic rocks which provide gully and pot hole-type traps associated with paleo-channels, basins, bays and beaches. Inner and mid-shelf environments are covered by diamondiferous, poorly lithified upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. The upper Cretaceous gravels were reworked along the sediment-starved coast during much of the Tertiary. Reworking was mainly achieved during marine flooding events which produced lag gravels along the paleo-shorelines. This process reworked the diamonds from low-grade Cretaceous gravels and concentrated them in higher-grade Tertiary gravels.

The turning bands method for the simulation of spatially correlated data in two or three dimensions requires that the relation- ship between the covariance obeyed by the realizations first generated on lines, and the covariance of the two or three dimensional process must be solved. In three dimensions the solution is immediate, but in two dimensions the integral equation relating the covariances of the one and two dimensional processes is more complex. This is solved in this paper and is applied to the most common model used in ore deposit description, the spherical covariance.

Rotary Percussion drilling has shown great improvement over rotary drilling, when hard roof is encountered. In addition, Rotary Percussion drills have eliminated the need for air drills in many applications. Improved drilling rates have been achieved but roof bolting is still a bottleneck in many operations and the demand for further improvement will continue. Drilling rates beyond current performance is limited by the capabilities of existing drill steels and bits to resist increased horsepower input. The most apparent immediate solution to improved drilling is to increase the strength and rigidity of the drill steels. Drilling experience indicates that a l-1/2" diameter or 1-5/8" diameter hole can be drilled as rapidly or 'more rapidly than the standard 1-3/8" diameter hole. Greater torque and thrust capacities can be achieved through the use of larger O. D. and I. D, steels, however, this is only possible if the larger hole sizes can be made allowable. Large diameter anchorage shells can be made available at a slight extra cost.

Although explosives constitute only a small portion of a mine's total cost, the relative success of each blast has a tremendous effect on subsequent activities such as excavation, crushing, and equipment maintenance. Beginning in January of 1993, tests were carried out to determine whether productivity could be improved by replacing standard ammonium nitrate fuel oil mixtures (ANFO) with a high density, high performance blasting agent. The study was carried out at gold mines, coal mines, and cement quarries in Nevada, California, Colorado, and New Mexico. A wide variety of rock types and blasting conditions were encountered. Results showed that at most operations productivity was sufficiently improved to more than offset the increase in explosives cost. This resulted in a net reduction in mining cost. This paper presents a summary of these results.

Subsidence resulting from mining operations, has been the object of sporadic study for many years. Reports have shown that subsidence has ranged from minor settlement detected only by precise measurements to great slips where buildings are destroyed, roads disrupted, and large fissures opened at the surface. For years, a controversy has raged over the question of whether there is a positive or negative angle-of-draw. None of these questions can be given a flat answer for the variables controlling, subsidence are infinite. Generalizations can be made for various situations and areas but some means of control must be executed.
