The appearance of very large shielded softground TBM's, of 14 m (46 ft) O.D. and more, as needed for two-lane highway tunnels, calls for a thorough search of overall stability and new solutions for front support during maintenance operations in the cutting chamber. The paper deals with the development of a shield for the planned 4 th tunnel crossing under the river Elbe in Hamburg. Specific problems arise from the high water head, the shallow overburden of loose soil and the stone-bearing mixed ground. The choice of the tunneling method and the different features provided to overcome the problems are discussed.

Few people would question that coal is king in the Campbell County, WY area. Other industries, such as oil production and ranching, also contribute significantly to the economic base, but coal mining and related industry development dominate. In recent years, Gillette has become the commercial hub of northeastern Wyoming. This development has been largely a response to the growth of the coal industry in Campbell County. Historically, Campbell County developed as a ranching area, a process that was aided by the passage of rail lines through the area, allowing early ranching interests to get their livestock to market. For decades, the Gillette-Campbell County area was predominantly a ranching area that experienced only incremental population growth.

A critical aspect of the planning, investigation, design, and construction of an underground excavation project is the portal. The portal is the primary access through which most if not all tunnel construction is carried out and it is the lifeline of the tunnel. Planning considerations include depth of cover, slope stability, economics of open cut versus shaft access, environmental impact, and contractor staging area. Critical aspects of planning, investigation, design, and construction of portals are considered by discussing portal design and portal failure case histories.

Owned and managed by industry, it coordinates research that answers questions defined by the sponsoring companies of the projects. Now over 35 years old, the Association is an excellent example of what can be achieved through collaborative research and an industry - backed research organisation.

A brief study of the history of gas caverns in salt formations enables us to consider creep mechanism in a cavity as a phenomenon of dissymmetrical deformation. Among different parameters affecting such a phenomenon, gravity forces, especially in large caverns, seem to be responsible for important bottom heaves as compared to roof releases. This fact is demonstrated here by means of certain theoretical considerations concerning elasto-viscoplastic constitutive laws relevant to rocksalt rheological behavior.

Although the use of precast concrete segments for tunnel linings has been common for many years in Europe, acceptance of this type of lining has been slow in the United States. This paper explores the cost, design, and construction considerations of concrete segmental lining with a view to promoting its use in this country when favorable conditions exist. The different perspectives held by owners, designers, and contractors are discussed. In addition to cost, other considerations include previous design and construction experience, size, length and function of tunnel, watertightness, and liability. Cost comparisons are made to traditional ground support and lining. Under favorable conditions, the use of precast concrete segmental linings can be technically feasible and cost effective.

An ongoing research program at the Colorado School of Mines is investigating the application of low to moderate pressure water jets to assist the cutting performance of drag type cutter bits commonly used on coal mine cutting machinery. The results to date indicate that a water jet directed to impinge the rock in the immediate vicinity of cutter tip can provide significant benefits in terms of reduced cutting forces, prolonged bit life and less airborne dust, as well as reduced tendency of sparking during cutting. This paper describes the findings of this research effort designed to fully evaluate and optimize the parameters affecting the performance of a combined water jet assisted drag bit cutting system for coal mine applications.

A highly respected coal mining company in West Virginia updated their stacker belt by switching to a new magnetic coupling. The savings they achieved are the subject of this paper. A steep incline and heavy belt loads are powered by a dual drive arrangement. The magnetic couplings were custom designed for complete fluid coupling retrofit and easy installation in the field. Maintenance personnel updated the drives in just a few hours. Over the following several weeks, adjustments were made to the couplings for optimum performance. Cost savings are found in reduced down time, no coupling maintenance, and equipment protection.

The principal geological and mineralogical characteristics of Chilean porphyry copper deposits are described. Elevated contents of fine grained ore and gangue material may cause copper losses and pose problems or render useless the flotation process. Examples of chalcopyrite and bornite size distributions are given. The state of the art of mineralogical and mineral chemical characterization in Chile is evaluated permitting analyses to lm and nm level by lacking the regular use of direct surface analysis.

Fly ash samples were collected from two large lignite-fired power plants of Ptolemais region, northern Greece. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) was applied for the characterisation of the samples. ESEM coupled with Energy Dispersive System (EDS) provided fast and accurate results on the morphology, mineralogy and chemical composition of the fly ash particles. Fly ash consists mainly of aluminosilicate glass, silicates, oxides-hydroxides, sulphates, carbonates and char. Various types of chars, spheres (e.g. ferrospheres, cenosphers, plerospheres etc.), spheroids, agglomerates and mineral crystalls were observed. The size distribution of the fly ash particles was correlated with their mineralogical and chemical composition. Possible environmental impacts and potential utilization is also discussed in this study.

This topic addresses historic and current techniques of excavating, supporting and lining tunnels of 4 m (13.1 ft) and smaller. Special considerations relate to the economics of working in close quarters and the sizes of tunnel which achieve the required facility in the optimum economic manner are discussed. The excavation discussion includes TBM, conventional and special techniques for hard rock, soft ground, subaqueous, free and compressed air tunnels. Internal and external support methods discusses timbering, steel ribs, bolting, strapping, shotcreting, grouting, and freezing. Lining methods include cast-in-place concrete, concrete pipe, segmented linings, shotcrete, and others.

A quantitative estimation of the size distribution of rock fragments is extremely important in mining, metallurgy and other geotechnical fields. This paper presents a new approach to the analysis of fragmentation. The method combines the practicality of digital image processing of the rock surface with the theoretical volume calculations based on the principles and laws of fractal geometry. The final volumetric distribution curve is compared with the results from traditional sieving indicating close agreement.

Talc is used as an essential ingredient in a variety of plastics applications ranging from polyester body patch compounds through polypropylene automotive, appliance and household furniture components to high performance parts made from liquid crystal engineering resins. This paper focuses on polyolefin applications, the three-tier market for talc in polypropylene, the effects of various tales in typical compounds and trends in each market segment. Emphasis is given to emerging markets, examples of which are polypropylene compounds that mimic higher cost resins, and polyethylene films. Customer requirements for tales for these purposes are discussed.

It is the purpose of this paper to review the development of this system, describe the setting in which it functions and to mention some of the future developments and enhancements. This paper describes improvements in SAG and AG mill liner designs and their cumulative effect on wear life and mill availability. Routine procedures used by many SAG and AG mill operators to improve liner life are reviewed. Guidelines are provided for estimating the time required to replace worn liners along with practical methods to reduce downtime for liner replacement. Finally, the effects of mill operating conditions on liner wear life and breakage are considered.

Magnetic separation using rare earth rolls (RER) and rare earth drums (RED) have seem tremendous development and use in recent years. While the process of magnetic separation is understood, the principles affecting the separation, the specific application and the optimization of RERs and REDs are less well known. This paper offers practical insight into the basic operation, selection and optimization of RERs and REDs. It is a guide for the engineer who must design a test series and select the proper equipment for that application. It provides the engineers and line operators who control the daily operation of the equipment a basic understanding of the dynamics of operation and the principles that govern the optimization of RERs and REDs.

Precast concrete segmental tunnel linings have been used since at least 1903. More serious attention was devoted to them in England during the World War II steel shortage and they have become increasingly common since that time. They are now coming into common use in the United States, especially as primary linings for soft ground tunnels and for rock tunnels in poor ground, although they have also been used as final lining, especially in rock tunnels. The developmental logic, design considerations, and current practices are examined. Particular attention is given to unbolted linings, with and without secondary linings. Probable future developments are considered.

Considerable interest has been shown recently in organically modified silicates (ormosils) because of the wide range of possible applications for these interesting organic-inorganic hybrids. These applications include the use of the hybrids as modifiers of a range of host polymer proper- ties. The ormosils can be synthesised by the conventional hydrolytic sol-gel process, as well as by the non-hydrolytic sol-gel route. To date, however, there are relatively few reports of the synthesis of sub-micron size ormosil particles of well-defined spherical morphology. Here, we report work to date on synthesis of such nanoparticles and also introduce our own work in the area.

In many mining applications it is not practical to use gravity takeups. In these situations hydraulic takeups are often utilized. Performance specifications are often compromised by designs which have inherently high internal friction and inefficient hydraulic designs. This results in performance which does not match the requirements of the conveyor system. A computer model has been built to check unit efficiencies and field measurements have been taken which verify the results.
