A practical and economical flowsheet has been developed and demonstrated by integrating the packed column flotation with the GranuFlow process for fine coal recovery. Orimulsion, which was used as an additive, served a dual purpose: first in the flotation and second in the dewatering and granulation steps. The test results on the coal preparation effluent sample show that Orimulsion is flexible and compatible with fuel oil and various frothers used in the packed column. Clean coal with ash contents of 3.0, 3.7, 4.3 and 5.1% were produced from a head sample of 33% ash at combustible matter recoveries of 72.4, 81.1, 87.5, and 89.2%, respectively. Other advantages include high throughput, low moisture, improved handleability, and reduced dustiness of the dewatered coal, thus providing a very significant economic Incentive for the integrated process.

The interaction of soluble salt particles in their saturated brines is of interest from both a fundamental and practical perspective. The state of dispersion/aggregation of alkali halide particles as determined by optical microscopy can now be described based on non-equilibrium electrokinetic measurements for alkali halides. These results indicate that the sign of the surface charge has a significant effect on the extent of particle dispersion/aggregation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is now being used to directly measure the interaction forces responsible for the stability of these alkali halide aggregates observed in optical microscopy studies. These experimental results can be explained based on the interfacial polar interaction theory. In this regard the nature of such particle interaction forces at high ionic strengths are examined to improve our understanding of these systems.

The liquid phase mixing in Western Research Centre (WRC) pilot plant flotation column with diameter of 0.76 m has been characterized using a salt tracer. The process variables studied were gas and liquid flow rates. The response of the column to a tracer pulse input was monitored at three axial and two radial locations. For all the experimental conditions investigated in the present study, radial and axial concentration gradients were not observed. It is thus concluded that the 2 tph flotation column is behaving as a well mixed tank. This finding is consistent with the observed poor recoveries of coarse fractions in the column flotation circuit. Based on the findings of this report, it is recommended that several schemes of reducing the backmixing be implemented and evaluated for their effectiveness in improving the column recoveries.

The modelling of phenomena by nonlinear dynamic Systems Theory representations require the specification and identification of suitable models of the phenomenon and the availability of good optimization algorithms to determine the optimal controls. Stochastic disturbances and difficulties of monitoring the process lead invariably, otherwise, to suboptimal performance. It will be shown that an algorithm can be formulated which will simultaneously identify and optimize such a system. The properties of the algorithm will be derived and its convergence to an optimal control proved. Some results of actual applications will be presented and it will be shown how this approach generalizes easily to optimal control of the actual processing system. These results generalize those of optimal learning and input conditioning.

During the 14 years since the last update to National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101), there have been many discussions between Canadian regulators and mining companies about mining disclosure deficiencies that arise from regulatory reviews. These discussions are not made public, and as a result, there has been some drift in how NI 43-101 is interpreted by the regulators, which in turn creates uncertainty for the mining companies trying to comply with the instrument. To reduce uncertainty in mining disclosure requirements, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) has issued a notice to update the current NI 43-101 with a streamlined instrument and form. Changes and benefits are listed in the “CSA Notice and Request for Comment — Proposed Repeal and Replacement of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects,” which is available on the Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia Securities Commission websites. The public has been invited to comment, with the comment period ending on Oct. 10, 2025. The 43-101 Companion Policy (43-101 CP) provides an update to the views of the regulators on how the CSA staff interpret and apply certain provisions of the instrument. Collectively, some of the changes to NI 43-101, the form and 43-101 CP are likely to increase the financial and other burdens on the mining companies responsible for the disclosure, and the qualified persons (QPs) who create the disclosure. In other instances, there are missed opportunities to reduce the burden on mining companies and QPs without impacting the markets.

The continuous flow, horizontal drum blender has dynamic properties which may be described by the same type of equations which often arise in electrical filter analysis. Furthermore, the equations may be readily solved by the same techniques used in electrical control analysis. For this reason the blender model developed is termed an "Electric Analog", although strictly speaking it is a mathematical model. Presentation of the dynamic performance of the blender as an electrical (or mathematical) model is desirable for several reasons. The model can be of assistance in correlating performance data with equipment design parameters. The model 'can be used with other process equipment models for simulation of an entire plant operation or in stability studies. In addition, the model may be useful in providing insight into the actual blending mechanism, or it may suggest a similar method of analysis for other closely allied equipment.

The direct investment role of Middle Eastern oil producing countries in future world-wide mineral development probably will be a limited one for the next five years. Their needs and their longer range economic objectives substantially preclude any such risk taking ventures. There is, of course, the possibility of political in- vestment. One hears many rumors and doomsday calculations of what the Arabs might do with the rising accumulation of surplus funds. Up to now, this kind of investment has been more in rhetoric than in money. For the most part, oil producing countries of the Middle East have been, and will be, investing surplus funds with strong emphasis on the preservation of capital. They will seek security first and yield second just like any other prudent investor. In several respects, this is regrettable. A direct infusion of risk capital into mineral development, especially in the Third World countries, is a constructive way of enhancing their earning power which many desperately need just to stave off starvation. It would also be a good way of eliminating material shortages in the industrialized world. Most important of all, it would help to ultimately reduce inflation without imposing the hardship of recession. So why isn't it done?

It is shown that seriously preoxidized arsenopyrite can adsorb a large amount of copper ions as unoxidized one, but without, release of corresponding amount of Fe ions; seriously preoxidized pyrite cannot adsorb copper ions, but with release of a large amount of Fe ions. However, if the minerals are rapidly oxidized with potassium permanganate solution, both arsenopyrite and especially pyrite can adsorb a large amount of copper ions, but still without release of corresponding amount, of Fe ions. Cu adsorption (if there is any) on both oxidized arsenopyrite and pyrite is not based on the Cu-Fe exchange mechanism.

After 30 years of success, Newmont Gold Company has temporarily ceased production from the original Carlin Pit. In late 1993, the Carlin East Decline was driven and an extensive underground exploration program was started. Today, Newmont Gold produces refractory ore from the Carlin East underground at the rate of 700 t/d (770 stpd) for an annual production of over 100,000 ounces. Over 70 underground miners enjoy the estimated 6-year mine life at Carlin East. About 70% of the ore at Carlin East is mined by mechanized longhole stoping with delayed cemented backfill. The remaining ore is mined by underhand drift and cemented fill methods.

At the risk of belaboring certain facts which have so often been stated in the past, please bear with me while I set the stage. What are the projected electrical power needs of the nation and of the Northwest during the next 15 to 20 years? No one who has researched the subject over its historical past has reached a substantially different result than the following simple conclusion: electrical power requirements are doubling every decade. There are some who question the necessity of a power company's need to install capacity every ten years equal to what it has done during its entire previous history; there are even those who would argue that such growth should be arbitrarily curtailed. We are not here today to decide who should have light, heat, jobs and comfort, for we know that a power company must, by law, meet its responsibilities of providing the energy the public expects when the switch is thrown. The Northwest area (the States of Oregon and Washington), for which I speak, has the same case history of electrical power need as does the nation as a whole, and the requirement boils down to roughly an average of a million kilowatts of new capacity each year over the next ten years and we can estimate an average two million kilowatts per year in the 1980's. This is simple arithmetic, but the problems of meeting this exhausting schedule are a real challenge. The subject to which I address this paper is the role that Western Coal will play in the 6 billion dollar investment in these power generation stations. That 6 billion dollar figure represents today's dollar value and you may wish to apply your own escalation - frankly, I haven't the courage.

Thank you Mr. Stevens. It's a pleasure for me to be speaking to this meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME this afternoon, and the Gypsum, Association is grateful for the invitation. A brief word about who we are: the Gypsum Association is the trade association for the gypsum industry - the manufacturers of gypsum board and lath a-d plaster. We have a membership of eight companies. These eight companies produce about 90% of the gypsum products manufactured in the United States ... closer to 94% actually. Our headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois. We have an east coast office in Washington, D.C. where the eastern manager handles technical and building code matters and maintains liaison between all of the government agencies and departments and our industry. We also have a west coast office in Los Angeles where our west coast representatives is heavily involved with the Uniform Building Code and ICBO. And then in the Evanston office our manager of technical and building code services, Herb Carlsen, bites his nails and loses his hair over these problems and various other projects that come in, such as conversion to metric and various other things. We also have a research associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington who is currently concentrating his efforts on the combustibility of building materials. His studies involve current testing methods, definitions, data analysis, and proposed new testing methods,.' It is anticipated that this program will lead to a better understanding of non-combustibility of building materials and systems. I mentioned that our members represent over 90% of gypsum products,' manufactured in the United States; it might be well to point out a couple of statistics about what that really means. Gemcom PCBCTM is a software package which has been developed over the last 22 years for the planning and scheduling of block cave mines. This paper presents an update of the various research and development activities done to PCBC recently. It also provides an overview of the current capabilities of the software including tools for both feasibility type studies as well as tools for operating mines. PCBC is used extensively by prospective and operating block cave mines and some of the recent applications are described.

Despite numerous empirical, numerical, and hybrid studies conducted on the subject of coal rib failure, mine fatalities related to rib failures continue to occur. To date, a standard methodology for the design of coal rib supports which can accommodate the wide range of unique conditions found in coal mines in the United States has not been developed, forcing mine operators to rely on the trial-and-error process or industrial legacy practices for the design of coal rib support patterns. In this study, to better understand the support systems' effectiveness, various rib bolting scenarios were investigated. A coal mass constitutive model is implemented to a Distinct Element Method (DEM) code, and rib factor-of-safety (RibFOS) analyses were performed by applying strength-reduction for the coal matrix and explicitly modeled face cleats. Ribs with various overburden depths and mining heights composed of solid Banded-Bright coal (BBC) were considered in this study. Different scenarios such as rib bolt length and the number of bolts were studied to quantify the effect of primary rib support density on rib stability. As a result of the unsupported coal rib analyses, a decaying exponential relationship is proposed between the mining height-overburden depth and the RibFOS. The developed coal rib models clearly show the coal-rib bolt interaction and illustrate how the addition of rib bolts restricts the movement of the coal rib. The results reveal that the strength reduction method in DEM code with the coal-mass model can aid in the development of practical primary support charts, which can help in the rib support design process. The solution of the dynamic population balance model (PBM) of a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone is problematic. The fact that the dynamic PBM model equation solution to the Inverse Problem for grinding systems is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Two numerical solution approaches to the Inverse Problem are used. These are: 1) providing additional constraints on breakage selection functions or 2) performing the Arbiter-Bhrany (or other) normalization of the selection functions. Actual experimental anthracite batch grinding data is used to demonstrate the non-unique functionality of the batch dynamic mill selection and breakage functions for a real physical system. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations is used to solve the batch dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. Different solutions to the same PBM transport equations are provided. The mill, sump and hydrocyclone were modeled as a CSTR operating at various retention times. Batch dynamic PBM data was used to provide the mill kinetic and breakage selection function data. Two different solutions were obtained depending on the numerical solution approach. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution approach to a dynamic PBM with transport, while giving the same prediction for a single batch grinding time, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. This fact makes dynamic nodal analysis and control problematic. The fact that the constraint solution approach gives a solution may suggest that normalization for closed networks is not necessary. Differences in solutions to the PBM cannot be excused away by inaccuracies in the data used to model the grinding phenomenon.

Following an in-depth scenario and strategic-planning exercise in 1997, Noranda's mine production goal was set at 500 kt/a (550,000 stpy) of both copper and zinc metal in five years. There had been no recent discoveries, reserves were shrinking and things had to be done differently and quickly. Change is now continual in Noranda's program. The following steps were taken: the exploration and business development groups were combined, teams were formed to search for and respond to opportunity; geologists were coached to become more business minded and engineers were coached to become more optimistic; the company went global; clear thresholds were set, marginal properties were farmed out and other properties were fast tracked; reconnaissance exploration was focussed where there was a clear competitive advantage; and Noranda became a "flexible" partner to juniors and seniors. Is it working? A number of successes, near successes and outright failures are discussed. The main result is a much higher rate of opportunity flux, which is essential for success in the mining industry.

Good afternoon, fellow members of the international mining community. I appreciate the opportunity to participate in this special three-day, international gathering, and to join with you in honoring one of my very good friends, Doug Fuerstenau. It couldn't be more fitting to have this kind of event to mark Doug's 60th birthday. You know, in addition to his faculty position at the University of California in Berkeley, Doug is a member of the Board of Directors of our Homestake Mining Company. So it is a double pleasure for me to help pay tribute to one of the outstanding academicians of the mining industry as well as a man with whom I work closely in running Homestake. I have been asked to talk about "The Future of Precious Metals," but I will concentrate my remarks on gold. Since the theme of this Symposium is "Challenges in Mineral Processing," what I'm going to talk about is a challenge that relates especially to a major problem faced by those of us who process ores to recover gold. I noted that in the Scope of this Symposium, it stated: "the mineral industry is currently facing many challenges to improve the economics, operating efficiencies and environmental concerns of the mineral processing system." I couldn't agree more with that statement. I think that a need exists for us to address this situation as it involves gold. And who better to consider this than the worldwide leaders of mineral processing research here assembled. I start with the premise that we need a new method for cyanide use or a chemical to replace sodium cyanide entirely. SYSTEM ENGINEERING Years ago, while attending Harvard's Advanced Management Program, Professor Robert Hayes introduced our class to the, then not-so-familiar, concept of systems engineering. First assignment-dinner at The Benihana of Tokyo Restaurant! Delighted, but a bit mystified with the assignment; we had dinner at Benihana. Back in class, Professor Hayes inquired about the assignment and persuaded us; that Rocky Aoki's business formula for Benihana was not necessarily Japanese cuisine, but rather the systematic way in which he moves more people-if you will, processes more people through his restaurants than his competition, by systematically linking all restaurant functions. For instance, the bar is a holding area in which patrons ideally wait no more, or no less, than 20 minutes. When seated, your table, which accommodates eight, is filled with eight even if you are a party of two. The Japanese chef is also the entertainment, and when, at the end, he cleans the grill, you are being subtly prompted that dinner is over. The bill accompanies ice cream, systematically delivered shortly thereafter. You are expected to pay promptly and depart, as there are eight more, mostly unacquainted, people who have waited 20 minutes in the bar, and who are assembled ready to be seated at your table. For me-this was electrifying. I understood the concept, concluded it was very powerful and felt prepared to conquer whatever, by means of its application. That was years ago and I can safely say I have yet to fully realize on the euphoria of that moment. Why? Well, I simply conclude: • The concept of systems engineering is simple and not revolutionary, but The application of systems engineering is far from simple and is revolutionary.

"In the application of the BIOX® technology, high tailings grade (2-16 g/t) may be generated with a decrease in overall gold recovery, which sometimes make it economically unattractive. This paper investigated the causes of the high tailings grade by using samples from the Bogoso BIOX plant. Partial chemical analysis, diagnostic tests and cyanidation optimisation studies were conducted to invoke understanding into the high tailings grades. Diagnostic study on the tailings showed 48.34% of gold in carbonaceous matter, 17.12% in quartz, 13.40% as liberated gold, 11.51% imbedded in sulphides and the remaining 9.65% in carbonates. Optimum cyanidation recovery of 90.4% was established for the BIOX concentrate at 7 kg/t NaCN, 40-50 g/L activated carbon and residence time of 40 hours. The recovery was sensitive to carbon and cyanide concentrations but additional cyanide was not economical. High preg-robbing indices of 72.7% and 64.4% were recorded for the BIOX product and the flotation concentrate respectively. This confirms the inability of the BIOX process to deactivate carbonaceous matter, which remains a serious precursor for low overall gold recoveries and high CIL tailings. INTRODUCTION Gold ores may be broadly classified as refractory and non-refractory. Non-refractory ores are easy to treat but refractory materials require complicated flowsheets for metal extraction (Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001; Marsden and House, 2006). As near surface non-refractory gold deposits are getting depleted, the increasing price of gold and increasing demand for gold, have encouraged many gold producing companies to treat refractory ores for gold recovery. The refractory behaviour of these ores may be due to the presence of sulphides, tellurides, cyanicides and/or carbonaceous matter. Refractory ores do not respond well to conventional cyanidation as the gold is either occluded by or in solid solution in sulphides, or is in association with cyanicides (Marsden and House, 2006). Further, carbonaceous matter preg-robs gold during leaching (Osseo-Asare et al, 1984; Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001). The two major causes of refractoriness are the presence of sulphides and carbonaceous matter, and these render the ore double refractory (Nyavor and Egiebor, 1992). Oxidative pre-treatment processes such as high pressure leaching/oxidation; biological oxidation, ultra-fine grinding and roasting are required to render refractory ores amenable to conventional cyanidation (Marsden and House, 2006). Biological oxidation, however, has become the preferred pre-treatment route because it is more environmentally friendly and convenient even where only partial oxidation is required. Comparative tests have demonstrated that bioleaching can achieve the same or better results than roasting or pressure leaching in terms of gold recovery (Yannopoulos, 1991; Brierley, 1997). Further, biological treatment processes are more cost-effective, environmentally friendly and safer."

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) has recently developed a series of models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine (CM) with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations in an exhaust curtain working face. CFD models utilizing species transport model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The study illustrates the gas distribution in the slab (second) cut. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15% of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85% directed into the return. These models were compared to a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The models were validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100% redirected, equally divided case. This paper describes the validation of the models based on experimental data and the gas distribution results of the CFD models. INTRODUCTION To control methane gas and dust concentrations on continuous mining operations, it is important to provide sufficient quantity of fresh air from the end of tubing or curtain to the active face. In this region, operating machine-mounted water sprays and fan-powered, flooded bed scrubbers can significantly increase the amount of airflow reaching the face [1-3]. However, when an entry is large, especially in higher coal seams, the water spray configuration and the scrubber capacity may not be adequate to maintain sufficient forward airflow to confine the dust cloud to the face. Dust can roll back toward the machine operator as a result [4]. Currently, several coal mines having negligible gas emissions in higher coal seams (2.4 to 3.0 m [8 to 10ft.] thick) with exhaust tubing systems redirect the scrubber discharge back towards the face in an effort to improve dust collection. NIOSH studied the redirected scrubber exhaust techniques for dust and gas control in a full scale CM gallery to assess its potential for industry-wide application [5]. For a CM face, previous studies have concluded that the behavior of gas and respirable dust is a complex process. The distribution/dispersion and transport of gas and respirable dust after they are liberated at the face are governed mainly by their mass properties, the movement pattern of the ventilation air, and interactions with the mining machine and water droplets created by the external water spray systems used for dust control [6-10]. To understand these behaviors in a complex CM environment and to evaluate the effectiveness of various control techniques, numerical modeling has become a necessary supplement to laboratory experiments and field studies."

The Loesche Mill, also known as the Disc Roll Mill, is a special type of roller mill in which the grinding surfaces consist of two rollers assembled over a horizontal disc or table which rotates at a relatively low speed. This design is particularly applicable to industry's present day demand for large capacity grinding mills.
