"Overburden strata deformation monitoring is one of the key problems in ground control. Using geophysical method through surface drilling to detect strata deformation is commonly used in the industry. In this paper, a geophysical method based on the distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) system were conducted in the laboratory, where a DOFS-based strata deformation monitoring experiment was performed with three physical models. The results show that the DOFS method precisely detects the rock mass deformation and strata structure forming with the Brillouin frequency shifts (BFS) representation. The BFS curves are divided into three phases, which reflects the horizontal three zones developed in the overburden. The BFS distribution presents a multiple stages form, the 1st stage corresponds to the caving zone and the 2nd stage corresponds to the fracture zone. Based on the multiple stages form, the evolution of the water flowing through fractured zone have been determined and the controlling effect of key strata over the water flowing fracture has been pointed out. In the end, the comparison validation proves the accuracy and reliability of this method, and it could be a new approach for the ground control research. INTRODUCTION Overburden rock strata above the work face space will propagate from slight deformation, part destruction to violent movement because of the underground coal mining. It is fundamental and an intrinsic requirement of ground control to monitor the mining-induced rock mass deformation.[1] Overburden strata have their significant mechanical behaviors and movement under damage deformation and fracture. Overburden strata deformation affect the mining ground pressure control directly, and performance in the relationship of supporting equipment and the surrounding rock, the mining-induced fracture distribution and the loss of underground water resource, the ground surface structure stability and the ecological environment.[2] From the perspective of the concept of safe and efficient scientific coal mining: the overburden strata deformation is an important part of mining method selection and reasonable supporting solutions decision which can solve the issues like the roof supporting force calculation, overburden fracture distribution and gas drainage, ground subsidence, separation of coal and rock control and top-coal recovery rate and so on. From the perspective of green and ecological mining: the overburden strata deformation is the key basis of studying the mining-induced ground subsidence and mining area ecological damage, and such engineering problem like environmental protection in mining area, ecological restoration in mining subsided land and the water conservation in fragile ecology area of mining could be solved based on it.[3-6] Therefore, the mining-induced overburden strata deformation is the key of ground control and needs to be controlled artificially."

"INTRODUCTION This research produced a shotcrete formulation that extends beyond stabilization and can be used to restore the structural integrity of damaged infrastructure. The primary challenge was to develop a shotcrete or gunite with structural strength within a few minutes to prevent parasitic loading and allow ingress into damaged structures within a few minutes of the mix formulation being applied. This also applies to mining conditions where rapid support of progressive failures can minimize failure. An additional benefit was the discovery that the product had extremely high adhesion properties in addition to high flexural strengths. The approach to product design was the development of “single bag” dry mixes that are entirely self-contained, can be rapidly transported anywhere in the field or underground, and be deployed using simple equipment. Dry mix eliminates issues relevant to high shear water mixing, as water is added in the form of a mist at the point of delivery; thus low W/C can be achieved. However, as there is no onsite powder mixing, the product must have a high degree of inherent homogeneity. A commercial version of this material is currently offered as Minova’s Tekcrete Fast® product which has been successfully deployed in the mining industry and is currently being used in civil, construction and tunneling operations. The material can rapidly stabilize unstable ground in metal/nonmetal and coal mines. This paper described the technology development, product testing results and applications in mining and civil applications. BACKGROUND The original development of this product was to complete rapid stabilization of shock damaged structures, which falls outside the purview of normal construction and mining practices, due to the critical time issue and the nature of the damaged structure. The stabilization of damaged structures requires materials and equipment that can be rapidly deployed to place materials that have very rapid strength development. These materials need to be placeable at a distance to provide some degree of safety to the responders. In addition, the materials must be able to adhere to structural surfaces that have not been specially prepared and conditioned, and may also be highly fractured, dusty, wet, and quite possibly hot or extremely cold. The technology for the rapid delivery of large volumes of cementitious materials to vertical or even overhead surfaces currently exists. Pneumatic delivery (shotcreting) has been used in construction for over 100 years (American Shotcrete Association, 2014). Shotcreting has played a major role in structures like the Washington D.C. Metro subway system and been used in underground mining applications routinely to serve as part of the primary and secondary support system when used in conjunction with traditional roof bolts. Numerous rapid setting cements are commercially available. They are used for rapid repair of surfaces such as bridge decks, pavements, and commercial floors, as well as structural repairs of vertical and overhead surfaces. Few of these products are specifically marketed for use in shotcrete applications. The majority of rapid setting cements are based on, or at least contain, Portland cement as a principle component. Other components are added that help provide early strength, such as high alumina cement (HAC), organic polymers, chemical accelerators (which can also be added during concrete batching), and calcium sulfate hemihydrate (e.g. gypsum plaster) (Lea, 1971). Cementitious mortars prepared with some of these cements can achieve compressive strengths of 6.8 – 13.8 MPa (1,000-2,000 psi) within 1 hour. However, Portland cement mortar and concrete typically require many weeks of proper curing to reach significant levels of their ultimate strengths, even when used with set accelerators. Infrastructures continue to age and drinking water supplies are becoming scarce in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. (FKCI) was engaged by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to complete the River Supply Conduit Improvement Upper Reach—Unit 7 Project (RSC7). Two tunnel sections were bored using a 2.64 meter diameter Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) and a 4.12 meter diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBTBM) to excavate approximately 3,733 meters (3.7 km) of tunnels through highly abrasive late-Pleistocene-age Quaternary alluvial deposits (Old Alluvium) and Holocene age Young Alluvium deposits above the water table. This paper discusses the challenges encountered managing the TBM’s equipment degradation, use of soil conditioners, cutterhead wear, torque and advance rates while maintaining the necessary face-pressures and parameters to limit over excavation and ground settlement.

Like the Arizona jeans commercial says: Arizona's not just a state, its a state of mines. Nearly 300 mines operate in Arizona making it the largest nonfuel mining state in the nation. Although copper is king in Arizona's mineral complex, nonmetallic minerals play important roles both regionally and nationally. Throughout Arizona's mineral resource development history industrial minerals have dominated over the metals for most, but not recent years. The State's metal mining industry which makes Arizona the number one mining state in the United States is a relatively young phenomenon. Arizona was an important industrial mineral producer long before her metal mining industry got started. Salt, phosphates, silicates, and oxides as food additives, tanning chemicals, gemstones, components of aboriginal ordnance, pigments, and construction materials are among the minerals produced long before copper, gold, silver, and the other metals became important. Around 92 % of Arizona's mineral industry is made up of nonfuel minerals, 86 % of that is accounted for by copper. Another 4 % is taken up by copper byproducts of molybdenum, silver, and gold. The remaining 10% of the production is occupied by non-fuel, non-metallic minerals. Arizona's 1994 industrial mineral production of nearly $380 million ranks us among the top 25 in the nation and higher than the total mineral production of at least 15 states.

Texasgulf Inc. currently operates an open pit phosphate mine in the central coastal plain of North Carolina. The area of phosphate deposition lies within the Aurora Phosphate district which consists of an embayment which is in the center of the Neogene phosphate deposition. A variety of solid and liquid fertilizer products are produced at the Texasgulf complex. One of these products is known as North Carolina Natural Phosphate (NCNP). New potential for use of unacidulated natural phosphate, now exists in regions with acid soils due to the discovery of the findings from recent research, cost advantages, and moves to reduce chemical inputs.

This paper deals with the effects of air leakage from intake to return airways through a series of stoppings on the analysis of coal mine ventilation. The mathematical model which assumes continuous leakage along adjoining intake and return airways is reviewed, and a new mathematical approach is presented based upon the concentrated leakage through individual stoppings. The procedure incorporating the new method in the analysis of coal mine ventilation networks is also discussed.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. This district consists of both underground and surface operations. The East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is one of the major orebodies in this district. Subsurface caving of the EESS has been carried out in a systematic series of mining lifts dating back almost 30 years. Present production is from the third lift (Deep Ore Zone), which is scheduled to peak at 80,000 mtpd during 2009, with this rate sustained through 2015. The orebody is proven below the existing caving level, with the next vertical block called the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ). This paper presents an overview of the DMLZ Mine based on recent feasibility level study. The mine is being designed for a peak production rate of 29.2 million mtpy, with 1,803 total ore draw points spread over a panel caving footprint of about 1.3km by 375m. The present reserves for this mine total 501 million tonnes. Located 1,400-1,800m below the original surface, the DMLZ will be one of the deepest caving operations in the world. Production is scheduled to commence in 2015. Discussion is provided on most design aspects including; caving methodology and layouts, geotechnical predictions and risks, ore handling systems, ventilation design and associated infrastructure, high-lift pumping system, cost estimation and expenditure scheduling.

High pressure fluid energy grinding, or jet milling, is a versatile method of continuously fracturing solids into fine particles to gain substantial increases in exposed surface area. Applications in the minerals industries include calcium carbonate, talc, barytes, mica, diatamaceous earth, bauxite, rutile, coal, kaolin, sepiolite, diamonds, etc. The basic principles can be extended to provide continuous drying and delivery of discrete particles from a wet process slurry. The main design and operational features of jet mills and dryers are described, relating energy consumption for both air and steam milling and hot air drying techniques. Mean particle sizes in the order of 1 micron are achieveable from pre-milled feeds, or maintained from similar slurries in the drying mode. Aspects of feed preparation and multi-stage processing are discussed.

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. I was asked here today to discuss the first long-term freight rate contract ever signed by a U.S. railroad and shipper. That was ICG's contract with the hoosier energy company to haul coal from southern Illinois to an Indiana power plant. I?ll also talk about why you can expect to see more such contracts in the future But first, let me tell you a little bit about the Illinois central gulf railroad and why coal contracts are so important to us. ICG is a principal mid-American freight carrier. We are one of the ten largest railroads in the united states and one of the ten largest coal-hauling railroads. ICG links the industrial great lakes region with the warm weather ports of the gulf coast. Some of the major points on our route map are Chicago; Indianapolis; Omaha; Kansas City; Memphis; St. Louis; and, of course, baton rouge and new Orleans.

As with the slogans of Madison Avenue, catch words or phrases frequently become topical. Much is heard these days of the confrontation between governments of developing countries and international mining capital. In actual fact, sadly there are too few cases of anything as positive as confrontation because such an action at least signifies a dialogue which may begin badly but end up fruitfully. Instead we have in general a climate of indifference and fear with the mining companies of note marking off most of the developing world as being unsafe for investment. There is an unreal air to this damaging impasse. The common sense and objectivity which are prerequisites of positive action are lost in a swirling cloud of mythology, embraced largely by governments. Let us examine some of the dangerous misconceptions.

High-intensity wet magnetic separators have been successfully introduced into the mineral processing field over the past ten to fifteen years, due largely to rapid advancements in magnet design. Wet magnetic separation, until recent years, was applied solely to the concentration of minerals of high magnetic susceptibility, such as magnetite, at relatively coarse sizes. Now, however, high-intensity separators are capable of treating weakly paramagnetic minerals and have extended the range of treatable particle size down to about one micrometre(1,2). . One of the more recent-high-intensity separators developed is the Kolm¬Marston Marston type high-gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) (3,4) It consists basically of an iron-clad solenoid surrounding a matrix material - a fine, ferromagnetic steel wool or expanded metal lath. A schematic diagram of the device is shown in Figure 1. Large, highly localized, pertebations of the magnetic field are created by the ferromagnetic matrix. It is these field gradients that are instrumental in developing large magnetic forces which act on the mineral particles. Operation of the separator is simple. Slurried sample is fed through the matrix and, depending upon the mineral parameters of particle size and magnetic susceptibility and. the operating parameters of flow rate, field strength and feed weight, some particles will be attracted to and adhere to the magnetized matrix, while the others will flow through the matrix. The separation is completed by later removing the background magnetic field and flushing the captured mineral particles into a separate container. The process can also be applied on a continuous basis (S).

This paper addresses the relative long-term cost and resource position of new and existing ferrochromium production in selected Market Economy Countries (MEC'S). The market impact of new ferrochromium production in nations such as India and the Philippines and the continuing change in international trading patterns are also evaluated. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines, Department of Interior, Minerals Availability Program appraisal that evaluated the cost and availability of chromite and ferrochromium production from the demonstrated resources of 80 producing or potential mining operations in 10 market economy countries.

Use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to solve informational needs in isolated and restricted underground mining environments will be reviewed, giving specifications of some past and currently available systems. The advantages and disadvantages of using various frequencies, system configurations, and specific components, including their construction standards and capability, will be discussed. The remaining challenges to more widespread use of RFID systems for personnel and vehicle tracking will be identified, and recommendations concerning operating environment capabilities will be detailed. Finally, the ultimate requirements for maintaining system integrity during and following a coal mine emergency will be discussed.

The extensive heterogeneity of coal is a fact long recognized by scientists and engineers. However, until recent years the practical implications of such heterogeneity have more often been realized from an undesirable experience than from knowledge or forethought. Variations in the properties of coal, even within the same seam, eventually lead to procedural modifications in mining, handling, preparation and utilization. The concepts considered here propose an enhanced application of information, detailing these properties, realizing the uniqueness of any given coal seam but the practicality of a common approach. Coal preparation practice has been designed primarily for the control of ash and sulfur content to meet market specifications which are similarly specified, Other physical characteristics of size and friability are also commonly employed and, to a lesser extent, properties which are implications of rank. The consideration of petrographic data as indicators of origin, thus total physical and chemical properties, has generally been overlooked as a realistic tool in-the exploitation of coal as a resource. The evolution of descriptive techniques, whether petrographic, physical, or chemical, capable of universal application with any rank of coal, is still beset with problems.

I'm glad this meeting is being held in New York. First, because the city is close to my home in New Jersey, only 35 minutes from Times Square ..... if I were to come to Times Square between two and three in the morning. Otherwise it takes two hours. But even more important is the fact that all of you good people from around the country and around the world will enjoy the unique experience of that warm friendly atmosphere in the greater metropolitan area, something that you won't see any place else on the face of the earth. Seriously, the greater metropolitan area has been a large part of my industrial, cultural and spiritual experience. There are many aspects of it which I find disagreeable but on net I would rather live in this area, at least for the time being, than any other area of the United States. As a consultant I find contact with financial institutions, corporate headquarters, information sources and a great many production and research facilities a valuable asset to my activity.

Statistical studies at Cyprus Pima Mine indicate that samples from 22 blastholes are necessary for determining average copper grades, within a desired range of precision, for mine-model blocks by arithmetic averaging. The average number of holes in such blocks is 14. Many considerations show that more holes will not be drilled for sampling. A way to determine block grades more reliably than by" arithmetic averaging was sought. Thus far arithmetic averaging has proven to be the best procedure for the particular operation characteristics despite the small number of samples. It naturally follows that expenditure of great effort in sampling blasthole cuttings is unwise.

In an exchange of views with the Program Chairman for the Technical Session on Industrial Minerals and Investment in Foreign Countries, it was agreed that it would be more interesting to approach the problem of mineral investment in foreign countries in a more general framework and not confine it to industrial minerals. Therefore, this Bureau of Mines report is proposed to examine current attitudes toward investments in foreign mineral resources and restraints that they impose on investments necessary to assure supply for future global mineral needs.

A recent advance in slope dewatering-depressurization and stabilization is the use of vacuum assist horizontal drainage. (Brawner and Pakalnis) Horizontal drains have been used for several decades to reduce water pressures in slopes to improve stability. The benefit from vacuum assist arises from an increased hydraulic gradient caused by an induced negative atmospheric pressure. A research program included a laboratory model whereby the effects of vacuum drainage were evaluated. Three case studies are described where the technique has been successful. The first is in a rock slope where flows increased from 0.1 1/min. under gravity drainage up to 1.2 1/min, upon vacuum. The second study involves installation of 17 drains placed at a slightly downward gradient to intercept and de- pressurize aquifers under a major tar sand deposit in Canada. The third study was on a large open pit copper mine in British Columbia where flow increased about 30 per cent.

In order to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining States in the United States, the Congress passed and the President signed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (Public Law 95-87 or the Act) on August 3, 1977. Within one year after passage, the Secretary of the Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for State regulatory programs under the Act and to allow States to assume primary regulatory responsibility. In order to implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules, but ones which take into consideration the distinct differences between surface coal mining and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary and promulgated on March 13, 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included (1) a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process, (2) substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control, and (3) provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 20 acre feet, and certain public facilities and urban areas.
