INTRODUCTION Zortman Mining Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pegasus Gold Corporation of Spokane, Washington. Pegasus has been producing gold and silver from the Zortman and Landusky mines since 1979. The Zortman and Landusky mines are two distinct open pit mines located approximately 6 kilometers apart in the Little Rockies Mining District of north central Montana. The two mines use large-tonnage, low- grade heap leaching techniques to efficiently process the gold and silver ore. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Little Rockies rise abruptly 914 metres from the surrounding plains to about 1829 metres above sea level. The topography is quite steep, making efficient leach pad construction a major challenge. The climate is semi-arid with moderate summers and occasionally severe winters. Freezing temperatures usually arrive in late October or early November, influencing the effectiveness of leaching operations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The geology of the Little Rocky Mountains consists of steeply dipping sedimentary ridges forming an elliptical dome surrounding a core of intruding syenite porphyry. Within the syenite porphyry are well fractured and mineralized shear zones where the existing reserves and open pits are located. The ore is presently divided into oxidized, mixed, and sulfide. Only the oxides and mixed zones that are of ore grade are placed on the leach pads. The syenite porphyry host rock enables effective leaching of gold and silver to depths of 61 metres, having a major impact on leach pad construction costs. MINING All mining since 1979 has been by contractor. This enabled initial mining to commence without capital investment in equipment. Through competitive negotiations, Pegasus has been able to keep contract mining costs at levels very close to what would be experienced if Pegasus had purchased equipment initially. Contracts are negotiated yearly and are based on a unit price and haul distance for ore and waste. Haul distances have ranged from as little as 457 metres to as much as 3,050 metres. At present, Pegasus is developing a 27,000,000-tonne leach pad at the Landusky project that is adjacent to the minine area. This design feature will reduce the mining cost by 20 percent over the life of the mine. In 1987, over 5,900,000 tonnes of ore and 3,200,000 tonnes of waste will be mined at the Landusky project. Through 1986, 13,763,000 tonnes of ore have been mined at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.60:l at the Zortman project, and 13,005,000 tonnes of ore at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.79:l have been mined at the Landusky project. Current mining reserves are 32,769,000 tonnes of ore at a waste- to-ore strip ratio of 0.59:l. Through efficiencies of large-scale heap leaching, Pegasus has been able to lower the mining cutoff from 0.34 grams per tonne gold to 0.27 grams per tonne gold. This has reduced the mining cost per tonne of ore h percent through a reduction in strip ratio of 14 percent. Beginning in 1984, all pits were designed based on computer-generated "floating cone" pits. The geologic models were developed by Pegasus staff with a series of economic models evaluated. The resulting computer-generated pits were used as a guideline in designing the mine plans, including haul roads for final calculation of tons and grade. Input to the floating cone models consisted of mining cost, processing cost, cutoff grade (0.34 grams gold per tonne), recovery (67 percent) and gold price. Due to the gold being deposited primarily on the fractures of the syenite host rock, no crushing of ore is needed prior to leaching. This characteristic of the ore is a key in being able to profitably mine and process gold ore at an average grade of 0.69 grams of gold per tonne. Strict blasting control is also a key in success of the leaching operation. A system of splitting ore and waste in blast patterns has been devised to reduce dilution. "The ground water heat pump system lades underground hot water which can be heated or cooled by heat exchanger in water source heat pump air conditioner. This system replaces the model of heating of air-conditioning by refrigerator and boiler. In this paper, the formation conditions of hot water energy in Shan Dong are analyzed in order to achieve the purpose of energy conservation and emissions reduction by taking full advantage of water resources such as water pouring and return water of beatification during the productive process of underground metal mine. In order to analyze the issue better, the paper points out some ways and methods for geothermal water often used in underground metal mine. This paper also presents the advantages of the technology of water source heat pump that is applied into underground metal mine. Here is a case study of comprehensive utilization of water source in a certain underground metal mine in Ji Ning. This mine, according to its own actual situation, designs heat pump heat exchange system which is used for indoor heating of buildings and bath for staff. It turns out that the system can save 23% water per year, cut down 3.303 million KW electric energy, and reduce 4160t emission of carbon dioxide. It is concluded that the technology of water source heat pump has broad application prospects in underground metal mine. Therefore, the results show that it is an ideal way to change the present structure of cooling and heating source in metal mine.Introduction In recent years, overuse of fossil fuels has posed a grave threat onto the environment, which makes renewable energy a more important status in energy structure. Development and utilization of renewable energy has become an important direction. Water source heat pump technology is to use solar energy stored in water as cold/heat source to convert energy. Currently, this technology has been widely used in some advanced countries. However, due to facers of implementation technology and component costs, there is still a gap in water source heat pump technology between China and these advanced countries. According to (Blum et al 2011) that after in-depth study, water source heat pump technology has developed rapidly in China recently, and the gap is gradually reduced. Groundwater source heat pump system as a kind of high efficiency, energy-saving and environmentally friendly technology in recent years, more and more get the people's attention. At the same time, its practical application has also been rapid development. Based on (Ni et al 2015) that According to the relevant departments of the prediction, the technology will become the 21st century the most efficient heating and cooling technology."

The Henderson Mill has operated over a wide range of production rates, feed grades, manpower levels and recovery targets since start-up in 1976. Henderson Mill personnel, both management and hourly, have successfully responded to these changes by not only maintaining unit costs, but by actually decreasing unit costs. Methods of cost reduction have included conventional austerity programs, innovative technological improvements and creative work schedules. This paper addresses both maintenance and operating cost reductions and efficiency improvements.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the advantages and disadvantages of single tube and twin tubes for subway systems. Different aspects such as diameter of the tunnel (tunnel spaceproofing), configuration of subway line and stations, impacts on passenger safety and evacuation, ventilation system as well as rail system for each solution were evaluated and compared. In addition, a multi-criterion approach is established to facilitate the decision making for these two different subway systems. The practical example of a mega project has been discussed and the details of the decision-making process has been explained. This proposed multicriterion can be used to facilitate selecting the best subway system in any urban areas.

INTRODUCTION This method is a variation of cut-and-fill mining where either the wall rock or the vein is too unconsolidated to permit safe mining by conventional cut-and-fill methods. Basic development consists of driving a 2.4 x 2.7-m (8 x 9-ft) haulage heading laterally in the footwall side of the vein. Crosscuts are driven over to the vein at 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Then the vein, at each inter¬section, is mined out to a distance of about 9 m (30 ft ) above the track level. After the installation of an ore chute, scrams or intermediate drifts are driven in both directions along the vein. Mining then starts imme¬diately below the level bounding the upper limit of the stope. A cut varying between 3 and 4.2 m (10 and 14 ft) in depth and mined for a distance of 45.7 m (150 ft )along the strike is taken from the orepass in each direction (Fig. 1). In this mined-out void, the floor of the cut is equipped with 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) caps hitched into the wall with steel saddle hitches installed on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers. Double wood stringers, 152.4 x 152.4 mm (6 x 6 in.), are then installed on 1.2-m (4-ft) centers longitudinally down the length of the stope. Reinforc¬ing wire mesh is also placed, overlying each mat of timber. Directly above the stringers, stulls are installed from hanging wall to footwall to hold the timber in place during the sand-filling operation. Then a cement¬sand mixture in a ratio of about 1:10 weight is poured to a depth of about 2.4 m (8 ft). The entire cycle is then repeated down to the scram drift. Another variation of timbering is illustrated in Fig. 2. There is a vein width of approximately 5.5 m (18 ft) with the same unconsolidated ground conditions. The primary difference between handling this situation and the previously described undercut-and-fill method is that standard timbered sets are installed in each excavated stoping void rather than stulls. Once again the basic method is to work down the ore block from an upper timbered drift to a lower timbered drift. Cuts are taken from a timbered raise with a chute on the stope side. Each piece of ground excavated is essentially two sets high, 5.5 m (18 ft), by two sets wide, 5.5 m (18 ft), by the length of the cut along the strike of the vein. The timbered sets are 2.4 x 2.4 x 2.4 m (8 x 8 x 8 ft). The net result is, therefore, two sets of timber on a top floor separated by doubled-up 76-mm (3-in.) lagging from

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. To assess the potential for radioactive pollution unique to the environmental conditions of the Bacau phosphogypsum waste dump, surface samples were taken, drillings were performed on the entire waste dump's height, and the Ra226 distribution on the height and surface considered to contain a medium content of the radium of 0.57 Bq/gr was studied. Thus, the waste dump's radioactive potential was estimated at 30-40 Ci in equivalent Ra226. Also analyzed was the granulometric composition of the phosphogypsum and the distribution of Ra226 on granulometric orders, which indicated that the radium was concentrated in the very fine fractions. Parameters were set up for the classification by hydrocycloning to obtain a fine class (less than 41 microns) having a radium content of more than 0.9 Bq/gr and a coarse class having less than 0.37 Bq/gr. A chemical process was devised for removal of the radium from the phosphogypsum with the possibility for recovering the contained sulfur.

Four samples of galena, each prepared differently, dry ground chalcopvrite and real gar have shown various quantities of liberated sulfur corresponding up to nine equivalent monolavers on their surfaces as determined by the solvent extraction/UV analysis of sulfur using ethanol. The pretreatment of a dry ground galena sample with acidified ammonium chloride or neutral, saturated sodium chloride solutions rendered the mineral readily floatable. The collectorless floatabilities of galena pretreated with the former solution and of drv ground chalcopvrite have been evaluated in reference to the natural floatability of sulfur using the critical surface tension of floatability approach with aqueous methanol solutions. It is shown that the amount of sulfur- on these samples can be correlated with their flotation rate, which was found to he first order within the critical surface tension range. The larger the concentration of surface sulfur, the faster the sulfide mineral floats, thus, the greater its flotation rate constant.

Many factors must be considered when performing engineering and construction work for a major minerals project. Dravo's Afton copper smelter in British Columbia illustrates some of the E&C factors considered when setting up this new operation. In March 1978, Afton Mines Ltd., a Tech Corp. subsidiary, began blister copper production at the world's first integrated copper ore mining, milling, and smelting operation to use Top Blow Rotary Converter (TBRC) process smelting technology. This key TBRC smelting element is licensed by INCO Ltd. to Dravo Corp. The TBRC process uses a single vessel of modular design. It rotates for mixing and provides complete processing capability, from concentrate through blister copper. The Afton facility is about 16 km west of Kamloops, a town in south-central British Columbia. To make its operation as economic as possible, Afton officials considered several options for the copper smelter, the first in modern times in the province. Inability to extract precious metals-primarily gold-from the concentrates ruled out hydro-metallurgical processes. The final choice was between a conventional electric furnace/ Peirce-Smith converter combination and the TBRC process. The TBRC process was chosen for its versatility in processing the various Afton concentrates and grades and its 40% lower capital cost compared to the electric furnace converter system. The TBRC smelter -including concentrate slurry receiving, drying, storage, smelting, off-gas cleaning, and copper casting-had an installed cost of about $25 million. In December 1974, a pilot program was conducted by Teck, Dravo, and INCO at INCO's Port Colborne, Ontario, research facility. The pilot program demonstrated the TBRC's ability to smelt, convert, and clean copper slags. After the successful pilot effort, Dravo performed additional research to find an effective fixation system for high grade, intermittent SO2 gases. Once the go-ahead was given, design and procurement for the Afton copper smelter was provided by the Denver Division, Dravo Engineers and Constructors. Commonwealth Construction, Vancouver, constructed all Afton facilities. Afton's single furnace smelter is designed to produce 25-kt/a blister copper in 363-408 kg cake form. The product is sold to England for electrolytic refining. The TBRC process is only one of several innovations proposed by Dravo and chosen by Afton to insure the most modern smelter in North America and meet all British Columbia's environmental restrictions. Conventional smelting methods use a separate furnace for each process step. The TBRC process employs but one furnace. The Afton TBRC vessel measures 6.4 m in length and 4.3 m in diameter. The furnace is supported on a set of motor-driven rollers. These permit the vessel to rotate at variable speeds to 40 rpm. Rotation provides good mixing, high reaction rates, and effective heat transfer from the refractory sides to the molten bath resulting in a low thermal gradient. The furnace can tilt through a full 360° for charging, firing, and pouring. Smelting at Afton is accomplished in sequential fashion. Flotation concentrate and limestone flux are initially charged to the hot, empty vessel. Using the water-cooled, oxy-fuel lance, the initial charge is smelted. Once sufficient molten bath is obtained and slagging completed, the metallic concentrate is charged. The application of microwaves has a demonstrated potential for the ultimate removal of water from fine coal. The principle of microwave drying of fine coal is based on the selective absorption of microwaves by water. Coal is a poor absorber of microwaves. As a result, water can be removed from fine coal by selectively heating water molecules. One of the difficult problems drilling microwave heating is the exact determination of temperature in the core of the materials. The electromagnetic energy absorption in coal/water mixtures during microwave drying is controlled by several factors including the dielectric properties of the constituents. In this paper the dielectric properties of various ranks of coal are presented as a function of frequency and moisture content. The measured dielectric data are incorporated into electromagnetic and thermal models of coal which predict the energy absorption and temperature distribution during microwave heating.

Understanding mill charge motion is important. In the charge, the centre of gravity is shifted from the rotational centre of the mill system, and its motion is induced by rotation of the mill, while at the same time the charge creates a torque into the mill system. Breakage of ore particles and wear of liners/ball media are closely linked to the motion. To study these phenomena in a physically correct manner, numerical models for different parts of the mill system are needed. Validations of such models are scarce, because of the difficulty to measure in a tumbling mill. Experimental measurements in a lab mill were done for diverse load cases: varying feed materials, mill fillings, mill speeds and pulp liquids. The mill is set up to directly measure the charge-induced torque. The accuracy is good with relative uncertainty smaller than ±2% for relevant load cases. A full three dimensional numerical model of the whole mill is used to predict induced torque. Agreement between predicted and measured torque at steady-state is good. In addition, the model can accurately predict the mill start-up behavior for torque and mill power. This proves that the model is physically correct, and can be used for full-scale mills.

INTRODUCTION Construction of a major intercepting sewer in Brooklyn, New York involved tunneling in soil over several subway lines. In two instances the clearance between the subway and sewer was sufficiently close that concern was raised about the influence of the new construction. Prior to each critical crossing, analytical studies were performed which characterized the tunneling influence. It was demonstrated that with adjustments in construction procedures the crossings could be made without affecting the integrity of the subway linings. A comprehensive program of instrumentation and full-time monitoring was undertaken to ensure that any unforeseen adverse developments during crossing would be recognized. The successful crossings were subsequently made with minimal influence. Reported herein are the special construction conditions for the two crossings, the analytical simulation of behavior, and the results of monitoring on the subway linings. SEWER TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION AND EXISTING SUBWAYS The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer is a 2600 m (8600 ft) long tunnel which is part of a major water pollution control project in New York City. For clarity of nomenclature, the sewer is termed a 'tunnel' while the rapid transit structures are termed 'subways'. For routine construction, the tunnel was mined by hand with a 3.2 m (10 ft-5 in.)

A metallurgical complex to recover gold from highly refractory arsenical ore was recently commissioned by Sao Bento Mineraco. The plant, with a nominal capacity of 20 000 tonnes per month, is situated in the Minas Gerais province of Brazil. The process consists of run-of-mine milling, flotation, pressure oxidation of the concentrate, carbon-in-leach, elution and electrowinning, and effluent disposal. The paper provides an account of the investigations that resulted in the decision to install the pressure oxidation circuit, process and engineering design and plant start up. A comparison is made between the results achieved during the first two years of production and the design parameters.

Based on theoretical and experimental researches of phosphate and carbonate minerals flotation in the presence of soluable glass at various pH values and sodium silicate concentrations, it has been established that the presence of soluble glass in solution leads to formation of silicate compounds on the surface of phosphate and carbonate minerals causing change in their floatability for the worse. The harmful influence of soluable salts is done by tying of collector as metallic soaps, forming precipitates on the surface of minerals to be floated and causing their depression of flotation, and breaching of the froth etc. Depressing action of slimes and products of interaction with collector depends on the ratio of values and signs of potentials of the mineral surfaces. The possibility of phosphate and gangue minerals separation can be evaluated by comparing the minimum-necessary concentrations of collector required for their flotation.

An evaluation of the use of air cooling power as an index of the thermal environment is discussed. A body temperature prediction -. model based on body temperature tests, a concept linked to a maximum safe body temperature and the predicted fourth hour body temperature which depends on the rate of heat accumulation (heat storage) within the body has been developed and tested. This has led to the conceptual development of a personal response heat stress meter calibrated to the physiology of the personnel within the workplace. The proposed heat stress meter will be able to measure workplace environmental parameters such as air temperature, humidity and air velocity and the user can either select or manually enter other heat stress parameters such as work rate, clothing type and subject's personal response to heat. With a built-in computer program, the meter will calculate the ACP of the workplace, the fourth hour body core temperature expected and the maximum safe working time allowed for a pre- defined limiting body temperature. A brief description of the work required for developing the meter is included. The potential benefits of such instrument to the mining industry are also evaluated.

Thoron daughter WL&apos;s measured by alpha-spectroscopy and the Kusnetz method are about one-half those of radon daughter WL&apos;s in a uranium mine in Canada.1 A diffusion model can account for the relative concentrations.l Since the Kusnetz technique is most widely used for measuring radon daughter WL&apos;s in uranium mines, a general procedure is derived to extend this method to measurement of WL&apos;s of radon and thoron daughters in air containing their mixtures. Coté P. and Townsend M.G., 1981. A procedure is also suggested for counting radon and thoron daughters by 3-channel [a]-spectroscopy. Errors in WL(Rn) are calculated for standard radon daughter counting procedures when a-decay of both thoron and radon daughters is attributed to radon daughters alone. Providing overall counting times are short, [<]30 min, these errors are generally small. The precision of ß -counting methods is also investigated. A portable 3-channel alpha spectrometer for measurement of radon and thoron daughters in uranium mines or homes is described, Carson D.W., 1979. The computer programs for analyzing the data to give, depending on the mode employed, some or all of the concentrations RaA, RaB, RaC, ThB, ThC and WL of radon and thoron daughters by alpha spectrometric, modified Kusnetz, Rolle and Tsivolglov methods are presented.(l) A commercial apparatus, based on the above prototype, incorporating a microprocessor and built under contract to EMR is now available.(2) A number of personal radiation dosimeters for miners are now being tested in mines. One of these is the CEA dosimeter which uses the track-etch film method, Duport P., Chapuis A.M. and Pradel J., 1979. An apparatus for rapid reading of track-etch films by the spark technique has been described previously, Cross W.G. and Thomasino L., 1970 and Huang V.F., 1975. We have developed such an apparatus for rapid semi-automatic reading of films exposed to radiation from mixtures of radon and thoron daughters in CEA dosimeters. The films used, Kodak LR 115 Type II Strippable, may be stripped rapidly and easily, for counting after irradiation and developing, by use of a special punch and suction technique. The method promises to provide an inexpensive and rapid technique for reading large quantities of personal dosimeter films. However, the present CEA dosimeter has faults in design, leading to a contamination problem. Those films that show contamination cannot be read by automatic means. A commercial apparatus based on the above prototype spark counter and built under contract to EMR is now available.3 1. These computer programs are available on request. 2. In comparison to many mineral commodities, barite has a low unit value. It is mined and sold in low volumes in high-grade (90-98% BaSO4) forms to basically one industry that uses approximately 75% of the free world production. Based upon the above criteria, all factors must be considered in determining if a barite deposit is economical; such as, the type of deposit, mining and milling methods required, transportation to the markets, tariffs, local political conditions, etc. In other words, barite mines are made--not found. The length of this paper precludes any indepth discussion of geology, mining and metallurgy of barite. Most of this information can be found in data already published, such as D. A. Brobst&apos;s bulletin1 on the Barite Resources of the United States.

A patent-applied-for process has been developed in which zinc chloride is extracted by tributyl phosphate in kerosine, and stripped with ethylene glycol or ammoniated ethylene glycol. The anhydrous zinc chloride is precipitated from the glycol as the ammine and zinc chloride is prepared by thermal decomposition with recycle of ammonia. The process permits the production of high grade zinc from scraps and drosses. Its applicability to the recycling of zinc will be illustrated.

"Speakers and attendees of the 2016 Cutting Edge Conference could not be faulted for keeping one eye on the presentations taking place at the Hyatt Regency at LAX in Los Angeles, CA on Nov. 7 and 8 and another on the results of the historic election in the United States that took place on Nov 8. While there was certainly interest in the presidential campaign, there was also a great deal of interest in Measure M on the California ballot. Measure M, which passed easily, is a half-cent sales tax increase that will fund the most ambitious transit expansion in Los Angeles County history.In the coming years, the ballot measure will transform a traffic-choked region by funding the construction of nearly a dozen new rail lines with an estimated $120 billion raised in four decades. Among the projects that could come to fruition are a twin-rail tunnels project through the Sepulveda Pass and new connections in the city.During the update on West Coast projects, Bill Hansmire summed things up with a slide asking “How much work is there on the West Coast,” and his answer was “Billions.”From Seattle, WA south to Los Angeles, there is already a lot of work for tunneling and underground construction experts, and Measure M ensures that there will be plenty of work for decades to come.Currently, The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has three rail projects underway that were funded by Measure R in 2008 — the Regional Connector, the Purple Line subway extension and the Crenshaw/LAX Line that are designed to alleviate the traffic pressure with an eye to more solutions.Measure M is the fourth sales tax increase to fund transportation in L.A. County, bringing the base sales tax rate to 9.25 percent. In some cities, which already levy their own sales tax, the rate would be higher, The Los Angeles Times reported.About 35 percent of the revenue will fund major new transit projects, such as the subway under the Sepulveda Pass, extension of the Gold Line to Claremont, extension of the Crenshaw Line to West Hollywood and acceleration of the Purple Line Subway construction along Wilshire Boulevard to finish in 2024, 10 years earlier than scheduled.About 17 percent would fund a dozen highway improvement projects, such as widening parts of I-5 in the Antelope Valley and southeastern county, adding bus lanes to the Sepulveda Pass section of the 405 freeway and adding truck-only lanes to a section of the 710 freeway."
