In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining's importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA's Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado's Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM's Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the town of Andacollo (population 14,000 people) in Chile’s region four. It is about 56km (35 miles) by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena. Santiago is about480 km (300 miles) south. Site elevation varies between 1,000 and 1,280 m(3,300 and 4,200 ft). The climate at the Andacollo site is moderate but arid. Average annual rainfall is only 130mm (5 in.). Because there is little rain and the temperature varies only a few degrees (14 to 24 C or 57 to 75F), there are no problems with freezing, solution dilution or pad saturation. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

An aggregate resource study was done for southern Washoe County, Nevada, which contains the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area and a population of about 300,000. The study included an inventory of existing operations, projection of future demand, identification of potential aggregate resources based on geology, and determination of economic potential of these resources. Economic potential was determined by the integration of GIS layers that included aggregate potential, distance from market, distance from major and minor transportation arteries, and elevation. The investigation resulted in a determination that resources of high quality aggregate sufficient for future consumption are present in southern Washoe county; the limiting factor for future utilization is accessibility.

Part I describes the general geology of the Florida deposits. As the lucrative Bone Valley Formation is depleted, replacement production will move progressively into areas of total Hawthorn production. The reserves of the immediate future are a mixture of two distinct ore types referred to as the upper (high grade) zone and the lower (low grade) zone. The upper zone is somewhat similar to the Bone Valley Formation that has been Florida's source of production for the past 100 years and will respond favorably to present beneficiation practices. By contrast, the lower zone ore contains significant quantities of dolomite that must be removed in order to produce an acceptable grade pebble or flotation sized product. Part II reviews past practice and describes future trends in mining and ore transportation. This presentation (Part III) is confined to the problems of beneficiation, waste disposal, and environmental regulation.

The mining industry faces many workplace hazards that are a threat to human health and safety. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has found that employees in coal mining are more likely to be killed or sustain an injury or illness than workers in private industry. These injuries are also likely to be more severe (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2007). In recent years, coal mining injuries have attained national attention due to highly publicized disasters. Despite these threats to worker safety and health, the U.S. relies on the mining of coal to meet its need for electrical power, with42% of electricity in the U.S. generated through the burning of coal (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012b; United Mine Workers of America, n.d.). Furthermore, the production of coal continues to increase and reach record levels every year(National Mining Association, 2012; U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012a). For this reason, the coal mining industry must continue to find ways to protect its workers while maintaining productivity. One potential approach to protecting workers while maintaining productivity is through improving the safety culture at coal mines. In order to achieve this culture, operators, employees, the inspectorate, etc. must share a fundamental commitment to safety as a value. This type of culture is known in other industries as a ?safety culture? and can be defined as the characteristics of the work environment, such as the norms, rules, and common understandings that influence facility personnel?s perceptions of the importance that the organization places on safety. Fundamental to improving safety culture within an organization is understanding the existing safety culture; improvements cannot be made without first elucidating areas that require improvement. This manuscript details the process undertaken by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) to assess the safety culture at five underground coal mines across the United States. The purpose of this manuscript is to introduce the mining industry to a multi-methodological approach to safety culture assessments. Further, it is the goal of this manuscript to highlight the value of including both quantitative and qualitative methods into safety culture assessments in order to obtain the most comprehensive view of an organization?s safety culture. Because this manuscript focuses solely on the methodology implemented, data and results obtained during the five safety culture assessments will not be presented in this manuscript, but will appear in a future publication.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. The mining industry has waited a long time for the resurgence in commodity prices and demand for its products that it is now experiencing. Base and precious metals prices have reached levels not seen before. Coal prices have also shot up. And there are encouraging signs in the uranium market. China’s nearly out-of-control economic growth is said to be the leading driver for much of this resurgence. But demand for energy, metals and building materials in the United States and elsewhere are also major factors. The result is that expansions and new mines for nearly every commodity are in the works.

The unutilized iron ore fines (IOF, − 10 mm, 45% to < 60% Fe(T)) left at various mine sites during blasting and processing are rich in goethetic-hematite associated with high clay and considered a potential iron ore resource. The variation of loss on ignition (LOI) from mines to mines is based on the goethite and clay mineral content. The clay containing below 45 μm is mostly brittle, causing beneficiation problems. The IOF has an LOI of 7.83%, with high silica (5.52%) and alumina (4.57%), and 57.17% of Fe(T) subjected to both conventional deep beneficiation (CDB) and magnetization roasting using high-ash non-coking coal to adopt the suitable upgradation process. The CDB and magnetization roasting concentrate has 62.61% and 67.58% Fe(T) with 64.69% and 85.19% yield, respectively. However, the presence of 6.40% LOI in CDB makes the ore challenging for pelletization. Characterization like X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM), and chemical analysis was used to assess the concentrate quality and potential industrial application.

This paper presents an overview of surface mining activity in the Canadian oil sands and how the mine operators interact with the province of Alberta&apos;s Mine Financial Security Program (MFSP), which took effect April 1, 2011. The MFSP approach to reclamation assurance results in the government of Alberta sharing a portion of reclamation liability through the majority of an oil sand mine&apos;s life. In order to determine the potential fiscal magnitude of this shared liability, an examination of the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate asset retirement obligation (ARO) liabilities and other corporate disclosures is presented. The province of Alberta&apos;s Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF), which formerly secured oil sands mine reclamation activities is discussed. Reclamation costs in the oil sands are poorly understood. The MFSP provides what it characterizes as a conservative estimate of C$75,000/ha, while corporate disclosures by Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. place expected costs at C$180,000/ha. There is significant risk associated with the apparent uncertainty surrounding reclamation costs.

A good quality assurance program at a coal mine or power plant is accurate, timely and consistent. The quality analysis is accurate due to a complete sampling of the coal stream loaded into the unit train. The sample analysis is accurate because standardized testing procedures are applied. Once an analysis is completed, the results must be communicated to the electric utility in a timely manner. The electric utility needs the results to better manage the coal inventory at its power plants. A quality assurance program can also help a mine deliver a consistent product to a utility&apos;s power plants. The importance of accuracy, timeliness and consistency are based on major changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry.

INTRODUCTION The heavy risk inherent in all underground construction projects contributes significantly to the high cost of transportation tunnels. First, the knowledge of this risk leads the engineer to design conservatively. Second, the cost overruns are still common with a high proportion of them originating from corrective measures needed when unforeseen problems develop during excavation. These unforeseen problems includes - encountering unexpected objects, materials and water conditions - experiencing an unforeseen behavior of the materials - damaging property beyond the expected range of influence of the tunnel construction. To minimize these expenses, more emphasis is being placed on well planned and interpreted site investigation programs in the final design and planning stages of the project. It is well known that the cost of a planned excavation is less than the cost of dealing with the same conditions when they are encountered unexpectedly. Therefore, the objective of site investigation is to provide a complete set of reliable data for designers and contractors that is continuous along the projected tunnel alignment. Two alternatives axe available to achieve this objective; - for shallow tunnels, it is often feasible to generate continuous data by drilling appropriately spaced, vertical bore holes and applying sensing techniques for interpolation (1, 8). - for deep tunnels, or certain urban tunnels under existing structures, closely spaced, vertical bore holes are not feasible except for narrow zones at the portals. In such cases direct horizontal penetration may be required that may be complemented by radial sensing to extend the range of information.

The economics of a mineral processing circuit is dependent on the numerous sensors that are critical to optimization and control systems. The sheer volume of sensors results in mines not being able to keep the sensors calibrated. When a sensor goes off calibration, it results in errors which can severely impact plant economics. Normally, these errors are not detected until the error grows and becomes a large (“gross”) error. Undetected errors are not remedied until the next calibration, which on average are a year apart Beamex (2019) [1] across all industries. Classical statistical methods that depend on linear relationships between input and response variables are typically used to find gross errors, but are not effective for highly non-linear and non-stationary operations in mining and mineral processing industries. Calibration of sensors is time-consuming and generally requires physical intervention that results in equipment downtimes causing production losses. Therefore, in situ detection methods are warranted that do not require physical removal of sensors to compare with standard measurements or well-calibrated sensors. Data-mining based techniques and algorithms have high success rate in tackling such problems. This paper presents results from a groundbreaking multi-year big data research project whose goal was to develop data-mining-based original techniques in a multi-sensor environment to identify when sensors start to stray, rather than wait for errors to grow. The carbon stripping (gold) circuit in the Pogo Mine of Alaska was selected for this project. Maintaining strip vessel temperatures at optimum levels is crucial for maximizing gold recoveries at Pogo, and hence the focus was on the temperature sensors of the two strip vessels. An automated algorithm to detect errors in strip vessel temperature sensors was developed that exploited data from multiple sensors in the strip circuit. This algorithm was able to detect with a high success rate when bias errors of magnitude as low as ± 2% were artificially induced into strip vessel temperature data streams. The detection times of about 1 month were much less than the industry average calibration frequency of 1 year. Thus, the algorithm helps detect errors early, without stopping the circuit. The algorithm alarms can serve as triggers when calibrations are done. Experimental methodology along with results, limitations of algorithms, and future research are also presented in this paper.

The centennial celebration of the AIME provides an opportunity to review some aspects of developments in mineral exploration since 1871 and to reflect on the changes that have occurred. During this period seven Factors have fundamentally altered the procedures, techniques and philosophy of mineral exploration. Although most of these developed gradually, and unheralded, they have drastically altered the art of exploration and discovery. 1. ADVANCES IN MINING AND MILLING The development of huge shovels, draglines, trucks and track-mounted drills, to replace the wheelbarrow and single Jack has drastically expanded the rate of production for both underground and surface mining. The development of selective flotation has had a far-reaching affect on mineral exploration and has made it possible to extract metals from the metallurgically complex deposits discovered years before. These developments have reduced the costs of mining and treatment, and have transformed material into ore that was considered waste one hundred years ago. These advances have permitted exploration for progressively lower grade and larger mineral deposits.

Poirier was an underground copper and zinc mine located in Northern Quebec that operated between 1965 and 1975. There are 5 million tonnes of acid-generating tailings, which have contributed acidity and metals to the Kananewesig and Kistabiche Creeks. The final closure plan incorporates the placement of all reactive material into the tails basin, installation of a geomembrane liner over the tailings deposit and a one metre soil layer to protect the liner. The environmental effect of the residual seepage was assessed from an ecological risk perspective. The Reclamation Plan has been accepted, and work commenced in 1998 to restore the site.

In 2002 the authors updated the MFire model developed by the US Bureau of Mines. MineFire, developed by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc. (MVS), uses the MFire model to perform mine fire simulations on typical mine ventilation networks. The MineFire program is capable of producing visual schematics and other analysis tools for input and output of the MFire model. The MFire model, however, was limited to 500 branches and 10 fans. This paper discusses the newly modified MFire model that is now capable of modeling over 5000 branches and over 400 fans among other expansions and improvements. Given the long history and proven track record of MFire, the expansion did not modify the core calculation methods or results. This paper focuses on a general discussion of the MFire program and issues encountered in expansion of the algorithm. An example large network with simulation results is discussed.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation&apos;s leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The United States can expect to meet its future mineral needs in three basic ways: the first is through increased production of primary raw minerals; second by increasing imports from foreign sources; and third by recycling secondary materials and metals that were formerly discarded as waste. The ability to efficiently process lowgrade ores has allowed the Gold Fields Mesquite Mine in Imperial County, CA to expand from a 2.1 Mt/a (2.3 million stpy) rate in 1986 to its present 7.3 Mt/ a (8 million stpy) processing rate. Increased tonnage demands led to the 1989 construction and startup of a dump leach pad to supplement the existing heap leach operation. This resulted in an excellent opportunity to compare the two processes at the same operation. Additional operating costs associated with the crushed ore heaps are justified through enhanced recoveries, even at very low ore grades. Gold Fields&apos; Mesquite Mine is a gold heap leach facility located about 55 km (35 miles) east of Brawley in southeastern California. Five open-pit mines will be developed over the projected life of the property, covering a total area extending to a maximum of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to the east and west, and 2.4 kin (1.5 miles) to the north and south. Mesquite will process 7.3 Mt (8 million st) of ore and produce more than 6.2 t (200 000 oz) of gold in 1990.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada mines, processes and ships crude iron ore, concentrate and pellets from the rich ore bodies of the Labrador Trough area in the extreme north-eastern part of Canada, some five hundred miles from Montreal (see figure 1). There are three main sites of activity. At Schefferville, approximately 12 million tons a year of crude ore (chiefly limonite) are mined, crushed, screened and shipped to Sept-Iles. At Labrador City, 40 million tons of specular hematite are mined annually for processing into 17 million tons of concentrate. Of this, 9 million tons are converted into pellets. All product 1s shipped to Sept-Iles. At Sept-Iles, on the north coast of the St. Lawrence, a six million ton per year concentrator and pellet plant process much of the Scheffervllle ore into high-grade pellets. Also at Sept-Iles are the company&apos;s administration offices stockpiles and shipping facilities. The Terminal facilities can berth and load a 250,000 ton bulk carrier at 19,000 tons per hour.

Seals and build-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are two main underground structures to isolate an area from the active working zones with different purposes. While seals are used to prevent methane gas that seeps from coal seams and blast pressures from a possible detonation of the contained gas, RAs are used to provide a safe haven for miners who are unable to escape their working locations after an accident like an explosion or fire. The recommended BIP RA designs can be similar to seals constructed with steel-reinforced concrete. Both seal and BIP RA are constructed in different locations of the mines for a period of time, exposed to a certain convergence due to stress redistribution which can change their responses during an explosion. In this study, a steel-reinforced concrete wall to be used in such applications is simulated to examine the structural performance during an explosion for a coal mine model with different strata conditions using dynamic analysis by a 3D distinct element method (DEM) code. The main purpose of this study is to reveal any possible effects or trends on the wall deformation with changes in strata conditions by implementing different combinations of roof, seam, and floor material properties. The model is calibrated by the experiment conducted on a steel-reinforced concrete wall by the NIOSH researchers in the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine. The results show that strong adjacent rock and coal units are the least favorable condition for the survival of the wall subjected to a simulated explosion pressure. The results indicate that changes in the roof and seam conditions can have dramatic effects on the deformation characteristics of the wall when compared to the floor conditions. The results of this study might be enlightening for future BIP RA and seal applications.
