Social and political movements that had been gathering momentum over several years continued in 1993 to dramatically affect and inspire uncertainty on the global mineral industry. Privatization of government-controlled mineral industries continued throughout the world, especially in Africa, Asia, Central Eurasia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Western Europe. The reasons for privatization varied among regions and countries, but the trend was universal and was not expected to end soon. Regional trade blocks were being developed and expanded. The European Union (EU), the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) , the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) , and the Latin American Southern Cone Common Market (MERCOSUR) were expected to contribute to reduced internal tariffs and increased minerals trade. Minerals consumption within the politically unstable former Soviet Union (FSU) decreased significantly without a simultaneous cutback in production, while its exports flooded the world's mineral markets. These exports into Western Europe and Japan, still in economic recession, depressed minerals and metals prices worldwide, especially for aluminum, magnesium, nickel, and potash. Increasingly restrictive environmental laws and land-access limitations in Australia, Canada, Western Europe, and the United States tended to discourage mineral resource development. However, the number of undeveloped countries in Latin America and Asia that encouraged exploration and development by revising mining and tax laws and regulations increased, thereby increasing investment opportunities for foreigners.

"SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS1. The investigation shows that the most important beds in Allegany County, from the standpoint of known recoverable reserves are: Lower Bakerstown, Upper Freeport, Upper Bakerstown, Upper Kittraing - less important beds are: Sewickley, Waynesburg, Pittsburgh, and Barton. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 556 million short tons, as of January 1, 1951. Of this total, 304 million short tons is in beds 23 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total eat ted reserves.3. Recoverable reserves of coal have been estimated in beds 28 inches and more thick. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand-loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian region. The weighted average recovery for all beds in Allegany County, as determined by this investigation, is 49.8 percent. This percentage is based on the total thickness of coal (less partings 3/8 inch or more thick) in the bed rather than on the thickness of the coal mined. Based on the weighted average percent recovery for all beds in Allegany County, the recoverable reserves are estimated to be 152 million short tons as of January 1, 1951.4. The Allegany County coals are low-volatile bituminous in rank.5. The Allegany County coals are strongly coking."

"INTRODUCTION The most productive area of the eastern Virginia pyrite belt lies to the north of the village of Mineral., in Louisa County. The largest producers of pyrite ore in the area were the Armenius, Boyd Smith, and the Sulphur mines.The Boyd Smith mine started production about 1890 and operated more or less continuously until 1922, when competition from the Gulf States and Spain closed the pyrite mines in Virginia. There are no reliable records of production or value of minerals produced.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the most effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they take the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, Oliver C. Palston, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The project was under the immediate supervision of Mitchell H. Kline, chief, Raleigh Division, Mining Branch, Bureau of Mines.LOCATIONThe Boyd Smith property is reached from Mineral, Va., by traveling north on State Route 522 about 2-1/2 miles. An unsurfaced road, winding in a northwesterly direction, loads to the Boyd Smith headframe, which is about half a mile from State Route 522 (fig. 1). The tract comprises 181 acres."

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Pittsburgh coalbed was studied in Washington and Green Counties, Pa., and in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. Va., where this coalbed is now being mined at its greatest depth. The coalbed thickness appeared to be structurally controlled; the bed was generally thinner near the axes of anticlines and thicker near the axes of synclines. The overburden isopach shows a similar relationship. Most of the clay veins in coal occur in the synclinal troughs, generally under sandstone roof. Cleat orientations measured in 18 underground mines showed that face cleats are perpendicular to the axial trends of the folds, and the butt cleats are parallel to the axial trends, indicating structural control of the cleat. Measurement and analysis of surface joint orientations provide a method for predicting the cleat orientations of the coalbed, but linears measured from infrared photographs and photoindex sheets helped only to determine regional trends. The results of these investigations provide a geologic framework for rational planning for underground mine development to use the best available technology to cope with methane emissions, coalbed discontinuities, and related ground support problems.

The Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace, Bruceton, Pa., was operated to determine the feasibility of replacing part of the burden coke requirements with solid fuels injected directly into the smelting zone. This report describes preliminary experiments and information resulting from such an interchange. These experiments were made on an all-sinter burden, using two parts sinter to one part fuel. Anthracite fines were injected intermittently into the smelting zone of the furnace by compressed air through auxiliary tuyeres. The interval between injection periods ranged from 5 to 15 minutes. A maximum of 28 percent of the stock column coke bur-den was replaced. This percentage replacement caused furnace malfunction, but the overall percentage of these experiments indicated that 20 to 24 percent of the coke requirements could be replaced in this way. The metallurgical coke consumption was decreased by as much as 377 pounds (25.3 percent) per ton of pig metal produced. Buckwheat anthracite No.4 was used in this experiment; however, such solids as bituminous coal or coke fines also could be used. The frequency as well as the quantity of solid fuel injected has a direct bearing on furnace performance.

An equilibrium study of the system potassium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, carbon dioxide, and water has been conducted with solutions of 20-, 30-, and 40-percent equivalent potassium carboaate concentrations. These equilibrium data cover the operating range of the hot carbonate scrubbing system for removing carbon dioxide from gas mixtures. Such data are necessary to establish the limits of purification and are used to design absorption and regeneration towers. Values of K in the relationship K = (KHCO3)2/(K2CO3)PCO2 were determined for higher temperatures of 70" to 140° C. and greater concentrations, I 20 to 40 percent, than employed by previous investigators. For the 20- and 30-percent concentrations, K is constant at a given temperature; thus, once K has been determined the equilibrium pressure of carbon dioxide can be calculated for any conversion. Variation of & values with changing conversion was observed with the 40-percent solutions, so that equilibrium calculated pressures are less reliable from average K values.

Preventive maintenance practices are listed in the manufacturers' instruction books. In general, equipment that requires frequent and extensive preventive maintenance is generally the most costly. The manpower spent on these frequent trips to remote areas is such that it is usually better to invest in a more costly system which requires little preventive maintenance. The best preventive maintenance for the system is a good installation. 7.2 Preventive Maintenance and Inspections With any system, periodic inspection is required because of the corrosive atmosphere and adverse conditions that exist in underground mines. These inspections can spot potential trouble in the system. Repair or replacement at that time averts the possibility of losing effectiveness of all or part of the system. 7.2.1 Cables Approximately once per month all cables in the communications system should be inspected for kinking, chafing, cracking, wear, stretching, or other signs of physical abuse. Particular attention should be paid to cable glands at the entry or exit points to the various units in the system, where the cable goes around sharp corners, in the vicinity of holding cleats which may be clamping the cable too tightly causing potential damage, and across the areas where the cable is exposed to physical damage from outside sources, such as equipment or falling objects. If a cable is damaged, it should be replaced as soon as possible. It is mandatory that the ground leads and connections to carrier current phones be thoroughly inspected and maintained in good condition, since considerable hazard may exist to the operator or equipment if a ground connection is broken. 7.2.2 Pager Phones The most readily available test set to determine if a pager telephone is operating correctly is the pager phone itself. The following physical check of the system can be performed at any phone station. 7.2.2a Listen Circuit Remove the handset from its cradle and listen to determine if the circuit is functional, as indicated by the presence of noise or conversation on the line. If no noise or voice signals are present at the handset receiver, take the following corrective action: 1. Operate the handset press-to-talk switch several times. Any corrosion on the contacts of this switch may cause a receiver to be temporarily inoperative. Repeated operation may clear the condition. 2. Open the cabinet and see if the battery cables are properly connected and are making firm contact. Check the handset cable and its connections in the cabinet of the pager phone, and see if there is any evidence of a break in the cable, corroded contacts, or poor connections. 3. Remove the handset receiver earpiece by unscrewing it counterclockwise (to the left), and remove the receiver from the socket. Examine the handset cavity; in some units, a patch of cotton batting or floss is used as a barrier to reduce acoustic feedback in the handset. If the cotton patch has absorbed moisture, remove it and replace with a crumpled ball of soft rubber, stuffed just far enough into the handset so it will not touch the receiver or switch terminals. 7.2.2b Page Circuit and Talk Circuit Push the page switch, squeeze the handset press-to-talk switch, and call any other phone. Release the page switch

The four periods of test operation described in Report of Investigations 5219 indicated that planer mining of phosphate rock was feasible. Corrective measures proposed for design deficiencies indicated in test 4 had to be evaluated, however; and, before the attempt to design a prototype production model, it was considered advisable to test the original machine under more severe operating conditions. Planer A was modified, therefore, during the latter half of 1955, and one additional period of experimental operation was conducted in the Anderson mine of the Montana Phosphate Products Company near Garrison, Mont., during the first 4 months of 1956. Test 5 was made in a stope, where the phosphate bed had been offset in a number of places by minor faults. Considerable difficulty was found in negotiating the irregularities caused by these faults, and productionwise the test was not as successful as some of the previous ones. Information obtained, however, was valuable in designing model B.

Test equipment that simulated frictional impacts between coal-cutter bits and mineral inclusions at a coal face during operation of a continuous coal mining machine was used by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratory to study the incendivity of impacts between various rocks, metals, and hard-metal alloys in an explosive mixture of air-7 pct natural gas. Quartzitic sandstone was found to be the most incendive of several rocks tested. Limestone concretions from a coal seam, known locally as "sulfur balls," sparked furiously but were not incendive. Among the metals tested, the type of steel used in commercial coal-cutter tools was the most incendive material tested. A l7-4PH stainless steel was less incendive and appears to be the most promising high-strength steel alloy, reasonably economical, for use in coal-cutter bits. Some hard-metal alloys, primarily titanium and zirconium diboride composites, were also evaluated as possible replacements for the conventional cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide used in the tip of coal-cutter bits. The metal-bonded diborides were generally less inc endive but more brittle than the conventional tungsten carbide. Carbonitride coatings on tool bits were also tested but found to have no advantage. The source of ignition during frictional impact between metal and rock was studied. Immediately after impact, a yellow flash was observed and a smear of metal near its melting point occurred on the rock. This hotspot on the rock, rather than the yellow flash or sparks or metal fragments, was observed to be the cause of the ignition.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory drillability studies on nine rock types using two mining-type percussive drills. Percussive-bit action was simulated by dropping a known weight on a rock sample to obtain a coefficient of rock strength for each rock drilled. While no single physical property of a rock is completely satisfactory as a predictor of penetration rate, coefficient of rock strength showed a better correlation with penetration rate than did other physical properties. Results also indicate that over the range of energies investigated, energy per unit volume in a given rock is independent of blow energy. A drillability index for the percussive system is proposed that utilizes the coefficient of rock strength test to determine energy per unit volume for a given rock which, along with the work rate of a given drill and the bit diameter, is used to predict the penetration rate as shown in the following equation: [R = 4P pD2 E, where R = penetration rate, in/min, P = work rate, in lb/min, D = bit diameter, in, and Ev = energy required to produce a given volume of rock, in lb/in3.] Laboratory tests indicate this method's potential as a simple and reasonably accurate method of predicting penetration rates with any percussive drill and bit combination.

"Fire fighting in metal mines under the best of conditions is a dangerous, a slow, and a difficult task. Certain gases generated from combustible material burning in restricted areas are poisonous, even in small quantities, and can not be breathed without serious and often fatal results. In addition to poisonous gases, smoke is given off which obscures the vision of the fire fighter and frequently prevents him from gaining access to the fire area. Many fire-fighting crews have had to turn back because their vision was so impaired by the dense smoke that the fire area could not be located and there was danger of them becoming lost in the mine.In mines having mechanically controlled ventilation - that is, mines not dependent entirely upon natural air currents - the gas and smoke can be forced ahead of the fire-fighting crews, thereby facilitating exploration of the mine and saving the time, energy and oxygen of the mine rescue apparatus crews.Where currents of fresh air can be circulated up to points near the fire without danger of seriously spreading the fire, fresh air bases can be established in the immediate vicinity, and a more intelligent campaign for fighting or controlling the fire can be mapped out.Positive air currents through forced ventilation may also result in saving the lives of miners who otherwise might have been trapped in smoke and poisonous gases.It is generally known that comparatively few metal mines have attempted to regulate or control air currents, with the result that when a fire occurs underground, the normal ventilation may be reversed, short circuited, or the air current may be in one direction one minute and in the opposite direction the next; or, generally speaking, the ventilation can not be depended upon, and smoke and poisonous gases may accumulate in any part of the mine or ""drift"" on the fire-fighters or on the miners endeavoring to escape."

This report describes bench-scale studies and pilot-plant development of the Bureau of Mines process for roasting iron ores with a ferrous scrap reductant, such as discarded automobile hulks, to yield artificial magnetite. Quality magnetic concentrates containing about 66 percent iron and 6 percent silica with iron recoveries of over 90 percent were obtained after roasting fine-grained oxidized or nonmagnetic taconite with unburned, sheared automobile hulks in a rotary kiln. The relatively complete oxidation of the lighter gage metal in the automobile during roasting resulted in a metallic byproduct consisting of the unconsumed heavier gage metal scrap. This residual or tailored scrap is potentially useful as heavy melting stock and has more value than the original automobile hulk.

A tube-wall reactor with a Raney nickel catalyst deposited on the outer wall of the tube by flame spraying is effective in the practically complete conversion of 3H2+1CO synthesis gas to a high-Btu gas (methane) at an hourly space velocity of 7,000 volumes of gas (NTP) per hour per volume of annular volume. Partially reacted synthesis gas containing an appreciable amount of methane can also be treated in this reactor to increase the heating value to over 900 Btu per cubic foot. Excellent heat removal through the metal wall to a coolant and temperature control were obtained. The heat transfer co-efficient from the catalyst to the coolant was about 275 Btu per hour per square foot per ° F. Synthesis tests were conducted with tubes 1.2 inches in ad by 6 inches long, and 1.3 inches in od by 36 inches long. When operating at a synthesis gas rate of 100 to 120 scfh per square foot of catalyst-coated tube, catalyst life was long enough to realize a catalyst cost for the raw Raney nickel alloy of about 0.3 cent per 1,000 cubic feet of pipeline gas (900 to 950 Btu per scf). Gas recycling at ratios of 1:1 to 3:1 was effective in increasing conversion and in extending the life of the catalyst to about 16 weeks. In cost and in operating characteristics the tube-wall reactor compares favorably with the fluidized-bed and hot-gas-recycle reactor systems for the synthesis of high-Btu gas from H2+CO.

"INTRODUCTION The Copper King or Red River copper mine was examined on December 13, 1942, by the Bureau of Mines at the request of Richard Kelly of Santa Fe, N. Mex. The examination was made to determine whether the expenditure of funds for rehabilitation work necessary to make the workings accessible for examination would be warranted.As a favorable report was made, the workings of the Copper King mine were opened and sampled under the direction of the author. The portal of the Copper King adit was opened first. Considerable rehabilitation was necessary in the first 50 feet of the workings, but the remainder of the drifts and crosscuts were sufficiently open to permit surveying and sampling.An attempt was made to open the Waterbury atilt, which was reported to be about 30 feet east of the Copper King portal, and to crosscut the ore body nearly to its southern border. However, slide rock and mine dumps had completely obscured the portal of this adit, and no opening into it could be found or made.Work on the project was started on September 27 and vas completed on November 6, 1943."

Thick coal seams are common in the Western United States, Many seams are over 50 it thick (some are over 200 ft thick) and are too deep to extract using surface methods. Currently, such deposits are developed using standard "eastern" mining methods which only extract a few feet of total seam thickness, often rendering the remaining coal unminable with current technology. Novel methods that increase thick-seam recovery have been developed and are currently being used in Europe. These methods--high-face single-pass and multislice longwall, longwall caving, and hydraulic mining--have great potential for use in the United States. Successful use of these methods is an objective of the Bureau of Mines. Their use requires, among other things, a full evaluation of geologic features common to thick coals. The objective of this report is to present and summarize those features that will affect the introduction of the methods into thick-seam mines in the Western United States. The geologic elements delineated are three-dimensional configuration of the seam, cleat development, joints and fractures, roof and floor lithology, and faulting.

Although the Stamler feeder/breaker has been used for coal crushing in underground mines for many years, it has only recently been applied to other crushing operations. Two companies presently using Stamler feeder/breakers for rock crushing were contacted regarding their experiences with the units in actual field use. In both cases information was obtained directly from the individuals responsible for field operation and maintenance of the units. White Pine Copper Co. has been using Stamler feeder/breakers for over two years to crush copper ore. They now have fourteen 450-ton-per-hour units on line. The ore has a compressive strength of from 18,000 to 28,000 psi and is extremely abrasive. Maintenance is performed on a tonnage basis. The breaker shaft is replaced every 250,000 tons (requiring about 4 hrs) and picks are replaced about every 1500 tons by the operator (requiring about 2 min per pick). Very little unscheduled maintenance has been required. Crushing costs are fairly high (estimated at 13 to 15t per ton including maintenance and operation) because of tale extreme abrasiveness of the material. A new Stamler feeder/breaker with Ultramet wear surfaces was put or line in June 1976. Ultramet was found to increase the life of belt transfer station surfaces by up to 400 percent and it is hoped that it will do the same for the feeder/breaker. At this time it is still too early to evaluate the performance of the Ultramet unit. If it does improve abrasion resistance, crushing costs could be greatly reduced. White Pine is very pleased with the units and the service provided by Stamler.

The Northwest experiment station of the Federal Bureau of Mines , at Seattle , Wash . , was established in December , 1916 , and is one of 13 mining experiment stations maintained by Act of Congress , under the direction of the bureau , in the various sections of the country . Under the terms of the organic Act (March 3 , 1915 ) , the province and duty of these experiment stations is to cake investigations and disseminate information with a view to decreasing waste and improving the efficiency in the production , treatment , and utilization of mineral substances . The investigations carried on at the Northwest experiment station attempt to cover the needs of the mineral industry of the States of the Pacific Northwest and of the coastal regions of Alaska . The most in ortant needs of this district are for work on coal washing , electrometallurgy , and ceramics . The electrometallurgical investigations are not necessarily limited to the Problems of the Northwest , but may be of general application . Problems other than those specified above are referred to other stations of the Bureau that specialize on the particular type of investigation required . The Northwest station closely cooperates with the State of Washington through the University of Washington and with the State of Oregon through the Oregon Bureau of Mines and Geology . The University of Washington at Seattle has donated the use of an entire building , which houses the station's administrative offices and chemical laboratory , and parts of two other buildings which are usea in conducting the experimental avestigations . Twenty-five thousand dollars is expended annually by the Federal Government , while the State of Washington each biennium appropriates $ 20,000 , and the State of Oregon from time to time appropriates various amounts for the conduct of work along cooperative lines . Also , the station cooperates with private organizations tht have problems similar to those in which the station is interested . For example , the Washington Electrochemical Co. is cooperating in the electrometallurgical research, and furnishes part of the supplies and technical assistance required .

A superintendent is one who has the oversight and charge of some organiza- tion or enterprise, with porer of direction. The superintendent of a coal mine is the official who is in general charge of conducting the operation of the nine for the purpose of producing coal; he is accountable to his superiors for all matters that relate to the cost of production and safety in operation, ed under him are all the underground officials and other personnel making up the mine organization. The responsibility of the superintendent covers all the principal phases of mining, purchases of materials, issuance of supplies, accounting, and upkeep of the property and equipriont. In a broad sense, the superintendent must view his job as embraced under four gneral heads: (1) Construction, (2) instruction, (3) supervision; and (4) discipline. The degree of efficiency with which each of these phases of his work is conducted is a measure of the safety factor which the superintendent injects into his job. Injury to workmen and damage to property may be due to neglect of one of these general headings; as for example in the collapse of a scaffold there has been faulty construction which may be found upon investigation to have been the result of faulty instruction or lack of instruction. It may be that the condition of the scaffold was not ascertained in advance of its collapse through faulty supervision, or the discipline of the workmen had been neglected.

An explosion occurred in a high-pressure compressed-air line in October, 1930, at an Arizona copper mine. The explosion was unusual, and nothing had teor. noted by the plant operators to indicate the possibility of such an occurrence. It is necessar The air is The mining company uses compressed-air locomotives to haul about 4,500 tons of ore per day from the stopos to the pockets at two hoisting shafts. The ore cars hold five tons each, and are pulled in trains of 30 cars. to charge the locomotive with compressed air at both ends of the trip. conveyed from the compressors at the surface to the distributing points unier roun in special high-pressure four inch steel pipe that was tested to withstand 2500 pounds per square inch before being installed. The air is delivered to the loco- motives at a pressure of 1000 pounds per square inch. There are no receivers in the system. The air for running the locomotives is compressed by one three-stage and two four-stage compressors which have capacities of 600 and 300 cubic feet per minute, respectively. These machines are operated by electric power, and are in an end of the main compressor building in which air is compressed to supply the air drills in the mine. Whenever the demand decreases, as at the noon hour, one or more of the Compressors are shut down. On this particular occasion, at the end of the noon hour, one of the operators was approaching the high-pressure compressors to start the two smaller machines that were not running, when the explosion took place under the floor a few fost ahead of him. The man was mocked down and received some superficial cuts and bruises, but was not seriously injured. The floor was torn , the side of the building blown out, and holes imo cited in the roof some twenty feet above. The explosion was immediately followed by a fire which was quickly put out by the plant operators with hand fire extinguishers. At the time of the explosion the 600 cubic foot compressor was running alone, and the pressure in the system at the machine registered 1040 pounds por square inch. On examination it was found that two 6-fout sections of pipe, about tan feet apart, were completely ruptured into twisted fragments; the rest of the pipe line, apparently, was not injured. The destroyed sections were in that part of the pipe near the large compressor and above the connection from the two smaller machines. It is not definitely mom what caused the explosion. Explosions in other compressed-air systems have taken place, and, although of rare occurrence, have caused loss of life. Such explosions are not confined to high-pressure installations and several have occurred at plants compressing air te one hundred pounds per square inch, or less. plosions of this nature are not to be confused with the rupturing of compressor cylinders from excessive air pressure caused by the discharge valve being closed.

To be successful , human exertion employed for the creation of value requires power and heat ; the ability to produce concentrated power in great quantities has resulted in the relatively recent industrial development that is so profoundly affecting the world . In our commercial history , we have advanced through several stages in the selection of the most suitable fuels , continuously striving to increase the flexibility and range of energy- transmission . The easy distribution of light , power and heat is the leading factor in the decentralization of industry which promises to correct some of the serious evils that have followed in the footsteps of our commercial development . The distribution of fuel in quantity in so convenient a form and with such an attractive reliability- factor as can be had with gas , meets the modern conception of efficient service . Natural gas has been used in this country for more than a century, but recently it has attained a prominence far in excess of anything known in its earlier history. We may consider that we are now getting into our real stride in the utilization of our natural- gas resources . : In a country like the United States , wherein we are accustomed to mammoth achievements , we may be inclined to accept casually the noteworthy technical and economic advances which have resulted in the expansion of natural- gas distribution . About three years ago , the transmission of natural gas a distance of more than 250 miles from its source was first accomplished , and this was really a noteworthy engineering feat . Today , this useful commodity is being transported twice that distance , and lines are being laid which will carry gas more than 900 miles from the points of occurrence . Let us not take such outstanding improvements too much as a matter of course ; the industry should be congratulated on its long steps forward .
