Reduce mine worker dust exposure by capturing airborne coal and quartz dust generated by a continuous mining machine. Approach Install a water-powered scrubber system operating at 1,000 psi on the side of a continuous miner boom. Dusty air under the boom is drawn through the scrubber, and cleaned air is discharged into the face return. How It Works Most coal mines use exhaust face ventilation to send fresh air over the miner operator, and contaminated air behind the line curtain to the section return. The difficulty with exhaust face ventilation is that the line curtain should be within 10 feet of the face for maximum effectiveness. If the line curtain is not extended properly, or water sprays for dust control are poorly installed, dust rolls back toward the operator. A scrubber mounted on the mining machine will effectively reduce this dust rollback and the dust in the return airstream.

Demand for arsenic exceeded supply, and major domestic and foreign producers allocated available supplies to customers for the fourth consecutive year. Major demand for arsenic was about evenly divided between industrial chemicals and agricultural chemicals. Legislation and Government Programs.-Effective April 1, 1981, taxes were collected from companies producing and importing 42 chemicals and petroleum products designated as hazardous, The revenue was used to begin funding of the 5-year, $1.6 billion "superfund" being established under Public Law 96-510, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, designed to help clean up spills of hazardous substances throughout the United States. As hazardous chemicals, arsenic metal and arsenic trioxide were taxed at the rate of $4.45 and $3.41 per short ton, respectively.

ASARCO Incorporated, the only domestic arsenic producer, terminated copper-smelting operations and the associated recovery of byproduct arsenic trioxide at Tacoma, W A. in 1985. It still shipped small quantities of trioxide from its remaining stocks in 1987. Imports for consumption of arsenic trioxide were slightly higher than in 1986. Domestic Data Coverage.-Shipments of small amounts of arsenic trioxide from remaining stocks by Asarco were reported voluntarily to the Bureau of Mines.

The Bureau of Mines monitored a rock-burst-prone pillar in a metallic ore vein, up to and through failure, to measure its reactions to increasing loads, as it was mined. Three parameters were monitored: the stress changes at chosen points within the pillar, the displacement characteristics of the drift above the pillar, and the micro-seismic activity in and around the pillar. In descending order of effectiveness, the microseismic technique, vibrating wire stress measurements, and displacement measurements reflected the pillar reactions, and all showed good correlation to one another. A major rock burst in the pillar, which destroyed about 100 feet of drift above the pillar, occurred at the end of this study. This burst was preceded by a large anomaly in the microseismic activity in the failure area.

New mineral activity focused on increased petroleum exploration activities, while the established construction-oriented minerals sector operated without substantial change from previous years. After showing a 1 % real growth in the $154 million II gross domestic product (GDP) for 1983, preliminary estimates for 1984 indicated that the same growth pattern prevailed. The negative trade balance at midyear had worsened over the negative balance for the same period in 1983. An upward trend in import costs partly reflected the impact of Mexican inflation, which made that country's goods more ex-pensive and led to increased imports from North America and Europe. On the other hand, by midyear, the reexport trade with Mexico indicated an upward climb from the 1988 low of $12.7 million.

"In connection with the proposed use of Cordeau-Bickford to fire L.O.X. (liquid oxygen explosives) in well drill holes, the question has arisen as to the effect of very low temperatures on (1) the rate of detonation of Cordeau-Bickford; (2) the sensitiveness to detonation of its TNT filling; and (3) the lead covering of Cordeau-Bickford.The Cordeau-Bickford used in this investigation was the standard 6 mm. size, such as is regularly used in blasting, and was manufactured and furnished by the Ensign-Bickford Company, Simsbury, Conn. All pieces tested were taken from rolls, all of which were from the same melted batch of TNT in order that all the pieces tested might be as nearly identical as possible.Different portions of this Cordeau-Bickford were tested plain (not countered), countered, and double countered. The countering and double countering was carried out by the manufacturer prior to shipment.The determination of the temperature at the instant of making a test was accomplished by the use of a Leeds and Northrup potentiometer and copper constantan thermocouples. Each couple was made from No. 28 B & S gage wire with short junctions. One junction was inserted in a hole drilled by a No. 60 drill through one lead wall of the Cordeau-Bickford to approximately the opposite wall, so that this junction was in the center of the TNT filling while the other junction was immersed in ice water. The potentiometer readings in millivolts were converted to °C. from the calibration curve of the thermocouple wire,"

Provide an operator cab to assure protection, comfortable use of controls, and good visibility. Approach A cab which raises and lowers by pivoting about d horizontal axis was Installed on two S&S cleanup tractors and tested in two underground working mines. How It Works Hydraulic cylinders actuated by a lever inside the cab cause the cab to pivot about a horizontal axis. This action raises or lowers the cab height. The total cab excursion is 14 inches. A release valve in the hydraulic system allows the cab to lower automatically if struck by a roof load or overhead obstruction. The pivoting action of the cab is engineered so that the operator maintains comfortable use of all controls at all cab heights. The movement is such that the angular relationship of the operator's ankles With the tram and brake foot controls IS consistently within 90 to 100 degrees. Figure 1 outlines the approximate position of the operator at three cab elevations.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Congress are presently considering several approaches aimed at reducing the amount of lead in the environment and society's exposure to lead. One approach is to tax domestic primary lead production or consumption. Objective To assist the Congress and the EPA in their decisionmaking, a study was initiated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which assesses the minerals related implications of a tax on U.S. primary lead production and primary lead imports. This investigation analyzes the impacts of a primary lead lax on: (1) domestic primary lead production, (2) domestic lead coproduct and byproduct production (including bismuth, cadmium, germanium, indium, silver, and zinc production), (3) domestic secondary lead production, (4) lead imports, (5) domestic lead recycling activity, and (6) the U.S. lead price. Study Findings Domestic Primary Lead and Primary Lead Coproduct and Byproduct Production. A quantitative analysis based on the application of the Bureau's Supply Availability System (SAM) has been conducted to determine the impacts on domestic primary lead and primary lead coproduct and byproduct production from domestic lead source material for a range of taxes.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study of the explosibility of various metals and other elemental dusts, with a focus on the experimental explosion temperatures. The data are useful for understanding the basics of dust cloud combustion, as well as for evaluating explosion hazards in the minerals and metals processing industries. The dusts studied included boron, carbon, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, sulfur, titanium, chromium, iron, nickel, copper, zinc, niobium, molybdenum, tin, hafnium, tantalum, tungsten, and lead. The dusts were chosen to cover a wide range of physical properties-from the more volatile materials such as magnesium, aluminum, sulfur, and zinc to the highly "refractory" elements such as carbon, niobium, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten. These flammability studies were conducted in a 20-L chamber, using strong pyrotechnic ignitors. A unique multiwavelength infrared pyrometer was used to measure the temperatures. For the elemental dusts studied, all ignited and burned as air-dispersed dust clouds except for nickel, copper, molybdenum, and lead. The measured maximum explosion temperatures ranged from "-1550K for tin and tungsten powders to "-2800K for aluminum, magnesium, and titanium powders. The measured temperatures are compared to the calculated, adiabatic flame temperatures.

Although haulage truck collisions account for only a small percentage of haulage accidents, the likelihood of severe injury, or even death is very high when such a collision does occur. Most rear-end collisions also result in considerable equipment damage, creating a need for expensive repairs. To improve collision protection, some southwestern surface mines have, for several years, been fabricating and using extended bumpers. In cooperation with these mines, the Bureau of Mines has worked to improve this technology by evaluating the structural requiremnts of extended bumpers. How Extended Bumpers Help The Bureau found that when one large rear-dump haulage truck collides with the rear of another an extended bumper protects the driver of the vehicle that is struck by dissipating the impact energy into the rear tires and pushing the whole vehicle forward. An extended bumper also prevents the box on the truck that is hit from penetrating the cab of the other truck-a typical and serious collision hazard. A further advantage derives from the wide design of the extended bumper which helps prevent damage to truck ladders, thereby minimizing any entry or exit problems. Extended bumpers also provide safe work platforms at the front of large haulage vehicles.

A new phone system was developed that provides eight full duplex communications channels over a single twisted shielded phone line, with no central switching station or line amplifiers. This system greatly simplifies installation and maintenance over that required with conventional switching systems. The system is based on microprocessor technology and digital frequency synthesis. Frequency division multiplexing is used over a bandwidth of approximately 300 kHz, and a baseband voice channel (compatible with conventional pager phones) is provided as a backup to assure communication if the multiplex features fail. Multiplex operations are controlled over a 30-kHz digital channel. The system is designed to operate with up to 16 km (10 miles) of cable plant and a maximum phone separation of 8 km (5 miles). The digital techniques permit a limited amount of monitoring and control capability to each phone. This consists of two pair of contact inputs or outputs, to be used as desired. These "flags" may be read or controlled by a dispatcher's phone.

Determine what diameter piping is necessary to obtain sufficient water flow to spray nozzles used for dust suppression. Approach A simplified, diagrammatic method of calculating the flow of water through a proposed system consisting of a supply line and two banks of spray nuzzles is outlined. How It Works The pressure versus flowrate of the supply at the tapping point must be known or measured. The supply curve of typical city water at a 1 ¼ -inch pipe outlet is shown by the lowest curve in Figure 1. A supply curve for a typical pump fed from an open sump is shown by the middle curve. The combination of these, the supply curve of a pump fed by the city water supply is shown by adding the lower two curves to get the upper curve. A pump supply curve showing flowrate versus pressure is usually supplied by the manufacturer. The water supply line flow curve can be determined by measuring the time required to fill a 55 gallon barrel at various valve settings to determine flow, and by measuring corresponding pressures at the valve with a gauge.

Few studies have specifically measured and documented the large-scale loading behavior and durability of ventilation stoppings to mining induced movements, particularly from longwalls. Ventilation stoppings are more commonly the concern of ventilation engineers, and ventilation stopping response to ground movement has only been documented in an incidental manner. This paper presents the investigations of underground measurements that have been conducted to determine the loading response of stoppings constructed from lightweight aggregate concrete masonry units (CMU). These investigations have produced some interesting results that may prove beneficial, not only for developing and assessing alternative stopping construction techniques, but also for designing and selecting standard construction methods for use in varying mining conditions. For instance, the interface friction that results from wedging a CMU stopping during construction plays a substantial role in its ability to resist both lateral and vertical loads. Although they are not intended for ground support, the study showed that block stoppings can resist vertical loads of at least 2,700 to 3,000 kN. Asymmetric loading of a stopping may result in localized failure of blocks within a stopping, which, depending on the severity, can be a precursor of impending stopping failure. In addition to measurement results and implications, the paper will also present details of field measurement methods used to assess stopping response. Stopping stiffness and material strength characteristics will also be presented.

The Bureau of Mines examined explosion development in a closed spherical vessel, mathematically correlating flame travel, pressure, and time with parameters defining the reaction. The model assumes that burnt and unburnt zones are separated by a thin, radially moving flame front. Isothermal and adiabatic systems are considered. Correlation with gas and dust explosion data is better for the adiabatic system, but the isothermal development is simpler and in reasonably good agreement. Interpretation of the explosion phenomena is facilitated by expressing the rate of mole change in the flame front in terms of elementary parameters. This expression is developed by examining the components of spatial-flame velocity.

"There has been much writing and argument on the subject of giving bonuses to miners, quarrymen, metallurgical and chemical workers, and others as a stimulus for safe work and for work safely done. Theoretically, everyone should be careful and should not need monetary or any other type of encouragement for the prevention of accidents; as a. fact, few people are careful, and this is primarily the reason way many if not most accidents occur. A bonus, however, is not simply money given away by an employer; it must be earned, so to speak, before it becomes due; in other words, if the standard established is not reached, no bonus is paid, and in many cases some disciplinary action is taken.The United States Bureau of Mines Is asked from time to time for suggestions for rewards to mine workers who have a good attitude toward working safely or who need some stimulus to cause them to make greater or more earnest efforts toward safety for themselves and their co-workers. A recent inquiry prompted the collection of data on some safety bonus systems from reports of this bureau's field engineers and others, and some of these Now given. Bonus practice at both coal and metal mines is included because a system used at metal mines is generally adaptable to coal mines; in fact, in numerous cases, bonus systems recently started at some coal mines are based on systems in vogue and giving satisfaction some metal mines; in-some instances, also, metal mines have been able to get good suggestions from coal mines or from the cement or petroleum industries. it .should be understood that a bonus, even as applied to the encouragement of safety, does not necessarily mean payment of money; in fact, some successful bonus systems have in them no direct money exchange; hence, the bonus as treated in this paper is that defined as ""Something given in addition to what is ordinarily received by, or strictly due to, the recipient.""Acknowledgment is given here to members of the safety division of the Bureau of Mines who sent in some of the information here presented; to the Engineering and Mining Journal and Mining Congress Journal, from which some items were abstracted; to various mining officials who gave data in one form or another; and to M. von Bernewitz, of the United. The heats of solution of erbium chloride in water and in hydrochloric acid and of erbium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined. The results reveal a discrepancy of 10.5 kcal. per gram-atom between the heats of combustion and solution of erbium reported in the literature, the heat of combustion being more negative. The heat of combustion of erbium t4)4 and its heat of solution in hydrochloric acid (1, 18) have been reported in the literature. The heat of solution of erbium chloride was determined in two studies (2, 19). The present work was undertaken to check the reported heats of solution of erbium chloride and to determine the heat of solution of erbium oxide in hydrochloric acid. The latter quantity permits the heats of combustion and solution of erbium to be compared for mutual consistency. It was also desired to determine the degree of similarity between the thermochemistry of yttrium and erbium.

THERE are two recognized methods of recording the state of the metallurgical art. One involves delineation of individual advances reported in the literature. This approach is used effectively in the excellent annual reviews published by some of the leading technical journals and in the technology sections of the individual commodity chapters in this volume. In an effort to more clearly indicate the current trend of metallurgical research and development, the authors of this chapter chose the method of discussing generally selected items of interest brought to their attention during 1959. Since technology cannot be confined by dates on a calendar, most of the items mentioned have been in the process of development for several years. No attempt was made to identify the sources of information used here. Material was drawn from many sources : Nonconfidential correspondence and conversations with authorities of the metallurgical fraternity, papers delivered at technical meetings, and articles noted in the technical press, including particularly Engineering and Mining Journal, Metal Progress, Journal of Metals, Mining Engineering, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical and Engineering News, Chemical Week, Materials in Design Engineering, Review of Metal Literature, the Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Bulletin, the Mining Journal (British), and the Journal of the Institute of Metals (British).

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the effectiveness of long holes in degasifying an area of the Upper Split of the Lower Sunnyside coalbed at Kaiser Steel CO.'s Sunnyside No. 1 mine. These holes were drilled from the two outside entries of a section that was closed to mining because of excessive methane emissions. Two holes drilled to 430 and 450 feet produced initial gas flows of 160,000 and 127,000 cfd, respectively. Sixteen days after the completion of the second hole, the total gas production declined to just over 144,000 cfd. In 9 months of degasification, over 35 MMcf of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the coalbed. The combined gas flows declined to 106,000 cfd in the 9-month period. The two holes have reduced face emissions by about 40 pct.

This chapter includes tables for 1981 that were not available in time for publication of the 1981 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1982. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1982 was estimated at about $20 billion, a decrease of $5 billion compared with that of 1981. The decline in value is the first since 1971 and is the largest percentage drop since 1938. Although the domestic mining industry continued to be troubled by difficulties in attracting capital and by import competition from countries with lower overall production costs, the principal cause of the decline was sharply decreased demand brought on by the worldwide economic slowdown. Metal commodities were impacted most severely with only 4 of 21 metals registering production value gains and only 3 of 21 showing production quantity increases. Overall metal production value decreased 37% from that of 1981, a reflection of the domestic slowdown in the automobile and construction industries, which are major metal users, Overall production value of nonmetals decreased 12% compared with that of 1981, with only 14 out of 44 nonmetals showing increases. Nonmetal production quantities increased over 1981 for only 6 of the 44 nonmetals.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of unsupported liquid emulsion membranes (LEM's) for the extraction of copper from relatively dilute aqueous solutions (=0.3 and 2.5 g/L Cu), The performance characteristics of the three main unit operations of an LEM circuit (emulsion generation, metal extraction, and emulsion breaking) were assessed in laboratory-scale batch tests. In single-stage extraction tests using 2.5-g/L Cu feed solution, emulsion membranes extracted up to 94 pct of the copper from solutions without pH adjustment and 99.7 pct when the pH was maintained at about 2.5. Simulated two-stage crosscurrent and countercurrent circuits extracted all but 3 and 4 ppm of the original copper content, respectively. Extraction data from solutions containing mixtures of metals indicated a strong preference for Cu2+ extraction when oxime-type extractants were used in the LEM; however, some coextraction of Fe 3+ and Zn2+ was experienced. An electrostatic coalescer was used to break the copper-loaded emulsions for separation of the component phases. Up to 96 pct of the contained stripping solution (internal solution) containing the extracted copper was separated from the organic phase of the emulsion membrane. The recovered organic phase was recycled without apparent problems.
