The Ely mine, which at one time was the largest producer of copper in the United States, has been idle for the past 30 years. A remarkably continuous ore shoot probably averaging 100 feet wide and 19 feet thick was mined on about a 25° slope for 3,400 feet on the incline. The ore was massive sulfides containing chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. The estimated production of the Ely mine is 400,000 tons of ore averaging 3.3 percent copper. Because of the critical position of copper during the recent war, a search for extensions and recurrences of parallel ore shoots at the Ely deposit seemed warranted. The Bureau of Mines surveyed selected areas by geophysical methods, diamond-drilled nine holes, and sampled mine dumps during its investigations, which began in 1942 and terminated in 1946. The diamond drilling totaled 5,229 feet. The logs of the holes include chemical analyses of mineralized sections.

This paper, which describes the mining methods of the Potash Co. of America in Eddy County, N. Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Branch, of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices and methods in various mining districts of the United States. 4, T. The mine and plant of Potash Co. of America are situated in sec. 20 S., R.. 30, E.,. N. M. P. M., about 22 miles by paved road northeast of Carlsbad (fig. 1). A spur line of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad also connects the mine with Carlsbad.

This paper describing the mining and preparation of sand and gravel for a number of special markets by the East Texas Gravel Co., Dallas, Tex., is one of a series being prepared on the subject by the United States Bureau of Mines. These articles are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole, but on the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

A simple, portable helium analyzer was developed primarily for field use. Its utility lies in making preliminary surveys before exact analyses are required. The analyzer is based upon chromatographic principles; that is, separation of gas mixtures resulting from variable retention times of the components with respect to a separation medium (column-packing material). It uses thermistors for sensing detectors, a dry battery as source of power, and a micro-ammeter for indicating helium concentration. The absolute accuracy of the instrument depends upon the recency and care with which the instrument is calibrated with a standard gas. The unknown gas should be analyzed immediately after calibration, and another calibration should be made before another unknown sample is analyzed. The instrument is simple to operate, requiring approximately 15 minutes, after calibration, to determine the helium content of a natural gas sample. Although developed primarily for helium determination, the analyzer possibly can be used for other analyses that can be performed at ambient temperatures.

Experimental determinations were made of the heats of formation at 298.15 ° K of cuprous ferrite and cupric ferrite ; the heat capacity of cuprous ferrite was measured over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298 ° K and the entropy at 298.15 ° K was evaluated ; the heat contents of cuprous ferrite and cupric ferrite above 298.15 ° K were measured to 1,500 ° K and 1,100 ° K , respectively . These thermodynamic values were combined with other pertinent data to obtain heat and free energy of formation values at high temperatures . The stability of the two ferrites with respect to their constituent oxides is discussed . Thermodynamic values are included for the decomposition of cupric ferrite to form cuprous ferrite , magnetite , and oxygen .

This marks the 100th year that the aggregate industry has been served by a national association. Of all the accomplishments this longstanding relationship has achieved, there is probably none greater than the progress made, in worker safety. Perhaps the best way to measure this success is to examine injury trends in the aggregate miner population. For example, in the first half of the 20th [ ] century, 16 quarry mining disasters (a "disaster" is an incident with five or more fatalities) claimed 157 miners between 1909 and 1952. The largest of these was the disaster at the Sandts Eddy Limestone Quarry near Allentown, Pa., on March 26, 1942, where 31 miners died of asphyxiation by fumes/explosion. Thankfully, no mining disasters have occurred in the aggregate industry since 1952. It is these kinds of information that help us characterize improvements in aggregate worker safety over the last 100 years.

Cancrinite is one eonstituentof "red muds," a high-volume waste product of alumina production by the Bayer process. The Bureau of Mines determined the thermochemical properties of cancrinite as part of a program to provide such data for minerals of industrial importance. Cancrinite [Na7.68(A16Si6024)(N03)1.68 (H2O)4.1] was synthesized by reacting aluminum silicate gel with a solution of NaOH and NaN03, and the composition was determined by chemical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The heat of solution was determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K, ?Hf°298, is ?Hf°298 = -3,487.97 ±2.6 kcal/mol, and the standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides and NaN03, ?H°298, is ?H°298 = -215.20 ±l.8 kcal/mol.

Increase the productivity of domestic mining operations by improving the performance of rock drilling systems. Approach Investigate the use of chemical solutions at zero surface charge concentrations as drilling fluid additives to enhance penetration rates and extend bit life. Background Bureau researchers have investigated the use of chemical additives to enhance drilling performance and have found that the most efficient drilling occurred when the drilling fluid was able to maintain a zero surface charge (ZSC) on the rock surface. Laboratory drilling studies using 5/8-inch diameter diamond-impregnated coring bits on rock types such as quartzite, granite, taconite, and marble. Cationic compounds were used as the surface charge neutralizing additives during these tests. The drilling studies demonstrated enhanced drilling performance, however, only at the singular additive concentration that produced the ZSC condition. Bureau researchers made a breakthrough when they found that polyethylene oxide, although a nonionic polymer, was able to maintain the ZSC condition over a wide range of concentrations. Success using polyethylene oxide as the drilling fluid additive during subsequent laboratory tests prompted testing under field conditions.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated synthetic fluorspar as a substitute for natural fluorspar flux in basic cupola ironmaking. The synthetic fluor-spars tested were prepared from waste fluosilicic acid generated during the processing of fluorapatite ore. The cupola trials showed the synthetic products to be the equivalent of natural fluorspar from an operational standpoint. However, wet scrubber sampling showed that substantial losses of volatilized fluorine occurred from the cupola during operation. The losses during synthetic fluorspar trials considerably exceeded those from natural fluorspar trials. Laboratory viscosity testing, using a high-temperature rotational viscometer, confirmed this finding and indicated that fluorspar volatility in slags is related to slag basicity. Synthetic fluorspar is accordingly recommended more for highly basic cupola operation (>1.3 basicity) than for neutral or acid operation, because of the increased potential for pollution and baghouse filter detezioration"

The Southern Appalachian coal field extends southward across Tennessee in a belt about 50 miles wide between the eastern and middle sections of the State. The earliest record of the production of coal in Tennessee is for 1840, and the first inspection laws were passed in 1881. In 1887, a second act of the legislature created the office of Chief Inspector, but little was done until 1891 when a new act was passed giving to the Department of Mines added duties and powers. Since that time, except for the years 1915 to 1918, com¬ prehensive annual reports have been published. Data for the tables given in this paper are taken from these annual reports, from those of the Southern Appalachian Coal Operators' Association, and from the publications of the United States Bureau of Mines, which has main¬ tained a station at Jellico, Tenn., since 1911. Complete figures for 1930 are not available yet and they are not included in the averages. The State Department of Mines, the operating companies, and the United States Bureau of Mines cooperate in accident-prevention work. It is the purpose of this report to present in uniform tables the available statistics in regard to fatal accidents in Tennessee and in the coal mines of the United States, in order that the progress in mine safety in Tennessee may be compared with that of the country as a whole, and the present period may be compared with various periods of the past, to indicate the main points of attack in the reduction of accidents.

At some coal mines, methane gas is released during raise drilling. At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, the Bureau of Mines conducted ventilation surveys at different raise drill sites to assess various methods of reducing methane concentration. The resulting data indicate that raise drill shaft cavities are ventilated by air compressors, vacuum pumps, auxiliary blower fans, and free intake air from the surface. The compressors, pumps, and fans operate simultaneously or separately. At the bottom of the shaft cavities, ventilation is controlled by regulators and airlocks. Methane is monitored, measured, and periodically sampled on the surface, at the bottom, and at different levels in the shaft cavities. Maximum concentration of 3.5 percent was measured in one shaft in West Virginia. Air velocity down the raise drill shafts is always very low, Maximum recorded air down the drill stem was 3,000 cfm, which can be increased by adding air compressors. The best way to ventilate shaft cavities is through the simultaneous use of air compressors and vacuum pumps. If the methane concentration cannot be reduced with additional compressors, then the inside diameter of the drill rod should be increased, or larger pilot hole drill bits should be used.

The purpose of this publication is to discuss grounding mediums and the phases of grounding related to corrosion and cathodic protection. The material presented is believed to contribute to a better understanding of this subject. It also indicates more effective methods of reducing corrosion damage to metal structures and equipment in the mining industry by cathodic protection. The authors do not intend to discuss technical aspects but rather to explain the general principles of this method of inhibiting corrosion. The relationship between soil resistivity, protective grounding, and corrosion is presented. Corrosion causes the annual loss of billions of dollars; which can be greatly reduced. Losses in the mineral industry can be excessive owing to the extensive use of direct-current power, the presence of considerable dampness, and the frequent, indiscriminate use of dissimilar metals.

Real gross national product3 (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.2% in the fourth quarter compared with a revised 4.3% rate in the third quarter, according to the most recent estimates released by the U.S. Department of Commerce (table 1). Expanding inventories, Government purchases of goods and services, residential fixed investment, and a narrowing of the trade deficit fueled the growth. Significantly reduced consumer demand led to the heavy inventory growth. Almost half of the buildup in inventories consisted of automobiles because consumers reduced purchases when Detroit ceased most incentive programs in late summer. Reduced consumer demand also affected imports, however, and the narrowing of the trade deficit resumed after widening in the third quarter. Nonresi- [ ] dential fixed investment also declined after a strong gain in the third quarter. On a year-to-year basis, the economy grew at an inflation-adjusted rate of 2.9%, the same as that of 1986. However, on a fourth-quarter-to-fourth-quarter basis, the real growth reached 3.8%, the highest growth since 19M, and exceeded the Reagan Administration's estimate of 3.4%. Rising merchandise exports accounted for about one-third of the growth in GNP for all of 1987 and are expected to continue to grow as domestic manufactures benefit from the lower value of the dollar vis-a-vis other major trading country currencies. Consumer demand became a less important factor of economic growth, but employment continued to grow (table 2), and civilian unemployment declined by 0.9 percentage points (December to December) as the industrial sector geared up to increase exports. Inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted GNP price index, remained low at 3.4%.

Talc mining ·in the state of New York was first started about 1876, but important production did not start until 1880, when about 4,000 tons were shipped, In 1883 the production was about 6,000 tons valued at $75,000, or an average of $12.50 per ton, From this date the production gradually inc~eased to a peak of 93,236 tons in 1916, valued at $961,510 or about $10,30 per ton, In 1918 the production declined to 71,167 tons valued at $902,100, or about $12,70 per ton. For ma.ey years New York ,-Jas the largest producer in the United states, but in 1917 and 1918 its output was surpassed by Vennont in tonnage thou[;h not in value. In June, 1920, there were three companies producing talc in the Gouverneur district, st. La,1Tence Co'Ul'lty, and one near Natural Bridge.

Chlorates and perchlorates, when mixed with certain reducing materials, may give a detonating explosive of considerable power. Concerning explosive chlorate mixtures, Guttman3/ states that they "have at all times fascinated inventors on account of the large amount of oxygen stored up in potassium chlorate, which can be given off so readily. When Lavoiser and Berthollet tried to make a chlorate powder in a stamp mill in 1788, they made a great show of it, and even two ladies were present. Unfortunately, after a certain amount of pounding the powder exploded and killed an official and the daughter of the Government commissary, who assisted at the experiments.***. It is interesting to observe how the same old mixtures are proposed over and over again with slight alterations only, in order to qualify for a patent. Potassium chlorate with some carbonaceous matter like charcoal, sugar, starch, glycerin, flour, or sometimes a vegetable or mineral oil and the like occurs again and again." Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines monitored rock mass response to mining of an experimental underhand longwall stope in Hecla Mining Co.'s LUCKY Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. This stope design, the Lucky Friday underhand longwall (LFUL), was proposed as a means of controlling rock bursting while also allowing increased mechanization of mining operations. Instruments were specifically manufactured to monitor three geomechanical factors (backfill performance, ramp stability, and rock mass response) that directly affect the success of stope design. Despite considerable difficulties with instrument installation and survival in the harsh mine environment, especially within the stope fill, sufficient information was collected to suggest that the LFUL method was successful in achieving project goals. This conclusion, in addition to favorable economic and operational evidence, led the mine to adopt the method throughout the mine. Indeed, this study and mining experience suggest that underhand longwall mining could be considered a feasible mining method for rock-burst-prone ground throughout the Coeur d'Alene District. Further Reports of Investigations (RI) in this series present in-depth analyses of the effects of backfill on rock bursting and calibration of a stope numerical model.

"Researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the mechanics of respirable size fragment formation in coal. The project is based on the premise that a thorough understanding of the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation may lead to techniques for reduction and better control of coal dust problems in mines. Presently, it is believed that the mode of fracture propagation which can range from pure tensile to pure shear or any mixed mode in between and the loading or displacement rate can influence the amount of respirable size fragments that are generated on new fracture surfaces during the fracture propagation process The essence of any coal cutting process is one of mixed mode fracture propagation. To study the crack propagation process, a unique mixed mode testing rig was designed and fabricated. This rig is capable of applying loads to a prenotched test specimen that range from pure Mode I (tensile mode) to nearly pure Mode II (shear mode) or many mixed mode loading combinations. It is also possible to apply different loading or displacement rates to the test specimen. With this rig, it is possible to create new fracture surfaces via the different fracture modes and under various loading conditions.These new fracture surfaces are examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterize the amount of structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that occurs during the fracture process. Initial observations suggest that the amount of fine fragment formation and the new fracture surface appearance is related to the fracture initiation conditions, particularly the fracture mode and the loading rate. Mode II loading and higher loading rates seem to generate more structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that Mode 1 loading at slower rates.With the mixed mode test rig, the mechanics of fracture initiation for a single crack can be controlled to better understand its influence on respirable size fragment formation. Such understanding may lead to methods which characterize the tendency of specific coal seams to produce undesirable fine fragments during the fracture process, or it may lead to rational recommendations and design guidelines or coal mining machines which inherently produce less dust.IntroductionAs part of a larger effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners, researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal. This project is part of a com¬prehensive research effort within the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust which is jointly administered by The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University.The principal source of the coal dust in underground mining is the cutting operation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and various European research organizations have conducted investigations into the mechanics of coal cutting for many years. These studies of airborne respirable dust (ARD) formation have concentrated on empirical studies of the various cutting parameters and their effect on ARD for¬mation. The parameters study include depth of cut, cutting speed and bit spacing.(1,2) Other studies investigated the effect of symmetric and asymmetric bit wear and various bit geometries and designs (3-5) Roepke(6) summarized the principals of proper coal cutting to minimize dust formation by recommending to ""cut at maximum depth (maximum advance rate) at all times, at minimum RPM, with the fewest possible bits, having the lowest possible included tip angle."" "INTRODUCTION .As part of its spot drilling program, the Bureau of Mines core-drilled seven holes on the Alexander and Barber properties in Spartanburg County, S. C.Extensive surface float and outcrops of sillimanite schist on these properties appeared to justify drilling, which did not prove satisfactory, however, owing to the spotty occurrence of the schist bodies and the poor core recovery in the decomposed schist.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The farm house on the property is 0.4 mile north on this road. The sillimanite outcrop is in a field approximately 1,200 feet east of the farm house. The Barber property is about 2 miles north along the unsurfaced road that passes the Alexander property."
