Few elements have received more attention and developed greater interest in the last ten years than titanium. The substantially pure metal has been din...ie. cult to isolate, and so far has been little employed oommercially, but the use af alloys and chemical compounds of titanium has increased markedly in recent years. The earlier attempts at preparing pure titanium resulted in various impure forme which, from their metallic appearance, were always mistaken for the metal. Hunter in 1910 isolated pure titanium by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with sodium. This brief statement is issued by the Bureau of Mines in response to numerous inquiries which have been received concerning titanium. More complete in. formation on the metal may be had by consulting the referenpes appended. The Literature is voluminous and only the more important references are Riven. It has been drawn upon freely in preparing this report; also information was supplied by M. g. Hunter, Arthur Braid, M 1. Schmid, C. M. Johnson, N. B. Hoffman, and de Courny Browne. The pioneer investigator in titanium is A. IL Rossi.

Research by the Bureau of Mines has shown that treatment of open pit waste by crushing and sizing followed by flotation of the fines and leaching the coarse fraction results in greater metal recoveries than obtained by leaching only. Tests with a chalcocite-bearing quartz monzonite mine waste sample that had been crushed to minus 6 inches and screened on 1/2 inch yielded copper and silver recoveries of 71 and 22 percent, respectively, by the combined flotation-leaching process, compared with 48 percent of the copper and no silver recovered leaching the run-of-mine material. Copper was more readily leached from the coarse material with the minus 1/2-inch fines removed than from material with the fines included. The improved leaching was attributed to improved permeability and the associated improved circulation of air to the interior of the ore column. Cost estimates showed that the proposed intensive treatment of mine waste will require a greater capital investment and higher annual operating costs than conventional milling and dump leaching process. However, the income from the additional metal production offsets the increase in capital investment and operating costs, resulting in additional profit.

This report presents a literature review conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The review summarizes what has been learned from recent empirical studies of the relationship between mine safety and characteristics of miners, mine management, and mining companies. The review is based on literature published in the United States during the period from 1976 to 1988. In addition to summarizing the empirical findings, this report discusses the implications and limitations of these studies, and gives recommendations for improving mine safety. An annotated bibliography section appears in the appendix.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the conversion of nonmagnetic iron minerals to magnetic form through reduction Toasting operations. The primary objective was to obtain a concentrate that could be used as a direct shipping material for blast furnace consumption. Crude iron materials from the Steep Rock Lakes, Ontario, area were prepared into a blend of 8 parts siliceous ore, 3 parts pyritic ore, and 1 part tailings. Experimental work included laboratory reduction roasting tests, two continuous 10-day campaigns, and one 12-hour test all in a 34-inch by 36¬-foot rotary kiln. The objective of the project was achieved in producing an iron concentrate containing about 66 percent iron with over 90 percent iron recovery. Desirable operating conditions were developed in the kiln but optimum process variables were not completely established.

A reconnaissance study of kyanite-group mineral deposits in the Northwest has revealed large exploitable reserves of the mullite-forming raw materials in the Woodrat Mountain and Goat Mountain districts of north-central Idaho. Potential coproducts or byproducts are garnet and muscovite mica. The Woodrat Mountain district contains garnet-kyanite-mica schist, which has been traced for 6 miles and may extend farther. Surface samples average 29 percent kyanite and contain up to 15 percent garnet. Inferred reserves of strippable ore with a low waste-to-ore ratio, and containing more than 15 percent kyanite, are more than 3 billion short tons. The Goat Mountain district contains several kyanite-mineral zones. Samples of the richest zones average from 10 to 20 percent kyanite minerals and represent about 200 million short tons of strippable rock. Beneficiation tests indicate that the kyanite minerals and garnet can be concentrated by a combination of gravity, flotation, and electromagnetic methods. Reserves in these deposits are sufficient to satisfy any foreseeable domestic and export demand. However, the freight tariff to reach the nearest major users of kyanite (located in the Midwest) has discouraged development of western kyanite resources. Western demand of a magnitude to support a moderate to large milling operation has not yet been developed. However, there is some foreign market potential. If a garnet byproduct could be prepared and sold for coated abrasive products or as grinding grains, an offset possibly could be gained to a por¬tion of the mining and milling costs for the Pacific Northwest producer. Such byproduct values would offer a means for expanding the geographic market areas as well as the regional market potential.

Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

The purposes of this Bureau of Mines report are to review the history of the domestic offshore hydrocarbon production; to project offshore oil and lease condensate production from 1971 through 1985; and to show the impact of offshore development on the onshore segment of the petroleum industry. Since 1954, offshore production has provided an increasingly larger portion of the domestic oil production. Domestic offshore oil and lease condensate production has increased from about 2.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 16.7 pct in 1970. Likewise, marketed gas production has increased from 1.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 15.0 pct in 1970. The past performance of exploration, leasing, development, and production of the offshore petroleum industry was used to make projections of offshore oil production. A comparison between onshore and offshore operations was also made. Assuming a tentative Department of the Interior offshore leasing schedule is completed by 1980, the authors estimate that by 1985, about 30 pct of domestic crude oil and lease condensate production from the lower 48 States will come from offshore areas. Currently, leasing of Federal offshore areas has been delayed due to environmental considerations. The rate at which off-shore hydrocarbons will enter the energy market will depend, to a large extent, on how soon environmental considerations are resolved. Assuming that offshore leasing will resume in the near future, U.S. offshore production of crude oil and lease condensate should be about 934 million barrels in 1985.

The Bureau of Mines sampled surface exposures of podiform chromite in the Caribou Mountain-Melozitna ultramafic belt in the Kokrines-Hodzana Highlands, central Alaska. Fieldwork began in 1979 as part of an assessment of the mineral potential of lands adjacent to the trans-Alaska pipeline corridor, for the Bureau of Land Management, and continued through 1981 as a Bureau of Mines investigation. The belt comprises six complexes of which the three closest to the pipeline corridor were investigated. Concentrations of chromite disseminated in dunite host rock make up mineralized intervals ranging in thickness from less than an inch to 5 ft and in grade from 3 to 23 pct chromium. The largest occurrence has an exposed strike length of 80 ft. Bulk surface samples were collected from 10 of these exposures, and beneficiation tests on the samples produced concentrates of metallurgical, refractory, and subindustrial grades. When location guidelines are followed in choosing sites for fixed point velocity transducers for use in underground coal mine monitoring, mine air turbulence intensities <11% are generally expected at those sites. The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation to determine the effect of turbulence intensities <11% on vortex shedding sensors and transducers. Measurements were made at velocity levels of interest for underground coal mine monitoring use (?200, ?500, ?1,000, ?1,500 ft/min). The effect of grid-produced turbulence intensities (2% to ?14%) on the output of vortex-shedding air-velocity transducers was less than ±10%.

Brown iron ore resources in Barbour , Butler , Crenshaw , and Pike Counties were investigated in a drilling program and geological study by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Alabama Geological Survey and the University of Alabama . The aggregate footage drilled was 18,010 linear feet . When developed , reserves of 12,664,000 long tons of crude ore were indicated , containing from 26.9 to 29.0 percent iron and 0.2 to 1.6 percent manganese under a maximum overburden of 40 feet . Total inferred crude ore for the four counties was calculated to be 827,700,000 long tons . Beneficiation of samples by simulated log washing and use of a 1 / 8 - inch screen yielded from 46.8 to 51.7 percent iron and 0.2 to 2.6 percent manganese . Screen- test studies indicated no appreciable interlocking between the iron and manganese minerals and the waste particles of materials retained on a 200 - mesh screen . Clay was prominent in micron - size slimes . Silica was deleterious in the minus 20 - mesh size . While an indicated 2,198,000 dry long tons of usable iron ore can be recovered , sink - and - float tests show that it may be possible for 4,654,000 dry long tons to be recovered by other than log washing . However , applicable commercial processes have not been demonstrated .

Statistical analyses indicate that the presplit fracture plane did not reduce the vibration level.

The objective of the present studies was to develop thick adherent and coherent coatings of platinum and palladium on refractory metals and other substrates of industrial and engineering importance. Existing platinum and palladium electrolytes were modified to make them suitable for the electrodeposition of thick deposits. The optimum operating conditions for these electrolytes were established. Pretreatment procedures for columbium, copper, graphite, molybdenum, nickel, stainless steel, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, and zirconium substrates were studied. New pretreatment procedures for columbium, molybdenum, stainless steel, tantalum, tungsten, and nickel were developed. The internal stress and hardness of selected electrodeposits were measured. The effects of heat treatment upon the properties of electrodeposits were studied.

"The kaolin deposits of Aiken County, South Carolina (fig. 1), have been worked continuously since 1852. It has been long known that the deposits contain a high percentage of alumina and that large reserves exist. These facts led to the early selection of this area for examination in the search by the Bureau of Mines for high-alumina clays. An exploratory program was started by the Bureau, and drilling was carried on from June 27, 1942, to October 31, 1942.The kaolin-bearing district occupies an area approximately 25 miles long and 11 miles wide, running northeast, with its center at Aiken, S. C. (fig. 1). Within this district, a triangular area bounded by Horse Creek, Silver Bluff Road, and Hamburg Road was roughly prospected by boring 43 machine and 12 hand holes. As a result of the data obtained, a final smaller area was chosen for more systematic prospecting. This area is bounded by Pine Log, Tewkesbury, Silver Bluff, and Craig Sawmill Roads and covers about 4,000 acres.Mineral exploration agreements covering 11,272 acres were signed by 35 property owners, and 11,956 feet was drilled in 200 holes on these properties.The Bureau of Mines exploration work in the district has indicated 19,514,000 short tons of kaolin, of which approximately 10,000,000 tons would average over 35 percent alumina.The tonnages and grades of kaolin developed by this exploration are tabulated below.All grades of this kaolin average approximately 2 percent Fe203 and 1.5 percent Ti02.This project was under the general supervision of J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-Metals Mining Section of the Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, until July 1942. The -project was then under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and later Rowe McCrae, consecutively district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. The final report was prepared, under the general supervision of V..J. Lynch, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division, by William A. Liquid incendiaries were burned within the interstices of several different types of sandstone cores to determine the technical feasibility of increasing sandstone permeability by this method. Fuel-oxidant mixtures were tested in 186 cores; six cores exploded when ignited. In virtually all instances, the explosion completely pulverized the sandstone cores. In addition n those cores damaged by explosions, 24 cores were fractured so severely that permeability tests were impossible. Although combustion gener¬ally increased the permeability, specific mixtures at given pressures were inconsistent in their ignition and burning behavior. Tests indicated that the heat of burning incendiaries significantly increased sandstone permeability. The improved permeability ratios were usually less than 2, but one was 10.3. Permeability alteration by other in situ methods was not as effective as that by flame propagation.

To determine whether preheating coals before carbonization would improve the coking properties of the coals, particularly the weaker coking coals, 3 coals, 1 each from Illinois, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, and a blend of the Illinois with a Pocahontas coal were preheated before testing for coking properties in the Bureau&apos;s BM-AGA pilot oven. The effects of preheating on the chemical and physical proper-ties of the coals and on the yields of carbonization products and strength of the coke produced from the preheated coals were determined, as were also the effects of bulk density, gaseous atmosphere, and residence time during preheating. Most benefit from preheating was found with weaker or oxidized coking coals, whereas the more strongly coking coals and blends showed little effect. Direct charging of preheated coal to the coke oven without cooling gave better coke, increased yield of tar, and decreased yield of gas. INTRODUCTION Although 94 percent of today&apos;s coal production comes from fields east of the Mississippi, the Eastern States have only about one-third of the Nation&apos;s recoverable reserves. West Virginia, which now produces more than any other State, has much smaller reserves than Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.5/ However, the manufacture of iron and steel in Western States, which has increased greatly since World War I, is handicapped by the scarcity of high-grade coking coals, such as are plentiful in the Appalachian region. Unless a practical method of improving the cokemaking property of local coals is developed, ferrous metallurgical industries in the West must continue to use inferior coking coals and to pay high shipping charges for better coals.

A calculation procedure was evolved by the Bureau of Mines for determining the heat-transfer characteristics of dilute gas-solid mixtures in an externally heated tube. The procedure accounts for differences in gas and particle velocities and covers a range of particle sizes. Heat transfer coefficients obtained by the calculation procedure are compared with values reported in the literature.

"INTRODUCTION The first important discovery of petroleum in New Mexico was near Dayton, Eddy County, where the Brown well was drilled in 1909, and small quantities of oil were produced. In 1911 and 1912 wells were drilled in McKinley County, but commercial production did not begin until the discovery of the Hogback field, San Juan County, in 1922. The discovery well in the Artesia field, Eddy County, drilled in 1923, gave impetus to active drilling in many areas. Since 1924 New Mexico has produced petroleum in commercial quantities and since 1930 the State has joined the ranks of the big produc¬ing States, being sixth or seventh in total production in recent years.Production by years. 1924 to 1940, inclusive, taken from annual figures in Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. The total production shown is 274,331,000 barrels. Andreas 3/ has published production figures for the year 1940 and a resume of all production to the end of 1940. Data from his report are presented in table 2 for each field sampled. The cumulative production, as given by Andreas, is 270,618,575 barrels."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to investigate thin suppression of respirable dust by water sprays on a continuous-mining machine. Determining the importance of the top and bottom sprays for two types of spray nozzles was emphasized. Results showed, at a 90-pct confidence level, that (1) at least 70 pct of the dust was generated during the sump cut, even though nearly half of the coal was mined during the downshear operation, (2) the water sprays on the top of the boom had little effect in suppressing respirable dust, and (3) B.D. 5 spray nozzles mounted beneath the boom reduced dust at least 33 pet more than B.D. 5 sprays mounted on top of the boom. A single-cut technique was developed that gave good reproducibility for replicate cuts (coefficient of variation of 20 pct).

The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on a dual leaching method that offers the potential for the economic recovery of the silver, as well as of the manganese, contained in some domestic manganiferous silver deposits. The method consists of an initial leach of manganese with aqueous sulfur dioxide (S02) followed first by a neutralization rinse, and then by a second leach with cyanide solution for the extraction of silver. Refractory silver in these ores was either (1) intimately associated with the manganese, (2) chemically resistant to cyanide leaching, or (3) rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization. Less than 10 pct of the silver was extracted when minus 2.5-plus 1.3-cm ore pieces were leached directly with cyanide. However, extractions of 25 to 82 pct of the silver and 65 to 96 pet of the manganese were attained in laboratory column-leach tests using the dual leaching method on equivalent-sized ore pieces from seven domestic deposits.
