During the past 15 years the Bureau of Mines has made and published several hundred analyses of typical petroleums and has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crude oils. In describing crude petroleum frequent reference is made to the "base" of the oil, a usage the petroleum industry has found convenient. As part of its general study of the characteristics of crude oils, therefore, the Bureau of Mines has developed a system of classifying them according to "base." This system as first published in 19274 was limited to four classes and in its original form is no longer considered adequate. Since the system was first published the Bureau has analyzed a large number of crude oil-, including representative samples from nearly every important producing field in the world, and has found that the system of classification could be revised and amplified to advantage. The revised system is presented herein. Bulletin 2916 states that many oil producers and refiners use the word "base" much as it is used in pharmaceutical work. For example, the "base" or "basis" of an ointment or salve is the fatty material (lard, petroleum, or lanolin) used as a vehicle or carrier for the active medicinal principles. Apparently many of the pioneers in the petroleum industry considered crude oil similar in nature to these medicinal products in that it consists of a semisolid, nonvolatile base and 1 volatile portion can be distilled off to make gasoline, kerosene, and other products. Many crude oils when chilled slowly deposit a waxy material (paraffin); this fact may have been one reason for the use of the term "paraffin base" in referring to such oils. Almost all of the petroleum first discovered in the United States was of this nature; not until the oil industry was extended to California and along the Gulf coast was petroleum found that contained no wax but apparently did contain asphaltic material Accordingly, these oils were known as "asphalt-base" oils. The use of this term, however, seems unfortunate, as better-grade oils of this type contain little if any asphalt; the descriptive term "naphthene base" now seems to be a more desirable term than "asphalt base." The term "intermediate base" is also used commonly in referring to oils intermediate in oharacteristios between those of paraffin and naphthene base.

Methane, a highly explosive gas evolved during the coal-formation process, is one of the hazards of mining most difficult to overcome. It is retained between particles of coal and entrapped in strata overlying and underlying the coal beds to a degree dependent upon the permeability of the enclosing strata. Considering that methane might be encountered at any time during the mining of coal, attempts have been made through the years to minimize the sources of ignition at coal-mine faces, such as the introduction of permissible electric equipment, the prohibition of smoking and open lights, and the development of safer explosives. The sparks created when mining-machine picks contact sandstone or iron pyrites2/ constitute one source of ignition, always recognized as a possibility but never greatly emphasized in the United States until recently, when ignitions began occurring with rather alarming frequency and in widely scattered coal-producing areas.

The aim of the present study was to determine the thermal oxidative behavior of materials used in coal mines, with emphasis on the type and relative concentration of the products, in particular the toxic species formed. To supplement this work and to gain understanding as to the type of products possibly formed and also to assess the limitations and advantages of the various analytical methods used a literature survey of the past investigations performed on the compositions of direct interest to the subject program was conducted. The compositions thus covered were cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, neoprene, urethanes, polyamides, polyesters, polyethylene, epoxy, phenoxy, urea-formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde resins. The results of this review are compiled in the Appendix. The experimental work consisted of thermal oxidative degradation of 36 materials and 4 composites using a stagnation burner apparatus developed in these laboratories which affords a dynamic system approximating somewhat the conditions encountered in underground coal mines. This technique as employed during this program gave only the relative product concentration at specific periods of the decomposition process, The advantage of this approach is that in this manner screening of materials can be accomplished in conjunction with some assessment of the decomposition rate as influenced by temperature and material composition. Limited static tests were performed using a sealed tube method. The materials studied were grouped according to their compositions. The following were the main groups: (a) polyvinyl chloride-containing materials, (b) neoprene compositions, (c) rigid foams (urethanes, isocyanates), (d) miscellaneous materials (including jute, fiberglass, polyethylene and some articles of unknown composition), (e) coal and fluids (phosphate esters, organic esters, oil-water emulsions), and finally (J) composites. The latter comprised a mixture of a phosphate ester fluid with (a) coal, (b) a representative polyvinyl chloride sample, and (c) a neoprene type composition.

The absorbed power (PAbs) has been suggested as a better measure of human responses to whole-body vibration, since it relates to the cumulative energy dissipated by the body exposed over a given duration. Moreover, unlike the other measures, the PAbs can adequately account for the intensity of exposure. Although, the vast majority of off-road vehicles impose considerably severe vibration along the horizontal axes, the vast majority of studies on biodynamic response characterization consider only vertical vibration. Only a few studies have reported PAbs responses of the seated human body exposed to horizontal vibration and the major contributing factors [1]. This study aims to characterize the PAbs responses of seated human subjects to horizontal (uncoupled x- and y-axis) vibration as functions of the vibration intensity, subject mass, seat height and the, type of back support. Methods Experiments were conducted using a rigid seat with an adjustable backrest inclination and seat height. The seat was installed on a horizontal vibration simulator and the forces at the seat base and the backrest were measured by three-axis force plates. Two single-axis accelerometers were installed on the seat back and the platform, oriented along the axis of motion. The experiments were performed using three different seat heights (350, 390 and 410 mm), back support conditions (NB- no back support and sitting erect; Wb0- Upper body supported against a vertical back support; and WbA- back supported against an inclined backrest, while sitting relaxed) and three different magnitudes of broad band excitations in the 0.5-10 Hz frequency range (0.25, 0.5 and 1 m/s2 rms acceleration under x-axis and y-axis, applied independently). A total of 8 healthy adult male volunteers with total body mass ranging from 59.4 kg to 92 kg and aged between 21-51 years took part in the experiments. The subjects were seated with their hands in lap, and feet supported on the moving platform for each posture. Each measurement was repeated 2 times, while the data were analysed using a bandwidth of 50 Hz and frequency resolution of 0.0625 Hz. This paper describing the milling methods at the Hughesville concentrator of the St. Joseph Lead Co., Hughesville, Mont., is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the U. S. For shortwall mining to be profitable, the additional capital investment of about $1 million for shortwall roof supports must be offset by decreased total operating costs and/or increased coal production. The Bureau of Mines therefore conducted a demonstration project to compare shortwall and room-and-pillar mining. Daily two-shift production from the bureau of Mines-Beth-Elkhorn Corp. shortwall demonstration n project averaged 975 tons of raw coal, compared with 905 tons from a room-and-pillar unit operating undo r similar conditions. The estimated direct operating costs for the shortwall and room-and-pillar unite were $4.21 and $4.03 pier ton, respectively. The profitability of the shortwall system was found to depend not only on the increased depreciation cost of the powered roof supports and the decreased cost of supplies and materials but also on such factors as the fixed and variable indirect costs and the selling price of the coal. Shortwall mining was demonstrated to be a viable alternative to room-and-pillar mining.

When a company develops a mineral property in a remote area of Alaska, it must consider how best to house its personnel. This Bureau of Mines report examines the economics of two options: company towns and company camps. The price required to maintain a 15% discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) was derived for hypothetical 1,000-st/d cut-and-fill mines and 50,000-st/d open-pit mines located in three different regions of the State, One set of hypothetical mines utilizes a townsite; the other utilizes a relatively new concept, a fly-in camp or commuting operation, in which two shifts of employees operate the mine and all associated facilities for 1 week before being replaced by a second crew. The study shows that operating costs were higher for mines employing the commuting option than for mines having a company town because of the additional wages paid for overtime hours; however, the price required to obtain a 15% DCFROR for the single-product copper concentrate, f.0.b. the mill site, was significantly lower owing to the lower investment costs for the camp-type operation. The economic advantage for those mines utilizing the camp increases from south to north and from the coast toward the interior.

A new prototype ionization-attachment fire detector was developed by the Bureau of Mines for detecting combustion-generated submicrometer particulates. It is much more sensitive than the conventional ionization smoke detector, and it has the following added features: 1. A primary charging current of unipolar air ions is generated by a gold-coated, radioactive center electrode of a cylindrical diode. 2. Submicrometer particulates are flowed axially through the unipolar cloud where they acquire charge. The charged particles impinge upon a third electrode, located downstream, resulting in a current which is directly proportional to the particulate concentration. 3. Additional electrodes analyze the particulates in terms of their mobility and thus determine their size distribution. 4. A filter and cyclone assembly protect the ionization chamber against ambient dust. An analysis of conventional ionization smoke detector performance is also presented in terms of source strength, chamber geometry, and applied potential.

Landstrom et al. (1985) suggested the possibility of cortical activation during exposure to WBV, however, it is not known how cerebral physiology (oxygenation and blood volume) responds in healthy women during different vibration frequencies. This study examined the role of backrest support and handgrip work on cerebral oxygenation and blood volume responses, during exposure to seated WBV. Methods Fourteen women (age: 23.9 ± 3.5 years) were randomly exposed to three frequencies of WBV (3, 4.5 and 6 Hz at approximately 0.9gr.m.s in the vertical direction) on a customized vibrating base (Advanced Therapy Products, Inc., USA) in a seated posture on three separate days. On the first day, the subjects completed an aerobic fitness test until volitional exhaustion on an arm cranking ergometer (Cybex, MET 300, USA). Each WBV session lasted 30 min (6 min baseline without WBV, 8 min WBV ‘with’ or ‘without’ backrest support, and 4 min recovery from WBV, 8 min WBV with ‘opposite’ backrest condition, and 4 min recovery following WBV). During 8 min WBV exposure ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support, subjects performed maximal voluntary rhythmic handgrip contractions with their right hand for 1 min using a dynamometer. To obtain regional oxygenation and blood volume responses, a NIRS sensor (MicroRunman, NIM, Inc., PA, USA) was placed on the anterior right frontal lobe just below the hair and close to fronto-temporalis region (Maikala et al. 2005). Results Baseline oxygenation and blood volume values were recorded during recovery from each WBV session of ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support. The physiological change in oxygenation and blood volume during each frequency (3, 4.5, and 6 Hz) for both backrest (‘with’ and ‘without’ a backrest) and workload (WBV only and WBV combined with rhythmic handgrip contractions) was calculated as the difference between the maximum values identified for each WBV condition of backrest and workload and baseline values (Maikala et al. 2005). Suspended seats perform two functions: Reduce effect of occasional large bumps; Reduce more continuous vibration at a lower level. The former needs high damping. The latter needs low damping. For most mobile work machines the inevitable compromise is generally better than a simple cushion seat, because that amplifies vibration at around 4 Hz which is a sensitive frequency for human vertical WBV. Why have standard tests for seat suspensions? • Seat suspensions are non-linear so any measure of performance depends on operating conditions. For comparison these need to be defined. • Seat manufacturers need benchmarks for product development; • Machine makers choose dynamic characteristics appropriate to their products; • Occupational health specialists wish to control operator exposure to Standard tests should be representative, repeatable and reproducible. These requirements are reviewed in relation to the history of seat test standards and the current position. Current position and history The current position is that we have standard tests for seats for agricultural tractors, earthmoving machinery, industrial (fork-lift) trucks. These tests comprise measurement of vibration transmission and of the rate of damping. Current standards developed as the technology developed, starting around 1960: 1. Test on machine driven over standard surface1. 2. Test on shaker reproducing standard surface. 3. Shaker input replaced by representative spectrum2. 4. Human subject replaced by dynamic dummy. (Not yet settled). Are standard tests representative? The development process has gradually moved seat tests further from reality. 4 hr samples of work exposure suggest that seats do not on average provide large reductions of vertical WBV3. For specific magnitudes of vibration they can work well. For low vibration, performance is reduced by friction and for severe vibration by length of travel. Recent work has led to a new test to quantify how a suspension controls over-travel 9.

In 1984 and 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 162,887-acre Mormon Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-161) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Lincoln County, NV, about 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The study area had no mines or mining claims in 1985, and no mineral resources were identified within the study area, or at the Whitmore mine or Iron Blossom prospect near the study area. The alluvial fans around the southern boundary are staked with about 450 placer claims. Chemical analyses of samples indicate that some limestone in the study area is suitable for manufacturing cement or for agricultural purposes but the limestone is distant from markets and therefore not economic in the foreseeable future. The study area is blanketed with oil and gas leases, but no known productive horizons were identified.

This paper, describing the concentrator of the Molybdenum Corporation of America in Taos County, northern New Mexico. 7 miles east of Questa, is one of a series on milling methods being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The mine from which the ore comes is 1 1/4 miles from the mill, and produces about 40 tons of ore per day by the cut-and-fill method.3 The ore contains about 5 per cent of MoS2. The mill has a capacity of 50 tons of ore per day and utilizes flotation methods. Water is taken from Red River. Power is generated by a water wheel, or by a Diesel engine in times of water shortage during the winter. The mill is located close to the bottom of a canyon, in order to obtain maximum head or, the water wheel, and the flow of ore is therefore maintained partly by gravity and partly by an elevator and pumps. ORE TREATED The MoS2 content of the concentrator feed ranges from 4.5 to 7.5 biotite, fluorite, small amounts of rhodochrosite and calcite, and the minerals of the granodiorite country rock.

The Bureau of Mines conducted this study to provide information concerning the availability of and the demand for construction-mineral aggregates in the Baltimore, Md., Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA). The demand is discussed with reference to the area's current consumption and estimates of the area's demand for aggregates through 1990. Estimates of aggregate supply are presented in conjunction with an examination of the geology of the area, the availability of substitutes, and the effect of transportation costs. A discussion of the constraints affecting aggregate availability precedes the conclusions and recommendations. The availability of aggregates is subject to geologic, economic, and political constraints. As of January 1974, an estimated 20,100 million tons of stone was available to meet the demand projected through 1990 (188.7 million tons). An estimated 139 million tons of sand and gravel was available to meet the demand projected through 1990 (84.3 million tons). Several alternative actions are available within the area to insure the adequacy of the stone supply and to increase the supply of sand and gravel: (1) The establishment of special mineral resource zones; (2) the application of sequential land use techniques; and (3) the exploration of previously undeveloped regions.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an overcore stress measurement on the 5300 level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, to investigate the stress regime around an experimental stope in a rock-burst-prone mine. The result indicated a stress field with unexpected magnitude and orientation [s 1 ?135 MPa (19,600 psi) oriented S 80° W). An unusual amount of rock-burst activity was encountered during subsequent excavation. A careful review of the overcore data suggested the overcore strain measurements were valid. Moreover, concentrated rock-burst activity suggested that the measured stress field did exist, but was localized and therefore did not represent the far-field in situ stress field.

The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of the cab design and to determine the percentage of musculoskeletal symptoms among operators of mobile equipment used in mining and construction. A questionnaire was designed to assess demographics, work information, job history, and musculoskeletal symptoms in operators of heavy mobile equipment. Information concerning equipment included design of the seat/chair, levers, pedals, bothersome vibration, quality of ingress/egress from the equipment, proper preventative maintenance and repairs, and age of the equipment. The body regions that were evaluated included the neck, middle/upper back, low-back, shoulder/upper-arm, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot. Five hundred and eighty six operators completed the questionnaire. The results indicate that these workers are at risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders, and the need to quantify risk factors (i.e., whole-body vibration and static sitting postures).

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) have been widely used as fire resistant dielectri coolants in electrical equipment used in mining applications, including transformers capacitors, electric motors, and electromagnets. In addition, PCBs have been used in hydraulic fluids and heat transfer fluids, and are present in many oil filled transformers. The Environmental Protection Agency recently banned the manufacture of PCBs and equipment using PCBs, and imposed strict requirements on the continued use and disposal of existing PCB equipment. This manual discusses the EPA requirements, suggest ways to decrease the risks resulting from continued use of PCB equipment, and surveys the non-PCB equipment that is available as replacements for the PCB electrical equipment presently used in mines.

The Bureau of Mines developed and tested in the laboratory several innovative techniques for reclaiming used lubricating oil. These processes included percolation through both chemically treated clay and ion-exchange resins, distillation through batch and continuous wiped-wall vacuum apparatus, treatment with solvent extraction systems, and chemical removal of impurities with chelating agents. In each treatment, the criteria of evaluation was oil recovery and reduction of acidic and metallic components. Both vacuum distillation and solvent treatment ranked high in their abilities to remove acidic and metallic components of the used oil with good oil recoveries. A combination of the two techniques gave the best overall results in terms of quality evaluations made by established bench tests. The methods were not ranked according to economic practicablity.

The demand for aluminum for military use during World War II called for an expansion of aluminum production in the United States A large part of the bauxite (the normal ore of aluminum) consumed in this county comes from Netherlands Guiana, South America. During the war, enemy activities were at times a serious threat to the flow of bauxite to the United States. The need for aluminum. stimulated the investigation of domestic deposits of bauxite and emphasized the wisdom of studying other aluminous materials, such as high-alumina and diaspore clays, to determine their possible use as aluminum ores. The occurrence in Pennsylvania of high-alumina flint clays and nodular diaspore clays has been known for many years. Several companies are mining these high-alumina, low-iron (less than 3 percent Fe2O3) clays and using them for the manufacture of refractory brick. Most of the production has come from Clearfield County, but clay deposits arc known also in Cambria, Centre, Clarion, Clinton, Indiana, Jefferson, Somerset, and Westmoreland, Counties.

Chronic whole-body vibration exposure, as expected in large construction and mining vehicles, has been associated with neck and back pain and injury.1 While work has been done towards gaining a better understanding of the relationship between vibration and shock and muscle activity of the back musculature2, relatively little information regarding the activity of neck, shoulder and upper arm muscles is known. Today’s equipment designs must conform to domestic and international standards, however these standards do not specifically address the vibration exposure in the head and upper quarter. Further it is not well known how the control configuration within a vehicle (e.g. steering wheel versus arm controls) influences muscle voluntary and reflex activity levels. Greater muscle activity may lead to greater muscle fatigue – which in turn may be associated with greater risk of injury.2 Thus, muscle contractions needed to maintain static postures as well as those resulting reflexively should be considered during an analysis of seating position. Unfortunately, little is known regarding the influence of arm position on head and neck muscle function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative muscle activities of 5 neck, shoulder, and upper arm muscles during riding simulations of large construction equipment, using three different arm control options. Methods Five typical heavy equipment ride files were “played back” through a man-rated Servo Test 6-degree of freedom (dof) vibration system. Each ride was repeated using 3 seat and control configurations (steering wheel (SW), floor mounted arm-rest controls (FM), seat mounted arm-rest controls (SM)). Two trials were performed for each ride and seat control combination (each trial: 60 sec of 6-dof and 60 sec of vertical vibration). Five channels of surface electromyography (EMG) of the right-side cervical erector spinae muscles (neck extensors), sternocleidomastoid (neck flexor), upper trapezius (shoulder elevator), biceps brachii (elbow flexor) and triceps brachii (elbow extensor) muscles were collected throughout each ride (~ 2min) using pre-amplified (10x), 1 cm silver bar electrodes, with 1 cm fixed inter-electrode distances (Delsys, Inc). Further analog amplification was set at 10k (1k for one subject), and sampled at 1000Hz using a 12-bit DAQ card and Labview 7.1 software (National Instruments). A total of 7 right-handed male subjects were tested, but only 5 had complete EMG data sets to analyze for this sub-study. EMG was analyzed using root mean square (RMS, in mV) of 20 ms moving windows, and then averaged across the entire trial for a measure of mean total muscle activity (voluntary and reflexive). The muscle activity to maintain the static posture was estimated as the mean RMS EMG over a 1 sec interval just prior to and/or after completion of the ride. Repeated Measures ANOVAs were used to test for with-in subject differences using a = 0.05.
