A wide variety of mining conditions exists within the South Midlands Area and across this range of conditions more than one half of the mines are highly susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Two thick seams in which the greatest risk exists are described and illustrated. The different heatings which take place are categorized by the locations at which they occur in the mines: additional special cases not easily categorized by location are discussed separately. The discussion for each category of heating follows the pattern of: (i) the reasons why it occurs; (ii) when it arises the means by which it is fought, and (iii) the preventive measures taken in an attempt to avoid its occurrence. Relatively new factors which may affect the incidence of heatings are highlighted and suggestions are made which may assist in reducing the number of incidents in the Area. A new method of continuous sampling, analysis and recording is described and mention made of an original method of interpreting carbon monoxide results with the aid of the computer. The first results from this work show that an early warning is given of an adverse change in trend several weeks earlier than with the present methods. Lastly, suggestions are made about the direction in which research might proceed to assist in reducing the special hazards created by several features inherent in the present methods of mining.

Investigations of the dispersion of gold in soils and stream sediments associated with three gold deposits in Thailand indicate the existence of different geochemical dispersion patterns in the three areas, demonstrating the need for the adoption of a variety of exploration techniques. The three gold deposits which were investigated were the Phu Tham Phra-Phu Thong Daeng copper-gold prospect, the Doi Tung and the Huai Hin Lab gold prospects. Overall the investigations at the three localities demonstrate clearly that the chances of exploration success can be significantly enhanced if composite soil samples are analysed to ensure a more reliable estimation of the gold content in soils and if both the 63 micrometre fraction and the field-panned concentrates of stream sediments are analysed because of the variable grain size of the gold characterising different gold deposits and surface environments.

Discussion by B.P.J. Stevens of the paper, published in Trans. IMMA, vol.104, 1995, p.B1-B17, is presented together with the authors' response. Stevens questions the authors' radically different interpretation of the structural geology of the Broken Hill Block, considering that the descriptive part of the paper is a useful addition but that the conclusions are unwarranted on the basis of the data presented. A number of major points of disagreement are outlined and half a dozen additional minor points listed. In response, the authors admire Stevens's contribution to unravelling the geology of the area but defend their attempts to take the regional studies a step further, pointing out that he has misquoted what they wrote and arguing that because of the assumptions underpinning the derivation of the present stratigraphy it cannot be used to constrain structural models. With regard to shear zones, they cite the extensive earlier literature and refer to horizontal displacements shown on maps produced by Stevens et al. Detailed discussion follows of the stratigraphy and of the stratigraphic correlation problems resulting from failure to recognise the presence and significance of shears, particularly those parallel to stratigraphy. The remobilised position of the Pb mineralisation in the North Mine open cut is reiterated. It is concluded that there is an urgent need for systematic isotopic dating in the area to constrain the stratigraphy

"The Windarra nickel deposits display many of the characteristics that typify Archaean volcanic peridotite-associated nickel sulphide ores of Western Australia. The Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide mineralization, which comprises dominantly disseminated sulphides, occurs at the base of a differentiated ultramafic volcanic pile grading upwards from massive meta-peridotitic flows to thin, locally spinifex-textured meta-picritic units. The entire mafic-ultramafic belt has been subjected to mid-amphibolite- facies metamorphism. The ore-bearing ultramafic is immediately underlain by dominantly sulphide-facies banded iron formation (BIF), which commonly contains nickel sulphides adjacent to its contact with mineralized ultramafic. BIF-hosted ores are formed both by physical remobilization of ultramafic-hosted sulphides and by migration of Ni and Cu into pre-existing iron sulphides.At Mt. Windarra the mineralization comprises eight steeply dipping, steeply plunging elongate oreshoots, which display a marked parallelism with major and minor fold structures in the underlying BIF. Seven of the shoots occur at or close to the base of the ultramafic pile, and are hosted by at least three overlapping flows. The zone of overlap occurs at the northern end of each flow, where picritic ultramafic, representing a dominantly liquid portion of the flow, occupies the basal contact. A gross south- north ultramafic flow direction is inferred. The eighth shoot occurs in a stratigraphically higher position within the ultramafic sequence.At South Windarra at least two overlapping mineralized flows occupy the basal contact, the ore zone having a strike extent three to four times its downdip extent. There is no obvious structural control to the mineralization."

This paper presents methods in use in British coal-mines for the suppression of dust. While the effect of present-day treatment will not be apparent for several years, in pits in South Wales, concentrations as high as 50 gm./1,000 cu. ft. were some years ago fairly common in various operations at or near the coal-face, with an average concentration of 20 gm./1,000 cu. ft. Now the average concentration in what were previously dusty pits is probably not greater than 3 gm./1,000 cu. ft.Nevertheless, every effort must be made to improve conditions still further. In South Wales it is claimed that 99% of the coal-faces requiring treatment have been dealt with either by wet cutting, infusion, or hand-spraying. The extent of the treatment by these methods can be gauged by the fact that the total length of coal-faces now being treated by water infusion in Cardiff and Swansea areas is about 33,000 yds., by wet cutting 25,000 yds., and by hand-spraying nearly 14,000 yds. The influence of methods of mining upon dust production is only mentioned very briefly in this review, and there is no doubt that much more is to be learned concerning this aspect. It can be stated, however, that good mining practice is essential to prevent unnecessary dust production, and the problem of dust in mines will be solved only by the closest co-operation between mine managers, workmen, and scientists.

A study of the thermodynamic properties of magnesium chloride ammines was carried out with the ultimate objective that the thermal decomposition of the hexammine MgCl2.6NH3 may prove successful on a commercial scale for the manufacture of anhydrous magnesium chloride, which is required for the efficient electrolytic production of magnesium. The experimental data are presented in the form of an equilibrium diagram that aids the understanding of the conditions associated with the thermal decomposition of ammines

Numerical modelling was used to determine the magnitude and direction of stresses around drives both adjacent to and distant from open stopes in the South Crofty tin mine. Modelling predicted that drives near the stopes are situated in a stress-relaxed zone. The peripheries of drives that are sited in solid rock away from the influence of stoping are in compression. Key-block modelling was used to determine the typical geometries of critical blocks and distinct element modelling was used to determine block stability. The conclusions derived from modelling fitted the observational data. This indicated that key-block theory is a valid tool for analysing the stability of roadways in the South Crofty mine. The support requirements for drives located next to stoped-out areas were formulated using a risk analysis approach to key-block formation. The results were compared with support guidelines derived using empirical design methods. Good agreement was obtained for the roofs of the drives but not for the sidewalls. The concept of a critical excavation width was formulated: once an excavation is larger than the critical size the length of rockbolts need not be increased as the excavtion dimensions increase. This may be the case in all rock mases.

Redox front processes in rocks are important in the context of both radioactive waste disposal and the development of orebodies. Results are presented from a study of the distribution of uranium and thorium and the natural decay series equilibrium about redox fronts in a granite at the Criffel pluton and Craignair quarry, Dalbeattie in southwest Scotland. The results are considered in the context of large scale uranium aqueous transport in the region and compared with those from a previous study of highly developed redox fronts at Pocos de Caldas, Brazil. Results show that the Criffel pluton has experienced a recent and rapid removal of uranium from the uppermost section of the granite whereas thorium has remained relatively immobile. The radium and uranium distributions indicate that diffusion processes probably control the distribution of radionuclides about the front. These processes are similar to those observed at Pocos de Caldas. The trends of concentration and activity ratio about the Dalbeattie redox front are less pronounced than those at Pocos de Caldas owing to the shorter time available for the process and the lower intensity of weathering at Dalbeattie.

The previous papers have been concerned only with the atmospheric oxidation of coals from the Barnsley Seam, for which it has been shown that an adequate explanation of the origin and nature of gob-fires can be based on the reaction between the coal itself and the oxygen of the air without the intervention of any other substance. It becomes of importance, therefore, to ascertain how far a similar explanation will hold good for spontaneous heating in other seams, and with this object in view samples including anthracite and lignite have been taken from a considerable number of pits in different parts of the UK (south Wales, Northumberland and Durham, north Staffordshire, Portrush and Ayrshire), some liable to fire, others not. There is abundant evidence to support the commonly-accepted view that spontaneous heating is due to the heat evolved during the absorption of oxygen from the air by coal or pyrites. The quantity of heat produced by the reaction has been measured and it has been shown that the observed rate of heating of a sample of coal agrees with the rate calculated from the heat of reaction and the rate of absorption of oxygen

The activity of MnO has been measured in the system CaF2-MnO at 1773 and 1873 K and in the system CaF2-CaO-MnO at 1773 K by the method of equilibration with platinum. Large positive deviations from ideal solution laws have been found, but these became less as the lime content rose. The loss of a volatile component made activity measurements impossible in the CaF2-AI203-MnO system, but the boundaries of a two-liquid region have been measured at 1773 K.

Residual subsidence is generally accepted as being about 5% of the total subsidence occurring within 12 months of all mining finishing. This paper looks at five case studies from different parts of the country, in various mining settings within a depth range of 430m to 760m. From a single seam single panel working to working the eleventh seam, all are within the concealed coalfield, similar to today's mining. The monitoring of subsidence continued for many years once the mining had finished and the results obtained are at considerable variance from the accepted norm. Subsidence has been found to carry on for up to eleven years after mining has ended, within a range of 8% to 45% of total subsidence. A highly significant factor was that subsidence, as a whole, was generally much more than predicted. The residual subsidence aspect has to he viewed in this context and in order to debate the subject at length, the causes of residual subsidence have to be balanced against the apparent inability to accurately predict subsidence. The results from the case studies were similar, even though the mining settings differed considerably. Subsidence of around 10% to 20% continued for several years after mining had ceased.

The philosophy and detail of mill design in developing countries, where it is frequently difficult to obtain experienced, qualified supervision to operate the plant, are discussed. The resulting design suggests the desirability of simple units, with maximum visibility of equipment operation and material movement, which allow the minimal technical supervision to see the plant conditions prevailing. Information on plant conditions during periods of lesser supervision can be provided by the use of simple, low-maintenance recorders. Where the mill is intended for operation in a developing country, it is insufficient for the flowsheets and plant layouts merely to be drawn: the process metallurgist must pay meticulous attention to details that could ordinarily be left to the design detailing group. The design of this type of mill requires a knowledge of human engineering—of the type of individual who will operate and supervise the plant; probable changes in personnel should be taken into account. Details are suggested for coarse-ore handling, screens, feeders, secondary and tertiary crushers, conveyors, dust collecting, fine-ore feeding, grinding mills, conditioners, flotation, thickeners, filters, reagent systems, sand pumping, sampling, instrumentation, safety and construction

A new range of wear-resistant materials is being produced by technology that has been used to develop high performance metal-matrix composites. These include steels and aluminium alloys that can be made as sheet, plate, rod or bar. The incorporation of hard, wear-resistant particles in an alloy matrix is achieved by reactive casting, spray deposition and powder metallurgical techniques. For example, large particles of TiC can be homogeneously distributed in steel during casting and the subsequent product can easily be rolled to plate. Similarly, up to 20% alumina particles and SiC can be injected, respectively, into steel and wear-resistant aluminium alloys by spray deposition. The current state of development of the process is reviewed and indications are given of the projected applications of such materials.

The mineralisation is associated with a composite diorite to quartz monzonite stock of Permian to Triassic age that intrudes Devonian carbonate strata. In the intrusive rocks it is associated with potassic alteration and in the carbonate wall rocks it is hosted by prograde garnet-rich and retrograde epidote-rich skarn. Both porphyry and skarn mineralisation include disseminated and fracture-controlled mineralisation, the latter probably accounting for the major part of the contained minerals. Copper, gold, silver and zinc are strongly positively correlated within the mineralised zones, although there are small differences in metal ratios between the different ore types; molybdenum appears to be negatively correlated with copper and gold. Ore minerals include chalcopyrite, magnetite and pyrite in porphyry-type mineralisation and bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, magnetite and lesser haematite in skarn.

Botswana's mining industry value is forecast to average 5.2% growth from 2014-2018 with solid growth for the diamond sector and acceleration of coal production. "During the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex in the Potgietersrus area magma reacted with the original floor rocks— Archaean granite or Malmani dolomite and overlying Penge handed ironstone or sedimentary rocks of the Pretoria Series. The complex sequence of sulphide-rich mafic rocks that formed along the contact is known as the Platreef. Associated with the sul­ phide mineralization are important concentrations of platinum-group metals, copper and nickel. Xenoliths of Malmani dolo­ mite have been incorporated into the Platreef and previous work has suggested that anhydrite is likely to have been present in the dolomite. The sedimentarv-derived sulphur thus introduced into the magma exercised an important control on the forma­ tion of the sulphides.Petrographic studies on the Platreef rocks from the Tweefontein area indicate that the original magma reacted with the banded ironstone to form iron-rich pyroxenites. In the Turfspruit area, to the south, the footwall rocks consist of sediments of the Timeball Hill Series. Original argillaceous rocks have been metamorphosed to cordierite-, corundum- and spinel-bearing hornfelses. Graphite was present in the contact zone in both the Tweefontein and Turfspruit areas. Anhydrite-bearing hornfels rocks are also present on Turfspruit.The Platreef rocks that overlie the corundum- and spinel-bearing hornfelses on Turfspruit are peridotitie, and pyroxenites are present in areas underlain by cordierite-bearing hornfels. The absence of orthopyroxene in the peridotite is probably indicative of low silica activity in the original magma. The pyroxenites have, however, undergone silica contamination from the underlying more siliceous cordierite hornfels.Carbon isotope studies indicate that the graphite in the Tweefontein and Turfspruit samples represents organic material orig­ inally associated with the footwall sediments. Sulphur isotope determinations on the anhydrite-bearing floor rocks indicate that this phase is clearly of sedimentary origin and was probably derived from an evaporitic unit within the carbonate sequence. This provides firm support for a model of ore genesis that involved the introduction of additional sulphur into the Bushveld magma. Isotope studies on sulphides associated with the banded ironstone and graphite indicate that these units were not the source of additional sulphur. Experimental studies predict, however, that a magma contaminated with iron- and carbon-rich material would have a high sulphur-carrying capacity. Where additional sulphur is available the magma would achieve saturation early in its crystallization history and precipitate an immiscible sulphide phase. Experimental work has also shown that sulphide precipi­ tation can be triggered by the introduction of salic material into a magma close to sulphur saturation. This mechanism probably played a role in the control of the sulphide mineralization in the Turfspruit area."

The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. Laboratory studies have been carried out on acid leaching as a possible route for the extraction of potassium from glauconitic sandstone. Leaching efficiencies with sulphuric, hydrochloric and nitric acids were investigated. The effects on potassium dissolution of temperature, concentration and type of acid, stirring speed and leaching time were also studied. The results show that it is possible to recover 87.5, 93 and 85% potassium with 5 M H2SO4, HCl and HNO3, respectively. During the initial stages of the sulphuric acid leaching process the chemical reaction at the mineral surface is the rate determining step, whereas during the later stages diffusion through the product layer is rate-controlling. Overall, the process follows a mixed-control model that includes both chemical reaction and diffusion. The activation energy for the dissolution of K was found to be in the range 25.79-106 kJ/mol.
