"The South Bay Division of Selco Mining is located fifty-four miles northeast of Ear Falls Ontario on Confederation Lake. The concentrator operates five days a week and processes six hundred tons per day of copper zinc silver sulphide ore. The concentrator is comprised of crushing, grinding, differential flotation, thickening and drying circuits. The major constituents of the concentrator feed are: chalcopyrite 7%, sphalerite 20%, pyrrhotite 3%, pyrite 25 - 30% and felsitic volcanics 40 - 50%. The mine went into production in March 1971 with an anticipated three year life and is now scheduled for closure in the summer of 1981. Recent mine production has been limited to three cut and fill stopes which have widely varying ore grades, therefore mill feeds vary from 0.25 to 4% copper, 3.5 to 27% zinc, 0 to 0.4% lead and 15 to 30% iron.In mid 1977 Selco negotiated a six month rental purchase agreement with Outokumpu Instruments Canada Limited for a five stream analyser system. The Minexan 202 probes were the first Outokumpu probe type analysers installed in Canada although Outokumpus' Courier systems are well known. Installation of the system took place in April 1978 and after numerous hardware faults the six month evaluation began in August. By December it was obvious that the Minexan 202 probes with proportional detectors did not have adequate resolution to determine low copper values in either of the tailings streams. Outokumpu offered to replace the tailings analysers with a new prototype solid state detector probe the following summer. The evaluation on the five Minexan 202 probes continued until August 1979 when the new solid probe was installed. The Minexan S (solid state) probe was evaluated with the three remaining Minexan 202 probes until December 1979 when Selco elected to purchase the system."

"In the Hydrometallurgical processes, the presence of the so-called "crud" is a constant challenge in solvent extraction. Crud is a stable emulsion which forms along the interface between the aqueous and organic phase. The spread is influenced by the following parameters: first, wind blows the dust and impurities into the open sedimentation tanks. Second, the undissolved solids such as sand transported in the PLS causing problems in conjunction with incorrect agitator design.The crud fraction can decisively impact the efficiency of the hydrometallurgical extraction because the phase interface can constitute a large fraction and the sedimentation tanks cannot react flexibly to it. In the downstream process of the series-connected sedimentation tanks, they are thus all contaminated with crud. At the same time, the necessary mass transport is significantly impeded at the phase boundary between organic phase and aqueous phase due to the crud formation.The transfer of the organic phase into the electrolysis cell can result in a "burnout" of the cathode. The carryover of this electrolyte into the extraction can cause problems with the pH regulation. The carry-over of the organic components into the raffinate also leads to contamination of the leaching circuit. The continuous treatment of the crud with a 3-phase decanter centrifuge is extremely effective in combating this problem. This technology splits all three phases from each other and they are consequently continuously separated. All subsequent process steps exhibit a stable, uniform effectiveness. The main advantage for the customer is that fluctuations in the process are eliminated and the organic phase can be recirculated back to the extraction. The recycling of the solvent alone justifies the investment in less than 6 months as examples from South Africa and Chile show.To operate solvent recovery in daily operation fully automated online at the optimum limit, the decanter centrifuge is equipped with a concentration-dependent pond adjustment called DControl® by this means, we can guarantee our customers the maximum possible solvent recovery and minimize the solvent costs in this process step. This system is presented in detail in this paper."

"The Lady Loretta lead-zinc deposit in Northwest Queensland, Australia contains an average of 5.9% lead, 17.1% zinc and 97 g/t silver. Ore mineralization is mostly comprised of fairly complex intergrowths of pyrite, sphalerite and galena. Starting in 1998, Noranda Inc., the major joint venture partner of the project, conducted extensive metallurgical test work, which culminated in July - August 2000 in a series of Pilot Plant tests. A common thread to all the metallurgical work has been the deportment of a large portion of silver into non-payable metallurgical products. Average silver distribution from four Pilot Plants shows a distribution of silver in lead concentrate of 28%, whereas silver in zinc concentrate was 49%, and 23% in the final tails.The consistently poor silver recovery as well as the fairly unusual silver distribution, particularly in zinc concentrate, was considered an issue to be thoroughly investigated. A mineralogical plan was devised to determine if these particular metallurgical results were somewhat related to the nature and mode of occurrence of silver carriers. Work was performed to determine discrete silver-bearing minerals and/or silver contained in solid solution in a suite of commonly occurring sulphides. Ore microscopy, SEM methods, Electron Microprobe and Ion Microprobe analyses were all used to answer these questions, and to find the silver carriers, so a metallurgical plan could be devised to improve silver recovery.INTRODUCTIONPotential economic exploitation of the Lady Loretta deposit in Queensland, Australia is driven by revenue derived from zinc and lead flotation concentrates and co-product silver recovery in lead. "The experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of various process parameters in rotary degassing of aluminum alloy AS5U3G. Degassing was carried out by use of argon inert gas. The flow rate of the gas was investigated in the range of 12 to 21 L/min., 350 to 500 rpm rotor speed, 6 to 12 minutes degassing time, and 755°C to 780°C melt temperature. Degassing efficiency was evaluated through measuring the density of RPT samples. By optimizing the process parameters, RPT sample density was increased up to 2.73 g/cm3, which guaranties the production of high-quality aluminum castings. Tensile strength and elongation were increased considerably by degassing process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows small size and well-distributed microporosity. IntroductionOne of the major problems associated with the casting of aluminum alloys is the formation of gas porosity. Aluminum and its alloys are very susceptible to hydrogen absorption. Because solubility is much lower in solid state than liquid state, hydrogen atoms leave their position during solidification and combine together to form hydrogen molecules. These micrometer- scale cavities, called microporosity, cause the reduction of mechanical properties, particularly strength, ductility, fracture toughness, fatigue resistance, pressure tightness, and corrosion resistance (Laslaz, 1991; Jorstad and Rasmussen, 1993; Sigworth and Wang, 1994; Korasani, 1996; Anson and Gruzleski, 1999; Zhang et al., 2000). To avoid these problems and produce good quality castings, it is necessary to remove hydrogen from the melt. Several methods are available for degassing aluminum melt. One of them is a rotary degassing system using inert gas, e.g. Ar or N2. Various thermodynamic and kinetic factors govern the removal of hydrogen from molten aluminum (Anderson, 1987; Sigworth, 1987; Pignault, 1993; King and Reynolds, 1995). These are some parameters that affect degassing efficiency. Some of them are discussed here and some are examined in this project."

"Bechtel has managed a number of test programs to establish autogenous grinding circuits and size mills for a variety of ores.This paper outlines the procedures whereby bench scale and pilot plant tests are used to select the most efficient circuit to grind the range of ore types likely in the mill feed.Five examples are given. One example traces the development of a pilot plant program; it shows how bench scale Work Indices provide a target for the grinding power requirement of an ore and relates how pilot circuits are changed as a result of interpreting the results from preceding tests. The other four examples relate the interpretation of the test results to provide design data; they illustrate a number of phenomena which have been observed.INTRODUCTIONConventional crushing and grinding circuits can be specified from bench scale test data such as Bond Work Indices. Bond Indices have been correlated to a large number of rod and ball mills and by applying appropriate factors, mills can be sized from the Work Index.For autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding circuits, bench scale tests are not sufficient to be able to specify the circuit and size of the mills for a commercial plant. It is necessary to run a series of pilot plant tests to determine how the ore behaves."

"An attempt to review the recent literature on comminution reveals at once that the subject has many ramifications and that the applications are so diverse that there are very few general statements which can be made.It. seems reasonable to start classification on the basis of size of material as Input to the comminution process. However, we find that this can only be done in a very imprecise manner.The initial step of breaking rock from its natural state of very large pieces in geological formations into sizes suitable for processing is accomplished by blasting. This step in the process has not been ex-amined in this project except to note that great changes have been made during the last decade or so in the explosives used, and in the method of handling them. We should determine what effect changes in mining methods can have on the need for crushing.The second step in the process is usually primary crushing, performed by gyratory or jaw crushers. The largest chunk which can be fed to a jaw crusher depends on the size of the machine, and should be larger than the largest fragment produced in the miring process. It is obvious that the larger the crusher, the less care required in mining to en¬sure the absence of rocks too large to be crushed. The optimum size of crusher to minimize overall cost of mining and reduction is not at all obvious, and no information on this point has come to light in this investigation.It is rather generally accepted that size reduction is most efficiently done in small stages, and that different machines have different opti¬mum size ranges of feed. For example, crushers are preferred for sizes above about 1"", rod mills for the range between 1"" and 0.1"", ball mills are preferred from 0.1""down to perhaps 10 microns, and vibratory mills, or jet mills, below 10 microns."

Cyanide has been used for the recovery of gold since the mid 1800s, but several jurisdictions have already banned its use, and environmental pressures are increasing to finding an alternative. Gold also forms chloride complexes similar to those of cyanide, but the use of chloride has never achieved widespread acceptance. This paper describes a chloride-based flowsheet, wherein the key unit process is the recovery and recycle of chloride ion. It is shown that the chloride-based flowsheet is competitive economically with the conventional cyanide-based flowsheets, and that it has a number of other advantages, particularly environmentally.

"Since late 1980s the research group led by late Professor Andre Robert Laplante at McGill University undertook fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson Concentrator (KC) and developed a sustainable method to correctly estimate gravity recoverable gold (GRG). In the early time a concept of ‘free gold’ was used, it was defined as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, its practical use had declined. Around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson Concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill University. Through more than 10 years’ improvement and optimization, this technique had become a standard method to evaluate GRG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. Until 2006, about 200 GRG tests had been carried out at McGill University for the ores from all over the world. Recently, a modified version of GRG test (short test) with the advantages of reduced processing time and lower cost had been developed for the mundane needs of gold industry.INTRODUCTIONGold gravity recovery has evolved significantly over the past twenty-five years, mainly because of the advent of the Knelson Concentrator (Knelson 1988, 1990, 1992, Laplante 2000). Now, a series of Knelson Concentrators for different applications are manufactured and used in gold industry all over the world (Knelson Concentrators 2004).In 1980s the Knelson Concentrator gained acceptance from mining industry as an effective device for the recovery of gold from grinding circuit. Knelson Concentrator became the obvious choice because of its design features: a relatively long processing time without concentrate discharge (compared to some other centrifuges, such as Falcon Concentrator and Chinese Yunxi Centrifuge at that time), large throughput capacity, treating a wide size range of material, yielding a high grade concentrate with small mass that could easily be smelted. As more and more Knelson Concentrators were accepted in gold industry, mineral processing engineers faced with challenges: what are the separation mechanisms of the Knelson Concentrator? How much gold can be extracted for an ore if a Knelson Concentrator is installed? For answering these questions, a laboratory scale Knelson Concentrator was created."

It is well known in the robotics community that the ability to determine the position of vehicles in real time is a key enabling technology required for automation, traffic management, and to ensure safety in the presence of multiple vehicles. Because of this, the introduction of global positioning systems (GPS) has had a remarkable impact on the surface mining industry, enabling real-time tracking of mobile assets, improved safety, and production optimization. Unfortunately, satellite-based GPS is not available underground. This paper reports on the preliminary results of a study to develop a robust method for globally consistent mapping of large-scale underground mine environments. We believe that this may additionally become the first step towards the development of a novel underground positioning technology. Presented are preliminary results from data collected at two underground mines using an Atlas Copco ST14 LHD machine.

"IRON ORE was first smelted in Canada about the year 1736 at Les Forges, Quebec -a most appropriate name for such a historic locale. During these early years of the 18th, 19th, and first quarter of this century, about six million tons of ore were mined and employed in the manufacture of items ranging all the way from kettles, stoves, and cannon for the early settlers to weapons of war for the allied armies of World War I.But this symposium on iron ore is not concerned with this early period. Instead, it is concerned with the iron ore industry of today -an industry which will soon be-come one of the two most valuable mineral industries in Canada.The subject in its broad geographic and economic aspects will be introduced by Mr. Buck; Dr. Harrison will describe the geology and origin of the principal iron ore deposits; Dr. Downes will go into beneficiation as it applies to iron ores; and Mr. Gertsman will discuss primary processing. The symposium will not deal with the steel end of the industry, because that phase itself could well form the subject of a symposium."

"Abstract - The Burnt Timber gold deposit is located in the Paleoproterozoic Lynn Lake greenstone belt of the Trans-Hudson Orogen, Manitoba. The deposit occurs along the Johnson shear zone, and is hosted by enriched and depleted tholeiitic volcanic arc basalts cut by feldspar porphyry dikes. The Johnson shear zone is a regional, belt-parallel structure characterized by the intensification of the regional S2 foliation. At the Burnt Timber deposit, S2 is folded by centimeter- to meter-scale, Z-shaped, F3 chevron folds that have an axial planar S3 crenulation cleavage. Within the 20 to 30 m-wide core zone of the shear zone, S2 and F3 are transposed parallel to S3 and the volcanic rocks are strongly sheared parallel to S3. The presence of a steeply plunging stretching lineation, together with dextral shear sense indicators along both S2 and S3 on horizontal surfaces, suggest that the Johnson shear zone is a dextral transpression zone. Gold was introduced in pyritic, biotitic, and carbonatized mafic volcanic rocks along the core of the shear zone. Mylonitic mafic volcanic rocks contain localized high-grade zones (=10 g/t Au) that differ from wider carbonatized, low-grade zones (<3 g/t Au) by the presence of deformed gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins. High-grade zones are also associated with swarms of quartz-pyrite veins that cut across sericitized and carbonatized feldspar porphyry dikes, which acted as brittle, competent bodies during shearing. Gold deposition in the high-grade zones was controlled by the channeling of hydrothermal fluid along the core of the shear zone during shearing of the volcanic rocks, and brittle fracturing of the porphyry dikes. Sommaire - Le gîte aurifère de Burnt Timber est situé dans la ceinture de roches vertes Paléoprotérozoïque de Lynn Lake dans l’orogène Trans-Hudsonien, au Manitoba. Ce gîte est situé le long de la zone de cisaillement de Johnson et est encaissé dans des basaltes tholéiitiques d’arc enrichis et appauvris recoupés par des dykes porphyriques. La zone de cisaillement de Johnson est une structure régionale parallèle à la ceinture de Lynn Lake caractérisée par une intensité accrue de la foliation régionale S2. Au gîte de Burnt Timber, S2 est affectée par un plissement F3 en chevrons en Z d’échelle centimétrique à métrique associé à un clivage de crénulation de plan axial S3. Dans la zone centrale de 20 à 30 m de largeur au sein de la zone de cisaillement, S2 et F3 sont transposés parallèlement à S3 et les roches volcaniques sont fortement cisaillées le long de S3. La présence conjointe d’une linéation d’étirement à forte plongée et d’indicateurs cinématiques dextres sur les surfaces horizontales S2 et S3 suggère que la zone de cisaillement de Johnson est une zone transpressive dextre. L’or a été mis en place dans des volcanites mafiques altérées en pyrite, en biotite, et en carbonate au coeur de la zone de cisaillement. Les roches volcaniques mylonitiques présentent des zones aurifères locales à haute teneur (=10 g/t Au) qui diffèrent des zones à basse teneur (<3 g/t Au) par la présence de veines de quartz et de pyrite aurifère. Des zones à haute teneur associées à des essaims de veinules de quartz et de pyrite sont aussi notées dans des dykes porphyriques à plagioclase altérés en séricite et en carbonates; ces dykes se sont comportés comme des corps compétents durant le cisaillement. La déposition de l’or dans le zones à haute teneur a été contrôlée par la circulation du fluide hydrothermal au coeur de la zone de cisaillement durant la déformation des roches volcaniques et la fracturation des dykes porphyriques."

Process Design and Change Management for Successful Deployment of Technology in Mining Over the last 30 years Canada has been successful in developing but not deploying hardrockmining automation. Our opinion is that the current lack of R&D investment and implementation capacity places Canada at risk as a future global mining leader A white elephant A burdensome possession; creating more trouble than it is worth. White (albino) elephants were regarded as holy in ancient times in Thailand and other Asian countries. Keeping a white elephant was a very expensive undertaking, since the owner had to provide the elephant with special food and provide access for people who wanted to worship it. If a Thai King became dissatisfied with a subordinate, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient.

The mining sector is a major economic driver for Canadian, and British Columbian communities. In parallel strong commitments have been made by industry to the well-being and sustainability of associated communities. However, these dimensions are the least understood. Especially lacking are focused regional investigations that compare the well-being and sustainability of communities dependent on different resources sectors. It is hypothesized that this type of comparative analysis will help to foster a greater understanding of what makes a resource or mining community healthy and sustainable. This paper describes research that examined community-level indicators associated with well-being (e.g. education, income and employment) and sustainability (e.g. economic diversity). The indicators were derived from Canadian Census data for 31 British Columbia resource-based communities (with a focus on mining) during a period of time (1991 to 2001) when resource sectors experienced an economic downturn. Our findings identify that during this decade, mining communities differed significantly from other resource-based communities, and comparative analysis of census derived indictors illuminate challenges that mining communities in British Columbia face with respect to wellbeing and sustainability (such as economic diversity, unemployment, and population loss). To contribute to the mining sector?s efforts towards meeting their commitments to communities, this paper concludes by proposing strategic opportunities aimed at the enhancement of mining community sustainability for policy-makers, communities, and the mining industry to consider.

"10.1. INTRODUCTIONDefinitions are a necessary part of every agreement. Their purposes are to assist the reader in reading and understanding an agreement and to attempt to avert potential confusion and, therefore, disputes. In some circumstances, they may be critical in deciding a dispute. As they are often substantive, they should not be treated lightly.It is far easier and less confusing for a reader to read “the Company” or “the Recipient” than to be faced with “the party of the First Part”, or to see the “Jones Property” than “that part of the property hereinbefore described in paragraph 1.01 hereof”. It is also advisable not to use “-ee” and “- or”, as in payee and payor.One thing must always be remembered: once a word has been defined in an agreement, it will always have the defined meaning unless the contrary is clearly indicated or is required to make sense of a provision.2 It can be confusing for a reader if commonly used words are defined in other than ordinary terms. Unique words that will stand out in the text are more likely to be recognized as having special meaning. It is also good practice to identify defined terms by capitalizing them in the text of the agreement. Boldfacing of definitions is also sometimes used for this purpose but, as boldfacing is not easily identified in handwritten revisions, it can be missed in the press of negotiations, especially when several typists are involved. Lack of consistency in identifying defined terms is not a fatal mistake, but it can create confusion, especially if the reader is new to the agreement or is reading it in a highly technical manner, such as when there is a dispute.If definitions used in the main text also apply to a schedule, they need not be included in both. Omitting them from the schedule makes the agreement look shorter, which to some people is a benefit. If definitions are not repeated, make certain that the schedule clearly indicates that words defined in the main text have the same defined meanings in the schedule3 and are clearly identified as defined words. In considering whether or not to repeat in a royalty schedule definitions appearing in the agreement proper, think of definitions as an aid and a reminder to the reader. Repeating them will help a reader, if only by saving the nuisance of remembering where to find them in the main text and constantly turning to it. All the definitions needed to read the schedule will be right there, so that the schedule is a self-contained document. Just make certain that, if you do repeat a definition, you repeat it in identical terms. If you have to change any defined term to make it fit the royalty provisions, use a different word or phrase as the defined term to warn the reader that he is dealing with a different concept.4"

AT the Eagle mine, near Gilman, Colorado, where the Empire Zinc Company have installed an underground mill, transportation problems were comparatively simple. A railway siding on the Denver and Rio Grande railway is equipped with an unloading dock or platform at the portal of their service incline adit to the mill. This 18-degree incline is approximately 600 feet long from the unloading track to the head of the mill skipway. For the Big Missouri mill, upwards of 2,500 tons of material and equipment had to be trucked from tidewater at Stewart, B.C., a distance of 21 miles to the Big Missouri camp at elevation 2,800. From that point, this freight had to be moved either over or through the Big Missouri ridge, rising to elevation 3,450, to its final location 800 feet from the surface between elevations 2,150 and 2,350. Immediately after leaving the government dock at Stewart, the road crosses the International boundary line into Hyder, Alaska, and then follows a water grade for eleven miles along the lower stretches of the Salmon river. leaving the river, the road climbs for two miles before crossing back into British Columbia territory at Silver Heights, and then continues for another mile and a half to where the Big Missouri road branches off from the main road to the Premier mine. For a distance of four miles from the junction of the roads, the Missouri road is very narrow, with many sharp curves and with irregular up and down pitches and grades up to 25 per cent until it reaches the Summit. From there on, a fairly easy grade leads a mile and a half to the end of the road on Joker Plats. In winter, the last stretch of road is subject to heavy snow drifting, especially through a narrow funnel-shaped gulch, known as &apos;The Gap&apos;, where the snow may pile up to a depth of over twenty feet.

"This paper deals with the reconciliation of open stope performance at Olympic Dam, South Australia, with a focus on stope stability, recovery, and operational aspects of stope reconciliation in relation to the expected or planned stope design. The observed stope performance is inconsistent with the equivalent linear overbreak sloughing criteria for assessing the performance of large open stopes. The aim is to investigate new stope performance criteria using quantitative (overbreak, underbreak, maximum depth of wall failure) and qualitative (stope productivity, observed fragmentation) information that correlates with the observed stope behaviour, providing a process for improving future stope designs.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article traite de la réconciliation de la performance des chambres ouvertes à Olympic Dam, Australie du Sud, en ciblant la stabilité des chambres, la récupération et les aspects opérationnels de la réconciliation des chambres par rapport à la conception attendue ou planifiée des chambres. La performance observée des chambres ne concorde pas avec les critères d’épaisseur équivalente du bris hors profil pour évaluer la performance de grandes chambres ouvertes. "The Cortez SAG mill liner design was recently modified to improve the mill operating energy efficiency. In addition to the expected benefits, the design change unexpectedly played a significant role of verifying the proposed grinding circuit expansion for the Cortez Hills project as well as illustrating current SAG mill bottlenecks. This paper will discuss the evaluation that addressed operator and maintenance observations, historical PLC data, and “crash stop” observations to calculate charge motion, packing between lifters, and slurry transport through grate and pulp lifters. The performance of the new shell and discharge end liner design will also be discussed as well as their role in the possible grinding circuit expansion.INTRODUCTIONCortez Gold Mines commenced operation in 1969 with its Mill #1 rated at a nominal 2,000 tons per day. Mill #1 was a conventional rod mill/ball mill circuit followed by an 8-stage CIP circuit. In the early 1990s the Pipeline deposit was discovered and subsequently Mill #2 was built to process the increased ore volume. Mill #2, commissioned by mid-1997, was a nominal 10,000 tons per day SABC circuit followed by an 8-stage CIL circuit for oxide gold ore. Operating and commissioning details of this plant have been published elsewhere (Powell, 1998). By late 1998, there was not enough ore volume to support both mills so the smaller, higher operating cost Mill #1 was put under its current care-and-maintenance status. A simplified flowsheet of the current mill is shown in Figure 1."

Mesoporous gold sponge has the unique property of being both metallic and highly resistant to oxidation. It has potential application in catalysis, in bio-sensors, in optical coatings, in analytical chemistry and, as we show here, as the basis for a new kind of ultra-capacitor. Due to the cost of gold, the most probable niche for a gold-based ultra-capacitor would be in the high-power/high-energy regime, a region where gold would compete with devices based on RuO2. A high internal resistance limits the power that can be usefully drawn from existing carbon-based ultra-capacitors, and that this problem can potentially be overcome by gold-based devices. A simple proof-of-concept ultra-capacitor based on mesoporous gold is described and its behaviour during charge and discharge cycles examined. In this work a step change in the input or output voltage of the device was used as the controlling parameter. There was also a residual faradaic current resulting from traces of undissolved aluminium left over from the AuAl2 precursor used to make the sponge, and some charge storage due to polarization of the solution. Deconvolution of these three effects was not entirely accomplished, but an ostensible capacitance of about 7 to 14 mF/g Au was demonstrated. Further improvement from these early results seems likely.

"Since the mid fifty's, worlwide pellet production capacity has constantly risen (Fig. 1, Ref. 1 l. There was however at that time no real incentive to decrease production costs but only to produce as many pellets as possible. State of things changed with the iron and steel market recession, starting in 1975, and is currently leading producers to improve pellet quality and to reduce fuel and power consumption.At the Port-Cartier pellet plant, the energy needed for the induration of pellets ranks first in overall operating costs. An important step was made when starting admixing coke breeze in 1980. Oil prices justified the use of coke breeze as a direct replacement in terms of dollar/ton, however, while gaining expertise in using solid fuel a significant decrease in energy consumption was observed (Fig. 2, Ref. 2).In 1985, the ""Centre de Recherches minérales"" was commissioned to undertake research work to investigate the effects of further increasing coke addition to the pellet mix. The positive results of that work led to a 1,5% coke addition plant trial during the fall of 1985. Both laboratory and industrial results are discussed in this paper."
