Many non-commercial operators are currently faced with the need to operate fleets of legacy gas turbine engines. How long such engines can be kept in service safely, without replacing a significant portion of their aging structural components, has become a growing concern to engine life-cycle managers, due to uncertainties in the remaining lives of critical components of these engines. This paper describes the application of the damage tolerance methodology to predict safe inspection intervals (SII) for critical components of gas turbine engines, using components of a turboprop engine for a transport aircraft as examples. High temperature components of this engine are made of advanced aerospace alloys. The methods of predicting three-dimensional fatigue crack growth at the critical location of turbine discs and spacers using both commercial and in-house developed algorithms are presented. Sensitivity analyses are performed to determine the effect of variations in material parameters on the predicted safe inspection intervals. In addition, spin rig tests performed for both turbine discs and spacers are described. Finally, crack growth rates predicted by numerical analyses are compared to those obtained from spin rig testing and the damage tolerance of the turbine components is assessed.

Sossego Mine was the first Vale SAG mill operation to process copper-gold ore. It is located in the state of Para, in the south-eastern Amazon region of Brazil. In the first six years of continuous operation, Vale investigated different alternatives for improving circuit performance by investigating operating conditions, mainly focusing on the SAG mill. Today, after a steady increase over five years the annual production rate seems to have stabilized. It is hoped this work will show how the SAG operating practice have been perfected with time and as new data are collected. Historical data of mill grind-outs and crash stops helped create operation curves depending on the ball charge volume and total charge volume. Also noted were impacts on throughput due to the effect of reducing liner weight and the ore type characteristics.

SHERRITT GORDON Mines Limited annually produce 300,-000 pounds of pure cobalt by processing a nickel-cobalt-copper-iron sulphide ore which is mined at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The ore (containing 0.04 per cent Co) is •concentrated to give a concentrate containing l 1-12 per cent nickel, about 2.0 per cent .copper, and 0.25-0.35 per cent cobalt, which is treated at the Refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The concentrate is leached in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulphate using compressed air as the oxidant. After filtration the leach solution contains, besides nickel and cobalt, copper ammines, sulpharnates and salts of various thionic acids. The copper is removed by precipitation as sulphide and the sulphur compounds converted to ammonium sulphate by a combined oxidation and hydrolysis treatment. The purified solution •Containing about 45 gpl of nickel and 1 gpl of cobalt is treated with gaseous hydrogen under pressure at 350°F to precipitate metallic nickel powder, the precipitation 'being terminated when the nickel content of the solution is about 0.8-1 gpl. "The Marvast monazite deposit is located 35 kilometres south - southwest of Marvast in Yazd province of Iran. A representative sample weighing approximately 10 tons was prepared to study the amenability of the ore to physical beneficiation. The size fraction of +1000 µm was removed due to low monazite content and the –1000 µm size fraction was concentrated by the gravity-classification-magnetic methods. According to the results of sample characterization, the representative sample contains 220 ppm REO that is contained in monazite. It was concentrated to 41.5% REO by the above mentioned methods. The recovery of REO in the monazite concentrate was 41.5%.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements are critical metals in many countries (Gupta, 2005; UK Geological Survey, 2011). Increasing application of these metals in hi-tech industries and price fluctuation caused by Chinese production policy has led other countries to focus on their local resources (UK Geological Survey, 2011). In this case, Iran is not an exception.REE mineralization in Iran is mainly located in the central zone. Regarding the exploration data, these deposits are divided into two categories. The first group is iron ore deposits in which the REE are carried by phosphate minerals. The other group is placer deposits where monazite is the major mineral of the deposit. "While the uniaxial compressive strength of rock has been extensively investigated, the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength is relatively unexplored. This paper studies on 1865 statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6, which located in the Middle Jurassic of Shaximiao formation. The research focuses on the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength. The statistical data are categorized and quantified in order to ascertain the softening properties of sandstone and sandy mudstone. The findings suggest that the saturation compressive strength is significant effected by its natural compressive strength, and an empirical formula is introduced to explain the relation. These findings have implications for researchers and engineer who concerned with Chongqing rail transit construction.INTRODUCTIONIn the engineering construction and surrounding rock classification, the uniaxial compressive strength index (Ministry of Water Conservancy, 1995; Ministry of Railways, 1999) is one of the essential parameters of rock mass. Usually, there are two types of the uniaxial compressive strength index, natural and saturation compressive strength, and the ratio of them is the softening coefficient. Most of the previous studies on rock strength had focused on the influence factors (Liu et al., 2008; Liu et al., 1998; Liu et al., 2013; Wang, 2013; Zhang et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2010; Zeng & Lin, 2003) with experiment and in-situ tests. But few publications that reports a long and formal research project on the relationship between natural and saturation compressive strength. In order to figure out this issue, this study investigated the distribution of Solidity Classification of Rock Mass and softening coefficient based on the statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6. The mining industry has already become highly technical in all its branches and this has brought about specialization in mining engineering. Increasing demand for mineral products, exhaustion of high-grade or easily worked deposits, and narrowing of the fields for exploration and development, are forcing mines to greater depth and to working material of lower grade and more complex composition. The Robinson Deep at its Turf shaft has reached a depth of 7,640 feet and expects to go to 8,500 feet; Miami Copper, under normal market conditions, profitably mines ore running only 16 pounds of copper to the ton; Alaska Juneau is making a profit on ore running about $1.15 per ton in gold; and many mines are handling ores of an extremely complex nature. In each case, the success of these operations has depended upon the application of sound scientific principles and good business methods to the problems involved. It may be safely assumed that mining at great depth and the exploitation of low-grade, or complex, ores will become more and more important as time goes on, and this means that greater and greater demands will be made upon the technical skill and business ability of the mining engineer. To meet this condition, the more or less haphazard methods of training the young engineer that have prevailed in the past will have to be replaced by a careful and well-ordered system of engineer-training. Upon the industry and the older mining engineer falls the duty of providing means to assist the deserving student to prepare himself properly to meet the increased demands that are falling upon his profession. Consideration of the training of the mining engineer involves a decision as to what constitutes his field of usefulness. Technical control of methods and processes obviously falls upon the engineer, but there are still many who doubt his usefulness in the executive field, particularly in positions involving close contact with the men and work. Many engineers have failed as shift-boss or foreman, but this has been generally due to fault in the management in using men who were temperamentally unfit to lead others or who lacked the necessary preliminary training.

"Oxygen is essential in gold cyanidation. It is supplied to the leaching media by sparging oxygen or compressed air into the cyanidation tank. The rate of oxygen transfer is critical to achieve the desired oxygen concentration in solution.The performance of a novel device for gas sparging recently developed at McGill University is compared to the mass transfer characteristics of the two spargers most used in the gold industry: the four lance configuration and the inverted cone. The distribution of gas and the kinetics of oxygen desorption of the three types of spargers was studied in a 140 litre tank. The oxygen dissolution of the new device is three to five times faster than the other spargers. This could increase the leaching rate and/or decrease the cyanide and oxygen consumption.IntroductionIn hydrometallurgical processing, it is often necessary to bubble gas through a pulp to carry out the wanted reactions. The gas can act to agitate the pulp and it can also supply reactant. The rates of the reactions which require a reactant supplied by the gas are often dependent on the rates of mass transfer from the gas to the solution.A common example of this is gold cyanidation which requires oxygen for gold dissolution. Since the gold containing slurry is rich in other oxygen consuming substances (sulphide like pyrrhotite), it is important to provide enough oxygen to allow complete gold dissolution within the residence time of the cyanidation reactors. It has been demonstrated that the rate of gold dissolution is directly proportional to the dissolved oxygen concentration of the pulp which in turn is proportional to the oxygen partial pressure in the bubble 1 2 3. Improving the rate of mass transfer of oxygen increases the dissolved oxygen concentration of the slurry and therefore improves the rate of the reaction.The rate of mass transfer from a bubble to its surrounding solution increases with decreasing bubble size and increasing gas bubble residence time which in turn increases with decreasing bubble size. The generation and dispersion of small bubbles is thus critical to achieving high rates of mass transfer. Different configurations and devices used to inject gas have different effects on the bubble size and the residence time, influencing the overall rate of mass transfer. Therefore better mass transfer can be achieved by adopting a more efficient method.The methods tested in this report are the four lance configuration (wall spargers), the inverted cone and a new device, designated HCD. The wall spargers and the inverted cone are used widely in the industry today."

Selective separation of minerals from complex sulphide ores is a challenging task and it is often difficult to get commercially acceptable individual concentrates by conventional selective flotation using inorganic collector reagents. Microbially-induced mineral beneficiation has proved to be more effective, economically viable and an environmentally benign process for the effective separation of various minerals. Applications of microbially-induced mineral beneficiation are demonstrated in this paper with respect to beneficiation of complex multimetal sulfides. The role of adapted microorganisms and bioreagents in the beneficiation of complex sulphide minerals are also illustrated.

THE Exshaw formation is a thin but very persistent black shale unit generally well exposed along the easterly scarp faces of the fault blocks comprising tl1e front ranges of the Rocky mountains. It is over lain by the Mississippian Banff shales and silty shales and underlain by the massive Palliser Limestone formation of late Devonian age. The Exshaw continues eastward under the plains of Alberta and on into Saskatchewan, with little change until it reaches the surface of the Palaeozoic-Mesozoic unconformity. During the summer of 1953, the writer was working- with a field party under Dr. J. L. Usher in the front ranges of the Alberta Rocky mountains. This party, sent out by the Mobiloil Company, conducted a geological survey of Devonian rocks between the towns of Banff and Jasper. The writer helped to describe and map these Devonian rocks and obtained first-hand information concerning the Exshaw shale and its relationship to the underlying and overlying sediments. Additional information was obtained from reference material and from a number of geologists whom the writer has consulted. Grateful acknowledgment is offered to them, to the Mobiloil Company for releasing field information, and to F. W. Beales and W. P. Hancock who helped edit the original paper for publication. Information from areas north and smith of that studied and from bore holes on the prairies is referred to. Localities mentioned may be found in Figure 1.

The results of complex processing sulphide copper ore and advantages of recovery of copper by vat and heap leaching, sorption, cementation and electrolytic solutions processing and utilization of waste material after heap leaching of copper for production of building materials were investigated. The combined chemical solvents with the additives of oxidizing agents are developed at the KazNTU. The solvents are inorganic or organic chemical reagents, which form complexes of Cu, Au, Ag, Pt, Ni, Sr, Co etc. Recovery of non-ferrous metals from solutions and purification of industrial waste waters is carried out on the base of using new synthetic and natural sorbents (from local raw materials) which are able to bind ions in both cationic and anionic forms depending on type of ligands and external conditions. Optimum parameters of copper sorption were determined. The developed wasteless technologies of copper extraction from sulphide ores with usage of new non-toxic solvents and accessible sorbents with full recycling of water are tested in pilot scale heap leaching, and are recommended as the ecological, economical and practical alternative to traditional methods.

"Abstract- The Legris Lake Complex is a northeast-trending, 7.3 km long by 3.5 km wide, maficultramafic intrusive complex located in the western Wabigoon Subprovince of the Archean Superior Province. It is one of a series of mafic-ultramafic igneous complexes, the most notable of which is the Lac des Iles Complex, host to Canada’s only producing Pd mine with reserves of 93.5 Mt grading 1.53 g/t Pd as of December 2001 (North American Palladium Ltd., Annual Report 2001). Cu-Ni- PGE mineralization was first discovered in the Legris Lake Complex by a local prospector late in 1999. Shortly thereafter, the property was jointly optioned by Avalon Ventures Ltd. and Starcore Resources Ltd., who continue to discover significant Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization.One of the most notable features of the Legris Lake Complex is the occurrence of extensive brecciation caused by multiple injections of volatile-rich magma. The Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization is hosted by leucogabbro within a 2 km long by 600 m wide, highly brecciated area in the northwestern area of the Complex. The mineralized rocks contain disseminated to blebby sulfides (1 to 5 vol.%), comprising chalcopyrite + pyrite ± pyrrhotite + millerite ± pentlandite, typically surrounded by epidote. The majority of the Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization displays low ratios of Pt/Pd (~0.20) and high ratios of Cu/Ni (~2.9), which are similar to those of the Lac des Iles and the River Valley mafic-ultramafic complexes. The lithologies in Legris Lake Complex bear similarities to the heterolithic gabbro of the Twilight and Roby Zone deposits at the nearby Lac des Iles mine. However, the mineralization at Legris Lake, which is restricted to leucogabbro overlying unmineralized clinopyroxenite, is similar to that of stratiform deposits such as the Stillwater and Munni Munni complexes. The mineralization at Legris Lake is best explained by the late-stage, immiscible separation of a sulfide melt from volatile-rich parental magmas and the subsequent minor redistribution of metals by deuteric fluids."

TODAY, man uses, at will, the land, the water, and the air to transport himself and his goods everywhere across the face of the world. He no longer thinks with wonder of the magic of conquering these elements - he takes his mastery of them for granted. He is, however, constantly striving to squeeze more and more efficiency from each mode of transport. Man's first method of transporting himself and his goods was, obviously, himself; then he acquired his first beast of burden - woman. Most other two-legged female animals carried their young around clinging to their fur. Human mothers were, generally speaking, furless and their offspring less 'Prehensile, and so slings and other trappings were invented to carry young children. Man's inventive genius soon adopted these devices for carrying other burdens, and for countless centuries woman carried all in order that man could walk unencumbered except by his weapons. Later other ?beasts of burden were trained and used, including dogs, horses, oxen, camels, etc. Man also discovered quite early that he could drag along the ground more than he could carry on his back.

"Aerial surveys of the open pits have been conducted regularly at Lake Asbestos of Quebec, Ltd. -a subsidiary of American Smelting and Re-fining Company -since 1958. Ground controls are supplied by Lake Asbestos, and a topographic map of the pits at a scale of 1 in. to 50 ft., with 2-foot contour intervals, is obtained by aerial photography. The information from the topographic map is then transferred by the Lake Asbestos engineering staff to sections from which the volumes removed are calculated. Considering the size and complexity of the operation, this system has proved to be the cheapest, fastest and most accurate way of determining the quantities of rock and overburden removed. More than 11,000,000 tons of ore and waste are mined each year in three different pits. Further-more, the nature, shape and extent of the orebodies make it necessary to mine on many (up to eight) benches of a pit during a single year. In addition, there are sections of the pits where it is impossible or un-safe to survey the crest of some benches by standard ground methods. For these reasons, the tonnages obtained by truck count are checked and adjusted by aerial survey. These surveys are now taking place every six months. With this system, it is possible for a two-man surveying crew to look after all field work in the mine area."

Real time measurement of wear and corrosion provides crucial information needed to determine an optimal schedule for corrective maintenance and is a powerful tool to maximise equipment availability and reliability. It also leads to savings from optimized spare parts handling and helps to avoid costs of accidents and their negative impact on safety and the environment. This paper presents the technology of ?painted-on? ultrasonic transducers that can be integrated to structures and accurately measure the remaining thickness and therefore determine wear or corrosion losses. These transducers have a small footprint, a performance comparable to other commercially available ultrasonic transducers and can sustain temperatures as high as 400ºC. The application of this technology to mining equipments and its potential benefits are discussed.

"Johnson Matthey has developed the first diesel particulate filter (DPF) for underground mining that controls particulate matter (PM) at the same time as maintaining emissions of NO2 at or below engine baseline levels. DPF technology is critical for controlling PM which is classified as a carcinogen, but passively regenerating systems rely on the use of oxidation catalysts that can potentially increase NO2 emissions. This paper reviews the development of low-NO2 PM control technology and the results from testing this technology underground on diesel mining equipment. KEYWORDS Decomposition catalyst, Diesel particulate filter (DPF), Diesel particulate matter, Mining Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®), NO2, SCR INTRODUCTION The introduction of diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology on heavy duty diesel (HDD) engines has been an important step towards addressing the clean air and health concerns for mining companies. Control of diesel particulate matter (PM) emitted from diesel engines is already being implemented for on- and off-road vehicles, and similar legislation is being prepared for mining equipment. In addition to PM, the diesel emission control strategies (DECS) also reduce carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). Some DECS control oxides of nitrogen, or NOx, which is composed of NO and NO2. Johnson Matthey has led the development of emission control technologies for diesel engines for almost 30 years. Over the last ten years alone JM has supplied over 3 million Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®) DPF systems for on-road vehicles, and over 200,000 systems for off-road vehicles. The patented CRT technology combines a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) with a DPF to effectively trap harmful PM from diesel exhaust, while removing CO and HC. The DOC converts part of the engine NOx to NO2, which reacts with the trapped soot to regenerate the filter. As engines become more fuel efficient, less waste heat enters the exhaust. This can be a disadvantage for after-treatment systems as it leads to lower catalyst operating temperatures. The CRT system regenerates passively, without addition of heat, at temperatures that are typical of diesel engine exhaust. JM recently launched the Mining CRT system which integrates CRT technology with NO2 abatement to reduce PM and tailpipe NO2 from underground diesel mining equipment. This is the first technology proven to control both PM and NO2 emissions for a cleaner, healthier working environment. The Mining CRT is also cost-effective compared to other technologies."

The probability of making an exploration discovery in Canada can be calculated from Derry's (1970) data on exploration expenditures and number of discoveries over the last nineteen years. Considering an average exploration "try" to be $30,000, the probability of a discovery with one try has decreased tenfold from about 0.01 in 1951 to 0.001 in 1969. A plot of these probabilities can be extrapolated to the future, giving a 1969-71 three-year average probability of 0.00096 with 90 per cent confidence limits of 0.00042 and 0.00153. Using this probability, various calculations can be made, such as (1) the probability of making at least one discovery for any given exploration expenditure, (2) the probability of ultimate ruin or survival of the exploration investment process and (3) the expected value of an exploration investment. There is a critical minimum amount per discovery that must be re-invested in exploration, no matter how large the original investment is, for exploration to survive at all in the long run. Currently, this critical minimum is $31,200,000 with 90 per cent confidence limits of $19,600,000 and $71,400,000.

Twenty-five years ago mining engineering in Canada was not a profession. To-day the members of the mining fraternity can fairly claim for 10themselves the professional status. If their pretension is not fully warranted by fact it is not for lack of any technical attainment or service to the public but by reason merely of their neglect to cultivate the cohesion and consciousness that are the outward and visible signs of a professional body. This paper is an attempt, first to sketch briefly the course of the events during the past thirty-five years that have resulted in organizing the mining industry of this country in its present form; then to notice the principal features of the professional organization of this day; and finally to point out that an important part of the work of the mining engineer remains in the state of chaos that characterized the whole of it three or four decades ago, and to suggest a remedy. Thirty years ago there came a great wave of interest in mining in Canada, based principally upon the discovery of gold-quartz and gold-copper throughout wide areas in Nova Scotia, Ontario and British Columbia.

The Pembina Cardium pool is a low permeability, stratified, solution-gas drive reservoir. Water-flooding has proven to be an effective means of pressure maintenance for all areas of the pool in which an economic rate of water injection can be maintained. The majority of water injection wells in the pool are converted oil well~ with capacities greater than 100 millidarcy-feet. If the average injection rate per unit of capacity can be in-creased the lower capacity areas of the pool can be economically flooded. Theory, laboratory work, and two . early miscible-flooding projects with-in the pool suggested that average water injection rates for converted wells could be increased two to three-fold by the initial injection of natural gas liquids and natural gas.
