"IntroductionMANITOBA'S first recoverable oil was from the California Standard Daly 15-18 well in Lsd. 15, Sec. 18, Twp. 10, Range 27, W.P.M., completed early in 1951. This well also gave the first indications of commercial production in the Williston basin, which is centred in North Dakota and extends into southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba. Subsequent drilling in the Manitoba portion of the basin has revealed the presence of oil in more or less commercial quantities at various points in an area approximately four townships in width and eleven townships in length.Although completions are becoming fairlly widespread in the area,, the greatest activity is in the Virden district, with the focal point in the Daly field, approximately eight miles west •of Virden. This paper will deal with the various techniques used in the Daly field, where •completion problems have •been unusually troublesome. Techniques evolved there have already been used with success at other points in southwestern Manitoba.Daly FieldGeneralTo date, all production has been from the Mississippian limestone, which is encountered •at depths ranging from 2,300 to 2,500 feet. Pay thickness is •of the order of 100 feet. Core analyses indicate average porosity .of about 9 per cent but permeabilities, for the most part, are extremely low."

The commercial carbonate industry of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, began about eighty years ago with the opening of the Sydney steel plant. Significant carbonate deposits are confined to the Precambrian George River Grav" and the Mississippian Windsor Group. George River Group carbonates are thought to have formed as part of a stable platformal sequence. They are crystalline and lie within a dominantly quartzitic sequence. Of the four major sites for George River carbonates on the island, the most commercially promising are the dolomite at Kelly Cove and the limestone and dolomite at Glencoe. Kelly Cove dolomite has good potential for metallurgical, agricultural and fettling purposes; reserves approach 13.6 million tonnes. Windsor Group carbonates were deposited as marine sediments in basins formed by pre-Carboniferous fault blocks. Windsor dolomite reserves at Stoney Creek are only fractionally retrievable and hence are of little economic value. The Windsor Group's Irish Cove limestone has been quarried on a large scale since 1964; no undeveloped commercial deposits, however, remain in the group.

Nickel oxide granules formed by pyrohydrolysis of a chloride solution, were reduced in hydrogen. Below 400 °C, an incubation period was observed, followed by very slow reduction. In the temperature range from 400 to 600 °C, the rate of reduction increased with increasing temperature and increasing hydrogen pressure. Microscopic analysis showed that in this temperature range the reaction followed the shrinking core model. Above 600 °C, the reduction rate decreased noticeably before suddenly becoming very fast at and above 950 °C. Microscopy showed inner bands of metallization inside the outer metallic rim, indicating partial blockage of the interface between the reacted and un-reacted NiO core. At these temperatures, particle agglomeration and sintering were also found to take place. Surface segregation of sulphur may account for the slow down in reduction rate above 600 °C. From an industrial point of view, reduction should be carried out from 550 to 600 °C with as high a concentration of hydrogen as possible. If sintering and agglomeration are not of any concerns, reduction can be carried extremely fast at about 1000 °C.

Since the late 1800s, copper-nickel ores have been mined and smelted in the Sudbury area. The Canadian Copper Company, the Copper Cliff ancestor of Inco Limited, commenced operations with a blast furnace smelter in 1888. Coal-fired reverberatory furnaces were added in 1911 and multihearth roasters in 1914. The blast and reverberatory furnaces smelted, respectively, coppernickel ores and ore fines until 1930, when a milling process and plant began operating to concentrate and separate the minerals of these two metals. Two reasons for this delay were: (1) the availability of high grade ores suitable for direct smelting; and (2) the difficulties in making the copper-nickel separation. The Mond Nickel Company, however, practiced flotation at its Coniston Smelter site from 1914 to 1930. A bulk concentrate containing six per cent copper and five per cent nickel was recovered from ore of 1.6 per cent each of copper and nickel. Gravity (table) and magnetic concentrates were also produced. Inco Limited (then The International Nickel Company) began laboratory-scale flotation tests on its ores in 1918. This work led, ultimately (in 1930), to the construction of the 7500 tonne-per-day Copper Cliff Mill, designed to recover separate copper and nickel concentrates. Its capacity was expanded to 11000 tpd in 1936, to 18 000 in 1940, and to 27 000 in 1942. Since 1971 it has operated to process only the bulk flotation products from other mills to yield individual nickel and copper concentrates.

"The effect of the copper and magnesium contents and quenching rate during quenching on the age hardening behavior of 2000 series aluminum alloys was investigated. For the higher copper-containing specimens as conventional alloys, like AA2024, precipitation of the stable phases increased as the quenching rate decreased under the as-quenched conditions. The maximum hardness after the artificial aging of air cooled(AC) specimens was much lower than that of the water quenched(WQ)specimens. On the other hand, for the lower copper-containing specimens, coarse precipitation did not increase even in the case of the AC. The age hardening behaviors of the WQ and AC were very similar such that the maximum hardness and aging rate were almost the same. Many parts of the fine precipitates that increased the hardness were thought to be the GPB zone or fine S’ phase for the WQ and relatively coarse S’ phase for the AC. From the calculated CCT(continuous cooling transformation)diagrams, the lower copper-containing specimens could maintain the copper and magnesium in the solid solution state during the AC, so they could be quenched at a rather slower quenching rate like the AC.INTRODUCTIONThe 2000 series aluminum alloys, containing copper and magnesium as the major chemical components, are some of the well-known heat treatable aluminum alloys. These alloys have a high quenching sensitivity, thus the age hardening ability of these alloys decreases with as low quenching rate. To prevent the decrease of the age hardening ability, quenching is done by a method such as water quenching, which is not very efficient in an industrial situation, because the method requires such large equipment. For these alloys, reducing the quenching sensitivity helps them to be produced in a rather convenient way. For example, 6000 series alloys such as A6063 have low quenching sensitivity, thus they could be quenched by only air cooling just after extrusion and they do not need water quenching. Based on these reasons, investigations of these alloys with high copper and magnesium contents have been conducted in the past to find a way to lower the quenching sensitivity by adding transition elements such as manganese, chromium and zirconium (Kanno, Suzuki, & Itoh, 1986; Suzuki & Itoh, 1986; Kanno, Sakuma, Muromachi, & Watanabe, 1988). However, very few studies have focused on the quenching sensitivity of the lower copper and magnesium containing alloys because of their usage for structural components with high strength, and most of the past studies have used only the fast quenching method like water quenching. On the other hand, from our recent results, there is a possibility to lower the quenching sensitivity of 2000 series alloys with lower alloying elements. In this paper, the effect of the copper and magnesium contents with lower alloying elements and quenching rate, especially in case of slower quenching rate than conventional quenching method, on the age hardening behavior of the 2000 series alloys is investigated by the hardness measurement, structure observation and thermal analysis."

In present work, the comparative measurement of aluminum alloys' resistance to the unstable fracture was provided. Besides, the rupture mechanisms of high strength 7075 and 7050 aluminum alloys were investigated. The specimens were used as solution treated, quenched and aged condition. The elastic-plastic behavior of specimens was determined by carrying out tensile test on cylindrical specimens. The small sized specimen with 6.35 mm thickness and V-notched radius less than 60 µm was used for evaluation of damage properties, in accordance with ASTM B871-96 standard test method. All tear specimens were machined in L-T orientation. The mechanical tests were conducted at RT on an universal Instron machine under cross head speed of 0.1 mm/min. The results of mechanical tests made the evaluation of tear strength to 0.2 % tensile yield strength ratio, as a measure of notch toughness, available. The comparison of specimens' resistance to crack propagation and unstable fracture due to the presence of crack-like strain concentrator was provided using tear test data. The microstructure of specimens was studied under optical microscopy. The rupture micro-mechanisms were analyzed by examination of specimens fracture surfaces using SEM. The microstructure examination indicated almost equiaxed grains on the transverse directions and elongated grains on rolling direction. Moreover, intermetallic particles were evident at microstructure. Considering the SEM fractographs, it seems that the intermetallic particles act as void nucleation and damage initiation sites. However, the damage mechanism of tensile specimens and severely notched specimens, especially near the notched root differs due to stress and strain states.

"Abstract -The Kipawa yttrium-zirconium prospect is located about 150 km south of Noranda, Quebec . Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by ? 0.10% Y203, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% Zr02. The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and cale-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and rninor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in cale-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

"Testwork was conducted in order to compare the effectiveness of carbon based catalysts while oxidizing a gold-bearing pyrite concentrate under atmospheric conditions. Without the use of a catalyst the oxidation of pyrite was incomplete after 96 hours, resulting in roughly 60% pyrite oxidation. Furthermore the resulting sulphate yield from unassisted pyrite oxidation ranged between 72 and 84%. It is evident that atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is not viable due to slow oxidation kinetics and high sulphuric acid production when using a ferric sulphate media without a catalyst. The effect of two different carbon based catalysts, one Lewatit® AF 5 a new microporous carbonaceous bead, and the second a granular coconut shell based activated carbon, were tested under the same oxidation conditions as the unassisted pyrite tests. After 96 hours, Lewatit® AF 5 assisted oxidation showed approximately 96% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield ranging between 26 and 35%, while the activated carbon assisted oxidation reached approximately 100% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield between 36 and 37%. Testwork indicated that not only does the addition of a carbon based catalyst greatly improve the oxidation kinetics and lead to almost complete oxidation, the sulphate yield is also drastically reduced, resulting in very high elemental sulphur yields.INTRODUCTION Pyrite is an important sulphide mineral due to its ability to contain invisible gold concentrations up to 132 g/t (Chryssoulis & Cabri, 1990). As a result, ores composed of only a small amount of pyrite still have the ability to contain high gold grades. This refractory gold cannot be accessed via conventional gold leaching processes, such as cyanidation, and additional oxidative pre-treatment is required to liberate the gold, making it more amenable to extraction (Marsden & House, 2006). Current oxidative pre-treatments do exist consisting of both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes including high temperature and high pressure leaching within autoclaves, biological atmospheric leaching and roasting. Autoclaves are a proven process reaching desirable recoveries within approximately a 1–2 hour retention time, due to the increased temperatures and pressures, allowing for an increase in dissolved oxygen (Marsden & House, 2006). The typical reaction for pyrite oxidation within autoclaves is presented in Equations 1, 2 and 3."

THE Falcon Lake stock is a small igneous mass, 2.6 square miles in area, which has intruded a belt of older lavas and metamorphosed sediments. It is well exposed and the entire area of its outcrop is taken up with surveyed mining claims, the claim lines forming a grid which makes ideal conditions for a detailed petrographical study of the unusual variations which are found in the composition of this unit (see Figure 1). The study of this mass, which has revealed features of both scientific and economic significance, began in the summer of 1939 when trainees in a Prospectors' Training Camp, a Do-minion-Provincial youth-training project under the writer's supervision, were, detailed to map rock outcrops on various mining claims. Microscopic study of rock specimens taken on a line across this stock were made during the following winter and proved to be of such interest that a special trip was made the following summer for the purpose of gathering more data, the results of which are presented here. Location The stock is close to the southeast corner of the province of Manitoba, about three miles from the Ontario boundary. It lies between Falcon and West Hawk lakes and less than a mile south of the Trans-Canada highway. It is easily accessible by motor car, as a branch road from the highway leads to the Sunbeam Kirkland gold mine, which is within the inner core of the stock. Previous Work This area was the first in the Province to receive attention from prospectors, who entered it from the adjacent Lake of the Woods district during the days of the mining boom in the 1890's. Small occurrences of gold, copper, molybdenum, and tungsten ores were found, but to date there has been no production from the district, except for small shipments of gold ore. The regional geology has been mapped by the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources, the Falcon Lake stock being shown and recorded as of "varying composition". The more detailed work involved in preparing the accompanying map has necessitated only minor changes in the outline as previously mapped.

"Coal mining, whether surface or underground, has hazards that make it unique in the field of industrial safety and health. The often soft, faulted and folded sedimentary strata make wall or roof movement a risk to the safe and economic removal of the coal, while the extraction and handling of coal may create an explosion hazard even in surface operations, In Canada, these problems are compounded by the situation of the coal fields which range from deep undersea deposits in Nova Scotia to steeply pitching thick coal seams high in the Rocky Mountains. Climate too can create its own problems, particularly the effect of metals of minus 40°C temperatures, as crumpled dragline booms at prairie strip mines witness. Because of the difficult and sometimes hazardous conditions, Canada's underground colliery managers, in common with those of other Commonwealth coal-producing countries, must have a government ""certificate of competency"" before being appointed as mine managers. Certification of assistant managers (""under-managers"") and foremen (""fire-bosses"") is also a legal requirement for all of Canada's underground collieries, while the province of Alberta requires certification of surface management personnel. Electricians and mechanics who install and maintain the specially designed equipment underground and in hazardous areas of surface mines and processing plants, and mine surveyors who ensure accuracy of the location of underground workings, must also hold government certificates of competency. The requisites for all certification include a minimum work experience and knowledge of coal mining technology and mine safety and health legislation. Despite recognition of the hazards and increasing knowledge of methods of preventing explosions of flammable gas and coal dust in Canada's underground mines, there have been several disastrous explosions such as those at Springhill Colliery in Nova Scotia in 1891 with the loss of 125 lives, at Hillcrest Colliery in Alberta in 1914 with 189 dead, and more recently · explosions and fires in No. 20 and No. 26 Collieries in Cape Breton. Preventing explosions has required developing optimal ventilation techniques, reducing ignition potential, suppressing ignition at source, draining flammable gas before it can enter the air courses, and preventing, or sealing off, autogenous heatings with their associated carbon monoxide or explosion dangers."

"The United States contains a variety of domestic rare earth element mineral sources containing such as ancylite, bastnasite, monazite, and xenotime. Research has been performed to investigate the fundamental surface chemistry involved in the froth flotation of these minerals, and apply the knowledge gained to substantiate the results through experimental testwork on a domestically sourced rare earth ore. This paper will outline the fundamentals and literature of rare earth mineral flotation, review its industrial applications and provide some recent research updates.THE RARE EARTH ELEMENTSRare earth elements (REE’s) are a unique family of elements with nearly identical physical and chemical properties. They account for approximately 1/6th of all naturally occurring elements, but the entire group occupies only one position on the periodic table. These 15 elements make up the lanthanide series (atomic numbers 57–71), and all but one (promethium) occur naturally. In addition to these 15 elements, yttrium and scandium are also considered rare earths since they tend to occur in the same deposits as the rare earths and share similar physical and chemical properties as seen in Figure 1. In particular Figure 2 denotes, a cartoon of the subtle differences in each caused by the 4f atomic sub shell (Gschneidner Jr., 1964). These subtle differences result in very difficult challenges in the selective concentration and final separation of each rare earth. (Anderson, 2015, Kronholm, Anderson, Taylor, 2013)Rare earths are separated into two different subsections; the “lights” or LREE’s (lanthanum57 through europium63) and the “heavies” or HREE’s (gadolinium64 through lutetium71). Yttrium is generally considered a heavy rare earth since its ionic radius is close to that of the HREE’s, while scandium is not considered either a light or a heavy."

"The present contribution is complementary with a preceding one on the field association of the conform-able ""pyritic"" deposits. It considers the more important features of their mineralogical constitution and their microtextures, re-examines the present interpretations of these, and of-fer-some alternative explanations. The term ""pyritic"" for these de-posits is m many cases a misnomer, as two quite distinct ore types are inuolve. One is a banded pyritic sphalerite-galena-chalcopyrite ore (for which the term '•pyritic"" is in-deed quite suitable), while the other is non-banded and is composed essentially of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. In addition to these constitutional differences, each is distinctive in general appearance and texture. The occurrence of two such consistent but clearly distinguishable ore types is attributed -rather than to difference in source material and pressure-temperature conditions of deposition -to the contribution of similar source material to dissimilarly oxygenated environments of sedimentation. Textures in the banded ores generally thought to be indicative of replacement or of high-temperature exsolution are explained by slow, law-temperature segregation in situ during compaction, folding, and regional metamorphism."

"Introduction0N MAY 2th, 1953, Socony Seaboard Pembina No. 1 well, located 70 miles west-southwest of Edmonton, was completed as a producer of high-gravity oil from the Cretaceous Cardinm sand. This event is possibly the most significant in the development of the oil industry in Western Canada since the Devonian discovery at Leduc in 1947. The result of the Pembina discovery and the follow-up drilling has been a tremendous increase in interest in the Cardium formation.Descriptions of the Cardium formation, as it occurs in the 'Central Foothills' and in the 'Southern British Columbia Foothills' have been presented by R. E. Folinsbee (9)-and C. R. Stelck (21), respectively. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the more regional aspects of the subject.The name Cardium was first used .as a stratigraphic term in 1863. Dr. James Hector ( l2), geologist attached to Captain John Palliser's exploratory expedition, gave the name 'Cardium to the whole section of marine Cretaceous beds exposed along the Bow river west of Calgary."

"THE Mindamar zinc-lead-copper mine, owned by Mindamar Metals Corporation Limited, is at Stirling in Richmond County, near the south-eastern shore of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia (Figure I). It is connected by several roads with the Canadian National railway at Sydney and St. Peters.The deposit is said to have been discovered around 1895 as an outcrop in the bed of Copper brook, but the details are obscure. Not until 1925, when it was optioned by American Cyanamid Company, was it developed underground. Between 1927 and 1938, the 1-nine was operated intermittently by The British Metal Corporation (Canada) Limited, and yielded approximately 200,000 tons of ore averaging about IO per cent zinc, 2 per cent lead, I per cent copper, and small quantities of silver and gold. In December 1950, Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited made an agreement with Mindamar Metaî Corporation Limited, which was exploring the old mine, to assume management and prepare the property for production. Production started in April 1952 with a new mill and a new four-compartment shaft, and between that time and the end of 1954 it has totalled 545,347 tons of ore averaging 5·89 per cent zinc, 1·35 per cent lead, 0·66 per cent copper, 0·032 oz. gold, and 2 151 oz. silver.The Mindamar orebodies are irregular lenses and large veins lying within a wide, almost vertical shear zone of remarkable persistency. The shear zone consists mainly of well-foliated sericite schist derived from siliceous siltstone, and it contains a vast amount of dolomite and magne-site of hydrothermal origin. Most of the ore is extremely fine-grained and some of the high-grade material has a conspicuous thinly layered structure. The metallic minerals, in order of decreasing abundance, are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and tennantite; the gangue minerals, in the same order, are dolomite and magnesite, quartz, sericite, talc, chlorite, barite, albite, and alunite.The geological setting of the deposit is shown in Figure 2. Except along streams and lake shores, almost all of the bedrock is concealed by glacial drift. The group of rocks in which the deposit occurs consists principally of greywacke, siltstone, tuff, brecoia, and Javas, and has been correlated lithologically with the Bourinot group of Middle Cambrian age. A short distance west of the mine, these rocks are in contact along the Stirling fault with conglomerate, arkosic sandstone, and quartzite belonging to the Middle River group of Silurian or Devonian (?) age, which elsewhere in the area overlies the Bourinot group unconformably. The large bodies of granitic rocks in the region, and the large lenticular masses of diorite and quartz diorite associated with them, have been assigned by Weeks (5, pp. 68-69) to the Devonian."

"This paper describes the work undertaken to renovate the Pipe Open Pit drainage system, incorporating measures to improve effluent quality. It describes the technical feat of drilling an l l-inch-diameter hole from the bottom of the open pit for a distance of 1100feet to intersect an underground drift. An innovative method of checking the inclination of this hole is also described. The paper outlines the construction required on the 1500-foot level of the underground mine to facilitate water impoundment and slime settling, as well as the instrumentation for control of water flows. IntroductionThe Manitoba Division of Inco Metals Company operates two mines-an underground mine at Thompson and an open pit at Pipe. The Pipe Open Pit is located 20 miles southwest of the City of Thompson, approximately 400 miles due north of Win nipeg(Fig. 1).Surface diamond drilling of the Pipe ore body was sta rted in 1959. In 1961, a shaft was sunk to a depth o f 1,570 feet to carry out further exploration work and obtain bulk ore samples for metallurgical testing. Site preparation to mine the upper portion of the orebody as an open pit was initiated in 1966 and by late 1967, the removal of silt and clay overburden was in progress. The contractor completed the dredging in the fall of 1969. Over 12 million cubic yards of muskeg, clay and silt was removed, which in some places was 150 feet deep over the orebody. Production began in early 1971, by which time the top three benches of rock had been excavated and the orebody exposed.The Pipe No. 2 Mine main shaft was started in 1970 and completed in 1973 at a depth of 3,160 feet. Development for exploration purposes was carried out on the 1500 and 2460 levels, and permanent pumping facilities were installed.The surface dimensions of the open pit are 2,200 by 1,600 feet, with the long axis striking northeast. The walls are designed with a 45- to 50-degree slope and the ultimate design depth is 720 feet. The present depth of the pit is 520 feet and production capacity is 6,800 tons of ore per mine day."

Banded iron formations (BIFs) comprise complex textures and mineralogy, which result from fluid-rock interactions related to high and low temperature alteration. The initial iron oxy hydroxide mineralogy and associated phases such as carbonates, quartz, apatite and phyllosilicates were transformed leading to an upgrading of these BIFs into the world’s largest source of iron ore. In low-grade BIFs, a large part of the iron is related to micro- and nano- metric iron-bearing inclusions within micrometric quartz and/or carbonates (mainly dolomite). We studied laminated jaspilitic BIF samples from a drill core containing 26.71 wt.% total iron, 0.2 wt.% SiO2, 0.32 wt.% MnO, 15.46 wt.% MgO, 22.32 wt.% CaO, 0.09 wt.% P2O5, < 0.05 wt.% Al2O3, 0.15 wt.% H2O and 34.08 wt.% CO2 (Aguas Claras Mine, Quadrilatero Ferrifero, Brazil). Bright rose coloured dolomite and quartz bands alternate with massive specular hematite bands. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and FIB-TEM analyses reveal that the micro- and nanometric inclusions in dolomite are mainly hematite and minor goethite, partly occurring as clusters in voids. Curie Balance analyses were carried out at different heating steps and temperatures on whole rock samples and a synthetic mix of decarbonated sample and pure dolomite. X-ray diffraction on the products of the heating experiments shows that that hematite is stable and new phases: magnesioferrite (MgFe2O4), lime (CaO), periclase (MgO), portlandite (Ca(OH)2) and srebrodoskite (Ca2Fe2O5) were formed between 680°C and 920°C. These finding gives hints to optimizing the beneficiation process, as the presence of hydroxyl ions bearing goethite micro- and nanoinclusions lowers the sintering temperature. Prior separation of coarse hematite and barren dolomite and quartz, followed by lower temperature sintering of the inclusionbearing dolomite/quartz leads to transformations into phases with higher magnetic susceptibilities (such as hematite and magnesioferrite). The entire Fe and Fe/Mg oxide feed (the priorly separated fraction added to the sintered fraction) can then pass through wet-high intensity magnetic separation after crushing.

"The 1580 m long dual-tube motorway tunnel Markusberg near Schengen, Luxembourg experiences strong swelling phenomena in each tube related to a 35 m wide diagonally crossing rock layer, some150 to 200m from the east portals. Overburden over the roadway is 26 to 30 meters. Tunnel construction started in 1998 and the tunnel was opened in 2003. The tunnel was driven downgrade from the West, the heave phenomenon started to occur as the tunnel approached completion. No indications of the presence of anhydrite and dissolved sulphates were known prior to tunnelling. Water samples had been taken from the beginning of construction and the concentration of anions and cat ions determined. Sulfate content was substantial, in one well it reached 22 mg/l, this high concentration requires the presence of other ions, in particular sodium and chlorine. Based on the knowledge at the time of construction heaving ground was removed from the tunnel invert and a free space was left below the roadway that is covered by a transversely spanned slab. In addition a series of posttensioned tiebacks were installed below the sidewalls. The void left in 2003 was 1.7m high and closed to less than 0.5 meters in 2007 then it became necessary to widen the free space. A central trench was dug with a height of about 2.5 meters and the benches were lowered.Level surveying had been carried out since 2002. In 2006 two extensometers were installed, one in the zone of strongest heave, the second at the edge of the swelling zone. The extensometer in the center of the swelling zone indicated heave with an essential constant rate with seasonal variations, the heave is concentrated in layer from 2 to 5 meters that heaved by nearly 300 millimeters within 5 years or 60 mm/year, which equals to approx. 1% extension per year. At the abutments heave rates of 20 mm/year where the support resistance is higher were observed. With data from other case histories a relation of heave rate with support resistance was established. Based on the numerous field observations hypotheses for the complex in-situ swelling processes, involving rock mechanics, mineralogical, soil mechanics and hydrogeological aspects were developed"

In 2010, the foreseen increase of copper grade in feed concentrate at the Horne Smelter was a significant challenge to maintain a steady copper flow throughout the process. The Horne Smelter process includes a Noranda Reactor, a Noranda Converter, pyro refining vessels and anode furnaces. Of the many challenges involved, improving the single casting wheel performance was one of the key topics. Its reliability had to be improved to meet the new production objectives, as anode copper production was to increase from 170 000 to 225 000 tonnes/year. A multidisciplinary team was dedicated to improve the casting wheel availability. The improvement project allowed pinpointing failure modes and reviewing operational and maintenance practices. The common understanding developed by the team allowed improving small components with a high gain-to-effort ratio. The project allowed reaching operational targets without any significant investment. INTRODUCTION In operation since 1927, the Horne Smelter, located in Rouyn-Noranda, in Quebec, has undergone several technological changes since its original construction. Built to smelt the Horne mine concentrates, the smelter also accepted some local custom feeds from the first years of operation. When the Horne mines stopped production in 1976, the plant became a 100% custom smelter. With the development of the Noranda Reactor (1973) and Noranda Converter (1997), the Horne smelter increased its productivity and improved its environmental performance. Continuous improvement of the Horne process allowed maintaining a high level of flexibility in the operation of the smelter, while improving its overall capacity.

"Sulfide ore processing is characterized by significant losses of metals, for example, with flotation tailings. Therefore, flotation tailings can present an important source of metals. The treatment of flotation tailings is a technological issue due to low content of valuable metals (e.g. copper and zinc) and high iron content. The goal of the present work was to investigate extraction of base metals and gold from old flotation tailings containing 17% iron, 0.26% copper, 0.22% zinc, and 0.7 g/t gold. Chemical leaching in columns with 0.5 to 10% sulfuric acid solutions and bioleaching in air-lift percolators were used for the extraction of base metals. 1% H2SO4 provided high extraction of base metals and best selectivity. Recovery of copper and zinc reached 35% and 40%. Increasing H2SO4 concentration did not lead to significant increase in base metals extraction, but led to increased iron concentration in the pregnant solutions. The 1% H2SO4 leaching solid residues were used for further experiments. Acid leaching and bioleaching did not result in significant increase in base metals recovery. Leaching of the residue with 10% H2SO4 provided extraction of 4% copper and 20% zinc, and bioleaching for 100 days provided extraction of 16% copper and 12% zinc. The recovery of gold by cyanidation from the flotation tailings, the 1% H2SO4 leaching solid residue and residue of two-step acid leaching were 50, 49, and 65%, respectively. The results suggest that acid leaching can be effective approach for treatment of old flotation tailings.INTRODUCTIONAbout 80% of base metals (copper, nickel, zinc) are produced through pyrometallurgical treatment of sulfide ores. Mining and metallurgical treatments of sulfide ores are presently characterized by significant losses of non-ferrous and precious metals into the various wastes. For example, flotation of sulfidic ores yields formation sulfide flotation tailings. These wastes pose a problem not just because of their sheer volume, but some of them may affect local ecosystems. Nowadays, mining and metallurgical wastes can be considered as technogenical source of base metals."
