A case study is presented on the optimization of cable bolting patterns in cut-and-fill stopes at the Chikla Mine, MOIL, India. Rock mass characterization, using Bieniawski’s RMR and Barton’s Q, indicated that the stopes lie in the “no supports required” to “spot bolting required” support categories. In contrast, the current practice of cable bolting in a 2.0 m by 2.0 m grid pattern for stope widths less than 12 m displays different results. Numerical modelling results are in line with the rock mass characterization study. It can be affirmed, as well, that no cable is carrying rock loads greater than 5 t. This fact is derived from observational behaviour of the crown pillar of an experimental stope with open stoping operations and hanging cables in the cut-and-fill stopes of the mine. An increase in the cable bolting grid spacing is, hence, recommended for implementation by mine management, based on the study described in subsequent sections. It is also suggested that the mine adopt the open stoping method, provided results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program in an experimental stope with a cable bolting grid of 2.5 m square are favourable.

"The nickel ores of Sudbury contain substantial amounts of the gangue mineral pyrrhotite (Fe7S&) which causes certain diflculties in the milling of these ores. This paper proposes a process called “magnetoflotation” as an effective means of dealing with pyrrhotite. The method reduces the pyrrhotite content of concentrates by applying a magneticjield on the path product as it leaves the flotation cell.Successful performance of magnetoflotation requires the optimization of several variables. In this study, three of the variables (air flowrate, collector concentration, pother concentration) were investigated by Box- Wilson experimental design, and others (magnet speed, grind size, pulp density, flotation time) were examined individually. The process was tested on a Falconbridge nickel ore, assaying 1.92% Ni, and under the best operating conditions, a concentrate was obtained with 13.56% Ni grade and 74.32% recovery in a single step. Further improvements to grade and recovery were possible by cleaning and scavenging. The same ore was also tested with conventional methods for comparison, and results indicated that magnetoflotation performed better.INTRODUCTION“Magnetoflotation” refers to the process of carrying out magnetic separation and flotation simultaneously within the same device, and is intended to prevent magnetic minerals from reporting to the froth products while non-magnetic minerals are being floated. Typical cases where this method might be beneficial include the processing of magnetite and nickel ores. Its use on magnetite ores has been reported elsewhere [Yalcin, 1992; Yalcin, 19931. This paper describes its application to nickel ores, more specifically to the nickel ore of Falconbridge Limited in Sudbury."

INTRODUCTION NUMEROUS examples of troubled zones, interfering with the normal development of coal seams, have been cited in the literature. From a geological point of view they can be subdivided into structural and sedimentary troubles. Of the latter type, wash-outs are usually the most bothersome. Some years ago, A. A. Thiadens and the author arrived at the conclusion that they represent fossil river-beds. A method of predicting the course of these rivers was developed, which has been successfully applied in the Netherlands coal measures, and more recently by P. Stassen in some of the Belgian coalfields and by the author in the Sydney coalfield. The Sydney coalfield has long .drawn the attention of geologists, and three main periods of systematic geological research may be distinguished. The first period, 1872-1900, is covered by the studies of Ch. Robb and H. Fletcher (32, 10-13) (1). Their detailed sections of the cliffs have lost nothing in value, and are frequently consulted today.

"Advances in technology provide educators with valuable tools to enhance their teaching and efficiently deliver content to larger audiences. University educators are often encouraged to become more “research intensive” and to increase student enrollment. Faced with these pressures, there is a tendency to use technology to improve teaching efficiencies rather than to enhance existing teaching approaches. Practical learning in applied engineering courses would suffer greatly if hands-on experience is not emphasized. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of new technologies applied to learning, and methods to incorporate more hands-on experiential teaching techniques to applied mining engineering courses.RÉSUMÉ Les avancées technologiques fournissent aux éducateurs des outils intéressants pour rehausser leur enseignement et livrer efficacement de la matière à de grands auditoires. Les éducateurs universitaires sont souvent encouragés à devenir plus « axés sur la recherche » et d’augmenter l’inscription d’étudiants. Face à ces pressions, il y a une tendance à utiliser la technologie pour améliorer l’efficacité d’enseignement plutôt que de rehausser les approches existantes d’enseignement. L’apprentissage concret dans les cours d’ingénierie appliquée souffrirait grandement si l’accent n’est pas mis sur l’expérience pratique. The Wabana deposit of Dosco Industries Limited is situated on the east coast of Newfoundland, at Bell Island in Conception Bay. It is a Clinton-type iron-formation of Lower Ordovician age. Five separate beds have been recognized, with others noted locally. Economic production has been obtained from the Lower, Middle and Upper beds, which are second, third and fifth in sequence, al-though at present only the Lower Bed is worked. The potential area of occurrence is about 70 square miles. It i;; bounded by major faults to the north, east and west and truncated by erosion at the south, where rocks of the de-posit crop out on the north side of the island. The iron is contained in oolitic hematite and chamosite, with minor siderite. As the deposit is submarine, conventional exploration methods are not applicable and much interpretation and projection from mined areas is necessary to guide exploration and development. With the interpretation of information from existing mined ores, it is possible, using a minimum of diamond drilling in advance of working faces, to maintain adequate ore reserves.

ABSTRACT This paper details the work of RISKGATE, the largest Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) occupational health and safety initiative to date. The program is an interactive online risk management system developed to maximize health and safety performance in the coal mining industry by implementing continuous improvement in managing major unwanted events. The comprehensive knowledge base covers tires, collisions, fires, isolation, strata control underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks, and slips/trips/falls. All major Australian coal mining companies contributed topic experts to this broad industry initiative: nine coal mining companies, more than 80 experts, and more than 400 days of individual time for knowledge-capture workshops.

Today, the mining and mineral sectors are being impacted by highly fluctuating supply ? demand, extreme price volatility and tremendous market uncertainty on a world-wide basis. This pattern is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. In particular, large consumers of tonnage quantities of industrial gases (oxygen, nitrogen) all have to make informed investment decisions in this uncertain economic environment. Plant owners ? operators need to carefully examine their current and future industrial gas needs in order to develop the most cost-effective industrial gas plant configuration. This can be done by partnering with an experienced engineering company that offers a complete technology portfolio for producing industrial gases. Ideally, the mineral and engineering companies have to work together as a single team to identify the most efficient and economic plant design. This includes an in-depth assessment of capital and operating costs, in order to deliver an optimal solution, taking plant reliability and process safety into account. It is important to consider all the industrial gas needs at a given manufacturing complex, in conjunction with available utilities and infrastructure to develop the best possible long term solution. Oxygen (O2) requirements include: oxygen enriched and oxy-fuel combustion, smelting and hydrometallurgical operations. Nitrogen (N2) is used for annealing. All of these industrial gas requirements have to be examined at a given site over a long term horizon in a holistic manner. Cryogenic air separation was first practiced at a commercial scale in 1902. Since then, the technology has been constantly refined to reduce cost; and improve reliability and flexibility. Today, using advanced engineering techniques, including proprietary process simulation, and modern fabrication techniques, it is possible to build air separation plants that are both low cost and high quality at the same time. It is important to work with an engineering company that owns a complete portfolio of industrial gas technologies, functional engineering capabilities and a variety of plant solutions. Such a partnership can quickly identify a ?sweet spot? for a given situation. By drawing on experience gained from hundreds of projects, it is possible to quickly optimize a given requirement. In situations where a customer wants a complete solution it may be appropriate to provide an air separation plant on a turn-key basis. This will enable the mining and mineral processor to focus on their core business. By using global procurement and construction capabilities it is possible reduce cost and improve project execution, thereby making industrial gas plant procurement simpler and cheaper for the mining and mineral sector.

In his March 31, 1977 budget, Finance Minister Macdonald has attempted the delicate balancing act of stimulating the economy without reinforcing the inflationary pressures which Canada is continuing to experience. Several tax changes of benefit to the mining industry, as well as measures designed to encourage oil exploration in frontier areas, are among the budget proposals. Additional earned depletion of 66- 2 /3 %, which may be offset against income from any source, will be available on drilling costs in excess of $5 million incurred between March 31, 1977 and April 1, 1980 in connection with an exploratory well in Canada, including the continental shelf . Other changes include more favourable treatment of resource property dispositions, less restrictive rules r elating to "successor corporations" , increased capital-cost allowance on railway spur lines, the inclusion of certain production royalties in Canadian development expenses and the application of the lower "manufacturing and processing" tax rate to sulphur production. To encourage business capital spending, the 5% federal investment tax credit it to be extended an additional three years to mid 1980 and broadened to include spending on scientific research and development. The rate of credit will also be selectively increased on a regional basis, to 7.5 % in certain designated areas in Saskatchewan, Manitoba. Northern. Ontario and Quebec, and to 10% in the Atlantic provinces and the Gaspe.

"The challenges encountered in the design and construction of mines and their process facilities today are becoming more intense and the engineering more competitive. The need to incorporate new techno1ogy to compensate for ever rising costs is always present, but its application in the harsh environment of Northern Canada increasingly requires the inclusion of new proven methods and innovative approaches to arrive at economically attractive projects.This paper deals with the development of the process design for the Cullaton Lake Gold Mine in the Northwest Territories. Particular emphasis is given to the interaction of the imposed construction and testwork schedules, and their effect on certain process decisions.The challenge that faced the project team may be defined by the following factors:1. A schedule which required that metallurgical testing, engineering, and procurement and delivery of all equipment and construction supplies should be complete within a period of ten months.2. Transportation of all personnel, equipment and supplies to the site by airlift, as no road was available or affordable.3. A six week period when transportation to the site was impossible.4. The extremes of temperature beyond the tree line in the Northwest Territories.5. A complete lack of infrastructure in the area."

"A 2003 paper discussed the idea that as gold mining companies grow larger it becomes more difficult for them to discover or acquire new gold deposits large enough to replace extracted reserves on an annual basis. Deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are statistically few. An update in 2005 reviewed VLGPs with respect to production, reserves, and reserve life and observed recent changes in the gold mining industry. Now, more than 12 years later, this paper explores how those VLGPs have fared and how the gold mining industry has changed. En quoi consistent les études de suivi des effets sur l?environnement (ESEE)? Les ESEE constituent une méthode de suivi scientifique que l?on peut employer pour déterminer la santé des écosystèmes aquatiques (qui peuvent être touchés par l?activité humaine) et l?efficacité des mesures de protection de l?environnement. Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. Toutes les mines assujetties au Règlement sur les effluents des mines de métaux (REMM), aux termes de la Loi sur les pê ches, doivent procéder à une ESEE dans le cadre de l?autorisation qu?ils ont reç ue de rejeter des effluents. "The Buffalo gold deposit is a small deposit consisting of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins within a granodiorite stock in the Red Lake greenstone belt. This study aims to characterize the mineralizing fluids through fluid inclusion and stable isotope analyses and to compare them with those of the world-class Campbell- Red Lake deposit. Four types of fluid inclusions were recognized, including carbonic, aqueous-carbonic, aqueous, and halite-bearing aqueous, with the carbonic type being the most abundant. Raman analyses indicate that the carbonic phase mainly consists of CO2, with minor amounts of N2 and CH4, and rarely detectable H2S. The homogenization temperatures of the carbonic inclusions range from -41.7° to 30.9°C. The homogenization temperatures and salinities of the aqueous, halite-bearing aqueous, and aqueous-carbonic inclusions are 130° to 276°C and 9.7 to 23.6 wt.% NaCl equiv., 155° to 207°C and 32.9 to 42.3 wt.% NaCl equiv., and 215° to 357°C and 8.3 to 19.7 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. The d18OVSMOW values of tourmaline range from 8.2‰ to 9.0‰, and those of quartz from 11.4‰ to 11.9‰, with estimated fluid temperatures from 323° to 399°C based on the quartz-tourmaline isotopic geothermometer. It is postulated that separate CO2-dominated and aqueous fluids intermittently invaded the fracture/vein system in response to fluid pressure fluctuations, with limited mixing. The CO2-dominated fluid, previously recognized in Campbell-Red Lake as the main mineralizing fluid, is inferred to have been derived from deeper parts of the crust. This deep CO2-dominated fluid reservoir might have been a common source for gold mineralization in the Red Lake greenstone belt. COMPLETED in November, 1943, at a cost of over $1,500,000, Elk River colliery of the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company, Limited, has been laid out and equipped for an ultimate annual production of 1,000,000 tons and replaces the recently closed Coal Creek plant, which has been operated by the Company for the past forty-five years. The project has involved the opening of mines in three seams, the construction of a complete set of colliery buildings, including a modern preparation plant of 360 tons per hour capacity, and the laying out of the necessary yard tracks and spur connecting the new development with the Company-owned Morrissey, Fernie and Michel railway, which, in turn, connects with the Canadian Pacific railway at Fernie. The colliery is three and a half miles east of Fernie, B.C., near the southern end of the Crow's Nest coal field, which contains the largest and most important body of coal in the Province of British Columbia. The coal-bearing horizon is the Kootenay formation, present in the form of a syncline covering an area of 230 square miles. Most of the coal seams occur in the lower 2,000 feet of the formation, the covering beds being largely coarse sandstones and conglomerates of great thickness, the presence of which accounts largely for the preservation of the coal measures. James McEvoy, in the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for the year 1900, states that the basin appears to contain a fairly constant coal content of nearly 172 feet in 23 seams of a thickness of one foot or over. Coal has been mined in the Fernie district since 1897 and the first shipments were made from Coal Creek colliery in the following year, over the then newly constructed British Columbia Southern railway. Since that time, a total of over 16,000,000 tons of coal has been produced, an average of 350,000 tons per year. The7ears of peak production were 1910, 1912, and 1913, with an all-time high of 924,000 tons in 1913. The lowest output in the history of Coal Creek was that for the year 1933, when only 60,340 tons were produced, the colliery being closed for some months. Present production from Elk River colliery averages 1,150 tons per day, the output being considerably less than it could be were sufficient man-power available.

"The Central Mukur deposit was discovered by the Semipalatinsk Geological Exploration Expedition (GEE) during detailed searches from 1977 to 1980. Andas Altyn Ltd., a Kazakhstanian gold mining company acquired the property and commenced mining in 1995. In 1998, Andas-Altyn Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corporation.The Central Mukur gold project covers a linear series of parallel, discontinuous zones of near surface oxide gold mineralization that covers a distance of 7 kilometers and extends past the property boundaries. The oxide gold mineralization is a result of the regional oxidization of a primary sulfide gold mineralization emplaced in a series of shallow dipping thrust faults. Resources as calculated by the GEE are 3.45 mt at an average grade of 1.84 gmt Au in the C1 +C2 category and 7.52 mt at an average grade of 1.80 gmt Au in the P1 category. The Central Mukur Gold Heap Leach Mine consists of an open pit, heap leach pads, and an ion exchange resin gold recovery plant. Limited gold production (<2,500 ounces/year) has been achieved over the past three years leaching run of mine oxide gold mineralization. Gold recovery utiling cyanide to dissolve the Au and ionic resin technology to recover the Au for the leachate is approximately 60%. Loaded resin is shipped to a treatment plant at Almaty where the gold is stripped from the resin, refined and sold.This paper will describe the geology, mining, and processing of the Central Mukur ore. In addition, it will describe what it is like doing business in Kazakhstan and the transition from a Soviet style operation to a more western style operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Central Mukur Mine is owned and operated by Andas-Altyn Ltd. a Kazakhstanian gold mining company located in northeast Kazakhstan. Andas-Altyn is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corp., a Canadian public company listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange. The Central Mukur mine consists of a small open pit, and a heap leach operation that utilizes ion exchange resin to recover gold from pregnant solutions. In addition to the Central Mukur mine, Eurasia also owns the Myaly heap leach gold project which is also operated by Andas- Altyn Ltd."

"Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The relatively low grade and refractory nature of the deposit has been a challenge for efficient processing since the start of mining on the property. Early processing techniques included gravity separation and barrel chlorination. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. After being closed and reclaimed for over 20 years, the property is poised to re-open and produce once again. In this chapter of the Mine’s legacy, flotation and ultra-fine grinding will be employed to achieve economic extraction of gold and silver from the pyrite. This paper briefly reviews some of the mine’s history, the metallurgical testing, the flowsheet and discusses design considerations.INTRODUCTIONHaile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that has delineated over 62 tonnes (+2M ozs.) of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2 ppm (0.06 opt). This paper provides a brief history of the property, a summary of metallurgical testing, description of the process flowsheet and discusses design considerations.HISTORY1827 – 1837Gold was discovered in creek beds on the Haile property in 1827. The property was owned by Benjamin Haile, and the first few years of production came from placer mining. After gold was discovered in schist beds to the sides of the streams, Haile expanded the operation by leasing 18 meter-square (50 ft.) plots to local planters. These planters used slaves to work the small excavations in the agricultural offseason. The gold ore was taken to arrastras where the free gold was liberated and recovered. The excavations were above the water table, generally less than 18 meters (60 ft.) down, and it was noted then that gold could be found embedded in sulfides and difficult to extract."

"The East West Caribou deposit with an underground mine, concentrator and ancillaries is located 30 km west of Bathurst, New Brunswick. The Restigouche deposit, an open pit mine is 30 km west of East West Caribou. The ore will be trucked from the Restigouche site to the East West Caribou minesite.History:The East West Caribou ore body was discovered in 1955 and the subsequent metallurgical programme focused on producing a bulk sulphide concentrate. However, in 1966 a Mr. P.G. Kihlstadt of Anaconda did float a Copper-Lead concentrate and a Zinc concentrate. He also reported that as the grind became finer the recoveries improved. In 1968 the Mines Branch in Ottawa produced a Lead concentrate of 30 percent at a 60.5 percent recovery and a 52 percent Zinc concentrate at an 83.4 percent recovery.Laboratory testwork proceed the 1988 start up of our current concentrator and underground mine facilities. The concentrator was designed to produce a Lead ""rich"" concentrate and a Zinc ""rich"" concentrate which were combined to make a marketable Bulk concentrate. In 1990 the operation was suspended because of declining base metal prices, increasing smelter treatment charges, increasing operating costs and operating difficulties.The 1997 operating plan is to produce a Lead concentrate and a Zinc concentrate.The Restigouche ore body was discovered in 1989. The subsequent testwork done at Lakefield Research recommended the production of a Copper, a Lead and a Zinc concentrate. The ore reserve could not support a stand alone concentrator so the project was put on hold.Laboratory testwork was carried out at Lakefield Research to confirm compatibility of the East West Caribou ore and the Restigouche ore in their processing."

"The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite. At the end of 2009, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. At high pH values (above 10.5), forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response. Given this, the pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 and it was found that there was a slight increase in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold. With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. This reduction in lime is equivalent to approximately $700,000 per annum at current production rates.INTRODUCTION The Xstrata Copper Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north east of Cloncurry, Australia. The mine began as an open-cut operation in 1998 and transitioned to a multi-sourced operation in December of 2011, utilising ore from the newly completed underground mine in addition to ore mined from the Mount Margaret Mining operations. EHM produces a combined copper gold concentrate containing 25 000 t of copper and 35 000 oz of gold annually, utilising a three stage grinding circuit along with a four stage flotation circuit. In addition to this EHM also produces 1 000 000 t of magnetite concentrate annually via a further grinding and three stage magnetic separation circuit. Based on metallurgical test work performed by Magotteaux between 2002 and 2008, the step to change from forged steel media to 18 percent chrome media was taken in 2009 in a bid to alter the pulp chemistry to improve the flotation performance in the plant (Greet, Kinal, Twomey, & Peatey, 2010). This plant trial resulted in: • Increased dissolved oxygen levels within the pulp, • A ball mill discharge Eh shift of 25 mV to more oxidising pulp potentials, and • An EDTA extractable iron percentage reduction. These improvements in the pulp chemistry resulted in an increase of 1.7 ± 0.6 percent in copper recovery and an increase of 2.9 ± 1.7 percent in gold recovery. As the plant trial using high chrome media was successful, the use of the media was adopted as the standard for the ball mill. This implementation opened the door for further process improvements around the flotation circuit."

"Prediction of wear on a microscale level in mineral processing equipment turns out to be a challenging undertaking. This is particularly true for cases in which the objective is to use such predictions for wear parts design. The key to obtaining such predictions has turned out to be the use of physics based models along with phenomenological constitutive equations. In this paper, two components of the HFS tool set, one for particles (DEM) and one for slurry (MPF), are used for modeling. These tools are applied to the simulation of wear of SAG/AG shell lifters/plates and wear in slurry pumps. In each case wear predictions are validated with plant measurements.INTRODUCTIONHigh Fidelity Simulation (HFS) has emerged as an important tool set for mineral processing plant equipment design and optimization (Herbst and Potapov, 2003; Herbst and Nordell, 2002; Herbst and Lichter, 2006). This tool set consists of Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) of particle motion, Multi-Phase Flow (MPF) for liquid motion, discrete grain breakage (DGB) for particle fragmentation and discrete grain liberation (DGL) for mineral liberation (Campbell, Potapov and Tsuji, 1997; Ferzinger and Peric, 1997; Potapov and Campbell, 1996; Herbst and Potapov, 2005).Three sample snapshots of basic HFS illustrating the use of each of the various types of mineral processing equipment are shown below.Figure 1 shows a snapshot of a DEM simulation of ball charge motion in a commercial scale Vertimill. DEM simulation involves simultaneous solution of Newton’s Laws of Motion for 400,000 balls."
