Traditionally, capital costs of major resource development projects have been estimated as a single amount to which a percentage accuracy has been assigned based on the method of preparation of the estimate, that is, on the amount of information available to develop the estimate.However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of a probabilistic approach to capital cost estimates, and of a more rigorous calculation of estimate accuracies and of the presentation thereof. Accuracies can be expressed with more certainty as a percentage of the estimate amount where the percentage represents one standard distribution on the probability curve for the capital cost of that specific project. Thus confidence levels can be stated for various estimated amounts - for example, it can be stated that there is an 85% chance that a stated amount will not be exceeded, or a 90% certainty that a (higher) amount will not be exceeded. Moreover, the right skewness of the probability distribution curve for most projects can be readily recognised and reflected in the evaluations. This enables senior executives and board members to have a clearer understanding of investment uncertainties, and the possible magnitude of commitments.

The process of electrostatic separation was developed in the late 19th century, but did not make much headway for about 25 years. High dc voltages, of the order of 20 kilovolts, are involved, and the only means of obtaining such voltages at that time were by the use of frictional machines, such as the Wimshurst. These were not reliable, for two reasons:-a. If a spark discharge occurred it took an appreciable time before a steady voltage was again attained.b. In damp weather the machines were almost useless.In the first 20 years of the 20th century the advent of mechanical and vacuum-tube rectifiers led to promising developments of 'the process. In the early 1920's flotation became widely used commercially, and proved to be more reliable, and capable of wider application, than electrostatic separation. During the last 15 years or so, with a better knowledge of the fundamentals forming the basis of the process, electrostatic separation is beginning to compete with flotation, especially in the treatment of smallsizedgranular material, such as beach sands. Electrostatic separation can be, and is, widely used in many cases where flotation is impossible, such as in the cleaning of food products which must be kept dry.

As we look back through the Proceedings of our Institute, we find few papers dealing directly with education and recruitment. Apart from papers prepared in the earlier decades of this century, there was little written discussion on the subject until the 1950s, and mostly this was by the professionals, the professors and lecturers who staff the various mining schools of Australia and New Zealand.I use the term "mining school" in its fullest and widest meaning, to cover all aspects from ore to metal, and not in the narrow meaning that the word might imply. At the same time, in restricting the parameters of this address to "ore to metal" I recognize that I am excluding the very important fields of physical metallurgy and materials science; this I do because there is a limit to the quantum of any paper, and in fact these subjects are more closely allied to the use rather than the production of metals.However, the lack of education papers does not mean that education has been regarded lightly by The Institute. Sir Maurice Mawby in his presidential address in 1968, reminded us of the original objectives of The Institute, one 'of which was, "To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals ...". Our present Royal Charter is more specific when it says that one of the objects of The Institute is, ". . . to encourage the study of engineering with special reference to mining and metallurgy ...". If we recognize that in itself membership of our Institute is one means of continuing our education, it is true that education has been a concern of The Institute since it was first founded.Occasionally in recent years, an intrepid president has ventured to tell the academics what the industry needs, and he generally does this in a "no-question" situation! However it is encouraging that those entrusted with mineral education have always accepted this; they keep coming back for more and ask us to tell them what we want, and they will provide it.In 1948 a considerable dialogue on education was initiated when a standing committee was established by the Council of The Institute. The Midas epithermal system is one of the larger low-sulfidation epithermal vein systems discovered in the western US in recent years, containing in excess of 3 Moz of gold (premining). The deposit is spatially and temporally related to bimodal volcanism in the Northern Nevada Rift; dates on igneous rocks (16 - 14.7 Ma) bracket the age of high grade veins (15.3 Ma). Hydrothermal alteration at Midas is typical of epithermal systems, comprising proximal potassic through distal propylitic assemblages; in contrast to many epithermal systems, Midas has minimal development of wallrock illite/sericite. Mineral assemblages are clearly zoned on the vein structures that acted as focal planes for fluid upflow. Geochemical zoning patterns also show this zoning. Metals were deposited in open-space veins as the result of boiling of hydrothermal fluids; multiple episodes of crustiform mineral deposition are documented in the vein textures. The major vein minerals include quartz, adularia, calcite, selenides and sulfides, with electrum as the primary ore mineral. REE patterns for vein material are similar to patterns for coeval rhyolites, but distinctly different from patterns of the host rocks. Stable isotope data are consistent with meteoric water as the dominant ore fluid. Combined REE and stable isotope data suggest that fluid from which the main ore-bearing stage of the veins was deposited was slightly lower pH than other stages.

The profitability of gold placer mining operations is determined by more factors than many placer miners recognise until too late. This study is based upon field trips to examine the efficiency of mining and transportation of gravels to a wash plant by bulldozer and truck. At the examined open pit mining operations gravels were washed using water canons, derockers or scrubber trommels. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between unit costs and power requirements for gravel mining and processing. The author conducted a number of time and motion studies at four open pit gold mines, including the Maly Patom Creek, the Nizhny Patom, the Taimendra Creek and the Kadali-Makit in the Bodaibo District, Irkutsk Region and collected and processed field data. As a part of the study significant correlations were determined and empiric regression equations derived between: power requirements (Ep) and unit cost (Cp) for gravel processing; and total power requirements (Et) and total unit cost (Ct) for gravel mining, transportation and processing. Based on the results of the study it was proposed to modify the current mining procedure methods and to replace water cannons at the Maly Patom Creek with a PPM-5 derocker. Introduction of the proposed technology resulted in 2004 in US$385 000 mining cost reduction at the Maly Patom Creek over a short-time Siberian mining season.

A detailed examination of carbonic acid leaching of crude iron-containing magnesia derived from Savage River magnesite shows that the rate and extent of magnesium and iron dissolution are affected by the slake time, leaching temperature, carbon dioxide pressure, pulp density and rate of agitation. In order to produce high-purity magnesia from the leachate by precipitation and calcination, the optimum leaching conditions, which are those that yield maximum magnesium and minimum iron dissolution, have to be a compromise in terms of the above parameters. For example, iron dissolution can be limited by leaching at an elevated temperature (-45°C), but because the maximum concentration of magnesium biearbonate decreases rapidly with an increase in temperature, it is necessary to use a low pulp density (-2 per cent solids) in order to achieve an acceptable degree of magnesium dissolution.Evidence is obtained that iron dissolution involves the formation of a soluble ferric bicarbonate complex that decomposes at elevated temperatures. The extent of iron dissolution is much higher than might be expected and it is probably because the original magnesite contains siderite in solid solution with the magnesite; on calcination, the hematite whieh is formed is in a very finely divided condition and hence more reactive.

Reconnaissance geochemical exploration in the vicinity of low angle detachment faults which bound the core of the Paparoa metamorphic core complex yielded Au up to 14 ppm, with 35% of greywacke, granitoid and quartz vein samples in the northern range exceeding the 0.01 ppm detection limit. Au is associated with Ag, As, Sb and Cu anomalies consistent with epithermal-type mineralisation. The Ag and Cu anomalies also distinguish this mineralisation from older, mesothermal Au deposits widespread in the Ordovician 'slate belt' greywackes, which comprise much of the upper plate of the core complex. Baryte, molybdenite, fluorite and stratiform U mineralisation in the northernPaparoa Range may also be related to hydrothermal activity along the detachment fault zones.

Coal augering is an ideal method for recovering coal from the highwalls of open cut coalmines. Coal augering is a simple process whereby additional flights are added to the auger cutting head and auger holes are drilled at 1.9 m diameter up to 200 metres deep. Traditional monitoring was located at the mouth of the hole and if methane was encountered above two per cent, inert gas was delivered into the mouth of the hole to deplete the oxygen content at the auger cutting head below 12 per cent. The auger operator was asked the question ‘how do you know that this is the case?’ Trials were undertaken to prove that the oxygen content at the cutting head did drop below 12 per cent (the lowest limit for methane to ignite, also known as the oxygen nose point). Initial trials showed that the oxygen content in the mouth of the hole did not drop below 12 per cent and modifications were made to hold the inert gases in the mouth of the hole so that the auger flights could take this inert gas into the hole. In-hole monitoring, after completion of mining and after extracting the auger flights, showed that the atmosphere quickly returned to fresh air. In-hole monitoring was also tried during the augering process and yielded valuable results. This paper will discuss the results of the monitoring, information on the gas results obtained and the methodologies used to optimise the oxygen content at the auger face.CITATION:Watkinson, M and Leisemann, B, 2017. The changes in layout and design over 48 years, from the first crushing and shiploading plant installed at Whyalla in 1915, up to the present plant being built at Koolan Island, Yampi Sound may be summarized as follows.1. Smaller motors and lower power consumption have resulted froma. oil lubrication, where practicable, in place of grease,b. a high pressure "oil-lift" device to reduce starting torque in crushers with white metal bearings, andc. roller bearings in place of white metal.2. Short centre drives with pivot-based motors permit controlled loads on bearings and a reduction in size of crusher houses and motor rooms.3. Dust proofing and pressurising of crusher houses and motor rooms reduces working temperatures and improves cleanliness.4. Variable speed pan feeders give improved plant control, with the use of one man only, and remove the need for large surge bins between crushing stages.5. The use of diesel quarry trucks to dump ore through a "drive over"tip results in faster truck cycles.6. Elevated cylindrical silos with air operated chutes, replace long horizontal storage bins with multiple manually operated side discharge chutes for loading rail cars, and give faster and more accurate truck loading. The silos are charged by belt conveyors with automatic distributors.7. Increased shipping bin capacity (40,000 tons at Whyalla and 6O,OOO tons being built at Koolan Island) caters for the bigger vessels now in use and envisaged for the future. Automatic travelling distributors deliver ore to the bins in layers to ensure, maximum mixing and a more uniform grade for blast furnaces.INTRODUCTIONThe Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd has six major crushing plants in Australia at its principal sources of raw material. These are at Iron Knob bench G, Iron Knob scree ore plant, Iron Baron, and Cockatoo Island, all of which are ironstone operations. The other two plants are at Rapid Bay, a limestone quarry, and at Ardrossan, which is the Company's only source of dolomite.

The Golden Cross low sulfidation epithermal deposit occurs in pervasively altered andesite of the Waipupu Formation and in the Waiharakeke Dacite. The unaltered, post-mineral Whakamoehau Andesite overlies these units. The Empire zone of the Golden Cross deposit contains a stockwork which is currently mined by open pit methods, and a series of veins that are mined underground. Alteration envelops both the underground and open pit mineralisation. The core of the alteration zone contains silicification, as quartz veins, and adularia. Shallow portions of the system contain illite-smectite and a thermally unstable chlorite, tentatively identified as corrensite, which pass downward into illite and chlorite, respectively. Replacement calcite occurs widely throughout the altered zone; pyrite is nearly ubiquitous. This alteration assemblage indicates formation from near-neutral alkali chloride waters. A late, post-mineralisation alteration assemblage of calcite, smectite, illitesmectite, kaolinite and siderite presumably formed from weakly acidic, steam-heated CO2-rich waters.   We have identified eight stages of vein formation: (1) sulfide veins, (2) black veins, (3) massive veins, (4) banded veins, (5) thin white veins, (6) crumbly veins, (7) massive/platy calcite veins, and (8) flattened rhomb calcite veins. Gold mineralisation occurred relatively early in the lifetime of the system, dominantly during 2 through 4. The late calcite veins (7 and 8) and early sulfide veins (1) are barren.

When asked to lecture at Bendigo on the geological factors that determine the depths of ore deposits, I hesitated for a little before agreeing to lecture on the theory of deep ores in the city world famous as the pioneer of deep gold mining. If there be one place, wherein the conditions of deep-seated ore deposits should be sufficiently well understood, it is the city where the 180 mine made its bold plunge to previously neglected depths; and where the record of that famous mine has been broken by the skill of the managers, and the pluck of the proprietors, of the New Chum Railway and Lazarus mines.In the face of such practical triumphs, theoretical discussion may seem a waste of time, especially since it is often dedared that the existence of such deep-seated ores was denied by geological theory. This assertion is, however, startling since the oldest and best supported geoiogical theory of ore deposits, has taught for more than a century tliat ores must descend far below the regions of practical mining. This charge against Victorian geologists is generally based on opinions attributed to the late Sir Fredrick McCoy. It has been repeatedly affirmed that he declared that gold cannot occur pelow a depth of 300 feet. But so far I have not been able to discover that McCoy ever made any such assertion or ever held such a view.

Since the end of World War n, many important developments have taken place in the investigation of the phenomenon of brittle fracture in mild steel. Fractures in certain classes of welded ships, in welded bridges, penstocks, etc., focussed a great deal of attention on the interrelationships of design factors, service conditions, and steel quality on the generation of catastrophic failures.Much publicity has been given these major failures, and there is perhaps a tendency to forget that mild steel, under certain conditions, as well known to behave in a brittle fashion in a wide range of everyday engineering applications.For instance, many who are connected with the haulage and lifting of heavy loads will be familiar with the bright "crystalline" fractures of crane hooks and chains which sometimes follow sudden jarring; those concerned with the heavy pressing and shaping of steel plate will not be unaware that at times sudden brittle splits or tears will develop for no obvious reason in, say, rolled pipes or in dishings.In fact it will be evident upon reflection that in many cases the conditions which mild steel has to withstand during processing into an engineering part or structure are more severe than those it wili be called upon to endure during service. In this sense brittle fractu;res in mild steel are much more frequent than are commonly supposed.Two modes of fracture are now generally recognised to occur in metals, namely, shear and cleavage. Deposits of the Reefton Goldfield, West Coast, New Zealand, are hosted on N-NE striking, upright folds of the Greenland Group. High-grade quartz lodes are hosted on axial planar shears, typically have short strike lengths, and form shoots that pitch steeply on the hosting shears. Deposits within the field area of a detailed structural study share these characteristics. Field mapping and microstructural analysis have demonstrated that the Greenland Group was affected by a multideformational sequence. Gold mineralisation is hosted on shears axial planar to the F2 folds, but occurred during a subsequent deformation event (D4). Deformation during D4 resulted from N-NE directed shortening, near parallel to the trend of the F2 folds. This event produced F4 kink folds that were accommodated by layer parallel slip on S2 parallel shears, gold mineralisation during D4 being confined to the dilational hinges of F4 kink folds. The semi-brittle nature of D4 allowed the formation of stockwork veining and disseminated mineralisation within the F4 hinge zones. Most deposits within the goldfield are similar to those within the field area, and are interpreted to have been mineralised during D4. The two largest known deposits within the goldfield, however, are distinct. The Blackwater Deposit, striking parallel to the hosting folds, has a combined strike length of 1 km. The Globe-Progress Deposit is hosted on an E-W striking discordant shear in which a brittle zone of disseminated mineralisation encompasses high-grade quartz lodes. The characteristics that distiguish the Globe and Blackwater deposits may be due to formation before and after D4 respectively. Detailed field mapping in the vicinity of known deposits throughout the goldfield will further refine the relationships between the F2 folds, later deformations and the localisation of ore deposits. Additional mapping may also help constrain the position, orientation and extent of additional orebodies.

The Huntly West Mine has undergone significant changes in the last two years, which will affect the remainder of the mine's life. The paper describes the evolvement of plans and an overview of the technical considerations made in planning for and implementing the first New Zealand longwall operation. The technical investigations involve the longwall equipment, exploration, ventilation and strata control. The focus on these areas was to ensure that unacceptable project risks were addressed. Implementation of longwall mining at West Mine is planned in three phases, Development, Panel One extraction trial, and Full Longwall operation.   At present the development phase is complete, longwall installation is in progress and production start-up is planned for the end of August, 1991.

In considering the preparation of any paper concerning bearing metals, one feels a certain amount of diffidence in venturing into a field which has been capably explored at great length and in great detail during recent years. Many excellent articles have appeared in technical literature, dealing with the general theory of bearings and of bearing metals, the properties of white metals of the tin-base and lead-base types, and of the recently developed lead-bronzes.The justification for this further excursion into the field lies in the fact that it treats a branch of the bearing metal family which has so far received very little attention, and that of a somewhat sketchy nature, in published papers.The author's object is to give some outline of the history, development, present status and possibilities of the cadmium-base bearing metal alloys, particularly those in which copper is the main alloying element.GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS.It is desirable that attention should first of all be given to the general theory, constitution, and necessary attributes of bearing metals, in order that some of the problems met with during the development work may be better appreciated.Despite some evidence to the contrary, it is fairly generally maintained that an alloy for bearing metal use should be of a heterogeneous nature. It should consist of particles of a hard constituent uniformly distributed through a softer matrix.The basic idea is that the hard constituent should actually bear the load and resist wear, while the matrix imparts the necessary ductility and allows the bearing to align itself on the shaft in service.
