This paper extends the existing knowledge associated with the design and placement of prefabricated pastefill barricades through a consideration of asymmetric drive geometry and conditions. The load capacity of prefabricated barricades and their failure modes are considered in relation to abutment geology and barricade geometry that includes curvature and span and drive geometry that includes abutment angles, haunch angles and misalignment. Design charts are provided for typical barricade sizes to provide general guidance for design capacities and optimising location placement based on asymmetric drive geometry. A recent barricade failure is considered in relation to the drive geometry and the potential impact it had on the installed capacity.

Anglo Gold AshantiÆs Sunrise Dam operation is located in Western Australia approximately 55 km south of the town of Laverton. Currently, the mine is producing from both its open pit and underground operations and is planning a significant step change in underground production as the pit phases out. The mine ventilation system is arranged in three independent ventilation districts: Astro, GQ and Cosmo. The future ventilation infrastructure requires significant upgrades to keep up with the increased tonnage. In the short term, increased production is planned for the GQ district as well as for Vogue, which is an extension in the Cosmo ventilation district. In the long term, however, Vogue is likely to become the centre of attention for mining activity.This paper explores several ventilation scenarios which include upgrading the existing fan stations, rentals, establishing a common ventilation backbone, and establishing new upcast infrastructure for GQ to support the short-term production increase. These developments were modelled using ventilation network simulation software to determine airflow distribution and fan operating points for each option. For the GQ area, with its short-term increase in production, each option is evaluated for total owning cost by considering capital and operating costs over a three-year period. For Vogue, which is to become the main focus of mining in the future, a different strategy is followed in analysing the ventilation requirements. Instead of considering different short-term options, a number of staged upgrades are considered to achieve the desired production rates.This paper summarises the planning criteria, airflow requirements, ventilation infrastructure requirements, and economic analysis associated with the conceptual ventilation system design. X-ray diffraction techniques are commonly used in the identification and quantification of fine-grained materials. A relationship exists between the size of crystals in a sample and the degree to which they diffract X-rays. The Scherrer equation relates the broadness of diffraction peaks to the size of crystals responsible for diffraction (Klug and Alexander, 1974). Relatively large crystals of the order of I - 10 ¦m strongly diffract X-rays; the diffractogram of such crystals exhibit narrow intense peaks. As the size of the crystals in a sample is reduced, diffraction peaks become broader and less intense. Crystals less than 10 nm generally exhibit broad, diffuse and low intensity peaks. Some material is so fine-grained and poorly-diffracting that X-ray patterns show very little information in a normal one-hour scan thereby necessitating very long acquisition times of up to 12 hours. The term poorly-diffracting material (PDM) was coined for such material found within the bauxite deposit of Weipa, northern Queensland (Tilley and Eggleton, 1994; 1996). Common regolith minerals such as hematite, goethite and layer silicate clays are quite commonly fine enough to possess a poorly-diffracting character. Noncrystalline and poorly crystalline Fe-Si-Al-oxyhydroxides such as allophane, opal, ferrihydrite and hisingerite, have either a nondiffracting (amorphous) or poorly-diffracting nature (Eggleton, 1987).

The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Lld near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation.The economics of this exercise were considerably enhanced in 1994 by changing the project's principal product from nickel-oxide sinter to refined high-purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site.Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to change completely the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.The changes have meant that the project is no longer limited to selling lower-value oxide sinter to a relatively small number of large stainless steel mills. In the past year sales of the new high purity nickel metal products have expanded to include a broad range of international customers in the special alloy, foundry and chemical industries.

The blasting process involves a complex interaction of a delayed sequence of moving sources of seismic energy which produce nonlinear behaviour near the blast holes. A deterministic description of this nonlinear behaviour represents a formidable problem. The modelling of blast vibrations remote from the blast source may use some of the primary features of the blast design such as charge type, charge weight and initiation sequence. Such modelling of blast vibrations usually assumes linear behaviour remote from the blast holes. Site specific charge weight scaling laws may be used to predict the blast vibration levels with relatively poor accuracy. An important ingredient which is missing from charge weight scaling laws is the seismic source wavelet emanating from each blast hole. The present paper considers some approaches which may be used to determine a suitable source wavelet. The wavelets are suitable for use in the region where linearity may be assumed. In that region, it is possible to model the attenuation and scattering of the seismic wave as it propagates from the blast source to the measurement location.

The building is a lofty, well-ventilated one of hardwood frame, with galvanized-iron walls and roof, and consists of five spans running north and south, covering a total length of 236 ft. Each span is composed of nine bays of 1:3-ft. centres, making the total width of the building 117 ft. The refinery is situated conveniently at a distance of 100 yds from the smelters. Through the third span of the building runs a 5-ton electric overhead travelling crane, of a 3-motor type, with a span of 29 ft. The crane runway extends over a railway line, which connects the smelters to the refinery. This crane is llsed for handling bullion, coal, melting kettles, lead pumps, &c. A 3-ton crane of similar type, but with a 50-ft. span, runs through the fifth span of the building and also extends over the railwav line alreadv mentioned. This crane is used to load the soft lead into railway trucks, or to stack lead awaiting shipment in the area covered by the crane's operations.

With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. Grade control systems within Rio Tinto Iron Ore have proven to be robust, when mining full benches. The Hope Downs 1 operation hosting two Marra Mamba Iron Formation deposits (North and South Deposits) presents a new challenge, where increased mining selectivity due to moderately plunging N-verging folds has made flitch mining necessary in the South Deposit. Poor flitch blasthole sample duplicate results in South Deposit over a 12 month period, compared to North Deposit, have highlighted concerns with grade predictions. In contrast a new grade control methodology (grade splitting) was proposed to alleviate blasthole sampling bias, utilising geological mapping and mineralogical logging, currently practised throughout Rio Tinto Iron Ore Pilbara operations, to estimate theoretical grades for each flitch from a single blast cone assay. To assess this method, reverse circulation holes (RC) were twinned to blastholes establishing an ‘actual’ grade. These blastholes were assayed using current flitch sampling techniques where: flitch positions were estimated, flitch positions were marked with paint, and a full cone sample was taken for ‘grade splitting’. Using these data sets multiple grade predictions were produced, then analysed using Half Absolute Relative Difference (HARD) statistical analysis. In addition to testing these grade control methodologies two other findings were ascertained: an inherent bias in blasthole assays exists particularly in the top flitch, where an average absolute difference of 0.6 per cent in SiO2 and 0.42 per cent Al2O3 was measured; and assays derived where kaolin rich soft shales are intersected were less representative. This is likely to be due to these materials not being properly represented in blast cones. Grade splitting accurately estimated block chemistry, except for a slight under-prediction in Al2O3 and P compared to current grade control methodologies. This method is a viable alternative where grade distribution is stratigraphically controlled.

A soil cover isolates potentially acid-forming (PAF) mine wastes from atmospheric interaction and thereby mitigates acid mine drainage. As a cover that comprises either a single layer or a composite barrier, it essentially manages percolating rain water from flowing into these PAF materials and minimises air flow as oxygen has low diffusivity in saturated soils. However, the availability of suitable soils as cover materials is limited, especially in arid and semi-arid regions where weathering rates are low.This paper investigates the potential use of mine wastes as cover materials in a water-shedding soil cover in north-west Queensland. Four cover trial plots were built using mine wastes as cover materials. Each 2.3 m cover trial plot consisted of a 1.5 m soil cover made up of waste rocks and fines, a 0.5 m drainage layer that consisted of 0.1 m waste rock aggregates and a base layer made up of blended mine tailings. The hydrologic properties of cover materials were determined by in situ measurements and laboratory experiments, which, in turn, were used as input in a numerical model that described the cover’s transient soil moisture profile. The successful performance of the cover is reliant on the long-term stable geochemical behaviour of the substrate used as cover material. Therefore, investigations were carried out to determine the geochemical properties of the cover materials constructed from benign waste rock using static and kinetic tests, with the objective to increase the level of certainty of the material’s benign characteristics. The problem of stability of the development working at the great depths of coal winning is of great seriousness. Numerous researches of the problem were carried out in the USSR, the results of which determined that raising of resistance of existing support will not lead to a considerable rise of working output. It is necessary to try to find ways at the expense of heightening the support ability of rock massif. For these purposes it is necessary to direct it correctly and in proper time. While carrying the development working the most intensive deformations of rock occur at a depth of 30m from the entry face. The zone of destruction of rock around the work is realised here for 60 to 70 percent. These facts show that in influence zone of entry face a kind of embryo of the working steadiness is forming, which greatly determines its following conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to begin direction of mining pressure around the work directly in a face.Complex research of the mechanism was carried out starting with the effect of moving face upon the surrounding rock massif. It was ascertained, that the zone influenced by the face is a section of 5 equivalent diameters of the work by the length within which the rock of the sides, roof and floor, experience the cyclical influence of stresses at the time of cyclical shift of the face. The elastoplastec deformation is occurring with it at the moments of rock removal and the deformation of creeping takes place at such intervals.

The Australian coal industry has undergone sevenfold growth over the last 30 years and since 1985 has been the world's largest coal exporter. Three quarters of Australia's coal production is exported so its future is dependent on it remaining internationally competitive with other energy sources and other coal exporting countries. Coal is likely to increase its share of the energy market during the nine- ties as oil prices increase, new coal-fired capacity is commissioned and some form of nuclear energy is developed which is of acceptable safety standards to the community for use in the 21st century. Gas may take a part of coal's anticipated market share by the Year 2000. While coal exports will increase from China, Colombia, Indonesia and Venezuela and satisfy some of this additional coal demand Australia will also expand its export production, due to its existing advantages. The United States, Canada, South Africa, Poland and USSR seem unlikely to enjoy the same degrees of expansion and some, particularly Poland and USSR, will decline. Australia will always find it difficult to compete in the more distant markets due to levels of ocean freight, although its high quality coals will tend to partly offset such disadvantage.

Fiji is a developing nation that relies on economic opportunities and recently experienced increased interest in mining and mineral exploration that could potentially benefit the country. In order to understand the lack of, or failure of, past rehabilitation activity, this study applied risk-based approaches to identify the significance of activities or actions applicable to rehabilitation of post-mined land in Fiji. This involved the use of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk methodologies, which allow assessment and evaluation of mechanisms of mining administration and practices, as well as rehabilitation methods and approaches that have been applied successfully to post-mined land in other countries with similar environmental and climatic conditions and social and regulatory environments to Fiji. The semi-quantitative risk-based technique followed an earlier approach applied for mine closure by Laurence (2006) and provided a systematic way to assess and evaluate rehabilitation issues that were identified on-site by assessors, who were able to estimate through expert judgement the likelihood and consequences based on conditions, situations observed and circumstances on-site. It demonstrated that experienced professionals could reproducibly score likelihood and consequence of selected items relevant to mine site rehabilitation, despite the wide-ranging issues identified during post mined land rehabilitation. The quantitative risk-based approach was adopted as a method to determine environmental bonds for mining projects using the assessment of consequences and likelihood results from the semi-quantitative approach, then incorporating unit cost of materials or activities for local conditions required to fully rehabilitate each issue at net present value. During the first five years of operation, the Lihir gold mine has steadily increased plant throughput rate to over 4 Mtpa, well above the original design capacity of 2.8 Mtpa. Understanding how future variations in ore type impact on plant performance has been an integral part of LihirÆs development program. This paper discusses the key drivers for significant improvements to the plant, including a second oxygen plant, a pilot flotation plant, an autoclave heat recovery circuit, a pebble crushing circuit and additional autoclave feed pumping capacity. The result is a process plant with the flexibility to accommodate variations in ore type without significant loss of throughput.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralized bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulphides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralization. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphio column and mineralogy of the sediments.

Work practices involved in shaft construction can be aligned with current industry standard operating practices. However, the working environment during conventional shaft construction introduces unique conditions which can not always be overcome by hard engineering controls. To provide an improved working environment, future shaft diameters will generally be greater than has historically been the case for the Australian hard rock mining industry. This paper aims to explore both what can be constructed from the contractors perspective, and how does an owner extract maximum business efficiency from an asset that in many ways is likely to be larger, more complex and more expensive than initially envisaged.Newcrest Mining Limited, or an associated company, has constructed two major shafts over the last seven years. In both cases, Byrnecut Mining, or an associated company, was the contractor engaged for the shaft sinking activity. The first is the 1127 m deep, 7.0 m diameter production and intake airway at the Telfer Gold Mine, the second is a 295 m deep, 5.5 m diameter split shaft at the Gosowong Gold Project in Indonesia that was primarily designed as both an intake and exhaust airway. Importantly both shafts are designed to provide emergency egress from the respective underground operations.From an Australian shaft sinking perspective, the construction of these two shafts resulted in the following learnings: •constructability is of equal importance to desired functionality;•allow six months of interactive design between the owner/engineer/contractor/regulator to get it right;•shaft sinking and equipping are intimately entwined, therefore engineering of both needs to be complete prior to any activity commencing; and•the mobilisation of both equipment and experienced personnel to a new shaft sink takes up to eight months.Shaft sinking is not extinct in the Australian hard rock mining industry. But, if you are considering constructing a shaft, approach it as a long life asset, front end planning to a high level of detail is required to unlock its full value. Think – plan – think and remember it’s going to take 12 months to get from the whiteboard to firing the first cut.

The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control in New South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

Flocculation behaviour of six different dolomite samples, four from the Florida mining district, one from Perry, South Georgia and another from New Jersey was examined using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. The samples were similar in chemical composition, however the porosity of the samples from the Florida mining district was higher than the others. FT-IR, adsorption and surface modification by leaching revealed that flocculation was directly related to the presence of isolated hydroxyl groups on the surface. The adsorption mechanism was believed to be hydrogen bonding of the ether oxygen of PEO with isolated -OH sites on the solid.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited mines and pro cesses iron ore from two orebodies at Tom Price and Paraburdoo, situated in the North West of Western Australia. Conventional open pit mining methods are used at both sites in that material is drilled and blasted in benches, loaded by shovels and hauled to the Primary Crushers or dumped on waste or low grade material stockpiles. The present drilling fleet, consisting of eight high capacity Bucyrus Erie Rotary drills has evolved from an initial fleet of a large number of small percussion rigs. There are significant physical differences between the ore types encountered at both mines which nec- essitate the drilling of smaller diameter blast holes at Paraburdoo than those at Tom Price. The drilling practice at each site is dis- cussed, with examples of performance achieve- ments under varying drilling conditions.

Throughout the study phases (scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility) of new mining projects one is forced to work with and make predictions based upon limited date obtained from diamond and reverse circulation drill holes. These data are extrapolated to determine how much of the valuable metal is present in the ground, how it can be recovered it and the efficiency of this recovery. Mining methods to extract the ore are investigated with forecasts made regarding excavation stoping stability and performance in an attempt to optimise production. Extraction and use of rock mass data for use in characterising the mechanical behaviour of the rock mass is no exception. One often relies heavily upon the use of empirical charts developed over many years on hundreds of case histories based upon rock mass characterisation schemes. This is largely successful and indicative of what one might expect. However specific site characteristics can always play a significant role, and are not necessarily apparent in diamond drill core. Feasibility studies for the Favona orebodies indicated that the rock mass was generally poor to extremely poor, and that stoping conditions would be difficult in all of the orebodies for various reasons. A range stope performances were achieved ranging from very good to very poor and in some cases unexpected results were achieved. A comparison is made between what was actually achieved and what was expected since stoping commenced in 2007. Explanations are attempted for differences in stoping performance and, in some cases, unexpected results at the Favona underground mine are attempted.
