IV. THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN STEEL AND IRON. It would be well to decide on a definite carbon-content to serve as a boundary line between ingot-iron and ingot-steel, between puddled-iron and puddled-steel, and between any other varieties of wrought-iron and weld-steel. Two plans have been considered. One is to draw this line at 0.32 per cent. of carbon or its equivalent in other elements, for the reason that this carbon-content appears to correspond to the critical point, 0, in the diagrams of Roberts-Austen and Rooze-boom.8 This has the merit of corresponding to a definite physical boundary. The other plan is to draw the boundary at 0.20 per cent. of carbon, because this is a convenient place to separate the important classes " soft steel " and " half-hard steel," so that if this point was adopted "ingot-iron " would be synonymous with "soft steel," and " ingot-steel " would be the equivalent of the two classes, " half-hard steel " and " hard steel."

The term chromite is often used to cover all chrome ores and concentrates which are the designations actually employed by most industrial users and producers. Chromite is, of course, the predominant mineral in chrome ores which are aggregates of chromite and gangue minerals, most commonly magnesian silicates. Most chrome ores now used are petrographically chromitites which is a rock, rather than an individual mineral term. The title of this chapter, following past usage, is meant in the broad sense. Chromite is the only primary commercial source of chromium. This book is intended to deal only with nonmetallic minerals and rocks. Chromite uses are both metallic (ferroalloys) and nonmetallic (refractories and chemicals), but any discussion of mineralogy, geology, and mining is common for all types. A number of the major commercial ores are interchangeable, and their uses are determined by economic considerations. Mineralogy COMPOSITION [Chromite is a term embracing a wide range of chromium-bearing spinel*-group minerals the compositions of which can be expressed as (Mg,Fe2+)0.(Cr,AI,Fe3+ )203.t This can be further generalized to R2+O.R23+03 and the molecular RO: R,03 ratio is generally close to one. The exact composition may be arbitrarily expressed as a solid solution of six end-members, MgAI2O4, MgCr2O4, MgFe2O4 FeCr2O4, FeA12O4, and Fe2+.Fe23+04 with the proportions of each stated or plotted in the six-cornered prism of Johnston and Stevens61 or this scheme may be simplified to comprise only three endmembers making up a composition triangle, Fig 1. WET-PROCESS coal-washing tables as we know them today have been in use in this country for approximately 25 years. The literature records only a few table installations worthy of note prior to adoption of the present-day differential-motion table. According to Phillip,1 six Campbell bumping tables were being operated by the St. Bernard Coal Co., Earlington, Ky., in 1893. As late as 1923, according to Richardson, 2 such tables were in operation in the Rosedale washery of the Cambria Steel Co., at Johnstown, Pa. Bumping tables probably were not used to any considerable extent except in the plant at Earlington, and at two or three plants in Pennsylvania, but they may be considered as. forerunners of the present-day coal-washing table. The transition from bumping tables to the type of tables now in use signalized a revolutionary change in table design. The advantages of the new design over the old were so outstanding as to make its adoption inevitable. BUMPING TABLES Bumping tables, as the name implies, utilized a bumping action for conveying the refuse and discharging it over the refuse end. The tables were hung from rods attached to overhead supporting beams. A shaft and cam arrangement at one end of the table served as the actuating mechanism and imparted to the table an endwise, back-and-forth, swinging motion. A bumping block was fixed in the proper position at the shaft end, so that the table would strike against it at the end of each backward swing. The hanger rods or stirrups were so adjusted as to give the table a slight uphill slope toward the refuse end; that is, the end next to the driving mechanism. The feed box was near the upper end of the table and designed to spread the mixture of coal and water over the width of the table. Wash water was added a short distance below the feed box. With the table in motion and coal mixed kith water being fed to it through the feed box, a certain amount of stratification took place, depositing heavy refuse at the bottom of the bed in contact with the surface of the table. Previous studies of plastic deformation of metals have emphasized the important role of bending and constraints during strain under relatively pure stresses.1"5 Some new phenomena such as early conjugate slip6 and polygonization7 are intimately concerned with the relief of bending stresses, the former by slip and the latter by a process analogous to re-crystallization. However, few analyses of the bending deformation of single crystals were found in the literature, and those8,9 are sufficiently previous to the modern interpretations of slip to invite further investigation in this area. The transverse bending mode of testing, using the two-point loading method, was selected because the center portion of the specimen may be considered as under a theoretically pure bending stress with a uniform bending moment. Considerable attention was given to both the lattice distortion and flow characteristics of the crystals during deformation. Experimental Proeedare A specimen under the action of equal and opposite couples at both ends is said to undergo pure bending. The shear and moment diagrams of a specimen under the two-point loading method of transverse bending are shown in Fig 1. The moment over the middle-third of the span is equal to PL/6, and the vertical shear is zero. Fig 2 (A) illustrates the stress distribution in the elastic range on a plane across the middle of the specimen. It can be seen that the normal stress has a maximum value at the extreme surfaces on the tension and compression sides, and decreases proportionately to zero as it approaches the neutral plane. However, when the plastic range is reached, the stress distribution is no longer a straight line relation, but changes in a manner which can be best illustrated as shown in Fig 2(B). The following calculation and stress analysis are mainly in accordance with the works reported by Timoshenkol0 and Kochendörfer.9 From the simple beam formula, the maximum normal stress will occur at the surface of the specimen. For a round specimen with a radius r and for a rectangular specimen with a height 2h and width 2b, the maximum normal stress, Sp, will be given by the following formulas: For round specimen: 2PL Sp = 3pr3 [1] For rectangular specimen: Sn = 8bh2 [2] Since it is reasonable to consider that slip takes place under the same conditions as in uniaxial loading, the resolved shear stress S?, along the operative slip direction will be as follows: For round specimen: 2PL sin x cos ? It was also reported by Kochenclorfer9 that the critical bending moment, that is, the bending moment exerted on the specimen to initiate slip, should be higher than the value given by the equations stated above. The softening temperature of coal ash, as determined in the laboratory, has been used for years as an indication of the tendency of coal to form clinker and slag. It has not, however, provided an index of unfailing and complete reliability for forecasting the relative performance of different coals, even in the same plant and under the same conditions of operation. A large amount of investigation has been done in attempts to account for this, but practically all of this has been in the direction of studying the chemical constitution of coal ash. Much has been learned, but without much progress toward a better practical application of knowledge to the selection of coal. There has always seemed to be an important factor that eluded discovery. It has long been recognized that the ash-softening temperature as determined in the laboratory had one weakness, in that it represented the temperature at which a thorough mixture of the whole ash of the coal would melt, the mixing having taken place before the heal was applied. This does not, of course, simulate what takes place in practice. With certain exceptions, which will be noted later, almost all of the investigations that have been made, especially the chemical studies of coal ash, have likewise dealt with a mixture of the whole ash in the coal. The present investigation differs from these fundamentally in its approach to the problem. It started from the observation that some clinkering and slagging obviously takes place in a boiler furnace at temperatures below the laboratory-determined ash-softening temperature of the coal. Knowing that coal as it is shipped to market is a heterogeneous mixture of diverse mineral substances, each of which may act independently of the others in the initial stages of clinker and slag formation, it seemed logical to investigate separately the softening temperature of the ash in physically separable portions of the coal, and to determine the relative quantities of ash contributed by each portion. While the data are far from complete, covering as they do only a few coals, and while the conclusions to be reached from the data at this stage arc, in some measure, speculative, they are presented at this time because

The Sierra Mojada mining district is situated in western Coahuila, about 8 km. east of the Chihuahua state line, and about one-half way from the northern to the southern extremity of the state. It is at the terminus of the Mexican Northern R. R., 125 km. northeast of Escal6n, Chihuahua; also about, 240 km. due west of Monclova, Coahuila. The altitude is approximately 1500 m. above sea level. The Sierra Mojada valley is about 10 km. long, from east to west, with a width of 1 to 2 km. It is approached from the east through the Puerto del Oro, where the Mexican Northern R. R. enters the valley; the slope from west to east is gentle. The Sierra Mojada, of which about 300 m. is an almost vertical wall, bounds the valley on the south side; on the north side, the slope to the crest of Sierra Planchada is more gradual, rising only 200 or 300 m. above the valley. Water is relatively scarce in the district, and there are no running streams. The rainy season, usually beginning at the middle of June, lasts through July, and occasionally into August or September. In some years the rains fail entirely. The slope of the ground is such that nearly all the water immediately runs off. The arroyos along the flanks of the mountains are not very deep, but in heavy rains, sometimes approaching cloudbursts, a tremendous volume of water rushes down them, carrying large boulders. A certain amount of seepage collects in the agglomerate, lying below the conglomerate, and is retained in the local fractures. Some shallow wells have been sunk in this agglomerate, and one well over 150 m. deep was sunk on the Volcan ranch, supplying about 76 1. (20 gal.) per min. A considerable supply of water is collected in large earth reservoirs in and below the town of Esmeralda. In ordinary years this supply will last until January or February, after which the Volcan well has to be depended on until the next rainy season. Vegetation is scarce, aside from scanty scrub oak and other brush in the mountains, and a few mezquite, locust, pepper, and cottonwood trees

This paper is a continuation of two earlier papers,12 and presents new data on the grindability of various ores and other materials—the results of several years of intermittent research work on the nature of grinding and interpretation of test results. It is divided into five parts: 1. The tabulated results of several hundred grindability tests on a wide variety of ores. 2. A method of correcting screen analyses and calculating from them the surface and other properties. 3. A description of a new method of measuring the "surface energy" of an ore by pendulum impact tests. 4. Test results. 5. A general discussion of the test results and their application to grinding problems. 1. GRindability of Various Ores This part is a continuation of the paper listed as reference No. 1. The method of testing is described in detail in that paper. The sample to be tested is crushed to all through 6 mesh in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening in closed circuit with a screen. Of this sample 700 C.C. is ground dry in a laboratory ball mill under constant conditions of mill speed and ball charge in closed circuit with a screen of the desired size at 250 per cent circulating load. The mill is cylindrical, 12 by 12 in., and rotates at 70 r.p.m. It contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams and ranging from 1½ to ¾ in. in diameter. Each test is continued for a sufficient number of periods to establish equilibrium at 250 per cent circulating load, or until the composition of the circulating load is constant for successive periods. Tests are conducted at the mesh size to which the ore is to be ground in practice, and the results are expressed as the net production in grams of screen undersize per revolution of the mill. An equation has been derived for use in calculating the sandface pressure of flowing gas wells in which the variation of the compressibility factor of the gas with pressure is taken into consideration. This variation due to compressibility has been put into both graphical and tabular form. Comparison of calculated results with field measured results were made on 20 dry gas wells from a given field and 11 distillate wells from different fields. The agreement between calculated and observed results is good. In addition to their use in the calculation of sandface pressures of flowing wells, the factors can be used in the direct calculation of the static bottom hole pressure of gas wells, the capacity of gas transmission lines, and in the calculation of the theoretical isothermal horsepower necessary to compress a natural gas. Examples demonstrating the use of various equations are given. INTRODUCTION Many of the equations used to calculate the sandface pressures of flowing gas wells from well head data do not take into consideration rigorously the deviation of the natural gas from ideal gas behavior. For low pressure wells this error is not serious. For high pressure wells flowing at high rates this error call be serious. Sandface pressures are used to determine the producing capacity of gas wells as shown in the U. S. Bureau of Mines' Monograph 7.' An equation has been derived for use in calculating the sandface pressure of flowing gas wells in which the variation of compressibility of the gas with pressure is taken into consideration. This variation due to compressibility has been put into both graphical and tabular form. In addition to their use in the calculation of sandface pressures, these "factors" can also be used to give a direct solution in the calculation of the static bottom hole pressure of gas wells, the calculation of the capacity of gas transmission lines, and the calculation of the isothermal horsepower necessary to compress a gas. CALCULATION OF SANDFACE PRESSURE OF FLOWING GAS WELLS The starting point in the derivation of any specific flow equation is an energy balance on the fluid flowing between any two points in the system. The liquidus line on the phase diagram for temperature versus composition of a binary alloy system, representing the boundary between the homogeneous melt and the heterogeneous melt plus solid, besides showing the minimum casting temperature, is useful in determining eutectic compositions and the presence of phase changes such as peritectic transformations and intermetallic compound formation. The liquidus often is determined by the cooling curves of thermal analysis, but supercooling frequently occurs, so that the temperature values are low. An alternative method, the one employed here, consists of determining the composition of samples of the melts from heterogeneous alloys that are at equilibrium. With meticulous attention to fundamentals, this method is capable of yielding values limited in precision only by the temperature control and measurement and analyses. Apparatus By starting, on the one hand, with a supersaturated solution and allowing the excess solute to precipitate, and on the other hand with an undersaturated solution and allowing more of the solute to be dissolved, both processes being carried out at the same temperature, equilibrium may be said to have been approached from both directions; that is, from above and from below. If the analyses show the solutions to contain the same fraction of solute when equilibrium has been approached from above and from below, one is assured that equilibrium has been reached in both determinations. In order to carry out such determinations, it is necessary to have equipment for obtaining and maintaining the proper temperatures; for holding the melt, measuring its temperature, and stirring, sampling and analyzing it. The present work required temperatures from 420° to 900°C. The equipment consisted of: A furnace, which was a vertical alundum tube, 13/4-in. diameter inside and 18 in. long, wound with Nichrome resistance wire, surrounded by a 3-in. i.d. alundum tube wound for 5 in. of length near each end, for compensation of end losses. This muffle was contained in an iron shell with Transite end plates, the intervening space being packed with Sil-O-Cel. The outside dimensions of the furnace were 12 in. in diameter by 181/2 in. in height. Heating current was supplied by three independent variable-voltage transformers (Variac), one connected to each end compensator winding and manually controlled, and one connected to the main winding through a series resistance of 5 ohms. The key to maximum production of ingots for the war effort is maximum production of pig iron. For any given furnace and ore, the most important single influence on blast-furnace production is the quality of the furnace coke. It is generally recognized that undoubtedly deterioration of Pittsburgh coking coals will be accelerated by the depletion of some of the better grades of coal; the extension of mine mechanization, with attendant degradation of coal quality; and the opening of new coal fields, some of which are known to be fairly high in sulphur. All of these factors, contributing as they do to higher ash and sulphur, and not infrequently to inferior quality of coke, made it desirable that an extensive study be undertaken to determine the effect of washing some coals that closely approximate the average chemical composition of coking coals to be expected in the future, by the subsidiaries of the United States Steel Corporation in the Pittsburgh district. It was deemed advisable to study the improvement obtained by washing such coals and to determine the need for supplementing the existing coal washery at Clairton to assure continued maximum production of pig iron from presently available furnace stacks. The existence of the cog! washer at Clairton made ii possible to conduct tests on coals used in raw form and on similar coals after washing. This study covers an investigation of the quality of furnace coke as affected by washing coking coals, and is confined to the use of IOO per cent high-volatile Pittsburgh seam coals from Fayette and Greene Counties in the manufacture of furnace coke. It covers the improvement in chemical and physical properties as well as the degree of uniformity in coke obtained by washing these coals, and includes the effect on blast-furnace production and practice. The test period involved is four months; the plants, Clairton by-product coke plant, and the Carrie No. I and No. 2 blast furnaces at Rankin, Pa., Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation. Clairton By-product Coke Plant and Coai, Washer The Clairton by-product coke plant carbonizes 30,800 net tons of coal daily in 22 batteries containing 1482 ovens. Three oven sizes are used, commonly known as wide, medium, and narrow types, recognizing the difference in oven width. These ovens also differ in height and length. The present coal washer has a daily capacity of approximately 14,000 tons, leaving I6,800 tons to be carbonized in raw form. Washed coal is used on all the narrow ovens and on three of the six batteries with ovens of medium width, raw coals being used pn all the remaining ovens. The customary arrangement is 7

Cardox, which consists essentially of a steel tube containing carbon dioxide compressed to the liquid state, is a trade name designating a device used principally in coal mines to break down coal. The use of Cardox to break down coal was developed in the Middle Western coal fields around 1927 or 1928. At first, a large, heavy tube was used, requiring many parts. Through experimentation and technologic improvement, the weight of the tube has been brought down from 88 lb. to 20 lb. and the new, light tube makes use of larger volumes of CO2 at lower pressures than formerly was thought possible. This blasting method is extensively used today in coal mines and probably one tenth of the bituminous coal produced in the United States is prepared with Cardox. Construction and Application As used in the coal mine, Cardox looks like a piece of steel pipe 2 to 3 in. in diameter and 3 to 5 ft. long. When it is necessary to fire a shot, the tube is wired with two leg wires that are long enough so that when the tube is pushed the desired distance into the hole the wires will protrude 5 to 6 in. It has been found that No. 18 insulated copper annunciator wire is the best material for leg wires. A two-conductor rubber-covered shot-firing cable of sufficient length is then attached to the leg wires. A 2 to 6-volt current is applied, either by means of shot-firing batteries or the standard type of shot-firing generator. Upon the application of the current, the charge in the cartridge is set off. Because the breaking action upon the coal is supplied by the relatively slow physical expansion of the carbon dioxide gas rather than by the rapid chemical formation of gases as in more familiar explosives, the result is a slow heaving action, somewhat similar to that produced by black powder, rather than a shap detonating effect. Permissible powder does its work at roughly ten times the pressures in use with Cardox. The escaped gas from a Cardox shot apparently works along the planes of weakness in the coal face, such as the coal cleats, the edges of the cut, and along the top of the seam, breaking off the coal toward the free faces and heaving the mass of coal outward. Cardox tubes are manufactured in various sizes to take care of variable conditions of seam size, undercut depth, cleatage, coal hardness, and so forth. The tubes range in diameter from 2 to 3 in. (Table I) and the normal CO2 charge is from 24 to 96 oz. For any one tube size, several sizes of shear disks are available, thus excellent control of the type of shooting desired is possible. In general, local experience and experimentation dictate the size of tube chosen for any particular job. For high coal, and deeper or wider cuts, a larger size is chosen to start with, and the opposite is true for low coal, softer coal, or small cuts. Of the several characteristics of a coal that influence its suitability for use in a given piece of burning equipment, the clinkering and slagging characteristics of the ash of the coal are highly important. They determine the maximum rate at which the coal may be burned on a stoker or in pulverized form without difficulty from damage to metal parts, from erosion of refractory walls, or from stoppage of gas passages by accumulation on the tubes. They also determine the minimum rate at which a slag-tap furnace may be operated without difficulty in removal of the ash in fluid form. Need for a Better Criterion In common with other producers and users of coal, the Northern Illinois Coal Corporation has long used the available methods for the measurement of the clinkering characteristics of coal ash, chemical composition and fusion temperature of the ash, as criteria for the selection of coal that would suit the particular requirements of its customers. These two available criteria have greatly helped in the problem of selection but it is unnecessary to dwell upon the fact that they are not completely adequate for the purpose. The composition of the ash and its clinkering tendency vary widely over the company's mining area. In a certain period, some years ago, an unusual amount of severe clinkering of the ash of coal shipped made extremely acute the need for a better criterion of the clinkering that might be expected. It was also desirable that the criterion result from a reasonably rapid method, so that the clinkering characteristics of the coal would be known before shipment. Complaints on the severe clinkering of the ash came from only a fraction of the output of the mine but the occurrence of the clinkering seemed quite unpredictable. Attempts to relate the chemical composition of the ash and the fusion temperatures to the clinkering were unsuccessful. Coal from the area of the mine in which the fusion temperature of the ash was the lowest gave the least trouble from clinker-ing. Chemical analysis of the ash from that section giving the most trouble showed high contents of iron and low contents of silica, but frequently these were not greatly different from those of coals that gave little trouble from clinker. Aside from the clinkering difficulty, the coal was quite satisfactory. The ash content was normal and high rates of burning could be obtained, but again and again such severe clinkering would occur that the furnace would be shut down because of the accumulation of clinker. Examination of the clinker from the customers' plants showed that the clinkers that adhered to the grates and fouled the fuel beds were hard, flat, dense, and usually dark in color. Coal that was satisfactory gave clinkers that were softer, bulky rather than flat, of low density, and usually lighter in color.

Introduction and Summary By "thermochemical factors" we refer to those variables which affect the net heat which must be put into the bath in order to make a heat of steel from any given set of charge materials. This is admittedly only one phase of the production rate problem. The whole problem includes also consideration of rate of charging, flame radiation intensity, rate of optimum fuel input obtainable without undue damage to the furnace structure and any variations in conditions such as stirring, slag volume or viscosity which affect the rate at which heat can flow down and away from those exposed surfaces where the heat is first received from the flame. Because a given type of charge in a shop is often considered as being nearly constant in both physical and chemical characteristics from one heat to another, and because such a state of affairs may be thought of as resulting in a reasonably constant net heat requirement, this requirement is usually neglected as an invariable, inevitable matter, about which nothing can be done. With normally variable charge, and variable percentages of limestone and cold pig, however, the net heat requirement can be subject to very appreciable change; it may also be affected by such things as the currently popular procedure of blowing oxygen into the bath. To bring the general problem of production rate into better perspective, therefore, it seems worthwhile to try to evaluate the net bath heat requirement and the amount by which it may change through variation in different factors. Because our calculated values of net heat are admittedly uncertain, we have tried to check them in part by statistical data on actual production rates over rather large groups of commercial heats. The results of calculation of net heat requirements in a wide range of actual commercial practices may first be summarized briefly. We find a wide range between the extremes of different practices, as would be expected, with duplex practice (essentially blown metal plus hot metal) having essentially a zero net heat requirement, an all-cold charge practice somewhat over I million Btu per ton of steel and a high hot metal practice about 0.75 million Btu per ton. Over the commercial range of scrap plus hot metal practice, increasing the percentage of hot metal from 40 to 78 pct, with other factors nearly constant, decreased the net heat by only some 5-10 pct. The net heat is increased by about 1.2 pct for each I pct of the metallic charge present as cold pig. Calculated values of oxygen supplied by air varied from about 25 up to 60 lb per ton of steel, and in a 60 pct hot metal practice, an increase from 32 to 52 Ib oxygen from air decreased the calculated net heat from 0.88 to 0.74 million Btu per ton. 'This paper discusses a method and apparatus for determining the dip of formations traversed by a drill hole, by means of electrical measurements in the hole. The process consists in recording the Spontaneous Potentials present along three oriented generatrices in the hole. By comparison of the three curves thus obtained, after application of a correction factor to compensate for any deviations of the hole, the dip angle and the dip direction are determined. Excellent accuracy is obtained for dip angles over 10°. Because the method is simp1e and the apparatus rugged, the measurements are rapid and reliable; consequently, they can be made at all the levels that are of interest at any time after the well has been drilled. Mechanical cores are not needed to evaluate the dips. A convenient, time-saving procedure is to perform the dipmeter survey at the time the electrical log is taken, using for both operations the same cable and truck. Actual examples of results obtained in wells of the Gulf Coast area are given. Introduction The problem of determining the angle and direction of the dip of the strata traversed by a drill hole has practical interest, and sometimes vital importance, which need not be emphasized to the oil industry. The need for that type of information has existed ever since wells have been drilled. Certainly it has not subsided, in spite of the numerous inventions and improvements made in other fields of the art of drill-hole exploration. The few examples given in this paper are but illustrative of this fact. In the past, methods have been devised, and used, to solve this problem, but generally they have met with limited success, possibly because they failed more or less to answer the requirements of a modern age for fast yet accurate measurements. If accurate, the results were obtained at the cost of very tedious and lengthy operations. The new S. P.* dipmeter service offered to the oil industry is the result of exhaustive and in this particular field. In 1032 a dipmeter and electromagnetic teleclinom-eter service was made available. The apparatus employed then was of a rather delicate and costly construction, and the measurements had to be made with precautions sometimes difficult to secure on the rig. Although the information given by the electromagnetic dipmeter was limited to the direction of the dip, very interesting results were obtained in California, Trinidad, Venezuela, Rumania and, most notably, in the Netherlands East Indies.+ Apparatus The S. P. dipmeter surveys present none of the drawbacks mentioned above. The apparatus is rugged and free from constructional complications, therefore well adapted to field use. Automatic recording of the radioactivity of the earth's formations provides a log of relative intensities that, if properly interpreted, can be applied to oil-field engineering. Production, engineering, and geological departments regard the radioactivity log as a forward step in the securing of more conclusive information for successful well completions. Explanations of the technique, together with some of the problems to which radioactivity logging have been applied, are presented in this paper. Introduction Those responsible for the completion of new oil and gas wells, or with planning workover operations on old wells, have followed closely the development of radioactivity well logging because they are interested in reducing the number of unknowns that usually are present in such work. Many operators have made use of the log, or are acquainted with at least one of the applications, but it is unlikely that any one operator is familiar with all of the many applications that are possible. The purpose of this paper is to present a representative example of each of the many applications, wherever the information has been released by an operator, and to illustrate by hypothetical examples other applications, releases for which have not been given. In this way, it is hoped that a better understanding of the scope of this new engineering tool may be obtained. Although the literature contains many references that describe in detail the theory, development, and application of radioactivity well logging, a brief discussion of the technique may be helpful to those who are investigating the subject for the first time. All rocks contain radioactive material in varying concentrations. In general, shales contain relatively more radioactive material than sandstones or limestones. These radioactive materials disintegrate with time into other materials of lower atomic weight, and in that process of disintegration the rocks are emitting many rays, the most penetrating of which is the gamma ray. The intensity of emission of the gamma ray is proportional to the quantities of radioactive materials present. A higher rate of emission would be observed, therefore, opposite a shale than opposite a sandstone or limestone. Since measurable intensities of gamma rays are capable of penetrating as many as five concentric strings of casing, and as the gamma-ray intensity is relative to the formations, the measurements of variations in gamma-ray intensities offer a means of identifying cased-off formations in their proper stratigraphic sequence. The Gamma-ray Curve The measurement of gamma-ray intensities is accomplished by means of an ioniza-tion chamber that consists of a heavy cylinder, about 3 ft. long, that contains two insulated electrodes and is filled with an inert gas under high pressure. The Republic district, Washington, is of new interest because of the discovery of new gold-silver ore within a unique structural pattern. The camp was revived in 1937 fol1owing installation of a plant to treat low-grade disseminated ore at Knob Hill and further stimulation followed discovery of "cross vein" breccia ores in 1939. Previous writers 1-2 ascribed the quartz veins to a latite porphyry stock, but are in disagreement as to its precise location and extent. This study leads to the conclusion that the ores have a more profound parentage linked to a broad system of thrust faults and folds, the mechanical origin of which is related to a southward trending (Sanpoil) syncline connecting with the Lewis and Clark zone of shift described by Billingsley and Locke3 in 1939. The Republic anticliue and a cross anticline recumbent against Cretaceous granodiorite. and involving some 4000 ft of Eocene andesite flows and early Miocene lake beds, localize the ores, mainly along the east flank, in a series of openings simulating drag folds and steeper than the folded flows. These broad structural features no doubt reach deeply into the basement rocks, where at appropriate crossings and junctions it is suggested that heat effects gave rise to ore-making materials, including, in this instance, intrusive breccias that later were mineralized, and comprising the broader bodies of new ores. The breccia ore is seen crosscutting the earlier narrow quartz veins with a welding of the two at junction areas by a second surge of ore minerals. The ore mined and developed since 1937 equals district production from 1896 to 1937 The ores are typified by cherty quartz, adularia and some barite, with fine pyrite and marcasite, polybasite, pyrargyrite, tetrahedrite and gold. Selenium is present, possibly with gold, as a normal selenide. The disseminated ores, as well as the vein and breccia ores, are localized principally in one 500-ft flow (Knob Hill andesite), which has been traced around the crest of the low northward-plunging Republic anticline. The gold-silver ratio in the earlier narrow veins is about I to 4 and in the disseminated and breccia ores, I to 7. The latter higher silver ratio is deemed to reflect the character of the second surge of mineralization. Sills and dikes of the Columbia River (Miocene) basalt cut the folded structure and ore, thus placing the mineralization in the middle Miocene. Introduction The Republic district of north central Washington is of new interest because of the discovery, development and extraction of new gold-silver ore; also, because of a unique local structural pattern believed to be integral with the broader tectonic mechanism of the continental framework. This district had 40 years of modest rating following its discovery in 1896. Its narrow ore bodies, complex mineralogy. and early inadequate metallurgy, together with the apparent bottoming of ore near 1000 ft, limited production to 300,000 oz of gold and 1,000,000 oz silver between 1897 and 1914. The following description of the Alabama coal-,fields is taken (with slight omissions) from the report " On the Warrior CoalField, by Henry McCalley, A.M., C. and M. E., Assistant State Geologist:" The coal lands of Alabama are of the great coal basin of the Ohio, or of the great Appalachian coal-field, and are estimated at 8660 square miles. They formed one connected field prior to the great Appalachian revolution, when there was pushed up through them long, narrow, anticlinal ridges which have been denuded into the present well-known anticlinal valleys, and thus this great field has been divided up into three more or less distinct parts. These parts were named by Prof. Tuomey, in 1849, the Warrior, the Cahaba and the Coosa coal-fields, respectively, from the names of the rivers which drain them. They are of very unequal size, the Warrior, with an area of 7810 square miles, being nearly ten times as large as the other two combined, and about two-thirds as large as the coal-area of Great Britain. This Warrior field is the most northwestern of the three coal-fields of Alabama, and comprises all of the coal-measnres in Alabama, northwest of the Alabama Great Southern railroad, or all of those drained by the Warrior and Tennessee rivers. The greater part of this field, almost all of it away from the present railroad lines, has never received more than a surface-examination. Still, we have in the Warrior coal-field one of the richest coal-basins of this or any other country. As a whole, the Warrior coal-field is a broad, shallow, tray-shaped depression, sloping towards the southwest, and with its southwest end covered by a newer formation and its southeast side, especially, complicated by folds and fractures. As is the case with all of our Coal Measures. it is composed of a series of sandstones. conglomerates, shales, slates and coal-seams, with some little limestone at several horizontal positions, but contains no thick bed of this last rock like the Measures of Pennsylvania and other States. In India the production of mica, which in other countries is of very minor importance, is one of the staple, long established industries, and ranks high in the statistics of mineral products. Nearly two-thirds of the mica of commerce comes from India. The Indians have used mica for glazing and decorative purposes through many centuries. About 14,000 men are employed in and about the mines, and the indigenous and primitive mode of mining is still followed; but, by reason of the exhaustion of the surface supply hitherto won without intelligence or capital, it will not be many years before the present interesting and casual methods will be replaced by a less archaic and more profitable system. India on the whole has little mineral wealth, but the unique resources of its mica-fields, cheap labor, and favorable natural conditions render it unlikely that any other country can ever more than temporarily contest her leadership in the production of this one minor but essential mineral. Mica plays a small but indispensable rôle in a variety of fields of dissimilar application. Its use and value depend upon characteristics which different kinds of mica have in varying degrees, each kind being adapted to its own special purpose. Its well-known characteristics of transparency, flexibility, elasticity, toughness, high dialectric strength, perfect flatness, ease of splitting into thin films, ability to stand high heat and sudden changes in temperature, give it value in many industries. No other substance, natural or artificial, has the same combination of qualities. The oldest use of mica is in glazing. By reason of the improvements in annealing glass, this is not now of great importance, but mica is still employed for the covers of ikon images in Russian churches, the windows of anthracite stoves, compass

An equation has been derived for use in calculating the sandface pressure of flowing gas wells in which the variation of the compressibility factor of the gas with pressure is taken into consideration. This variation due to compressibility has been put into both graphical and tabular form. Comparison of calculated results with field measured results were made on 20 dry gas wells from a given field and 11 distillate wells from different fields. The agreement between calculated and observed results is good. In addition to their use in the calculation of sandface pressures of flowing wells, the factors can be used in the direct calculation of the static bottom hole pressure of gas wells, the capacity of gas transmission lines, and in the calculation of the theoretical isothermal horsepower necessary to compress a natural gas. Examples demonstrating the use of various equations are given. INTRODUCTION Many of the equations used to calculate the sandface pressures of flowing gas wells from well head data do not take into consideration rigorously the deviation of the natural gas from ideal gas behavior. For low pressure wells this error is not serious. For high pressure wells flowing at high rates this error call be serious. Sandface pressures are used to determine the producing capacity of gas wells as shown in the U. S. Bureau of Mines' Monograph 7.' An equation has been derived for use in calculating the sandface pressure of flowing gas wells in which the variation of compressibility of the gas with pressure is taken into consideration. This variation due to compressibility has been put into both graphical and tabular form. In addition to their use in the calculation of sandface pressures, these "factors" can also be used to give a direct solution in the calculation of the static bottom hole pressure of gas wells, the calculation of the capacity of gas transmission lines, and the calculation of the isothermal horsepower necessary to compress a gas.
