If it had not been for the persistent cold wind, the sun blazing out of a cloudless blue sky would have made it one of those warm, idyllic early spring days which attract the socalled "snowbirds" to Northern Mexico for a vacation at this time of year. At a drill site perched on top of a rather exposed mountain we were installing a number of borehole extensometers in diamond drill holes. A Threading Problem For the uninitiated in geotechnical instrumentation, a borehole extensometer is a series of anchors installed at various depths in a borehole, each anchor being independently connected by a tensioned wire to a measuring device set in the collar of the hole. Any movement of the rock at depth is detected by the anchors and transmitted by the wires to the measuring device. Flexible plastic tubing is used as a spacer between the anchors and the measuring wires are run up the inside of the tube. At this particular site we were installing an instrument string nearly 1000 ft in length. Threading wire only 0.041 in. in diam through 1000 ft of plastic pipe is almost as difficult as getting the proverbial camel through the eye of a needle.

INTRODUCTION Spoil pile slope failures can have costly consequences. In- stability in the form of a single major event or as a recurring problem can 'mean lost production, lost resources and damaged mining equipment. In extreme but not uncomnon cases, a major spoils slide can force the closure and abandonment of a pit. Slope stability is affected by mine operating practices as we1 l as geologic conditions and material parameters. Mine operators can enhance spoil pile stability through constructive changes in their operations. Attention to the causes of in- stability can lead to development of operating practices tailored to site specific problems. Action aimed at limiting future instability is frequently more cost effective than continually "coping" with unstable spoils. The effect of mine operations on material properties is often overlooked because the "data" are not easily quantified nor input directly into stability analysis equations. We have found, however, that miners' experience with their own operation, as well as data pooled from similar operations, yields relation- ships which can be utilized to solve stability problems. The repetitive nature of area type surface coal mines with successive spoil pile rows further enables the development of useful site specific relationships. Stability problems can be mitigated by applying these relationships.

The fall of rock from strip coal mine highwalls continues to be the largest single source of fatal accidents, so methods to improve highwall stability through improved blasting practices were investigated in the field. This paper covers the results of a project to improve, using existing and proven technology, unstable highwall conditions through better blasting practices in Appalachian strip coal mines. Better borehole blasting agent distribution and optimization of burden, spacing, and delay periods allowing satisfactory breakage with minimal backbreak were the objectives. At a selected field site, geologic conditions were closely examined with regard to joint orientation and spacing, and resulting slope stability considerations. Utilizing surface blasting concepts of trying to achieve flexural failure of the rock mass both horizontally and longitudinally by appropriate relationships between burden, spacing, and hole length, as well as delay time sequence to achieve optimal confinement and breakage, successful results were achieved. A test series of eight blasts was completed and the resultant highwall monitored by repetitive photography. Actual blockfalls could be measured and the stability for each blast design thus quantified. The study of drilling and blasting economics along with equipment performance led to an economic model of blast parameters and the identification of blast design cost benefits. The work demonstrated that small strip mining companies are able to achieve a more stable highwall excavation utilizing presently available technology, equipment, and explosive products at improved operational cost and safety.

W. L. SaundeRs, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—Notwithstanding the sweeping statements made by Mr. Clarke in this paper, the friends of compressed air are not dismayed. There is no war between electricity and compressed air. Each one has its field of usefulness, and in that field each is supreme. In spite of commercial interests, in spite of prejudices and the enthusiasm of the inventor, the thing that is best will survive and flourish. At least ten years ago, our engineering papers contained large advertisements and pages of reading-matter about the application of electricity to mines, recording the introduction of numerous rock-drilling plants, and claiming that the problem had been solved, greatly to the advantage of the miner and with promise of large profits to the manufacturers of electrical apparatus. Edison and Thomson labored to apply electricity to mines, and each believed that the probabilities of success were great. This was the period of the solelloid rock-drill, which mas admirably suited, theoretically, to the percussive principle and in the development of which hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent without satisfactory result. I have searched in vain for a standard mining equipment where electric rock-drills are in constant, commercial operation. During a recent trip made from New York to California, I visited most of the important mines of the West and failed to discover a single electric equipment, so far as this class of mining-work is concerned. If any one will inform me where there exists today an electric-drilling equipment in constant service in mines in the United States, I shall be glad to receive the information. Fox several years the Fansteel Products Co. has been engaged in the production and development of various of the rarer metals. It is at present engaged in the commercial production of tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum in a very high state of purity. The information contained in this paper is partly a general compilation from various sources and partly information obtained as a result of recent years of work in the laboratory of this company. Tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum form a group peculiar to themselves among the commercially available metals. Their very high melting points (tantalum 2770° C., tungsten 3350° C., and molybdenum 2550° C.) set them apart so far as the metallurgical processes for their production are concerned. Further, when properly prepared and treated they will stand a somewhat unusual degree of cold work, that is work below the temperature at which marked crystal growth takes place. Such cold-worked metal may show a high tensile strength; tantalum to 130,000 lb. per sq. in., tungsten to 490,000 lb., and molybdenum to 260,000 lb., in the form of fine wire. In physical appearance, these metals are not unlike some steels; they may be better described by saying that polished tantalum some¬what resembles lead; polished tungsten, iron; and polished molybdenum, nickel. The polished surfaces of all three remain untarnished in ordinary air. Air containing corrosion-producing impurities will, in general, show molybdenum the least resistant to corrosion and tantalum the most resistant. Molybdenum has, however, a high degree of resistance to corrosion by hydrochloric acid, a property that should render it of commercial interest. On the other hand, it is markedly attacked by some of the weaker organic acids.

(communication to the Secretary *):—At the meetings of English technical societies it not infrequently happens that, during the discussion of a paper, someone will arise to say that although he highly appreciated the material presented, nevertheless he believed it would have been better if some other phase of the question had been more highly emphasized. Assuming that this form of discussion is permissible in the Institute, I should like to reiterate the point made by Prof. A. J. Moses that conclusive proof of the identity of the minerals in question is an essential feature of the study of ores in this way. This is also expressed by Paul Krusch in his recent valuable paper on the sulphide ores (in which he arrives at conclusions diametrically opposed to those of Mr. Graton), as follows: "The diagnostic properties of the various ore minerals are known to but a limited circle of investigators." Many earlier investigators began the study of ores beneath the microscope by reflected light, but discontinued their work, in most cases, because they were unwilling to undertake the great amount of preliminary work necessary to securely establish a basis for their inferences. It is evident that Messrs. Graton and Murdoch realize that the promised later paper on diagnostic characters will be the more important of the two, but the point should be emphasized to forestall a flood of literature from other investigators who may gain the impression that the brief survey of polished specimens is a vade mecum to incontrovertible conclusions as to any given ore deposit.

Through close cooperation with geophysical and geological test work by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in Beaufort County, the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory assisted in the evaluation of North Carolina's most valuable mineral resource, the Pungo River phosphate deposit. After a core evaluation study, the flotation process for the concentration of North Carolina phosphate was demonstrated in a 500-lb per hr pilot plant in Asheville. Tonnage samples of phosphate concentrate were produced for customer evaluation in the United States, Europe, and the Far East. Plans for a larger pilot plant to be erected at the plant site at Lee Creek were prepared for TGS. The larger pilot plant was operated by TGS in conjunction with a test dredging operation which led to the adoption of a dragline dry mining method to move 90,000 tpd of material for the production of 10,000 tpd of phosphate concentrate in the all-flotation phosphate concentrator. Calcining, dry grinding, and byproduct studies complimented the construction of one of the world's largest and most modern fertilizer raw-feed complexes on the eastern North Carolina seaboard.

A two year study was made of the waste disposal of the pebble rock phosphate industry. Solid slimes are impounded in large settling areas and the process water is re-used. Clear effluent was not found to be toxic to fish, or animal life in field tests or in controlled experiments.

Since 1909, when an agreement between Minnesota's Tax Commission and the University of Minnesota's School of Mines was worked out, it has been the annual responsibility of the School to evaluate and classify the iron ore deposits within the State. These unique duties of an academic institution have provided School officials with an excellent view of the past, present and probable future of the mining industry in Minnesota as the average grade of iron ore (excluding taconite) * diminishes while at the same time it competes with beneficiated taconites and foreign high-grade ores for use in America's eastern blast furnaces. SYSTEM OF EVALUATION In the latter part of November of each year, the Mining Division of the Department of Taxation makes a preliminary study of the active mines which the Department wants the School of Mines to review. These are discussed with the engineers of the Ore Estimate Division of the School of Mines and with the mining companies. After these discussions, a list of the mines of each of the major operating companies is submitted to the Ore Estimate Division of the School of Mines with the request that these properties be reviewed by them as of the next assessment date (May 1st). At the same time, a letter is sent to the mining companies requesting that they submit to the Division their own estimates on the selected mines operated by them, together with all computations, drill records, maps and cross-sections. The mining companies are re- quested to send in this information during the first half of the year, and, as far as is possible, they have always complied with this request promptly. Much of this information received by the School of Mines is of a confidential nature and is treated as such.

Results are presented of a detailed study on the combined influences of ingot dendrite am spacing and thermomechanical treatments on the structure and solution kinetics of high --purity cast and worked 7075 alloy. Solution kinetics were found to depend sensitively on ingot dendrite am spacing and on details of therrnomechanical processing, including amount of reduction and extent of&apos; solution treatment before reduction. An approximate analysis is given for rate of solution of nonequilibrium second phase in the cast and worked structres; results of the analysis are compared with experiment. MICROSEGREGATION in high strength aluminum alloys manifests itself as "coring" (composition differences within the primary aluminum-rich phase), and as interdendritic second phase. The mechanism of formation of the microsegregation is understood, and approximate prediction of the amount of second phase is possible for simple binary systems.1,2 When alloy elements or impurities are present in amounts less than their solid solubility at solution temperature, any phases forming from these elements are termed "nonequilibrium" and can be dissolved by appropriate solution treatment. The rate at which the nonequilibrium phases are removed depends sensitively on their spacing (dendrite arm spacing in the cast material, or band spacing in wrought material). When alloy elements or impurities are present in amounts in excess of their solubility at the solution temperature, second phase particles form an "equilibrium" second phase that does not dissolve in heat treatment and may, in fact, coarsen in such treatment. Usual commercial, high strength, wrought aluminum alloys contain nonequilibrium second phases that were not fully dissolved during ingot processing. They also contain equilibrium second phases resulting from impurities present in amounts greater than their solubility. As has been shown by Antes, Lipson, and Rosenthal,3 and will be demonstrated further in a subsequent paper by the authors,4 significant improvements in mechanical properties of high strength alloys can be achieved by reduction or elimination of these second phases. Methods of elimination are 1) to employ high purity materials to minimize amounts of equilibrium second phase, and 2) to employ suitable thermomechanical processing techniques to fully eliminate nonequilibrium second phases. Work reported herein comprises a study of selected thermomechani- cal processing treatments, and of their influence on solution kinetics of wrought high purity 7075 alloy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Melting and Casting. The bulk of the work reported was performed on a single ingot of high purity 7075 alloy. The ingot was 4 in. by 4 in. by 8 in. high, uni-directionally solidified following a procedure previously described.5 The mold was heated to 1350°F before pouring the melt. The bottom chill was carbon coated stainless steel. Water was circulated through the chill after the melt was poured. The 7075 alloy was prepared from high purity virgin material (aluminum, zinc, magnesium) and from master alloys (Al-50 pct Cu, A1-15 pct Cr, A1-5 pct Ti). Final measured melt composition (wt pct) was: Zn Mg Cu Cr Ti Fe Si Al 5.70 2.28 1.35 0.18 0.15 <0.002 <0.012 bal Melting was done in a silicon carbide crucible; all tools were coated with zircon wash to minimize iron contamination; degassing was by bubbling chlorine through the melt. che-rmomechanical Treatments. Detailed studies were made on material taken from a location approximately 13 in. from the chill and 51/2 in. from the chill (i.e., from 1 in. thick slices taken between 1 and 2 in. from the chill and between 5 and 6 in. from the chill). Solution treatment was done at 860°F in an air-circulating furnace with a "bottom drop" arrangement to achieve minimum delay time between solution treatment and quench. Samples solution treated in this way were 2 in. by 2 in. by 1 in. Temperature of the quench water was approximately 10°C. Mechanical reduction was by cold rolling. Samples 11/2 and 51/2 in. from the chill were treated for 12 and 24 hr, respectively, before cold rolling. Reduction by cold rolling was then 4/1, 16/1, and 35/1. In each case, several intermediate anneals (1/2 hr at 860°F) were used to permit reaching the final thickness without cracking; two such anneals were used for the 4/1 reduction, five for 16/1, and six for 35/1. After working, materials were again solution treated for various lengths of time from 0 to 48 hr and quenched in water. Structural Measurements. Secondary dendrite arm spacings were measured using procedures previously described.&apos; For each measurement reported, five photomicrographs were first made at X75. Measurements were made of dendrite arm spacings in at least 20 different grains (grain structure was equiaxed). Grain size measurements were made by running a number of random traverses across photomicrographs of the samples and obtaining the mean lineal intercept. THE 1941 fall meeting of the Iron and Steel and the Institute- of Metal, Division held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Philadelphia, during the first three days (Oct. 20-22) of the National Metal Congress was well attended as usual, and the seven technical sessions and the joint round table on order-disorder transformations were this year of considerably more than routine interest. Despite unseasonably warm weather, a scarcity of hotels (there were rumors, apparently well-founded, that , some of the metal man attending the Congress had to stay in tourist camp), and a multiplicity of technical and other ions of the co-operating societies that gave the Congress this year the general air of a three-ring circus the A.I.M.E. sessions attracted audiences that ragged from seventy or eighty up to 350

The Ozark Lead Company operating facilities are located in Reynolds County at the south end of the "New Lead Belt" of southeast Missouri. Development of this wholly owned subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation started in May 1964, with a six foot diameter by 1250 foot deep steel lined shaft. A 20-foot diameter, 1480 foot deep, concrete lined production shaft was collared in March 1968. Production from the facilities began that month and has reached a present average of approximately 6000 tons per day. This paper describes the fully automatic system used to hoist the lead-zinc ore from a depth of 1420 feet to the surface crushing and concentrating facilities, as well as the man and materials hoisting system which allows the lowering of large equipment into the mine. MINING Galena, sphalerite and some copper minerals are found in several mineralized zones of the relatively flat lying dolomite of the "Bonneterre formation". The mineable ore zones vary from 10 feet to 110 feet thick, from 200 feet to 1200 feet wide, and several thousands of feet on strike. Two-boom diesel-hydraulic jumbos equipped with rotary percussion drills are used for both development and production. The jumbos are used principally to open the room and pillar stopes, and a track mounted down hole drill is used to bench in areas where the ore thickness warrants. Explosives used are ANFO, dynamite, and water-jell which are detonated by electric blasting caps. Broken ore (and waste) is hauled by rubber tired transports to chuted transfer raises. Approximately every 500 feet, these raises connect the orebody to the 15 foot by 28 foot train haulage level below. Two twenty ton diesel-hydraulic locomotives haul 160 tons per trip to storage pockets which have a total storage of 1500 tons of material. From these pockets the material is fed over a 6 foot by 20 foot mechanical vibrating feeder which includes one 4 foot by 6 foot grizzly section to a 48 inch by 60 inch jaw crusher. The grizzly and crusher products are transferred horizontally 45 feet on a 48 inch conveyor belt, to one of two 750 ton storage pockets. The material can flow unimpeded into one pocket or be deflected into the second pocket by a movable rock filled hopper. LOADING POCKET The material in each storage pocket is controlled by six lengths of ship anchor chain. The upper end of the 20 foot chain is anchored behind a brow in the pocket, while the lower ends are joined by a header. The lower ends of the chains are raised by two electric powered marine barge winches using 3/4 inch cables. The crusher operator controls the raising and lowering of these chains from a console in the crusher station. The upper and lower travel of the chains is controlled by cams and limit switches on the winch drive. The winches are located within 5 feet of the shaft, and shaft water continually causes problems with the electric components. A malfunction in the upper travel switch will cause the winch to pull the chains into the cable sheave (breaking the cable or sheave), while the lower switch causes the winch to unwind too much rope. Serious consideration is being given to changing the electric motors to pneumatic, since pneumatic motors will eliminate the need of any electrics at the winches. The winches can be "bottomed out" against the sheave without damage to the cable or sheave when raising the chains, and can be allowed to "free wheel" to lower the chains. Coal is defined as a combustible rock that originated in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man&apos;s earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks returned to earth continue to provide some answers to questions concerning the earth&apos;s origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust and upper mantle of the earth are made up of several large plates along which differential movement (primarily horizontal) takes place. Such movements, although small, are occurring today. These horizontal movements are accompanied by vertical movements causing important changes in the relative position of the continents and oceans. STRUCTURAL imperfections in crystals, in recent years, have received the attention of metallurgists concerned with single-crystal properties. Certain etching solutions cause local variations in the rate of etching at dislocations.&apos; Dislocations are expected to be preferred segregation sites for impurities&apos; and Dash" has shown that precipitation of copper occurs preferentially at edge-type dislocations in silicon. Diffusion rates along dislocations are probably higher than rates through more perfect crystalline regions.&apos; These and other phenomena which may be influenced by dislocations may be studied by revealing dislocations as etch pits. This study was undertaken to develop an etch solution for silicon crystals to reveal low-angle grain boundaries associated with dislocation arrays and also etch pits with good contour definition. Additional etches have been reported by Dash," Vogel and Lovell.T rystals were sectioned on crystal lographic planes at various angles from the growth direction for microscopic examination of the etch pits. Experimental Crystals of 75-100 g mass and 3 cm diam were oriented and cut on crystallographic planes. Crystals were grown by Czochralski technique from a quartz crucible. Lapped wafers were chemically polished in a modified CP-4 etch for 1 min (bromine was deleted from the etch solution). The polished wafer was then etched* at room temperature for 5 min. The use of larger amounts of H2O and/or CH2COOH slows the reaction. The Cu(NO3),.3H2O was added to increase the reaction rate and give more definition to the etch pits developed. Previous study of simple impact systems indicated that energy required for fracture and size reduction of brittle materials is greatly dependent on the type of loading that is employed. In this regard it was postulated that fracture and size reduction of a brittle specimen might be accomplished by a high velocity impact at an energy level at which a low velocity impact would leave the specimen relatively undamaged. The finite time required to propagate energy away from the point of loading of an impacted object to other parts of the object and to its supports may permit a concentration of energy at the point of impact if the rate of loading is high. Localizing of energy at the point of impact could quickly initiate fractures that would propagate through the impacted material along with the traveling stress waves. As the cracks form, the initially absorbed strain energy would be released and portions of it travel ahead of the crack tips as stress waves. These secondary stress waves, combined with the initial stress waves derived from the impact, would produce high localized strain conditions in front of the fracture zone. The fracture zone would propagate and the specimen shatter. High rates of loading are brought about by short impact times, in turn obtained by employing high velocity projectiles that are of small mass compared to the impacted object.

NEARLY one hundred members of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and friends of Professor Peele met at dinner at the Aldine Club, New York, on the evening of April 26, to take part in the ceremonies attending the presentation of the Society&apos;s annual gold medal. This had been awarded to Professor Peele by the Society in recognition of his laborious and painstaking work as Editor-in-chief of the monu-mental "Mining Engi-neers&apos; Handbook. Carl A. Meissner acted as toastmaster. W. Y. Westervelt, a student and lifelong asso-ciate of Professor Peele, then recounted some of his friend&apos;s early exploits, be-ginning with his mining adventures in the paternal cellar, whereby the neces-sity for adequate ventilation was indelibly impressed on his mind. Graduating from the Columbia School of Mines in 1883, Robert Peele for several years followed the typical mining career, as assayer and superinten-dentatan outlying Colorado mine; mill foreman and assistant superintendent of the Silver King, in Ari-zona; in charge of a mine at Fairplay, Colo.; and superintendent for the Ore-gon Gold Mines Co., at Cornucopia. At intervals during this experience, he spent parts of four years on two mineral investigations m in Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and Dutch Guiana. He i was called to Columbia as Adjunct Professor of Mining in 1892, and became Professor in 1904. During his sabattical leave in 1903 he travelled around the world, r stopping at some of the most important mining cen-ters, and in 1910 he renewed his acquaintance with South Africa and South America.
