Ceremonies for the induction of five mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be on Sept. 12, 2009 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The five inductees are: Paul A. Bailey, 82, Richard T. Moolick, 89, William Braden and Alonzo Pawling and Henry Harnischfeger. Paul A. Bailly was president of Bear Creek Mining Co., the U.S. exploration subsidiary of Kennecott Copper, from 1961 to 1967. In 1968, he joined Occidental Petroleum Corp. and was tasked with creating the company?s international mining division, Oxymin, which he led as president through 1983. During his distinguished career, Bailly participated in numerous significant mineral discoveries, developed a new exploration philosophy and made important additions to the mineral exploration literature. William Braden was the first to recognize the immense potential of the El Teniente orebody in Chile. He founded Braden Copper Co. and developed the El Teniente Mine which now, 100 years later, remains the world?s largest underground copper mine. Braden?s endeavor survives to-day as the El Teniente division of the Chilean state copper company, CODELCO. T. (Dick) Moolick established a lasting legacy in the mining industry, first during a 35 year career with Phelps Dodge Corp. and then as the driving force in establishing the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville. The Hall of Fame and Museum ? a monument to the memory of the men and women who pioneered the discovery and development of the United States? natural resources ? has become one of the fi nest museums in the western United States.

From 1990 to 1996, 16 states reported 92 injuries from falls of roof, rib or face in the more than 90 underground stone mines in the United States (Fig.1). Missouri, Pennsylvania and Kentucky accounted for 48% of the total number of injuries (Fig. 2). Of this total, 11 miners were killed. Of the 11 fatalities, 10, or 91%, were associated with unrecognized loose or failed rock within the roof beam. Additionally, unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in a majority of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground US stone mines from1990 to 1996. This number is not large in magnitude. But a workforce of fewer than 2,000 miners makes for a high fatal-accident rate. The severity of the typical fall-of-ground injury is, in general, very high. About three-fifths of all roof, face and rib fall injuries were designated by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as some kind of lost time accident. MSHA assigns each accident a severity value from one to six. A one represents a fatality, a two, a permanent disability and three, a lost time accident (Fig. 3).

In Germany the extraction of lithium and its salts has been handled mainly by units of the two major concerns - Metallgesellschaft A, G. and Deutsche Gold und Silber Scheide Anstalt, both with headquarters in Frankfurt. Zinnwaldite, which belongs to the mica group, is the major source of the lithium-containing raw material in Germany. Lepidolite and amblygonite also are used when available, but they are imported, as there are no major deposits of these two minerals in Germany.

The individual or company director who ignores his or her obligations under the Resource Management Act 1991 and under the proposed hazardous substances legislation, ignores them at their peril. Two recent cases in Canada and the United Kingdom concerning environmental offences under similar legislation illustrate the risks well.

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context in which they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage such as nuclear power generation where international cooperationis eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit its mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions. In pursuance of the investigation into the influence of various elements on the properties of lead during the past year, the effect of several elements on the creep rate of commercially pure lead has been investigated; a standard initial stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. having been adopted for comparison purposes. Other work which has been carried out indicates that the relative results of creep tests may be altered by varying the applied stress, but this aspect of the problem will need to await further investigations for itscomplete elucidation. The results obtained with dilute tellurium alloys are considered sufficiently interesting, and in some respects are so extraordinary, as to warrant publicatiorr at this stage.n must be realised however that, since the results obtained appear to be at variance with those said to have been obtained in practice and those previously published, the present investigation can only be considered as a contribution to our knowledge of the general problem.Consequently it is not considered advisable or necessary to offer detailed explanation of the results given. In fact, some features of the tests about to be described will need further investigation before an adequate explanation is possible.

Despite the wide use of micropiles for rehabilitating and retrofitting existing structures, little is known regarding the load-transfer distribution of grouted micropiles in various soil deposits. The rehabilitation of a concrete-frame warehouse in Portland, Oregon, required provisions for the seismic restraint of a new shear wall; the installation of two micropiles was specified to meet project requirements. The micropiles were uncased, 19-m (63-ft) long, 200-mm (8-in) nominal diameter, and reinforced full-length with a 64-mm (No. 20) diameter hardened steel threadbar. Due to space limitations, a sacrificial, instrumented micropile was installed near the two production piles to verify design assumptions. This paper describes the geologic setting of the project within the unsaturated Missoula Flood deposits, instrumentation, load-displacement behavior, load transfer, and Beta-coefficients for the sacrificial micropile.

End-of-life Electronic and Electrical Equipment, o_cially called WEEE, is unjustly regarded as mainly a waste management problem. What is structurally overlooked is the enormous resource impact of these devices. EEE rep- resents a tremendous metal resource, which should be uti- lized through e_ective recycling, which has a much lower environmental footprint than primary production. The actual amount of end-of-life EEE recycled today is embar- rassingly low since insu_cient EEE is collected and part of the collected EEE is exported to developing countries, where it is largely not entering o_cial recycling systems. To achieve a global recycling society issues like technol- ogy, economics, life cycle structure, stakeholder aware- ness and legislation have to be addressed in a global, co-operative manner so that sustainable closed product cycles can be obtained. Requirements for a "global re- cycling society" are de_ned to address today's reality of global ows of used consumer products, taking into ac- count the likely needs of the future.

Formation of gold-bearing veins in Otago Schist was intimately linked to the structural evolution of the schist belt. The currently-exploited Macraes gold deposit formed in a regional scale shear zone during latemetamorphic uplift of the schist belt. Further exploration for this type of deposit will be facilitated by an increased understanding of the late-metamorphic structural evolution of the schist belt. To this end, a three-dimensional cross section through the Otago Schist has been drawn using structural data gathered at outcrops in a 20 - 40 km wide transect across central Otago. This is the first continuous detailed structural section to be drawn through the belt. The section spans an area from Textural Zone 1 metagreywacke of the Torlesse terrane in the northeast through TZ 4 schist in the central region and across the Caples-Torlesse boundary to Textural Zone 3 schist of the Caples terrane in the southwest. Two different late-metamorphic structural generations are identified in this section: the long-recognised Manorburn Generation, and a new æPoolburn GenerationÆ. The location of the Caples-Torlesse boundary has been refined on this transect by field mapping combined with whole rock geochemistry.

The depletion of iron ore deposits at the face of the mine site dictates the necessity for the exploitation of formerly less attractive orebodies to meet the demand of the modern world. These orebodies will typically be found close to or even beneath the water table where an increasing clay and moisture content will result. Problematic iron ores, colloquially termed as ‘wet and sticky’ material (WSM), can have a significant impact in the material handling stream due to the expensive downtime of processing equipment, which is attributed to the inter-particle and boundary cohesion and adhesion forces of the bulk material.In order to gain a better understanding of the causes of poor handleability, experimental test methods to determine wall adhesion, and inter-particle adhesion within bulk materials were developed. Based on the combination of wall adhesion and inter-particle adhesion measurements, with traditional methods of assessing bulk material handleability, a new method to assess the potential of bulk materials to cause handling problems is proposed. This method reduces the multitude of factors leading to problematic behaviour to a handleability index (HI) [0,1], which is easily assessed and understood. The method is suitable for adhesive materials and applicable for a wide range of material flow, from gravity reclaim stockpiles to transfer chutes and carry back on conveyor belts.Additionally, this research presents an assessment of the HI derived by experimental testing of three iron ore samples. A clear understanding of the problematic behaviour of the iron ore samples is achieved with the use of dust extinction moisture (DEM) tests, which indicates the regions where problematic behaviour may be experienced on-site.CITATION:Carr, M, Plinke, J, Williams, K, Roberts, A and Chen, W, 2017. The desire for dry passageways promotes the NATM as it provides a final support system most suitable for the installation of a waterproofing membrane. Waterproofing during construction is a cost effective way to enhance safety and function as well as increasing the life of an underground structure. The NATM approach utilizes the surrounding mass as an integral element of the "ringlike" support system. At the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Lehigh Tunnel No. 2 various rock classifications were determined to require support measures ranging from 2 to 12 inches of shotcrete along with spiling, wire mesh, deformed bar, lattice girders and rock bolts as needed. Field instrumentation and monitoring programmes are a key factor for the success of the NATM. When the support "shell" stabilizes smoothing shotcrete, waterproofing and a final liner can be placed.

To cater for the future introduction of 12 car trains, London Blackfriars railway station is being extended from the north end to span across the River Thames. Following the demolition of existing buildings, a number of challenges had to be overcome including working adjacent to a live railway line, above live London Underground tracks and working in small restricted spaces. Trains entering and exiting two lines of track at the bridge's north end of track meant that access was difficult due to the location and proximity to existing infrastructure. The site was very much constrained and congested and there were also a series of works in place to maintain passenger flows so as not to inconvenience the travelling public. The site had been developed many times in the past resulting in a number of obstructions that would require removal during the piling work including old brickwork, reinforced concrete, redundant railway sleepers and track and existing concrete and timber piles. A number of solutions had to be devised to overcome these obstructions. Piling works were undertaken during the day and at night to meet programme.

Discussion of the paper of Mr. Granger, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 25, January, 1909, pp. 1 to 37. LEWIS M. HAUPT, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the 'Secretary*) :-This subject is of great interest to me, and I am noting progress and conditions as a test of my own judgment in advocating what I believed to be the nearer, cheaper and better route at Nicaraugua. I have as yet learned nothing to change my views, or modify the convictions which led me to retire from the Commission; but that is not the issue to-day. Our government is committed to the Panama route, and is bound to " make good." There are many points presented by Mr. Granger which seem to me worthy of very serious consideration. But when all is said there remains the risk of seismic convulsions, to which either form of canal is subject; and I fail to see that the risk would be reduced by making the cut deeper, with greater surcharge of lateral pressure upon the side walls. A severe earthquake in the rainy season would doubtless close either type of canal. One of the arguments in favor of the Panama route most insisted on, was that Nature had provided good natural harbors at its termini. Recalling this, it has interested me to note that the cost of creating the necessary harbors is estimated at $27,000,000. Mr. Granger refers to this, and quotes the Board's report to the effect that, on the Atlantic side, it will require 5 miles of jetties to " make an excellent harbor out of a wretched one." The vulnerable part of Mr. Granger's paper seems to me to lie in the admission that the plant required is still in the embryonic stage, and that at least one machine should be built and tested " to demonstrate that the theoretical strains and forces work out in practice exactly as expected." Bateman Minerals & Metals supplies the APIC Technologies which include the under-bed air-pulsed APIC jig and related technologies such as the JigScan controller and advanced mathematical models of the jig process. Bateman have developed a methodology for predicting process performance for jigs from simplified testing and modelling, based on batch equipment matched to industrial designs. Batch tests conducted on laboratory scale air-pulsed jigs can process small batches of material, such as those obtained from drill core samples. The novelty comes from using an advanced jig process model, ASTRAD, to link the results of batch and continuous jigs. The batch jig presented as a novelty in this paper has been designed to be hydraulically equivalent to the full-scale APIC Jig, allowing the generation of equivalent pulse shapes and using JigScan controller. Lump and fine ferrous ore material have been separated in this unit and any feed >1mm can be tested and extracted. The global test procedure and further modelling focus on the stratification of material, with emphasis on key aspects such as pulse shape, feed characteristics and residence time. The splitting of rejects from concentrates is itself more difficult to reproduce in batch jigging, however the ASTRAD model includes a separation imperfection module, and the APIC Technologies have extraction systems adapted to each type of material. Air pulsed batch jigs are available in several locations and are relocatable. They have been used to treat samples from Australia, South Africa and India as part of studies into ore processing using jigs. Each test layer is available for various physical testing procedures (density and chemical analyses). Test-work is performed on a case by case basis, and analysed using an advanced model ?now available over the internet. Some fundamentals of air-pulsed jigging are recapped along with some of the features of APIC jigs. The process of designing a ?hydraulically equivalent? batch jig test is then described. Some results from jigging tests are presented plus the results of the ASTRAD advanced jig model, which was first developed at the JKMRC with ferrous ores and coal and is now being supported and further developed and utilised by Bateman.

The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engines in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. This bibliography, therefore, is a compilation of references from interdisciplinary sources pertaining to diesels and related areas. Related areas are defined as those concerned with: (i) mine ventilation system design and operation; (ii) description, measurement, modeling and monitoring of mine atmosphere contaminants, and (iii) tests, standards, selection procedures, and operational practices for internal combustion engines in underground mines. This paper addresses the experience designing and installing bored piles for the King’s Cross area. This includes continuous flight auger and rotary bored piles, with a range of diameters between 600 mm and 1200 mm, reaching a maximum depth of 56 m below ground level. Existing Network Rail Thameslink twin bored running tunnels are located directly beneath the subject plots. These tunnels have an external diameter of 6.6 m and the crowns of the tunnels are very shallow, in some cases just 10 m below the existing ground level. Some plots needed piles to be installed in close proximity to the tunnels, which required additional control measures and contingency plans. Pile verticality was monitored as the tip of each pile advanced and in-tunnel monitoring readings were verified and are presented. Lessons learned from designing, installing and testing the piles and monitoring the tunnels are addressed in this paper.

Frequently materials handling operations are compromised by transfer chute problems ranging from high wear rates, blockages and ineffective loading of the downstream conveyor. This paper will present the design flow implemented to overcome problems in two case studies utilising discrete element modelling incorporating material characterisation.Material testing is relevant in achieving a valid discrete element method (DEM) simulation model and subsequently a valuable design tool for transfer chute assessment and design. It is well recognised that in the current growth and demand for mineral resources, leading to ever increasing conveyor capacities associated with export terminals and mineral processing facilities that transfer chutes are a key focus point. The successful performance of the transfer chute is also dependent on operating with a ærobust rangeÆ of material flowability and handling characteristics. This requirement is crucial in accommodating mineral ores from developing resources, which are often more friable and stickier than in past decades.This paper will include details of chute installations associated with iron ore and coking coal, from the DEM simulations through to the performance of the installed and commissioned plant.CITATION:Moore, B A, van der Merwe, S and van Aarde, N, 2013. The Chinese coal industry is the largest coal producer in the world. The total production in I995 was 1.28 bnt. On the way towards introducing a market economic system, this mature industry is facing major challenges. The main problems are a large surplus of manpower, shortage of current assets and capital, low productivity, high casualties and a huge deficit. This paper discusses the present situation and the future developments in the Chinese coal industry. The current policy can be stated as ‘rapidly developing the state collieries and improving the village and private mines; integrated development to achieve an economic operating scale and encouraging a diversified economy; rapidly exploiting and developing in the North west and South west; promoting productivity and efficiency; welcoming multi-sources and types of investment; setting up coal exchange markets; and the careful control of resources and the environment'.

As time is costly, engineering companies have developed methods, procedures and mechanical equipment to tunnel faster. But the best excavation method will not be able to cope with the time pressure if there is not a reliable backup system. Therefore, the application of belt conveyors for tunnel boring machine (TBM) drives as well as for drill-and-blast driven tunnels assure a quick and smooth removal of excavated soil in order to enhance the efficiency of the tunneling equipment. During the last 10 years, belt conveyor systems have achieved ?state-of-the-art? levels and have become the first choice for muck removal systems in both TBM and drill-and-blast driven tunnels. Because time has become such a key criterion in tunneling projects, it is essential that all equipment is operated so as to derive optimum efficiency and minimize costs. Efficiency also means to think about new tasks for existing technologies.

A three?stages countercurrent fluidized bed prototipe reactor to neutralize the SO2from smelter gases has been developed. For gases with 8 vol-%SO2, at 800°C and for 4 h mean reaction time of the limestone, the capture of SO2 is 99%, with off gases with 0.07 vol-%. For 2 vol-%SO2, the total capture of SO2 can be obtained at 750°C and 4 h reaction time. The calcine obtained contain a blend of unreacted limestone and calcium sulphatewith minor amounts of residual lime.
