Amsterdam City Council is building a new metro line, the North–South Line. The line passes under Amsterdam Central Station (a listed building) about 18m below street level. The retaining wall that has to be built underneath the existing building is an innovative construction consisting of two rows of steel piles interspersed with a solid mass of overlapping jet grout columns: a composite ‘sandwich’ wall. This paper gives an overview of the approach taken to designing (computational models) and building the retaining wall. Special attention is paid to the observational method used for the construction of the jet grout columns.

Vertical flow is an important mechanism in many petroleum reservoirs. Yet no adequate method has heretofore been proposed for determining the in-situ vertical permeability in a reasonable length of time. Core measurements of vertical permeability do not necessarily represent effective in-situ values. Cores may be representative of only localized pockets of high or low permeability, and total reliance on cores might cause one to overlook the presence of vertical fractures altogether. Conventional single-well tests, interference tests, and pulse tests commonly are used to determine horizontal transmissibility, khh/u, but generally are not designed to measure vertical trans-missibility or other groups containing vertical permeability, ku. A new well test described here provides a measure of in-situ vertical permeability as well as the previously measurable horizontal permeability. This "vertical test" determines the vertical diffusivity, kv/gcu, and horizontal transmissibility, khd1/u (where dl is the length of injection or production perforations). The test is basically a short-term interference or pulse test normally lasting less than a day. Conventional down-hole equipment is used between two isolated sets of perforations in the same well, as shown in Fig. 1. A "layer-cake" description of a reservoir can be obtained by running two or more vertical tests in the same well, each over different vertical intervals. Each test can be analyzed for the effective vertical and horizontal properties of the interval tested. In addition, a vertical well test can determine the effective- ness of a shale barrier or tight zone by testing across it. Field use to date of vertical testing has confirmed its utility in reservoir description. Mathematical Basis Interpretation of vertical tests for ku and kh is based on comparison of measured pressure response with computer-generated response. Pressure behavior during a vertical test in a homogeneous, anisotropic, infinite-acting reservoir (infinite in radial extent and bounded in both directions vertically) is given by the diffusion equation for slightly compressible fluids with negligible gravity effects.l A schematic diagram of the problem is presented in Fig. 2, and an analytic solution, based on the image

A large-diameter road tunnel will cross beneath the strait in Istanbul and expand the infrastructure bottleneck between Europe and Asia. The technical planning of the tunneling operations poses complex challenges. Therefore, the construction consortium ordered a specially adapted tunnel boring machine (TBM) from Herrenknecht. The 13.6-m (44.6-ft) machine, a Mixshield, was completed in early July 2013 in Schwanau, Germany. To get from the European to the Asian side of Istanbul, people and goods have to cross the Bosporus Straits. So far, two road bridges as well as ferries provide the only transport link between the two parts of the city and the two continents. The tense traffic situation for the nearly 14 million residents of the city and for international transit traffic should be improved considerably thanks to the construction of a new road tunnel under the Bosporus. ?The project is certainly one of the most challenging tunneling operations currently being addressed in the world,? said Herrenknecht project manager Georg Schleer. The route of the ?Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project? runs around 100 m (330 ft) below sea level at its deepest point. The interior diameter of the tunnel will be 12 m (40 ft) so that two lanes in each direction can be accommodated. They will extend one above the other on two levels. 3.34 km (2.1 miles) of the tunnel with a total length of 5.4 km (3.3 miles) are being created by a 13.6-m- (44.6-ft-) diameter Herrenknecht TBM that will begin its underground mission from a launch shaft on the Asian side.

Highly improved drilling machines and mucking machines have been used for the underground construction. To have rapid construction, the roles of blasting operation ha ve been growing more important. At the most tunneling of present, cartridged emulsion explosives have been used for a blasting in Japan. Under this circumstance, a blasting system of ANFO explosives using loading machine has been used recently for a tunnel blasting. However, ANFO has some problems, such as a useless explosives in wet boreholes, bad blasting fumes and the ammonia gas due to the decomposition of ammonium nitrate in contact with the sprayed concrete in tunnel.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for siting and constructing a licensed geologic repository for commercially generated high-level nuclear waste. Within DOE, the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM) Program has this responsibility. To accomplish this mission, the OCRWM Program is engaged in a multidisciplined effort to identify, qualify, and develop repository sites. The current strategy of the OCRWM Program is to identify candidate repository sites in basalt, tuff, and salt and to develop exploratory shafts at those sites. Within OCRWM, the Salt Repository Project Office (SRPO) identified the salt site for the development of exploratory shafts. The proposed Exploratory Shaft Facility (ESF) in salt will have several primary purposes. The shafts will provide access to the reference repository horizon to permit in situ testing of the salt horizons in order to satisfy the following data acquisition needs: • Verification of the salt repository design parameters and validation of performance assessment models • Demonstration of the constructibility • Capability to adequately seal penetrations into the salt An exploratory shaft is required by 10 CFR Part 60 for the conduct of in situ testing at depth prior to submittal of a license application for construction authorization of a repository. Therefore, construction of an ESF will also facilitate the licensing process.

The application of hydraulic concentration to large scale operations has been effectively accomplished by the use of the SiphonSizer. Operation has been simple, automatic and essentially trouble free. The use of the primary desliming SiphonSizer on magnetic taconites has shown an improvement in grade of concentrate and an increase in recovery over conventional hydroseparators. Magnetic concentrates have been further deslimed and upgraded in SiphonSizers by floating a coarse middling product away from the heavier concentrate. The application of the Siphon-sizer to closed circuit grinding has met with only partial success to date. Hydraulic concentration of minerals has been practiced for a good many years. Until recently, however, the practice has been limited to equipment using a multiplicity of small pockets and relatively low tonnages and flows. The adaptation of the SiphonSizer to the concentration and classification of magnetite has changed this concept. Some fifty commercial units varying in size from a 16-ft diam circular unit to a 25x100-ft rectangular unit are currently in operation on magnetic taconites. Additional units up to 38 ft diam are under construction. Depending upon the application in the flowsheet, upgrading varies from 0.75% to 14% Fe in a single stage. To those not familiar with taconite processing, the importance of the struggle to remove economically as much silica as possible may not be fully appreciated. Perhaps some figures pertaining to transportation costs will underscore this important process. If the silica content of the concentrate from a 10,000,000 ton per year plant could be reduced by I%, a savings in boat freight, at $2.00 per ton, would amount to $200,000 annually! THE SlPHONSlZER The SiphonSizer, as illustrated in Figs. lA, 1B and 2, is a hydraulic classifier in which the hydraulic water is distributed uniformly across the bottom of the vessel by means of a system of headers (1 and 2), jet pipes (3), and nozzles (4). The depth of the teeter bed is automatically maintained by the siphon-float assembly. The feed is introduced through a feed well (5) and separated into two fractions by the effects of rising water and the density of the teetered bed. The magnetite fraction is discharged by the siphon (12) while the fine slime and light middling overflow a peripheral weir (9) to the overflow launder (6). The bed depth is controlled automatically by float valves (7), which are responsive to changes in the height of clear water supported in the superelevation tubes (8) by the density of the teetered bed. As part of the addition of eight new combined cycle generating units at the Florida Power & Light Sanford Plant, 2,129 piles were to be installed. The existing plant elements were supported on driven piles, and the variation in pile lengths during previous work, as well as available subsurface information, indicated a complex stratigraphy. At the request of the owner, the designer/construction manager developed a program to evaluate the use of pressure-grouted displacement piles. A pre-design load test program in areas that represented the apparent extremes in subsurface conditions indicated that the system was feasible; however, the presence of existing features that were to be demolished later precluded the clear delineation of subsurface conditions in advance of construction. A contract was negotiated with the pile installer based on the best estimate of potential pile lengths, with modifications to pile lengths to be set based on additional exploration. A total of 52 cone penetration soundings and five load tests were performed immediately prior to and during pile installation to establish correlations between the CPT data and pile performance. Pile depths were set based on these correlations. Pile installation was completed 6 weeks ahead of schedule and 15 percent under the original budget estimate. This paper documents the evaluation of pressure-grouted displacement piles as an emerging technology, and illustrates the benefits of a close working relationship between the owner, designer, and pile contractor at a site with variable subsurface conditions.

A high calcium fluid-bed combustor ash has been shown to be an effective binder at dosages of 1 to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 Newtons/pellet (5.0 pounds force/pellet), which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. Addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 to 0.2% of the total powder weight increased the strength of dried pellets by as much as 22% compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

The pile capacity gain with time evaluated and implemented for the construction of the Route 21 Viaduct in Newark, NJ, U.S.A is discussed in this paper. The project consisted of the replacement of more than 3.2 km of viaduct and ramps. The project site consists of thick residual materials deposited by the Wisconsin Glacier over sedimentary rocks. The upper portion is glacial-lacustrine deposit underlain by marginal morainic till and stratified drift. Subsurface investigations identified significant variations in layer thickness and grain size consistency. The site was characterized into 4 Soil types, based on subsurface soil behavior. Closed end 600 mm and 450 mm diameter driven pipe piles were used for the foundation. Loading tests conducted during an advanced construction contract, established that a significant soil set-up could be expected. For the first construction contract, a pilot loading test program consisting of 112 dynamic loading tests and 77 re-strikes (at 2 to 4 weeks) using the PDA (Pile Driving Analyzer) with CAPWAP (Case Pile Wave Analyses Program) was conducted to establish the soil set-up behavior. Nine (9) quick static loading tests were conducted to substantiate the long-term pile capacity. Based on the loading test results, average set-up factors were established and utilized for developing production pile driving criteria. Bearing resistance with depth was analyzed and reviewed. The set-up factors varied significantly, ranging from 1.05 to 1.89, and averaged about 1.30. Conclusions are derived. Set-up factors behavior for each soil type plotted by linear regression are presented and discussed. An appropriate set-up with time relationship for a glacial soil is suggested.

THE object of the present paper is to give a brief description of the metallurgical process followed by the Grand Junction Co, and the results obtained therefrom. All figures quoted are from the actual working of the plant over a period of six months from January to June, 1910. The short ton of 2000 lb. is used by the company. Its gold is valued at 84s. per oz. fine, silver at 2s. per oz. fine. The ore consists essentially of a gangue of quartz and calcite, with 8 to 10%sulphide-pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and traces of arsenic and antimony. The colmtry-rock is a highlyaltered dacite. Small stringers of highly-mineralized ore penetrate the footwall of some of the lodes, forming a valuable stockwerk up to 3 ft. in thickness. In stoping, this is mined with the well defined lode, thus bringing into the mill at times a considerable quantity of hard country-rock. The gold exists in an exceedingly fine state of division, consequently rendering it necessary to grind very fine to obtain a satisfactory extraction.

All methods of deep foundation construction present challenges to the contractor and engineer that vary according to the method employed, and the geotechnical conditions in which it is being used. Augered-Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles are generally regarded as one of the most challenging, because the construction method precludes the use of traditional shaft inspection and quality control techniques. Application of Nondestructive Test (NDT) methods can provide quality control for ACIP shafts that traditional methods cannot, but each NDT method has limitations. These make some NDT methods unsuitable for use on ACIP shafts, and may limit the effectiveness of others, depending on geotechnical conditions. To help contractors and engineers working with ACIP piles select the test method most appropriate to specific site conditions, this paper presents a summary of the major NDT methods currently available, and reviews their capabilities with respect to the unique conditions presented by ACIP pile construction. Case histories illustrate how a combination of careful method selection, skilled data interpretation, and experienced engineering judgment have resolved problems and ensured quality in foundation construction by discriminating between potentially serious defects, and those that are unlikely to be significant.

The purpose of this report is to chronicle the interaction between Anglo Platinum and Sandvik Tamrock during the development and application of Long Hole drilling as a viable, practical method of narrow reef mining. Appendix I identifies the people from Anglo Platinum and Sandvik Tamrock who participated in the project. Experiments in long hole drilling and blasting were conducted in a number of mines during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Some of the advantages envisaged were: ? The face would require no daily examination ? No barring down or immediate face support required ? No sockets to clean ? Only a few well drilled holes rather than large numbers of short blast holes ? Avoidance of poorly-marked holes, inaccurate drilling and improper charging ? Better supervision and better face advance. Holes 50 mm in diameter were drilled parallel to the stope face by pneumatic rock drills from advance strike gullies. Holes were charged with amon gelignite cartridges. All holes were traced with detonating cord to ensure propagation of the explosive along the entire hole length. Rock was blasted onto a rolling scatter pile. A number of reasons have been cited for the failure of this mining method. The two most important were: ? problems in controlling hole deviation which was exacerbated by the fractured ground ? difficulty of charging up holes in fractured ground, due to relative movement of rocks along fracture surfaces over the hole length. The idea of drilling a few long holes parallel to the face rather than a large number of short blast holes perpendicular to the face was an attractive option to mechanize narrow reef mining. This particular project started in 1998. Initial trial The Union Section of Anglo Platinum purchased a Solo H 606 RA long hole drilling rig from Sandvik Tamrock in 1997. In order to evaluate long hole drilling as a basis for face mechanization. The Solo series of drill rig was selected because it combines high drilling performance and good drilling accuracy with high versatility with a compact size. The mining method proposed by a consultant to Anglo Platinum was based on the current trackless mining method practised by Union Section. The trackless mining method is better described as a trackless development and transport method. Reef strike drives were installed approximately 40 metres apart on dip using trackless equipment. Reef was mined using hand-held pneumatic rock drills and scraper winches and the excavation was supported by sticks and crush pillars at the top of the panel. Rock scraped from the panel was loaded by Lad Haul Dumps (LHDs), trammed to an inclined haulage, and loaded into trucks for transport to the surface. It was intended that the Solo would drill from the bottom advance strike drive to the top advance strike drive. Blasted rock would still have to be scraped from the panel. It is also difficult to understand how well the support would have survived. In the initial motivation it was stated that drilling accuracy was of the utmost importance. Previous work by Sandvik Tamrock had shown that, in other parts of the world, 20 metre long holes could be drilled with a deviation not exceeding 100 mm provided that: ? holes were collared with low thrust pressure ? operating percussion pressure was kept low -often not ? exceeding 10 MPa ? drilling was to be with tubes, not rods. In early 1998 initial trials with the Solo H 606 RA were inconclusive; attempts were made to drill 40 metre long holes from one advance strike drive to another. Difficulty was experienced in measuring hole straightness and accuracy, there was no survey of the holes, and no blasting was done to expose hole barrels. A long hole mining system was then defined, with a corresponding face mining system, which led to the design of a test programme for the Solo drilling rig. Earlier experience at Telfer The proposed face mining system was based on a mining method that is practised at Telfer Gold Mine in Western Australia. Telfer has a series of domed reefs that dip at angles of less than 20° to more than 40°. The ore bodies are all thin, with widths from 0.6 metres to 0.8 metres. Figure 1 shows the face layout. Experience at Telfer indicated the following: ? The spacing and size of the dip pillars should be based on the rock mechanics of Union Section ? The length of the face is determined by the ability to correctly position the blast holes. Positioning of blast holes is a function of hole straightness and hole direction. Blast holes in Telfer were drilled 64 mm diameter with retrac bits from Sandvik. Extension steel was T38 by 1.8 metre lengths. A guide rod was fitted immediately behind the bit. To achieve greater accuracy' operators drill at relatively low percussion and thrust pressures. Results show that very good accuracy is achieved in 20 metre stopes and only fair accuracy in longer stopes. The testing procedures of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration specify that intrinsic safety acceptance tests be conducted using a standard tungsten-cadmium electrode configuration in the break- flash apparatus. However, in realistic mining environments, other materials may be more likely sources of sparking. Information defining the probability of spark ignition between common materials such as aluminum, brass, copper, lead, tin, cold-rolled steel, and stainless steel is of more practical value in determining ignition hazards. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed an investigation of the influence of material on the ignition probability using the breakflash apparatus. By comparing ignition currents or ignition voltages corresponding to a probability of one ignition per thousand sparks to those found previously for cadmium, a margin of safety may be estimated for each material. This report presents the results of an investigation into the influence of disk electrode material on the probability of ignition.

Working in gassy ground conditions is an everyday occurrence for the U.S. coal mining industry. As tunneling operators begin to venture into projects that expose them to the additional hazard of potentially explosive atmospheres, lessons learned by the mining industry over years of experience should be transferred into this industry. This paper will present practices developed by the U.S. coal mining industry for dealing with the problem of excavating material in potentially explosive atmospheres. Procedures will be discussed that can be used to detect and quantify gas prior to mining that have application to the construction industry. Degasification or drainage practices, including predrainage from vertical and horizontal boreholes, will be discussed. Also, ventilation practices commonly used in the mining industry will be presented.

The aim of this paper is basically to show progress in the study of nanosecond processes involved in the disintegration and breaking-up of mineral complexes with fine noble metals. We studied the influence of nanosecond High-Power Electromagnetic Pulses (HPEMP) on the physical and technological properties of refractory gold-containing ores and beneficiation products. Experimental data are presented to confirm the formation of breakdown channels and selective disintegration of mineral complexes as a result of pulse irradiation, which makes for efficient access of lixiviant solutions to precious metal grains and enhanced precious metal recovery into lixivia during leaching. Preliminary processing of gravity concentrate with a HPEMP resulted in significant increase of gold and silver extraction into lixivia during the cyanidation stage, with gold recovery increased by ~31% (from 51.2% in a blank test to 82.3% after irradiation). Gold recovery from stale gold-containing dressing tailings products increased after pulses-irradiation from 8-12% to 80-90%.

THE object of the work was to increase the capacity of the plant and, if possible, to reduce costs of the actual unit grinding while doing so. The accompanying assays of an infra-sizer analysis of the cyanide tail (Table l) illustrate the problem in hand. The cyanide tail is a combination of two products, gangue and FeS2. The assay alters by virtue of a change in gold value due to grinding and the relative quantity of FeS2 in the sizes, which itself varies with the grind. The disposal tail is the residue after the cyanide tail is scavenged by flotation, most of the pyrite being removed for roasting. It presents a somewhat different problem, since grinding gangue is all gain, but -10 micron FeS2 does not float nearly as well as + 10 product. This results in compromise in the final size to be aimed at. Extra grinding has hardly any appreciable effect on the gold extraction from the FeS2. This case history describes the foundation design and construction for the New Mississippi River Bridge, presently under construction in St. Louis, Missouri. The 1,500 ft (457.2 m) main span of the cable-stayed bridge is supported by two delta tower pylons in the river, with anchor piers on each bank. The final foundation design was completed as a part of an Alternate Technical Concept (ATC) proposal by the winning construction team, and utilized drilled shafts up to 11.5-ft (3.5-m) diameter that were socketed into very hard limestone. As part of the ATC foundation design, a full-scale, bi-directional static load test was performed to verify the design and allow use of higher resistance values. This paper presents the results of the site exploration, construction of the load test shaft, details of the load testing, and a comparison of the test results with various design parameters.

With the proving of a mineable orebody at Orlando in May 1961, Peko Mines N.L. was faced with the decision of whether to mill the ore on site or to haul it 25 miles to central facilities at Peko. Orlando was a relatively small orebody, so that it was decided to haul, although no reliable assessment of possible ore haulage costs was available.The necessity for a good haul road was recognised from the beginning and a 17 mile, 12 ft wide, single seal bitumen road was constructed, to link the mine to the Stuart Highway and Peko. The initial selection of 20 ton capacity diesel-powered end-tipping ore carts was made, with the best information available at the time.Since then some 130,000 tons of ore have been carted over a period of 3 years, and this paper presents the experiences of this haulage operation and the lessons learned.A second mine has just been brought into operation at Ivanhoe, 19 miles from Peko. For this haul it was decided to use an ore haulage vehicle of the side tipping road train type, which would cart some 70 tons, or more than three times the load of the vehicles initially selected.Only about 5,000 tons had been hauled at the date of this paper, but preliminary figures indicate a cost 01 1· 65d./ton-mile as against 2·47d. for the smaller vehicles.It would appear that the road haulage of ore from small outlying mines to a central plant can be highly economical, if certain basic rules concerning haul roads and vehicle selection are followed. This paper does not try to determine the maximum tonnages and haul distances which would finally make road hauling uneconomical...
