This report reviews the following items of equipment: headgear, outer garments, respirators, cap lamp, gloves, knee pads, footwear, boots, helmets, ear protection, eye protection. Recommendations for further research and development are included.

Several economic factors have caused the surface mining industry to require large-capacity shovels and trucks for efficient, high-production, low-cost operations. Some of those factors include technological advancements in equipment, commodity market depressions, increased labor and maintenance costs, contractural obligations and harsh operating conditions. The difficult operating conditions in surface mines, however, pose challenges to the use of high-capacity equipment. They include space limitations, weak over-burden, and weathered soils and rocks. So mining companies face major challenges in selecting appropriate shovels to meet the technical, operating, safety, environmental and economic requirements of their mines.

The coal mining industry in the western United States is seeing the same boom as the rest of the country and the world. Most coal mines in the West are operating flat out as the nation’s appetite for energy continues to grow. And many of the coal mines have either increased their production capacities or are in the process of doing so. However, transportation issues along with environmental restrictions are keeping many mines from expanding even further. Some coal companies held off on further expansion plans until Congress and President Bush could agree on a national energy policy, one that recognizes coal as the nation’s leading source of electricity. In August, Congress passed and the president signed into law such a measure (see Washington Survey, page 7). The legislation includes research funding for clean coal technologies. So western and eastern coal could become even more important in the national energy picture. This is particularly true as supplies of natural gas diminish and the price of oil continues to increase.

This paper briefly describes the progress in mine safety in the United States, with emphasis on recent events that have followed since the explosion at the Sago Mine in January 2006. Legislation following the mine accidents last year and areas of work carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) related to the accidents are discussed. American coal production in 2006 was 1,150 million short tons. Most of this coal is consumed domestically, with annual exports of coal about 50 million tons. One third of annual production is produced at surface mines and the rest from underground. This coal is produced by about 82,000 miners working at 1,400 coal mines. Major improvements in coal mine safety have been made in the US since the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. The fatal injury rate in underground coal mines between 1977 and 2004 was reduced by 47.8% to 0.036. The annual number of fatalities dropped from 112 to 14 during that period. Likewise, the non-fatal days-lost injury rate was reduced by 42.6% from 10.87 to 6.24. The improvements in mine safety during this period can be seen in the graph of underground coal mine explosion fatalities and injuries from 1980 to present, which is shown in Figure 1. Between 1984 and 1993 (9 year period) there were 5 explosions and one major mine fire, for a total of 55 fatalities. Over the seven year period from 1993 to 1999 there were no fatalities from coal mine fires and explosions. However, in the six years since 2000 there have been 5 explosions and one fire, which have caused 37 fatalities. [ ]

The basic objectives of mine roadways are to provide sufficient cross sections in order to meet the needs of accommodation of equipment, transport, personnel travel and ventilation. However, many roadways become damaged to the extent of needing maintenance, generally dinting, and in some cases requiring re-ripping. The damaging of a roadway is a result of several factors including geological properties of surrounding strata, method of roadway formation, type and spacing of support and so on. Among these factors, strata conditions play an important effect on the stability of roadway. Weak rocks cause excessive roadway closures and water softens some rocks and promotes the closure problem. In this paper, a scientific discussion on the effect of water on the stability of roadways is given on the basis of results obtained by means of in-situ investigation and laboratory rock tests.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is engaged in developing, extracting, processing and refining palladium, platinum and associated metals (PGM)from the J-M Reef. This geological formation is located in Stillwater, Sweet Grass and Park counties in southern Montana. Associated byproduct metals include rhodium, gold, silver, nickel and copper. SMC’s current mining operations are near Nye, MT. The company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine, the East Boulder project, about 21 km (13 miles) west of the Nye operations. A 5,650-m (18,550-ft) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore-bearing horizon (J-M Reef).

The earliest known records related to mining document in dramatic terms the fact that mining methods have undergone significant change over the centuries. Wooden wedges, hammers and chisels, “fne setting”, to name a few, were the frst tools used to extract ore .or quarry rock for civilization. These inefficient tools and unsafe practices have been replaced today with some of the highest technology known to man. At the heart of most mining operations is the blasting program which utilizes one of the most efficient tools ever invented.. . explosives. Ever since they were invented, miners have been searching for more efficient products and methods with which to harness this “tool” and make it safer, reliable, and more eficient to use.

Atlas Copco Wagner launched its ST1010 Scooptram load haul dumper. The ST1010 replaces the company’s Wagner ST-1000 Scooptram. The improvements to the Wagner ST1010 include increased reliability, ease of maintenance and driver comfort or ergonomics. The ST1010 has been redesigned and has added several new features and options not offered in the earlier model. These include anew boom design with side stops. Heavy reinforcements to the bogie offer better protection against the harsh working conditions in underground mining and tunneling. An auto lube system has also been added as has paint-on grip tread to reduce slips and falls during maintenance checks or repair work. Other features include a heavy-duty, auxiliary-fan motor, an isolated transverter, remote diagnostic pressure taps, a bolt-on battery box, raised air-intake, improved fuel-filter access for easier maintenance, larger wear-bars around the engine tub, and smaller, higher output batteries

The Finisterre Range on the north coast of Papua New Guinea is the uplifted forearc riagio.n. of a modern arc-continent collision. The core of the range is composed of the P- nisterre Volcanics, an Oligocene''-arc terrane. The southern flank of the range consists of a clastic sedimentary sequence which is an uplifted accretionary wedge and collision complex. This clastic sequence can be subdivided into three distinct units. To the south of aiid structurally below the Finisterre Valcanics are the Mebu beds, an Oligocene- $arly Miocene sequence of volcanolithic turbidites. The Erap Structural Complex is south of, and structurally below the Mebu 43eds. , It consists of three subunits; the 3rly Pliocene micaceous turbidites of the Sukurum unit, contemporaneous pillow basalts AF{ the Basalt unit, and Late Pliocene to Pleistocene volcanolithic turbidites of the -Nariawang unit. The Quaternary Leron Formation, a fluvial to shallow marine 'clastic unit, is the southernmdst. and structurally lowest unit of the clastic -sequence The Finisterre Range is dominated by a fold-and-thrust belt with most thrusts "dipping steeply N. Melange fabric _ is developed in the vicinity of major thrusts. Introduction Stainless steel has by tradition been a common construction material for hydrometallurgy processes and the most common grades can be found amongst the ASTM 300-series, i.e. austenitic grades of type 304L, 316L and 317L. However, there are a number of new grades available today, which imply more cost effective solutions for those designing plants where good resistance to acids, containing the desired metal ions, often contaminated with chlorides and other halides, is the key issue. There are austenitic-ferritic or duplex grades having the same or even better corrosion resistance than the austenitic grades and approximately twice the strength, which enables design in thinner gauges, which in turn implies less weight and less cost. They have also excellent engineering properties, enabling fabrication of process equipment, machinery and different types of tanks. On top of that, they contain less nickel and molybdenum than their austenitic counterparts, which implies not only lower cost for alloying elements, but also a more stable price when considering the price fluctuations for these alloying elements during the last years. This paper describes briefly the family of duplex stainless steel and it presents a number of relevant corrosion tests where duplex grades have been compared with austenitic grades. The results have in several cases been verified by in-plant exposures in zinc and copper production plants. It also describes applications and experience of duplex grades within a variety of hydrometallurgy plants. Installations of highly alloyed austenitic grades will be described as well. The corrosion tests and service experience reported cover hydrometallurgical processes based on sulphuric acid.

United States newspapers of 25 or 30 Years ago ran headlines every few weeks telling of some mine disaster. Each disaster was a first-page attraction for a day or so then was forgotten until the next sensational event, frequently another mine disaster, a few weeks later. Interspersed with the large mine disasters were the so-called ?snipping? mine accidents that caused the death of one or two mine workers. The summation of mine fatalities of all types usually exceeded 3,000 a year, and nonfatal accidents to workers in mines of the country approximated 250,000 annually. From 1906 to 1910, inclusive, there were 84 major explosion disasters (about 17 per year) in. United States coal mines. The resulting fatalities totaled 2,388 for the 5-Year period. These frightful catastrophes helped the number of fatalities in coal mines of the country to reach the enormous total of 13,288 for the 5 years, or an average of 2,658 per year.

The sphere of operations of dry crushing has been so much enlarged of late years that the following notes with reference to its advantages and limitations, and also some practical results in connection with the crushing of gold ores will probably be of service to the members of the Institute. Until recently, with one notable exception that of the Mt. Morgan Gold Mine, dry crushing has only been practiced to a very limited extent in Australasia, and elsewhere it might be said to belong to industries other than mining Its sphere of usefulness depends on the fact that the' product is delivered in a dry state without the separation of the finer particles from the coarser to any appreciable extent, thus enabling the following advantages to be achieved with different ores.

A typical quality program plan is presented for explosion-proof (XP) electrical enclosures. The plan is suggested for manufactures of XP enclosures which are to be certified by MSHA for mining use. The plan describes the quality system, organization and implementing mechanisms which are to be applied in the manufacture and delivery of certified XP enclosures. Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

"Campbell mines has been in operation since 1948. Part of the process consists of roasting of a flotation concentrate which contains arsenopyrite.At present operation level the milling rate averages about 850 t.p.d. and about 48 t.p.d. of concentrate is roasted. The gas emissions at present contain between 3 and 3.5 t.p.d. of arsenic trioxide, about2 - 2.5 t.p.d. of particulate matter and between 19 - 25 t.p.d. of sulphur dioxide. The particulate is extremely fine calcine dust and it assays about 4 oz. Of gold per ton.Until 1974 the gas was discharged untreated through a 125' stack.UntreatedThe decision was made in 1972 to erect a gas treatment plant, construction ran through 1973 and operation began in 1974. The cost of the installation was about 1.3 million dollars.On investigation the process technology, it was apparent that the plant operated by giant Yellowknife for the same purpose was the model we should study. I would like to acknowledge the fine cooperation we had from giant, the plant that emerged is very similar to theirs and incorporates some improvements suggested by them and based on their operating experience.The plant is designed to remove arsenic and solid dust and it has no provisions to remove sulphur dioxide.We depend upon the 125' stack to assure adequate dilution. Because of the nearby airport the stack cannot exceed 125'. A stack burner is provided that can ""y used to heat the stack gas and carry it higher into the atmosphere when there is an inversion condition.The removal of arsenic from hot gas is fairly simple. The sublimation point is about 425°f, a few degrees above this point the arsenic is a gas and a few degrees below it condenses into a solid form. The arsenic could have been removed by simply dropping the temperature below the condensation point and collecting all the solids in a baghouse. This would have removed the possibility of recovering the gold in the calcine dust and would have produced an impure and more bulky arsenic material to be placed in safe storage. The decision was made to collect the solid dust in a hot electrostatic precipitator operating above the sublimation point and subsequently lower the temperature below the condensation point and collect the arsenic in a baghouse."

Most of the information available on the heat efficiency of hot fluid injection processes, both water and steam, has been obtained from calculated temperature distributions in the pay zone and adjacent formations. The usual approach has been to write the heat balance equations in terms of the temperatures, and then to introduce whatever simplifications are necessary to help obtain an analytical or a numerical solution. In either case, the assumption has often been made that the vertical thermal conductivity in the flooded interval is infinite, so that the temperatures within the flooded interval are then independent of vertical position. Because it was first made by Lauwerier,l and has been used extensively since, this assumption will be referred to as the Lauwerier assumption. Excellent reviews of the literature on the heat efficiency of hot fluid injection processes have been given by Spillette,2 Flock et al.,3 and Ramney.4 Of course, the most significant contributions take into account the effect of a finite vertical thermal conductivity on the vertical temperature profile. The most general analytic expression for the heat efficiency of a hot fluid injection process is that of Antimirov5 who considers injection of a heated incompressible fluid into a reservoir through an arbitrary number of wells. The rate of heat injection into the reservoir, as well as the injection temperature, is an arbitrary function of time. The geometry of the horizontal flow is arbitrary, although the reservoir is considered to be of uniform thickness and properties and to be of infinite areal extent. Heat transfer within the reservoir is by horizontal convection and conduc- tion, and by vertical conduction. In the formations adjacent to the flooded interval, heat transfer is by conduction in any direction. Thus, the available expression for the heat efficiency due to hot water injection has been developed for rather general conditions. This degree of applicability has not been obtained for other thermal recovery processes. By making the Lauwerier assumption we have been able to obtain expressions for the heat efficiency that are essentially independent of the thermal recovery process, be it steam, hot-water, or underground combustion. Clearly, then, the approach followed here is more restrictive than that of Antimirov5 in that it uses the Lauwerier assumption. At the same time less restrictive assumptions are made about the horizontal heat transfer mechanisms, either in the flooded interval or in the formations adjacent to it. The main difference between our approach and that of other investigators is that the heat balance in the pay zone is expressed for the pay zone as a whole rather than for a volume element within it. The Lauwerier assumption is introduced after the problem is developed along these lines as far as possible. The details of the development of the heat efficiency are given in the Appendix, while the main features of the model are discussed in the next section. Principal component analysis of the variation of Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Cr in a control group of 96 samples of surface ironstone from the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia, was used to derive a simple graphical method, based on only Cu, Ni, and Cr, for discriminating between massive nickel gossans and other ironstones.When the graph was tested by plotting 400 control samples, it failed to correctly classify only nine out of 176 gossans and 11 out of 224 other ironstones.

A liquid metal flow generated by a magnetic field whose traveling direction is periodically reversed, the Reversed Traveling Magnetic Field (R-TMF) is studied. The modulation frequency ranges from 0 to 6 Hz. Ultrasonic Doppler velocimetry probes the generated fluid flow. Depending on the modulation frequency, a number of characteristic flow features are exhibited. A transition frequency (approximately 4 Hz) exists, above which the flow is no longer sensitive to the force modulation. Below this transition point, the amplitude of the velocity oscillation increases, and then below fm = 0.05 Hz, it saturates around a value close to that observed without any modulation. A theoretical model to obtain an analytical solution of electromagnetic force and to predict flow motion is developed, which is fairly in agreement with the experiments.
