This paper3 describing the mining methods at the Page mine operated by the Federal Mining & Smelting Co., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Page mine is the most westerly of the producing lead-silver-zinc mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of Idaho, being situated 5 miles west of the city of Kellogg and at an elevation of 2,677 feet above sea level. It may be classed as one of the new active producers, of the district and owes its present activity largely to the development of floatation.

FOR a number of years up to the economic setback of the 1929-1931 period, the greatest proportional advances in the mineral industries in California were made among the substances in the nonmetallic groupings, particularly among the so-called industrial minerals and the salines. During the past year or two, although these have not regained the stride that marked their progress in the preceding decade, we can still record, -some new developments. California produces annually between 55 and' 60 different minerals on a commercial scale. Of these, some 40 to 45 comprise the "structural," "industrial," and "salines" materials as grouped in the reports of the State's Division of Mines. "According to the geometrical characteristics of triangular meshes, Triangular Mesh Split Model (TMSM) based on a finite element method is proposed to simulate cracks propagation of fractured rock. With TMSM, stress intensity factors at the tip of cracks are obtained by far-field contour integral. Meanwhile, vector cross multiplication is adopted to fix the cracking unit, and maximum circumferential stress criterion is used to determine the crack propagation angle. Then crack dynamic propagation simulation is realized through local mesh split or node movement at crack tip. With this method, the crack can split apart a unit or extend along the mesh boundary, so the crack could extend along an arbitrary path and is not restricted by the initial mesh. The applicability of the mesh split algorithm is verified by the crack propagation examples of wing crack and multi-fractured rock mass with holes. The results show that this method not only has higher accuracy of fracture parameters calculation, but also can accurately simulate the crack initiation and propagation of rock under complex stress state such as tension, compression and shear. In addition, the far contour integral is introduced to determine the crack tip stress intensity factor and there is no need to reconstruct a singular element at the crack tip or to intensify the meshes. Compared with the existing mesh reconstruction algorithm, this method significantly improves the computational efficiency.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, rock is neither the full continuum, nor entirely discrete body, but rich in geological defects, such as joints and cracks. A large amount of geotechnical engineering practice shows that most fracture of rock is closely related to the internal joints, cracks and crack expansion (Horii et al., 1985; Wong et al., 1998). Although the classical theory of fracture mechanics established the theoretical foundation of crack initiation, propagation, so far it is still extremely difficult to characterize the propagation of airfoil-typed crack and the interference problem of multiple cracks. Up to now, the micromechanics mechanism research of crack propagation of fractured rocks has still been a hot research topic of rock fracture mechanics."

"Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations have evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960s-1970s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980s-1990s. These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of operational excellence.Operational excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining include the following:• Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards.• Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement.There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts.The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to make the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process.This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement."

"INTRODCJCTIONAlveolar macrophages are free lung cells located on the surface of small airways and alveoli. These phagocytes play an important role in the protection of the lung against airborne bacteria and particles.1 However, hyperactivation of pulmonary phagocytes can lead to excessive secretion of enzymes and reactive oxygen species which could result in lung injury, emphysema, or fibrosis.2,3 Analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage effluents for cell types and cellular activity has yielded information concerning the etiology of various pneumoconioses. For example, emphysema associated with inhalation of coal dust or cigarette smoke has been related to enhanced secretion of reactive oxygen species from alveolar macrophages.4-7 In contrast, hypoactivation of alveolar macrophages has been associated with inhalation of diesel particulates"" and has been related to increased susceptibility to pulmonary infection. s Inhalation of cotton dust has been associated with dramatic increases in lavagable polymorphonuclear leukocytes9 while pulmonary sarcoidosis and silicosis have been related with high numbers of lymphocytes in lavage effluentsl0,11The objective of the present study was to obtain lavage effluents from 8 control subjects, 8 healthy power plant workers exposed to fly ash, 1 healthy coal miner, and 1 rock driller with acute silicosis. These effluents were analyzed for total numbers of alveolar macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils and for secretory activity of alveolar macrophages. Data were then analyzed to determine what response patterns were characteristic for given dust exposures.METHODSSelection of SubjectsThe 8 control subjectS were all adult males from the area of Morgantown, WV. Two subjects among the controls had smoked cigarettes for approximately three pack-years and had stopped more than ten years ago. The 8 power plant :workers were all healthy adult male employees of a power facility in Hatfield, PA, approximately thirty miles from Morgantown. One of the power plant personnel was a comparable ex-smoker. The remaining subjects were all lifelong non-smokers. The coal miner was a healthy non-smoking male from Morgantown, WV. The rock driller was a patient under treatment with corticosteroids for acute silicosis. He had shown considerable clinical improvement with this treatment but still manifested significant radiologic and pulmonary functional abnonnalities at the time of lavage. The mean age of the 8 control subjects was 36 years (range: 31 to 49 years); the mean age of the remaining subjects studied was 38 years (range: 29 to 53 years)."

"Rock failure process is generally recorded or measured using conventional sensors like strain gauges, seismic, micro-seismic, acoustic, electromagnetic and other techniques. The above sensors are either to be pasted on the surface of the rock sample or placed very near to it to capture the response of the sample with the increment of load. This requires precise tools to cut or polish the locations where sensors are to be placed. Moreover, deformation or acoustic or micro-seismic activities are recorded only at the locations where sensors are pasted.Recent development in Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique has shown promise to measure deformation / strain at every location of the surface of a sample. In DIC, two images (reference and deformed) are taken within a small time interval of the same object are compared to estimate the change in reflectance as a function of displacement, velocity or rate of strain at each pixel while the object is undergoing through a loading process. In this study, extended digital image correlation (X-DIC) technique has been implemented using 4-noded quadrilateral elements with a discontinuity surface in the deformed image. The continuous and enriched displacements are estimated at each node.The X-DIC method is verified using numerically generated images. The study has been further extended to evaluate the performance of X-DIC method on deformation analysis of experimental samples under uni-axial loading condition. The results of this study show that X-DIC method is an effective tool for determination of displacements of the entire surface of a rock sample having a discrete crack or discontinuity in a non-contact manner. This method demonstrates the applicability to investigate rock failure mechanism for the entire sample in a laboratory set up as well as monitoring of pillar failure mechanism in underground mines."

O início de operação da companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém foi um grande marco para a tecnologia e economia do estado do Ceará. O alto-forno é parte principal da área denominada “Redução”, onde ocorre o processo de transformação das matérias primas (carvão, coque e minério de ferro) no produto ferro-gusa que é a principal matéria prima para o processo de fabricação de aço. A robustez dos equipamentos permite larga capacidade produtiva e por isso ainda é a melhor tecnologia capaz de atender à demanda mundial no consumo de aço. Este trabalho apresenta o plano de início de operação e estabilização do processo do alto-forno, denominado “Início de Sopro”, apresenta os parâmetros definidos para o direcionamento operacional, os índices de performances que balizaram a assertividade no atendimento às metas planejadas. Neste trabalho é possível visualizar os procedimentos para as etapas de comissionamento dos principais equipamentos, a curva de elevação de produção, o atendimento às especificações conforme mensuradas no projeto e os resultados obtidos que sustentaram o sucesso do evento.

RBH Note: The following items are a deviation from the usual content of these articles, but I thought they were kind of interesting from an historical point of view (other than just explosives-history historical.) The interesting things to me are the military-related products, keeping in mind that World War I didn’t start until August, 1914, and then it was kind of an accident of political alliances gone awry. Obviously companies in Germany saw it coming. Of course, all the ads also included dynamite and safety explosives for mining and tunneling as well as the military items.

ABSTRACT: As part of an overall study of properties and processes influencing consolidation of oil sands fine tailings resulting from different extraction processes, self-weight consolidation tests were per-formed. Fourteen 2 m and 1 m high standpipe tests were instrumented to monitor the rate and magnitude of consolidation of seven fine tailings materials. Tests provided valuable information about the variation of consolidation related to differences in fine tailings material properties that result from a change in bitu-men extraction process (caustic versus non-caustic). In addition, the effect of adding a coagulant to caustic fine tailings was measured. Test results are presented and discussed in terms of consolidation rate long-term volume decrease, compressibility, and downward drainage. Non-caustic fine tailings had fasterinitial consolidation, which is important in tailings ponds for reducing storage capacity and returning decant water at a faster rate to the extraction plant. Similar results were obtained for caustic fine tailings with a coagulant addition. However, long-term settlement of the different fine tailings appears to con-verge to a similar value over time because it is then governed by effective stress.

O mercado mundial está se desenvolvendo continuamente em todos os segmentos com a finalidade de melhorar a qualidade e diminuir os custos. O aperfeiçoamento e a criação de novas técnicas de soldagem são responsáveis por conservar as propriedades mecânicas e realizar as soldas com um menor número de defeitos. Este trabalho apresenta o processo de soldagem por fricção com pino consumível, conhecido como FHPP (Friction Hydro Pillar Process) em pino AISI 4340 e chapa AISI 4140. Como toda nova técnica é importante conhecer os parâmetros que serão utilizados no processo. Compreender o efeito da velocidade de rotação, força axial e de forjamento, consumo do pino e taxa de carregamento são necessários para avaliar sua influência na microestrutura da solda. Desta forma, no presente estudo, após a soldagem foram realizadas metalografias, a fim de analisar defeitos macro e microestruturais. Por fim, verificou-se significativa influência dos parâmetros de processo no comportamento metalúrgico da região soldada.

O aço com alto manganês tem sido estudado como alternativa mais barata em substituição às ligas de aço mais utilizadas, devido as suas propriedades de resistência, ductilidade e tenacidade. Foi alterada a composição de manganês para teores acima dos teores dos aços Hadfield, visando sua aplicação em temperaturas criogênicas. Foram obtidas ligas de aço com alto teor de Manganês através do processo de fundição. O objetivo é avaliar as alterações provocadas pelo aumento do Manganês no aço fundido. Através do estudo realizado no Thermo-Calc®, as amostras da liga fundida foram submetidas à laminação a quente e posterior tratamento térmico de solubilização a 700 ºC, com o intuito de manter a microestrutura austenítica. As mesmas foram analisadas quanto à microestrutura por microscopia ótica (MO) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os ensaios de dureza realizados confirmaram a elevada dureza das ligas, bem como a variação entre as ligas no estado fundido e solubilizado.

At the present paper, synthesis of magnesia from ferronickel smelting slag is discussed. The first stage was extracting magnesium from the slag by leaching in HCl solution. Magnesium extraction of 97% was obtained from the slag leaching with HCl 8 molar, solid:liquid ratio 1:40 (g/ml) and temperature 80 °C after 24 h. Solution purification was performed by adjusting solution’s pH at 95 °C with addition of MgO powder. At pH range range of 3–4, co-dissolved iron was removed as akagenite (b-FeOOH) precipitate. Dissolved nickel precipitation was detected at pH range of 4–6, while dissolved Mg and Al started to precipitate in the forms of pyroaurite (Mg6Fe2CO3(OH)16∙4H2O) and hydrotalcite (Mg6Al2CO3(OH)16∙4H2O) at pH range of 8–9. High purity of brucite (Mg(OH)2) was obtained by Mg precipitation at pH range of 11–12, under stirring speed of 300 rpm and stirring time of 4 h. Calcination of brucite at temperature of 1000 °C completely converted brucite to periclase (MgO) powder after 240 min.

Discussion of the paper of T. D. YENSEN, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 483 to 512. JOHN A. MATHEWS, Syracuse, N. Y.-Concerning the critical composition of the steel containing 2.50 per cent. of silicon, I may say that 12 or 13 years ago we made some of these alloys. They. were not as pure as the alloys made by Mr. Yensen, nor were they melted in vacuo, but one of them contained exactly 2.50 per cent. silicon, and about 0.25 per cent. carbon. It gave us no trouble whatever in hammering to a billet or rolling into bars, nor even when rolling into ¼ -in. wire rods. The steel in question was practically free from everything except carbon or silicon and contained no manganese sulphur or phosphorus worth mention. The alloy containing 2.50 per cent. of silicon worked perfectly well, as well as one containing 0.5 per cent. silicon, and it seems to me that further work should be done by Mr. Yensen on the physical properties of alloys at this seemingly critical change point. W. E. -RUDER, Schenectady, N. Y.-We -have made silicon steels of practically every composition and have never obtained any material under 5 or 6 per cent. of silicon which was brittle. This may be due, of course, to the presence of carbon, in some of the 'commercial materials, and I presume that Mr. Yensen would argue that the: presence of this carbon might prevent inter-granular brittleness. However, all of our silicon steels, up to 5 per cent. of silicon, by treatment in hydrogen at temperatures near the melting point, can be made to show inter-granular brittleness. Furthermore, the material made brittle in this way could be restored by treating at the same temperature in hydrogen containing a hydrocarbon vapor. O objetivo do grupo foiestratificar o custo de produção do equipamento e atuar nos principais fatores, tendocomo princípio a redução do desperdício, aumento da produtividade da mão de obra,aliada a produtividade de tonelagem de material. Na estratificação do custo deprodução identificamos o “Rendimento metálico” como sendo o fator maissignificativo e propomos ações internas que contemplaram alteração de programade automação para melhora do descarte da cauda (Final) da bobina e com issoatingindo valores recordes de aproveitamento material acabado. Fizemos reduçõesde lead time do nosso processo eliminando os tempos que não agregam valores,aumentando a produtividade do equipamento. Com este trabalho conseguimosreduzir consideravelmente o custo de transformação do equipamento, além, deaumentar sua capacidade produtiva.

"Although one takes into account only thermal expansion usually at analysis of convection onset, the essential factors include magnetic and electric fields. If Lorentz-force originating from intercrossed electric and magnetic fields' action is directed downwards its effect strengthens gravitational action, and value of critical Rayleigh number (limit value for convection onset) must decrease; increasing of critical Rayleigh number should be observed in case of Lorentz-force directed upwards. Extent of such an influence is determined by relation of Lorentz-force to hydrostatic head in gravitational field. Competition between electromagnetic force due to nonuniformity of electroconductivity (on account of its temperature dependence) and electromagnetic buoyancy force may have ambiguous effect: both increase or decrease of critical Rayleigh numbers. Proposed conception is applicable to analysis of situations in liquid conductors and conductive gases.IntroductionStatic or dynamic situations in fluid media are determined besides properties of these media by a variety of external influences. However one correlate~ the onset of the convection and its development with influences of the minimum quantity of external causes frequently. Most known and usual factors are the gravitational and temperature fields. The number of processes includes heat generation in media volume, and theoretical analysis in these cases takes into account this interior heating together with boundary temperature conditions. But explanation of many natural and technical events is not complete and cogent within limits of thermo-gravitational terms. The whole complex of acting factors which influence convective processes in techniques and nature is greater in many cases. In particular the action of · electromagnetic nature often has not less importance than gravitation one. Stability or instability of a current layer in the plasma must be determined by non-uniformity of electroconductivity owing to non-uniformity of temperature [1]. The presence of Joule dissipation in the plasma through which the electric current flows stipulates initiation of origin of overheated instability [2]. It is known that electroconductivity of arc in the boundary zone changes sharply with radial distance [3], and this must influence its stability essentially. If the intercrossed electric current and magnetic field begin to act on an electroconductive fluid besides the non-uniform temperature field and the gravity, the conditions for the onset of the convection change radi- . cally: both the temperature field and their solutions have to be changed also. The analysis of equilibrium single-time correlation functions of fluctuations must be employed for situations with enlarged number of factors as this was in case for the Rayleigh-Benard problem where the object is a horizontal layer of liquid. This can be carried out by taking into account the detached forces' correlations [ 4, 5]"

Surface tension of mold flux is a key factor affecting optimum casting conditions. A thermodynamic model was developed to determine the surface tension of mold flux containing fluoride based on the ion and molecule coexistence theory of slag structure and Butler’s equation. The relationship between composition and surface tension was investigated by this model. Results indicated that the calculated values showed good agreement with literature data, and the average error was 8.19%. The surface tension value of the CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux was larger than that of the CaO– SiO2-based mold flux. The surface tension in a multi-component system decreased with increasing contents of SiO2, CaF2, and Na2O, which are considered surface-active components. This trend was more significant in the CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux.

"Ti-V magnetite is one of the most abundant composite ore resources in the world. This ore cannot be fully processed via blast furnace technology because of high content of Ti02. According to the investigations carried out in the USA and Japan ITmk3 RHF (Rotary Hearth Furnace) technology is a breakthrough in Ironmaking. Reduction, melting and slag removal can be achieved in just 10 min. The main objective of the investigation is to establish optimum operation conditions for the production of iron nuggets from Ti-V magnetite ore via the ITmk3 by means of the lab scale testing. Samples of ore from the Maly Kuybas deposit (Southern Ural), carbon reductant and fluxes were chemically analyzed. Green pellets were processed via a lab chamber furnace to simulate RHF conditions. The nuggets and slag were chemically analyzed. This preliminary test work provides valuable information which may be used for large-scale testing in a commercially sized RHF.IntroductionThe ITmk3 process upon which this paper focuses was developed by Kobe Steel in its research facilities [l]. After pilot testing at Kobe Steel's Kakogava Works in 1999-2004 the pilot demonstration plant was built and operations were successfully carried out by Mesabi Nugget joint venture in 2002-2004. Steel Dynamics put into operation the commercial plant at the Mesabi Nugget site in Hoyt Lakes (Minnesota) in 2010. Results were consistent with nugget characteristics confirming ITmk3' s flexibility with respect to raw material inputs. At the same time, no research in the field of nugget from the Ti-V magnetite bearing ore with high content of Ti02 and Alz03 has been done. It is well known, if a lot of Ti02 and Alz03 enter the blast furnace, slag becomes viscous. The viscous slag is obstacle for stable operation of the blast furnace. Besides, high content of Alz03 raises the melting temperature of gangue minerals disturbing the coalescence of reduced iron to the nuggets."

Ante la compleja topología de la minera Antamina, se hace más difícil la ubicación de infraestructuras como las instalaciones y principalmente botaderos. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala el diseño, plan de desarrollo y secuencia de botaderos a gran altura realizado por el grupo de Ingeniería de Mina, bajo el asesoramiento del grupo de Geotecnia Mina. Para el área de influencia del botadero se desarrollaron técnicas de manejo de agua superficiales y manejo de suelos que garanticen la estabilidad del mega botadero a construir, y durante la etapa de construcción de los botaderos, se establecen técnicas de monitoreo de taludes en material de relleno muy estrictos. De forma que se continúe con la operación del yacimiento minero a gran escala.

Nos últimos anos diversos trabalhos evidenciam a possibilidade de utilização de small coque como constituinte da carga metálica dos altos-fornos, visando a redução na temperatura da zona de reserva térmica. Esse trabalho avalia a viabilidade técnica, em escala laboratorial, da produção de um determinado small coque altamente reativo, através da adição de 2 catalisadores: pellet feed e cal virgem totalizando 3% em massa, em sua superfície. Foram realizadas caracterizações químicas dos catalisadores por meio de Fluorescência de Raios-X (FRX) e avaliados os impactos destas adições sobre CRI (Coke Reactivity Index) e CSR (Coke Strength after Reaction) das amostras produzidas. Os resultados mostraram aumentos acima de 2% na reatividade do small coque, tanto para a adição de cal virgem quanto para pellet feed, porém mais significativo para a adição de cal virgem, comprovando que a técnica de Pós-adição de catalisadores da reação de Boudouard no small coque, pode ser uma alternativa para redução de custo e emissões de CO2 no Alto-Forno.

In this research, we devised a measurement method using total stations (TSs) which have ?the Baum? which is a concentric circle reticle, as substitute for crosshairs. The Baum owes its name to the similarity between the concentric circles and trees (Baum in German). By setting one circle on both of edges of cylinders, operators can set their sights on points on the center line of the cylinders, and also can measure positional coordinates of the points. Also, by measuring two different points on the center line, operators can measure the position and tilt of the axes of the cylinders. Furthermore, we developed a pile driving navigation system. Foundation piles are used for various structures, and their forms are generally cylindrical. Especially, although it is difficult to drive tilted pile foundations, their usage are expected to expand due to their high earthquake resistance. Yet, a method to accurately measure the tilts of piles has not been established. However, we proved that operators can obtain adequate accuracy to control foundation piles through the measurement experiment using this system. Using this system, the information of the pile is measured using a TS, transferred to a PDA, and displayed from the operator?s view of the piling machine.
