A special short-term research project was initiated to develop plant design parameters for treating mine waters to yield an effluent acceptable for discharge into streams and a sludge amenable to effective and economic disposal. Neutralization was investigated to provide simple and direct treatment of ferruginous acid waters using lime; coarse limestone, and limestone followed by lime. Limestone treatment was accomplished using a small cement mixer as a simple reactor to provide abrasive agitation of limestone and mine water. Results from tests with nine mine waters encompassing a wide range of iron and acid concentrations showed that coarse limestone, one of the cheapest neutralizing agents known, is potentially useful for treating mine water discharges. However, process variables must be defined more completely before the practical applications and limitations of the process can be fully established. In all the tests a pH of >7.2 was obtained ultimately with limestone. Reaction time to reduce the iron content below 7 ppm in the water was dependent on the original ferrous iron concentration. For waters with high ferrous iron content, treatment with limestone followed by lime rapidly produced an acceptable treated water, Sludges with good settling and handling characteristics resulted when limestone was used for neutralization either alone or with subsequent treatment. Reaction rates are expressed graphically as pH change and iron depletion curves; characteristic solids settling curves are shown. The temperature dependency of ferrous iron oxidation was verified.

In April of 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. One of the areas excavated systematically was the furnace taphole. The aim was to obtain a refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area, together with affected hearth and sidewall refractory. Subsequently, thermodynamic modelling was applied to quantify the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area.

DeGrussa Copper Mine, resource status 10.2 Mt at 5.7 per cent Cu, 2.1 g/t Au (Sandfire Resources, 2013), commenced concentrate production through its 1.5 Mt/a conventional copper flotation processing plant in September 2012. Geometallurgical assessment during the feasibility study identified potential process-critical ore factors that required further investigation to determine potential impact on processing. Ore characterisation and metallurgical processing performance test work of ore types ensued and subsequently, the first quantitative DeGrussa geometallurgy model was born. Now one year into steady state production, the geometallurgical program has evolved significantly from its infancy and provides valuable insight into ore characterisation and behaviour in the processing plant. Em aciarias elétricas, o consumo dos insumos tem impacto importante na composição do custo final do aço, dos quais se destaca o consumo de energéticos utilizados no forno elétrico a arco, que pode representar até 30% do custo operacional de uma aciaria. Para quantificar o aporte desses diferentes tipos de energia é utilizado o indicador de consumo de energia total FEA + FP, que associa fatores de equivalência a cada tipo de energético de forma a transformar sua unidade de medida para a unidade base de kWh/t. Nesse trabalho foi realizado um teste no formato de projeto de experimentos, variando-se as vazões de gás natural e/ou oxigênio em um dos modos de queimador e em três modos de lança a fim de modificar suas proporções O2/GN e avaliar o impacto no consumo de energia total.

Foi verificado que em uma das prensas de rolos (HPGR, High Pressure Griding Rolls), das usinas de pelotização de Tubarão, estava ocorrendo escorregamento do minério entre os pinos (studs) ocasionando um desgaste excessivo no rolo e desprendimento dos pinos. Este fato levou ao desenvolvimento de uma solução para eliminar o problema através da utilização de um produto que contivesse as características necessárias para conter o desgaste e prolongar a vida útil do rolo, sem comprometer a performance da prensa. As etapas para solução do problema passou por uma definição da escolha do produto, preparação da superfície do rolo e método de aplicação. Após implantada a solução, foram comparados os resultados antes e depois da aplicação do produto. Os resultados mostraram que o objetivo foi alcançado quanto a retenção dos pinos, controle do desgaste e manutenção da performance de processo desta prensa.

The Tilly Foster iron-mine is situated in the southeastern part of Putnam County, New York, about fifty miles north of New York City, on the line of the New York City and Northern Railroad. There are a number of deposits of magnetite scattered throughout the county, the most important being those known as the Tilly Foster, the Mahopac, and the deposits of the Croton Magnetic Ore Company. In April, 1975 the Colorado School of Mines began monitoring rock mass response associated with a long- wall shield demonstration project near Raton, New Mexico. This project was sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Mines (DOE) and performed at Kaiser Steel Corporation's York Canyon Mine. Two of the results of the intensive instrumentation effort are the empirical subsidence and horizontal strain models presented herein. These models are based on data gathered during mining three adjacent longwall panels (4N, 5N and 6N). A total of 251 permanent surveying monuments were monitored over the three-panel area. Lines of monuments were oriented along panel centerlines, perpendicular to centerlines and diagonal (45O) to centerlines. Active monuments were monitored twice a week, with less frequent monitoring of stable or slow moving monuments. Primary subsidence monitoring equipment consisted of an AGA Geometer Model 75 and a Wild T-2 Theodolite with -a Wild-Sercel DI-3S distomat.

Preg-robbing activity of the carbonaceous matter negatively impacts the process of precious metals recovery from gold-bearing ores and concentrates. In this paper, ore heap leaching (HL) using a blinding agent which inhibits ‘preg-robbing’ is a promising method. A carbonaceous ‘preg-robbing’ gold ore with head gold grade of 1.92 g/t from a Russian deposit was studied. Corg was 1.12%. In accordance with the Irgiredmet technique, preg-robbing activity was 65.3%. Surfactant reagent DN was used as the blinding agent. Column tests on the ore HL were conducted using two options. They were: a conventional flow sheet (Column 1) and a flow sheet with the reagent addition (Column 2). Gold recovery in Column 1 was 55.39% while gold recovery in Column 2 was 68.48%. O Alto Forno 3 (AF3) da Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) é o equipamento muito importante no processo siderúrgico da Usina Presidente Vargas (UPV), situada em Volta Redonda (RJ), por responder por mais de 70% da produção de gusa da UPV. Na produção de gusa é gerado o Gás de Alto Forno (GAF), subproduto de alta relevância, pois este gás sai do topo do AF3 com grande pressão e cinética, energia essa passível de utilização. Em 2007 a CSN, optou por adquirir um equipamento denominado “Top Pressure Recovery Turbine” (TRT), capaz de aproveitar tal energia para gerar energia elétrica. Em 2013, a equipe de supervisores da KHI – Kawasaki Heavy Industrie, fabricante da turbina, veio para o Brasil para realizar no equipamento os testes a frio e a quente para na seqüência vir a operá-lo. Ocorre que fatores alheios ao objetivo desta apresentação impediram a equipe da KHI de partir o equipamento no tempo previsto, bem como de retornar ao Brasil para dar seqüência nas atividades. Em novembro de 2013 a CSN definiu por partir o equipamento com recursos próprios, sendo este o foco do trabalho. A presente contribuição técnica vem mostrar o trabalho desenvolvido internamente pelo grupo técnico a fim de finalizar o projeto e colocar a Turbina de Topo (TRT) em operação, fato este dado total ênfase pela direção da empresa devido ao cenário nacional de crise energética em que os valores de energia estavam no limite máximo permitido pela legislação e impactando diretamente nos custos da empresa.

The 15m high Inco flash furnace uptake was designed as a reaction chamber with the objective of destroying the H2S contained in the furnace off-gas by combustion with oxygen at about 1300?C. Until recently, the oxygen required for this purpose was injected through afterburners located at the bottom of the uptake. An undesirable side effect of this practice was the formation of build up accretions on the inside walls of the uptake. This buildup had a negative impact on both the furnace on line time and the control of the flash smelting process. In late 200 I, the afterburners were relocated to the roof of the uptake. As a result, about 80% of the uptake accretion buildup disappeared with obvious beneficial effects for the operation of the furnace. This paper discusses key flash smelting aspects that affect the operation of the flash furnace uptake such as the dusting rate, the formation of H2S in the freeboard of the furnace, and the impact of using coke to supply some of the heat required by the process. The mechanism of buildup formation and its dependence on uptake afterburners location are also examined. Prof. Yazawa's sulfide smelting thermodynamic relationships proved instrumental in understanding the conditions that influence the formation and the elimination ofH2S and uptake buildup.

Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12 V, 24 V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

A high-Btu gas was made at the Bruceton, Pa., laboratories of the Bureau of Mines to demonstrate the feasibility of using the gas as a nonpolluting fuel for automobiles. The pilot plants at Bruceton were revised to combine the processes of coal gasification, gas purification, and catalytic methanation in one overall system. Tests in the Bureau's test automobiles at Bartlesville, Okla., showed the Synthane gas was less polluting than natural gas.

Extraction of gold from refractory gold concentrates usually requires an oxidation step to remove arsenides、sulphides and carbonaceous matter. In this investigation, the gold concentrates were two-stage roasted under different atmospheres and temperatures. Results indicated that at the first stage, under neutral atmosphere, the removal rate of arsenic increases as the temperature rises. Under the oxidizing atmosphere, with the increase of temperature, arsenic content in the residued calcine increases, in addition, the volatilization of arsenic is also affected by the oxidation of carbon that generated CO, which is advantageous to the decomposition of arsenate decomposition. At the second stage of roasting, it is the higher temperature and stronger oxidizing atmosphere, the faster sulfur and carbon oxidated rate is, but at the same time, the calcine appears the phenomenon of consolidation because of the phase of silicate compounds generate.

"The TiO2-rich slag and pig iron can be produced from ilmenite concentrate by the electric furnace process. In this study, ilmenite concentrate was reduced in a vertical furnace equipped with a weighting data acquisition system. The effects of reducing agent (carbon) amount on the iron reduction were studied. The phase transformation, morphology and chemical compositions of reduced samples were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. It was found that the reductive degree of ilmenite concentrate increased with the increase of reducing time. The phases of reduced samples were mostly iron, rutile, Ti3O5 and Fe2TiO5. The mass loss percentage increased with increasing the carbon amount from 8% to 12%. When the carbon amount exceeded 12%, the mass loss percentage decreased with the increasing of carbon amount.IntroductionIlmenite and rutile are the main raw materials for producing titania pigment and titanium metal. With the development of the titanium industry, huge amounts of titanium resources are needed. As sources of high-grade titania mineral decrease worldwide, more attention should be paid to the processes involving low grade mineral such as ilmenite ore. In ilmenite, MgO and CaO are the gangue parts. Therefore, the ilmenite refining becomes more and more popular. In the previous studies, the methods of ilmenite refining are electric furnace smelting, direct acid leaching, selective chlorination and thermal reduction [1]. Electric furnace smelting method is widely used in the titanium industry, however, which consumes a great deal of energies and has a high CO2 emission. Its essence is to remove iron oxides and obtain a high titania slag. So the thermal reduction of ilmenite concentrate is an important step in titanium industry, which can decrease carbon reagent consumption and save energy.Over the past several decades, many studies have been carried out on the mechanism and kinetics of the reduction of different ilmenite ores, which are as follows: The carbothermal reduction of Panzhihua ilmenite initiated at about 860 oC. In the temperatures ranging from 900 oC to 1400 oC, the reaction rate was changed like a shape of “M”. That was to say that the reaction rate increased with the growth of temperature at first, then decreased, afterward increased again and at last the reaction was arrested [2]. The Mohammad A.R group [3, 4] showed that the carbothermal reduction of primary ilmenite concentrate was faster in hydrogen and initiated at a lower reduced temperature than in argon and helium. The reduction in argon and helium had about the same rate and extent. Titanium oxycarbide started at 1000°C in hydrogen. The conversion of primary ilmenite concentrate to metallic iron and titanium oxycarbide at 1200 °C was completed in 300 minutes. Monoxide as the reductant to reduce ilmenite had been studied intensively by a few research groups [5, 6]. The rate and the degree of reduction depended on the formation of a metallic shell of iron which inhibited the transfer of CO to the reaction zones; titanium had a strong effect on the mechanism and rate of reduction of iron oxides. Wang and Yuan [7] studied the reductive kinetics of the reaction between a natural ilmenite and carbon. At temperature below 1100°C, chemical reaction was the rate controlling step, at 1100 to 1250°C mixed controlling was rate controlling step, above 1250°C diffusion through the product layer controlled the reaction. Zhang [8] investigated the reduction of natural, sintered and preoxidized ilmenite concentrates in hydrogen methane mixtures. Preoxidation and sintering of ilmenite concentrates changed their phase composition and caused a sharp decrease in specific surface area of raw materials and an increase in carburization temperature. Sintering also increased the metallization temperature of iron."

THE most concentrated industry of major character in the United States is that of the Ford Motor CO., which is to say Henry Ford. Its sole function is to supply the public with a cheap motor car which it does to the extent of two million or so per annum. In doing this, a relatively small profit per unit is multi- plied to an enormous aggregate per annum and has resulted in the creation of one of the greatest industrial fortunes of the world. The industrial and sociological consequences of .this are bound to be immense. On the physical side the production of two million automobiles means the consumption of two or three million tons of materials, chiefly metals, in the 'direct form of the finished product', and a huge additional tonnage of coal and other things that ,are consumed en route, and also the labor of many thousands of men. In the development of a business on this scale it was but natural that the Ford Motor ,Co. should seek to supply itself with the raw 'materials it needs, and they being so largely coal and metals the company is brought into close contact with the mining and metallurgical industries. It is a huge consumer of - steel. It is the fourth largest consumer of copper. It is a large consumer of lead, tin, aluminum and zinc. The mining and metallurgical industries have, therefore, good reason to learn to know Henry Ford, his personality, his thoughts and his policies.

"INRODUCTIONSedimentary deposits of titaniferrous magnetite occur at various localities in the eastern foothills of the Teton Ranse in Deer Lodge County, Mont. The Choteau deposit was examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer in August 1942. An exploration project was recommended.Core drilling exploration was begun in June 1945; it was concluded in August 1945, Seventy-six holes were drilled. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau of Mines exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral, deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective, the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contri¬bution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Thorium and yttrium oxides were recovered from siliceous ores of the Powderhorn , Colo . , area . Processing comprised ( 1 ) acid curing and subsequent ( 2 ) acid baking , ( 3 ) leaching , and ( 4) solvent extraction of thorium , using a primary alkylamine , and yttrium , using di - 2 - ethylhexyl phosphoric acid . About 95 pct of the contained thorium and yttrium was recovered from ore containing 1.2 pct Th02 and 0.5 pct Y₂ 03. The thoria product was 99 pct Tho ; the yttria product was 77 pct Y₂ 03. A 150 - to - 1 concentration ratio was effected on the latter , but some contaminating lanthanon - group oxides remained .

A análise da estampabilidade de chapas metálicas consiste em ensaios e testes tecnológicos para obtenção de características específicas para os processos aos quais o material será submetido. Dentre as principais análises, pode-se destacar o ensaio de tração, a curva de escoamento e o índice de anisotropia, que fornecem dados a respeito do comportamento mecânico dos materiais, como a resistência, a ductilidade, o encruamento, entre outros. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de avaliar a estampabilidade dos aços carbono AISI 1008 e AISI 1010 através dos ensaios de tração, ensaios para determinação da curva de escoamento e ensaios para determinação do índice de anisotropia. Para tanto, foram extraídos corpos de prova de chapas dos dois aços de baixo carbono, seguindo as normas ASTM E8/E8M e ASTM E517, para realização e análise dos resultados dos ensaios. Com base nos resultados obtidos, pode-se aferir que o aço 1008 possui maior ductilidade e melhores características anisotrópicas do que o aço 1010, que por sua vez apresenta maior resistência mecânica. Portanto, é possível concluir que o aço AISI 1008 apresenta melhor estampabilidade a partir de todas as propriedades adquiridas nos ensaios mecânicos.

In the present paper a new and highly economic route for Fe-separation from HCl leaching processes in hydrometallurgical applications is described. In most ore leaching processes, Fe is involved and needs to be separated; HCl has become an interesting leaching agent, because it can be recycled. Usually a mix of Fe2+ and Fe3+ is obtained which can be hydrolyzed directly (in case only Fe3+) or roasted via pyrohydrolysis (in case of Fe2+) to ferric oxide. Economic oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ is described, and potential technologies for regeneration of HCl with separation of Fe are shown and compared.
