The 25th annual survey of the peat industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, disclosed that 79 companies produced and sold peat from 81 operations in 21 States in 1958. Peat is a carbonaceous deposit, formed under water or in a water-saturated environment from plant material. It is the first stage in the development of coal and, when properly dried, can be used as fuel. Although 98 percent (estimated) of the total world production is used for energy purposes, the status of peat in the United States is somewhat unique in that none is used for fuel, and practically all is consumed as an agricultural product, chiefly for soil improvement purposes. The domestic peat industry has expanded rapidly since World War II, and production in 1958 was 327,813 net tons valued at $3,445,767. More than one-half million ton of peat was consumed in the United State in 1958, however, as 269,096 tons was imported.

Embora a metalurgia do pó e o forjamento sejam técnicas totalmente consolidadas no mundo industrializado, surge o forjamento de sinterizados e o sinterforjamento para somar as vantagens de cada processo convencional em uma única técnica de processamento. O presente trabalho propõe a obtenção de uma peça denominada cruzeta, forjada utilizando billet sinterizado como matéria prima. O pó de ferro ASC 100,29 e o grafite UNICARBO 50- fino foram utilizados para obtenção do Billet , através da metalurgia do pó convencional, pressão de 600 MPa, a partir da curva de compressibilidade. Foi escolhida a cruzeta como peça alvo, devido a seu uso na indústria automotiva. A geometria da peça foi modelada em Solidworks e posteriormente realizado o projeto e construção das matrizes para o forjamento. Realizaram-se ensaios de compressão para determinar e analisar a densificação do produto, em função dos fechamentos de poros, do billet sinterizado. Ainda, foram realizados cálculos de volume para determinar a altura do billet necessária para o preenchimento da cavidade da geometria determinada. Confeccionaram-se billet sinterizados a 1150ºC em atmosfera redutora, mantido até 900°C e rapidamente transferida para uma matriz fechada de forjamento para a execução do processo de sinterforjamento a morno. Foram realizados ensaios metalográfico, de dureza e microdureza do billet sinterforjados para validação do processo. Após este processo, obteve-se peças sinterforjadas, onde analisou-se o preenchimento, ausência de dobra e trincas macroscópicas.

Each year hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system to improve safety during operation and maintenance at a concrete batch plant. INTRODUCTION Of the hundreds of machinery-related accidents occurring every year in the mining industry, incidents involving stationary machinery at surface mines continue to be amongst the most frequent [1]. A National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) study showed that the majority of fatal accidents involving stationary machinery at surface mines occurred at sand and gravel (38%) and stone (26%) operations. Of these accidents, entanglement in conveyor components were the most common cause of fatal accidents (48%) [2]. The same study stated that one-third of these accidents involved improper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures as a contributing factor. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) acknowledged this problem, stating in a recent request for information (RFI) [3]: “Since 2007, there have been 17 fatalities related to working near or around belt conveyors, of which 76 percent were related to miners becoming entangled in belt drives, belt rollers, and discharge points. Factors that contribute to entanglement hazards include inadequate or missing guards, inadequate or an insufficient number of crossovers in strategic locations, and/or inappropriate lock out/tag out procedures. Systems that can sense a miner's presence in hazardous locations; ensure that machine guards are properly secured in place; and/or ensure machines are properly locked out and tagged out during maintenance would reduce fatalities [3].” In response to this problem, NIOSH’s Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is exploring the potential application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide cost-effective intelligent machine monitoring systems for improved worker safety [4, 5]. SMRD partnered with Central Pre-mix CRH Company (Central Pre-mix) to develop and install a proof-of-concept wireless IoT solution to monitor machinery and conveyors during operation and maintenance. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the Co and Mn resource of the West-Central Arkansas District, including field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation, and hydrometallurgical tests. The deposits occur within the Ouachita Mountains and are con-trolled structurally, occurring along the axes of anticlines making up the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of Mn oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilome-lane. Cobalt is concentrated within a particular Mn oxide phase, lithiophorite. Chemical analyses on head samples reported up to 25 pct Mn and 0.17 pct Co. Magnetic separation yielded products with up to 41 pct Mn and 0.22 pct Co at recoveries of 95 pct Mn and 93 pct Co.

"A sensitive colorimetric assay for detecting mucins and glycoproteins rich in 0-glycosidically linked saccharides is reported. The method combines the susceptibility of N-acetylgalactosamine terminating 0-glyco idically linked saccharides to P-elimination with the Morgan-Elson reaction for N-acetylhexosamines with free reducing ends. All mucin and mucin-type glycoproteins but none of the serum-type glycoproteins tested resulted in characteristic color production. All mucins tested gave linear responses in the range 5 to 200 ""g and the assay was also adapted to the microscale involving the use of 96-well microtiter plates. The microassay in which the volumes of samples and reagents are scaled down 2.5-fold was particularly useful in monitoring of mucins, in the presence of other glycoconjugates, in large numbers of samples obtained during fractionation procedures. Cesium chloride, cesium bromide, potassium thiocyanate, and various detergents do not interfere with the colorimetric determination. Guanidine hydrochloride, cesium triftuoroacetate, and B-mercap- . toethanol decreased color by 30 to 45%; however, the interference was not serious to prevent the use of the method for detection of mucins in their presence. The use of the method for the specific detection of mucin during fractionation by gel filtration and density gradient centrifugation of cystic fibrosis sputum samples is demonstrated. Mucins are an important class of biomacromolecules whose structure-function relationship is poorly understood (1,2). The investigations of mucins are hampered by difficulties in purifying these very large size molecules which appear to avidly bind other components of the mucus (3,4). One of the problems during purification is the specific detection of mucins. For example, during the various purification steps, the fractions containing mucins are typically detected by assaying for neutral sugars (hexoses) (5,6), for sialic acids (7), or for periodate oxidizable saccharide units (8). However, these methods are not entirely satisfactory because neutral sugars, sialic acids, and periodate-oxidizable saccharides are also components of other glycoconjugates. In addition, the neutral sugar and sialic acid measurements are also subject to interference from high levels of proteins and nucleic acids."

Non-isothermal multiple scanning rate analysis method was used to analyse the solid-state reduction of nickel laterite by carbon. According to the TG curves, the activation energies were calculated and the most probable mechanism functions were determined by the Malek method. The results show that the process can be divided into three stages according to the reaction degree (a): 0–40%, 40–70%, 70–100%, respectively. In the stage of 0 a 0.40, the most probable mechanism function fits the chemical reaction order function. In the stage of 0.40 a 0.70 and 0.70 a 1.0, the process may not be exactly described by one mechanism function.

In the latest AASHTO design specifications, the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method is prescribed for the design of retaining walls. However, inconsistencies arise when LRFD is used for retaining wall design versus the traditional Allowable Stress Design (ASD). Required toe embedment and wall loading demand vary greatly when the two design approaches are compared, all else being equal. This is due to application of linear load factors to properties that vary non-linearly in the design. These inherent inconsistencies are further intensified when introducing factors such as layered soil profiles, different wall types, groundwater elevation, and surcharge requirements. When applied correctly, these two design approaches, in theory, should lead the designer to the same result with little discrepancy, as they do with steel structure design. However, the use of the current AASHTO LRFD method for various geostructural retaining wall designs yields contradictory results that suggest existing retaining walls that have been successfully designed and constructed are unstable. Fundamentally, LRFD should be built on reliability-based calibrations; the successful past performance of existing retaining structures designed using ASD suggests that the LRFD approach requires considerable modification. The authors of this paper recommend that the current LRFD load factors be reviewed and revised based on more comprehensive wall performance data and wall type such that the difference between retaining structures designed using LRFD and those designed using ASD is eliminated.

From the theories of flow and fracture it is shown that the difference in reciprocals of the transition temperatures (OK) is a quantitative measure of temper ernbrittlement. Experimental data are given which support this conclusion. STUDIES of temper embrittlement have been made with various viewpoints; some involved a study of the kinetics of the reaction,',2'" others were concerned with changes in the mechanical properties," . and still others investigated the structural differences between the embrittled and unembrittled states by means of the microscope," -ray ,' measurements of electrode potential," and electrical resistivity." In all these studies, the difference in impact properties was the criterion for distinguishing between the embrittled and unembrittled states. By common agreement the difference in transition temperatures is now taken as a measure of the degree of embrittlement, and this measure is used as the quantitative measure upon which studies of the phenomenon are based. Vidal and Jolivet"' suggested that the degree of embrittlement was the same whether measured by impact or by a slow bend test. Their conclusion was based on tests at constant temperature. Jaffe and Buffum" using the impact and slow bend test showed that, for a given degree of embrittlement, the difference in transition temperatures varied with the method of testing. Hultgren and Chang" showed that the difference in transition temperature produced by the V-notched Charpy impact test was not the same as the value produced by the keyhole-notched impact test. This is a very fundamental point because there can be no true measure of temper embrittlement unless it is invariant with respect to the test method. Theory The purpose of this analysis is to show how the transition temperature depends on the stress distribution and the state of the material. The criterion for fracture may be stated as follws: where iF is some function of the principle stresses and F is a critical condition depending on the state of the metal. Similarly yielding occurs when Where is another function of the prin-ciple stresses and Y is a critical value depending on the state of the material. There is some controversy as to the exact form of the function f,.(u,, u,, us) but most experimental data give the following criterion:= where 8, and 6, = 21 or 0. Neste trabalho é abordado o problema das múltiplas mochilas para modelar a necessidade industrial metalúrgica de alocação de bobinas de aço em um forno de recozimento em caixa. Condições especiais de processo, exigem priorização das bobinas mais antigas do estoque para garantir requisitos de qualidade. Além do mais, algumas limitações físicas e exigências de qualidade devem ser respeitadas, tais como, a obrigatoriedade de agrupamento de bobinas de mesma qualidade e limites físicos de altura e peso. Assim, uma formulação matemática é proposta para resolver este problema, cuja função objetivo visa maximizar o peso total da carga ocupada pelas bobinas de mesmas características e priorizar as bobinas mais antigas em estoque. Os resultados computacionais mostram que a aplicação da técnica do modelo de programação linear otimiza a formação de cargas gerando resultados reais de processo.

O envelhecimento gradual das Baterias de Coque é um fato inevitável, sendo importante monitorar as condições dos fornos e das estruturas periféricas para maximizar sua vida útil. A Paul Wurth desenvolveu uma metodologia de diagnose que avalia as condições dos elementos principais que compõem as plantas de Coqueria, dentre elas: estrutura da alvenaria refratária, estruturas e componentes metálicos, análise do controle térmico e regime de pressões, conjunto das máquinas móveis. Através de inspeções visuais e coleta de informações de processo e rotina adotada pela equipe de preservação da planta de Coqueria, são elaborados procedimentos e recomendações que visam à extensão da vida útil do equipamento. A Diagnose é uma técnica que auxilia as equipes de Coqueria a entenderem em que situação o equipamento se encontra e contribui com as melhores práticas adotadas no mercado para o prolongamento da vida útil. Ela deve ser repetida com frequência de modo a atualizar a situação da Bateria de Coque, verificar o efeito das ações tomadas pela equipe de preservação e propor novas recomendações. A Diagnose ainda permite identificar a idade real de desgaste das estruturas da Bateria em comparação com sua idade cronológica, permitindo que as usinas planejem investimentos de maior porte.

THE Round Table. on Qualities of Pig Iron, under the auspices of the Joint Committee on Qualities of Pig Iron, which is made up of members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the American Foundrymen's Association, the American Society for Testing Materials, the Gray Iron Institute, and the. Malleable Iron Institute, was held at the Palmer House, Chicago, Ill., on Oct. 1, 1935. PROCEEDINGS R. H. SWEETSER,* New York, N. Y.-Seven years ago last June we had a round table on qualities of pig iron1, and at that time the foundrymen were out with their battle-axes for the blast-furnace men, and the open-hearth men were doing the same thing. After that meeting there was really a determined effort to find out about the qualities of pig iron, and great progress has been made all along the line. This afternoon we want to have a frank discussion of the qualities of pig iron, whether it is the molten pig iron going into the steel plant, or cold pigs going to the different foundries. We ought to hear something from Dr. J. T. MacKenzie, who is chairman of the Joint Committee, and from Mr. R. E. Kennedy, the tech-nical secretary. J. T. MACKENZIE, t Birmingham, Ala.-As a result of that meeting in Chicago, there was considerable agitation in the Foundrymen's Association to develop a set of tests for pig iron. One of the difficulties was that nobody talked the same language on shrinkage, draws, live iron, dead iron, and so forth, which were the main com-plaints against pig iron. By request of a committee of the Foundrymen's Association, the Bureau of Standards ran a comprehensive set of tests that did develop the prin-ciples governing the optical pyrometer as applied to cast iron and pig iron. Then the Bureau went on further with the fluidity test, and developed a method for the absolute changes of volume at the freezing point.

Five or six alloys each in the systems Ni-C.v, Ni-Mo, and NL-W, spaced to cover the single phase areas as well as a part of the adjacent two-phase field, were prepared as uacuum-melted alloys. Tensile tests at room temperature and stress rupture tests at 1200° and 1500°F we.ve run for time periods to give fracture in 0.1 to 500 hr. Observations mere made of solid-solution and second-phase strengthening or uleakening, coupled with studies of ductility and the role of structure on the noted behavior patterns. THE development of stable creep-resistant alloys while broad and systematic is also highly empirical. A number of simple rules have been suggestedL-" but these are based on scant data. Whereas rules for low-temperature alloy strengthening can be applied with some success in more simple systems, the extension to behavior at high temperatures (greater than about 0.4 of the absolute melting temperature) is very poorly understood and has encountered important exceptions and deviations in terms of atom size or valency effects. In particular, the occurrence of both solid-solution weakening4,5 and second-phase weakening2 at high temperatures is of interest. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Nickel was chosen as the base material because of its important role in current high-temperature alloy applications, because of its freedom from a phase transformation, and because of wide solubilities for many elements of interest. The selected alloys were single- and two-phase structures in the Ni-Cr,6 Ni-Mo,7 and Ni-w 8 systems. The alloys were vacuum melted and cast, utilizing high-purity raw materials, in the form of 15 lb ingots. They were readily forged into 1/2-in. bar stock (except the two highest chromium alloys). The alloy compositions are shown in Table I. Typical impurity values are: Carbon: Max 0.03 pct (except for 30 and 35 pct Cr alloys which had 0.07) Nitrogen: Max 0.005 pct (except for two of the Cr alloys which had 0.05) Sulfur: Max 0.004 pct Silicon: Max 0.05 pct Each alloy was solution treated (air quenched) to produce comparable grain size. The two-phase alloys were then overaged in an effort to produce a stable structure for testing at 1200° and 1500°F, The results are summarized in Table 11. Following the heat treatments outlined in Table 11, the bars were machined to a gage section of 1.25-in. long by 0.250-in. diam. In addition to room-temperature tensile tests, stress-rupture tests were run at 1200" and 1500°F for time periods from 0.1 to about 500 hr. RESULTS Room-Temperature Mechanical Properties—The ultimate tensile strength, total elongation, and reduction of area values for all the alloys are plotted vs atomic percent of the solute element in Fig. 1. It can be seen that for the same amount of solute element the ultimate tensile strength increases in the order chromium, molybdenum, tungsten. Elongation increases (reduction of area decreases) with increasing amounts of solute for all the solid solution alloys, the values ranging from 50 to 70 pct. "Specularite ores have poor hydrophilicity and ballability as well as inferior high-temperature reactivity, which restrict the large-scale application of them in the pelletizing and sintering production. Modified humic acid (MHA) organic binders are firstly used for pellet preparation from specularite in this paper. The results show that the drop strength of green pellets is 3.7 times/0.5m and compression strength is 12.5 N/P by using 1.0 wt% MHA as binder. Under the optimal experimental conditions of preheating temperature 980 °C, preheating time 12 min, roasting temperature 1280 °C and roasting time 10 min, the preheated pellets have the compression strength more than 400 N/P, and that of roasted pellets is 2747 N/P. The strength of finished pellets meets the requirements of blast furnace iron-making. MHA is a kind of more effective organic binder for specularite pellets compared with the inorganic bentonite.IntroductionAcid Pellets have advantages of good strength, uniformity particle size, high iron grade and good reducibility, which can be used as high-quality burdens for blast furnaces [1]. With fast development of Chinese iron and steel industry domestic magnetite concentrates with high grade of iron and good firing performances become shortage.Imported specularite ores have advantages of low price and high grade of iron (generally above 67 wt%), so the application of them in pellets is an effective way for sustainable development of pellet industry in China. However, the specularites have not been utilized in pelletizing and sintering at present because of the poor ballability and high-temperature reactivity [2, 3]. Most of the pellet plants use bentonite as binders, the amount of which is about 2~3 wt%. The pellet production practice shows that 90 wt% bentonite is still residual in finished pellets and reduces the iron grade [3]. Developing a new organic binder instead of bentonite is very important to the high-quality pellet production. On one hand, the consumption of bentonite is obviously reduced, resulting in decreasing the ironmaking coke ratio and slag discharge; On the other hand, the iron grade of finished pellets are improved, which brings the benefit for the ironmaking production."

In Expeditions 22 and 26 of China Ocean Survey (COS), Chinese and Russian scientists have Carried out a lot of work to search for hydrothermal sulfide in Southern Mid-Atlantic ridge (SMAR) 19°S, but come back empty-handed at last. The sulfide formation is closely related with the water-rock reactions which are controlled by the heat source. Melt inclusions are considered to have a unique compositions in melt to reflect the deep magma processes. Fortunately, we have found a large number of plagioclase hosted melt inclusions in SMAR19°S MORB. We have done experiments by re-homogenization and re-crystallization of these melt inclusions. During the re-homogenization experiments, the forming and melting processes of the olivine crystal inside the melt inclusions indicate that the homogeneous temperature of melt inclusions is 1190-1200??. During the recrystallization experiments, the different mineral phase assemblages show H2O inside the melt inclusions has hardly ever been loss, in addition Cr element and H2O molecule in SMAR19°S magma are heterogeneity at the time of melt inclusions trapping, and then the re-crystallization experiments provide a method to prove the microheterogeneity of basaltic magma system. Combining with the bulk rock data, this study shows that the melt inclusions are formed at a low-temperature and high-pressure condition. Eventually, this paper speculates that a low temperature heat source generated by a lower mantle potential temperature or/and a thick lithosphere indicated by the melt inclusions that not experienced the H2O loss process are beneath the SMAR19°S. The low temperature heat source transmits its heat to lithosphere through the cooling thermal boundary layer (CTBL), and the thick lithosphere can sufficiently absorb and consume the heat. Under the interaction between the heat source and lithosphere, the residue heat at the infiltration depth of sea water might have been no ability to satisfy the water-rock reactions temperature, therefore, the water-rock reaction should hardly ever appear, so the theoretical reaction zone would not exist beneath the SMAR19°S. Eventually, the interaction between thick lithosphere and the low-temperature heat source should be the dominant factor that makes SMAR19°S area have no condition to form the seafloor sulfide. However, this paper is based on melt inclusions only, in fact, melt inclusions are potential to have melt compositions produced by mineral dissolution, reaction and assimilation, and the volumes of melt inclusions are exceedingly small compared to the overall size of the magmatic systems, therefore, the extrapolation across many orders of magnitude is implicit when applying petrologic information obtained from inclusions to entire magmatic systems. Therefore, there should have other more research to verify the reliability of this conclusion.

Neste trabalho, foram sintetizados e caracterizados nanofios de prata que posteriormente foram usados para produção de uma tinta condutora cuja, caracterização elétrica foi medida através de valores de tensão versus corrente. A primeira fase do trabalho consiste na obtenção dos nanofios pelo método poliol. Nesta fase, fez-se uma análise da estrutura dos fios, com o objetivo de verificar a uniformidade (forma e tamanho). Para estudos da estrutura utilizou-se a microscopia ótica (MO) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Também utilizou-se a espectroscopia de Ultravioleta-Visível (Uv-Vis) para identificação dos nanofios no produto obtido. A segunda fase, consiste no desenvolvimento da tinta condutora, onde nanofios foram redispersados em uma mistura de solventes e CTAB em banho de ultrassom, para obtenção de valores de tensão superficial e viscosidade. Por fim, medidas de corrente contínua da tinta, permitiram a construção da curva tensão versus corrente, da qual se obteve o valor da resistência elétrica. Através da curva foi possível comprovar o caráter condutor da tinta e pela linearidade da curva, verificou-se que a tinta produzida é considerada um material ôhmico.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report evaluates the load supporting characteristics of grout columns used as point supports for mine subsidence abatement. The cone-shaped columns were constructed with sodium silicate and cementitious grout in both wet and dry environments. The scope of work included the testing of seven full-scale grout columns in the USBM's Mine Roof Simulator from which the load-deformation and failure characteristics were determined. The performances of grout columns are analyzed with respect to (1) the amount of roof contact established during column construction, (2) shape effects produced by the truncated cone geometry, (3) size effects in reference to grout strength and full-scale column capacity, (4) the effect of wet environments on grout strength, (5) the effect of the sodium silicate on the grout strength and full-scale column behavior, and (6) the stiffness of the grout column. Limited tests were also conducted on cylindrical columns constructed in fabric bags. Recommendations for point support construction using sodium silicate technology and the need for additional research to develop improved containment devices for column construction are addressed in the report.
