A petrographic study was made of the type and sources of mineral contamination occurring on phosphate rock products from Florida. Emphasis was placed on contaminants in the screened rock (+1 mm) since this portion of the product undergoes no physical beneficiation except for scrubbing to remove slimes. Since iron and aluminum con- tent of the finished product affect the salability, special emphasis was placed on identifying types and sources of these contaminants and relating chemical composition to visual characteristics. Wavellite derived from the overburden was the major aluminum contaminant with some aluminum being included as secondary clayballs. Iron occurred as phosphates in the overburden, and as colloidal oxides included in the phosphate pebbles. Chert and limestone contamination were derived from the Hawthorne formation underlying the phosphate matrix.

O emprego das ligas NiTi proporcionou a fabricação de instrumentos endodônticos com diferentes desenhos de lâminas cortantes. Este estudo investigou a relação entre as características geométricas destes instrumentos e a força apical necessária para inseri-los em canais artificiais em blocos de acrílico. A força apical foi registrada através de um dispositivo de bancada de testes. Dez instrumentos de cada tipo ES, Mtwo, ProFile GT, ProFile GTX, K3, RaCe e PTU F1 foram testados a uma velocidade de 300 rpm e um torque de 5 Ncm com um movimento vertical de 17 mm de comprimento. Os dados foram comparados por análise de variância (a = 0,05). Avaliação geométrica e dimensional mostrou que o instrumento K3 tem a maior área de seção transversal, seguido por PTU F1 e GT. Os ângulos helicoidais menores de RaCe, ES e GTX podem ter contribuído para os baixos valores de força apical encontrados. Maiores valores de força apical foram determinados nos instrumentos GT, K3 e PTU F1 em relação à RaCe, ES e GTX. Foi observado que a força apical exercida durante o preparo do canal está diretamente relacionada à área de seção transversal e aos valores dos ângulos helicoidais dos instrumentos.

As fases microestruturais formadas em pelotas de minério de ferro queimadas relacionam-se às características mineralógicas do pellet feed utilizado e determinam propriedades como resistência física e comportamento metalúrgico do material. O presente trabalho objetiva detectar e quantificar fases microestruturais formadas em pelotas submetidas a diferentes níveis de sinterização, bem como sua relação com a resistência à compressão do aglomerado. Para isto foram interrompidas queimas em Pot Grate, gerando amostras de pelotas queimadas contendo fases características de diferentes temperaturas. Pelotas cruas foram submetidas à análise termogravimétrica para avaliação da perda de água dispersa entre os grãos do minério e da água combinada com o ferro em forma de partículas hidratadas.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o comportamento mecânico sob flexão de um instrumento endodôntico constituído de Ni-Ti M-Wire e comparar suas respostas com aquelas obtidas de um instrumento de Ni-Ti superelástico convencional com a mesma geometria, utilizando-se simulação por elementos finitos. Um instrumento ProTaper Universal F1 foi selecionado para este estudo. O modelo geométrico para a simulação numérica foi gerado através de micro-tomografia computadorizada e os dados para os modelos constitutivos foram obtidos por meio de ensaios de tração realizados em laboratório. A simulação numérica foi realizada em ABAQUS, com condições de contorno baseadas na especificação ISO 3630-1. Os resultados mostram que instrumentos de Ni-Ti M-Wire apresentam maior flexibilidade e menores valores de tensão quando submetidos à flexão, o que indica que estes instrumentos são mais resistentes à fadiga por flexão.

Os revestimentos protetores, além de constituírem uma importante forma de prevenção à corrosão metálica, principalmente a atmosférica pode melhorar consideravelmente as propriedades físico-químicas. A eletrodeposição representa um método alternativo para revestimentos de superfície metálica e tem a finalidade de inibir a corrosão, que ocorre na superfície do metal sob a influência do meio ambiente. A liga de Co-W tem gerado considerável interesse devido a sua resistência ao desgaste e a corrosão. No processo de eletrodeposição do tungstênio não podem ser reduzidos completamente ao estado de valência zero em meio aquoso, mas é possível depositá-los na presença dos elementos do grupo do ferro. O presente trabalho propõe avaliar a influência do agente complexante tartarato de sódio no processo de obtenção da liga Co-W. Como ferramenta de otimização foi utilizado à metodologia de superfície de resposta. As medidas eletroquímicas de corrosão foram executadas em uma célula convencional de três eletrodos. Foram utilizadas as mediadas de polarização potenciodinâmicos linear. Foi avaliada a composição química das ligas pelo EDX e a morfologia da superfície com o MEV. O melhor resultado de eletrodeposição para a liga Co-W foi obtido com concentrações sulfato de cobalto 0.2 M, tartarato de sódio 0.3 M e tungstato de sódio 0.05 M e apresentou morfologia nodular com conteúdos de tungstênio de 38% e cobalto de 62% e uma boa resistência a corrosão.

This paper discusses the actual recovery and installation of a longwall in a bituminous coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. The coal bed mined is in the Lower Freeport seam which averages 42 inches (1.07m) in height locally. Drainage from the mine is approximately 3.5 million gallons of water per day (13.25 million liters per day). This water deteriorates the mines predominately fire clay bottom making it extremely difficult to move equipment. Support removal is accomplished by pulling the 6 ton (5443 kg) shields out under their own hydraulic power and transporting them by track over four miles (6437m) co the next longwall panel. This paper also discusses the changes that will be made to aid in the succeeding longwall recoveries and installations.

As propriedades mecânicas e custo-benefício dos ADIs (ferros fundidos nodulares austemperados) tem motivado diversas pesquisas acadêmicas com o intuito de compreender a influência da sua microestrutura em suas propriedades. Buscando consolidar os resultados de estudos anteriores, no presente trabalho foram analisados os efeitos das características (tamanho e posição) dos nódulos de grafita na propagação de trinca submetida a um dado carregamento, utilizando o método dos elementos finitos (MEF) associado à técnica de re-meshing para propagação de trinca, com incremento de comprimento de trinca fixo, tendo como base de estudo dois tipos distintos de ADI. Dentre as principais conclusões, foi observado que nódulos de maior diâmetro apresentam maior influência sobre os fatores intensidade de tensão, sendo este fator um possível motivo para a melhor resistência em fadiga do material ADI 2 (menor tamanho de nódulo) em relação ao ADI1, conforme observado em estudos experimentais anteriores.

"A new approach is proposed to perform relativistic comparisons between alternative operational risk management solutions by taking into account the impact of each operational activity on overall system performance. A specific case study, to which this new approach is applied, involves the deployment of safety systems in underground mining operations. Conflicting objectives to be satisfied are the minimization of risk to human lives and the minimization of production losses. As the focus in this case is primarily on the mitigation of risk, the approach that was applied is referred to as activity-based risk (ABR) analysis. Existing development process and risk management methods used in the South African mining environment were analysed by means of observations, a case study, technical documentation, and literature review. It was evident from this analysis that a discontinuity existed between the acquisition and operational phases in terms of the management of safety risk in the acquisition of electronic safety equipment when viewed from a full lifecycle perspective. This discontinuity could be addressed by defining a risk perspective in the system development phase by employing ABR in the preliminary design phase of a system’s engineering life-cycle. The focus of the ABR system development process is to find the functional definition and configuration of safety equipment that addresses both safety and productivity when taking into account human performance variability. In doing so, a balance between productivity and safety is found in a relativistic sense. IntroductionIn any system life-cycle, two major phases exist, namely system acquisition and operation (including maintenance). A distinction is made between acquisition and procurement, where acquisition includes system development and integration as specific engineering activities. In the development phase of a new system, conceptual design, preliminary design, and detail design phases follow in this order to define a complete system, after which the system is put into production and implemented in an operational environment—these activities chronologically define system acquisition in the context of this paper. It is not uncommon that differences exist between the risk management perspective during acquisition of a system and risk management perspective during operation, where nontechnical aspects are often ignored during acquisition, but are then encountered and found to be problematic during operation (Leveson, 2012). These differences also exist in the mining industry."

A escória de aciaria LD é um coproduto abudantemente gerado através da metalurgia primária e secundária, sendo que após seu resfriamento e beneficiamento pode ser aplicado em diversos setores, mas que necessita ser submetido a processo de envelhecimento para minimização da expansão. Em geral, no Brasil, o Método PTM-130/78 é o mais utilizado para avaliar o potencial de expansão, entretanto o método leva 14 dias para obtenção dos resultados. Por meio de uma cooperação técnico-econômica entre a CSN e a EEL-USP, o método de expansão foi correlacionado com as fases identificadas e quantificadas por Difratometria de Raios-X e Método de Rietveld, respectivamente, além de compreender o mecanismo de expansão. Análises de regressão múltipla permitiram ajustar modelos matemáticos com 97,0% de ajuste e uma redução no tempo de ensaio de 14 dias (336 horas) para 7 horas.

Introduction When considering power in Alberta, there automatically come to mind ideas of either hydro or thermal generation, leaving in one's thought an uncertainty as to which one would propose. There is frequently an obvious source of power in some locations on our fastflowing rivers, the major possibilities being described in the report on Surface Water Supply and Water Power of Alberta issued by the Alberta Government in 1948, but it must be realised when reading that report that the sites so described will require extensive geological and other surveys before they can be exploited, and account must be taken also of the transmission distances involved in each instance. From a conservation point of view, where water power can be economically developed and power transmitted to the load centres, this should be done, and our thermal resources should be husbanded for our coming generations, especially if our water resources are falling owing to glacial shrinkage.

Chemical conditions for flotation and nonflotation of cassiterite and fluorite with oleic acid as collector and with alizarin dyes as modifying agents were studied by means of small-scale, vacuum-flotation tests. Artificial cassiterite was prepared for these tests by high-temperature methods, especially by crystallization from borax melts.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard in underground mines. It generally occurs in the submicron range, and is often present in the mine atmosphere with significant concentrations of dust particles that tend to occur in the supramicron range. Since dust can interfere with analytical methods to measure DPM, it is often removed from a sample stream using impactor-type size selector (diesel particulate matter impactor, DPMI). Because the DPMI physically removes oversized particles from the stream, its performance may be gradually reduced with aging. Sharp-cut cyclones (SCCs) represent an alternative size selector for DPM sampling applications, with a major advantage being that, by design, they should not be susceptible to rapid aging. This paper presents results of a field study designed to compare the performance of aged versus new/clean DPMIs and SCCs in an underground mine. DPMI aging resulted in clogging of the device, and eventually a reduction of its effective particle cut size – though, when sample flow rate was maintained, DPM sample mass collection was not affected until significant aging had occurred. Under the conditions present for this study, effects of SCC aging were observed to be minimal by the end of the study period. INTRODUCTION Submicron particles are increasingly recognized as significant respiratory health hazards (Cantrell and Watts, 1997; Kenny, et al., 2000; Ristovski, et al., 2012). Diesel particulate matter (DPM) represents a major source of submicron particles in both public and occupational environments (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). Due to their work around large equipment in confined spaces, underground miners have some of the highest exposures to DPM (EPA, 2002; Grau et al., 2004). DPM largely consists of solid elemental carbon (EC), commonly known as “soot”, and organic carbon (OC) that may be sorbed to EC particles (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). EC and OC can be measured by thermal-optical methods such as the NIOSH 5040 Standard Method (Birch, 2016), and their sum is referred to as total carbon (TC). While the complex nature of DPM does not allow for its direct measurement, both TC and EC have been accepted as suitable surrogates for monitoring occupational exposures to DPM (Noll et al., 2007 and Birch, 2016)."

The present work aims to describe the changes made in the operational procedure of the reheating shell furnace, of the hot-rolling of seamless tubes line at Barreiro Plant of VSB, during non-production periods, focusing on reducing natural gas consumption. According to the previous procedure, the furnace was kept at 750°C on these periods, using the main burners. With the new procedure, the furnace is naturally cooled, maintaining only the auxiliary burners with a pilot light turned on, without worrying about the conservation of temperature. Subsequently, the furnace is heated with a rate of 150 ºC/h until it reaches the setpoint temperature of production. This procedure change was successful and didn’t cause operational and security problems. The minimum stoppage time needed for the natural cooling to be economically favorable is 6 hours and 30 minutes. The new procedure reduced the natural gas consumption in 4.500 Nm³, considering 24 hours of stoppage, achieving an estimated annual economy on the thermal energy costs of R$440.000,00 in 2019.

Os aços carbono são materiais metálicos muito importantes na fabricação de peças para a indústria metal-mecânica. Parafusos, hastes, eixos, pistões, engrenagens são fabricados a partir desse tipo de aço, mais especificamente do aço SAE1040. O objetivo desse trabalho foi de avaliar a influência da presença de 0,2% em massa de cromo nas propriedades mecânicas e metalúrgicas de um aço com 0,4% em massa de carbono. A liga padrão SAE1040 e esta liga modificada com cromo foram submetidas a tratamentos térmicos de normalização, recozimento, têmpera e revenimento, e comparadas às durezas e microdurezas das diferentes amostras entre si. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram que a adição de cromo é um método eficiente quando se deseja aumentar a resistência de um material. Observou-se que os valores de dureza e microdureza para o aço com a adição de cromo apresentaram-se maiores em relação ao aço padrão, como consequência das microestruturas obtidas, principalmente após têmpera e revenimento. A adição de 0,2% em massa de cromo no aço carbono influiu na melhora das propriedades mecânicas do aço tornando-o mais interessante na fabricação de peças para a indústria metal-mecânica.

Mine projects are complex opportunities that demand a constant assessment of uncertainty, ie risk and upside potential. This is because the value of a mine project is typically influenced by many underlying economic and physical uncertainties, such as metal/mineral prices, metal/mineral grades, costs, schedules, quantities, and environmental issues, amongst others, which are not known with much certainty at the beginning of the project. But, is uncertainty an enemy or an ally of the mine planner/analyst? To answer this question, this paper first assesses and elaborates upon the general concept of uncertainty. It then looks at the different sources of uncertainty in a mining project, such as the orebody, costs and product price uncertainties, and their effect on the final project value. Next, a general?review?of current mine evaluation techniques highlighting their limitations when dealing with uncertainty is made. Finally, an extended evaluation and risk management framework that addresses the existing uncertainty in the (greenfield/brownfield) mine evaluation process is proposed. One important characteristic of this framework is that it uses and manages uncertainty in order to generate additional value to the project; this is done through operational and managerial flexibility, which allow mine planners to minimise/maximise project risk/upside-potential giving a more realistic estimate of the projectÆs market value - this is shown in practical and simple examples occurring at different stages of a mine project, such as exploration and operation. Large variations in flotation characteristics of minerals have been observed in winter and summer in plant practices as a result of changes in pulp temperature. Variations in temperature may affect the quality for pulp and related process water through changes in dissociation of different chemical species within the pulp, as well as changing in gas and metal hydroxide solubility, reagent adsorption and its stability on mineral surfaces, water/pulp viscosity, etc. All of these affect the flotation characteristics of specific mineral to some degree or another. It has been observed in Cu-Pb-Zn and/or Pb-Zn sulfides flotation that sphalerite (ZnS) flotation is strongly affected by changes in pulp temperature. Plant practices have shown that at the both low, e.g., T <10-12°C, and high, e.g., T > 60°C, the recovery for copper activated sphalerite is dramatically dropped. Within this paper the effect of pulp temperature on flotation characteristics of sphalerite is brought into considerations and laboratory flotation tests were conducted in conjunction with surface and solution chemistry analysis to understand the effect of temperature on sphalerite recovery. The effect of temperature seems to be complex since the temperature affects both the physical (hydrodynamics) and chemical phenomena in the flotation cell. In fact all sub-processes in flotation, i.e., collision, attachment and detachment, are affected by changing in temperature. Experimental results indicating that at alkaline pH values, e.g., 8.5 to 10.5, the recovery for copper-activated sphalerite is dramatically reduced when temperature is below 10-12°C, which is in agreement with plant practice at Boliden?s Garpenberg plant in Sweden. However, results from other studies indicated that the zinc recovery is also considerably decreased at high pulp temperatures, i.e., 62°C and above.

This Bureau of Mines study examines the acoustic vibrational spectra of rock slabs in the range of 0 to 5,000 Hz. The power spectra of so-called drummy rocks were found to be diagnostically enhanced in the range of 200 to 1,000 Hz. Comparison of the power in this band with that in a band from 3,000 to 3,500 Hz provides a quantitative measure of rock stability. A prototype field instrument was designed, constructed, and field-tested. This battery-powered instrument computes the power contained in the two frequency bands mentioned, compares the magnitude of these two quantities, and displays a number that is related to the detachment of the block tested. Field tests show that this instrument is capable of giving reliable measurements of block stability under conditions of noise and dust that would seriously degrade the accuracy of normal sounding techniques.

Some attempts were made to recover uranium from aqueous systems by using various biosubstances including microbial biomass. Of hundreds species of microorganisms tested, extremely high uranium absorbing ability was found in Pseudomonas stutzeri, Neurospora sitophila, Streptomyces albus and Streptomyces viridochromogenes. In parallel to this research, various kinds of biomass and commercially available crude drugs were screened to measure their abilities to adsorb uranium. Of these biosubstances tested, high uranium adsorbing ability was observed in chestnut skin, Comi fructus, Geranii herba and Chaenomelis fructus. From these results it may be considered that the uranium adsorbing ability of these biosubstances is due to the following; the uranyl ion is co-ordinated by the polyphenolic compounds such as tannin existing in the biosubstances. Along with these fundamental researches, we have developed a new adsorbent, the immobilised persimmon tannin (kakishibu tannin), for uranium and thorium. This adsorbent can accumulate 1.71 g of uranium per gram of the adsorbent (14 mEq/g), and the uranium adsorbing capacity of this adsorbent exceeds by several times that of commercially available chelating resins (2 - 3 mEq/g). We attempted to recover uranium from uranium refining waste water by using the immobilised persimmon tannin. As a result, the immobilised persimmon tannin can recover trace amounts of uranium from uranium refining waste water containing 10 - 15 ppb uranium with high efficiency. Almost all of the uranium adsorbed onto the adsorbent can be desorbed by washing with 0.05 - 0.1 M HCl or H2SO4. Thus, the immobilised persimmon tannin can be used repeatedly in the adsorption-desorption Cycle.

Management of historic tailings is a major challenge facing the mining industry and its regulators. However, through improved mineralogical and chemical characterisation of such materials the opportunity to develop better rehabilitation strategies arises. Microanalytical techniques including microscopy, mineral liberation analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allow for improved tailings characterisation – but the challenge posed by these techniques is how to use them effectively. Additionally, data sets collected by such techniques must be properly integrated, only then can they assist in the identification of the most appropriate rehabilitation strategies. A study conducted at the Old Tailings Dam (OTD) located at the Savage River Mine, Tasmania allowed for the integrated use of several microanalytical techniques to help evaluate the benefits of a shallow water cover as a potential rehabilitation strategy. Samples (n = 144) from 14 trenches and 11 boring cores (2 m maximum depth) were collected across the OTD. These were subjected to routine acid-base accounting, with a subset subjected to detailed mineralogy using a modified sulfide alteration index (SAI), X-ray diffractometry and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). In addition, representative samples (n = 6) from across the OTD were subjected to laser-ablation ICPMS to characterise the pyrite chemistry. Our results showed that tailings in the northern area submerged under a natural water cover were relatively unoxidised from approximately 1 m depth, with SAI values of 1 to 2. Tailings from the subaerial southern portion were extensively oxidised to approximately 35 cm depth (SAI = maximum 5.8), with fresher materials observed underneath (SAI = 5 to 5.8). Pyrite from across the OTD is enriched in Co, Cu and Ni. Through the integrated application of microanalytical tools, we determined that establishing a water cover of at least 1.5 m depth across the OTD is a suitable rehabilitation option for this historic site.
