Rock-dusting of coal mines is a most important safety measure for preventing or limiting the propagation of explosions. The Bureau of Mines has recommended for many years that rock dust be distributed on the top, ribs, and floor of mine entries and other workings of all bituminous coal and lignite mines in sufficient quantities to maintain the incombustible content of the dust above the minimum requirements. Rock-dust barriers constitute a secondary safeguard used occasionally to complement generalized rock dusting at entrances to panels and side entries or at other locations. In general, rock dust can be applied effectively with modern rock-dusting machines. However, in thin coal beds, in certain back entries, and in some other areas, rock-dusting machines cannot be used conveniently. Furthermore, many small mines find the purchase of machines costly. In such cases, rock dust is not used at all, or else it is distributed by hand, a relatively slow and costly procedure. In recent years some coal mines have started applying rock dust with the aid of permissible explosives. This may be done in various ways. One method consists in placing a stick of explosive on the floor of a room or entry midway between the ribs and covering the stick with two bags of rock dust that are slit on top and set crosswise one above the other. The explosive is then fired, causing the rock dust to be distributed on the nearby roof, rib, and floor surfaces. The procedure is repeated at desired intervals until the entire area is rock dusted. The method is claimed to be rapid, safe, and inexpensive.

The An Shan iron ore deposit is the biggest low-grade oxidised iron deposit in China. Over the past ten years, about 120 SLon verticalring-pulsating high gradient magnetic separators units have been installed in An Shan to process oxidised iron ore. This paper describes how several plants have upgraded their old technologies to new technologies with SLon magnetic separators as the key equipment for controlling tails grades, including using reverse flotation as the key technology for iron concentrate cleaning, These plants have been modernised with beneficial results at low cost.

The objectives of this paper are: to review the current status of chloride leach processes for sulfide concentrates, to make an evaluation as to the applicability of chloride leaching for replacing pyrometallurgical processes and to comment on recent advances in construction materials. The paper does not delve in detail on process chemistry. Sufficient references are presented on each process to allow the interested researcher to obtain process chemistry details. GENERAL The fact that chloride oxidates can solubilize base metals from sulfide concentrates has been known since the 1880's. The work of Hoepfner in 1902 was particularly accurate for its time with regard to the chemistry of chloride solutions. Recent work has dealt with the understanding of chloride extraction thermodynamics by modelling the behavior of metal chloride complexes. In the last several years several excellent review articles and symposiums have been issued covering chloride chemistry (1 thru 6).

Este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar a possibilidade de obtenção de revestimento cerâmico prensado semiporoso utilizando misturas, por via seca, de argila caolinítica com fonolíto. Foram utilizados traços contendo 20% e 40% de incorporação de fonolíto em peso em relação a massa cerâmica em duas granulometrias distintas (fonolíto passado na peneira #50 e #200). Para efeito comparativo, avaliou-se uma massa cerâmica industrial proveniente do polo cerâmico de Campos dos Goytacazes e uma massa cerâmica sem incorporação de fonolíto. Foram preparados corpos de prova por prensagem uniaxial calcinados em temperaturas variando entre 1050 a 1200º C. Nas amostras queimadas, foram realizados ensaios tecnológicos para determinação da retração linear, resistência mecânica (compressão diametral) e absorção de água. Os resultados mostraram que a adição de fonolíto reduziu a absorção de água da argila. Além disso, o incremento do teor de fonolíto e a redução de sua granulometria somente foram eficientes em temperaturas elevadas. Com isso, a incorporação de fonolíto a uma argila caolinítica pode possibilitar a obtenção de revestimentos semiporosos com parâmetros melhorados. Entretanto uma ressalva dever ser feita: há necessidade de incremento da temperatura final de queima em comparação com patamares utilizados por indústrias do polo cerâmico de Campos dos Goytacazes.

At the regrind or secondary grinding stages of base metal ores, the concern about energy efficiency is usually extremely important. In general, the specific energy consumption at this stage is higher than during the primary grinding stages. In addition, a tendency of finer grinding has been observed in the new projects of metallic minerals, due to the finer mineral liberation, which leads to increasing capital and operational costs. At Vale?s new copper projects in Brazil, regrind sizes with a P80 of approximately 40 to 20 µm have been necessary. Conventional ball mills, adequate for primary grinding, usually bring about low energy efficiency with products bellow 50 µm. Vale is using the vertical mill on its copper projects ? Sossego and Salobo, in order to optimize the regrind of rougher concentrates and reduce energy consumption. This paper presents the results of industrial surveys carried out on the Vertical mill circuits of Sossego plant during its initial years of operation, and compares these results with the design criteria and laboratory regrind tests used for the mill scale up. Os modos de desgaste de um material podem sofrer transições decorrentes de alterações nas condições do tribossistema. Para o estudo e análise dos fenômenos associados às eventuais mudanças, a técnica de micro-abrasão do tipo esfera livre é reconhecidamente uma boa escolha. No presente trabalho, para o aço inoxidável austenítico AISI 316L, fez-se um estudo do comportamento da taxa de desgaste, bem como do mecanismo de desgaste em função da carga de ensaio, tipo de abrasivo (SiO2 ou SiC), dureza do material (modificada pela sua nitretação) e concentração de abrasivo. O desgaste por deslizamento predomina quando a lama abrasiva é constituída de SiO2, enquanto o rolamento passa a prevalecer com a troca do abrasivo para o SiC. Verificou-se que em nenhum dos dois casos ocorreu transição de mecanismos após variações nas condições de ensaio. Por outro lado, o coeficiente de desgaste do material aumenta com a carga de ensaio, substituição do SiO2 pelo SiC e tende a cair com a nitretação (aumento de dureza) do aço e com a concentração de abrasivo. O aumento simultâneo da carga de ensaio e da concentração de sílica na lama diminui significativamente a taxa de desgaste, encurtando o período de "running-in".

"On 9 February 2014, bushfire embers landing on exposed coal in a disused pit at the Hazelwood mine in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley ignited a coal fire that burned for 45 days. The fire was the largest and longest burning mine fire to occur in the Latrobe Valley (Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry, 2016). Two Victorian Government Boards of Inquiry have been held into the Hazelwood mine fire. The most recent, in 2015, included consideration of the regulation and implementation of rehabilitation practice at Hazelwood and the other two brown coalmines of the Latrobe Valley (Loy Yang and Yallourn; Government Gazette, 2015).The 2015 Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry commissioned Accent Environmental Pty Ltd (Accent) to undertake a review of the financial mechanisms for mine rehabilitation and closure adopted in Australia and overseas (Accent, 2015). Specifically, Accent was engaged to identify ‘any practical, sustainable, efficient and effective alternative mechanisms to ensure rehabilitation of the mines as required by the [Victorian] Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990’ in accordance with Terms of Reference 10 (c) (Government Gazette, 2015).The review by Accent included consideration of a range of financial instruments such as bank guarantees, trust funds and insurance. It considered a number of financial assurance systems in operation in Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, Canada and the United States. These systems included: full and discount financial assurance systems predefined liability proportion systems pooled fund systems the use of post-closure financial mechanisms such as trust funds (Accent, 2015).What lessons can be learnt from other jurisdictions? Currently he is president of KD Engineering and Metcon Research. He had it lucky when he went to school because there were only 44 elements in the periodic table, I understand. [laughter] Here's Joe. JOE KEANE: I'm doing this under protest. Maybe we can start the slides. Mr. Halbe gave me this topic, but I don't like it. I don't like Mr. Halbe either [laughter] because of the way he shanghaied me into this. He called me up on the phone and said this is what you're going to speak about: "Five Things I Never Want to See Again in Plant Design," and I said, "Huh!" Then I started getting stuff from SME about how to make a presentation. I have decided to change the title to "More Than Five Things I Never Want to See in Plant Design," since you can't have a completely negative speech; you have to have other topics. So we will have some other, not completely nonrelated, topics to sort of break the tension. I tried to find a joke to open with. I talked to Omar Mutati. All of his jokes were either about Bill Clinton, our beloved President, or they were too filthy to say in a mixed group. [laughter] So I decided to start this out with a profound statement. Early in 1917, it became evident, owing to existing and pending market conditions, that a substitute for crude petroleum must be found for firing the smelter furnaces. After a review of the plants then existing, it was deemed advisable to depart from their practice and to adopt the following described system of distributing pulverized coal to the furnaces. The principal advantages of the proposed system, which influenced this decision, were: (I) Equal safety; no pulverized coal is stored at the furnaces; (2) greater ease of operation, furnace fires being controlled by regulating valves in burner branches, as in gas firing; (3) better organization; all machinery, including pulverized coal feed, is under one roof, and the organization is separate from the furnace department; (4) greater cleanliness; all machinery is under vacuum; (5) greater flexibility of application, the coal and air mixture can be piped where needcd. The design of the plant is the result of the combined efforts of the local engineering staff and of the machinery manufacturers. Many new features were embodied in this design to insure greater safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of handling. After 14 months of continuous operation, the plant has proved entirely satisfactory. The building is of structural steel, covered with corrugated steel, with many windows and is painted light gray inside and out. The building floor is of concrete with ample drains to the sewer, and the building is equipped with fire and service water piping. Fig. 1 shows the east side of the building and the incline conveyor from the raw-coal bins. The plant is operated entirely by electric power. All alternating current is 550 volts, 3-phase, 60 cycles. ABSTRACT The sensitivity of sulphide minerals towards oxidation depends on the mineralogical makeup and nature of sulphide ores. This paper focuses on chalcopyrite behaviour in a nickel-copper sulphide- ore matrix that was aged in the mine-site stockpiles. Results of collectorless, collector-induced flotation and recovery by size are presented following a discussion of XPS analysis that was used to gain insight into oxidative alteration of chalcopyrite’s surface chemistry. Chalcopyrite maintains its high flotation activity despite exposure to weeks of oxidative conditions. It is concluded that chalcopyrite is quite tolerant to stockpile oxidation due to various factors related to alteration of its surface chemistry.

Domestic expenditures by the U.S. petroleum industry have exhibited distinctive shifts in emphasis over the past 20 years. From the end of World War II to 1955, expenditures for all phases of the industry expanded. Although over one-half of all expenditures were for production, the relative emphasis was changed after 1956-58 from production toward processing and marketing. The period 1967-69 marked the beginning of a return to emphasis on exploration and production. These trends in expenditure patterns are logical and rational when related to domestic and international economic conditions and to the widespread application of improved production technology. As the immense job of developing the oil resources of Alaska and other regions begins, the petroleum industry will continue to turn to external sources for working capital. Long-term debt will probably be the principal method of external financing through 1970, but a definite shift toward new common and preferred stocks will be made. Higher product prices may be sought by the petroleum industry, but the economics of crude-oil production, changes in the tax structure, and possible changes in the oil imports control program make the price structure of crude oil and crude-oil products unpredictable at the present time.

Dry coal processing is becoming increasingly favoured as a fine coal beneficiation technique. The decline in suitable good-quality coal, as well as the ongoing decrease in usable process water, makes dry beneficiation of the fine coal fraction even more crucial. Dry fine coal beneficiation is a relatively young process with most of the methods still in the developmental phase. Additionally, many of the dry processing options available are better suited for coarser (+6 mm) and easy-to-beneficiate coal. Air winnowing for fine particles has been established in both agricultural and pharmaceutical industries, which indicates that the method can be used to separate smaller particles on a density basis and therefore, may prove effective in the coal industry as well. A proof of concept study was conducted using both computer-based simulations (which do not form part of this paper) and physical experiments. The initial winnowing unit consisted of a closed box with a horizontal air stream flowing through the top section. Coal particles were injected into the air stream and displaced horizontally across a distance (x), depending on the particle size and density, thus actuating a separation based on these two parameters. For this study particle sizes of 6, 4 and 2 mm were used all with a density ranging from 1200 kg·m-3 to 2000 kg·m-3. The simulation in Star CCM+ confirmed the findings of the mathematic behavioural model and provided a virtual representation of the separation using streamlines and particle tracks. The coal tests prove that size separation can be achieved at an airflow velocity of 21 m·s-1 and the density cut-point can also be predicted by using the prediction matrices constructed as part of this study. The results show efficiency values (EPM) of 0.11 and 0.09 at density cut-points of 1400 kg·m-3 and 1500 kg·m-3 respectively. The data obtained from the study indicates that air winnowing can be used to separate fine coal particles based on both size and density. However, in order to achieve an efficient density separation, a narrow size range is required. With some improvements to the model, simulation, method and design, the separation efficiency can also be improved. The next phase of testing will include the upscaling of the process to a demonstration plant, optimising the separation unit and testing the method on different qualities of coal. The Department of Mapping and Surveying (DMS), the Australian Key Centre in Land Information Studies (AKCLIS), the Department of Industry Development (DID) and the State Government Computer Centre (SGCC) are testing a regional information network in northern Queensland. Several study sites have been chosen by different groups of participants. The members of each common-interest group share their data for the site. They can also access datasets supplied by other organisations that are not directly involved in the particular study being undertaken. The participants include state government departments, local authorities, fed- eral organisations and the private sector. The participants communicate with computer systems in Brisbane via Q-Net. Q-Net is a pilot State government tele- communications network, established by the Department of Industry Development. Q-Net uses the communications sat- ellite AUSSAT 1 as the primary instrument of data transfer. The Q-Net network is a star system, with a Master Earth Station in Brisbane acting as a hub for radial earth stations, located throughout Queensland.

The production of synthetic rutile—a common starting material for most titanium production processes—from iron-rich titanium minerals such as pseudorutile and ilmenite is described. The process for “upgrading” the mineral to synthetic rutile is by carbothermal reduction of the mineral while immersed in a molten salt at high temperature, followed by magnetic separation of the reduced iron. A variety of factors are also investigated, such as particle size of the mineral, the type of mineral, and the molten salt used. The solubility of iron(III) oxide in different molten salts is also experimentally determined.

Gold and Resource Developments NL (GRD) operates the Macraes Gold Project in East Otago in the South Island of New Zealand, treating a carbonaceous, refractory sulphidic gold ore. The ore is concentrated by flotation, then reground, followed by CIL cyanidation, to minimise loss to the preg-robbing natural carbonaceous material. As the mine has progressed there has been some variation in the preg-robbing nature of the ore, with average overall gold recovery generally in the range 70- 75 %. The Macraes Gold Project has been operating since 1990 and still has an estimated 11 year mine life, which has stimulated the continuing drive to enhance gold recovery. Testwork in 1994 showed there was no improvement in CIL gold recovery after conventional acid pressure oxidation of Macraes Gold Project flotation concentrate. Hence roasting was initially considered as the preferred option to improve gold recovery, being the only established technology to deal with both carbonaceous preg-robbing and sulphide encapsulation. However Newmont Gold Company pressure oxidation technology, as used at Twin Creeks in Nevada, has proved to be applicable to the Macraes Gold Project concentrate. Pilot scale testwork has shown that both roasting and pressure oxidation could achieve similar CIL gold recoveries on the concentrate. However, capital cost, simpler arsenic stabilisation, the ability to operate autothermally at a lower concentrate sulphur grade and simpler environmental consenting factors, has tipped the balance in favour of pressure oxidation. Overall average gold recovery is expected to improve to approximately 84% with adoption of pressure oxidation. GRD has appointed Minproc Limited as EPCM contractor to install pressure oxidation at the Macraes Gold Project, together with upgrading the existing flotation and grind circuits at a cost of NZ$ 30M (US$ 16M). Construction is 60% complete and on schedule for 1 October 1999 start up.

Block or panel caving technology is far removed from that of the top slicing and block caving of the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. The rapid mechanisation and expansion of these methods in the late twentieth century was as much a result of the change of the technology of the unit operations of development, ground support, drilling and blasting and transport as it was of the advances in geotechnical understanding and practice. The small footprint gravity and scraper block caving mines with boundary weakening, rail transport and shaft hoisting of the early to mid-twentieth century have been replaced by massive high lift panel caves using preconditioning of the ore, large load-haul-dump units, adjacent crushers and conveyors to surface. The performance of the U.S. economy in 1977 was similar to that in 1976 which, in turn, had been a considerable improvement over 1974-75. In 1977 real gross national product (GNP) showed a similar, but some-what slower, growth pattern compared with 1976. Real GNP increased sharply in the first quarter of the year followed by smaller increases for the remaining three quarters. With only two exceptions, the monthly unemployment rate declined or remained steady throughout 1977, falling to a low for the year in December. The inflation rate in 1977 was slightly higher than in 1976, but the rate still remained far below that of 1974-75. Total U.S. output as measured by GNP in current dollars rose 10.8% in 1977. Real GNP in constant 1972 dollars increased 4.9%, and inflation, as measured by the implicit price deflator, rose 5.6%. In real terms, gross private domestic investment for residential structures increased 19.3% in 1977, only slightly below the 22.9% rise in 1976; State and local government expenditures increased 1.1 % in 1977; and personal consumption expenditures for services rose 4.5%.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes methods to enhance the capacity, stiffness, and timber utilization of wood crib supports. Since stiffer supports minimize strata deflections that contribute to roof instability, efforts to maximize crib stiffness while maintaining stability through a wide displacement range should be a design priority. The stiffness and capacity of conventional crib designs, employing alternating layers of wood timbers that are loaded perpendicular to the grain, can be increased by increasing the interlayer contact area or by using higher strength wood. Contact area can be increased by using wider timbers or employing more timbers per layer. Concepts that provide parallel-to-the-grain timber loading will provide substantial increases in crib stiffness and capacity. Two concepts that utilize this principle are examined: (1) an original South African design that constructs wood cribs from preformed layers (mats) of timber where short blocks are oriented vertically between horizontal slabs; and (2) a design that employs full lengths of timber placed vertically in the interior of a conventional crib structure. These designs also provide more efficient timber utilization by providing greater support capacity per volume of wood used in the crib construction.

(Pittsburg Meeting. March, 1010.) GENERALLY speaking, the practical study of combustion has been made mainly from the stand-point of the steam engineer. This. narrow view-point has left open a large field for scientific research on the application of combustion in other arts, where the conditions of heat-utilization are widely different from those presented in the steam-generator. The great economic importance of the boiler and the ease of measuring its performance, together with the comparative uniformity of conditions in the steam-generator, is, probably, quite largely responsible for the practical neglect of the study of the use of fuels in other arts save only on the basis of their thermal value. Yet these other arts show quite plainly that a thermal-value basis alone is Dot sufficient. For example, in burning lime, under ordinary conditions of firing, a cord of wood will do as much work as a ton of coal, though the latter affords more than twice the number of heat-units. Similar results are evidenced in burning brick, in the roasting of certain ores, in reheating billets, and in many other arts where heat is to be applied over extended areas to fragmental masses of more or less refractory materials. In these arts much is to be gained by a careful study of the application of the heating-agent in the form of the long flame, and in the production of the heat in contact with, or in direct proximity to, the object to be heated. Of necessity, in boiler-practice, combustion cannot be maintained in actual contact with, or in close proximity to, the object to be heated. Speaking in a general way, heat is imparted from burning bodies to things to be heated in two ways : directly, by radiation, and indirectly, by transfer of the sensible heat of hot gases by convection or contact; by conduction from the hot uses. "A significant area of Outotec’s business involves fluidized bed roasting. With several decades of experience, more than 300 reference plants and strong R&D capabilities, the company provides several industries with optimum processing solutions. Applications include oxidation and sulfation of sulfides found in copper, pyrite and zinc concentrates. Gold production and de-arsenifying roasting are also within this scope. This paper describes the latest furnace developments and includes novel trends. Moreover, hot and wet gas cleaning systems are examined focusing on unit operations related to the removal of components such as dust, SO2 for sulfuric acid production, fumes, halides, Hg, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides and metals.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, when defining roasting processes, it can be stated that the respective primary pyrometallurgical reaction is exothermic, of gas-solid nature and relates to a value solid product. These processes are a key focus within Outotec’s scope and include: (i) dead roasting (ii) sulfating roasting (iii) partial de-arsenifying roasting and (iv) two-stage, de-arsenifying roasting.Dead roasting involves the oxidation of a given sulfide, thus allowing for a subsequent leaching process, and has been applied to producing ZnO. Dead roasting of pyrite has also been extensively utilized with a primary goal of producing sulfuric acid. In contrast, sulfating roasting involves converting a sulfide to its sulfate, enabling a selective sulfation of components, such as Cu or Co, and their separation from ferrous components during leaching (produced sulfates are soluble). Partial roasting involves partially oxidating the metal sulfide to its oxide with the simultaneous production of gaseous As4O6, which is handled during gas cleaning. The solid product, containing hardly any As, is rich in S and can be fed to a respective smelter (e.g. in the case of Cu). Alternatively, if the production of oxide is required, a dead roasting step is added after the partial roasting step, with the overall process considered as two-stage roasting."
