Arguably, one of the most significant technological breakthroughs that had been experienced during the period when British Coal was the major coalmine operating company in the UK, the use of rockbolts as principal support in underground roadways brought with it the need to re-assess the technical knowledge, management controls and legislative frameworks associated with the support of mine workings. Following a major roof fall in a roadway supported principally using rockbolts in which fatalities occurred, the process of the design of rockbolted support and the systems and procedures that had been put in place to control its use in the UK were further reviewed. The paper discusses the outcome of these reviews, and how the incident initiated a major new interest in strata control research in the UK against the background of the fragmentation of the ownership of the mines following the sale of the former British Coal assets at the end of 1994, together with the proposed introduction of new strata control legislation in 1996.

Early in 1940 the development and sampling programmes in hand on the North and British Sections of North Broken Hill Limited were such as to necessitate the drilling of a large number of drill holes ranging up to about thirty feet in length. On the British Section, one purpose was to test the existence, width, and value of narrow lodes believed, for geological reasons, to occur in the walls of the existing workings. Another object was to definitely disprove the existence of payable shoots of ore in certain largerhodonite and quartz-garnet ("garnet sandstone") pillars which had been formerly left as unpayable.On the North Section, the main purpose of the short holes was to delineate the ore-body boundaries by drilling laterally from drives in ore, and thus enable level layout to be planned in advance of sill stoping. It was also desired to test the walls of stopes in those portions of the mine where the economic limit of mining is not rendered obvious by a clear-cut wall, but should be determined by assay. In these latter cases it was hoped to eliminate "prospecting by stoping," a procedure by which any doubts as to the existence of further good ore behind the low-grade walls were settled by continuing to stope laterally until all chance of such an occurrence was removed.LONG HOLE ROCK DRILLINGFollowing an investigation of recorded instances of similar practice elsewhere it was decided to use the rock drill for a series of trial sample holes. A 3-in. drifter was used. This was selected from those in use underground, and was given a special overhaul; had a new machine been purchased, a 4-in. type would probably have been obtained as being more suited to the work. The rods were H in. hollow round steel with a type "1" Jackrod thread. Couplings were of chrome steel, and were H in. in diameter, and 2 in. long. Jackbits (type "1" thread) in sizes from 2 in. to 4 in., with 1-in. gauge changes, gave a range of nine bit sizes. They were resharpened by hot milling, and were not milled to a definite gauge size.After sharpening, bits were sent underground without sorting into sizes, the drillers selecting the next bit with callipers. In view of the small scale of operations, it was not considered worth while to adopt special measures, such as the cold grinding of bits, which might have given a better product. Later, however, new bits were used exclusively, the idea being to accumulate enough blunt Jackbits to warrant a thorough treatment of the sharpening...

These features are determined by the manifold constructive and destructive processes of nature, and their many diverse forms and characteristicsare dependent primarily upon geologic structure. Thus it is that a close relationship exists between the rocks of a region and the topographic features of the lJountry wherein they occur. This paper presents a brief account of the plant which has been developed at Port Pirie to recover, by vacuum distillation, the greater part of the zinc content of desilverized lead. The present plant is an experimental unit, which is run in conjunction with the normal refinery practice, but can be cut out of the circuit. It will shortly be dismantled and duplicate units will be built on the sites chosen for the final plant installation.The unit described here has treated flows of 16 to 37 tons per hour of desilverized lead, to recover 90 to 95 per cent of the zinc contained in it. It is not intended here to detail all aspects of the vacuum dezincing operation, nor the developments which precededthe adoption of this design. The essential features of the present plant will be described and, where these are peculiar to the present experimental location, the intended alteration for the final plant will also be mentioned. OUTLINE OF PLANT AND PROCESSLead issues from the continuous desilverizing kettle at about 350° C. containing about 0·57 per cent Zn. It is conveyed by a tiled launder to the preheater, where it is heated to 580-620° C.Hot lead from the preheater enters the vacuum vessel via a barometric leg. From a reservoir holding about 19 tons of lead it falls by gravity in a thin film exposed to high vacuum (20-50 microns)3 and leaves the vessel via a barometric leg, entering the lead pot. The lead leaves this pot at 540-560° C., containing 0·03 to 0·06 per cent Zn, which is removed, together with residual antimony of 0.02 to 0·06 per cent, by a separate final refining process.

Multiple regression analysis was used to predict elemental concentrations of copper and nickel in soils from consideration of the concentration of these elements in vegetation in an ultrabasic complex in New Zealand. Regression equations were computed from sixteen independent variables involving concentrations of ten elements in plant ash, and various physical factors such as slope and altitude of the site, and height of the tree. One elemental and one physical variable were significant for nickel at the 90 per cent level of probability and five elemental and two physical variables were significant for copper at the same level. Use of the regression equations explained 32·5 per cent and 26·5 per cent of the variance in the respective relative accumulations (amount in plant divided by amount in soil) of copper and nickel.Predicted concentrations of copper and nickel in soils agreed more closely with the observed values in the soils than did the levels of these elements in plant ash.Although the results may specifically apply only to the test area, the principles should have universal application.

The Bulli Seam, New South Wales, comprises medium to low volatile bituminous coal, generally of coking quality. It is worked over an area embracing 300 square miles.Variations in several factors are found.1. The seam is somewhat disturbed and dissected by various structural features.2. This structure, and present topography, have resulted in depths of cover from very shallow to approaching 2,000 ft in the presently worked areas.3. Wide variations of seam thickness occur.4. Gradations of rank occur from place to place.5. Variations in seam gas content and wide variations in seam gas composition are experienced.6. Variations in coal strength occur.These factors may contribute to the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena in mining exploitation.INTRODUCTIONThe Bulli Seam, the most extensively worked seam in Australia, is the uppermost seam of the Illawarra Coal Measures, which comprise the southern portion of the Sydney Coal Basin. Generally, the rank of the seam and its assemblage of types make it ideal for the production of hard metallurgical coke. The thickness and relatively flat dips render the seam suited to mechanized bord and pillar mining, and this method is used almost without exception. At the north-eastern corner of the field, stress and gas phenomena have occurred during mining.Various data have been assembled on physical, chemical and geological conditions of the seam which may influence the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena. This material is presented in an attempt to explain the location of such phenomena to date, and to enable variations in conditions to be considered when future possibilities are being assessed.

Dentre os revestimentos galvanizados a quente, o galvannealed (GA) destaca-se por possuir uma estrutura composta por fases Fe-Zn, o que lhe confere excelente desempenho na aplicação em peças de alta solicitação. A qualidade do revestimento GA é governada principalmente pelo tratamento de galvanneling, tendo em vista seu efeito na formação dos compostos Fe-Zn. A influência desse tratamento é ainda mais pronunciada em aços com características de bake hardenability (BH), pela presença de elementos que alteram a sua reatividade. Nesse estudo, foram avaliados os efeitos das condições de galvannealing na formação do revestimento GA sobre aços BH. Para tal, ciclos de galvannealing variando-se a temperatura de aquecimento entre 530°C e 580°C foram simulados em escala de laboratório. Além dos ciclos completos, foram também realizadas interrupções do tratamento ao longo da etapa de encharque, através de resfriamentos bruscos das amostras, com o objetivo de avaliar a microestrutura do revestimento ao longo de todo o tratamento. Os resultados permitiram determinar os mecanismos de formação e crescimento dos compostos intermetálicos Fe-Zn que constituem o revestimento galvannealed, e correlacioná-los com as características do produto final, de maneira a estabelecer faixas adequadas de processamento desse material.

Flotation tests in a laboratory flotation cell at pH 8-8.5 and other sui}plementary tests were carried out on sphalerite-quartz and sphalerite-pyrite-'quartz mixtures. Depression of sphalerite resulted vvhen the addition of copper sulphate exceeded an optimum value. Evidence that this depression was due to collector deficiency because of reaction between copper sulphate and collector is presented. It was not found possible to devise a direct analytical method suitable for .plant control of reagent addition. A possible means of control using potassium cyanide and a higher pH is discussed.INTRODUCTIONAt the Rosebery mill of Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd., recovery 'of sphalerite in the zinc concentrate occasionally drops unexpectedly. Experiment in the mill and mill laboratory has suggested that one of the factors causing this may be the addition of more than an optimum amount of copper sulphate. On such occasions, an increase in the collector addition improves zinc recovery in the zinc concentrate, but only at the expense of sphalerite-pyrite selectivity.To examine the phenomenon more thoroughly, and if possible to find some means of determining the optimum addition of cepper sulphate and controlling the actual addition at this optimum, one of the authors (W. In 1990, Freeport Exploration began regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the republic of Indonesia (Fig. 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work that totaled 2.6 million hm2 (6.4 million acres). The company was subsequently awarded additional concessions that added 1 million hm2 (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments, Freeport’s current land position totals 1.9 million hm2 (4.7 million acres). Freeport began the exploration program to locate additional Grasberg deposits, the largest deposit in the Ertsberg district. But the company recognized that other types of deposits could be present in the largely unexplored area of Irian Jaya.

The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) is a regional sewer authority that serves ten communities in the Providence, Rhode Island metropolitan area. From 1992 to 1999, the NBC developed a comprehensive facilities plan to abate Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) pollution in the Upper Narragansett Bay. The plan underwent many major evolutions during this period, most notably the addition of a stakeholder?s process by which NBC demonstrated a site-specific plan to control the pollutants and meet water quality standards. The favored solution consisted of deep tunnel storage with treatment at existing wastewater facilities that had been recently upgraded. In 1999, a final plan was accepted which included two tunnels, five CSO interceptors, twelve sewer separation projects, a wetland facility, and a wastewater treatment facility upgrade. The program is to be constructed over 20 years in three sequential phases (Figure 1). Phase I of the program includes a 4,963 m (16,284 ft) long, 7.9 m (26 ft) diameter, 70.1 m (230 ft) deep storage tunnel; seven drop shafts with connecting adits; ancillary facilities; and a pump station. Construction of Phase I began in 2001 and is expected to be operational by October 2008. This paper focuses on design and construction of the Fields Point Tunnel Pump Station (FPTPS)located at the south end of the main spine tunnel. A189 Ml/day (50 MGD) pump station is required to lift CSO flows from the tunnel to the Fields Point Wastewater Treatment Facility (FPWWTF). The pumps are to be housed in a 35.6 m × 18.6 m ×20.7 m (117 ft × 61 ft × 68 ft), 91.4 m (300 ft) deep cavern excavated in a complex meta-sedimentary rock of the Rhode Island Formation, and connected to the surface by 9.7 m (32 ft) and 3.4 m (11 ft) diameter shafts. Factors which influenced selection of the size, configuration and location of facilities included the preferred arrangement of pumps, critical aspects of site geology, and estimated cost. Technical and value engineering reviews also affected the final design. Following Notice to Proceed (NTP), concerns were raised by the contractor regarding constructability and design. Additional geotechnical investigation and independent engineering review were employed to validate the design assumptions. The cavern was successfully excavated and sup-ported in rock, completed on schedule and within budget in 2005. In 1992 the NBC retained Louis Berger Group (LBG) as Program Manager (PM) for the CSO Abatement Program. LBG thereafter formed a design team including: Jacobs Engineering Group(JEG) as the designer for underground structures and near surface collection facilities; Black and Veatch(B&V) to design the pumping system and associated facilities; Haley and Aldrich (H&A) to oversee the geotechnical program; and Malcolm Pirnie to design the system-wide instrumentation and control system. Construction management, resident engineering, and inspection services were provided by the joint venture Gilbane/Jacobs Associates (G/J).

Charleston Water System?s Daniel Island Extension Tunnel, initially thought to be the simplest of the four replacement tunnels to design and build, became the most challenging after the discovery of an unexpected 30-ft thick lens of sand in the normally consistent Cooper Marl while sinking a shaft on Daniel Island. This paper will explore the challenges involved with determining the extent of the unforeseen lens of sand, the accelerated boring program, and the redesign of the vertical alignment?keeping the alignment between the sand layer and the bottom of the Cooper River. It will describe how the challenges were overcome, and how the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor were able to team together to achieve the desired results.

"High Fidelity Simulation is a name applied to the use of first principles modeling tools including Discrete Element Modeling (DEM), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Grain Breakage (DGB) to mathematically describe and study processing systems. Over the past few years, significant advances have been made in High Fidelity Simulation applications, particularly as many mineral processors have been drawn to the study and use of DEM of grinding mills for optimization purposes. This presentation provides an introduction to High Fidelity Simulation, with an emphasis on DEM. It will include insights into current applications of these tools including the optimal design (wear and throughput) of mill lining systems and media selection, the analysis and design (flow and efficiency) of the back-end of grate discharge mills. Advantages of full mill simulations versus individual sub-process simulations will be demonstrated for a SAG mill with different discharge system designs.INTRODUCTIONHigh Fidelity Simulation is providing mineral processors with the opportunity to analyze the behavior of mineral processing equipment from a fundamental or microscale point of view. In the past complex phenomena such as tumbling mill grinding had to be analyzed using black box tools such as residence time distributions for transport and classification functions for passage of particles through grates; while breakage had to be analyzed using PBM models who derived their form from theory but required direct measurement of kinetics. Today with the help of DEM, CFD and DGB these can be analyzed at a very fundamental level.The key element of DEM simulation is the application of Newton’s laws of motion to individual objects or discrete elements. Using this simulation method one can describe the position, velocity (both translational and rotational) of all objects and the transfer of momentum to other objects (Mishra and Rajamani, 1992; Cleary, 1998; Nordell et al, 2001)."

Geomechanics signifies the science and engineering of soil and rock materials and of rock masses. It is a field of professional practice and research that draws heavily on the elements of soil and rock mechanics. Geomechanics contributes to a number of disciplines: mining engineering, civil engineering, geological engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, and engineering geology (including the elements of geohydrology and geophysics). These disciplines are involved in the design and construction of such projects as mines, tunnels, foundations for structures, excavated rock slopes, dams, shafts, boreholes, oil reservoir wells, underground storage facilities for oil and gas, and hazardous waste repositories. Geomechanics allows us to improve both our environment and our quality of life. In the context of this Handbook, the scope of geomechanics is discussed mainly from the point of view of applications to mining engineering. However, the coverage of the subject mate¬rial is so comprehensive that it is relevant to other disciplines as well. Section 10 covers the field of geomechanics in a structured fashion, beginning with the fundamental principles and leading into practical applications in mining engineering. Throughout the treatment of the subject, knowledge of geologic conditions is assumed since this is discussed in other sections of the Handbook. An important feature of this section is a series of practical examples illustrating the various aspects of geomechanics. Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd., has initiated a scheme for construction of 55 flyovers in Mumbai in India. To ensure speedier completion of projects several new technologies were adopted to save time without compromising on safety and reliability. Many of the flyovers involved large diameter pile foundations carrying loads ranging from 3500kN to 1375kN. Significant time would have been lost in using conventional load testing procedure to check pile capacity apart from the difficulty in mobilizing the load and the obstruction to site movement and traffic on the adjoining roads. High Strain Dynamic Testing was introduced on the project sites in lieu of static load testing after conducting numerous co-relation studies on various project sites. A total of seven co-relation studies have been conducted till date and based on these data static testing has been replaced by dynamic testing on numerous flyovers. The paper presents the results of such studies. CAPWAP analysis was also conducted on the data to evaluate the percent skin friction and end bearing so as to improve future design parameters.

The new Paradisus Coco Beach Resort in Rio Grande (PR) is located on an old swamp area, which has been filled with relatively clean to silty sands. The swampy deposits consists of organic silts, peat and loose fine to medium sand and silty sand. The project requires the placement of 1.0 to 1.5 meters of additional fill together with the construction of light structures. The need for the fill will trigger the development of settlements in the underlaying weak and compressible stratum. Furthermore, the susceptibility of the loose sand to liquefaction during an earthquake was considered. This paper describes the soil improvement by means of vibro-replacement, the purpose of which was threefold: reduction in total and differential settlement, acceleration of settlements during the surcharge period and densification of the loose sand to reduce its liquefaction potential. The predesign is presented together with relevant construction details of the preliminary trial areas from which the final column diameter and grid spacing were derived. Instrumentation together with settlement observations during the surcharge period are presented as well and compared with the initial predictions.

TIMBER supports for large underground cavities are temporary expedients until the permanent filling can be put in. Nevertheless, timber supports are very necessary in some form. The general problem is to support the cavity in all directions withthe minimum of timber, disposed in the strongest way. The simplest way of filling an irregular space with timber sets is to form triangles.The right-angled isosceles triangle (Fig. 1) leads to the true square set, in which caps are equal to struts. The right-angled unequal-sided triangle and the scalene isosceles triangle (Fig. 2) lead to the oblong square set, where caps are longer than struts.The scalene triangle (Fig. 4) leads to the rhombic or oblique set. The equilateral triangle leads to the hexagon set (Fig. 3), in which the caps and struts are all equal. These five plane figures, the triangle, square, rectangle, rhomb and hexagon, are the only figures that will completely fill any irregular plane figure, without interstices. Hexagon sets were first suggested by the writer in 1902 to a mine manager at Broken Hill, who did not see his way to use them.

Since 80's we built the first deepwater wharf of Shenzhen chiwan port which has 3 berths of 10000 dwt, We have built 3 berths for vessels of 40000 dwt both in Shekou Port and Chiwan port. The berths for carriers of 10000 dwt in Yantian Port of Dapeng Bay are constructing now. In the five years, We built more than 20 deepwater berths of 5000 dwt to 40000 dwt. This paper will introduce how to solve the difficulties of the complex geological conditions and how to use the new fashion construction. We will reduce the period of engineering construction and get good quality and make a good beginning of rapid development of port construction in ShenZhen Special Economic Zone.

This US. Bureau of Mines report examines the roof and floor contact pressure provided by the interaction of a shield with the surrounding strata. Controlled forces were applied to an 800-ton two-leg shield in the Bureau's mine roof simulator; the distribution of forces acting on the canopy and base of the shield were measured with 24 hydraulic pressure cells. Several influential factors that affect the load distribution were investigated: (1) the magnitude of loading (leg pressure); (2) the profile of the canopy, principally the upward-sloping tip; (3) the base-lifting device; (4) horizontal load acting on the shield; and (5) compliancy of the immediate roof and floor. It was concluded that the shield does not develop full canopy or base contact without deformation of the strata. Maximum contact pressures are developed at the rear of the canopy and on the toes of the base. Less than 10 pct of the available shield capacity is developed at the canopy tip despite the design intention to ensure tip contact. Horizontal loading reduced the toe pressure acting on the base by as much as 75 pct. The base-lifting device exaggerated the inherently high toe loading, increasing the contact pressure by more than 200 pct.

This is the second in a series of articles on microcomputers and applications in the minerals industry. The first article (ME, Feb., page 129) discussed microcomputer terms and concepts. This article will discuss software for geology and mining. The third article will cover plant, administrative, and geotechnical software applications. Introduction Geology and exploration are areas where computers have a natural fit. Large volumes of data need to be tabulated, evaluated, and made into maps and reports that allow geologists and management to make a decision on a project or mine. Until recently, the programs that performed these tasks were cumbersome and not user friendly by any stretch of the imagination. Learning time to become an expert in these programs typically would be six months or more. The computers needed to run these programs are expensive mainframes. Several years ago, the use of minicomputers became popular because of their lower cost. Programs were adapted to fit these smaller machines and became friendlier. With the advent of micros, many programs. were rewritten and used the screen capability more effectively, thus providing a real advance in user interface. Programs and Price The definition of micro, mini, and mainframe is becoming blurred. For the purposes of this article, micro refers to either an eight- or 16-bit computer, costing less than $10,000 and, more typically, under $5,000. Mini refers to a 16- or 32-bit computer that typically costs more than $25,000. Mainframe refers to a 32-bit or larger computer that costs more than $250,000. There is a large gray area between micros and minis, and minis and mainframes. Technology and prices are changing so fast that the traditional definitions have become almost meaningless and price has become a better guide. With the arrival of the minicomputer, costs for hardware began to fall, but the programs have tended to remain unfriendly. In some cases, the minicomputer acted as a front end to the mainframe. Cost of both the programs and minicomputers could easily run a minimum of $70,000. A total cost of $200,000 would not have been out of line. The average geologist and company would have a great deal of difficulty justifying such a purchase. The advent of the microcomputer has changed all that. For $3,500 to $5,000, one can buy a 16-bit micro and a printer. Plotters with six pens are available for $2,000 that will produce a 280- x 430-mm (11- x17-in.) map. For several hundred dollars, software is available to act as a word processor, an economic spread sheet, or to perform ground water calculations. In fact, some programs are available for free. Some of these programs are relatively easy to learn. In addition, programs are being developed daily that are easy to use. More importantly, large programs that once ran only on mainframes are being converted

Six recent case studies were selected based on the eight main causes of mine disasters (Table 1; Quinlan, 2014) and where credible information sources, such as Royal Commission Reports, Coronial Investigations and textbooks, were available.
