Impacts to ground water from mining are being comprehensively regulated in Nevada through specific requirements for design, construction, operation, permitting and closure. This program is the nation's most comprehensive for control of activities at mining operations which have the potential to cause groundwater degradation. It encompasses virtually all types of facilities, including placer, physical separation, flotation, testing, leaching and milling. Minimum design requirements are established by regulation, and must be met by each facility. Site-specific monitoring requirements are established for each facility, and are heavily emphasized. Regulatory and technical requirements and relevant permit conditions are presented and discussed.

The anisotropy of Young's modules has been measured in a series of Cu-Zn alloys containing from 1 to 28 wt pct Zn and cold-rolled to 97.5 pct reduction in thickness. These modulus data show a transition in texture as a function of zinc content. In alloys containing 3 pct Zn or less, the texture is essentially that of copper. A transition is clearly seen to develop in 5 and 8 pct Zn alloys, and to have been completed in a 12 pct Zn alloy. Increasing the proportion of zinc to 28 pct does not produce any further changes in texture. The ease and clarity with which this texture transition can be seen in the modulus data is in great contrast with the inccertainty in the visual detertiination of the range of texture transition from a series of pole figures. It is also shown that the rolling texture of the high zinc content alloys cannot be a one-COIIIponenl texture, characterized by the (110)(112) ideal orientations, as usually assumed. A second, quite important component must also be present. Furthermore, the present data are inconsistent with matrix orientations on which the "oriented growth" hypothesis of the Formation of recrystallization textures is based. THE rolling textures of binary fcc alloy systems have generally been considered to lie between two terminal textures. One of these terminal textures is the copper type and the other is the 70:30 brass type. Alloys of intermediate solute content exhibit a texture which is said to be a transition between the two terminal textures. On the basis of efforts to correlate rolling and recrystallization textures, two concepts have been advanced in the literature on the nature of these transition textures. One school1 suggests that the addition of alloying elements, e.g., zinc, causes a gradual rotation about one of the (111) poles from the (358)( 523) ideal orientation of the copper-type rolling texture to the terminal {1 10)( 112) ideal orientation used to describe the rolling texture of 70:30 brass. This concept is depicted in Fig. 1 with the angle of rotation corresponding approximately to the zinc content and is designated here as the "rotational concept", since the ideal orientation of the transition textures varies continuously with alloy content. The other concept,' the "mixture concept", suggests that the copper-type rolling texture is a two-component texture. {358) (523) and {110)(112). The addition of alloying elements affects only quantitatively the relative amounts of these two components—a decrease in the amount of material in the {385}(523) orientation and an increase of that in the {110)(112) orientation with increasing solute content. An experimental distinction between these two concepts is essential to a better understanding of both the mechanism of formation of rolling textures and the subsequent formation of recrystailization textures in fcc metals. Because of the lack of resolution inherent in pole figures, it has not been possible to differentiate between the two concepts on the basis of this data. Both concepts, in fact, make use of the same set of pole figures but interpret them in a manner acco-rding to the view held.'" Experimental results obtained from inverse pole figures or selected-area electron diffraction3j4 simply -yield more refined pole figures but do not eliminate the ambiguity of interpretation. The operation at Phu Kham commenced design and construction in early 2006 and was commissioned in May 2008. This paper will examine and discuss the project from the inception of flow sheet development and equipment selection, equipment design and manufacture, construction, commissioning and ramp up to full production. The paper will touch on the strategies employed to achieve a short schedule and the efficient use of capital, but with the main emphasis on the grinding circuit. Various challenges during the early years of operation will be discussed including the effect of ore characteristics, including competency, on the performance of the grinding circuit. Actions to overcome these challenges and to enhance performance will also be discussed. Finally, current and future plans to improve the performance of the grinding circuit and the overall plant will be summarised.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the thermoelectric properties of yttrium selenides and tellurides from room temperature to 900° C. X-ray crystallographic data were determined for the yttrium-selenium and yttrium-tellurium compounds that were orthorhombic with a cubic substructure. The yttrium selenides and tellurides exhibited semimetallic to insulator conduction properties with figures of merit of 10-9 to 10-4 °C-1. The mono-selenide and monotelluride behavior was partially degenerate; unsatisfied bonds were the source of the large number of charge carriers. The higher stoichiometry selenide compounds were intrinsic semiconductors) but with high electrical resistivities. A critical defect or impurity ionization energy for carrier activation appeared to exist in the majority of telluride compounds. Mobility and energy band determinations are required to interpret completely the observed effects in most of the compounds studied.

This report documents the work performed and the results obtained during the field demonstration of the Remote Sealing System at the USBM's Jenny Mine near Inez, KY in the Fall of 1978. Although various portions of the Remote Sealing System had been used on a number of prior occasions, the field demonstration at Jenny Mine marked the first use of the complete upgraded system including the use of the inert gas generating system for seal placement and the first application of the new froth foam system. The objective of the field demonstration at Jenny Mine was to demonstrate the complete system by emplacing and evaluating several complete underground seals under conditions representing those of a mine fire situation. Several critical sealing conditions were identified including: ? High entry airflow ? Standing water (1 to 2 ft) in the entry ? Flowing water (150 gal/min) ? Irregular roof ? Sealing a 4-way intersection. Four seals were successfully placed under the conditions mentioned above. The demonstration served to verify proposed techniques to handle these conditions as well as to dispel any doubts about the system's capabilities. As a result of the successful field demonstration, the Remote Sealing Equipment is now under the jurisdiction of MSHA's Mine Emergency Operation ready for a mine fire emergency.

"Energy efficiency in mining and minerals processing forms part of Mintek’s long-term research strategy which includes a specific programme designed at overcoming the challenges faced by the South African pyrometallurgy industry.The electric smelting industry is currently severely constrained by the global economic downturn as well as by the availability and increasing cost of electricity. Efficient utilisation of electricity through energy recovery systems and improved smelting process flowsheets can significantly contribute towards creating sustainable operations.Apart from efficient engineering design and solid process control, smelting of either cold or hot pre-reduced ores has been shown to decrease furnace electricity consumption by more than 40%. Various methods of solid-state reduction tests have been carried out at Mintek in order to select the most appropriate process option in the context of the South African industry. This paper summarises a subset of the results obtained, specifically on pre-reduction tests done on South African chromite and manganese ore pellets.In this set of tests, it was found that the use of an organic binder, together with B2O3 as flux, promotes manganese ore pre-reduction, but retards the pre-reduction of chromite. By pre-reducing the manganese ore feed, significant cost savings can be achieved in subsequent smelting processes and there is potential to minimise manganese losses as a result of fuming, due to possible lower operating temperatures."

THE large pyrites ore-bodies, the underground mining of which is to be described, are situated at Rio Tinto in the Province of Huelva in Southern Spain. The situation of the different ore-bodies with relation to one another is shown in Figure 1. It will be seen on the plan that the strike of the ore-bodies is approximately east and west. The geology of the district has been very fully described by Dr. D. Williams (1), so that for the purposes of this paper it will be sufficient to give briefly the salient features o each of the two larger ore-bodies which are being mined by underground methods at the present time. (a) San Dionisio.-This ore-body is the largest single deposit in Rio Tinto, having on its upper levels a length of 3,500 ft. On the upper levels the average width is approximately 200ft. but in places on the lower levels there is a width of 900ft. of un broken pyrites. Diamond-drill holes, without running out of ore, show the ore-body to persist to a depth of at least 1,600 ft. The ore-body in the upper part lies between slate and porphyry walls, but in depth is enclosed in porphyry walls. (b) South Lode.-Faulting is considered to be responsible for the break in the solid ore between South Lode and San Dionisio. On the upper levels, the South Lode ore-body has an unbroken length of 4,000 ft. The massive pyrites has a maximum width of 300ft. and an average of about 100 ft. Ore has been proved to a depth of 1,000 ft., at which depth the ore-body is much reduced both in length and breadth. This ore-body, to the depth at which it has been proved, lies entirely between slate and porphyry walls. The South Lode and the San Dionisio ore-bodies are mined both by open-cast and by underground methods. There is evidence that these mines have been exploited intermittently during the last 3,000 years; but, as is to be expected, no records are available of the tonnage mined prior to the time of purchase by the present company.

The alkalic igneous province of Montana consists of centers of laccolithic and stock-like intrusive complexes with associated sills, dikes, and breccia pipes (e.g., Judith, Highwood, Little Belt Mts.); isolated plug-like mafic bodies (e.g., Smokey and Eagle Buttes); and clusters of kimberlitic diatremes and ultrabasic dike swarms (Missouri River Breaks). The province extends in a belt throughout central Montana from the North Absaroka Range in the south to the Sweetgrass Hills on the Canadian border. Intrusive activity ranged in age from Late Cretaceous to late Miocene, peaking at about 50 m.y, ago. Diverse types of significant epithermal gold mineralization occur at many of the laccolithic centers. This mineralization took place in large part during the waning stages of, or following, igneous activity. Large remnant travertine blankets in the region attest to comparatively recent hydrothermal activity. The quartz-pyrite-gold mineralization ranges from igneous- hosted stockworks or fracture sets (Zortman-Landusky and Neihart districts) and breccia pipes (North Moccasin Mts.) to replacement zones in flanking and upwarped Madison Group limestone (Gilt Edge and Kendall districts). The latter are mostly localized by intraformational solution breccias in the upper Madison, notably near porphyry contacts. Gold mineralization in the province was accompanied by varying amounts of silver, base metals, sulfosalts, and tellurides, with quartz, fluorite, carbonate, and barite and gangue. Gold occurs as auriferous pyrite, sylvanite, or in native form. Since the 1880's, primary gold production from numerous scattered deposits in the Judith, Moccasin, and Little Rocky Mountains, along with byproduct gold from the Neihart silver district (Little Belt Mountain), has totalled around 2 million oz. The major deposits were in the 1-2 million ton range at an average gold tenor of 0.3-0.6 oz per ton. Most of the ore was mixed oxide or carbonaceous sulfide ore and was treated either by amalgamation or by roasting-cyanidation. Current activity includes heap-leach operations on bulk- tonnage low-grade (approximately 0.03 oz per ton) ores at Zortman-Landusky, and several small-scale, experimental leach or mining operations on carbonaceous replacement ores, as in the Kendall district and Spotted Horse mine. Current exploration efforts for gold are focused not only in the old established districts, but also in and around other alkalic centers, which have been unproductive to date, such as the Crazy Mountains, Sweetgrass Hills, and Bearpaw Mountains. Target concepts in these efforts are porphyry-hosted stockwork or disseminated gold ores and Carlin-type replacement lodes in the flanking Madison or other favorable carbonate units.

AFTER all the chronology that has been given, what is the present status of chromium steels? For the purpose of this discussion the different types of chromium steels can be divided into three classifications-those containing relatively low , percentages of chromium, say 5 per cent or less; the medium-chromium steels containing up to about 18 or 19 per cent chromium; and the steels containing still higher percentages of chromium, and some of the special alloys. Chromium has some unique effects in steel, so it is well to make a few generalizations. The affinity of chromium for carbon is great and the metal is unique in the manger in which it supplements and enhances the effects of carbon. Chromium retards -considerably the thermal transformations on cooling and exerts an opposing influence both on the absorption and precipitation of the carbides in steel. These statements make it easy to understand the fact that chromium .steels are capable of producing a hardened product at a much slower rate of cooling than is, true of plain carbon steel, and that chromium carbide or -the mixed carbides of iron and chromium do not contribute to brittleness to as great a degree as does iron carbide.

It has long been known that closed circuit grinding with a classifier improves grinding efficiency, reduces unit specific power consumption, and reduces over grinding. The classification device removes material from the circuit that has reached the desired size and returns coarse material back to the mill for further grinding. The efficiency of the classifier is an important factor in the overall performance of a grinding circuit. The classifier affects the capacity of the grinding circuit and the metallurgical performance of downstream operations. Safety work in mining at the Andes Copper Mining Company, Potrerillos, Chile, is divided into three parts: (1) accident prevention, (2) fire prevention and protection, and (3) silicosis prevention and control. In the company's operations a steady campaign has been waged to reduce accidents and silicosis, and to prevent fires. In the following pages the safety record for the past twelve years will be examined and the methods explained by which the accident rate was reduced. Table 1 contains yearly data pertaining to the scale of the mining operations and the accident record. Block caving is used for all ore production and the tonnage mined has aver- aged 30,000 short tons per day for the past seven years. Table 2 classifies 44 fatal accidents which have occurred since 1935. The leading causes of accidental death are transportation of ore and use of explosives, followed in order by per- sons falling, falls of ground, and by asphyxiation. This paper reviews key issues related to the placement of dry (soil) covers on extremely weak, compressible fine tailings. The design and construction of soil covers on such tailings often presents a formidable challenge to the geotechnical as well as the environmental engineer due to the low shear strength, poor traffic ability, and high settlement of under consolidated tailings at the time of reclamation. The geotechnical issues to be considered include: (1) consolidation of near-surface tailings to achieve strength gains, improve traffic ability, and allow safe placement of initial cover layer; (2) stability of tailings slopes during dewatering of tailings ponds and/or cover placement; and (3) long-term settlement of tailings and its impact on cover integrity and final surface shaping. The environmental issues to be considered include: (1) management of contaminated (free) pond water; (2) management of contaminated pore water expelled during tailings consolidation; and (3) management of (uncontaminated) surface water on top of the cover. This paper summarizes recent experiences gained in a large uranium tailings reclamation project. It is concluded that a careful consideration of both geotechnical and environmental issues during the planning stages greatly reduces the costs and environmental risks associated with fine tailings reclamation.

This Bureau of Mines report is devoted to descriptions of systems that provide in-mine wired telephone service. Although they may incorporate other features, each system described functions to allow one telephone to selectively access another telephone. Except for the paper on Conventional Telephone Equipment, the equipment described is newly developed and specifically designed to satisfy the requirements of underground mine communications.

Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. Mine planning could as an option, modify the sequence and the extraction could then be remodelled.CITATION:Bennett, A, Arndt, S and Dight, P M, 2014. "Abstract-The 682.8 ± 1.6 Ma Tickle Point Group consists mainly of rhyolite flows and tuffs with- in the Avalon Zone of the Appalachian Orogen in Newfoundland. Stratabound massive sulfide mineralization, consisting of pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena, occurs at the Winter Hill prospect, where a lower pyritic, Cu-rich zone and an upper Zn-Pb-rich zone are hosted by a carbonate-calc-silicate lens. At the Frenchman Head prospect, stringers of pyrite, minor sphalerite, chalcopyrite and rare galena are hosted by felsic volcanic rocks of the Tickle Point Group .Base metal ratios, metal zonations and the overall stratigraphic framework suggest that these sulfide occurrences represent volcanogenic massive to semi-massive sulfide mineralization (stringer type at Frenchman Head). As such these prospects represent the only known VMS occurrences within the Avalon Zone of Newfoundland. Pb isotope data indicate that galena from the Winter Hill prospect is less radiogenic and older than galena from Dunnage Zone occurrences, and suggest that the Winter Hill mineralization formed in an environment tectonically distinct (exotic) from the Dunnage Zone."

In response to the Natural Resources Canada “Crush It Challenge,” Corem partnered with the University of British Columbia and led a project to develop and demonstrate the use of high-pressure grinding to replace the workhorse of the industry, wet ball milling. Two plant case studies, a small tonnage gold recovery operation and a large tonnage copper recovery operation, were carried out. Plant circuit performances were compared to pilot plants operated on the same circuit feed setup to represent the novel equipment and flowsheet that was developed to produce separation circuit feed. Numerous obstacles to industrial implementation of high-pressure grinding in this role which were recognized at the outset of the work were successfully addressed. In both cases, comminution equipment energy savings alone and final stage total circuit energy savings exceeded 60% and 50%, respectively. Downstream mineral separation performance was the same or better.
